The goal of this article is to present the critical reception of the biography and works of Joseph Conrad in Poland in 1897–1945. Special emphasis is put on the political, social, cultural and aesthetic factors conditioning this process. The reception originated in the era of partitions, whereas Conrad’s relative popularity among the intellectual and artistic elite started only in the interwar period. A special role in promotion of Conrad was played by Stefan Żeromski and the poets associated with the “Skamander” group. In later years, Conrad became the object of fascination of many representatives of the generation of 1910, who were highly infl uenced by Józef Ujejski, author of the monograph O Konradzie Korzeniowskim [On Konrad Korzeniowski]. Conrad’s works played a special role during World War II – they provided moral support to many people struggling against the Nazi and Stalinist

Joseph Conrad’s narratives featuring Marlow are composed as stories within stories, in which Marlow (the intradiegetic narrator) tells stories to his few listeners (the intradiegetic addresses). Critics have found analogies of these narratives with the Polish gawęda tradition and the English sailor’s yarn, both related to oral story-telling. This paper sets out to look at one literary device — alliteration — found in early works narrated by Marlow (Youth, Heart of Darkness, and Lord Jim), and to indicate that various effects achieved by alliterative phrases (onomatopoeic, emphatic, rhythmical, and autotelic) all contribute to this narrator’s status as an oral performer.

The paper sets out to analyse Conrad’s novella A Smile of Fortune and its narrator-protagonist’s crisis of identity in terms of the Jungian concept of individuation. The dynamic process of constructing the narrative identity, as defined by Ricoeur, finds its psychological equivalent in the concept of individuation which involves recognizing and assimilating the opposites that reside within the unconscious and aims at transforming the psyche into the Self or coincidentia oppositorum. The paper focuses on the narrator’s interaction with Jacobus and Alice as the stages of the individuation process which include a confrontation with the shadow and the anima, the archetypes of the unconscious.

This article examines the trends in Bulgarian critical appraisals of Conrad’s writing and the transformations they have undergone over the last hundred years. Though few in number, these appraisals are nevertheless profound and perceptive, keeping in focus the most essential messages of Conrad’s works, as well as the facts of the author’s remarkable life. The scope of these critical endeavours has long been of a rather limited nature, but in some of the articles there has definitely been a noticeable trend towards a monographic approach. The growing fascination with Conrad in Bulgaria became particularly evident during the celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of the writer’s birth. The Polish Institute in Sofia contributed significantly to this event, organizing university lectures and film projections – not only in the capital, but also in other parts of the country. In addition, the Warsaw 150th anniversary exhibition entitled “Twixt land and sea” was invited to Sofia (the co-author of the present article being one of those who took part in the opening ceremony). This heightened interest in Conrad – the man and the writer – is partly the result of current trends towards intensive cultural interaction and also a growing fascination with migrant writers coming from multicultural backgrounds. It may well be that these recent developments have contributed to the publication of two monographs on Conrad: Stefana Roussenova’s comparative study entitled Dialogues in Exile: Joseph Conrad, Vladimir Nabokov, Eva Hoffman (2010) – which addresses the problems of exile and migration in some of Conrad’s works – and Margreta Grigorova’s monograph entitled Joseph Conrad – the Creator as Seafarer (2011), which not only reviews the seminal achievements that have contributed to the expansion of Conrad studies in Bulgaria, but also builds on them and takes them to completion.

The translation of dialect and jargon undoubtedly presents translators with a challenge. Approaches to translating dialect have evolved from the simplistic assertion that dialect in the source language ought to be replaced with dialect in the target language to the more nuanced strategies of neutralization, lexicalization, Pidginization or even the ad hoc creation of an artificial dialect. Peter Newmark claims that the crucial factor in translating non-standard speech is the identifi cation of its functions in the original. Once the functions have been recognized, they can be “recreated in target language texts by drawing on appropriate varieties”. However, in Translation Studies there is also a completely different view. Jeremy Munday notes that “The norm for translating dialect, slang and social variation tends to be that of the ‘homogenizing convention’. This involves replacing non-standard forms in the source language with standard forms typical of the written language in the target version”. Translators can therefore apply several different techniques to match the non-standard heterogeneity of the original in the target text. In Joseph Conrad’s short story entitled Typhoon we come across two different varieties of non-standard English. The first is Pidgin, which is a reduced language that results from extended contact between groups which have no language in common; it evolves when these groups need some means of verbal communication. The other kind of nonstandard English is sailors’ jargon.

