One of the main themes in the 20th century disagreements about man is the question of freedom, which seems to be the most complicated and, at the same time, intriguing phenomenon in the characteristics of the human subject. Karol Wojtyła suggests positioning freedom not only in the horizon of the irreducibility of the person as a subject, who autonomously decides about self and gives direction to own activities, but also in the area of interpersonal community. Being a person as a free subject appears as “in relation to” or “referring to” (something, somebody). We respond to values by making choices. The world of values is extremely rich and varied. It also encompasses other people, who are in relation to one another. Therefore, to be a person means more than just to be for oneself, in oneself and by oneself. To be a person is to be in relation to other people and to values. The community-oriented character of freedom is focused on in the philosophical writings by Karol Wojtyła, who on numerous occasions emphasizes the fact that a person may reach fulfilment through another human being, in a community with others, without losing anything of own subjectivity or individuality. Wojtyła wishes to deal with the problem of one of the fundamental conditions upon the fulfilment of which the community I-You may become a reality of subjects fulfilment. In order to achieve this purpose, Wojtyła undertakes analyses of participation, solidarity, community, whose proper specification in the perception of freedom aims at emphasizing the sense of man’s existence together with other human beings, on the one hand, and the purpose of man’s earthly journey, on the other hand.

The History of Ethics has often dissociated experience and rational normativity, which are the epistemological components of Ethics. Scheler has tried the synthesis of both through the phenomenological a prioris. But this experience is emotional and thus does not integrate enough in itself the person. This article analyses and develops the thesis of Wojtyla that there is a phenomenological experience which is simultaneously anthropological and ethical. For such an experience reveals the person in acting and her moral growth with the dinamysm of the person.

The issue of dynamism plays an important role in Karol Wojtyła’s philosophical anthropology. His study takes into account the context of the philosophy of being and the philosophy of consciousness. He emphasizes the importance of experiencing one’s own subjectivity in the course of dynamism. The purpose of the article is to present the structure of human dynamism proposed by Wojtyła. It contains three types of dynamism: dynamism of suppositum, dynamism in a human being (when something happens to him) and dynamism of human action. The first is in the metaphysical field, two more in the phenomenological field. This structure also contains the fieri factor understood as directing the dynamism to the subject.

In the article the concept of the transcendence of the human person worked out by cardinal Karol Wojtyla is presented. The supremacy of human activity over activity of other beings is expressed in it. It manifests itself, according to Karol Wojtyla, in performing free, spiritual cognitive and appetitive acts. The description of transcendence accentuates the phenomenology of the human act as a cognitive and volitional act. The ultimate internal rationality of the person’s transcendence is, according to Wojtyla, their spirituality.
Artykuł przedstawia koncepcje transcendencji osoby wypracowaną przez Karola Wojtyłę. Wyraża się w niej wyższość ludzkiego działania nad aktywnością innych istot. Według Wojtyły przejawia się ona w spełnianiu wolnych duchowych aktów poznawczych i pożądawczych. Opis transcendencji akcentuje fenomenologię czynu ludzkiego jako czynu poznawczego i wolitywnego. Ostateczną, wewnętrzną racją transcendencji osoby według Wojtyły jest jej duchowość.

Umożliwia zrozumienie świata, siebie, drugiego i jednoczenie się z życiem innych. Przeżycie jest polem przejawiania się sumienia. Na płaszczyźnie teoretycznej kategoria przeżycia ma istotne znaczenie dla wykazania niesprzeczności między sferą subiektywną a obiektywną osoby oraz między zależnością od prawdy a wolnością ludzką.
The author aims to develop Karol Wojtyła’s conception of ‘lived experience’ expounded in his book The Acting Person. The author holds that an experience that is ‘lived through’ engages the entire psychological structure of the person and is triggered by external circumstances. ‘Living through’ one’s experiences is a mark of the human being, it points to the ontological status of the human person, and to the fact that, in her actions, she necessarily refers to the sphere of values. It also enables the human person to comprehend the world, to comprehend herself as well as the other human beings, thus making their lives her own. The sphere of ‘lived experience’ also provides the ‘space’ for the manifestations of conscience. As a theoretical insight, the category of ‘lived experience’ is significant in that it makes it possible to show the non-contradiction between the subjective and the objective faculties of the person, as well as between the person’s adherence to truth and her freedom. Karol Wojtyła’s Osoba i czyn (in English translation known as The Acting Person) is certainly an extraordinary book having considerable significance for contemporary human philosophy. And because the philosophical or quasi-philosophical concept of the human person, consciously or not, explicitly or implicitly, is always at the root of any sociological, psychological, pedagogical or even economic theory, the importance of this work is even greater. It involves both the humanities and social sciences. The purpose of this article is to point out the benefits of this groundbreaking book. In particular, it allows us to rethink the paradigmatic foundations of these sciences. At the same time, it attempts to show how necessary is a critical revision of their own paradigmatic basis. I would also like to consider the essence of the human concept, especially from the perspective of critical realism. Especially, I deal with the issue of subjectivity and justification for the choice of this concept as the key to understanding individual agency. I am convinced that agency is only one dimension of subjectivity and does not allow us to understand the whole problem of autonomy, human freedom, and the meaning of humanity. Wojtyła’s The Acting Person seems to provide extremely important arguments in favor of my thesis. It also helps, I think, to understand the essence of individual subjectivity, issues of fundamental importance in our time, peculiarly, in the broadly understood human sciences.

