Opis:
In a process of continuously adjusting to and counteracting the circumstances of conflict since 2014, the Ukrainian media community has become polarized (Budivska & Orlova, 2017). Nygren et al. (2018) observe a confrontation between the ideal of neutrality in coverage and favoring “patriotic journalism” in practice among Ukrainian journalists. This article takes this discussion further and highlights the role of professional journalism associations and international organizations in the struggles within the journalism culture in the situation of conflict. The article uses Ginosar’s (2015) interpretation of Hanitzsch’s (2007) model of journalism culture and Mouffe’s (2013) conceptualization of agonistic vs. antagonistic struggle to discuss the project Two Countries — One Profession is initiated and supported by the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media. Finally, it draws on the reactions by the Ukrainian media community.

While it has generally been accepted that non-professional media actors empowered by novel digitally networked technologies are changing the media landscape in the West, this is less obvious in the case of sub-Saharan Africa. Recent years, however, have seen the emergence of a diverse range of citizen media in Africa, enabled by technologies such as mobile phones, blogs, micro blogs, video-sharing platforms and mapping. Through in-depth and focus-group interviews with selected experts and citizen journalism practitioners, as well as a review of the existing body of research, this study aims to identify emerging patterns and trends in African citizen journalism, paying particular attention to the Zimbabwean case. The research hopes to establish the notion that digital technologyenabled citizen journalism, although still restricted to a subset of African countries, provides a powerful counter-narrative to professional media that are often constrained, or even controlled, by national governments.

Opis:
The paper addresses the issue of explanatory journalism, which is becoming an increasingly popular and important form of communication in times flooded by verified information as well as misinformation and hoaxes. The study is of a theoretical character and critically evaluates knowledge from this area, placing emphasis on digitalization of journalism that has brought new communication instruments and platforms, thus increasing demands on information literacy and media education of a recipient. This phenomenon resulted in the establishment of several media projects aimed mainly at explaining complex terms or phenomena in a simple and comprehensive way or at interconnecting high-ranking state officials with influential businessmen. In the text, the authors address the role and status of explanatory journalism, its potential in relation to investigative journalism and data journalism - areas and topics that are urgent and beneficial for our society but are often difficult to comprehend for a reader due to their technicality and complexity.

Przedstawiony tekst dotyczy dziennikarstwa obywatelskiego w wymiarze lokalnym. W pierwszej części tekstu omówiono termin „dziennikarstwo obywatelskie”, podkreślając, że badacze odmiennie go definiują.
The presented text concerns the online journalism in the local dimension. In the first part of the text the term „citizen journalism” was described, with pointing that scientists define it in many ways. There were shown such important features of citizen journalism as grassroots character or publishing the content apart form mainstream media. The analysis are based on two examples: fanpage Olsztyn Żyje and the webpage Olsztyńska24, because they are examples of trends on the Polish media market. On the one side there is typical grassroots journalism, on the other side – media corporations (mainstream media) start to run services of citizen journalism, what seems to be a denial of the idea of citizen journalism.

The article investigates media organizations’ strategies to adapt to the new media ecology in which Twitter is renewing traditional news-production routines. Two main strategies are identified: a traditional approach aimed at one-way news dissemination, and a journalistic model that recasts the relationship with the audience and uses Twitter as a community building tool. It has been assumed that media outlets’ endeavours to gain centrality in the information system are associated with their ability in using the appropriate communication tools of Twitter and the implementation of strategies based on interaction with users.  Based on a comparative analysis of Twitter uses by newspapers in 31 countries, the study shows that the ability to manage the structural elements of the platform is widespread among media organizations. Concurrently, the relational strategy, i.e. the investment in community-building, although less widespread, is present in many countries and leads to an increase level of user involvement.

The aim of the article is to present the problem of invention in Polish contemporary narrative journalism. The analysis of creative non-fiction books written by Katarzyna Surmiak-Domańska, Jacek Hugo-Bader and Wojciech Jagielski helps to distinguish the levels of invention (e.g. incorporating elements of fantastic or realistic fiction, creating events in undercover journalism) in this literary-journalistic genre. While comparing the chosen examples, the author tries to show whether/ in what conditions fabricated or exaggerated facts lead to breaking a factographic pact between writer and reader.

This study investigates journalists’ self-censorship and introduces a phenomenon of unperceived collective self-censorship that demands a combination of detection methods. We conducted a content analysis of media critique texts (N=156) that discuss attacks on Estonian journalism. These results were combined with the content analysis of journalistic roles in the news (N=2409) and a survey on journalists (N=99) and completed with semi-structured interviews (N=14). The findings showed that accusations against journalists were frequently related to discourses regarding journalists’ interventionist or watchdog roles. Juxtaposing these results with quantitative data, it became evident that when aspects of interventionist and watchdog roles were criticized in the media texts, the performance of these roles decreased in the news. However, journalists’ self-assessment does not show the perception of this change. We argue that self-censorship was created unknowingly within the newsroom. External pressures – such as politically motivated attacks on journalism – may promote unperceived self-censorship.

Information is given by these variations in different, often interactive ways, with extensive visualizations. The role and function of the journalist himself is also changing.

What are the main topics of their columns? Do they have the opportunity to adopt an independent and critical stand towards the editorial staff ?

This paper explores the change in Estonian media organizations’ readiness to cooperate with freelance journalists. The interviews with editors of newsrooms of magazines, newspapers, and radio and television broadcasters were conducted in 2014 and 2019. The findings were additionally tested in the conditions of the Covid-19 crisis in 2020. The paper outlines how over the five years the editors have not only changed their perception of who freelance journalists are but how they express the readiness to outsource content from journalistic entrepreneurs. We conclude that the Estonian media market shows signs of adopting diverse collaborative forms that diverge from the journalistic field. The freelancers’ concept has changed, indicating integration of journalistic and entrepreneurial roles – the entrepreneurial journalist is seen less as the odd-jobber working on commission and more of a business partner.

The operative concept of remix translates into a renewed tension in the contemporary journalistic field by means of a complex and not pacific coexistence of a read/write and a read/only culture. This ambivalence has also been designated as a convergence or mash-up culture. Beyond its modern structural elements (overseas delegations, staff correspondents, special assignments, freelancers, stringers, fixers, translators), the overall framework of international news reporting is being remixed and challenged by the emergence of a renewed confederacy of correspondences supported by online digital networks. The combination of technology particularly the Internet and its graphical interface, the World Wide Web with the emergence of nonconventional journalists is transforming previous meanings and implications of eyewitnessing as a journalistic keyword. Traditional foreign correspondents no longer exercise hegemony over international news. This article, based on a comprehensive literature review, addresses the state of flux in international journalism signalling the emerging typologies and confronting those with the previous standard model of correspondence.

