Introduction. The purpose of this study was to describe factors of possible importance for the occurrence of hand injury from powered wood splitters. Patients. Patients were identified by a computerized patient registry. Information was obtained from hospital records, a written questionnaire and a structured telephone interview. Results. Very few splitters were constructed according to European standards. Twenty-one percent of patients injured with wedge splitters thought that having more than one person at the machine was one cause of the accident. Seventy-nine percent of patients injured with screw splitters stated that glove use was one cause of the accident. Conclusions. The level of safety in wood splitters that cause hand injury is often poor. Having more than one person at the machine during work may contribute to wedge splitter injury. Glove use commonly contributes to screw splitter injury. Prevention should be directed towards unsafe machines and dangerous patterns of use.

Wstęp. Urazy i wypadki to główna przyczyna hospitalizacji i zgonów dzieci i młodzieży w Polsce. Cel pracy. Opisanie epidemiologii urazów głowy i kończyn u dzieci i młodzieży zgłaszających się do izby przyjęć (IP) o profilu chirurgicznym wybranego szpitala dziecięcego. Materiał i metody. Dokonano analizy retrospektywnej dokumentacji medycznej 3435 pacjentów w wieku 0–18 lat zgłaszających się do IP w latach 2005–2011. Wyselekcjonowano grupę 2245 pacjentów z urazami głowy lub kończyn i dokonano analizy struktury demograficznej pacjentów, określając także okoliczności, miejsce urazu, rodzaj transportu do izby przyjęć oraz postępowanie po urazie (hospitalizacja vs. porada ambulatoryjna). Wyniki. W badanym okresie z powodu urazu głowy zgłosiło się 1216 (35%) pacjentów, z powodu urazu kończyn – 1029 (30%) pacjentów. Większość urazów, zarówno głowy, jak i kończyn, dotyczyła chłopców (61,9% z powodu urazów głowy, 71,2% z powodu urazów kończyn), miała miejsce w II i III kwartale roku (odpowiednio: 36,1 i 43,1%), najczęściej dzieci w wieku 10–14 lat i powyżej 14 lat (odpowiednio: 28 i 24,4%). Większość dzieci z urazami głowy lub kończyn zgłaszała się do lekarza w ciągu 24 godzin od urazu (odpowiednio: 97 i 91% pacjentów). Większość pacjentów (74,6%) nie wymagała hospitalizacji. Wnioski. Urazy głowy i kończyn stanowią główną przyczynę zgłaszania się dzieci w trybie pilnym do izby przyjęć. Konieczne jest wdrożenie i propagowanie akcji edukacyjnych adresowanych do rodziców, nauczycieli, dzieci, młodzieży, mających na celu zwiększenie zasad profilaktyki urazów i wypadków u dzieci i młodzieży. Wskazane jest większe zaangażowanie pracowników medycznych w promowanie zasad profilaktyki wypadków i urazów u dzieci i młodzieży.
Background. Injuries and accidents are the main cause of hospitalization and deaths of children and youth in Poland. Objectives. The aim of this study was to describe the pidemiology of head and leg injuries in children and adolescents admitted to the emergency department (IP) profile of the selected children’s hospital surgery. Material and methods. A retrospective analysis of 3435 medical records of patients aged 0–18 years admitted to the IP in 2005–2011. Selected group of 2245 patients with head and limb injury and an analysis of patient demographics, determining the circumstances of the place of injury, type of transport to the emergency department and the treatment after the injury (vs. tip-patient hospitalization). Results. In the analyzed period due to a head injury 1216 (35%) patients were admitted and with limb trauma – 1029 (30%) patients. Most of the injuries, both head and limbs involved males (61.9% as a result of head injuries, 71.2% of the injuries of the limbs), took place in the second and third quarters of the year (respectively 36.1% and 43.1%), most often children age was 10–14 years and above 14 years (28% and 24.4%). Most children with head or limb injury reported to the doctor within 24 hours of injury (97% and 91% respectively). Most patients (74.6%) did not require hospitalization. Conclusions. Injuries of head and limbs are the leading cause of children reporting to the emergency room for surgery. It is necessary to implement and promote educational campaigns targeted at parents, teachers, children, youth, aimed at increasing the principles of prevention of injuries and accidents of children and adolescents. A greater involvement of health professionals in promoting the principles of prevention of accidents and injuries of children and adolescents is recommended

