If Ω is a Lip(1,1//2) domain, μ a doubling measure on $∂_{p}Ω, ∂//∂t - L_{i}$, i = 0,1, are two parabolic-type operators with coefficients bounded and measurable, 2 ≤ q < ∞, then the associated measures $ω_{0}$, $ω_{1}$ have the property that $ω_{0} ∈ B^{q}(μ)$ implies $ω_{1}$ is absolutely continuous with respect to $ω_{0}$ whenever a certain Carleson-type condition holds on the difference function of the coefficients of $L_{1}$ and $L_{0}$. Also $ω_{0} ∈ B^{q}(μ) $ implies $ω_{1} ∈ B^{q}(μ)$ whenever both measures are center-doubling measures. This is B. Dahlberg's result for elliptic measures extended to parabolic-type measures on time-varying domains. The method of proof is that of Fefferman, Kenig and Pipher.

Opis:
Cheiloscopy is a forensic investigation technique that deals with the identification based on lip traces. Based upon the research, it was established that the arrangement of lines on the red part of human lips is unique for each human being. The present study is an attempt to determine the pattern of lip prints and evaluate its uniqueness in a sample of Naga population and also their association with print in the four quadrants of the lip. A total of 100 (15-40) years individuals were randomly selected. With the help of brush a layer of lipstick was applied on the lips of the subject. Following the basis of Tsuchihashi’s classification the lip prints collected were studied. It was found that Type I’ pattern was predominant among the studied subjects followed by Type I and Type III pattern while Type V pattern was the least frequent Lip pattern distribution in (all four quadrants) in both males and females of Nagas. It is found that no two or more persons had similar features of lip grooves. The frequency of repetition of the lip print pattern in successive quadrant is found to be high. Lip print pattern can be used as an additional tool for personal identification.

Opis:
The aim of this acoustic study is to analyse the phoneme [ṭ] produced by school children surgically operated on for the cleft palate or cleft lip, in order to examine their vocal characteristics, to provide speech therapists with numerous concrete analyses of voice and speech, to effectively support them and to prevent some serious outcomes on their psychological and academic development. The motivation for this study was mainly stemming from the difficulties that Algerian schoolchildren with clefts encounter in the pronunciation of this phoneme. To carry out the study, several acoustic parameters were investigated in terms of the fundamental frequency F0, the first three formants F1, F2, and F3, the energy E0, the Voice Onset Time (VOT), the durations [CV] and [V] of the subsequent vowel [a]. For the analysis, further important parameters in the field of pathological speech were deployed, namely the degree of disturbance of F0 (jitter), the degree of disturbance of intensity (shimmer) and the HNR (Harmonics to Noise Ratio). Results revealed disturbance in the values of F1, F2, and F3 and stability in the values of F0. Another important reported aspect is the increase in the value of the VOT due to the difficulties in controlling the plosives’ successive closure and release.

Opis:
This paper focuses on combining audio-visual signals for Polish speech recognition in conditions of the highly disturbed audio speech signal. Recognition of audio-visual speech was based on combined hidden Markov models (CHMM). The described methods were developed for a single isolated command, nevertheless their effectiveness indicated that they would also work similarly in continuous audiovisual speech recognition. The problem of a visual speech analysis is very difficult and computationally demanding, mostly because of an extreme amount of data that needs to be processed. Therefore, the method of audio-video speech recognition is used only while the audiospeech signal is exposed to a considerable level of distortion. There are proposed the authors’ own methods of the lip edges detection and a visual characteristic extraction in this paper. Moreover, the method of fusing speech characteristics for an audio-video signal was proposed and tested. A significant increase of recognition effectiveness and processing speed were noted during tests – for properly selected CHMM parameters and an adequate codebook size, besides the use of the appropriate fusion of audio-visual characteristics. The experimental results were very promising and close to those achieved by leading scientists in the field of audio-visual speech recognition.

