The paper deals with issues regarding the disenchantment of literature stemming from the instrumental approach in literary studies. It highlights cases of resistance to this disenchantment of literature both in academic and literary works. The instrumental lecture is contrasted with the creative one, which results from opening up to otherness contained within the text. The creation of unassimilated otherness is the drving force of the literary avant-garde, which uses it as a defence against scientific disenchantment. Possible reasons for the feeling of literary disenchantment are discussed in this paper and the validity of such fears is taken into consideration.

There have been two trends in the study of technology. On the one hand, critics of technology have emphasised the threats stemming from the development and use of advanced machines and devices, while on the other hand, there has been admiration for the successes brought by progress. The article presents an attempt to put this complex issue in order. Based on the analysis formulated by Andrew Feenberg, the text discusses four concepts of technology. The first of them is technical determinism, according to which technology in its development is independent of circumstances external to it. The second is substantive theory, in which technology is seen as an autonomous, independent force that dominates and subordinates everything. The third position is instrumentalism, which considers technique as a neutral tool, while moral evaluation can only concern whether it has been used well or badly. The last approach is constructivism, according to which technology is shaped by the influence of various interest groups.

Opis:
The basic problem of tracking manoeuvring moving objects (e.g. aircrafts, ships) lies in unpredictability of object manoeuvres, with respect to the time of occurrence, duration and the type of trajectory. In this paper most representative methods of modelling and state estimation techniques applied to Manoeuvring Target Tracking (MTT) are briefly reviewed. Classification of existing approaches is made in the context of realistic and instrumentalistic paradigms of the philosophy of science. A practical example is also given that shows the impact of selecting models and estimation methods on the performance of the tracking filter for Air Traffic Control (ATC) radar.

In this article the problem of justification of mathematical axioms (in the context of traditional standpoints in the philosophy of mathematics) is discussed. Stress is laid on the methodological analysis, which concerns the notion of “justification” itself. Concrete choices, known from mathematical practice are not discussed here. In the process of formulating an axiomatic theory, the problem of the choice of the appropriate axiom system and of the justification of this choice emerges. In particular, the following problems are connected with it:(1) The problem of the relation between the concept of “justification” and “truth” of mathematical sentences (when the classical definition of truth is assumed).(2) The problem which criteria of justification can be considered appropriate, and whether the problem of justification is well-posed.(3) The problem, whether these criteria can be applied only to axioms, in the process of constructing an axiomatic theory, or also to independent sentences (after their metamathematical status has been settled. In that case, extending a theory T by an independent sentence φ or ¬φ cannot be justified by a formal proof.) (4) The problem, whether the choice of a particular justificatory procedure is motivated philosophically; in particular, whether the problem of justification is considered well-posed. These questions are analysed in the context of classical philosophical standpoints in the philosophy of mathematics, such as: (1) strict formalism; (2) Hilbert's formalism; (3) mathematical instrumentalism; (4) intuitionism; (5) Quine's realism; (6) Gödel's realism. The standpoint of the “working mathematician” is also discussed.

The need for constructing an environmental ethics that keeps sustainability in mind is the result of a collision of the realization that the natural environment is neither limitless nor impervious to actions with a view of nature that has been fundamentally instrumentalist and anthropocentric. This paper will borrow from architectural theory in an effort to do two things: First, it will point to some of the limitations of an anthropocentric view of nature and how it impacts efforts to influence environmental policy; second, it will suggest that ideas from Aristotle and Actor Network Theory can help to provide a paradigm within which we can think about nature in a way that offers an alternative framing of questions about the environment.

The article presents criticism of instrumental use of law in order to achieve the assumed social goal, such as redistribution of revenue, social justice or “improvement” of market economy. The use of law for such purpose poses a threat to freedom of an individual. Instead of providing a guarantee of freedom, law becomes its greatest enemy. The reason for such problems lies, among others, in wrongly understood sovereignty of people and democratic rule of majority. Hayek points to the fact that there are numerous tensions holding between democracy and liberalism, and that democracy can quite easily turn into dictatorship of the majority without appropriate protection.