Filmy o Janie Pawle II kręcono już za jego życia. Zarówno w pełnometrażowych obrazach fabularnych, jak i w realizacjach dokumentalnych, będących swego rodzaju przewodnikami po najważniejszych wydarzeniach wielkiego pontyfikatu, twórcy starali się ukazać dzieje człowieka, który swoją posługą zmieniał oblicze świata – czynił go lepszym. W niniejszym artykule starano się poznać i przedstawić źródła duchowej mocy Wojtyły – opowiedzieć o jego „seminarium domowym” i o drodze, którą musiał przebyć, aby zostać kapłanem. Kreatorzy świata przedstawionego oparli swój przekaz na dokumentach archiwalnych, świadectwach osób z najbliższego otoczenia Papieża, a także na wspomnieniach Jana Pawła II. Korzystając z takiej bazy materiałowej, reżyserzy ukazali widzom wędrówkę Lolka/Karola do Boga, do jego niezwykłej z Nim zażyłości. Drogę, która była dla Papieża procesem otwierania się na Miłość – pielgrzymką do „sensu istnienia”.
Several films about John Paul II were shot during his lifetime. Both in feature films and documentary productions, which are a kind of guide to the most important events of the great pontificate, the film-makers tried to depict the history of a man who, through his service, transformed the face of the world by making it better. In this article, efforts are made to study and present the sources of Wojtyła’s spiritual power – to talk about his ‘home seminary’ and the path he had to follow to become a priest. The creators of the worlds presented based their message on archival documents, the testimonies of those people closest to the Pope, as well as on the recollections of John Paul II. Based on such material, the directors showed the viewers the journey of Lolek/Karol towards God, towards his extraordinary intimacy with Him, a path which was, for the Pope, a process of opening himself up to Love – a pilgrimage to the ‘sense of existence’.

Artykuł przedstawia relacje między alumnami seminarium duchownego w Krakowie a kard. Karolem Wojtyłą. Źródłami są pisane przez alumnów kroniki seminaryjne oraz kleryckie czasopismo „Novum Tempus Liberum”. W swoich homiliach i konferencjach kierowanych do alumnów ks. kardynał najczęściej posługiwał się obrazem rodziny, dlatego często przybywał do seminarium. Starł się także poznać swoich przyszłych kapłanów poprzez indywidualne rozmowy i wspólne spotkania (opłatek, imieniny). Dzięki temu wytwarzała się szczególna więź biskupa i przyszłych kapłanów. Po jego wyborze na papieża wiele zwyczajów, które on wprowadził pozostały w formacji kapłańskiej na kolejne lata.
The article presents the relationship between the alumni of the seminary in Krakow and Cardinal Karol Wojtyła. Sources are seminary chronicles written by the alumni and the clerical journal “Novum Tempus Liberum”. In his homilies and conferences addressed to the alumni, Cardinal most often used the image of the family, so often came to the seminary. He also tried to get to know his future priests through individual conversations and joint meetings for (Christmas Vigil, name day). Thanks to this, a special bond of the bishop and future priests was created. After his election as pope, many of the customs he introduced remained for the following years.

