Aim. This research paper discusses the educational process of immigrant children in Lithuania with the intention to determine the integration trajectory most likely to be chosen by the immigrant students. Methods. The research methods include legal analysis of Lithuanian legislations related to immigration, immigrant integration and education, meta-analysis of previous research on immigrant integration into Lithuanian society as well as semi-structured interviews with experts of the field. Results. Having completed the research, the following conclusion has been drawn: immigrant children education in Lithuania does not tend to create conditions for successful integration and more often than not influences immigrant students to choose those integration paths that may inspire inner or outer conflict. This is due to the lack of integration policy and strategy at the state level as well as the tendency to create a cultural hierarchy wherein the Lithuanian culture is implicitly considered as above others. Practical application. The results of the research can be used to improve the conditions of immigrant children education in Lithuanian schools on the national level as well as by schools willing to foster the integration of immigrant students; the results can also be considered in the process of establishing integration policy on the state level.

In terms of immigration flows, Poland is not only a transit country but also a place where increasing numbers of immigrants from the European Union and outside of it decide to settle down. At the same time our knowledge of the immigrants’ integration processes is very scarce. This article, based on the recent research data from the Lesser Poland region, sheds new light on the adaptation processes within the largest immigrant communities in this part of the country. It employees the ethnosizer (Constant et al. 2009) – an index which enables a quantitative assessment of the ethnic identity of immigrants – adapting it to the Polish migration realities. The authors critically evaluate the ethnosizer’s utility for future in-depth research on the integration of immigrants in Poland pointing out its weak and strong sides. The study analyzes four largest immigrant groups which reside in the region of Lesser Poland, namely: Armenians, Ukrainians, Vietnamese, and immigrants from MENA countries. The results indicate inter alia that Armenians and Ukrainians are the most integrated immigrant groups, while the Vietnamese are the most likely to opt for the separation strategy.

Punktem wyjścia prowadzonego w tym artykule wywodu jest teza o istniejących między Polską a Portugalią podobieństwach z zakresu zagadnień migracyjnych. W pierwszym rzędzie, celem wykazania owych podobieństw, autorka prześledziła historię Portugalii z perspektywy migracyjnej od czasów wielkich odkryć geograficznych. Jednocześnie wybrane portugalskie doświadczenia odniesiono do sytuacji Polski w omawianym zakresie. Następnie przybliżono wdrożone w Portugalii określone rozwiązania o charakterze politycznym, które wpisują się w ramy – wysuwanych przez Rafała Matyję, Annę Siewierską-Chmaj i Konrada Pędziwiatra – poszczególnych postulatów zasadniczych wytycznych polskiej doktryny imigracyjnej. A wspomnianymi postulatami są: po pierwsze, udzielanie ochrony uchodźcom; po drugie, działanie na rzecz szeroko pojmowanej repatriacji; po trzecie, otwarcie na migrantów z Europy, a także z innych zbliżonych do niej pod względem kulturowym obszarów i dostrzeżenie w nich potencjalnych współobywateli oraz po czwarte, przedsiębranie działań mających na celu sprowadzenie do Polski wysoko wykwalifikowanych obcokrajowców.
The thesis that there is a resemblance between Poland and Portugal in the field of migration issues is serving as a starting point for this article. First of all, the author looks at the history of Portugal since the Age of Exploration from a migration perspective. At the same time, the chosen events of Portuguese history refer to the situation of Poland within the scope of this article. Then, the author describes specific political solutions implemented in Portugal, which are compatible with a suggestion for the fundamental guidelines on the Polish immigration doctrine put forward by Rafał Matyja, Anna Siewierska-Chmaj, and Konrad Pędziwiatr. Those guideposts are: firstly; protection for refugees, secondly; working for broadly understood repatriation, thirdly; being open to migrants from Europe, as well as from other culturally similar areas and identifying them as potential fellow citizens, fourthly; undertaking a task aimed at bringing highly qualified foreigners to Poland.

As Poland is becoming a more attractive destination for immigrants, Polish schools need to develop relevant solutions that can assist the integration of immigrant students into Polish society. The objective of this study is threefold. Firstly, the paper aims to discuss the role of schools in counteracting threats to societal security resulting from increased migration. Secondly, the study investigates immigration policy and educational solutions in Poland. Finally, we evaluate educational solutions implemented in schools to facilitate the integration of immigrant children, their safety, as well as discuss the difficulties and advantages resulting from the presence of foreign students in Polish schools. The study shows that schools play a special role in educating young people about societal values, personal safety and societal security. Educational solutions aiming at immigrant integration need to be investigated in the context of multidimensional legislation on immigration. The findings of the quantitative analysis relate to the solutions adopted by Polish schools that assist the integration of foreign students. They also shed light on the problems and benefits of having heterogeneous classes. Most schools in Poland offer foreign students a number of educational opportunities related to Polish language acquisition, academic performance (e.g. remedial lessons) and social integration. Inability to speak Polish is the greatest problem at schools, which is the root cause of other complex problems, such as foreign students’ falling behind with schoolwork, slower pace of the lesson, and discipline problems.