This paper presents the conceptual framework of a media experiment as a journalism education tool. It is driven by the thesis that professional engagement in contemporary media not only requires primary practical skills but also creativity to the extent of novel media and content structure. The media experiment that entails performance of an original journalistic task is a form of teaching creative skills. This paper contains the description of the educational programme arranged for within the framework of the said media experiment, outputs, and exemplified performance. The construct at issue constitutes the introduction for further applied research.

Opis:
Oriana Fallaci had the opportunity to closely observe the efforts the US made during the Space Race which was sealed in 1957 by the launch of the first Russian Sputnik. The journalist knew dozens of NASA workers (including astronauts, engineers and doctors) and others (external scientists, advertisers, writers). Based on the interviews and articles printed in L’Europeo, Fallaci published two books Se il Sole muore (1965) and Quel giorno sulla Luna (1970). Recently, the publishing house Rizzoli collected some of Fallaci’s texts that appeared in this weekly newspaper (L’Europeo) between 1964 and 1980 in the volume La Luna di Oriana (2018). It would be worth analyzing the cornerstones of Fallaci’s narrative approach, resembling in many ways the American New Journalism – with its tension between information and emotion, interpretation and persuasion – in her work before the famous war reports.

Opis:
Citizen journalism is frequently perceived as one of the most important developments in the media in early XXI century. However, several important issues have to be discussed in order to describe the nature of this phenomenon. One of these questions refers to the way citizen journalists cover important social and political events and debates – trying to participate in the public debate, and to shape public sphere. The most important question in this respect is: are they mostly neutral observers – or rather engaged activists? On the other hand, independently from the answer regarding mentioned question, we need to assess citizen journalists’ ability to product newsworthy, relevant stories which at the same time meet the standards of “serious” journalism (with its basic rules, as separation of facts and opinion). All these issues are analyzed in this article in context of results of research project “Training or improvisation? Citizen journalist and their journalistic education”, carried out in six European countries (United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, and Poland). This text concentrates on results from Poland, providing also some comparative data from other five countries. Research methods included: desk study which helped to map the field of citizen journalism and provide the most relevant examples in each country as well as semi-structured interviews with 9 (in each country, 54 in sum) practitioners in the field, representing three different types of citizen journalism.

JOURNALISM ( CULTURE
LANGUAGE
STYLE)
Opis:
The paper aims to point out some instances of language innovations appearing in written journalism and to comment on their contribution to the culture of present-day language. The data were obtained from the following Czech dailies published between 2000 and 2005: 'Mladá fronta DNES', 'Právo', and 'Lidové noviny'. As written journalistic texts rank among official types of communication, the logical expectation would be for them to employ strictly standard language, with moderately literary ways of expression. However, in practice this is very different. Contemporary journalism is open to language means (mostly lexical) from different stylistic levels. Many of these never establish themselves as permanent components of language. This is especially fortunate in the case of inadequately used, strongly pejorative expressions, which can hardly be considered a positive contribution to language culture.

Biblizms
modern Russian journalism
Opis:
Lexis as the most susceptible to changes part of the language is a reflection of the processes taking place in society. The end of the twentieth century was a period of fundamental change in all spheres of life of the Russians. „Perestroika”, the disintegration of the Soviet Union, moving away from social, economic, political and spiritual principles of social life of a bygone era, freedom of speech, ever-growing popularity of the media have all significantly accelerated the processes occurring in lexis . Today, all these processes are activated. One of them is the return to the language system of lexeme previously commonly unused, concerning the sphere of religion. Therefore, there has been the increased interest in the Bible. More and more often scholars of the contemporary Russian language refer to this rich source. The relevance of each word is always checked in practice - in everyday speech. Also in journalism the contemporary Russian language is reflected. On the pages of the Russian newspapers and magazines we find aphorisms, idioms and quotations from the Bible. Linguists use the term „biblizms” for such lexical units. For the first time in linguistics the linguists took up the issue in connection with separation of the phraseology as a scientific discipline. Biblizms add color and clarity to the journalistic texts and produce a variety of emotional connotations. But they are not always used in primary (main), but in a figurative sense.

In addition, the author describes the history of this press group in the interwar period, during the Second World War, in the communist period and after the political transition in 1989. Further, Joanna Mikosz presents a definition of music press and depicts the contempo-rary Polish press market, taking various criteria into account, such as: subject matter, type of music, the recipient, functions, the frequency of publication and circulation.

Opis:
The article presents the genealogical aspect of guidance journalism based on selected titles of Polish consumer magazines. The research material has been organised into four groups: 1) genres ‘absent’ (not present) in consumer magazines, 2) ‘non-advisory type’ genres, 3) conventional (classic) advisory-type forms, 4) multi-shaped and genealogically unsteady compositions. This article presents the last two groups. The biggest and the most heterogeneous group of publications are journalistic materials where the foreground purpose is to give advice in a problematic situation or to encourage specific preventive actions. There are specific writing styles: mini-advice, advice text, advice collage, instruction, recipe, a ‘gallery’ of inspiration, fashion show, interview, feature or a story. The advice element in each of these genres is the most important factor, determining the ‘ad hoc’ process of their composition. They are created as a response to the need for a chosen issue to be discussed in greater depth, and are also complemented by other genres in which the advice element does not play a crucial role. The varying size, the simplicity of re-writing content for infographics’ needs, as well as the presence of illustrations, help to produce texts that visually absorb readers’ interest and provide a comprehensive overview of a subject. Genres with no fixed structure are difficult to describe, because they are still at the stage of being shaped, and authorial experiment. In the printed consumer press, these are recommendations and metamorphoses. The genealogical analysis of advice publications encourages locating press advice and advisory articles at the centre of the journalistic forms of expression published within them. Their modifications create new patterns and that process prevents monotony while reading, at the same time helping the author to smoothly merge the strictness of the advisor’s recommendations with the demeanour of a kind carer. It is likely that the pragmatic character of these publications will be reflected by the readers’ positive response in regard to the stimulations and incentives offered. Complementing an advice text and a guidance article, the remaining writing forms (such as reply letters, personality profiles, features, interviews, instructions, ‘galleries’ or product placement columns), diversify the content of press magazines in terms of genres and their functions, but most of all demonstrate that journalists can creatively produce messages that contain advice, information and entertainment.
Artykuł prezentuje genologiczne ujęcie poradnikowego dziennikarstwa prasowego na podstawie wybranych tytułów polskiej prasy poradnikowej. Badane teksty zostały uporządkowane w czterech grupach: 1) gatunki „nieobecne” w prasie poradnikowej, 2) gatunki nieporadnikowe, 3) klasyczne formy poradnikowe, 4) twory wielokształtne i genologicznie nieustabilizowane. W niniejszym artykule przedstawione są dwie ostatnie grupy. Najliczniejszą i najbardziej heterogeniczną grupę publikacji tworzą materiały dziennikarskie o pierwszoplanowym celu doradzenia w sytuacji zaistnienia problemu lub zachęcenia do konkretnego postępowania profilaktycznego. Są to m.in. miniporada, porada prasowa, kolaż poradnikowy, instrukcja, przepis kulinarny, galeria inspiracji, galeria modowa, wywiad poradnikowy, reportaż poradnikowy, artykuł poradnikowy. Analiza genologiczna zawartości pism poradnikowych skłania do umiejscowienia porady prasowej oraz artykułu poradnikowego w centrum zbioru publikowanych w nich dziennikarskich form wypowiedzi.

