Nanay (2017) argues for unconscious mental imagery, inter alia based on the assumption that successful performance in imagery tasks requires the manipulation of mental imagery. I challenge this assumption with the help of results presented in Shepard and Metzler (1971), Zeman et al. (2010), and Keogh and Pearson (2018). The studies suggest that imagery tasks can be successfully performed by means of cognitive/propositional strategies which do not rely on imagery.

According to the general theory of attention the selective function creates the perceptive and cognitive fractions. Conversely the controlling function creates behavioural and immanent fractions. Particular connection with visual attention has the perceptive function. It as two types such as an exploratory attention and as a penetrative attention. Former guides the process of focusing areas of retina with an existing image onto the central area ranking them accordingly with their physical properties such as density, contrast, motion, etc. The penetrative attention constantly creates a program of an object’s identification comprised of memory imprints and current spacial relation between the observed object and the observing eye. The cognitive attention supports only processing of imagering. It doesn’t involve oculomotoric activity. The full text of the article explores as well relationships between visual attention and phenomenons of classic psychology: Perky’s effect, eidetic imagery and alternative figures and silhouettes.

Opis:
This paper treatises Polish sociology of borderlands (mostly Eastern) as the rich resources of metaphors of borders, especially national and political ones. It shows how these metaphors are linked to different sociological imagery-modern and postmodern. Its aim is to reconstruct analytical strategies and research projects from this sub-discipline, focusing on metaphors of borders. These strategies and projects are based on very different approaches to metaphors. The first operation is an instrument which the theoretician uses to reconstruct the theoretical typology of borders and borderlands. The second operation is a tool which the researcher uses to reflect more deeply on the empirical data concerning individual and collective reactions to borders and borderlands. The third operation is a narrative tool used by examinees who inhabit the borderlands. The paper provides a broad and intensive discussion of the functions of different metaphors about borders in relation to the different intellectual approaches to problems of borderlands and borders. It stresses the needs for equal treatment in Polish sociology of borderland problems of borderlands and problems of national borders. Especially emphasizes the positive functions of academic interest in borders metaphors in this scientific treatment. Generally speaking, this analyse enhances many links between sociology of borderlands and cultural anthropology and is closely connected to the question of where these intellectual operations on metaphors belong in the project of an interdisciplinary approach to borders and borderlands.

Opis:
Detecting fog over sea, especially in early stages of its development, is extremely important due to the threats it imposes on sea navigation. Measurement and observation network in the areas is very thin and limited to single drifting buoys and information provided irregularly by the crews of ships. For these reasons, fog detection by means of remote sensing methods becomes especially significant. The paper presents possibilities to detect fog developing in the most difficult to detect cases – in the air cooling at night time – when it is not possible to sense in the visible light and when the thermal contrast between the fog and the underlying surface is lower than the thermal resolution of the IR images. Analysis of differential and RGB composite images produced from results of observation of the same meteorological objects obtained in various spectral bands reveals features unobservable in each of the bands separately. Using the EUMETSAT recommendations, algorithms of creating RGB composite images were developed in the Department of Geographic Information Systems and applied to images for analysis.
Uwzględniając zalecenia EUMETSAT, w Zakładzie Systemów Informacji Geograficznej opracowano algorytmy tworzenia kompozycji barwnych i zastosowano je do analizowanych zdjęć.

Opis:
One distinct interest in self-knowledge is an interest in whether one can know about one’s own mental states and processes, how much, and by what methods. One broad distinction is between accounts that centrally claim that we look inward for self-knowledge (introspective methods) and those that claim that we look outward for self-knowledge (transparency methods). It is here argued that neither method is sufficient, and that we see this as soon as we move beyond questions about knowledge of one’s beliefs, focusing instead on how one distinguishes, for oneself, one’s veridical visual memories from mere (non-veridical) visual images. Given the robust psychological and phenomenal similarities between episodic memories and mere imagery, the following is a genuine question that one might pose to oneself: “Do I actually remember that happening, or am I just imagining it?” After critical analysis of the application of the transparency method (advocated by Byrne [2010], following Evans [1982]) to this latter epistemological question, a brief sketch is offered of a more holistic and inferential method for acquisition of broader self-knowledge (broadly following the interpretive sensory-access account of Carruthers [2011]). In a slogan, knowing more of the mind requires using more of the mind.