The study of integration policies at the national level of individual countries has been dominant for a long time in Europe. There has been an outstanding set of comparative studies of national integration policies of immigrants. In recent years studies of integration process at the level of cities and municipalities have gained growing interest among researchers. While the European Union started its integration policy in 2003 multi-level governance in this area has become clearly relevant. In this model all three levels: European, national and local have started to play an important role in the development of frames and goals for the European approach to integration of third country nationals. This article aims at presenting the growing role of local level in integration policies and cooperation of cities’ networks with European institutions. In the new model of governance cities have started to evaluate and exchange their practical knowledge in integration policies with the European institutions by bypassing the national level.

The lasting traces of Czech immigration to Texas and the once prominent immigrant community lead to the cemeteries. The purpose of this study is to show how to read Czech cemetery data in Texas from the 1860s to the 1950s in order to understand the immigrants’ integration and contact with their German neighbors and the dominant Anglo-American society. To immigrants in the middle of the 19th century, Texas offered land and freedom of movement. But the reasons to return home outweighed those to stay for some of the earliest immigrants who were unable to align themselves with networks established by the German immigrants who preceded them. Those who followed the pioneers lived within interethnic social structures that they gradually abandoned in favor of the ethnocentric Czech community. Language choices, the interplay of Czech and English, and the endurance of the Czech language in tombstone inscriptions yield synchronic and diachronic data whose analysis and interpretation reveal sociolinguistic networks of immigrants, rules of social cohesion and ethnic identity.

This paper acknowledges the need for greater convergence of immigrant and ethnic minorities integration policies in Europe and critically examines the general conviction that Great Britain is the source of best practice in this policy area. The articles’ main thesis is that contrary to the commonly held view, Multiculturalism as an integration policy is not effective and adequate. This claim is supported by the three groups of arguments. First of all, Multiculturalist policies have led to ghettoisation of the society and ethnically-driven conflicts instead of integration. Moreover, such policies often violate basic principles of democracy and equality as well as abuse individual human rights in the name of the rights of cultural groups. Finally, multiculturalist approach is inadequate especially at the times of “super-diversity,” in other words, unprecedented inter- and intra-group diversification. In conclusion principles for the future common EU integration policy that can be derived from the British experience are suggested.

The increase in migration flows in 2010–2011 and 2015–2016 has brought the issue of immigrants’ integration in European countries to a qualitatively new level. The integration of immigrants and refugees is one of the central topics in academic and political discourses. This essay presents short analysis of the Swedish language policy towards integration of immigrants and refugees. The importance of this topic is determined by the fact that language is one of the instruments of inclusion in the host society.

The aim of the article is to present and evaluate the main activities that support the education of immigrant children in Poland and in selected European countries as well as to compare the models of integration in the field of the education of immigrant children in respective countries.The article uses the following methods: critical analysis of the literature and deductive reasoning techniques. The paper consists of three parts. The first part presents the role of education in integration policy and the objectives of the main models of integration in the area of the education of immigrant children. The second part presents legal regulations and key data relevant to immigrant children in Polish schools. The third part of the article presents integration models in European countries and compares the models of integration in Poland and in other European countries. The research hypothesis is the following: education of immigrant children as an important aspect of the policy of integration is characterised by diversified activities in respective European countries.

This article analyses the experience of immigrants who have migrated to Poland from the point of view of the major social dimensions of this experience: the organisational dimension which involves the immigrant’s relations with various formal public and civic institutions, the economical dimension which determines the immigrant’s material standard of living, the socio-cultural dimension which involves the immigrant’s relations with members of the receiving society and the identity dimension which involves the immigrant’s empowerment and self-identification. The emergent reconstruction of immigrants’ vision of social reality uncovers many subjective meanings, positive and negative emotions, heterogeneous experiences and individual strategies of coping with the status of “being an immigrant.” This analysis is based on the assumption that differences in immigrants’ focus on the different social dimensions and the resulting hierarchy of importance of the dimensions are a very powerful indicator of an immigrant’s conditions of life in a given country.

The paper presents the evolution of the British model of immigrant integration after World War II. It is a historical and political analysis. The author indicates the key elements of the British approach to decolonisation which were translated into concrete legal acts regulating the lives of the Commonwealth residents and immigrants arriving in the UK. The paper also discusses different dimensions of the integration of immigrants into British society. The analysis indicates that the multicultural model of immigrant integration adopted after World War II has been found to be dysfunctional, as British society has reached a state of super-diversity, becoming a very complex mosaic of races, religions and nationalities.