The article shows the work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of Christians and in the apostolic mission of the Church. It underlines the role of prayer to the Holy Spirit in Karol Wojtyła’s life as well as his apostolic commitment associated with receiving the sacrament of Confirmation. During his pastoral ministry as the Bishop of Krakow he gave special attention to explain the doctrine of this sacrament; putting out its significance for individuals and parish communities. Cardinal Wojtyła, as the head of Commission for the Lay Apostolate in the Polish Episcopate, proposed some specific reforms in the pastoral programs to increase the significance of Confirmation for the apostolic engagement of young people. He was convinced that different forms of renewal of Confirmation were needed in the pastoral life of the Church. During his visit in Poland in 1979 and 1991, John Paul II proposed a rite of renewal in the historical context, emphasizing the role of the Holy Spirit in contemporary history and the need to be open to his work in ours lives.
Artykuł ukazuje działanie Ducha Świętego w życiu chrześcijan i w apostolskiej misji Kościoła. Przypomina o roli modlitwy do Ducha Świętego w życiu Karola Wojtyły oraz jego zaangażowanie duszpasterskie związane z udzielaniem sakramentu bierzmowania. Pełniąc posługę biskupa krakowskiego, kładł on nacisk na wyjaśnienie teologii bierzmowania i jego znaczenia w życiu chrześcijanina i wspólnoty Kościoła. Jako przewodniczący Komisji Apostolstwa Świeckich, działającej w ramach Konferencji Episkopatu Polski, zaproponował przeprowadzenie zmian w programie pastoralnym, mających na celu większe podkreślenie znaczenia bierzmowania dla apostolstwa młodych. Podczas papieskich wizyt w Polsce w 1979 i 1991 roku Jan Paweł II dokonał odnowy sakramentu bierzmowania w wymiarze eklezjalnym, narodowym i historycznym, zwracając tym samym uwagę na działanie Ducha Świętego w sercach ludzi i w historii.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The paper addresses the role of memory in sustaining the continuity of culture. While culture is seen as an idealised cognitive system, comprising the knowledge, values, and beliefs of members of a community, language is viewed as a cognitive tool that functions an aid to cultural transmission. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: We underscore the fundamental importance of memory as a cornerstone of the correlation between the axiological and pedagogical aspects of the transfer of knowledge across generations of community members. The paper adopts a cognitive‑cultural viewpoint on the phenomenon of memory and its grounding in culture. We employ the cognitive‑linguistic methodology of converging evidence, including selected insights from cognitive psychology. In our study, we investigate this issue by exploring the imagery of religious language, the Bible being the ultimate source of Christian ideas on how to represent abstract notions concerning religious truths. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: Specifically, we analyse the use of linguistic imagery in John Paul II’s Roman Triptych. Since the Author’s speculative thought encourages meditation on the human condition in the world and their relationship with God, a substantial amount of imagery is Biblical in nature. RESEARCH RESULTS: We underscore the creativity of Wojtyła’s linguistic choices that reveal a specific conceptualisation of time and space, which derives from the Author’s sociocultural situatedness. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: In conclusion, we account for the role of spatial thought and external representations in shaping the unique space‑time of the Triptych. We suggest that the results of the linguistic‑cultural analysis may foster the dialogue between science and religion by offering our own interpretation of panchrony, which we show to be derivative of human situated cognition, rather than a label applicable to a perspective onto the language‑time relation within the domain of linguistic study (vis‑à‑vis the dichotomy of synchrony and diachrony).

Ordinary people (non-scientic society) trust reliable scientists who have good competence, skill and personality. Hence, integration of science and ethics brings up epistemic trust, on the one hand among scientists and on the other hand among scientists and non-scientic society. There are various kinds of ethics that can be a guide for the scientic work of scientists. The article deals with the problem of the importance of Karol Wojtyła’s philosophy. He is shown as a thinker interested in the achievements of many philosophers throughout history, like Aristotle, St. Augustin, Thomas Aquinas, Immanuel Kant or Max Scheler. However, he is also presented as someone who undertook his own way of philosophizing focused on the human person. Therefore the article underlines Wojtyła’s dialogue with other philosophers at the time when he was developing his own philosophical standpoint. Moreover, his philosophy is shown as a discipline associated with real problems rather than with meta-philosophical ones. The article also discusses Wojtyła’s philosophy of the human person and how it can deal with anti-personalist tendencies in contemporary philosophy. Finally, the author considers some difficulties associated with the philosophy of Wojtyła and how it should be developed in the future.

Poza samym zestawieniem i wskazaniem zasady podziału terminologicznego, jaką expressis verbis podaje Wojtyła, zaprezentowano pogłębioną analizę tychże zmian, której efekty wskazują na znacznie większe zróżnicowanie semantyczne i definicyjne obu terminów niż wynikałoby to z informacji pochodzącej od samego Wojtyły. Tekst ma charakter pionierski i przedstawiona w nim propozycja podziału zmian ma za zadanie wstępne naszkicowanie kierunku dalszych badań i w żadnym wypadku nie rości sobie prawa do wyłączności lub ostateczności.
The article presented here is aimed at introducing the terminological change (“ethics” – “morality”) in the archival versions of Karol Wojtyla’s habilitation thesis. In addition to the mere juxtaposition and indication of the principle of the terminological division as given expressis verbis by Wojtyla, an in-depth analysis of these changes is presented, the results of which indicate a much bigger semantic and definitional differentiation of the two terms than would be apparent from the information from Wojtyla himself. The text is of a pioneering nature, and the proposal presented herein for the division of changes is intended as a preliminary sketch of the direction of further research and in no way claims exclusivity or finality.

