    While commercial images of “backpacking” emphasise adventure, youth and sightseeing, recent ethnographies of backpackers identify other motivations and rationales that accentuate travel experiences as formative of the self and identity. This raises the question of the basis of this apparently common orientation. This paper investigates, through analysis of postings on an electronic backpacker notice board, “backpacker” as a collaboratively constructed category. We propose that the shared understandings of “backpacker” enabled by these notice boards are consistent with cultural orientations captured in notions of cosmopolitanism (Beck 2000) involving a shift to new forms of sociality across borders: a solidarity with strangers.

    In this article, we extend Benedict Anderson’s notion of imagined communities to examine the idea of an “imagined engagement” between or among people and groups that have not met. These imagined engagements include a blurring of temporal lines, as one group “interacts” with another’s past, present, or future. Imagined engagements are a form of failed interaction, and, as such, have their place in Goffman’s interaction order. We argue that musical language can comprise a meeting point of these engagements. We then demonstrate how two composers-one historic and one contemporary-have used the musical cultures of an Othered people, with a focus on Indigenous America, in an attempt to create a sense of community and common ties between the West and these Others-a sense of community in which the Othered have no part.

    In recent decades, sociologists have too often ignored the group level-the meso-level of analysis-in their emphasis on either the individual or the institution. This unfortunate absence misses much of what is central to a sociological analysis of community based on “action.” I draw upon Erving Goffman’s (1983) concept of the interaction order as I argue that a rigorous political sociology requires a focus on group cultures and tiny publics. Group dynamics, idiocultures, and interaction routines are central in creating social order. This approach to civic life draws from the pragmatism of John Dewey, as well as the broad tradition of symbolic interactionist theorists. Ultimately, I argue that a commitment to local action constitutes a commitment to a more extended social system.

    Seeing sociology visually adds a sense of realness to the viewer compared to only reading sociological texts. In this paper, I aim to provide an example of how a single scene from a feature film can be utilized as a practical and meaningful means to analyze a social situation and to help students of sociology to grasp key features of Goffman’s theory of interaction order. More precisely, the main aims of the paper are 1) to illustrate Goffman’s theory of the interaction order by identifying acts of disruption and alignment in interaction through a film clip; and 2) to attempt to analyze, in a Goffmanian sense, what is really going on in the situational interaction. The scene is from the 2013 American movie August: Osage County and follows a dinner of immediate family in the wake of the funeral of the hostess’s late husband. The normative and civilized interaction of the meal is, however, jeopardized by the hostile and provocative mood of the hostess, as she repeatedly disrupts the interaction order with attempts to mock and/or uncover the hidden and vulnerable truths of the immediate members of her family, exemplifying her power status in the particular situation. The dinner guests, however, try to overlook and resist the provocation of the hostess and stick to their predetermined roles to save and sustain their idealized selves (their faces) and the interaction order (the faces of others), In doing so they, on the one hand, discard the uncomfortable truths acclaimed by the hostess and, on the other, explain the hostess’s provocative actions in terms of their claim that she is unwell and in need of medical attention. Thus, the attacked dinner guests in the scene align more alliance to the interaction order than to truth itself.

    This article is based on a study in which the interactions in a sports club between persons with physical disabilities and their non-disabled colleagues were observed. The purpose of the study was to understand and describe the problems faced by sports participants with disabilities when operating within a social, organizational, and physical environment that was not designed for the disabled. The study made it possible to reconstruct how definitions of key notions and situations are developed as a basis for creating and maintaining the interaction order between disabled and non-disabled sports participants. The study used data compiled from open observation of participants and semi-structured interviews. The phenomena were analyzed in accordance with the procedures of Grounded Theory. Symbolic interactionism was used as a theoretical framework in the interpretative paradigm.

    The results of social-and-economic order analysis in the context of formation and representing organizational interaction between managing subjects of production management are considered in the article. It was proved that social-and-economic order, as a type of social order, is acting as the determinative prerequisite of formation efficient organizational interaction in any system of present-day management. It was well-grounded that social-and-economic order of organizational interactions is caused by economic requirements and economic interests of production subjects has a relevant legal content, and its determinative element stands for ordering ownership relations, i.e., order between people as far as owning and managing means of production are concerned. The author’s models of representing organizational interaction in the systems of production management depending on forms and methods of division relations of ownership for means of production are presented in the article.

