Opis:
The purpose of the research is to identify a range of possible ways of explication in the translation of a literary text, their study and systematization taking into account the general strategy of the translator. The task of the research is to consider and analyze the application of explication in Ukrainian translations of G Wells’s novel “The Invisible Man” performed by M. Ivanov and O. Didyk using the method of contextual, comparative and, in some cases, component analysis. The undertaken analysis of scientific theories testifies that the reasons that prompt the translator to apply explication can be external and internal. One of the factors at the junction of internal and external causes is the role of the translator as a mediator in the process of interlingual communication. Based on comparative analysis, we concluded that M. Ivanov’s translation decisions quite specifically and adequately reflect the versatility and complex intertwining that are characteristic of G. Wells’ reproduction of the picture of what is happening. However, it is not always possible to prioritize the decision of M. Ivanov, as very often the translator deviates from the original and applies a paraphrase. O. Didyk’s translation is dominated by a position with a focus on the recipient culture. The practical significance of the study is in the possibility of using the conclusions and recommendations in the practice of literary translation and editing of translated texts, as well as in assessing the quality of translation.

In order to be a part of an explanatory theory of translation, translation competence should be taken as the specific competence a translator needs beyond general types of competence, such as the knowledge of the source language and the target language. In literary translation, the translator is an expert reader of the source text, whereas in scientific translation it is unrealistic and not necessary to expect this. This imposes different requirements on translation competence.

The present paper examines the transfer of nomino-adjectival collocations based on the word ‘femme’ (‘woman’) in the literary translation from French into Italian and Polish. The lexical connection analysed in the article can be defined as the habitual juxtaposition of a word with another word (or words) that has a significant frequency in a given language. The research corpus comprises seven Michel Houellebecq’s novels written originally in French and their Italian and Polish versions. The theoretical part of the paper aims to present phraseotranslation and phraseotraductology, which are the new subbranches in phraseology. Then, the empirical part proposes the analysis of techniques used in transferring collocations.

The study was devoted to adjustments (pertaining e.g. to conjunctions and ellipsis) introduced by Maryla Laurent to her French translation of the novel Wszystkie języki świata [All languages of the world] by Zbigniew Mentzel. Conducted analyses have shown that additions and modifications of cohesive conjunctions are not determined by linguistic asymmetry of the target language, but they comply with the strategy of adapting the translation to meet expectations of the French audience regarding discourse and style.

The fantastical and devilish qualities of The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov created a need for the adequate means of expression. Therefore, the phraseological units are the most representative group, as they belong to the more colloquial part of language, and have a more familiar stylistic tone. The units with the words “chort” or “devil” are the most significant, therefore they were analysed in depth from the point of view of the translation theory. To exemplify the aforementioned phenomenon, the author refers to two sources: the canonical translation of The Master and Margarita by Irena Lewandowska and Witold Dąbrowski, which is still present in the consciousness of the Polish reader, and the newer version authored by Andrzej Drawicz. The comparative analysis of the selected material indicates that the authors of both translations preferred to use the phraseological units which differed in structure or the lexical composition from their Russian counterparts. However, the juxtaposed “translation equivalents” indicate the similarities in which Polish and Russian language capture our reality.

The aim of this article is to investigate the usefulness and applicability of CAT (Computer-Aided Translation) programmes in relation to the qualities (e.g. standardisation, predictability, terminology) of the translated text. In the study both scientific articles and translator’s forums are taken into account in order to establish advantages and limitations of commercial CATs. It appears that CAT programmes influence cognitively the translator’s work and even though they are supposed to facilitate his or her work, they may hinder or slow down the process of translation. These programmes are also applicable only in the case of certain types of texts, namely those which are standard and predictable and they fail in the case of texts which are linguistically or culturally-coloured. Furthermore, translators express numerous practical concerns regarding CATs (e.g. their price, instability). However, their use has become a very basic translation skill and it is no longer an advantage but an absolute necessity for anyone wishing to work as a translator.

The analysis encompasses intertextual elements from various culture texts, e.g. poems, legends, folk songs, which are explicitly given in poems. The strategies adopted in all versions are compared and evaluated with a view to determining similarities and differences as well as the factors which conditioned the choice of the strategy. Special attention is paid to lacunary connotations evoked by the references at issue.

