Opis:

The article discusses some basic notions related to intercultural foreign language teaching. These include: intercultural communication competence, intercultural teaching, and intercultural training. The article also presents the results of research allowing an overview of the status quo of interculturality from the perspective of Polish teachers of the German language. The research is of a very general nature as it was supposed to counterbalance numerous operationally detailed surveys and provide data on to what extent the teachers understand interculturality as a general guideline in teaching German as a foreign language.

The presented diagnostic study concerning intercultural competence was carried out in the pedagogical context of intercultural education. The research place was chosen purposively: it resulted from the intercultural character of Białystok. In the interwar period that the study refers to, the biggest national groups in the town were Poles and Jews. There were also Belarusians, Russians, Germans and Tatars. As part of the analysis of intercultural competence of students from Poland and Israel I focused on the respondents’ declarations concerning their knowledge of the social structure of pre-war Białystok. Then, I determined what motivates secondary school students to learn about the past. Developing the competence in the affective/motivational area is of key importance in intercultural communication. Identifying the reasons why secondary school students from Poland and Israel find it worth learning about the history of their ancestors is as important as knowledge of the history of our cultural group and other cultures. It was also important to determine the level of Polish youths’ readiness to communicate with students from Israel, and vice versa. Diagnosing the students’ competence allows educators to plan adequate educational activities aimed at broadening intercultural competence, to strengthen the existing resources, to improve the weak points, and fill in the gaps.

Opis:

This paper presents qualitative research examining to what extent sojourns abroad engage their participants in intercultural interactions and whether or not such experience translates into students’ intercultural growth. The results of the study demonstrated that studying abroad did not provide students with ample opportunities to immerse into the local community and fully discover a new cultural environment. However, students surrounded by local and their fellow international students met foreign cultures, which motivated them to explore and interpret the encountered diversity, and thus equipped them with knowledge about foreign cultures, sensitizing them to cultural diversity. Sometimes such contacts challenged students’ preconceived judgments and stereotypes of specific cultural groups, their ways of thinking, valuing and acting, and resulted, to a lesser or greater extent, in rethinking these, leading to changing attitudes and values. International experiences also stimulated students to self-analyze their own cultural identity, and thereby contributed to their growth in self-awareness in this respect. By offering opportunities for experiencing cultural differences and prompting students to develop coping strategies and to make references to the home culture, the sojourn is thus of significant importance for tertiary students, allowing for fostering their intercultural development to a certain degree.

The article deals with the phenomenon of intercultural communication. Presented are the results of the survey method aimed at analysing the level of formation of intercultural competence of Ukrainian VSPU students living abroad. Differences and similarities in the students’ intercultural communication experience have been revealed by comparison. The ranking method was used to classify the obtained data when analysing the students’ life experiences abroad. The research results were presented graphically in charts and tables using descriptive statistics.

Opis:

The aim of the research was to determine the differences in the level of intercultural sensitivity of students of the Polish-Belarusian interactive borderland. The research was based on the model of competence for intercultural communication by Guo-Ming Chen and William J. Starosta (1996) built of three dimensions: intercultural awareness, intercultural sensitivity and intercultural adroitness. The applied research method was a diagnostic survey with survey technique and a research tool in the form of the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale, translated into Polish and Belarusian. The study covered 202 students, including 91 Poles and 101 Belarusians studying at the universities in Lublin. The research has shown that a higher level of intercultural sensitivity is presented by Belarusian students, which includes, among other things, a significantly higher result of one of the five dimensions of intercultural sensitivity, i.e. confidence in interaction.
Celem badań była próba określenia różnic w poziomie wrażliwości międzykulturowej studentów pogranicza interakcyjnego polsko-białoruskiego. Badania oparto na modelu kompetencji do komunikacji międzykulturowej autorstwa Guo-Minga Chena i Williama J. Starosty (1996), zbudowanego z trzech wymiarów: świadomości międzykulturowej, wrażliwości międzykulturowej i sprawności międzykulturowej. Zastosowaną metodą badawczą był sondaż diagnostyczny z techniką ankietową i narzędziem badawczym w postaci Skali Wrażliwości Międzykulturowej wyżej wymienionych badaczy, przetłumaczony na język polski i białoruski. Badaniami objęto 202 studentów, w tym 91 Polaków i 101 Białorusinów studiujących na uczelniach wyższych w Lublinie. Badania wykazały, że wyższy poziom wrażliwości międzykulturowej prezentują badani studenci białoruscy, na co składa się m.in. istotnie wyższy wynik jednego z pięciu wymiarów wrażliwości międzykulturowej, tj. pewności w interakcji.