The present paper seeks to analyse the development of the translation series of Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness with emphasis on domesticating and modernising tendencies. To this end, two translations into Polish are compared: Aniela Zagórska’s version published in 1930 and Ireneusz Socha’s modern translation of 2004. Various levels at which domesticating and modernising tendencies can be noticed are considered. It seems that, contrary to current tendencies to foreignize translated texts, the modern version of Heart of Darkness, at least at the linguistic level, may be labelled as the domesticated one in comparison with the earlier translation. Generally, Zagórska tries to reproduce Conrad’s wording in Polish; whereas Socha’s aim, or skopos, seems to be creating the text that reads naturally. The paper shows in what ways the translators’ choices of particular translating strategies and procedures accentuate the deforming tendencies, as defined by Antoine Berman.

This is the second volume in the series Joseph Conrad a Polska, Europa Środkowo-Wschodnia i świat [Joseph Conrad and Poland, Central and Eastern Europe and the world], is part of the research activities carried out by the Conrad Research Department at the UMCS. The monograph, like its predecessor, is a selection of texts previously published in English in the 22 volumes of the series Conrad: Eastern and Western Perspectives. The review highlights the qualities of the publication, which presents works by leading Polish and foreign Conrad experts. In addition to popularizing the author, it also is an attempt to recover Conrad, who is almost absent in the Polish education.
Tekst jest omówieniem publikacji Wydawnictwa UMCS Polskość i europejskość w Josepha Conrada wizjach historii, polityki i etyki pod redakcją Wiesława Krajki. Jest to drugi tom serii Joseph Conrad a Polska, Europa Środkowo-Wschodnia i świat, stanowi część działań naukowych prowadzonych przez Zakład Badań Conradoznawczych UMCS. Monografia, podobnie jak poprzedniczka, jest wyborem tekstów opublikowanych wcześniej w języku angielskim w 22 tomach serii Conrad: Eastern and Western Perspectives. Recenzja zwraca uwagę na walory tego wydawnictwa, które zawiera badania czołowych polskich i zagranicznych conradystów. Prócz tego pełni funkcję popularyzatorską, jest swoistym odzyskiwaniem Conrada, autora niemal nieobecnego w polskiej edukacji.

The article concerns the reception of Marcel Proust’s novels by Anna Iwaszkiewiczowa (1897–1979) — an excellent expert in literature, music and painting, polyglot, erudite, humanist with a predilection for the exact sciences. She was the first translator of, In Search of Lost Time into Polish; the excerpts she translated testify not only to her outstanding talents at translation, but also to her reading insight and a kind of closeness to Proust’s writing and thought. Iwaszkiewiczowa also translated important critical articles by foreign authors to familiarize Polish readers with European proustological discussions. In addition, she devoted a lot of attention to the French author in her private journals, but above all, she creates her own, inspiring interpretations of Proust’s work in literary essays. The juxtaposition of the writings of Marcel Proust and Joseph Conrad turns out to be particularly interesting and fresh, though surprising at first. This article analyzes these texts, presenting them in the context of contemporary aesthetic, philosophical and even physical concepts (including Witkacy’s “pure form”, Rudolf Otto’s “numinosum”, Hermann Minkowski’s “space-time”), to which Iwaszkiewiczowa referred directly or indirectly. Parallel reading of both types of her considerations — those scattered in dailies, where she noted private impressions, as well as those announced in the form of carefully prepared articles — brings an interesting and unique image of Proust and of Iwaszkiewicz herself. The article is an attempt to give the floor to Anna Iwaszkiewicz, who is commonly perceived as the wife of a well-known writer. The author of the article argues that the figure and creative output of Anna Iwaszkiewiczowa are worth careful reading and research analysis, and above all, a reminder.