Nowadays self-translation remains a frequent practice in the literary field in Canada. A close reading of the self-translations done by Canadian writers such as Nancy Houston, Marco Micone or Patrice Desbiens allows to discover each author’s own vision of self-translation as a creative process. The aim of the paper is to determine, through a comparative analysis of excerpts from the two language versions of the play La Maculée/sTain (2012) and the latest bilingual novel La voix de mon père / My Father’s Voice (2015) by Fransaskois playwright Madeleine Blais-Dahlem, to what extent her self-translating practice guides the reading of the text. Examiningthe back and forth between the two versions of the same work will allow to delve deeper into the subject of the identity and privileged status of the translator (Tanqueiro 2009: 109, Saint 2018: 120), but also into the role and skills of the receiver of Madeleine Blais-Dahlem’s bilingual writings.

One of the most frequent problems in translation is the question of translation of hypocorisms: inasmuch as Polish is rich in diminutives, English practically does not have them. Diminutive and affectionate forms in a very limited range of contexts, and descriptive (analytical) diminutives are of little stylistic interest. The article discusses examples of coping with this problem in translations both from Polish into English, and from English into Polish. The authors tries to answer the question if it is possible to retain the emotionality expressed in diminutives of a translated text. Two texts were selected for the analysis: Jan Kochanowski’s Laments in Stanisław Barańczak and Seamus Heaney’s translation, and Ronal Fairbank’s The Flower Beneath the Foot, translated by Andrzej Sosnowski. Laments, addressed to a dead child, are of particular interest for the analysis, because diminutives and terms of endearment are frequently used and perform a peculiar function of creation of meaning. Discussing this translation, the author of the article tries to demonstrate that the emotionality expressed by Kochanowski through hypocorisms has been expressed by other means in the English translation: the right choice of epithets, and orchestration of the verse. In the Polish translation of Firbank’s novel, the hypocorisms introduced by the translator are read not as an arbitrary addition, but as elements that contribute to the camp climate of the novel, and reflect the irony, artificiality, and theatricality of the work, by means that are accessible in Polish language.

As it is one of the most prestigious awards in Canada, it undoubtedly conditions the reception of a literary work, being a symbol of prestige. The choice of the jury can sometimes seem surprising or even confusing, as it was the case of Nancy Huston or Jacques Brault who won the prize in the category of translation. Without a doubt, the specificity of the translation à la canadienne goes beyond any distinctions and descriptions and – being also a political issue – revolts against all control and all interference.

Joseph Conrad’s language has been subject to various analyses regarding its uniqueness stemming from the writer’s trilingualism. Scholars have traced diverse influences from the French and Polish languages in this writer’s artistic output. Nevertheless, the effects of such influences are not thoroughly discussed. This article attempts to take a critical look at the outcomes deriving from the appearance of phrases which may be classified as Polonisms or pseudo-Polonisms in two short stories Amy Foster and Prince Roman and their translations into Polish. In the former story, untypical phrasings which may have been calqued from Polish serve to emphasise the alienation of the character of Yanko, in the latter, expressions which are generally common for both English and Polish highlight both the distinctiveness of Polish culture and its affinity with the European cultural setting. Unfortunately, in the translations into the language from which such linguistic or cultural concepts originated, such effects are much less distinctive.

The present article deals with the indirect translation, which is conceived by many translation theoreticians as an inadvisable practice. The aim of the paper is to prove that the Polish rendering of the novel “Koelie” by the Dutch writer Madelon Székely-Lulofs is in fact an indirect translation. The case study draws on a triangulation method consisting of peritextual, epitextual and comparative analysis. The epitextual analysis enabled to advance a hypothesis, that the translator of the novel into Polish – Herminia Bukowska – might have rendered indirect either via the German or English version. On the basis of the comparative analysis of the source text with its renderings into German, English and Polish carried out with regard to the so-called third culture elements, was it possible to verify this hypothesis. The comparison revealed quite a few unambiguous similarities between the Polish and German rendering in the translators’ approach in relation to the mentioned translation units, which in turn differ from the source text.

The aim of this article is to present a part of the research results regarding the functioning of phraseological units (i.e. their canonical and innovative forms) in the Polish texts of contemporary prose translated from French. Consequently, there has been created a classification covering various types of relations occurring in given contexts between Polish phraseological units used by translators and the source texts. The practice shows that a translator decides from time to time to interpose a phraseological unit in a given context of the final text, even if there is no any kind of fixed expression in the original. Therefore, it is worth trying to find an answer to a question about translation decisions in this matter.