Opis:
The article presents an internal fact-checking procedure which in the opinion of the authors is a mandatory procedure for journalists, an important and necessary stage in a journalistic routine. The good practice is that the journalists do internal fact-checking every time they publish a news piece. Based on their decision-making patterns, they select the method of fact-checking or – unfortunately – sometimes skip this stage. We called these “fact-checking logic” patterns as a part of general media logic. In this article, we present the fact-checking logic of a Polish press title published online since 2016, OKO.press, which, in the authors’ view, is an excellent example of reliable journalism practiced to the benefit of the public. Particular attention was paid to information management methods: obtaining, verifying and presenting information. Nowadays, there is enormous urgency for reliable and at the same time engaged journalism practiced to the benefit of the social and civic interest. The authors assume that, in order to speak about journalistic craftsmanship in the above categories, we need to combine the elements of both the engaged and civic journalism known from common definitions and to guard the professionalism. This is the only combination that can provide an antidote to manipulation and disinformation. The case study was of a qualitative nature, and it was preceded with research review and theoretical deliberations on the social engagement in the era of new media. The main goal is to present and analyse the activities of the oko .press journal in the context of combating disinformation spread in the media dependent on the Kremlin’s authorities.

Objective: Technological transformations have profoundly changed the journalism professions. These transformational processes have been experienced by journalists in a techno-cultural environment where their personal and collective memories were shaped. This study employs oral history as the data collection technique in order to explore the details of this techno-cultural change from the actor-network theory (ANT) perspective. Research methods: A sample of 28 senior Turkish journalists were interviewed about their experiences on the technological transformations in their professional life. The transcribed text from these narrations were qualitatively analyzed by NVivo. Results: Journalists agreed that their work was more satisfactory during their past career, and they had faced some difficulties in new forms of technical practices. They also remembered how they were able to tackle some unexpected technical problems by introducing creative inventions. They generally acknowledged the negative effects of technology on the job cuts. Cognitive value: Interviewees’ narrations display the details of the change in journalism professions.

Opis:
The journalistic part of Emile Zola’s work is often neglected by critics who usually focus on the writer’s novels and other texts of fiction. Nonetheless, these writings worth readers’ and critics’ attention because of their originality based on their hybrid character. This hybridism concerns their narrative forms, including ‘classical’ press chronicles, causeries (a kind of chat with the potential reader) and confidences of real or fictive persons. The identity of their author is also hybrid, combining some traits of a romantic, a positivist and a materialist. The outcome of such a mix of various attitudes towards the reality is a set of uncomparable texts of both anthropological and documentary value.

The article attempts to analyse the legal and ethical limitations of the freedom of speech. (1) The author concentrates on origins of the institution of censorship (ancient Rome, medieval Poland). He points out that in the Kingdom of Poland one could find rescripts, edicts and royal proclamation, which prohibited to import, sell, or read heretical books, under the threats of the confiscation of property, banishment, and even the death penalty. Then the author discusses the issue of censorship in the People’s Republic of Poland (the Law of 31 August 1981). The first part is concluded with the phenomenon of neo-censorship which is a form of self-censorship inside an editorial office toward editorial press materials. (2) The author discusses limitations of the freedom of speech by deontological norms, which are embraced by the IFJ Declaration of Principles on the Conduct of Journalists (FIJ) of 1954, the AJRP Code of Ethics of 1991, EC Resolution 1003 (1993), Media Ethics Charter of 1995, the rules of journalism ethics in Polish Television of 1996, the Journalism Code of Conduct of Polish Media Conference of 2002, the Code of Conduct in the Polish Radio of 2004, the Code of Good Practice for Press Publishers of 2005, and the AJRP Code of Ethics of 2011. (3) At the end the author discusses the ethical code for Internet users (netiquette).

Opis:
The author analyses commentaries on classical music in the Polish media. She indicates that this kind of journalism appears rarely in the broad-range press, on the radio and on television, but that it plays an important role in culture and music press. As far as the broadcast media are concerned, it appears mainly in the public media. The author analy-ses selected press titles, their genres and content. She observes that the functions of press are more and more often adopted by the Internet (the Internet fora or musical blogs). The restricted number of commentary genres is transparent in press articles, while reviews and interviews are most frequent. The authors of these texts are often inexperienced and lack appropriate education. One of the reasons of the limitations of the music commen-tary is that the articles and programmes seem interesting only to a small group of receiv-ers, and the senders are subject to conditions of the free market and conform to the most common tastes. Therefore, when analysing this issue, the receiver’s perspective seems very important. Media interest in music commentary depends on the receivers’ cultural activity, and this activity depends on the level of general education and music culture in the country. Polish music tradition is much weaker than in many other countries, such as Germany. The abandonment of musical commentary would be unfavourable, because such journalism plays many important functions, such as culture- and opinion-making functions.

This paper aims to present a theoretically-empirical reflection on the citizen-oriented model of journalism developed from the social responsibility of the media paradigm. The main indicator of that model is the significant attention paid by journalists to the current perspective of the citizens (in terms of their expectations, demands, actions), to educate citizens about their rights and obligations, as well as to encourage people to actively participate in public debate. The study was conducted under the framework of the international comparative project “Journalistic Role Performance Around the Globe”, launched and coordinated by C. Mellado and L. Hellmueller from Texas State University, USA (www.journalisticperformance.org). The results of empirical research (an analysis of the contents of four Polish daily newspapers) revealed that Polish journalism insufficiently incorporates the model of civic service, one of whose most rudimentary aims is the support, education and representation of the citizens’ interests.

