The subject of this article is an analysis of the novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) by James Joyce from a perspective of artistic space. The presented work depicts the inner and outer space of the hero’s home and house, considering the effect of the most important events of his life. It attempts to portray the changes in the relationship between the protagonist and the components of his home and house: the building, the roots, the family, to make clear why in the end he remains homeless and alone.

Although Mikhail Bakhtin never used the term intertextuality in any of his writings, the dialogic concept that every utterance echoes other utterances and, analogously, every text also echoes other texts, provided the basis for Kristeva’s (1966) theory of intertextuality and has proved to be of fundamental importance for the study of literature ever since. The presence of intertextual elements in a literary text (such as citations of and allusions to other literary works) always represents a challenge to the translator. In this article we explore different types of intertextuality in James Joyce’s Ulysses. During our analysis, we describe how the source text, the first Italian translation, and no less than six subsequent retranslations interact with one another from a dialogic perspective, in the presence of such elements. Because of the abundance of intertextuality, stylistic and linguistic variety, and multivoicedness, Joyce’s masterpiece is a well-known example of apolyphonic novel. While analyzing dialogic interactions taking place within the “macrotext” constituted by the 36 source text and its Italian (re)translations, we therefore also discuss the effects generated by the way in which intertextuality is rendered in (re)translation. The specific ways in which translations recreate the original’s multivoicedness orient the dialogic experience of the recipients of the (re)translations.

The article focuses on the reception of literary works by James Arthur Baldwin (1924-1987) in the West and in Russia. This classic of American literature showed himself to contemporary readers not only as a gifted prose writer, playwright and feature writer, but also as a radical social activist committed to the fight against American racism. The book Giovanni ’s Room, ranking among the golden hundred of the world literature of the second half of the 20th century, is regarded as the first American novel featuring homosexual love and an important voice in the fight against homophobia. Henry James was not a sentimental writer. However, in his later books we can find traces of repressed emotions and melancholy. One of the most intriguing literary documents showing the nostalgic strain in James is his collection The American Scene (1907), a record of the novelist’s return to the USA after a twenty-years-old absence. It contains various manifestations of James’s nostalgia – for example, his memories of New York and his melancholic recollections of the places connected with his youth. Also, it shows James’s convoluted rhetoric of memory as a space of repression and displacement as well as his unwillingness to address these issues in a direct fashion.

In the article, we exemplify an individualized approach to lexical semantics, where an individual’s use of words is given priority over abstracted and all-embracing dictionary-like definitions. Thus, as identified in Dubliners, the senses of woman are presented as reflections of Joyce’s conceptualizations derived from his own life experience, both personal and cultural. These conceptualizatons may resemble some of the dictionary models/definitions of woman of the relevant (Victorian) period, but, on the whole, they are highly individualized and contextspecific. In our analysis, Joyce’s woman shows in Dubliners six main broad senses, all of which share the element ‘a female person of a status lower than that of a male person.’
W artykule zaprezentowano metodologiczną zasadność i konieczność zastosowania takiej analizy leksykalno-semantycznej, w której za podstawę przyjmuje się nie wyabstrahowane ponad- i pozakontekstowe definicje słownikowe, ale sposób, w jaki znaczenia kreuje dany (jednostkowy) użytkownik języka w faktycznych zdarzeniach mownych. Na podstawie opowiadań Jamesa Joyce’a ze zbioru Dublińczycy prześledzono niuanse semantyczne słowa woman ‘kobieta’, przyjmując, że w każdym wypadku są to wyrazy doświadczeniowych konceptualizacji samego Joyce’a, tych o podłożu wspólnotowym i tych jednostkowych. Chociaż niektóre ze stwierdzonych konceptualizacji przypominają wyidealizowane definicje, jakie leksemowi woman przypisują dla angielszczyzny okresu wiktoriańskiego słowniki, to dla pełnego zrozumienia woman w Dublińczykach należy uwzględnić wiele epizodów z życia Joyce’a oraz charakterystykę społeczno-kulturową jego czasów.