First, the concept of translator studies – one of the most recent subfields of translation studies – is briefly presented together with its major assumptions. Then, the traditional sender-transmitter-receiver translation scheme is developed to include more agents. The resulting list is to give a brief overview of how complex the situation of literary translator is, whose responsibility for the shape of a literary product requires dealing with several counteracting objectives.

The oral character inherent to a theatre and the hybrid or multilingual character of modern French Canadian literature invests it with functions that pertain strictly to the spoken word and that translator must take into account. This paper examines translation strategies proposed and applied in English and Standard-French translations of the play "Le Chien", written by Franco-Ontarian playwright Jean-Marc Dalpé. In the play "Le Chien" the hybrid character of language and abundance of swearwords constitutes a symptom of inability to communicate of protagonists and animality of their discourse. This specificity, crucial in terms of interpretation of the play, is the major obstacle in translator’s work because he needs to target the specific, English and French-speaking audience which is unilingual and doesn’t have the same cultural experience.

Opis:
Over the nearly two centuries that Hamlet has been a fixture of the Slovene cultural firmament, the complete text has been translated five times, mostly by highly esteemed figures of Slovene literature and literary translation. This article focuses on the most recent translation, which was done by the prominent Slovene drama translator Srečko Fišer for a performance at the National Theatre in Ljubljana in 2013. It examines the new translation’s relations to its source text as well as to the previous translations. After the late twentieth century, when Hamlet was regarded as a text to be challenged, this new translation indicates the return to the tradition of reverence both for the source text and its author, and for the older translations. This is demonstrated on all levels, from the choice of source text edition, which seems to bear more similarities with the older translations than with the most recent predecessors, to the style, which echoes the solutions used by the earlier translators. Fišer continues the Slovenian tradition to a far greater extent than the two translators twenty years ago, by using the same strategies as the early translators, not fixing what was not broken, and only adding his own interpretation to the existing ones, instead of challenging or ignoring them. At the same time, however, traces of subversion of the source text can be detected, not in the form of rebellion, but rather as a mild disregard. This latest translation is the first one to frequently reshuffle the text. It is also the first to subordinate meaning to style. This all indicates that despite the apparent return to tradition, the source text is no longer treated with the reverence of the past.

The article takes up the problem of linguistic representations of cultural otherness in Swedish literature featuring immigrant and/or class-stratified environments. The language, both of the protagonists as well as the narration, is a literary construct exposing only those linguistic elements (mainly lexical ones) which are relevant for achieving a pragmatic purpose – the effect of otherness. The article presents a stylistic analysis of the means of expression employed together with translators' strategies aimed at achieving a functional equivalence.

The very text is directly related to the text entitled “On the Process of Translation of a Literary Text. A Case Study of “Edzio” by Bruno Schulz (an overview of an exercise)” published a year ago (see Chruszczewski 2019). “The vast majority of texts regarding a number of issues connected with the notion of translation describe the translated text as a product – that is another text rendered into another culture, not even mentioning another language. The idea of this exercise was based upon an attempt of having a look at how exactly the process of translation of a literary text would proceed. This short presentation is just a small fragment of a much larger work devoted to the process of translation” (Chruszczewski 2019: 57–58). It is a presentation of a translation exercise undertaken by ten students coming from two different seminar groups. Each of the students have translated from Polish into English a text of a comparable length. All the students are bilingual, and fluent in English. None of them is a native speaker of English. After the translation exercise was completed the texts were assembled and integrated into a coherent literary narration in the target language. All students were asked to try to write down their impressions while they were translating the text, including what was the rationale behind their decisions. As one can notice, it was relatively easy for the students to provide interesting translations, but the majority of them found it exceptionally difficult to describe their choices as translators. The above can be a hint for future theorists of translation studies to start large scale interdisciplinary projects based on the interesting fact that translation processes (in plural!) can work differently within the minds of translators even if they are almost at the same age and they come from quite similar cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

Clarification is one of the textual phenomena enumerated by Antoine Berman as deforming tendencies in translation. It is best observable when the target text turns what was ambiguous in the original into more specific. This need to clarify the original often stems from systemic differences between languages. However, on numerous occasions the movement from the original ‘indefinite’ into the definite in the translation results from a subjective decision taken by the translator, who in fact has proper linguistic means at his disposal to retain the original level of indeterminacy. In the case of a literary work such a tendency may influence all its levels, especially the interpretative possibilities, as seen in two Polish translations of E.A. Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher, by Bolesław Leśmian and Stanisław Wyrzykowski. By discussing descriptions of the fictional space and the references to the Usher siblings, this article indicates to what extent clarifying lexical choices impact on the atmosphere of the work, consistency of the fictional world, suspense and the stance of the narrator.