Opis:
Rotary lip seal is widely used in aircraft and its performance affects the safety of the aircraft. Hence, it is necessary to estimate useful lifetime and reliability of the seal. Degradation of rotary lip seal is always with random effects, which cannot be considered by theoretical failure mechanism analysis. Hence, in order to consider the random effects of rotary lip seal degradation, stochastic processes are applied. Furthermore, considering the monotonic degradation of the seal, Gamma process and inverse Gaussian process are selected as the candidate processes. To combine the candidate processes, Bayesian model averaging is introduced. Based on the failure mechanism analysis and numerical simulation, the theoretical wear path is predicted and corresponding linearization method is proposed. The measured degradation data is converted and the seal wear process is transformed to a linear degradation process. The model parameters and model probabilities are evaluated by fully Bayesian inference method. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by comparing the predicting degradation and experimental observations. The proposed method can be used to evaluate reliability and useful lifetime of rotary lip seal. According to sensitivity analysis, an effective way to improve lifetime and reliability of the seal is to increase the wear depth threshold.
Skuteczność przedstawionej metody weryfikowano porównując przewidywane i obserwowane wartości degradacji. Proponowaną metodę można wykorzystywać do oceny niezawodności i żywotności obrotowego uszczelnienia wargowego. Przeprowadzona analiza czułości pokazuje, że skutecznym sposobem na poprawę żywotności i niezawodności omawianego typu uszczelnienia jest zwiększenie progu uszkodzenia w postaci maksymalnej głębokości zużycia.

Introduction. Cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CLP) is associated with hypodontia, supernumerary teeth, dysmorphology of the crown or root shape, teeth impaction and malposition. The prevalence of anomalies is higher than in general population. Objective. The aim of the review is description of dental anomalies affecting children with cleft lip or without cleft palate. Abbreviated description of the state of knowledge. The most common anomaly is teeth agenesis with prevalence of 28% – 66% of patients with CLP. Permanent dentition is more often affected (52.7%) than primary (16.2%), the cleft-side lateral incisor is most often missing. Hypodontia increases with severity of the cleft. Supernumeraries were found in 17.7% of the subjects with cleft lip and/or palate for primary maxillary dentition, and in 5.7% for permanent maxillary dentition. Supernumerary teeth are mostly maxillary laterals, both inside and outside the cleft, and have different variations in morphology and size. The anterior maxilla is a main area for supernumeraries occurrence. Lateral incisor in the cleft area is often peg-shaped, its microdontia was revealed in 5.6%; they can also have enamel hypoplasia – 8.9% of cases. Macrodontia was found in 12.5% and taurodontism in 15.2%. Canine impaction prevalence is different in studies from various cleft centres and ranged from 0% – 58%. Rotations of central incisors was found in the area of cleft in 86.7%. Transposition of maxillary canine and first premolars was found in 5.5% of bilateral, 8% of right, and 3.3% of left unilateral clefts in the study. Summary. Multiple teeth anomalies affect the population of children with cleft lip with or without palate. The most common problem is hypodontia. Treatment process of these patients demands experienced specialists in different fields of dentistry and complex, rigorous dental care.

Purpose: We examined the reliability of measurements using a newly developed perioral muscle pressure measuring device with a lip piece in healthy adults. Methods: Subjects were 40 healthy men (25.8 years) with normal stomatognathic function. Perioral muscle pressure measuring device with a lip piece was used to measure upper lip, lower lip and tongue pressure, and a balloon-based measurement device was used to measure tongue and cheek pressure. Each measurement was taken twice with a 1-min interval between the two measurements. We determined intra-rater reliability by using the intra-class correlation coefficient as a test of relative reliability. As a test of absolute reliability, Bland–Altman analysis was used to assess systematic bias and the 95% confidence interval of the minimal detectable change was calculated. Additionally, the coefficient of variation was calculated. The Spearman–Brown formula was calculated the number of measurements needed to achieve a confidence coefficient ≥0.9. Each set of measurements was followed by a second set that were taken 1 week later. Results: All measurements showed high values of intra-class correlation coefficient. Upper lip, tongue, and cheek pressure can be determined based on a single measurement, while lower lip pressure requires averaging twice. No systematic bias was observed. The coefficients of variation of measurements were almost the same between the two devices. Conclusion: Measurements were highly reliable regardless of the type of perioral muscles. Our findings suggest that the method described in this study is useful as a quantitative chair side method for examining perioral muscle pressure.