This article is devoted to the uses of different Italian prepositions in expressions describing the same fragment of reality, as exemplified by: una ragazza dai capelli rossi and con una ragazza (i) capelli rossi, both referring to a red-haired girl. Situating the research in the field of Cognitive Grammar by R. Langacker (the relation between a trajector and a landmark) and based on the conception of pre-cognitive schema, the following hypotheses were verified: 1. preposition, as a relational category, reconstructs in a sentence the relation between the trajector and the landmark; 2. preposition, as a localistic category, illustrates the spatial and/or temporal mutual distribution of the trajector and the landmark; 3. the ordering of the trajector and the landmark does not necessarily reflect the order of perceived elements: the element expressed after a preposition can be a starting point to the perception of a scene; 4. differences in the choice of prepositions express different ways to conceptualize the same fragment of reality; 5. prototypical uses of prepositions refer to relational schemas and localistic pre-conceptual schema; 6.there exist asemantic uses of prepositions, as indicated by language users’ preferences; 7. each preposition has its own semantic invariant.

Opis:
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The paper addresses the role of memory in sustaining the continuity of culture. While culture is seen as an idealised cognitive system, comprising the knowledge, values, and beliefs of members of a community, language is viewed as a cognitive tool that functions an aid to cultural transmission. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: We underscore the fundamental importance of memory as a cornerstone of the correlation between the axiological and pedagogical aspects of the transfer of knowledge across generations of community members. The paper adopts a cognitive‑cultural viewpoint on the phenomenon of memory and its grounding in culture. We employ the cognitive‑linguistic methodology of converging evidence, including selected insights from cognitive psychology. In our study, we investigate this issue by exploring the imagery of religious language, the Bible being the ultimate source of Christian ideas on how to represent abstract notions concerning religious truths. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: Specifically, we analyse the use of linguistic imagery in John Paul II’s Roman Triptych. Since the Author’s speculative thought encourages meditation on the human condition in the world and their relationship with God, a substantial amount of imagery is Biblical in nature. RESEARCH RESULTS: We underscore the creativity of Wojtyła’s linguistic choices that reveal a specific conceptualisation of time and space, which derives from the Author’s sociocultural situatedness. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: In conclusion, we account for the role of spatial thought and external representations in shaping the unique space‑time of the Triptych. We suggest that the results of the linguistic‑cultural analysis may foster the dialogue between science and religion by offering our own interpretation of panchrony, which we show to be derivative of human situated cognition, rather than a label applicable to a perspective onto the language‑time relation within the domain of linguistic study (vis‑à‑vis the dichotomy of synchrony and diachrony).

Opis:
Virginia Woolf describes her artistic goal in The Waves as an attempt to create “an abstract mystical eyeless book.” Yet, in creating her eyeless book, one that eschews a single narrative perspective, Woolf amasses abundant visual details. For each of her six characters, visual images mark significant moments of being. In fact, Woolf emphasizes the characters’ capacity for sight as a vulnerability that allows them to be violated and wounded over and over. This article analyzes connections between visual imagery and themes of violence in the novel to demonstrate how they cohere into an extended metaphor for the ways in which acts of looking can elicit powerful emotions that threaten to fragment individual identity in painful ways. While Woolf’s novel has received critical commentary that focuses on the role of vision in the narrative and critics have also noted how violence in the text supports other themes, the explicit relationship between sight and violence has not yet been fully explored. A close examination of the visual imagery in key scenes of the novel demonstrates how Woolf engages the reader to participate in the characters’ deepening sense of fragmentation as they are repeatedly assaulted by experience, as the eyes themselves become symbols of the twin dynamics of desire and destruction.

