Opis:
Media literacy is a critical skill, a subset of information literacy, that at this point in history is more important than ever. Students entering higher education generally receive information literacy instruction at the lower division level. However, the skills taught at this level are rudimentary and geared toward introducing students to scholarly and peer-reviewed sources. Conversely, students have relied upon more popular resources in K-12 education and may not have the evaluative skills to more responsibly consume, and ethically use, popular, news, and social media content. Current instruction methods silo instruction between scholarly and peer-review sources for academic use separately from media consumption in everyday life. This separation is problematic as students may achieve academic information literacy and still fall prey to misinformation, they find online and in social situations. While the Association of College and Research Libraries Framework addresses the need for a set of information literacy abilities, the National Association for Media Literacy Education takes this further with their core principles. At California State University, Bakersfield, media literacy is integrated into several information literacy opportunities. However, it is in full-term information literacy instruction, where we most fully develop the concepts and techniques specific to media literacy.

Nowadays, the Internet has become one of the fundamental elements of functioning in society, also for pupils and students. Using the Internet requires specific skills related to obtaining and processing information. These are known as information literacy. They imply not only the ability to find the necessary information, but also to select reliable information that will meet the information needs of an individual. The article presents the results of research aimed at analyzing the process of using network information resources in the opinion of students. The results of the research made it possible to initially recognize and assess selected aspects of information competences in the studied group. Despite the perceived benefits and not imagining functioning without the Internet, the students showed a quite critical attitude in assessing the reliability of information obtained from the Internet.

Aim. The aim of the survey was to find out how and why users of websites containing health information searched for information, how they feel about selected criteria for assessing the credibility of information, and what they are more likely to trust when they encounter a discrepancy between information from the website and from a doctor. Methods. An online survey of users of 4 health information websites, two of which are listed as trusted sites on MedLike. The respondents assessed 10 criteria for determining the trustworthiness of online information and websites by assigning a number of stars (5 stars = important). Results. The questionnaire was answered by 32,428 respondents (79.5% women, average age 47 years). The most frequently cited reasons for seeking information were their own health or illness (49%). Most respondents searched for information through an Internet search engine (66%). The importance of the criteria for selecting information did not differ significantly. The respondents gave the highest score (2.29) to the criterion of ease (I can easily find what I need). This was followed by consistency with information from the doctor (2.28). Conclusion. The respondents searched for information in the way described in the literature as most common (using a search engine) and tended towards a heuristic evaluation of online information and its sources (ease of information retrieval) and also appreciated if the information found concurred with information from a healthcare professional.

Current library instructions, textbooks do not adequately address children, because they do not consider children’s (pre)conceptions about information literacy. Using qualitative methods this research tries to describe conceptual frameworks, distinctions to support a more efficient and constructivist library instruction. In our opinion research does not result in adaptive information about conceptions, if the research subject does not investigate relationships from the point of view of information and information literacy generally and in terms of some preferred resources. This study emphasizes a relationship between libraries and learning in children’s conceptions. Four types of conceptions were revealed in this specific sub-field, which influence preparing for autonomous learning and lifelong learning.

Information literacy lies at the heart of lifelong learning and is a prerequisite for effective participation in an information society. This article discusses the level of information literacy skills observed among Polish secondary school students, based on the example of two secondary schools in Toruń, with the information literacy of the study population identified and characterised using the SCONUL Seven Pillars of Information Literacy model, and also compared with the students' self-assessment of their information skills and knowledge. The majority of students were classified as competent, having mastered information skills to a satisfactory degree in most of the pillars analysed, although competency areas in need of educational efforts were also identified.

The article presents a multi-dimensional model of a continuum in educational environment as far as teachers’ activity in the postmodern world, inundated with rapidly developing Information and Communication Technology (ICT), is concerned. The conception is designed by means of literature analysis, complemented with the findings of empirical/diagnostic/correlative research of quantitative/ qualitative character, meant to pinpoint the levels of 1160 teachers’ information literacy within the area of the use of ICT tools and methods. The boundary values of the model were determined (i.e., the concept-constructs of “cloud” and “silo”) together with their referents to six layers, including: technology, society, economy, knowledge, culture and philosophy (epistemology, axiology). Also, an attempt was made to calibrate teachers’ performance in their educational environment at the time of technological and cultural change.