W roku 1966 ówczesny arcybiskup krakowski, Karol Wojtyła, zainspirowany przypadającą wówczas milenijną rocznicą chrztu Polski, napisał poemat Wigilia wielkanocna 1966. Utwór ten nawiązuje do osoby Mieszka I i jego decyzji przyjęcia chrztu. W swym zasadniczym zrębie jest filozoficzno-religijną medytacją, wykorzystującą język i środki poetyckiego wyrazu, ukazującą początek, sens i cel dziejów ludzkości w oparciu o dość precyzyjnie ukazaną wizję człowieka. Antropologia przedstawiona przez Autora poematu ufundowana jest na podstawach chrześcijańskich i ma wyraźnie polemiczny charakter wobec materializmu, światopoglądu oficjalnie obowiązującego w czasach komunistycznych. W zakresie historiozoficznym Wojtyła sprzeciwiał się wizji dziejów prezentowanej w nurcie marksistowskiego historyzmu. Problemy poruszone w utworze, także przedstawione przekonania i argumenty, nabierają nowej aktualności w czasie, gdy modna staje się tak zwana nowa humanistyka, zwana też humanistyką performatywną lub nieantropocentryczną, wyrastająca z tradycji marksowskiej i nawiązująca do historyzmu.
In 1966, Karol Wojtyła, the then Archbishop of Cracow, inspired by the Millennium of the Baptism of Poland, wrote a poem entitled Easter Vigil 1966. The poem evokes the profile of Prince Mieszko I, the Polish ruler who took the decision to accept the Christian baptism. The poem comprises a philosophical and religious meditation making use of poetic language and employing the stylistic means characteristic of poetry. The objective of the meditation is to show the beginning, the meaningfulness, and the goal of the humanity, and to do so based in a specific vision of man. The anthropology put forward by the author has Christian roots and manifests marks of a polemic with the materialistic view of the world, the outlook officially accepted in Poland in the communist times. In his philosophy of history, Wojtyła clearly refuted the official Marxist doctrine. Today, the problems he addresses in his poem, as well as the ideas and arguments he incorporates, assume a new relevance in the face of the new intellectual fashion for the so-called new humanities, also called performative humanities or non-anthropocentric humanities, which spring from the Marxist tradition and are rooted in historicism. This paper is focused on a volume of short essays and notes by Maria Kuncewiczowa entitled Notatki włoskie. Przezrocza (Italian notes. Slides) from 1985. The first part is devoted to the evolution and the literary realizations of the Italian journey, starting from 1918, in order to offer an interpretation of the place occupied by Kuncewiczowa’s work in the panorama of contemporary Polish literature. In the second part, the author analyzes the genesis and genre of this literary text, recognizing its characteristics as a silva rerum, a traditional formal model of Polish literature which experienced renewed fortune in the second half of the twentieth century. The third part of the essay constitutes its thematic core: the author analyzes the image of Rome in all its many facets, relating it to the writer’s poetics and worldview.

This article concerns the way of philosophizing by Karol Wojtyła; a special emphasis is put on the relation between philosophical anthropology and ethics in his thought. The Polish thinker was active in both of them and it seems initially that ethics was his main area of expertise. However, a close examination of select works of Wojtyła confirms that philosophical anthropology was his main field. He was interested in how the person is revealed in his acts, including moral acts. Thus, the person as such remains at the center of attention and reflection of the thinker and his involvement in ethics was to demonstrate how that person matures on the dynamic level. Karol Wojtyła is pre-eminently a philosopher of the human person.

The article discusses the issues of consumer lifestyle in the light of John Paul II personalism. Author describes circumstances of western culture and dangers which can result from the adoption of consumer mindset. The text shows the outline of concepts, ideas and pioneers of personalism, thus making the background to illustrate the main thoughts of Polish philosopher. The meeting point for both matters – consumerism and personalism – is reference to John Paul II words that light problems of limitless consumption. Subject of the article is as current as the important for a proper understanding of the human person in postmodern world.