Opis:
This paper attempts to legitimize and distinguish the journalistic variant of biographical writing from other functional forms, including scholarly and literary biography. The presence of the term „journalistic biography” in the professional and amateur criticism is a manifestation of the readers’ awareness of genre theory and understanding a genre as a communicational convention. This kind of perception is closely related to the phenomenon called „horizons of expectations” and the particular pact made between the author and the reader. Focusing on Angelika Kuźniak’s works, the paper shows the specific role of a reporter being the biographer and a biographer being the reporter. The analysis of Kuźniak’s biographical books (Marlene, Papusza and Stryjeńska) and reportage (Mam bardzo cienkie powieki) helps to recognize the differences between the biographical reportage and the journalistic biographical story. Following this distinction, the paper suggests that the term „journalistic biography” should be considered as a name of the group of genres and discourses related to the functional styles or, in other words, a specific transmitter–receiver situation.

The article is dedicated to interdisciplinary studies of journalistic creativity in the opinion-forming journalism of world intellectuals, forming the agenda of contemporary international journalism. The most important concepts are identified so as to complement and extend the existing theoretical works in international journalism. The academic interpretation of foreign journalistic discourse, i.e. essays, articles, interviews of journalists, diplomats, scientists, and political philosophers is conducted, opening a new perspective on the current development of journalism, and thereby contributing to solving the problems of upgrading and modernising academic courses in international journalism, which play a leading role in training experts in international journalism. The presence of how an opinion-forming journalistic component enhances new communication chains along the author–reader–protagonist line is investigated.

Opis:
The article presents the genealogical aspect of guidance journalism based on the selected titles of Polish consumer magazines. The fundamental purpose would be to compile a list of genres, taking into account their multi-variants features, which also means characterising them in respect of their structure, cognitive value, pragmatic role, and finally their style and intertextual aspect. Researched material has been organised in four groups: 1) genres ‘absent’ (not present) in consumer magazines 2) ‘not-advisory type’ genres, 3) conventional (classic) advisory-type forms, 4)multi-shaped and genealogically unsteady compositions. This article presentsthe first two groups. In magazines selected for this research do not occur the following journalistic genres: a comment, a review, a journalistic article, an essay, a feature article (also called an op-ed or a feuilleton and may be present occasionally), a report, a correspondence, press summary, a polemic and a debate. The genres not-advisory in style formally represent the field of functional writing or information journalism, rarely general public journalism (a reference, a historical timetable, a horoscope, a personality quiz, a photo coverage, a letter to the editor, an information article, a general quiz, a cultural recommendation, a feature, a profile, an interview - to mention just a few). They are usually enriched with advice element, which can take a form of a tiny suggestion or encouragement given directly, but also a form of a conclusion learned from a situation portrayed by a text’s protagonist or a situation he or she is affected by.
Badane teksty zostały uporządkowane w czterech grupach: 1) gatunki „nieobecne” w prasie poradnikowej, 2) gatunki nieporadnikowe, 3) klasyczne formy poradnikowe, 4)twory wielokształtne i genologicznie nieustabilizowane. Gatunki formalnie nieporadnikowe reprezentują obszar piśmiennictwa użytkowego bądź dziennikarskiego informacyjnego, rzadziej publicystycznego (m.in. wzmianka, kalendarium, horoskop, psychozabawa, fotorelacja, list do redakcji, artykuł informacyjny, test, rekomendacja kulturalna, reportaż, sylwetka, wywiad).

Opis:
Contemporary public debate is in general a media debate, organized by journalists working for major media companies. Journalists are not merely employees of their corporations. They, as “opinion leaders”, shape political attitudes as well as behaviors of their viewers, readers and listeners. Compounds between media and politics are multifaceted and one of them is relationship between journalists and politicians. Each party tries to infl uence the other, with various results but it certainly can be said that politicians and journalists are interdependent. However, in recent times, journalists are increasingly dependent not only from politicians but also from their employers, thus weakening their professional position. This leads to a reduction of the importance of informational function of the media for the sake of entertainment. The aim of the article is to examine political journalism in terms of relationships between interviewers (journalists) and interviewees (politicians) taking place during television interviews. The analysis is carried out mainly through the prism of actors and themes occurring in the context of the convergence of traditional and tabloid journalistic standards.

Opis:
The Article concerns the ethical dilemmas faced by political journalists. This prob-lem has been discussed in the context of the complaints which have been considered by the Council of Ethics of the Media, the decisions of the Commission of Ethics in TVP, as well as on the example of several case studies, in which some abuses of journalistic ethics are stated. The method of analysis was a content analysis. With the presented analysis of complaints and matters relating to political jour-nalists, it appears that journalists violate ethical standards: manipulate facts and images, use rumours and unverified information, affecting the personal rights and the privacy of non-executive public, do not respect the principles of objectivity and impartiality. There are, however, situations when journalists have suffered punish-ment in the form of dismissal, even though they acted in accordance with ethical principles. In conclusion, the dilemmas of political journalists can be divided into: (1) profes-sional (2) relational, (3) newsrooms, and (4) dilemmas of conscience.

Deontological and teleological types of journalism coexist and indicate the importance of philosophical and ethical basis in the work of all those who provide information in mass media. Those two important dimensions of journalism help to answer the question what the work of journalists should look like in terms of mission or profession.

Opis:
In the article „The Anode and Cathode”. The last collection of Melchior Wańkowicz’s reportages the author discusses a two-volume set of lifelong journalism by Wańkowicz, rarely commented by researchers. This series has been prepared by Thomas Jodełka-Burzecki according to the general guidelines of the author. It is one of the collections composed at the end of his life, such as From Stołpce to Cairo, By the four climates 1912-1972, and even La Fontaine’ Decanter or War and Pen. This astonishing proliferation of reportages’ selection can be explained by a presentiment of approximating death and the desire to systematize his workshop. The author believes that within the created set of cycles The Anode and Cathode is composed in a most convincing way: it is a collection of press prewar reports from the Easter borderlands of Poland, reportages from journeys undertaken both in the country and abroad, descriptions of exile and emigration during the World War II, as well as articles demonstrating the writer's concern about human values, literature (mainly: non fictional), which in total gives an image of the writer involved competently, honestly and thoroughly in the patriotic issues.

His activity in this field not only created the direction of the development of the Bulgarian press, but also was popularising Bulgarian bookcraft by giving an opportunity of publishing works to authors such as Petko Slavejkov, Jordan Hadžikonstantinov Džinot, Sava Filaretov and Konstantin Miladinov. Thanks to the activists like Ivan Bogorov Bulgarian journalism achieved fast growth and in the period of few years has been aligned with the older and developed presses in Europe, like for example Czech one.