One of the markers of Bruno Schulz’s style is the simile. It plays two roles in the poetic prose of the author: on the one hand, it confronts two phenomena in a concise and conventional manner; on the other, it compares, quite unexpectedly, two events, living creatures or objects, which seem to have nothing in common. In this article I analyze excerpts of three Spanish translations in order to identify techniques used to render this trope, to verify the consequences of the omission of the linking words, and to investigate whether Spanish readers will be able to recreate the same or a similar image to the one evoked in the original.

For obvious reasons, literary translation is only marginally present in the general teaching of translation at university level. The interest of both teachers and students naturally focuses on texts of everyday use. However, the specific nature of poetic works, first of all their multidimensionality, makes them an excellent material to sensitise the future translator to diverse linguistic, intertextual and culture-related phenomena which, in a less pronounced form, also occur in non-literary texts. Thus, this article is intended as a plea for the inclusion of poetry in translation teaching.

The author of the article aims to analyse problems of grammatical gender translation which stem from the differences between the Polish and Spanish grammar systems, and how the gender specific elements in the Polish text were rendered in the target language, especially in the fragments in which Spanish did not have the grammatical gender equivalent and the translator had to compensate for it in a different fragment.

The paper discusses the issue of cultural memory in a translation of literary text. Based on material of Miljenko Jergović’s story Gurbet and its Polish translation, the article shows how elements of source cultural memory present in the original text are being “lost” when translated to other language and culture. The term of “losing memory” is used figuratively to present the consequences of a translator’s (conscious and/or unconscious) decisions on which specific features of source culture are to be preserved (foreignization) or not (domestication) in the target text. These decisions influence the image of source culture that the reader of the translation can “produce” in the wake of reading. For instance, Polish translation of the story “Gurbet” only partly preserves the memory of Christian-Islamic and Slavic-Ottoman intercultural (or even transcultural) coexistence in the region of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is one of the main topics and motifs of Miljenko Jergović’s works. As a result, Polish reader cannot produce the same image of the source culture as the reader of the original.

After a period of reading Miłosz in terms of ethical and political categories, Chinese reviews and literary texts in the 2010s and 2020s increasingly refer to Miłosz as philosophical and metaphysical poet. This article analyses Miłosz’s reception in China, paying attention to the historical, cultural, and linguistic factors that shaped the assimilation of his work and the values he brought to Chinese poetry.

From the point of view of linguistics, literary studies, and translation studies, the poem is demonstrative of the variety of forms of negation and their semantic functions used in Szymborska’s entire oeuvre. The translators use numerous and various forms of formal and semantic negation as well, but they lack the central pragmatic negation. Szymborska doubts whether ‘our’ world is the best of possible worlds: since there is only one course of events, ‘the paradise of probability’ is ‘artificial’; the world is a burial ground of possibilities that did not come true.

The book is part of the series Historia Kontaktów Literackich między Chinami a Zagranicą (The History of China’s Foreign Literary Contacts) which aims to become a comprehensive description of China’s cultural exchange with other countries. Volume 17 is devoted to China’s relationships with Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Estonia, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia and Slovenia. In this group, Poland occupies one of the central positions due to, among other, a high interest in Polish history among Chinese intellectual elite of the early twentieth century and among the reformers of Chinese literature in that period. The article discusses the sources of the popularity of Polish themes in the formative period of modern Chinese literature and the reception of Polish literature in China today. It also attempts to familiarise the readers with the themes studied by the researchers, the goals they set for themselves and the methods they used to achieve them, and presents the benefits of publishing the book in Polish.