PROPÓSITO CIENTÍFICO: Este texto presenta una visión sintética del personalismo de Karol Wojtyla/ Juan Pablo II poniendo especial énfasis en los aspectos sociopolíticos. PROBLEMA Y MÉTODOS DE INVESTIGACIÓN: La posición teórica de Karol Wojtyla/Juan Pablo II no es sencilla de establecer porque sufrió una evolución intelectual importante que, si no se tiene en cuenta, puede llevar a conclusiones erróneas sobre su pensamiento. Por ello, seguiremos un itinerario cronológico mostrando cómo a partir de sus influencias intelectuales originales, el tomismo y la fenomenología, elaboró progresivamente su propuesta original e integradora de filosofía personalista. PROCESO DE ARGUMENTACIÓN: Establecidos estos principios se muestran los rasgos principales de su propuesta personalista: 1) su contribución a la renovación de la ética a través de la denominada escuela ética de Lublin; 2) su elaboración de una original perspectiva sobre la ética sexual en Amor y responsabilidad; 3) algunas claves antropológicas de su obra maestra Persona y acción. Y, 4) sus propuestas en el ámbito sociopolítico, que se presentan a través de cuatro perspectivas: la participación como construcción de la persona en la acción social; su peculiar teorización de la relación persona‑sociedad; su propuesto sobre el bien común y los sistemas prójimo y comunidad. RESULTADOS DEL ANÁLISIS CIENTÍFICO: El análisis muestra que Karol Wojtyla ha sido capaz de desarrollar un personalismo original y potente a partir de sus premisas tomistas y fenomenológicas. Y, basado en esa original filosofía ha desarrollado también una perspectiva socio‑política original. Esta perspectiva es visible, entre otros aspectos, en su concepto de participación, la noción de bien común construida mediante la inclusión de una dimensión subjetiva; la tesis según la cual colectivismos e individualismos comparten la misma antropología y la primacía que otorga al sistema prójimo sobre el sistema comunidad en la estructuración de las relaciones sociales. CONCLUSIONES, INNOVACIONES, RECOMENDACIONES: Estos rasgos originales han sido estudiados en algunas investigaciones como las de Sánchez (2015) y Lozano (2016), pero todavía está pendiente un estudio en profundidad de esta aspecto de su pensamiento.

The issue of dynamism plays an important role in Karol Wojtyła’s philosophical anthropology. His study takes into account the context of the philosophy of being and the philosophy of consciousness. He emphasizes the importance of experiencing one’s own subjectivity in the course of dynamism.The purpose of the article is to present the structure of human dynamism proposed by Wojtyła. It contains three types of dynamism: dynamism of suppositum, dynamism in a human being (when something happens to him) and dynamism of human action. The first is in the metaphysical field, two more in the phenomenological field. This structure also contains the fieri factor understood as directing the dynamism to the subject.
Zagadnienie dynamizmu zajmuje ważne miejsce w antropologii filozoficznej Karola Wojtyły. Jego badania uwzględniają kontekst filozofii bytu oraz filozofii świadomości. Akcentuje znaczenie przeżycia własnej podmiotowości w trakcie dynamizmu.Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie zaproponowanej przez niego struktury ludzkiego dynamizmu. Zawiera ona trzy rodzaje dynamizmu: dynamizm suppositum, dynamizm uczynnień oraz dynamizm czynu. Pierwszy ujmowany jest w polu metafizycznym, dwa kolejne w polu fenomenologicznym. W ramach tej struktury ukazano także rolę, jaką pełni fieri, oznaczające skierowanie dynamizmu na swój podmiot.

Only communication focused on the person have a chance to be authentic and effective (without any mental barriers or obstacles to communication). This is the main conclusion of this article.

Announcing in the German Church the so called synodal way provoked discussions concerning the participation and joint responsibility of all the faithful in the implementation of the Church mission, especially with regard to exercising power and making binding decisions. The aim of the presented reflections (comments) is to look at the discussion in the light of the theory of participation, analysed by Karol Wojtyła in his work The Acting Person. The co-existence of the community of action and the personal value of the act and experiencing as one`s own jointly made decisions may set the direction for new paradigms of exploring sensus fidei.

Stefania Wojtyła (1891 - 1962) was a half-sister of Karol Wojtyła’s father. When Karol’s parents and his brother Edmund died, Stefania remained a next of kin of the later Pope. She was a techer by profession, worked in Biła City and in – situated nearby - Rybarzowice village, . During the Second World War she was initially unemployed, and then she was teaching in German schools in Biała and Dziedzice. At that time she signed German People’s List, so called The Deutsche Volksliste. After the war she was banned from working in the Biała county due to her attitude during the occupation of Poland. She decided to go to Stodoły village, near Rybnik in so-called Recovered Territories, where she took up a job of the headmaster of a school. She worked there until she went into retirement in 1958. The last years of her life she spent in Krakow, running a household of Karol Wojtyła - then a bishop.