The article focuses on intercultural communication, which creates a passage from a multicultural environment towards social integration and intercultural relations. The author introduces the topic by short characteristics of changes in the modern world, determined by social mobility and multiculturalism. The article presents then some chosen aspects of social integration of migrants seen as bilateral process which requires the development of intercultural competences of both migrants’ and the receiving community. The author further describes intercultural communication and stresses its importance for education and social development. Finally, some factors conditioning the acquisition of intercultural competence with reference to Gordon Allport’s contact hypothesis and informational influences are presented along with highlighting the importance of empathy.

Alongside the globalisation phenomenon, many European countries have already situated their educational practice in existing multilingual contexts. The multilingualism policies of the European Union provided an ideal backdrop to the development of integrative approaches such as Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and, as a result, the term CLIL was coined in 1996 through sustained interest and pedagogical activity in the field of bilingual education across Europe. CLIL environments can also facilitate the promotion of intercultural communicative competence as described in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. In addition, as culture seems to be one of the five dimensions of CLIL provision, it is essential to discuss and consider the incorporation of an intercultural perspective in CLIL. This study examines whether learners’ capacity to use a foreign language (FL) successfully in the global world is developed in the FL classroom in Polish high schools. The article reports results of the quantitative research which aimed at assessing whether and to what extent homogeneous FL classes in Poland are conducive to developing learners’ intercultural (IC) sensitivity and competence. The results obtained from the two study samples, namely learners and teachers, are contradictory: In the students’ opinion, IC teaching/learning plays a marginal role, whereas the teacher respondents claim they practice IC teaching moderately. Thus, to be able to get a broader picture of IC teaching/learning in Poland the current research should be complemented by a separate qualitative study, that is, lesson observations and interviews with teachers and students. Only then could more valid conclusions be drawn.

The coexistence of different nations, races i.e. cultures in the same social space that could be a country, a village or even a company is already a fact. Nowadays, not taking into account the tools of intercultural communication may result in damaging every communicative act. We believe that there is a necessity for revising and explaining the concepts related to the subject of intercultural communication from the perspective of foreign language teaching. In this article we will discuss such concepts as: interculturalism, transculturation, acculturation, integration, identity, etc. We will also look into the origin of intercultural communication. All these reflections will bring us closer to the intercultural competence which, in our opinion, students of foreign languages, i.e. intercultural speakers, should possess. In conclusion, we present the main objectives of the Common Frame of Reference for the Languages of the Council of Europe (2002) with regard to intercultural education.

Shaping learners’ intercultural competence has been slowly paving its way to a due rank in education. Developing intercultural competence results from familiarization with culture, which may take place in a direct or indirect way. What is essential here is the role of the teacher, who functions as a mediator between cultures. The presented study aims at indicating the growing significance of intercultural aspects of education in Europe - a united multiculturalness bothered by the crisis, as well as presenting (in reference to bilingual teaching) theoretical and practical solutions for intercultural education, providing inspiration for pedagogical practice. Bilingual teaching, as one of the most innovative forms of foreign language teaching, is a manifestation of practical implementation of the intercultural approach to education and it enhances shaping intercultural competence.

Opis:

The emergence in recent years of the concept of intercultural learning has raised questions about how the notion relates to a pedagogy that fosters openness, exploration, and critical thinking. In this article, the author provides a critical examination of a conventional understanding of intercultural learning to clarify its construction and to elucidate its instructional implications. Central to this alternative is a pedagogy that acknowledges students’ former experiences and competencies without making cultural predictions. Instead of reducing the process of understanding to a technical issue, this paper advocates the integration of intercultural learning in schools by connecting the curriculum to students’ lives and identities. This paper ends with a consideration of the future prospects of intercultural learning, suggesting more research on how intercultural learning actually takes place in schools and society.

Intercultural (foreign language) teacher training tends to concentrate on selective case studies developed to show communicative problems, caused by their very special intercultural and multilingual characteristics. It also tends to make a big promise of a rapid improvement in intercultural communication in a multicultural and multilingual society by transferring the solutions for intercultural communicative problems to the students’ own experience. Such an approach fails to take into account the fact that encounters with inadequate communicative acts (behaviours/speech acts) determined by cultural and/or language differences are a daily experience of everybody and require a lot of communicative effort in order to prevent intercultural problems before they happen. The following article discusses what is meant by communicative effort, how past studies on the intercultural competence of (foreign language) teachers account on communicative effort, and how to prepare students to undertake communicative effort in their daily communicative activities in a multicultural and multilingual society