When translating a literary text from a more or less remote past, a translator has to resort to some kind of imitation of the past text features, which is traditionally called archaization or temporal stylization. The fundamentals of temporal stylization were outlined in A. Fedorov’s works and later developed by a number of scholars, yet the research into archaization as a translation strategy has started only recently. The article looks into the functions of temporal stylization, such as transferring the reader into a distant epoch; increasing the effect of the fictional play; rendering the cultural dynamics through the text, reflecting the text’s various generic qualities, including the archaic ones. The illustrative examples come from the author’s own translation work: 19th century Romantic prose (T. Hoffman, L. Tieck), Austrian folk tales, private correspondence (W.A. Mozart’s letters), suggesting that the repertoire of the expressive means to render the historic colouring was found out through precedents. The author lays out her ideas about the possibility of self-evaluation in translation and puts forward the hypothesis that the type of temporal stylization depends on the type of the text. Temporal archaization is understood as a complex of typological text features and conventions, style registers and variations of the language norm. The research opens up a field for developing micro and macro strategies for literary translation.

The article presents the figure of Karl Dedecius (1921–2016) by exploring his activity as a translator and ambassador of Polish – but also Russian – literature and culture in German-speaking countries (mainly Germany). Having spent his youth in pre-war multicultural Łódź and – after the outbreak of WW II – having been a prisoner of war in Soviet camps, in December 1949 Dedecius moved to the GDR, from where he fled three years later with his family to West Germany. For 25 years he had divided – his life between literary translation, notably poetry, work as an insurance agent and family matters, and after retiring he managed to set up the Deutsches Polen-Institut, a non-governmental institution devoted to the popularisation of Polish literature in Germany, which he led in the years 1980–1998. As one of his close collaborators states, Dedecius’s editorial legacy comprises about 200 books which he either translated, wrote or edited, with poetry translations and literary essays being the core of his literary activity. He rendered some 3,000 poems of roughly 300 Polish poets into German and composed ca. 10 books that present and analyse – chiefly the 20th-century – Polish literature; some of them also contain essays on translation, fragments of which are cited and commented in the present article. Another important source and basis of considerations is Dedecius’s autobiography Ein Europäer aus Lodz [A European from Łódź], which explains the background of the author’s life at its different stages.

The focus of this study is the lexical-semantic dynamics in Romanian biblical versions. We have selected a number of ten texts that are representative for a comparative analysis of the “Parable of the Prodigal Son,” from Gospel according to Luke, chapter 15, verses 11–32: Coresi’s Tetraevangelion (Coresi 1561), The New Testament from Bălgrad (NT 1648), The Bible from Bucharest (Bible 1688), The Vulgata from Blaj (Bible 1760), The Bible from Blaj (Bible 1795), The Șaguna Bible (Bible 1858), The Synodical Bible (Bible 1914), The Cornilescu Bible (Bible 1921), The Radu-Galaction Bible (Bible 1938), The Anania Bible (Bible 2001). We shall only discuss the lexical-semantic dynamics from a diachronic perspective, observing that the church language (the biblical language, in this case) is characterized mainly by simplicity, accessibility and conservatism, and this is why the dynamics of the vocabulary does not know the amplitude that is common to other fields. We note the presence of lexical coincidences in successive versions of the Bible: a word that has not been replaced at all, resisting during several centuries. The stability of a word is usually proof of its framing within the basic vocabulary of the language and an index concerning the genealogy of texts. The lexical substitutions from the biblical versions have different explanations: (i) the use of different sources (especially, the Slavonic, Greek or Latin sources); (ii) the passage from the principle of literal rendering to the literary translation; (iii) language variation (diachronic, stylistic and dialectal variation).

Opis:
The vast majority of texts regarding a number of issues connected with the notion of translation describe the translated text as a product – that is as another text rendered into another culture, not even mentioning another language. The idea of this exercise was based upon an attempt of having a look at how exactly the process of translation of a literary text would proceed. All the participants of the exercise wished to see if it would be at all possible to work upon one and the same text, and continue working on it at certain randomly selected points. This short paper is just a small fragment of a much larger work devoted to the process of translation. It is a presentation of a translation exercise undertaken by seven students. Each of the six students have translated two pages, the seventh student was supposed to assemble and unify the translated texts, integrating them into a coherent narration in the target language. All students were asked to try to write down their impressions while they were working on the text, including what was the rationale behind their decisions. As it appears it was not very difficult for the students to come up with quite interesting translations, but it was much more harder for them to describe their choices as translators. As one can notice, the exercise went very well, the students entertained themselves, and at the same time perhaps they also understood a little better that the translation processes worked differently within their minds, even though after all they were working on the text of the same short literary work by Bruno Schultz.