Karol Wojtyła’s seminal essay, “thomistic Personalism,” presents an integral theory of the human person that may serve as the foundation for an authentically personalist psychology. Relevant to the contemporary field of psychology, which appears fragmented and in search of a unifying paradigm, Wojtyła considered theory (anthropology), research (epistemology), and practice (ethics). In terms of research, he identified four complementary methods of understanding the human person: revelation (theology), reason (philosophy), observation (empiricism), and introspection (experience). In terms of theory, Wojtyła addressed the rudiments of rychlak’s four dimensions of a personality theory: structure, motivation, development, and personality. In terms of practice, he described four guiding ethical principles: freedom for morality, freedom for love, personal good and common good, and transtemporal values. Wojtyła thus offered an outline for the project of a comprehensive psychology of persons with significant implications for the theory, research, and practice of psychology.

We use the term “person” when we want to point out that human existence is unrepeatable and unique. The assumption that man is a person constitutes a basis for the belief in the dignity, efficacy, and responsibility of the human individual. Karol Wojtyla built his conception of the person in the context of theological and philosophical discussions. Even though Wojtyła’s conception has been given a great deal of scholarly attention, it is worthwhile to juxtapose it with contemporary anthropological theories that derive from cognitive sciences. Cognitivists usually base their theories on biological and sociological premises. Some conclusions arrived at in the area of the cognitive sciences lead to mind-brain reductionism, a theory in which the human being is regarded as a body endowed with the function of the brain and as an entity whose individual traits are shaped by its social and cultural environment. This position undermines the ideas of free will and the substantial singularity of the human person. However, debates with this position have worked out a non-reductionist alternative, a theory known as emergentism. This theory treats the human mind as a distinct faculty, one which emerges as a phase in the brain’s development. Emergentists base their reasoning on the assumptions that the body is a unity and that the mind is not identical with it. It is my belief that emergentism can be fruitfully applied to the dynamic understanding of the person put forward by Wojtyła in the middle of the 20th century.

If one looks at Wojtyla’s Love and Responsibility, they can see a number of different ways that he applies Thomistic Personalism. According to him, true personal love must include both an objective and a subjective dimension. Wojtyla refers to the law of ekstasis, according to which the lover goes outside the self to find a fuller existence in another. Moreover, the defining characteris-tic of betrothed love is self-donation. Picking up on Wojtyla’s characterization of betrothed love as self-donation, I argue that the bible gives good grounds for illustrating the Spirit as the active agent of God in the world, particularly re-garding the Spirit as life-giver and animator of all creation through self-donation (or self-giving). The kenosis of the Spirit into creation amounts to betrothed love through self-donation. Thomas Jay Oord’s depiction of “essen-tial kenosis” makes numerous asseverations that are constructive for depicting love as self-donation. Several years ago, a collection of essays by theologians and scientists explored creation as The Work of Love, pointing to divine action as kenosis in which it is asserted that the Spirit has chosen to invite creation into a cooperative relationship, which also coalesces with Wojtyla’s conception of love as self-donation. Ultimately, I contend, the essence of personal love is transcended by self-giving. In the final analysis, we are given the capacity of self-possession in order to be able to give ourselves away. The essence of the self, therefore, is to transcend the self through betrothed self-donated love.

The purpose of the following analysis is to present the actions undertaken by the Polish People’s Republic authorities during the preparations and celebrations of the millennium anniversary against two important hierarchs of the Catholic Church in Poland: Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński and Archbishop Karol Wojtyła. The author describes the role of two bishops during the ‘Great Novena’ and the year of the main millennium celebrations and compares them in the light of party and state documentations.

Przedmiotem analiz autorki są modlitewne rozważania Karola Wojtyły – Jana Pawła II zawarte w zbiorze: Jestem bardzo w rękach Bożych. Notatki osobiste 1962–2003. Badane są te fragmenty tekstu, w których nadawca jest tożsamy z odbiorcą, a modlitewne akty o charakterze wewnętrznym – medytacje, kontemplacje i adoracje – tworzą jeden z składników dnia skupienia lub rekolekcji pojmowanych jako makrogatunek (gatunek w formie kolekcji). Ujęzykowione modlitwy wewnętrzne pozwalają na ich ogląd zarówno w aspekcie genologicznym, jak i pod kątem cech stylowych. W rekolekcyjnych rozmyślaniach Karola Wojtyły uwidocznione zostają takie wykładniki stylu religijnego, jak: symboliczne widzenie świata, dążenie do odsłonięcia tego, co trudno wyrażalne w języku dyskursywnym i niedostępne w doświadczeniu potocznym, kontemplacyjna postawa wobec rzeczywistości oraz stylistycznie rozumiana kategoria medytacyjności.
The author analyses meditative reflections by Karol Wojtyła – John Paul II, collected in a volume entitled I Am so Much in God’s Hands. Personal Notes, 1962–2003 (Krakow 2014). The author examines the fragments of the text in which the speaker is identical with the addressee, and where internal prayer acts: meditations, contemplations and adorations. They are components of a reflection day or a religious retreat defined as a macro-genre (a collective genre). When expressed through language, internal prayers can be viewed in their text-typological and stylistic aspects. Karol Wojtyła’s retreat-related meditations reflect exponents of the religious style including a symbolic vision of the world, an attempt to unveil the reality that is hard to depict through discursive language and unreachable to common experience, a contemplative attitude towards reality and a stylistic understanding of the category of meditation.