Opis:
Communication on the local government level may take place in different ways, using different channels. One of them is the press that is either created by local governments or through their order. The authoress has attempted to show this press from the media perspective. Analysing the selected titles, she has tried to show its content both from the sender’s and the recipient’s point of view. The linking of the content and the ways of its transmission turned out to be particularly interesting, and so – the possibility of the impact on the recipient, in combination with the editorial teams’ characteristics. The local government press came into being even before the first local elections in 1990. Then it seemed that it would not play a significant role in the entire press system. Over the time, it turned out that it had been developing dynamically, increasing the number of its titles every year. It has existed up till now to the disappointment of many circles. The publishing activity of local governments usually livens up during the election. It is obvious that the existing borough leaders, mayors, starosts want to present their achievements, to show the residents that they keep their promises. A large proportion of them do it very effectively, as evidenced by the elections won in subsequent terms. In shaping their own image and the image of local governments that they lead, they are helped by the appointed press spokesmen who used to be regional or local media journalists, or the workers subordinated to cultural institutions or local governments. It might seem that most reliable success would be guaranteed by professionals – editors who have many years’ work experience. However, it appears that such a simple relationship does not exist. The analysis of the content of messages indicates the selective information to recipients about local matters, mainly about the activities of the authorities. The overall image of the district, county, province emerging from the published material is definitely positive. One should not expect another vision if the press, in its assumptions, is designed to promote the region, county and province.

The following three interviews have been analyzed in this paper: of Tomasz Lis (with Lech Wałęsa), Monika Olejnik (with Jacek Kurski) and Jacek Żakowski (with Leszek Miller). The author presents the rhetorical strategies used by the journalists and concludes that – as strategies involving the prevention of interlocutors from speaking and presenting their views, misinterpretation of information and journalists’ malevolence – they should be considered incompatible with the ethics of journalism.

The article is dedicated to aspects of a journalist’s work published between 1996–2014 in the professional monthly magazine Press, aimed at people interested in media, advertisement and public relations. These statements help other media professionals become familiar with the work experience of their colleagues, as well as help acquaint new entrants to the profession with the rules, difficulties and dilemmas associated with this work. The author classifies and defines three types of published texts: those written in an instructional form, those which approach the conventions of an informative article, and finally, copyright protected publications. An analysis of these texts leads to a conclusion that the primary aims of the publication have led its authors to focus attention on perceptions and the practical dimensions of the knowledge being shared. They use detailed descriptions, and have gradually abandoned ready solutions, encouraging readers instead to consider a range of possibilities; they also illustrate their suggestions with examples from personal experience. They do not fail to provide enlightening recollections of their own mistakes or detail the difficult beginnings of their own careers. The role models presented demand from the reader an ability to synthesize various elements. The original structure of the publication as well as its thoughtful and recollection-driven approach to the subject helps to achieve this. An awareness of the technical nature of texts urges experienced journalists to explain in plain terms the ins and outs of the profession by presenting specific events, making comparisons, and offering brief advice or warnings. This also relates to the language of expression they use, which makes even the official and hackneyed style of instructional discourse easy to understand.

The confusion between stylistics and rhetoric is widespread, not only among journalists, but also researchers who do not fully understand the scope of these two fields of linguistics. The aim of this text is to demonstrate how this confusion leads to the sense of a text being erroneously interpreted. It analyses various statements by journalists where this confusion leads to semantic misunderstandings. It thus leads not to errors, but to twisting the meaning of texts and creating a false view of reality. In conclusion, the author suggests we should learn better the differences between the two forms; only in this way can we provide the audience with accurate information.

Opis:
In 2018, we celebrated the 100th anniversary of Poland regaining its independence. The patronage over the solemn celebrations of the National Independence Day was taken by the Sejm of the Republic of Poland (lower house of the bicameral parliament). November 11, 1918 was conventionally adopted as the date of regaining independence by Poland as this date is used since. As a result of the Versailles decisions and geopolitical changes that took place after the end of World War I, Poland reappeared on the map of Europe after 123 years of partitions. The events taking place in 1918 were of great importance for the further fate of the reborn Polish state. Information on getting to know the atmosphere and spirit of the upcoming changes was published in newspapers. Representatives of the "fourth power" analyzed and commented on political and social events taking place on the international arena on an ongoing basis. At that time, the journalistic activity of Bolesław Koskowski in the pages of "Kurier Warszawski" and his active participation in the socio-political life of Warsaw deserves special attention. Opis:
The paper concerns the evolution in practicing the profession of investigative journalist over the last two centuries. The author analyzes the reformulation of investigative journalism – from individual investigations, through so-called ‘tour-guide reporting’ to the creation of I-Teams, or teams of “muckrakers.” The author refers to a number of the best known examples of such operations in both North America and Europe. Western media activities are compared with the experience of Polish editorial teams, where such a cooperation formula has operated since the first half of the 1990s. Also discussed are cases of transnational journalistic investigations over the past two decades. They exemplify the latest formula of such cooperation. In these operations many muckrakers participated – even more than a hundred reporters in the biggest investigations.
Problematyka artykułu dotyczy ewolucji uprawiania zawodu dziennikarza śledczego na przestrzeni dwóch ostatnich wieków. Autor analizuje zmianę formuły prowadzenia dochodzeń dziennikarskich – od indywidualnych śledztw, poprzez tzw. tour-guide reporting aż do powstania I-Teamów, czyli zespołów muckrakerów.

The journalistic article is present in the genealogical consciousness of journalists practitioners and scientists of humanities studies. However, the understanding of journalistic article is rather unclear. This paper presents scientific reflection on the article, understood here as one of the basic journalistic genres. All of this when bearing in mind that in the existing literature journalistic article in is not defi ned as a separate journalism species. It is rather being described by its characteristic features.

Henryk Sienkiewicz is not only a well-known Polish writer appreciated for his mastery of language but also a journalist – reviewer, reporter and columnist of Warsaw newspapers of the second half of the 19th century. The paper is devoted to the most important features of Sienkiewicz’s journalistic workshop: skilful use of informal Polish with its phraseological and idiomatic vocabulary and aphorisms. Sienkiewicz, also known by the pseudonym „Litwos”, masterly used syntactic means: for creation and gradual increase of tension, for using rhythm in statements and for exposing those meanings that cannot be expressed only by words. Rich syntactic constructions based on parallel structures emphasized with anaphora or contrast and frequent use of enumeration are his favorite ways of building sentences. The importance of contextual background of Henryk Sienkiewicz’s workshop implied by his upbringing, education and interests is also stressed in this paper.