Introduction: Multitrauma is defined as injury involving two or more different body parts, with a condition that at least one of these injuries is life-threatening. They represent serious traumas, requiring treatment in the intensive care units and frequently surgical intervention. Aim: The objective of this study was epidemiological and clinical analysis of patients treated in 2015 year in Multitrauma Centre of the University Teaching Hospital no 1 in Szczecin, and comparison the results with outcomes of similar study conducted in the same Centre in 2007 year. Material: Clinical material comprised medical notes of 82 patients, 52 men (63%) and 30 women (37%), with a mean age of 44 years, who sustained multitrauma injuries. An analysis included causes of traumas, spectrum of injuries, involvement of body parts, methods and outcomes of the treatment. Results: The most common cause of multitrauma was traffic accident – 45 cases (55%), followed by fall from height – 22 (27%) and other mechanism – 15 (18%). The most frequent component of multitrauma made bone fractures (spine, pelvis, limbs) – 64 cases (78%), followed by head traumas – 63 (77%), chest – 53 (65%) and abdominal 30 (36%) injuries. A total of 48 patients (58%) required surgical intervention, the most frequently fixation of bone fractures – 24 patients (29%), repair of abdominal and head injuries – 18 (22%) either. Of 82 treated patients 64 (78%) survived and 18 (22%) died. A mean period of stay in Multitrauma Centre was 23 days for survived patients and 17 days for those who died. Comparing to similar analysis conducted 8 years earlier, a change in involvement of particular body parts comprising multitrauma injury was observed: number of head injuries increased of 14%, number of chest traumas and bone fractures decreased of 21% and 11%, respectively. The survival rate improved of 10%.

Lower extremities, especially the knee region, are susceptible to traumatic injuries because of long-lasting hard landings and impacts. Most of the injuries described in the literature are associated with ballet. In this review study, the authors tried to present the traumatic knee injury patterns of the Anatolian folk dance. The Fire of Anatolia dance group consists of 82 dancers (37 males [45.1%] and 45 females [54.9%]) with the mean age of 27.96 (SD = 5.05) years (range: 18–38 years). The major folk dances of the region are Zeybek, Halay, Horon, Teke, Roman, Karsilama, Bar and Lezginka (“the Caucasian”). The dancers suffered from 9 orthopedic injuries requiring surgical treatment (3 meniscus tears, 4 anterior cruciate ligament tears, 1 posterior cruciate ligament tear, 1 patellar dislocation) during a 10-year period. The authors investigated solely the traumatic injuries of these folk dance styles and aimed at revealing the traumatic knee injury patterns in this case series and literature review. On the one hand, the Anatolian folk dancers experienced meniscus tears following frequent squats and twists on single leg stances, typical of Horon and Zeybek. On the other hand, anterior cruciate tears happened after jumps and landings in the Caucasian (Lezginka jump) dance. A posterior cruciate ligament tear was also seen after the Caucasian dance landing. The split figure in the Karsilama dance ended up with patellar dislocation. Introduction: The pattern of traumatic death is a subject of great interest in the worldwide literature. Most studies have aimed to improve trauma care and raise awareness of avoidable fatal complications. Aim: The objective of the present study was an epidemiological and clinical analysis of causes of traumatic death of patients treated at the Multitrauma Centre of the University Teaching Hospital No 1 in Szczecin, over a period of 3 years (2017–2019). Material and methods: The study material comprised medical data of 32 patients with a mean age of 63 years, who died due to polytrauma injury. The time of death form admission to the Multitrauma Centre, primary cause of death, spectrum and sites of injuries, as well as method of treatment (operative or conservative) were variables considered in the analysis. Results: The predominant mechanisms of injury were traffic accidents – 22 cases (69%) followed by falls from a height 8 (25%) and other mechanism – 2 cases (6%). The most common primary cause of death was brain injury – 17 patients (53%) followed by pelvic or spinal fractures – 5 (16%). The predominant constituents of polytrauma were bony injuries (pelvis, spine and limbs) – 28 cases (87%), followed by head injuries – 25 (78%), chest – 24 (75%) and abdominal injuries – 17 (53%). Eighteen patients (56%) required operative treatment; craniotomy for brain injuries was the most commonly performed – in 11 patients, followed by laparotomy – in 5. Five other patients underwent an endovascular procedure – pelvic artery embolization. Twelve patients (38%) died in the first two days from admission to the trauma center, 5 (16%) in the first week and 15 over one week form admission. Conclusions: Head injuries, pelvic fractures with associated retroperitoneal bleeding and severe injuries affecting several body parts were identified as the most dangerous for the survival of polytrauma patients. A trend to decrease mortality due to hemorrhagic shock was observed, but it remains unchanged for central nervous system injuries.