Tłumaczenie literackie jako narzędzie dydaktyczne w nauczaniu języków obcych? Studium przypadku: Przed sklepem jubilera Karola Wojtyły w tłumaczeniu L2 W ostatnich latach dokonano ponownej oceny roli tłumaczenia w nauczaniu języków obcych (Cook; Laviosa; Carreres, « Translation »). W 2001 r.

In recent years there has been a reassessment of the role of translation and translations in foreign language teaching and education (Cook; Laviosa; Carreres, « Translation »). In 2001 the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) recognized translation and interpretation as a language activity which is called mediation. Literary translation is being proposed as a mediation activity intended to develop the (written) mediation competence of foreign language learners. This article reports on the results of a case study in which we examine to what extend the L2 translation of drama indeed does enhance mediation skills of language learners. In this case study, we decided to investigate the extent to which Dutch language learners apply mediation strategies when translating an excerpt from Przed sklepem jubilera (The Jeweler’s Shop) (written by Karol Wojtyła) in Dutch (L2), and the extent to which their strategies differ from those we found in the (official) Dutch translation of the play.

Artykuł porusza problem tłumaczenia antroponimów sztucznych na przykładzie francuskiego i angielskiego przekładu powieści „Pod Mocnym Aniołem” Jerzego Pilcha. Celem pracy jest odpowiedź na pytanie w jaki sposób tłumaczone są nazwy własne osobowe, które z natury rzeczy nie posiadają swoich ekwiwalentów uznanych w językach docelowych oraz jakie techniki tłumaczenia przeważają w ich przekładzie. W tym celu autorka przeanalizowała techniki tłumaczenia zastosowane wobec antroponimów sztucznych w dwóch przekładach powieści i zbadała związek pomiędzy formą nazwy osobowej a wyborem tłumacza. W przekładzie tej kategorii nazw dominującą techniką okazało się być tłumaczenie syntagmatyczne; na 30 nazw własnych z tekstu oryginalnego przetłumaczonych w ten sposób zostało 18 antroponimów w języku francuskim i 19 w języku angielskim. Pozostałe zidentyfikowane techniki to kolejno: tłumaczenie syntagmatyczne z reprodukcją, reprodukcja, ekwiwalent funkcjonalny, pominięcie i dodanie. Nazwy bohaterów wykreowane przez pisarza są wymagające w tłumaczeniu, ponieważ tłumacz nie może oprzeć się na żadnym użytym wcześniej sposobie ich tłumaczenia i stanowią wyzwanie, zwłaszcza kiedy są silnie związane z kulturą języka docelowego.
The aim of this work is to present the problem of translation of fictive anthroponyms on the example of French and English version of „Pod Mocnym Aniołem” by Jerzy Pilch by answering the questions: how those fictive anthroponyms are translated and which techniques are used the most often. For this purpose, we analyze translation techniques of anthroponyms in French and English and the connection between the form of an anthroponym and the translator’s choice. In this category, literal translation has the highest frequency (18 French and 19 English names of the total 30), the other techniques are literal translation with borrowing, borrowing, functional equivalent, reduction, and addition. The names of all characters created by the writer are difficult to translate because those elements do not have any equivalents known by the culture of the target language.

The article discusses the relation between comparative studies of Jerzy Pietrkiewicz and his translations of Polish and English poetry. As the provided analyses indicate, the translator introduces a variety of subtle modifications into the target versions. These modifications result in establishing several types of intertextual links between the two poetic traditions Pietrkiewicz simultaneously discusses in his academic essays.

The article discusses a translation of a Carol Shields’s novel Swann. A Mystery (1987) by a Polish poet Ludmiła Marjańska (Zagadka wiecznego pióra, 1998). Marjańska’s translation is not an easy one to assess: it contains some shifts as well as simple mistakes, but Polish versions of lyrics quoted in the novel as written by a mysterious, unacknowledged (and non-existing) poet Mary Swann are undeniably its strongest point. What makes them more interesting, they show close affinity to poems by Emily Dickinson translated by Marjańska – and to her own poetry.

The results show that although the translator’s paratext is sometimes inevitable, although it may only fill the gaps in the readers’ knowledge – it will not provoke the same emotional reaction as the original.