Opis:
In today’s era, in which visual communication and multimedia dominate, a direct result of this has been the development of genres based on the visual transfer of information. The visualisation of information connects the communicative goals of a journalist with the reader’s expectations. Infographics, which combine a graphic representation of information with an understandable, dynamic and updated form of presentation is becoming a crucial form of informative discourse. This form can be an element that enriches a text, but it can also function as an autonomous journalistic genre, with its own categories and varieties. Data journalism, i.e., journalism based on figures and statistics, is very closely connected with infographics; its aim is the collecting, filtering and interpreting of data (e.g. by means of infographics). Thus, the skill of storing data is becoming very important in a journalist’s work, comparably important to interpretation and presentation. Figures, percentages and statistics are significant sources of information, as well as means of telling and creating a story. They may also be used as a source of entertainment and a means of engaging the reader; the phenomenon of “datatainment” (derived from sport), meaning the use of data for the sake of provoking a reader’s interaction, provides proof of this.

Th e multifaceted character of journalistic objectivity is historically based on diff erent philosophical underpinnings of communication, resulting in a variety of societal roles for journalists and competing notions of news. Th e article approaches journalistic objectivity in the context of Slovenian press history, which is oft en overlooked in conceptual debates on journalistic development in Europe. Th ree paradigms of journalistic objectivity within the 20th century Slovenian press are identifi ed and presented, namely (1) the utilitarian approach to journalistic objectivity in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia during the 1920s and 1930s, (2) the objectivity of self-managed journalism in Socialist Yugoslavia from the 1950s to the late 1980s, and (3) the pragmatic objectivity of high-modern journalism from the early 1990s onwards. Each concept is assessed in terms of the societal roles of journalists from monarchical to socialist to capitalist societal settings; they are then interpreted through the prism of diff erent prevailing conceptions of reality and evolving philosophical bases of understanding communication in Slovenian press history.

A distinction should be made between institutional media accountability and journalistic accountability. The latter individualizes the accountability of media organizations and enables the public to see the individual journalist (with his own ideas, sense of moral values) instead of a homogeneous mass that fits into the corporate journalistic system. This paper focuses on the possibilities accomplished by journalists’ blogs: are these new instruments of accountability that enable individual journalists to highlight their personal moral sensitivity and open their information processing practices to the public? Do Estonian journalists have enough incentives and autonomy to use weblogs as an opportunity to explain their professional decisions or even openly confront the editorial opinion? The analysis draws on 11 qualitative interviews conducted with Estonian journalists and editors. The findings indicate that the fading interest in weblogs is not the main reason why personal blogs of professional journalists would not function as accountability instruments. Journalists seldom describe attitudes that would characterize the “socially responsible existentialist.”

Different meanings of the term ‘politics’ define its different dimensions - dimensions in which politics is being carried out. The overwhelming feature of contemporary politics is its mediatisation, which can be understood as ‒ according to Franciszek Ryszka, who said that “words create politics” - the hegemony of the symbolic sphere. Therefore, the study of politics should take into account not only the sphere of decision-making, but also the discourse which restricts and directs political activities. The case of Ukraine demonstrates that civic media (i.e. Media which are decentralized, non-hierarchical, based on networking and social media) are now the plane on which certain political ideas are manifested most fully, including declarations of intent to pursue a particular doctrine of the state. At the same time - due to its axiological marking – civic media are becoming an important forum for various discourses in the service of community. The analysis of politics, perceived as power over the meaning, is the primary dimension of the analysis, since other planes of politics and corresponding analytical areas are, in the modern world, increasingly subordinated to the discursive sphere which creates a meaningful (discursive, symbolic, axiological etc.) framework for political action. The article discusses the impact of civic journalism on political change - from the “Orange Revolution” to “Revolution of Dignity”. This section of the article presents, among other issues, the most important means of civic journalist narration. The following part outlines the role of civic media at the time of Russian aggression in Ukraine, where asymmetric hybrid warfare is taking place, that is a combination of conventional, irregular and information warfare. The article also discusses the key features and activities of Ukrainian grassroots journalism during the war, and then presents the main axiological pillars of Russian war propaganda and its criticism by journalists and civic media.

The speed of information transfer, the limited forms and journalistic genres used in every day practice, inadequate professional preparation, fragmentary presentation of interviewees’ opinions, superficial journalistic research before a story is filed, and widespread access to the journalistic profession have significantly affected how the professionalism of journalists is perceived. Many journalists are inspired for this line of work, seeking sensation, or creating sensational content, which increases the number of readers, listeners or viewers as the events unfold and which contributes to an increase in the audience and in the number of readers of some titles. However, the briefness of the statements presented frequently results in journalistic material being one-sided and lacking an in-depth approach to the issue. Under such circumstances, interventionist information materials have dominated our media, limiting the readers’ opportunity to see a good documentary or read a good article. There is a shortage of teachers with real authority in journalistic circles, who are in a position to denounce abuses and demonstrate the merits of professional journalistic abilities. The aim of the paper is to indicate journalistic behaviors that raise controversies and draw attention to the dilemmas of modern journalism which diminish the value of this profession.

Several research projects in the last decade have been devoted to studying professional role perception among Polish journalists. Still less is known about how different ideals of professional roles affect journalistic role performance. This paper aims to present the findings of the content analysis of 1,130 news stories published in four Polish newspapers in 2012 and 2013. The study was a part of the international research project: Journalistic Role Performance Around the Globe (led by Prof. Claudia Mellado from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, in Chile and Lea Hellmueller, from Texas States University, www.journalisticperformance.org). The results indicate that the watchdog model is most commonly used in the Polish press, followed by the infotainment and civic models. However, the findings of the content analysis primarily support the general observation on the political orientations of the Polish newspapers and political parallelism of the Polish media system.

This article deals with the issues of educating journalists during the Franco regime in Spain and the place occupied by the School of Journalism of the Catholic Church in this system. The first years of dictatorship were characterized by a strong subordination of education and occupation to the current interests of the state, which regulated access to the profession and education only within the framework of the State School of Journalism. In the second half of the 50’s there was a gradual liberalization of the system, consisting in the gradual admission of other entities to the organization of vocational education of journalists, especially the Catholic Church. This allowed for the launch in 1960 of the School of Journalism of the Catholic Church, the functioning of which was the first manifestation of the regime’s gradual withdrawal from state supervision over the process of educating journalists. The Catholic Church School referred to the pre-war, excellent traditions of the journalism school organized by the Catholic daily El Debate, becoming a kind of counterweight to the regime’s State School of Journalism. The competition between schools (although still slight at that time) contributed to an increase in the quality of education. The emphasis on the completion of general education or the design of curricula taking into account the development of information technology made it possible to equip students with competences required in the labour market, which previously could only be obtained to a greater or lesser extent in practice.

