Opis:
The subject of this study is the meaning of the words anima, spiritus and mens in the metrical sepulchral inscriptions in the Carmina Latina Epigraphica collection published at the end of the 19th century by Franz Buecheler. This collection comprises almost 1,900 texts, of which around 1,400 are funerary and, particularly, sepulchral inscriptions. This article consists of three sections. The first contains general comments on Roman sepulchral inscriptions. The second, and most important part uses a conventional philological method to analyze the words in the source texts that denote the immaterial aspect of the human being that continues after death. The analysis of the texts reveals that the word anima occurs about 80 times, spiritus – 20, and mens only three times. These three words stand for what is usually expressed by the word “soul,” that is, the spiritual, immaterial aspect of the human being. Conclusions are presented gradually as the analytical compilation proceeds. Firstly, there is no semantic difference between anima and spiritus; although the word animus which is close to the three words discussed in this paper does not occur in this sense in the inscriptions. Secondly, both pagan and Christian inscriptions emphasize the dichotomy between anima or spiritus and corpus or caro (alternatively membra); some Christian inscriptions, pointing to this dichotomy, express belief in the resurrection. Thirdly, despite the difference in beliefs, Roman worshipers and Christians used very similar patterns of statements about the posthumous fate of the soul, for example, astra tenent animam, astra fovent animam, anima migravit ad astra or spiritus astra tenet, spiritus petit ad astra, mens caeli perget ad astra, which means that the Christian funerary language did not develop its distinct terminology for several centuries. The third section is a very brief summary of the study carried out.

Opis:
Ashoka’s inscriptions from KandaharThe article presents the silhouette of one of the most famous rulers in the history, the Indian emperor Ashoka. However, the knowledge about him is still not impressive. Recognized and identified by the scientists relatively late he proved to be a particular monarch – after a period of tyranny and ruthlessness, cruelty inflicted by him and use of violence on a grand scale he has undergone a moral metamorphosis and attempted to expand, using authoritarian ways, pacifism to make humanity happy. To the religion of India he was like Constantine to Christianity. He promoted peace, tolerance and pacifism in the whole known world. The gate and bridge for Ashoka in the transmission of his ideas and mission towards west frontier were the areas influenced by Greeks: Gedrosia, Drangiana, Arachosia, Gandhara (largely part of contemporary Afghanistan). Strong cultural bastion of Bactria expanding to the south displaced Greek Alexandrian-Seleucid elements, what guaranteed Ashoka a success in the Hellenistic world. He based his projection on the Greek culture and Aramaic language, therefore not on Indian, but on the West Asian ideas. The meaning of Ashoka’s inscriptions found in Kandahar is a guideline for travelers and for those looking for the way to happiness.

The extant remains from both Classical and Hellenistic periods portray a body of a Greek woman in all its beauty. They do not cover what was once revealed. On the contrary, they bring the female beauty to the centre of attention. This freedom of expression gradually disappears and a body is exposed only when portraying a woman with colourful past to show her failures. This paper introduces Greek tombstone inscriptions that captured female beauty for the future generations. Upon this, a question arises: what do these inscriptions mean to a casual reader? What is their purpose? What value did a beautiful woman have in the ancient society? Was she somewhat different from those around her? How did emerging Christianity react to the Greek ideal of beauty? What ideas were adopted and what ideas were firmly rejected? These and many other questions have arisen during the study of the inscriptions that engage people even today.

The Polish version of the article was published in Roczniki Humanistyczne 56 (2008), issue 2. This article is an attempt at systematizing the body of inscriptions that accompanied the heraldic and iconographic inscriptions on Polish military flags and standards in the course of past centuries. It presents the suggestion of dividing them into four groups. The first comprises property inscriptions, giving information about who the flag belonged to, who its owner was or who used it. In the second group are inscriptions called ‘funding’ ones; they contain data referring to the funders or makers of those objects. Commemorative inscriptions were included in group three; they commemorated important events connected with the history of the unit or with its tradition. The fourth group consists of inscriptions in the form of sentences, mottos or apostrophes, usually having a lofty and solemn character. In practice, inscriptions belonging to different groups often appear side by side on the same flag. Usually they contain important information and ideological content.

The paper relates to the information contained in the Early Christian inscriptions from Rome (IC V R v. 1 - 1 0 ), from the fourth to sixth century, concerning boys below 8 years of age and referred to in the epitaphs by the term puer. The age was selected so that the information concerned children and not teenagers when the overtone of such expression could have sexual connotations. There are only 38 such epitaphs for 1962 children in the above mentioned age (1.9% ). More than a half of them (20) are very modest containing only name, age and sometimes the simplest epithet and motto (bm, in pace). The rest however include the information typical of other children’s epitaphs, posthumous descriptions, baptism details and allusions to the social background. The founders of the tomb stones are parents (10) and then the term puer is additional, even tender but also anonymous people (28) when the term could signify a slave (only one sure case) or a foster child, a boy who knew the faith (puer in fide). In my opinion they must have been orphans brought up by the community, sometimes assigned to serve in the Church (especially boys called puer nomine X ).