Visual phonetics covers deaf people visual perception of speech and hard of hearing people visual-auditory perception of speech. The most commonly used term for this activity is lip-reading. The beginnings of researchers’ interest in this subject date back to the 17th century. In the Polish lands the first to deal with this topic was Jan Siestrzyński, in the beginning of the 19th century. Lip-reading is not an easy skill to master. Several dozen sounds of Polish language correespond to only few visible articulation layouts which means that some sounds that differ acoustically can look the same (e.g. p,b,m) as they are represented by the same articulation layout, Moreover some sounds of Polish language are imperceptible.

Cleft lip and/or palate is one of the most common birth defects in the human population. It is responsible for 65% of craniofacial developmental anomalies, and the therapeutic procedure in this defect, due to the variety and complexity of problems that potentially result from it, can be extremely difficult. Numerous controversies concern both the surgical procedure itself, both primary and secondary, as well as rehabilitation, which in the simplest terms concerns maxillofacial conditions and speech. Over the last quarter of a century, there have been particularly many changes in the concept of treatment of orofacial clefts. This article presents them highlighting the most important new trends. With regard to the surgical treatment itself, the global tendency has been to shorten the date of primary surgical closure of the clefted palate. According to current standards, it should take place in the first year of a child’s life, which is related to both the development of pediatric anesthesiology and a modern view on speech and occlusion rehabilitation in this defect.

An investigation was conducted to evaluate the effect of lip washing on coal flotation at Anglo American’s Goedehoop South (GHS) fine coal plant in South Africa. In the test-work, performance of cells with lip washing system were compared with baseline cells without lip washing in terms of coal yield and coal quality. Yields observed with lip washing were significantly higher than those of baseline cells. Improvements of up to 15% were recorded. The product obtained at low flotation reagent dosages (1.30–1.45 kg/t) on lip wash cells had ~16.85% ash content against ~17.65% with baseline cells, suggesting that higher yields could be achieved at superior qualities to those achieved with baseline cells. At higher reagent dosages (1.60–1.75 kg/t), coal yields further improved but quality reduced on lip wash cells. Calorific Values (CV) of coal products obtained by lip washing and baseline flotation were similar. When different coal particle size fractions were floated separately, the yield increased as particle size increased from 75 to 300 μm and then decreased from 300 to 500 μm for both baseline and lip washing flotation. Lip washing caused a marked increase in the yield for finer particles (< 300 μm) with optimum size class of between 212 – 300 μm. In addition, a much bigger increase in the yield was achievable with lip washing of lower quality coal. The ash content after lip washing of poor-quality coal were also comparable to the ash content after lip washing of good quality coal.

Real-time mimicking of human facial movement on a 3D head model is a challenge which has attracted attention of many researchers. In this research work we propose a new method for enhancing the capturing of the shape of lips. We present an automatic lip movement tracking method which employs a cosine function to interpolate between extracted lip features in order to make the detection more accurate. In order to test the proposed method, mimicking lip movements of a speaker on a 3D head model is studied. Microsoft Kinect II is used in order to capture videos and both RGB and depth information are used to locate the mouth of a speaker followed by fitting a cosine function in order to track the changes of the features extracted from the lips.

A retrospective analysis of the lip cancer morbidity in the Podkarpackie region and in Poland in the years 1963–2013 was carried out based on data from the literature and our own research. Results and conclusion. A steady decline in the incidence of lip cancer in Podkarpacie has been observed since 1982 for men and 1983 for women. In Poland these trends have been observed since 1972 for men and 1993 for women. In the analyzed period significant changes in the incidence structure in terms of sex are observed – from approximately 1:10 (women / men) in 1963 similarly in Podkarpackie and Poland – to 1:4.6 in Podkarpacie and 1: 2.6 in Poland in 2013.
