Opis:
Experimental corpus of the Lithuanian local dialect of Puńsk in Poland (a tool for the study on the Polish and Lithuanian local dialects in the Suwałki Region)The linguistic resources included in EkorpGP present a great cognitive value for Polish and Lithuanian dialectologists. Particularly valuable for researchers of the Lithuanian local dialects, including the local dialect of Puńsk, is subcorpus A. The material included in EKorpGP confirms that the local dialect is incessantly evolving. The typical dialectal features vanish for the sake of the standardized Lithuanian language.Whereas, subcorpora B and C are a good base for studies on the processes of the language interference in the speech of the bilingual Lithuanians of Puńsk. Amongst the potential recipients of these subcorpora it is possible also to find dialectologists dealing with the local dialects of the Suwałki Region, as well as researchers of the Polish language spoken to the east of the Polish border. The polonization suggested in EKorpGP (with reference to subcorpus A) along with subcorpora B and C will ensure a credible source of information for a wide circle of researchers of the phenomena of sociological, ethnological, cultural and historical nature. It should also be taken into account that the issues raised in the utterances given by the Lithuanians of Puńsk will capture the interest of politicians dealing with the national minorities in Poland. The extraordinary value of the materials collected in EKorpGP results from the fact that they reflect the economic, political and civilization transformations of the turbulent period of 1986–2012 in Poland, Lithuania and Europe.

Applications of the experimental Polish-Lithuanian corpus /EkorpPL-LT/ in research on the contemporary Polish language and in theoretical Polish-Lithuanian contrastive studiesThe experimental Polish-Lithuanian corpus is an extended tool put into effect at the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences, first of all with a view to contrastive studies and the structure of the planned Polish-Lithuanian electronic dictionary. The potential recipients of EKorpPL-LT (obviously apart from linguists) can comprise computer specialists (dealing with computer processing of a language), literary scholars, library science specialists, pedagogues, educationalists, teachers, translators, students. Bi- and multilingual corpora are irreplaceable and indispensable in the process of studying a foreign language. In the article, basing on the examples of several problems, possible ways to apply EKorpPL-LT have been presented. During the experiments carried out it turned out that the parallel corpus is not only an excellent tool for comparison and contrast, but also an instrument allowing to look at every language from a different perspective. Without the perspective it would not be possible to say much about Polish and Lithuanian indicative pronouns, indefinite determiners, dual forms or the vocative case. If it were not for the information based on corpora resources, nobody would be aware that the language of Polish instructions of convenience appliances is not only a commercial effect, but above all an element of the state’s concern for the Polish language.

Opis:
In the 2016 Lithuanian parliamentary election the established political parties suffered an unexpected and crippling defeat at the hand of the Lithuanian Peasant and Green Union (Lietuvos valstiečių ir žaliųjų sąjunga, LVŽS), a populist one-size-fits-all formation. The aim of this article is to identify and analyze major reasons of the populist victory in Lithuania in the context of global trend of trumpisation of politics. The traditional message of the establishment parties to take care of the economy, to advance foreign investment and improve business climate did not appeal to voters, while the LVŽS made a point of talking about issues people wanted to hear: the need to tackle social exclusion and poverty; to address the privileged position of big business; to fight endemic corruption; to deal with the underfunding of education and culture. The electoral message of the winner combines the hard left promise of radical change on socioeconomic issues and the far right conservative approach to identity politics, human rights, minority rights, gender equality, and refugees. The LVŽS did its best to look as an anti-establishment, anti-party politics force, a loose and wide amalgam of contrasting personalities and contradicting messages. At the same time, the major factor behind the ‘revolutionary’ victory for radical change seems to be the inability of the mainstream parties to sense the change of sentiment of the electorate and to address the growing grievances of the public. The Lithuanian anti-establishment revolt is being compared with Donald Trump’s victory in the US, Brexit in the UK, Poland after the last election in 2015, and Hungary under Victor Orban.

Opis:
In December 1927, at the Polish-Lithuanian meeting in Geneva the state of war between the two countries was lifted. As a consequence of this meeting, both sides decided to take the necessary measures to establish bilateral relations in the future. The Polish government counted on constructive dialogue, which allowed to sign the agreement on launching the railway transport, postal and telegraph service, transit and local border traffic. The Lithuanian side did not recognize the need to establish the direct relations, and the note of losing Vilnius by Lithuania in 1920 was heard in the comments of Lithuanian diplomats. The Polish-Lithuanian negotiations started on 30 March 1928 in Konigsberg. Their pace aroused keen interest among the diplomatic missions and was extensively commented in the Polish and Lithuanian press. The Polish side greeted the beginning of the negotiations with great hope, counting on normalizing the mutual relations. However, with time it became obvious for the Polish delegation that reaching the agreement suggested by Poland would be impossible because of the unrelenting stance of Lithuanians. Signing an agreement on the local border traffic was the only result of the negotiations.