Malignancy or its treatment affect kidney in several ways. The most common are acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease. Other form of kidney diseases can also be present such as nephrotic syndrome, tubulointerstitial nephritis, thrombotic microangipathy etc. In addition, electrolyte abnormalities such as hypercalcemia, hyponatremia and hypernatremia, hypokalemia and hyperkalemia, and hypomagnesemia. are observed. Treatment of malignancy associated kidney disease is usually symptomatic. Cessation of the offending agent or other supportive measures if needed i.e. renal replacement therapy are also implemented.

Opis:
To reduce human casualties associated with explosive ordnance disposal, a wide range of protective wear has been designed to shield against the blast effects of improvised explosive devices and munitions. In this study, 4 commercially available bomb suits, representing a range of materials and armor masses, were evaluated against 0.227 and 0.567 kg of spherical C-4 explosives to determine the level of protection offered to the head, neck, and thorax. A Hybrid III dummy, an instrumented human surrogate [1], was tested with and without protection from the 4 commercially available bomb suits. 20 tests with the dummy torso mounted to simulate a kneeling position were performed to confirm repeatability and robustness of the dummies, as well as to evaluate the 4 suits. Correlations between injury risk assessments based on past human or animal injury model data and various parameters such as bomb suit mass, projected area, and dummy coverage area were drawn.

Aim. The aim of the study was to review the literature on the prevalence of cervical spine injuries divided between the level of the injury and the causes of fractures. Material and methods. A review of Polish and foreign literature was performed. The following databases were searched: PubMed, Medline, Science Direct, Termedia, and Polish Medical Bibliography. Literature analysis. In Poland the incidence of spinal injuries, including damage to the cord, is estimated at the level of 25–35 persons per one million of the population, half of these being cervical spine injuries. More than one in three of all spinal injuries affect the atlantoaxial and occipital area. It is estimated that axis fractures occur in up to 40% of the cases involving cervical spine injury. Odontoid fractures constitute 10–15% of all cervical spine fractures. Hangman fractures account for 20% of vertebral fractures. Cervical spine injuries more frequently occur in males than in females, and the relevant rates for males are from 1.5 to 2.7 times higher. The most common causes of cervical spine injuries include road traffic accidents, accounting for 33 to 75% of the cases, falls from heights (15–44%) and sports injuries (4–18%). Cervical spine injuries are most often diagnosed in subjects over thirty years of age. Such injuries most commonly are related to the second, fifth and sixth cervical vertebrae. On the other hand damage to the first and second cervical vertebrae is often observed in the same patients who are found with injury to lower cervical vertebrae (approx. 9% of the cases). In the group of advanced age subjects the most frequent cervical spine injuries are axial fractures and they are diagnosed in 15% of adult patients with cervical spine fractures.

Introduction. Media publicity of sports and increased training have pushed the limits of the human body and have correspondingly led to an increase in the number of sports injuries. Incorrect play techniques, inadequate warm-up and other factors often lead to an increase in the number of injuries in Ultimate Frisbee. Aim. Assessment of the impact of gender, age and training experience on the incidence of injuries in Ultimate Frisbee. Material and methods. 110 people aged 16 to 35, regularly practising Ultimate Frisbee were included in the study. Of the 110 participants, 36 were women and 74 were men. The results were obtained by means of a questionnaire prepared by the authors which concerned sociodemographic data and questions about sports injuries. The incidence of injuries was analyzed in terms of the training experience, gender and age of the respondents. Statistical analysis was performed using STATISTICA 13.1. Results. Our research showed a relationship between sex and the site and type of injury. Age affects the main cause of the injury, and training experience influences the site and type of injury (p <0.05). The largest group of respondents were people training Ultimate Frisbee at least 3-4 times a week (62.73%). Conclusion. Sex and the training experience have a significant impact on the site and type of injury. The main cause of the injury depends on age; in the study group the most common cause of injury occurred when respondents were not complying with the rules and technique of the game.