The Ancient Hebrew Siloam tunnel inscription has unique characteristics among Northwest Semitic epigraphic texts. It does not mention the king or deity nor does it follow any known literary genre. Its insistence on technical details indicates that it was commissioned by the builders of the tunnel with the purpose of commemorating their engineering achievement. Given this background and nature, the Siloam inscription is a unique testimony of historical consciousness among middle and lower class members of the society in the 8th-7th century Judah who felt the need to record their story in writing.

Osmołowo (Bel. Asmolava) is a village located near the town of Kletsk (Pol.=Bel. Kleck) in the eastern territory of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (today south-west Belarus). Since the middle of the 16th century it had been the centre of the Tatar settlement in the Kletsk Duchy which was the property of the Radziwiłł noble family. The only Tatar cemetery that has been preserved in Osmołowo until today had been founded at the beginning of the 19th century. The oldest grave with an inscription dates back to 1805. We have discovered 27 inscriptions from the 1st half of the 19th century The epigraphical tradition in Osmołowo at that time represented similar trends as in other cemeteries of the Polish-Lithuanian Tatar gentry. The inscriptions had been composed of Arabic or Turkish confessional formulas (mainly shahada) and of the information about the deceased (name, date of death, military ranks, family affiliation) in Polish, written in Latin and/or Arabic script. In the next decades of the 19th century, the inscriptions developed in the same way as in other cemeteries of the small-town communities of the Tatars during this period which meant that the Arabic script was used both for the confessional section and informative section (in Polish or Belorussian), and introduction of more varied Arabic or Turkich eschatological formulas as ayat 3:182, and Turkish invocations Allāh raḥmet eylesin (Tur. “Let the God have mercy”), ey ğennet müyesser eyle (Tur. “O, paradise, be accessible”) which eventually transformed into Allāh raḥmet eyle ğennet firdeuse (Tur.-Per. “O, God, have mercy, heaven, paradise”).

Braciaca, on an altar to Mars at Haddon Hall (near Bakewell, in the north Midlands of England), has been related to Welsh brag 'malt' and explained as 'he of (divine) intoxication'. Yet this is hard to see, and a new explanation from Welsh bragad 'army, host; battle' seems preferable. It ts the God of War better than 'malt' does (a product more apt for Bacchus than Mars). If so, Braciaca 'of the hosts' will be one of many terms from Roman Britain that Welsh (and related languages) can explain. To show this, we rst consider Celtic attitudes to Mars, and then go on to brag and its cognates.

The article presents structural and linguistic analysis of tomb inscriptions in two cemeteries in Latgale, Latvia – in Rēzekne and Kraslava. Five types of inscriptions are presented: nominative-identifying, locating-identifying, inscriptions with eschatological expressions, inscriptions with an invocation to the deceased and inscriptions on symbolic tombs. The Polish tombs do not differ from Latvian ones. Sometimes it is difficult to define the nationality of the person buried in a given grave, e.g. when the surname has a Polish ending (Lipowski) and the inscription is in Latvian. The article mentions a few traces of the influence of the Orthodox culture, represented by high fences made of metal surrounding the grave. The linguistic analysis showed similarity of the inscriptions from Latvia to those from Lithuania and Belarus. It can be confirmed by the presence of such features of the North Borderland as akanye, ukanye, reduction e > i/y, soft pronunciation of consonants l’, č’, d’, t’, r’. One can also observe the influence of the neighbouring languages, Russian and Latvian, on the Polish language, i.e. mixing letters and their functions. The similarity can be noticed in the form of graves – they are earth graves with a tombstone at the head including identifying data, religious symbols and portraits of the deceased.
Analiza językowa wykazała podobieństwo napisów z Łotwy do inskrypcji z Litwy i Białorusi. Potwierdza to obecność takich cech północnokresowych, jak: akanie, ukanie, redukcja e > i/y, miękka realizacja spółgłosek l’, č’, d’, t’, r’.