Altogether these papers demonstrate not only the degree to which Wojtyła relied on Aquinas’s anthropology, ethics and metaphysics, but also the insightfulness of Wojtyła’s arguments that the truth about the human person needs Thomistic personalism. As I’ve argued else-where, this is particularly the case given that the ubiquity of today’s secularism has left many unable to conceive that the wonders of nature have a divine cause, that missionaries have a divine wisdom worth hearing, and that love is more than a feeling. The secular person seeks comfort—not in God nor in self-transcending love—but in materialistic concerns or non-theistic and self-centered spiritualities. For, as John Paul II has pointed out, humans are attempting to live as if there is no God. The misery that inevitably results opens the door to searching for the better way offered by Thomistic personalism. However, more work by Thomistic personalists is necessary, especially in the realms of psychology, anthropology, family studies, personalist feminism, meta-physics, and ethics in the individual, commercial, social, cultural, and political realms.

This article presents Karol Wojtyła’s thinking on consciousness and its possible distortion called the ‘emotionalization of consciousness’. In consciousness two functions can be distinguished, namely a receptive function and an experiencing/interiorizing function. When the emotionalization of this dual structure takes place, consciousness is weakened in registering emotional facts (in their cognitive aspect) as well as in their proper experiencing (i.e. in referring them to the interiority of the subject). Wojtyła concentrates on self-knowledge as a power, which can contribute to limiting or eliminating the emotionalization of consciousness. However, he does not mention how to strengthen self-knowledge and make it more adequate for the job. Hence, in the paper, the author underlines the role of understanding and command of language, which can make self-knowledge a more efficient tool.

The relations between dignity, freedom and love in Karol Wojtyła’s philosophy have a strictly defined order. Dignity is the foundation of freedom in both an axiological and ontological sense. Dignity sets the axiological field for freedom, and also expresses the perfection of human-person existence as a rational and free being. Another relation is that freedom is for love, because thanks to freedom love is possible – and at the same time love protects freedom against willfulness. Finally, love is an affirmation of dignity – because only love can fully respond to the demands made by a person’s dignity. Thus, the order of relations can be summarized as follows: starting from dignity, through freedom and love, we return to dignity.
Relacje zachodzące między godnością, wolnością a miłością w filozofii Karola Wojtyły mają ściśle określony porządek. Godność jest fundamentem wolności zarówno w sensie aksjologicznym, jak i ontologicznym. Godność wyznacza pole aksjologiczne dla wolności, a także wyraża doskonałość bytowania człowieka-osoby jako istoty rozumnej i wolnej. Kolejna relacja polega na tym, że wolność jest dla miłości, ponieważ dzięki wolności miłość jest możliwa – a jednocześnie miłość zabezpiecza wolność przed samowolą. Wreszcie miłość jest afirmacją godność, ponieważ tylko miłość może w pełni odpowiedzieć na wymagania stawiane przez godność osoby. Zatem porządek omawianych relacji można streścić w następujący sposób: wychodząc od godności, poprzez wolność i miłość, powraca się do godności.