Artykuł opisuje projekt pod nazwą „Trener – Ekspert” realizowa- ny wspólnie przez Katedrę Porównawczych Studiów Cywilizacji UJ i stowarzyszenie SIETAR Polska (Society for Intercultural Edu- cation Training and Research). Celem projektu było opracowanie i przeprowadzenie warsztatów międzykulturowych dla studentów kierunku Kulturoznawstwo. Każdy warsztat został przygotowany przez zespół składający się z trenera (lub trenerów) międzykulturo- wego z SIETAR Polska, który wybrał metody aktywizujące z obsza- ru dydaktyki trenerskiej oraz wykładowcy KPSC, który pełnił rolę eksperta w zakresie danego tematu. Warsztaty dały studentom moż- liwość zapoznania się z formą treningu międzykulturowego, prze- ćwiczenia umiejętności, które mogą im ułatwić kontakt z osobami odmiennymi kulturowo, a także zastanowienia się nad własną posta- wą otwartości na różnice kulturowe. W 2016 r. odbyły się dwa war- sztaty, tzn. dotyczący współpracy z Hindusami i procesu stereotypi- zacji. Obydwa warsztaty spotkały się z dużym zainteresowaniem ze strony studentów. Projekt pozwolił także na wypracowanie standar- dów współpracy wykładowcy z trenerem międzykulturowym, które będzie można wykorzystać przy realizacji kolejnych tego typu pro- jektów w przyszłości.
The article describes a project entitled „Trainer – Expert” that was rea- lised jointly by the Centre for Comparative Studies of Civilisations at the Jagiellonian University and SIETAR Polska (Society for Intercul- tural Education Training and Research). The aim of the project was to prepare and conduct intercultural workshops for students of Cultural Studies. Every workshop was developed by a team consisting of an in- tercultural trainer (or trainers) from SIETAR Polska who selected the active training methods, and a CCSC lecturer who had the role of an expert in a particular subject of the training. The workshops gave stu- dents the opportunity to learn a formula for intercultural training and to practise skills that may enable them to communicate effectively across cultures. They also could reflect critically on their own attitude towards cultural diversity. In 2016 two workshops took place, i.e. on cooperating with Indians, and on the process of stereotipization. Both workshops met with great interest among students. The project also resulted in cre- ating the standards of the lecturer – intercultural trainer collaboration, which will be very useful for implementing similar projects in the future.

In the presented work, an attempt is made to specify the theory-cognitive significance of J. Reykowski’s concept of multidimensional moral development for intercultural studies. This proposal seems to be particularly useful in pedagogical analyses dealing with moral reasoning of children. The presented research results and their interpretation confirm the presence of intercultural differentiation in the development of evaluation standards of learners in late childhood. Therefore, this concept may have broader application in intercultural studies in education.

Opis:

This article briefly reviews chosen forms and methods of intercultural competence training for military and civilian personnel of the Ministry of Defence. Special attention is put to Internet Communication Technology (ICT) for academic purposes in form of e-learning platforms. Teaching modules or simulation software help teachers build more attractive content and more convinced messages. The example of such a solution is the NDU’s Introduction to Cultural Awareness e-learning course, which was tasked by the Individual Training and Education Developments NATO Training Group in 2012. The authors of the article were fully engaged in the course development process and worked with the Poland ADL Partnership Lab team. The aim of the article is to present the e-learning course, which, by its design, can support the acquisition and development of intercultural competence.

Intercultural research in the area of communication was initiated in the early 20th century. Over the last few decades, researchers have built a solid theoretical basis in this field. Nowadays, intercultural analyses include a rich collection of texts on cross-cultural differences, the specificity of the phenomenon in the area of verbal and non-verbal communication and also the role of the media. There is no doubt that in an era of dynamic transformations of media use by people all over the world, the sub-discipline of intercultural communication is facing another challenge – that of including social media and network communication processes into new empirical theories and research. The article answers the question of the status of communication research in the field of the intercultural contexts of the new media. Additionally, the directions of future development of these studies and conclusions are discussed.

For future professionals of innovative activity, it’s even more important than for others. The process of innovations’ working out often deals with problems of creating something new, of forming of new ideas. And any variety can help, because another person is a treasure trove of new points of view. Intercultural communication can be a source of new ideas, new knowledge and skills, new professional competences, as well as a new channel to promote an innovative product to different target groups.

