The Kórnik Arboretum, now called the Arboretum of the Institute of Dendrology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, has a long and rich history dating back to the 18th-century garden of Teofila Szołdrska-Potulicka, although the collection began in 1826, when count Tytus Działyński began rebuilding the garden. Thanks to the great care of shown by the owners of Kórnik, as well as generations of people working there, numerous sources have been preserved that allow us to trace the changes that took place in this area, as well as to refer to the history of many of the park’s trees. Gathering information from these sources and comparing them with modern data is the subject of this article, which is intended to link the beginnings of the Arboretum with the present.

The subject of this article is the chancellery and archival analysis of the alderman’s and the magistrate’s book for the town of Kórnik from 1580–1607. At present the manuscript is kept at the headquarters of the State Archives in Poznań. Based on appropriately selected literature and information contained in the book, it was possible to carry out an external and internal critique of the source. It needs to be highlighted that the manuscript has only rarely been as a historiographical archival source.

W artykule poddano analizie nazwy ulic miejscowości gminy Kórnik położonej w powiecie poznańskim. Przeprowadzono analizę semantyczną i strukturalną. Nazwy ulic pod względem struktury pogrupowano na jedno-, dwu- oraz trój- i więcejelementowe, a także rozróżniono na takie, które mają charakter rzeczownikowy, przymiotnikowy oraz charakter wyrażeń przyimkowych. Dokonano również klasyfikacji semantycznej, zgodnie z którą wyróżniono następujące kategorie nazw: topograficzne, kierunkowe, kulturowe, relacyjne ponowione, pamiątkowe, geograficzne, odnoszące się do przyrody, metaforyczne, odzawodowe oraz inne. Na podstawie analizy strukturalnej stwierdzono, że najliczniejszą grupę stanowią krótkie nazwy jednoelementowe o charakterze przymiotnikowym. Analiza semantyczna pozwoliła stwierdzić, że największe kategorie semantyczne stanowią nazwy odwołujące się do przyrody, nazwy topograficzne oraz nazwy metaforyczne. W artykule przedstawiono także listę rangową ukazującą nazwy z największą liczbą nominacji, którą zestawiono z podobnym rankingiem odnoszącym się do tego typu onimów w skali kraju. Zwrócono również uwagę na zjawisko występowania w bliskim sąsiedztwie geograficznym nazw powiązanych ciągiem skojarzeń, chociaż nie zawsze zaklasyfikowanym do jednego pola tematycznego.
This article offers an analysis of the street names in the villages located in Kórnik Commune, Poznań County. Both semantic and structural analysis was performed. The street names were grouped according to whether they contained one, two, and three or more elements. They were also divided into substantival, adjectival, and adverbial ones. Semantic classification was also carried out, according to which the following categories of names were distinguished: topographic, directional, cultural, relational renewed, commemorative, geographic, referring to nature, metaphoric, derived from professions, and other. The structural analysis demonstrated that the most numerous category contained short, one-element adjectival names. The semantic analysis pointed out that the largest semantic categories contained names referring to nature, topographic, and metaphoric. The article provided also a rank list of names showing those with the highest number of nominations, which was juxtaposed with a similar nationwide ranking of this type of names. The author also noted that the names linked by a chain of associations tend to appear in close geographical proximity to each other, although they are not always classified into one thematic field.

The aim of the study was to analyse the effect of nature value on the value of undeveloped property based on the Kornik commune. The analysis was conducted in two aspects: (1) to calculate weights of individual characteristics by comparing pairs of undeveloped landed properties, and (2) to conduct spatial analyses using the MapInfo Professional 9,5 program, in which thematic maps were prepared, presenting analysed attributes affecting the value of undeveloped property. Analyses made it possible to determine the effect of individual factors on the value of undeveloped property. The greatest effect on the value of undeveloped property (increasing the value) was found for land function in the local physical development plan (weight of the characteristic 32%), distance from the city of Poznan (weight of the characteristic 19%), distance from surface waters (weight of the characteristic 18%), distance from the town of Kornik (weight of the characteristic 10%), quality of access roads (weight of the characteristic 7%) and distance from forests (weight of the characteristic 9%). In contrast, the vicinity of protected areas decreased the property value (weight of the characteristic 5%), which was caused by the limitations in the use of these areas.

Opis:
The Kórnik Library is one of the oldest and most valuable establishments in Poland. By creating a library during the Partitions of Poland and collecting valuable old books and manuscripts, Tytus Działyński intended to save and foster Polish culture and traditions for posterity. Heir to Tytus – Jan Działyński – secured and expanded the Library. Having no heir himself, Jan Działyński left the Działyński inheritance to his nephew, Władysław Zamoyski, who continued his grandfather's and uncle's work. Just before his death,  Władysław Zamoyski donated the entire inherited property to the Polish nation. In 1924, he established a Foundation meant to supervise the Library, a museum and the Institute of Dendrology. The Zakłady Kórnickie Foundation operated until 1953 when it was taken over by the Polish Academy of Sciences and has remained within its structure until today. The library continues assembling, developing and sharing its collections. The latest technologies have enabled us to provide the library and museum collections to the largest possible number of readers. The collections have been successively digitized and made available on the Digital Platform of the Kórnik Library created as part of the EU project POPC.02.03.01-IP.01-00-002/15 “Digital access to the resources of the Polish Academy of Sciences in the Library”.