    Celem artykułu jest zrekonstruowanie wkładu, jaki ogólna teoria systemów społecznych sformułowana przez Niklasa Luhmanna wniosła na rzecz integracji różnorodności badań społecznych. W tym kontekście teoria ta przyniosła metodologicznie rezultaty, dostarczając podstaw dla ukierunkowania badań społecznych, zapewniając tym samym znaczący stopień spójności w ich rozwoju. Ma to znaczenie szczególnie w kontekście coraz bardziej zróżnicowanych i wyspecjalizowanych koncepcji w naukach społecznych, w których ryzyko rozłączenia, izolacji i rozproszenia stało się coraz bardziej widoczne. Luhmann definiuje system nie przez rozróżnienie między elementem a relacją, jak to się dzieje w ujęciach tradycyjnych, lecz przez różnicę między systemem a jego otoczeniem, co stanowi w ogóle warunek istnienia systemów, w tym systemów społecznych. Punktem wyjścia każdej teoretyczno-systemowej analizy jest różnica (dyferencja) między systemem a otoczeniem. Systemy są zorientowane strukturalnie na swoje otoczenie i bez otoczenia nie mogą trwać. Konstytuują się i utrzymują przez wytwarzanie i podtrzymywanie dyferencji wobec otoczenia. Bez dyferencji wobec otoczenia nie byłoby nawet autoreferencji.
    The purpose of this article is to reconstruct the contribution that the general theory of social systems formulated by Niklas Luhmann has made to the integration of the diversity of social research. In this context, the theory has yielded methodological results, providing a basis for the orientation of social research, thus ensuring a significant degree of consistency in its development. This is especially significant in the context of increasingly diverse and specialized approaches in the social sciences, where the risk of disconnection, isolation and dispersion has become increasingly apparent. Luhmann defines a system not by the distinction between an element and a relation, as in traditional approaches, but by the difference between a system and its environment, which is the condition for the existence of systems in general, including social systems. The starting point of any system-theoretical analysis is the difference (differentiation) between the system and its environment. Systems are structurally oriented to their environment and without their environment they cannot last. They constitute and maintain themselves by producing and sustaining differentials to the environment. Without differentiation toward the environment, there would not even be self-reference.

    W artykule dokonano analizy interakcji – niezwykle złożonej i bezprecedensowej – niematerialnej (kulturowej) na historycznym Szlaku Jedwabnym. Ta właśnie płaszczyzna interakcji inspiruje również współczesne działania związane z Inicjatywą Pasa i Szlaku. Szczególnie ważny dla autora jest fakt, iż mechanizm ekonomiczny, będący siłą napędową historycznego Szlaku, stał się zaproponowaną – niejako alternatywną dla historii tradycyjnej – ścieżką rozwoju ludzkości, w której tradycja, wynikająca z kultu przemocy, stanowiła w istocie nieprzerwany ciąg wojen i podbojów. Kreśląc główne elementy, ogłoszonej przez Prezydenta Xi Jinpinga w 2013 r., Inicjatywy Pasa i Szlaku, zestawiono profil współczesnego projektu z bezprecedensowymi osiągnięciami jego historycznego odpowiednika i postawiono pytania o – między innymi – najważniejsze lekcje z przeszłości, wnioski oraz o inspiracje z tym związane. Współczesnym Chinom zależy na tym, aby ich dotychczasowy sukces w dziedzinie produkcji i handlu w dobie postępującej globalizacji został teraz przypieczętowany projektem Pasa i Szlaku tworzącym nową infrastrukturę transportu i handlu w skali świata. W perspektywie mogłoby to nawet stworzyć podstawy nowego ładu globalnego, który – paradoksalnie – mógłby zawierać określone korekty w stosunku do tego porządku, który otworzył drogę na sam szczyt właśnie Chinom.
    In his paper, the author analyses a complex non-material (cultural) interaction on the historic Silk Road that appears to be very complex and unprecedented. To the impressive material exchange, based mainly on trade, the Silk Road inspires the today’s Chinese Belt and Road Initiative. Especially important for the author is the fact that the economic mechanism of trade, which was the main driving force of the ancient trade route, has potentially become the proposed, alternative development path for humanity, where tradition, resulting from the cult of violence, was in fact a virtually uninterrupted string of wars and conquests. The outlining of main elements of the Initiative, announced by President Xi Jinping in 2013, is used by the author to compare the profile of this modern project with the unprecedented historical achievements of its historic predecessor. The questions are asked about - among other things - the most important lessons from the past, conclusions and inspirations for the modern initiative. Contemporary China would like to seal its to-date globalisation success in the field of production and trade with the gigantic project of Belt and Road with the aim to create a new infrastructure for transportation and trade on the truly global scale. In the long run, this could even lay the groundwork for the new world order, which – paradoxically - could contain certain adjustments to the order conceived by the West, which has opened the way to the top for China.

    Przedmiotem analizy w niniejszym studium jest zjawisko stałości, integralności oraz trwałości społecznej instytucji wychowania. Wyróżnia się oraz omawia następujące aspekty tego zjawiska: a) stałość kulturowego statusu instytucji wychowania; b) (względną) niezmienność funkcji pełnionej przez tę instytucję; c) stabilizującą rolę materialnych podstaw wychowania; d) własności strukturalne edukacyjnej socjosfery; e) praktykowanie kulturowych „wzorów zachowań” w praktyce pedagogicznej; f) mechanizm odtwarzania kulturowych podstaw wychowania.
    The subject of the analysis in this study is the phenomenon of stability, integrity and social stability of educational institutions. The following aspects of this phenomenon are distinguished and discussed: a) the stability of the cultural status of educational institutions; b) (relative) invariability of the function performed by the institution; c) stabilizing role of the material foundations of education; d) structural properties of the educational socosphere; e) practicing cultural „patterns of behavior” in teaching practice; f) the mechanism of recreating the cultural foundations of education.