Opis:
This article analyses the furniture created in Lithuania during the interwar period. Today, from a time perspective, we can shed light on the development of furniture making, with the aim to reveal the furniture designers and the particular interiors where this kind of furniture became popular, as well as the styles that influenced them. In this paper, the author mostly describes artistic designs for secular interiors. The selection was based on the fact that this furniture best reflects the prevailing tendencies when it comes to design during a particular period. After independence was restored to Lithuania, the design of produced furniture became more modern and similar to that of Western Europe. This was caused by the educative propaganda in the media and the new generation of architects and artists who had graduated from universities in western countries. The new, rational construction of houses where all the free rooms were usually rented during the crisis caused demand of space-saving furniture. The architects usually designed both buildings and the built-in furniture with that concept in mind. Architects attempted to tailor built-in furniture to the user’s needs and financial capabilities in the most optimal way. Built-in modular storage systems, kitchen cupboards, and bookshelves were conceived as architectural components. They were used to divide and to model the space. The small living space required the number of furniture pieces to be reduced. That is why unit furniture became the second-most trending innovation during the interwar period. The combination of wardrobes, bookcases, and sideboards into one piece was the most popular modular unit furniture. Tables with shelves and couches with consoles were also popular examples of space-saving furniture. These modern innovations of furniture were made in art déco style since the late 1920s. The search for Lithuanian national style was particularly relevant in the interwar period and design was used as an instrument for political purpose. This is obviously prevalent in the furniture of representation interiors. Leading architects like Vytautas Landsbergis-Zemkalnis, Bronius Elsbergas, and Arnas Funkas, and also some popular artists such as Jonas Prapuolenis, Antanas Gudaitis, and Gerardas Bagdonavicius, designed not only furniture innovations but also furniture in the Lithuanian national style as part of their representative-interior projects. Country-wide Lithuanian exhibitions and presentations abroad were also dominated by the Lithuanian national style, propagated by the authorities. Interpretations of ethnic furniture decor and forms, as well as national symbols became dominant in all Lithuanian-national-style furniture.

It identifies the reasons due to which passenger transportation has become increasingly loss-making. Also, factors that may encourage a greater number of people to travel by train are disclosed. The development of this sector up to 2030 is reviewed, i.e. a forecast for increasing the number of passengers, a perspective for the development of electric, diesel trains, passenger wagon fleet, and the levels of estimated investments are provided. It was established that after implementation of the measures envisaged, losses in the passenger transportation field could be cut by 2–3 times.

The question of gentry and the Lithuanian national project: the example of the newspaper Litwa (1908–1914)At the end of the 19th and beginning of 20th centuries some national movements in the Eastern and Central Europe actualized the question of how to include the gentry into the process of the formation of modern nations. Similar initiatives were taken in Lithuania. During 1908–1914 in Vilnius, a highborn poet and publicist Mečislovas Davainis‑Silvestraitis (Mieczysław Dowojna-Sylwestrowicz, 1849–1919) also edited a periodical Litwa in Polish, which was aimed to welcome gentry into the Lithuanian national movement.Lithuanian and Polish historians who studied the relations between Lithuanian national movement and gentry, in general dealt with two questions, namely: how Polonization of the gentry evolved the issue and why major part of the gentry did not participate in the Lithuanian national movement. Otherwise, the question was the attitude of the ideologists of Lithuanian national movement had towards the gentry at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century in academic works. In this article, after using for research the ideological basement of Litwa that is to welcome gentry to Lithuanian national movement, three questions are studied: the attitude to that question of different Lithuanian parties and political groups during this period, circumstances that caused changes of these attitudes and the role in this process of returning gentry to Lithuanian nation played by the periodical Litwa. W latach 1908–1914 szlachetnie urodzony poeta i publicysta Mieczysław Dowojno-Sylwestrowicz (Mečislovas Davainis- Silvestraitis, 1849–1919) wydawał w języku polskim w Wilnie czasopismo „Litwa”, które dążyło do włączenia szlachty do litewskiego ruchu odrodzenia narodowego.