Opis:
China is one of the very few countries in the world that managed to transform its online sphere both into a vibrant literary scene and into a tool of successful soft power. Some writers who represent the advent of online literature (wangluo wenxue) still enjoy best-selling and long-selling status. Despite that, the wide readership of such authors as Anni Baobei, Han Han or Murong Xuecun has not been followed by significant academic interest. This paper draws from the contribution made by Shao Yanjun to analyze whether the New-Style Literary Mechanisms (such as online literary forums) put forward by him shape textual features, and if so, whether these should be reflected in translation. The research combines literary criticism and translation theory perspectives to present some key features of Chinese Internet Literature by presenting an example of a popular short story authored by Anni Baobei Sisterhood (Qiyue yu Ansheng). The analysis of stylistic and linguistic characteristics of the translated excerpts is conducted from three perspectives: the specific text economy, unorthodox punctuation, and the attempt to recreate the mediatic realm of the source text conveyed inter alia through the approach to CSI (Culture-Specific Items). It is found that texts created under the new-style literary mechanism regime may influence the translation strategy and constitute the novelty of wangluo wenxue.

The article examines five Polish translations of the famous ballad The Raven written by Edgar Allan Poe. The translations come from different periods; the efforts by Przesmycki and Beaupre belong to the period of “Młoda Polska”, and date roughly from the tum of the nineteenth and twentieth century. The translation by Kasiński, although it was created a few decades later, still shows a clear influence of the specific aesthetics of the “Młoda Polska” movement. These three translations, in spite of numerous differences, form quite a uniform set, with the dominant underlying strategy of domestication, which manifests itself in “ennoblement” and “clarification”. By contrast, the two contemporary translations, by Barańczak and by Kozak, lack the stylistic homogeneity of their predecessors. They are also characterized by the various departures from the original, motivated by the different subjective approaches taken by each translator. None of the five examined Polish translations has attained the satisfactory degree of equivalence with respect to the original text.

The subject of the article is the question of rendering the addressee in the Polish translations of Song of Myself by Walt Whitman, in which a certain indeterminacy in the shaping of the recipient can be observed. The crucial distinction between the intratextual addressee and the extratextual addressee projected by the text, based on the typology proposed by David Herman, allows taking into consideration the personal reader as the communicative partner of the speaker in the poem. Initially, the Polish translation of the poem by Andrzej Szuba projects a community as the addressee, whereas from the translation by Ludmiła Marjańska the image of the individual recipient emerges. However, further on in the translation by Szuba the collective addressee changes into the single one, whereas in the translation by Marjańska the opposite process takes place because in the final section the individual addressee turns into the collective one. But it is not an unspecified community that is the participant of the communicative situation projected by the text; it is an individual, it is each personal reader. It is the individual extratextual addressee that is the beneficiary of the poetic undertaking. Unfortunately, the existing Polish translations are not conducive to the understanding of the role assigned to the extratextual addressee by the text, and make it hard for the Polish reader to form a proper mental image of the recipient projected by the poem.

Opis:
This essay examines Italian translations of three Polish novels for young adults, written and set in communist Poland of the 1960s. The analysis focuses on the problems related to the translation of the culture-specific elements of Polish reality in that historical period, almost completely unknown to the young readers in Italy. An in-depth contrastive study of the strategies applied by the translators takes into consideration different channels of the transfer from the source text to the target text. Ożogowska’s translation has been made directly from Polish by an Italian native speaker, Domagalik’s novel is a secondhand translation from German, and Jurgielewicz’s book has been translated into Italian twice: firstly by a tandem of a native Polish speaker and an Italian author of children’s books and later by a native Polish speaker without extensive translational practice. The comparison between the texts brings forward the importance of extratextual factors in the process of translation.

Opis:
In his poetic output, Andrzej Bursa alluded to a variety of Polish and foreign artistic works: mostly poetry and prose, but not only (e.g. Goya’s Los Caprichos and Dante’s Divine Comedy). The paper discusses the intertextual allusions in Bursa’s poems and analyzes the translation techniques applied Kevin Christianson and Halina Abłamowicz (Utwory zebrane. Selected Poems, 2008). In the first part, a brief introduction of the issue of intertextuality and its translation is presented. The analysis concerns the function of those allusions and it leads to seeing what was preserved and what was lost in translation, and in what way it influences the final form of the English versions. As in a number of cases the translators did not use the already existing (and published) English translations of the quoted works, a question are asked whether the references remained recognizable.