The purpose of this article was to examine if both types of social associations, as proposed by Michael Oakeshott, had been present in the chosen publications of Polityka weekly magazine. First the main characteristics of journalist messages were described. An important part of these characteristics applies to relations between journalists and politicians and between journalists and the idea of common good. On this basis four different concepts of journalism were distinguished. The analysis revealed that both types of associations could be identified in the journalists’ messages, and that the differences between these associations were significant.

In anthropology, we talk about two methods of cognition – emic and etic. In my article, I consider the opportunities and limitations of this conception in relation with press journalism by substituting genology for a search of the subject’s experience.

The text focuses on the analysis of the programme, which is categorised by the editorial team as “political journalism”. The author is trying to show her doubts regarding the lack of connection between the definition of the word ‘politics’ and anything that appears in media’s offer in such category. She points out how the broadcasters nurture in the audience the belief that the viewed programme deals with political problems and the issues of public area which are important for conscious citizens. Among the set of tools and means used throughout the programme, she highlights the following: usage of concealing type indicators, activation of keywords included in semantic fields derived from the noun ‘politics’; moving the focus from the public area to the private one; staging antagonistic scenes and critical situations. The presented tendencies to stage the reality fit into the mechanism of ‘seducing with politics’, using the citizen sphere as a pretext for focusing first and foremost on emotions, assumptions and controversies.

Opis:
Omówiono dwa wyznaczniki wewnętrzne stylu dziennikarskiego – płynność gatunkową i swobodę stylistyczną. Obie cechy wskazują na wyjątkowość kronikarskiego pióra Aleksandra Głowackiego. Charakterystyczne elementy idiostylu zaczerpnięte zostały z 16 tekstów różnej długości, które łączy wspólny temat: park miejski w centrum miasta – Ogród Saski. Analizie poddane zostały m.in. takie środki stylistyczne, jak peryfraza, metafora, metonimia, neologizmy czy paralelizmy składniowe.
The journalistic output of Bolesław Prus is so vast that it requires adetailed analysis. Therefore, the present article is not acomprehensive study of the writing technique of the Warsaw chroni-cler, and neither is it afull presentation of his journalistic idiostyle; instead, it is supposed to depict the most typical features of his style. Two indicators of his journalistic internal style – the genre fluency and stylistic easiness – have been discussed at length; both features indicate an exceptional character of the style of Aleksander Głowacki. The characteristic elements of his idiostyle have been taken from 16 texts of different lengths, which are joined by the common topic, the Ogród Saski, apublic garden in central Warsaw.

Opis:
The literary heritage of Bolesław Prus has been the subject of numerous publications, especially concerning the language, which remains the article author’s main focus. However, researchers have primarily concentrated on his literary fiction works – the novels, short stories, and novellas. The remarkably rich collection of the journalistic writings of Prus has been so far of marginal interest. This article introduces the reader to this great literary phenomenon – it provides the dates of the author’s collaboration with the editorial offices, press titles where he published his works, and describes his publishing cycles. It offers a current list of linguistic works devoted to the idiolect of Prus. It also addresses a set of problems and delineates the research tasks which are worth undertaking in order to perform a thorough and complex analysis of the language of Prus as a journalist.

The article attempts to decide whether sports reports are more about news or commentary. Based on an analysis of press material, the author examines various characteristics of the genre and tries to determine their compatibility with the news canon. As the analysis shows, contemporary sports reports are less about news and more about commentary, interpretation or evaluation. Journalists tend to sum up the contest and briefly describe the course of events. This makes sports reports similar to press comment and review.

This year we are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Polish-Bolshevik war and the outbreak of the Second Silesian Uprising. Among results of the Versailles decisions a one redraw Poland on the map of Europe and the country was reborn after 123 years of partitions. These events had a huge impact on the further fate of the reborn Polish state. In the first years after Poland regained independence, the political and military authorities in the country focused on consolidating the pre-partition territories. Also the press played a significant role in this task. In the twenties, journalism was the primary source of knowledge about the surrounding world. Journalists played an important mission in promotion of the fighting spirit and shaping patriotic awareness in the lands of the former partitioning powers. Editorial point of view often strongly influenced the public opinion, becoming an effective weapon in the fight to strengthen the independence move. The journalistic activity of Bolesław Koskowski in the pages of "Kurier Warszawski" fits in a special way and deserves attention. In his numerous articles, we can find confirmation that Warsaw was not indifferent to the struggle to join Upper Silesia to the Motherland.

According to professional statutes, combining work of journalist and PR-specialist is not permitted. However the problem exists. The paper focuses on the relations between journalism and public relations. It presents the results of research conducted among students of journalism. Above all, students were asked whether they think working as a journalist and a PR-person is possible and ethical.

In recent years, due to the rise of cultural productions through different media, an increase in the number of journalistic publications of hybrid texts has been observed, which results from the fusion of the narrative and informative functions. The spaces traditionally devoted to different types of journalistic texts which – apart from those merely informative, may include cultural-related and opinion articles – make possible the appearance of articles which distinguish themselves trough entailing both characteristics. Therefore, this paper analyses two articles written by J. Carrion and published in the Spanish edition of The New York Times in 2018. The articles will be scrutinised in relation to the narrative and essayistic works of the author. We illustrate some characteristics of what is generally referred to as narrative journalism, as defined by Herrscher (2012) and Casals Carro (2005), among others. This will allow us to trace a profile of the author, journalist and writer which is linked to the social environment and of his work.

Opis:
Alceo Valcini was the Warsaw-based correspondent for the Italian daily “Corriere della Sera” during the years 1933-1946. Valcini encountered great difficulties with the editor-in-chief of the newspaper, Aldo Borelli, who was not interested in following the political life of Poland except for Poland’s clashes with the Soviet Union. Valcini managed to publish his articles as long as they stressed the influence of Mussolini’s fascism on Polish political life or if they dealt with Soviet political interference in Central Europe. Valcini was to be replaced by another journalist as correspondent from Warsaw because of his own pro-Polish views and scarce enthusiasm for the aggressive stances of Nazi Germany towards Czechoslovakia and Poland, but he nevertheless managed to witness Hitler’s aggression against Poland. His stories were the first accounts of German persecution of the Polish Jews and Warsaw’s civil population, although they had no chance of publication on the pages of the increasingly pro-Nazi “Corriere della Sera”. Valcini took notice of everything that happened in Poland between the outbreak of the war and the end of July 1944. In 1945, Valcini collected his memoirs in a publication entitled The Calvary of Warsaw, in which he gave a graphic account of life in the city under German occupation. Valcini witnessed to the uprising in the Jewish Ghetto and to the activities of the Polish Secret State. His book was translated into Polish in 1970, after having undergone heavy editing, possibly as a result of intervention by the Communist censors. In any event, Valcini turned out to be one of the very few Italian journalists who – in writing about World War II and the Nazi occupation of Poland – did not fall prey to Goebbel’s Propagandaministerium, unlike the much more celebrated reporter Indro Montanelli.