Wprowadzenie. Adaptowanie imigrantów i ich dzieci do rzeczywistości społeczno-kulturowej jest związane z przemieszczaniem się jednostek i grup do innego kraju. Funkcjonowanie w nowych warunkach wymaga przystosowania się do nich i integracji ze społecznością. Państwa są zainteresowane włączeniem nowych obywateli w główny nurt życia społeczeństwa, wymaga to jednak wielu przemyślanych działań, powołania instytucji i organizacji, które będą ukierunkowane na integrację imigrantów ze społeczeństwem kraju osiedlenia. Cel. Celem artykułu jest analiza procesu adaptowania dzieci imigrantów do nowej rzeczywistości społeczno-kulturowej. Materiały i metody. W pracy zastosowano metodę analizy i porównania modelów funkcjonowania procesów adaptacji w trzech krajach (Polska, Niemcy, Szwecja). Wyniki. W badanych krajach adaptacja dzieci imigrantów do nowych warunków życia organizowana jest na założeniach edukacji międzykulturowej. Prowadzi się ją głównie w szkołach, instytucjach opieki zastępczej i organizacjach pozarządowych. Wnioski. Adaptacja dzieci imigrantów i jej efektywność zależy od tradycji przyjmowania imigrantów, związanych z tym oczekiwań i rozmiarów imigracji do określonego kraju.
Introduction. Adapting immigrants and their children to the socio-cultural reality is related to the relocation of individuals and groups who settle in another country. The ability to function in new conditions requires adapting to them and integrating with the host community. States are interested in including new citizens in the mainstream of their societies. However, this requires a lot of thoughtful actions and the establishment of institutions and organizations that will be focused on the integration of immigrants with society in the country of settlement. Objective. The aim of the article is to analyse the process of adapting immigrant children to the new socio-cultural reality. Materials and methods. The study uses the method of analysing and comparing models of the functioning of adaptation processes in three countries (Poland, Germany, and Sweden). Results. In the studied countries, the adaptation of immigrant children to new living conditions is organized on the basis of intercultural education. It is conducted mainly in schools, foster care institutions, and non-governmental organizations. Conclusions. Adaptation of immigrant children and its effectivity depends on the tradition of admitting immigrants, expectations connected with it, and the amount of immigration in the given country.

Społeczeństwo europejskie zakłada, że grupy imigrantów są w stanie zaakceptować i przyswoić sobie kulturę europejską, zamiast kłaść nacisk na społeczeństwo wielokulturowe. Mówimy o asymilacji, procesie wzajemnego przyswajania treści kulturowych prowadzącym do sytuacji przejmowania kultury grupy dominującej przez mniejszości, a jednocześnie sami skłaniamy je do podtrzymywania własnej kultury, tożsamości. Głosząc rozbieżne hasła, stwarzamy szereg barier uniemożliwiających integrację na wielu różnych płaszczyznach. Nad powyższymi kwestiami autorki zastanawiają się w swoim tekście.
European community assumes that groups of immigrants can accept and assimilate to European culture, instead of emphasizing multicultural society. We speak about assimilation, i.e. the process of mutual acquisition of elements of culture leading taking over the culture of the dominant group by minorities, and at the same time we persuade them to maintain their own culture, identity. Propagating divergent slogans, we create a series of barriers preventing integration at many various levels. The issues above are considered in the paper.

Opis:
Wśród mniejszości narodowych, które są obecne w Polsce w XXI wieku, coraz liczniejsi stają się Chińczycy, wcześniej niemal nieobecni. Zaprezentowane w artykule dane obrazują dynamikę chińskiej imigracji, zwłaszcza w okresie po wstąpieniu Polski do Unii Europejskiej. Obecnie Chińczycy stali się już siódmą grupą narodowościową w Polsce, a tempo wzrostu ich liczebności ustępuje tylko Ukraińcom. W artykule omówione zostały również formy imigracji, formalny status przyjezdnych oraz niezbyt rozwinięte formy organizacji chińskich imigrantów.
Amongst the ethnic minorities residing in Poland in the 21st century, Chinese are becoming more numerous, a group that up until now had been virtually non-existent. The data presented in the article offers an image of the dynamics of Chinese immigration, particularly after Poland’s accession to the European Union. The Chinese community is presently the 7th biggest in Poland, and the pace at which it is growing is only surpassed by Ukrainians. The author also discusses the types of immigration, the formal status of the migrants residing in Poland, as well as the under-developed forms of organisation of Chinese immigrants.