Rozwój jest bez wątpienia jednym z najważniejszych pojęć towarzyszących rozważaniom na temat kształcenia, wychowania, edukacji. Każdy pedagog musi na pewnym etapie swojej działalności skonfrontować się z tą wysoce podatną na interpretacje ideą. Nie uniknął tego również John Dewey, którego poglądy stały się przedmiotem analizy w niniejszym artykule. Celem tejże publikacji jest rekonstrukcja teorii rozwoju amerykańskiego pedagoga oraz krytyczna refleksja nad nią na podstawie jego prac oraz wybranych dzieł omawiających myśl pedagogiczną i filozoficzną pragmatysty. W poszczególnych częściach publikacji zostały zaprezentowane główne idee związane z koncepcją rozwoju Deweya, takie jak wartość instrumentalna, pojęcie nawyku czy demokracja. Przedstawione zagadnienia zostały poddane refleksji przez pryzmat ich implikacji pedagogicznych. Dokonana analiza przedmiotu badań ukazała możliwy kierunek rozwoju jednostek w myśli Deweya, jakim jest rozwój społeczeństwa. Nieunikniona wydaje się konieczność dalszych badań nad pedagogiką amerykańskiego filozofa, aby lepiej zrozumieć i zinterpretować jego idee czy też rozstrzygnąć niejasności, jakie występują w jego pismach.
Development is undoubtedly one of the most important concepts accompanying considerations on education and upbringing. Every educator must, at a certain stage of his or her activity, confront this highly contestable idea. John Dewey, whose views are the subject of analysis in this article, was certainly not one who would have avoided this. The aim of this publication is to reconstruct the development of the theory of the American educator and to reflect critically on it on the basis of his works and selected works discussing the pedagogical and philosophical thought of the pragmatic scholar. The main ideas associated with Dewey, such as instrumental value, the notion of habit or democracy, are depicted in particular parts of the publication. The presented issues are reflected on through the prism of their pedagogical implications. The analysis of the subject showed the possible developmental directions open to individuals in Dewey’s thought, which is the development of society. It seems inevitable that further research on the pedagogy of the American philosopher is needed in order to better understand and interpret his ideas or to resolve the ambiguities that exist in his writings.

The article addresses the issue of monitoring of a technology. The author provides analysis of the inherent limitation of the very idea of controlling and points out the inevitable limits of philosophical, theoretical and practical nature. In that context, selected critical arguments concerning technology, Technology Assessment and Science and Technology Studies are presented. It is argued that the project of geoengineering exemplifies the dangerous views of scientism, so-called technological imperative and instrumentalism, the tendency to underestimate the future risks, and finally, the dilemma of control.

W artykule autor próbuje „odczarować” negatywny obraz instrumentalizacji prawa, jaki został ukształtowany w literaturze teoretycznoprawnej. Polskie prawoznawstwo za sprawą doświadczeń tzw. realnego socjalizmu miało szczególne powody do uprzedzeń względem tej problematyki. W tekście wykorzystywane są teoretyczne inspiracje pochodzące spoza nauk prawnych (filozofia pragmatycznego instrumentalizmu Johna Deweya, koncepcja polityki Maxa Webera, koncepcja polityczności Chantal Mouffe) oraz stricte prawnicze teorie instrumentalizacji (Sanne Taekemy wariant pluralistyczno-responsywny, Wiesława Langa ujęcie rekonstrukcjonistyczne). Głównym przesłaniem opracowania jest zmiana problemowego podejścia do instrumentalizacji prawa: zastąpienie tradycyjnego pytania o granice instrumentalizacji prawa stanowionego przez państwo pytaniem, jak prawo – nie ryzykując utraty swoich zasadniczych wartości i funkcji – może kooperować z naturalną skłonnością ludzi do instrumentalizowania swojego zachowania w warunkach demokratycznego, pluralistycznego społeczeństwa. Tezy artykułu osadzone są w liberalnej wizji porządku społecznego, jednak z istotną korektą polegającą na odwołaniu się do założeń pragmatyzmu i poststrukturalizmu. W zakończeniu autor wskazuje również na perturbacje, jakie może powodować w prawoznawstwie aplikowanie niektórych twierdzeń z obszaru teorii polityki opartych na poststrukturalistycznych założeniach.
In the paper, the author attempts to “disenchant” the negative image of the instrumentalization of law that has been formed in the theoretical and legal literature. Polish jurisprudence, due to the experience of the so-called ‘real socialism’, had particular reasons to be prejudiced against this issue. The text makes use of theoretical inspirations coming from outside of jurisprudence (John Dewey’s philosophy of pragmatic instrumentalism, Max Weber’s concept of politics, Chantal Mouffe’s concept of the political) and strictly legal theories of instrumentalisation (Sanne Taekema’s pluralistic-responsive variant, Wiesław Lang’s reconstructionist approach). The main aim of the paper is to change the approach to the instrumentalization of law: to replace the traditional question about the limits of instrumentalization of the law made by the state with a question about how the law – without risking the loss of its fundamental values and functions – can cooperate with the natural tendency of people to instrumentalize their behaviour in the conditions of a democratic, pluralistic society. The theses of the paper are set in the liberal vision of social order, however with a significant correction consisting in referring to the assumptions of pragmatism and post-structuralism. In the conclusion, I also point out the problems that can be caused in jurisprudence by the application of certain concepts from the area of political theory based on post-structuralist assumptions.