This article presents the history and the former function of the house located at the corner of Zamkowa Street and the southern frontage of the market (currently 50 Wolności Square). The assumption that the facility functioned as a weigh house has not been confirmed by archival research. Built before 1773 by Teofila Potulicka, née Działyńska – the then-owner of Kórnik, the building, referred to in literature as the Lady’s inn, was one of the town public houses, in which alcoholic beverages manufactured in the owner’s brewery and distillery were served. When the new town hall, with its central part designated for an inn, was erected in 1775, the Lady’s inn situated at some distance to the trading place gave way to the much larger town hall inn. After all, it was the town hall which was the centre of the social and trade life of the town – its left wing housed the public weighing facilities, and there were traders’ stalls nearby. The town owner’s alcohol beverages were also served in the Na Piaskach inn the owner erected in the 1770s and in the Tumidaj inn built at the turn of the 19th century. At that time, two flats were made in the Lady’s inn and the building managed to survive to our own times in this form. Despite many refurbishments, its interior still features its 18th-century wooden ceiling, fireplaces and the chimney base of the former kitchen.

Juniperus communis (common juniper) is a shrub or small tree. Tree-like junipers are rare but important landscape elements. Even the largest junipers are rarely older than 100–120 years old. We would like to show some data on probably the oldest and by far the largest common juniper in Poland, blown down in 1957. It grew in village of Neple, in the park of the Bug and Krzna rivers (52.126°N, 23.517°E). Its age was estimated at c. 300 years, and it attained more than 10 m in height and c. 3 m circumference at 1.3 m above ground level. It was found that the basal part of the trunk was rotten inside, which makes it impossible to determine its exact age. The trunk with its main boughs was transported to the Kórnik Arboretum, conserved and preserved in the form of a monument until today. To our best knowledge, it was the largest common juniper in Poland and the second largest in Europe.

Thuja occidentalis and T. plicata belong to alien trees most frequently cultivated in Europe. Morphologically they differ significantly from each other and their natural ranges are geographically isolated, hence the taxonomic status of both taxa has never been questioned. In cultivation, however, these species are often very difficult to distinguish so speculations appeared that they can hybridize with each other. Reports about their hybrids growing in the Kórnik Arboretum, Poland, have been delivered several times; for the first time in 1933, then in 1957 and in 1981. In the latter publication, based on those hybrids, a new nothospecies Thuja ×plicatoides was described. That name, however, was not validly published, because its Latin diagnosis was limited only to a few words and no mention was made of how the hybrid differed from its parental species. The analysis of numerous arborvitae specimens growing in the Kórnik Arboretum, and in many other places in Poland, has shown that the earlier reports about the occurrence of Thuja hybrids in cultivation were fully justified. The results of this study were documented by numerous photographs showing the main diagnostic features of T. occidentalis, T. plicata and their hybrids. Special attention was paid to the characteristics of cones, which are rarely used in the Thuja taxonomy. The shape of cone scales, the length of the scale mucro and the structure of small 'lips' on the scale apices turned out to be significant cone features; the latter was used for the first time when distinguishing between both Thuja species. The cone and leaf features made it possible to recognize not only 'pure' species, but also their hybrids. The name Thuja ×plicatoides Seneta, for formal reasons has been rejected, so for the hybrids a new name Thuja ×senetiana has been proposed, which commemorates Włodzimierz Seneta, an outstanding Polish dendrologist.

Opis:
Between about 1414 and 1592, the castle in Kórnik belonged to the Górka family – representatives of the Polish Crown’s power elite in the Early Modern era. In the third quarter of the 16th century, on the initiative of its then-owner, Count Stanisław Górka, the castle and its surroundings were modernised and extended. This article seeks to reconstruct and interpret the resulting residence complex, with particular focus on the castle, but also the private town, family church and hunting lodge. Some basic questions are asked concerning the new architectural solutions appearing at the time, the provenance of the formal-ideal models, and the author of the modernization design. In the adopted research method, assuming an interdisciplinary approach, the residence is seen as resultant of the investor’s needs and possibilities arising from his social, political and financial position.

The article describes two Cyrillic Gospels from the Kórnik Library: BK 11985 and BK 896. It presents the cultural context of their creation, as well as their history, content, illuminations and a short lexical description. Both codices were the result of a cultural and spiritual revival in the Orthodox Church in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Both of them were luxury, professionally made goods; their copyists were experienced specialists. BK 896 represents a higher level of artistry. In view of their lexical characteristics, the manuscripts can be classified as the third so-called Mount Athos-Tyrnovo linguistic redaction of the Gospel.