Opis:
Since the inception of the L2 motivational self system (Dörnyei, 2005), which operationalises motivation as a function of learners’ future identities, the field of L2 motivation has seen a growing interest in mental imagery. Numerous studies have examined the role of a future self-guide, that is, the ideal L2 self, and have confirmed it to be powerful for explaining learner motivation (e.g., Csizér & Lukács, 2010; Dörnyei & Ushioda, 2009); however, few studies have explored how mental imagery, a key dimension of the ideal L2 self (Dörnyei & Chan, 2013), can manifest itself in actual motivated behaviour. Using in-depth interviews, the present study aims to explore the motivational capacity of the natural use of mental imagery in three doctoral candidates studying at a British university. The main research focuses on examining how imagery was employed to stimulate the participants’ L2 learning and their doctoral research as well as career choice. This paper proposes a conceptual framework of types, functions, and conditions of imagery in academic and professional achievements based on the data obtained. It reveals an intriguing array of imagery types, functions, and conditions, which shape the achievement of the individuals’ desired goals. Recommendations and implications for future research on imagery use in SLA are also discussed.

Opis:
Congenital aphantasia, or the complete absence of mental imagery, is a topic that has recently aroused the interest of researchers in many fields including philosophy, psychology and cognitive sciences. While it is generally supposed that we all have rich mental lives full of imaged representations, estimates suggest 2-3% of the population may have never formed an image or seen ‘in the mind’s eye.’ This paper aims to address the scepticism surrounding aphantasia, the challenges in communicating about mental imagery, and the research methods used in cognitive sciences today through the lens of Wittgenstein’s philosophy. The paper argues that 1) communicating about mental imagery involves language games that persons with aphantasia may not be able to play (i.e., makes reference to expressions and concepts that are meaningless for them, such as ‘visualise,’ ‘form an image,’ etc.); 2) that as a consequence aphantasia, in present research, is only describable negatively (as lack or incapacity); 3) that rather than a cognitive or a psychological issue, aphantasia should be understood as a grammatical one; and 4) that we need to invent new language games in order to come to a better understanding of conditions such as aphantasia, and to be able to appreciate the rich diversity and variability of human experience.

Lack of vivid sensory imagery has recently become an active subject of research, under the name of aphantasia. Extremely vivid imagery, or hyperphantasia, is at the other end of the spectrum of individual differences. While most research has focused on visual imagery in this paper I argue that from a neuropsychological perspective this phenomenon is much more widespread, and should be categorized as imagery sensory agnosia. After over twenty years of learning to play music phenomenology of auditory imagery agnosia is described from the first-person perspective. Reflections on other forms of imagery agnosia and deficits of autobiographical memories are presented and a hypothesis about putative brain processes that can account for such phenomena is discussed. Extreme individual differences in imagery and in autobiographical memory have implications for many fields of study, from consciousness research to education.

The influence of climate and topography on crop condition and yield estimates is most effectively monitored by non-invasive satellite imagery. This paper evaluates the efficiency of free-access Sentinel 2 and Landsat 5, 7 and 8 satellite images scanned by different sensors on wheat growth and yield prediction. Five winter and spring wheat cultivars were grown between 2005 and 2017 in a relatively small 11.5 ha field with a 6% slope. The normalized difference vegetation index was derived from the satellite images acquired for later growth phases of the wheat crops (Biologische Bundesanstalt, Bundessorenamt and Chemical industry 55 – 70) and then compared with the topography wetness index, crop yields and yield frequency maps. The results showed a better correlation of data obtained over one day (R2 = 0.876) than data with a one-day delay (R2 = 0.689) using the Sentinel 2 B8 band instead of the B8A band for the near-infrared part of electromagnetic spectrum in the normalized difference vegetation index calculation.