The fragment carries remnants of two dipinti in red ochre, of which one is illegible and the other preserves vestiges of the three first lines of the Greek inscription I. Deir el-Bahari 196. They show that the inscription was a proskynema (act of adoration) addressed to Amenothes (Greek for Amenhotep son of Hapu). The name of the author cannot be read with certainty (perhaps Pe[---]); the text also mentions a certain Menodoros, who may be the father of the protagonist of the inscription or another man. In an appendix, a fragment of another text in Greek, probably originating from the south wall of the Bark Room of the main sanctuary of Amun is presented.

Royal Elamite inscriptions offer valuable insights into a range of themes related to ancient Iran. However, to date, no Elamite creation myth has been recovered. Nonetheless, there exist indirect references in the inscriptions and rock reliefs that can be used to reconstruct such an account. This study aims to partially reconstruct the Elamite genesis by examining the linguistic and iconographical clues. It is important to note, however, that this primary investigation provides only limited insights into the creation myth in ancient Elam.

Opis:
The article offers the publication of a bronze ring discovered during the archaeological work on the site of Marina el-Alamein, located on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea c. 100 kilometres west of Alexandria. The ring dated to the second century CE on contextual and formal grounds carries the acclamation 'Great is the name of Sarapis' in Greek inscribed on its bezel. The acclamation stems from the religious atmosphere of the times, which, in the quest for the divine, ascribed a sort of superiority to some gods of the polytheistic system. The ring contributes to the picture of religious beliefs and practices of the ancient inhabitants of an anonymous settlement hidden under the site of Marina el-Alamein.

The aim of my article is to discuss six Hellenistic inscriptions which mention Hermias, son of Emmenidas, a distinguished physician from Kos. Two longer honorary inscriptions are connected with Hermias’ five-year stay on the island of Crete as a public doctor. The epigraphic sources in question will be carefully reviewed, translated into Polish and commented on the article.

The article offers editio princeps of a Greek epitaph discovered during the archaeological work of the Canadian Mission in Hambukol, a locality situated on the right-hand bank of the Nile, several kilometres to the north of Dongola, the capital of the Christian Nubian Kingdom of Makuria. The epitaph, constructed with the prayer ‘God of spirits and all flesh’, is dated to the ninth century on contextual and palaeographic grounds. It commemorates a certain Merki, who, according to the text, followed a splendid career in the state apparatus, which led from notarios to protodomestikos, i.e. the head of the royal office dealing with agriculture and fiscal matters.

Opis:
Last year, Homini Publishing House published a Polish edition of The Latin Sexual Vocabulary by J.N. Adams. The translation was made by J. Janik. In comparison with the original English version, the Polish edition has been enriched with translations of its Latin quotations. In this paper, I will carry out a critical review of the Polish edition of the book.Hoc superiore anno in lucem prodiit Polona editio libri The Latin Sexual Vocabulary a I.N. Adams conscripti, quem Polonice reddendum curavit Ioanna Janik.

Opis:
Biblical component of Old Church Slavonic text – the example of the Old Serbian inscriptionsThe paper deals with the problem of the presence of biblical material in Old Church Slavonic texts. While this question has indeed already been broadly and repeatedly discussed by palaeo-Slavists, the developments in medieval studies and the achievements in textological and editorial fields have once again made it an open issue still demanding further elaborations and clarifications. In the discourse of the discipline, the topical question concerns not so much frequency or participation as of the modes of usage of the canonical corpus, that is its concrete and conscious application, whereby it becomes an intrinsic and recognizable component of the literary work. My deliberations are intentionally limited to the example of brief literary forms, namely the Old Serbian inscriptions, which have not yet been considered or even marginalized, although they constitute lofty artistic and autonomous forms of expression, mirroring the whole repertoire of ideas, motifs, constructions and reserves of proceedings and operational strategies characteristic of the Old Church Slavonic literature.

Opis:
This article is a review of a monograph on genological research on speech species. The objects of this publication are tomb inscriptions from over 60 necropolises in the north-eastern Lublin Region, which is situated within the borders of the Orthodox Lublin-Chelm Diocese and in the western part of the Volyn oblast in Ukraine. These are ethnically, linguistically, culturally and religiously non-homogeneous areas. The analysis takes into consideration the structure, the type of the functions fulfilled by grave inscriptions, the pragmatic aspect and cultural specificity of the analyzed texts. The subject of the review is to discuss the content of the publication and to implement the research goals undertaken by the author. In assessing the scientific value of the monograph, the current methodological solutions and the role of the study in the context of the state of research in Polish text linguistics were taken into account. The reviewed monograph is a reliable empirical study, however, the adopted description model does not take into account semiotic features that would complete the information about the analyzed texts. The book may be a contribution to Slavonic dialectological studies, especially to the indication of mutual Polish-Ukrainian interferences. It constitutes a source for studying the vocabulary of the borderland. The work may be used for comparative studies of funeral texts.