Artykuł jest próbą syntetycznego zestawienia wątków wspólnych występujących w refleksji nad uniwersytetem i jego istotą w pismach Karla Jaspersa oraz wypowiedziach Karola Wojtyły – papieża Jana Pawła II. Uderzające jest podobieństwo ujęć uniwersytetu oraz rozumienie samej jego istoty u obydwu myślicieli, pomimo odmienności czasu, w którym formułowali oni swoje opinie, oraz różnic w zakresie stanowiska filozoficznego. O tym, czy idea uniwersytetu zostaje wcielona w życie, czy też zaprzepaszczona, stanowi zdaniem obu myślicieli stosunek do następujących zagadnień: prawda, uniwersalność nauki, formacyjna rola uniwersytetu, powołanie i etos uczonego oraz wewnętrzny ustrój uniwersytetu. Przedmiotem szczególnej uwagi jest odpowiedzialność uczonego, bezinteresowność w poszukiwaniu prawdy oraz powinność formowania człowieczeństwa powierzonych jego pieczy studentów. W każdym z tych obszarów zachodzi znaczna zbieżność stanowisk, wypracowywanych przecież niezależnie od siebie i w innym kontekście historycznym. Fakt ten można interpretować dwojako: po pierwsze, świadczy on o aktualności problemów, przed którymi stają środowiska uniwersyteckie, po drugie zaś ukazuje uniwersalność myślenia Karola Wojtyły, który w swoich rozważaniach wykracza poza aspekty specyficznie religijne i adresuje swój przekaz jako ogólnohumanistyczne przesłanie do ludzi tworzących uniwersytet.
This article is an attempt at synthetically juxtaposing those common threads of reflection on the university and its essence which are present in the works of both Karl Jaspers and Pope John Paul II. What is striking is the similarity of the problem of the university and the understanding of its very essence by both thinkers, regardless of the different eras in which they formulated their opinions and the differences in their philosophical positions. According to both thinkers, whether the idea of the university is implemented or not is connected to its approach to questions of truth, the universality of science, the formational role of the university, the vocation and ethos of the scholar, and the internal system of the university itself. Worthy of particular attention is the responsibility of scholars, their selflessness in the search for truth, and their duty to mould the humanity of those students who are entrusted into their care. In each of these areas there is a far-reaching convergence of positions, each developed independently and in different historical contexts. This fact can be interpreted in two ways: firstly, it shows the topicality of the problems facing universities, and secondly, it shows the universality of Karol Wojtyła’s thinking, who, in his deliberations, goes beyond specific religious aspects and addresses his message as a general humanistic message to all of those who constitute a university.

The author compares the life and the works of Edith Stein and Karol Wojtyła, and shows her in the teaching of John Paul II. The first part deals with biographical aspects. After this philosophical researches are compared. Finally the article presents the pope’s teachings about Edith Stein as a philosopher, martyr, mystic and good example for women. This teaching took place on the occasion of beatification, canonization and the declaration of Edith Stein as patron of Europe.

Sensitivity, as the ability to respond to internal and external stimuli, undoubtedly plays an important role in the social action of persons. Without this ability -as in the case of indifference- human being lacks a perception that is necessary in response to a specific emergency situation or a need. This article focuses on the teaching of Karol Wojtyla in his major work Acting Person, with a particular emphasis on the question of the motivation of human action. We want to reply to three basic questions related to the topic: Does this ability strengthens or weakens the culture of the Internet age, especially in Western European society? What is the primary motive of human action? Is sensitivity an essential motive and a factor of development of the person and society? What practical consequences we can draw from the teachings of the Krakow thinker about sensitivity? A person, as defined by Wojtyla, that is isolated, remains indifferent. Similarly persons who are hypersensitive hinders themselves to a mature participation in responsible love. The first quality (indifference) leads persons to flee from their duties. The second (hypersensitivity) leads persons to be overwhelmed by this challenge. The first we can describe as lack of feeling, the second as excessive compassion. The diagnosis of Wojtyla (it is more important to be than to have) remains very current and is an important stimulus in which direction to go to promote motivation for social action, and to build a society of communion of persons. Instead of an individualistic dominated competitive struggle of egos, we should try to realize a society in which the encounter of persons is characterized by mutual devotion in love.

Few years ago, a poem by Karol Wojtyła, entitled „Przełom”, that is „The Turning Point”, was discovered. Written between 1942 and 1945, the reflection of young seminarian Karol begins with questions, and a personal and very significant answer: „It is thus that the Gothic of the soul and the Renaissance of the body fight in me”. The Gothic aspect indicates the sensitivity to the spiritual world of the future Pope. The Renaissance of the body is linked to its sporting nature and the desire to open to the true relationship with every man, the friendship. This study focuses its research around these two aspects of the internal integration of Karol Wojtyła, showing their development in pastoral and scientific research in the context of its Polish origins.

Not only during the period of his Pontificate, but also during previous years, the activity of Karol Wojtyła is worth recalling, appreciating and internalizing, and his preached and written teaching on responsible parenthood should be put into practice. The teaching about man, love, marriage, and parenthood is still relevant today. However, there are both those who support them as well as those who oppose them, particularly, opponents who avoid moral principles, especially in the field of the transmission of life. Therefore, a question arises about the effects of Cardinal Wojtyła’s efforts to protect the dignity of a child and a woman – mother, as well as morality in the area of procreation. The victory of the truth, visible in the encyclical Humanae vitae promulgated by Paul VI, is a success, while the spread of demoralization experienced to this day by groups promoting abortion and contraception and especially the poor moral condition of future spouses and parents, creates new challenges.