In this essay I attempt to analyse Joseph Conrad’s ‘autobiography’ - as it is presented in Some Reminiscences - with particular reference to the enduring cultural patterns that it exhibits. According to the configurationist or “culture and personality” approach elaborated by American anthropologists such as Ruth Benedict and Ralph Linton, patterns of behaviour transmitted within particular cultural groups permanently configure the personality model of its members both at the level of everyday behaviour and at the level of ideal patterns. This is confi rmed by an analysis of Conrad’s autobiography, in which the writer draws on the ideal patterns of the culture of the Polish eastern borderlands (which he acquired during the process of socialization) - not only in order to analyse his own personality, but also to govern his behaviour in completely different cultural contexts. Even more interestingly, these behavioural patterns have confi gured the particular model of the world that is reflected in the very structure of Conrad’s works. In this connection the influence of the gawęda or ‘Polish nobleman’s tale’ would seem to be indisputable. It is not so much that Conrad alludes to this literary convention in his autobiographical reminiscences, but rather that he uses it to re-create the model (based on cultural patterns) of the imagination of a Polish nobleman from the eastern borderlands. Moreover, this culturally determined writing strategy is used in Conrad’s other works.

The paper examines various aspects of magic, ghosts and voices in selected works by Joseph Conrad who repeatedly drew on some unnatural occurrences, though they were frequently depreciated by the author himself. In his artistic output Conrad created many such complex figures that may pose a challenge in an interpretative process. Thus, the goal of this paper is to explore the functions of magical and spectral manifestations in Conrad’s writing in order to show certain tendencies that can be discerned while studying the subject matter. As a result of the given analysis it is possible to notice similarities and differences between manifestations of the supernatural presented in Conrad’s texts as well as to propose a classification of these phenomena, which reflects the multidimensional nature of Conrad’s artistic style.
Niniejszy artykuł bada istotę magii, duchów i głosów w wybranych utworach Josepha Conrada, który niejednokrotnie czerpie inspiracje z nadnaturalnych zdarzeń – motywu często deprecjonowanego przez samego pisarza. W swoim dorobku artystycznym angielski autor  stworzył wiele złożonych osobliwości będących wyzwaniem w procesie interpretacji. Dlatego też główny cel artykułu sprowadza się do przedstawienia funkcji magii i zjaw w tekstach Conrada oraz  zobrazowania konkretnych tendencji i zależności w odniesieniu do  przedmiotu badań. Analiza umożliwia ukazanie podobieństw i różnic między różnorodnymi formami magii i istotami spirytualnymi  zaprezentowanymi w poszczególnych tekstach, jak również zarysowanie klasyfikacji omówionych zjawisk, które odzwierciedlają wielowymiarowy charakter artystycznego stylu Conrada.

In Joseph Conrad’s novel Under Western Eyes (1911), Razumov is a kinless university student in St. Petersburg who involuntarily becomes the government’s agent as regard to espionage because of an unwelcome visit from the revolutionist student Haldin. This paper makes use of C.T. Watts’ article “Under Western Eyes: The Haunted Haunts” published in 2008 as a framework to investigate Razumov’s psychological journey: beginning with his decision to betray Haldin through to the consequential action of making a confession to the latter’s sister, Nathalie. Watts’ article explores both the haunting and exorcist aspects of the novel upon its author, characters and, possibly. the reader. The article primarily focuses on how Conrad’s novel intentionally mimics Crime and Punishment (1866). Several aspects of the narrative reveal to us that Conrad failed in avenging the haunting effect Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s work had upon him. In this paper, the rationale behind Razumov’s confession will be investigated in understanding how both physical and mental exhaustion stimulate moral struggles and alter one’s assumed ideology. Emphasis will be made on the transformation of Razumov in terms of the effect of acquiring domestic connections and arriving in different geographical locations as the plot complicates.

The axis of "The Shadow-Line" by Joseph Conrad is the issue of initiation in the seaman craft and, at the same time crossing the threshold of adulthood. The author of the article, referring to the concept of the rites of passage of van Gennep, Turner and Eliade, as well as the model of Campbell’s mythic “hero’s journey”, analyses the process and anthropological implications of this initiation and considers to what extent the rites de passage are universal, and to what extent they are contextual. The ship crew turns out to be a communitas, a community of the liminal phase of the rite of passage, and the protagonist must realize the model-archetype in concrete circumstances. Even though the plot resembles the structure of a magical tale, one may find there the cultural reality of seamen’s work and the Victorian era.