Opis:
Studies on the ideas of the Reverend Józef Tischner seen from the angle of the press, radio and television show clearly that he was a public figure, especially in the 1990s. For many people – including journalists – Tischner appeared to be an authority who could raise different subjects, often controversial, and at the same time engage listeners or the audience with his speech. The significant reason for Tischner’s popularity was also the way he communicated. This article aims at showing the rev. Tischner as a public figure. The article has been based on the doctoral dissertation titled The Reverend Józef Tischner in the Polish mass media (1955–2000). Political and media studies. The dissertation was recognized in 2012 by the „Media Studies” Editorial team during the competition in doctoral dissertation on media studies

Datafication brings with it the challenges for journalists to fulfill their historical role as mediators of social processes to their audiences. Journalism has been a rather humanistic field, where journalists tell stories, but do not deal with the analysis and interpretation of numbers. For the current study a methodological tool was developed to measure data literacy among journalists in Estonia. The study confirms that data literacy is acknowledged by journalists as a requirement of future journalism, but their actual skills are still low. Journalists feel more comfortable with data presented in familiar forms. There is a strong tendency that data literacy develops when the skills needed for data processing are in actual use.

After the political transformation, Hungarian journalism organizations and media policy makers attempted to introduce the standards and practices of neutrality-seeking journalism, yet most news outlets continued to other engaged accounts of political events and issues. Why was the professionalization of journalism interrupted? This paper attempts to answer this question by offering an overview of the comparative media systems literature in search of the factors shaping journalism practices and by placing Hungary on the map of media systems. Then it suggests that different audience needs may be an additional factor explaining the dominance of different journalism practices in different media systems, with the public in transition societies seeking confirmation rather than information when using the media.

Six years after the so-called ‘refugee crisis’ in 2015, the European Union remains divided on questions of migration and asylum policy. The issue also remains high on the agendas of the USA and Russia, two other key destination countries with immigration from Latin America and the Post-Soviet space. This article presents results from a comparative study of news coverage in 17 countries, focusing on 10 EU member states in Western and Central Eastern Europe (CEE), the USA and Russia. The intensity of coverage was remarkably different, with Hungary’s and Germany’s media standing out while Russian media displayed relatively low levels of coverage. Individual migrants and refugees were most visible in the two outlets from the USA. Media in CEE countries tended towards a more critical approach than media in Western Europe. However, differences between most countries’ pairs of analyzed media outlets indicate a more pluralistic debate than frequently assumed.

The purpose of this article is to present crowdfunding campaigns, not only as an alternative option for financing a project, but also as a promotional tool. Researchers point out that one of the elements of a successful campaign is the use of storytelling to support the realization of the persuasive function of the message. Giving the structure of the story a pragmatic dimension, allows it to be analyzed from the perspective of rhetoric, and consider the structure itself in the category of rhetorical topos. The example chosen for analysis is the campaign of Tortoisemedia.com, which proved to be a huge crowdfunding success and continues to grow its business. The implementation of the collection proved that the public wants to fund journalistic projects of value to them.

The work also aims to investigate whether similar mechanisms can be used in the coverage of elections as in the coverage of wars. We explore through what perspective – peace or war journalism – the election was covered and what specific mechanisms of these models were used. We also discuss whether the war journalism or peace journalism coverage perspective of the event was influenced by polarization and the political affiliation of the Polish media and how these factors influenced the way the US presidential candidates were presented.

The aim of this Special Issue of Central European Political Studies is to bring media scholars together and to reflect on the current trends in political journalism in our region. The focus of the articles is trained on the discovery of the shifts and continuities in journalistic practises 25 years after the collapse of the communist regimes. Some of the findings and conclusions presented in the volume come from studies conducted within the framework of international comparative research projects such as Worlds of Journalism, Journalistic Role Performance Around the Globe, or Media Accountability and Transparency in Europe (MediaAcT). The others come from single, national empirical studies or analyses on the media systems conducted in the Central and Eastern countries.

Opis:
An attempt at reconstruction of the New Journalism model results from the observation of the crisis symptoms of journalism as a profession and mission (social responsibility). On the grounds of journalists’ and theoreticians’ statements, it is possible to establish a hierarchy of values of the serious journalism, which a social demand is growing for. The New Journalism is most frequently described as the conscious journalism, which provides spectrum of needs and views of recipients. This type of journalism is committed, independent, functioning in the public sphere, credible, realizing educational role. These attributes pertain to journalism. The paper includes standpoints, for example, of S. Michalczyk, B. Hennessy, P. Mancini, S. Russ–Mohl, S. Bratkowski, R. Kapuściński.

The text is focused on the characteristics of news in daily TV programmes, such as the news or broadcasts on round-the-clock television (e.g. TVN 24). The author proposes a definition of news and tries to approach its intrinsic features in the Polish conditions, illustrating the discussion with examples. A full description on news (considering such problems as content and the most important characteristics) enables the systematisation of an event and an analysis of news in the Polish mass media.

Opis:
Media convergence and multimediality of message brought about a situation where journalists and editors of the content posted on the Internet are more and more frequently required to acquire the skills which have never been necessary for them before. It often forces them to become acquainted with professional software and information technology. On the other hand, availability of different databases and Internet applications provides journalists with possibilities of gathering, processing and visualization of data unheard of to date. The objective of the paper was a comparative analysis of selected Web applications generating interactive maps, data charts and diagrams, that may be useful in journalist’s everyday work, in the browser in an automatic way. The conducted research allows concluding that the tested applications may be applied in Internet, citizen or data journalism, that is wherever the concise and attractive form of data visualization is of primary importance.

The objective of this study is to conduct a stylistic analysis of the synopses publicized in the end-of-the-year ranking list of 2017 scientific “breakthroughs” from Science Magazine. The article provides a review of literature on science popularization (also known as science accommodation) and presents the typology of news values and rationalization cues that are used by editors to make science-related coverage both newsworthy and credible at the same time. The article lists the possible ways in which scientific findings can be stylistically constructed as “breakthroughs”. The analysis consists in quantifying and illustrating the typical stylistic maneuvers for framing selected science-related issues as “breakthroughs.” The article concludes with the implications of such constructions for the public understanding of science.