The authors in their work analyse the emergence, evolution and implementation of the idea of Vilnius as the capital of modern Lithuanian state at the turn of the 20th century until 1940. The monograph is based on valuable material from the archives, bibliographic sources and interesting iconography. With particular regard to the Lithuanian national project, describing and explaining the strategies of the symbolic appropriation of Vilnius and the question of Vilnius’ Lithuanisation, Mačiulis and Staliūnas first of all focus on the Lithuanian case in as much detail as possible. Here in the reviewed work we do not find such detailed analysis of Polish, Jewish, Belarusian or Russian attitudes towards the Vilnius question. Of course this does not detract from the importance of this inspiring book which is as a valuable academic publication and useful source for further research. Mačiulis, D., & Staliūnas, D., Vilnius – Lietuvos sostinė: problema tautinės valstybės projekte (XIX a. pabaiga – 1940 m.), Vilnius: Lietuvos istorijos instituto leidykla, 2015. Opis:
The meaning of bilingual corpora in the Polish-Lithuanian comparative studiesIn his article, the author compares and contrasts the results of his own research on the hypothetical modality in Polish and Lithuanian: a) carried out together with Danuta Roszko, using the traditional method (without use of bilingual corpora in the 90s); b) with use of parallel Polish-Lithuanian corpora resources. As for the contrast of the two methods, special attention has been drawn to the lexical exponents singled out. The use of the corpora resources resulted in the fact that the number of exponents of hipothetical modality singled out in the two languages has slightly risen. Moreover, the borders between the corresponding groups of exponents have become more distinct and obvious. There has been confirmed a possibility of using the corresponding groups of exponents to express the meanings of the adjacent groups. The conclusion has been drawn that this phenomenon is as obvious now as it was earlier expected (in studies without use of bilingual corpora). The separate analysis of corpora resources with the division into the material being a) mutual Polish-Lithuanian translations (i.e. from Polish into Lithuanian and vice versa) and b) translations into Polish and Lithuanian from third languages (here: from German, English or Russian) does not significantly influence the number and diversity of the lexical exponents applied in the two languages. This fact proves a high competence of the translators. The formal resemblance of some of the Polish and Lithuanian exponents does not have a significant influence on which form to choose in the target language. In the translations from Polish into Lithuanian, part of the lexical exponents are conveyed with morphological exponents (lack of such in Polish). The hypothetical modality understated in Polish is sometimes clarified in translations into Lithuanian with the help of morphological forms. In some translations from Lithuanian into Polish the total omission of meanings (also the hypothetical) can be noticed, which results from applying the Lithuanian modus relativus forms. In several cases where some Lithuanian-Polish divergences in translations from Lithuanian into Polish have been noticed, a preliminary comparison of a Lithuanian original material and its translation into Russian can suggest that despite the confirmed direction of translation (from Lithuanian into Polish), it can indeed be a translation from Russian into Polish. However, proving this hypothesis requires the establishing of a trilingual Polish-Lithuanian-Russian corpora for the selected material to allow systematic and consistent studies in this direction. The author gives statistical data for the Polish-Lithuanian lexical exponents of hypothetical modality to distinguish between the mutual translations (Polish-Lithuanian) and those of third languages.

Opis:
From 1826 to 1903, about 80% of the students of Seinai Theological Seminary were ethnic Lithuanians, and Lithuanian was their or their parents’ native language. The question about Lithuanian activities of the Lithuanian students at the seminary is therefore well founded. During first decades of its existence, national consciousness of the Lithuanians was not relevant. For performing pastoral work in Lithuanian parishes, the Lithuanian brought from parental home was sufficient. Using the Lithuanian language at Seinai Theological Seminary was stimulated by the reforms of Bishop K. I. Łubieński and encouragement of Professor Stanisław Jamiołkowski. First of all, the use of Lithuanian manifested itself through the singing of Lithuanian folk songs. Singing Lithuanian songs stressed the ethnic difference between the Lithuanian and Polish students of the seminary. Officially, the Lithuanian language was not taught at the seminary until 1904. For this reason, Lithuanian students started learning Lithuanian secretly: they realised they would need it in their pastoral work. Seminary students spoke Lithuanian among themselves, thus demonstrating their national awareness, but they also learned Polish at the seminary. The students’ Lithuanian activities should be viewed in the context of Lithuanian nationalism. National revival was raising specific requirements to the Church and it was important that the seminary trained future clergymen to meet the demands of the public. The students engaged in Lithuanian activities through participation in a secret association of future Lithuanian priests. One of the forms of its activities was distribution of the banned Lithuanian press. The students not only distributed banned literature but also contributed to its printing and publishing: they produced hand-written newspapers in the seminary and wrote articles, first for illegal publications and later, after the ban on the Lithuanian press was lifted, for legally published periodicals.

Lexical indicators of the hypothetical modality in Polish and LithuanianThe dissertation discusses the problem of lexical indicators of the hypothetical modality to be observed in Polish and Lithuanian. To begin with, the definition of the hypothetical modality along with its paraphrase has been formed. Furthermore, the gradational character of the category has been analyzed. There have been distinguished six groups of lexemes, which express particular degrees of the hypothetical modality – ranging from that expressing the trace of uncertainty (minimal degree of probability) to that expressing almost complete certainty (maximum degree of probability). The resemblances and differences between the languages have been noticed. In the research area, the method of contemporary contrastive studies utilizing the interlanguage and the experimental Polish-Lithuanian corpus have been applied.

Opis:
The article is an attempt to answer the question about the factors which contributed to the fact that at the end of 19th and the beginning of 20th centuries part of youth of noble descent raised in Polish-speaking families deliberately chose the Lithuanian identity and became involved in the Lithuanian national movement. The author discusses the basic stimuli that had an impact on favouring the Lithuanian identity by the representatives of nobility. The author seeks to answer these questions by making a comparative analysis of the biographies of Vladas Putvinskis (1873-1929), Mykolas Birzˇisˇka (1882-1962) and Tadas Ivanauskas (1882-1970).