My point of departure for this paper is that translation, so long neglected in foreign language teaching, can not only improve students’ linguistic competences in both a foreign language and their mother tongue, but also their awareness of cultural and intercultural elements. It is a widespread popular assumption, among those not involved in language teaching, that linguistic competences are the key to learning a language and to communicating in a foreign language; consequently, they assume that translation ought to play a major role in the study of a foreign language. Indeed, late 20th century theories of language teaching, apart from the grammar-translation method, have largely ignored or criticized the role of translation. I will focus on a translation course I taught to a class of a year three Italian undergraduate students studying foreign languages, and discuss the advantages of using translation to improve students’ linguistic competences, in their mother tongue and in the foreign language, and to develop their intercultural communicative competences and their cultural (Bassnett, 2002, 2007) and intercultural awareness (Kramsch, 1993, 1998). The translated text was taken from The Simpsons, season 21, episode 16.

Opis:

The aim of this study was to determine the differences between the most significant intercultural competences and the level of their acquisition by Polish economic emigrants in the UK. The research was based on the objectivist paradigm and used the method of diagnostic survey, with a questionnaire of my own design employed as a survey technique and a research tool. 261 employees of different companies and businesses located in South West England were surveyed. 123 properly filled in questionnaires were analysed. The obtained results indicated that the surveyed individuals acknowledged the importance of the analysed intercultural competences on the job market and reasonably judged their own acquisition of such competences. The analysis of six specific competences displayed significant statistical differences, with the average acquisition level classified as mediocre, in such areas as: interpersonal flexibility, cultural interaction, tolerance, the ability to cope with stress, cooperation, cultural participation and foreign language skills. The surveyed individuals showed the biggest deficits in these competences, which could influence the effectiveness of their functioning in the intercultural living and working environment.
Celem badań była próba ustalenia różnic pomiędzy najważniejszymi kompetencjami międzykulturowymi a poziomem ich przyswojenia w opinii polskich emigrantów zarobkowych w Anglii. Badania ulokowano w paradygmacie obiektywistycznym z wykorzystaniem metody sondażu diagnostycznego z techniką ankietową oraz narzędziem badawczym w postaci kwestionariusza ankiety własnej konstrukcji. Objęto nimi 261 pracowników różnych firm i przedsiębiorstw ulokowanych w południowo-zachodniej części Anglii, z czego 123 poprawnie wypełnionych narzędzi wykorzystano do analiz. Analiza uzyskanych wyników wykazała, że badane osoby dostrzegając ważność analizowanych kompetencji na wielokulturowym rynku pracy, jednocześnie dokonały rzetelnej samooceny w zakresie ich przyswojenia. Szczególnie dotyczy to sześciu kompetencji, w których wystąpiły różnice istotne statystycznie, ze średnimi wynikami przyswojenia na poziomie przeciętnym, takich jak: Elastyczność interpersonalna; Interakcja kulturowa; Tolerancja; Umiejętność radzenia sobie ze stresem; Współpraca, uczestnictwo w kulturze; Znajomość języków obcych. Zatem to w zakresie tych kompetencji badane osoby wykazują największe braki, które mogą wpływać na efektywność funkcjonowania w wielokulturowym środowisku życia i pracy

Celem artykułu jest refleksja nad znaczeniem kompetencji międzykulturowych w budowaniu społeczeństwa pluralistycznego, otwartego na różnorodność kulturową. Na przykładzie analizy nowego programu studiów anglojęzycznych Intercultural Communication in Education and the Workplace, funkcjonującego na Wydziale Humanistycznym Uniwersytetu Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej w Lublinie, podjęto próbę wskazania, w jakich aspektach i w jaki sposób można nabywać i promować kompetencje międzykulturowe. Przedmiotem analiz nie jest natomiast edukacja międzykulturowa jako taka, gdyż była ona przedmiotem rozważań wielu innych badaczy. Na początku podjęto próbę zdefiniowania samego pojęcia kompetencje międzykulturowe przy uwzględnieniu komponentów poznawczych, emocjonalnych i behawioralnych. Odpowiedź na pytanie, dlaczego ważne jest nabywanie kompetencji, znajduje się w części omawiającej czynniki (imperatywy) wskazujące na ich niezbędność we współczesnym zglobalizowanym, skompresowanym przestrzennie i usieciowionym świecie. W końcowej części artykułu zamieszczono analizę założeń kierunku i programu studiów międzykulturowych, będącą próbą przedstawienia praktycznej propozycji nabycia kompetencji międzykulturowych w lubelskim akademickim środowisku międzynarodowym.
The aim of the article is to discuss the importance of intercultural competences in building a pluralistic society, open to cultural diversity. Based on the example and analysis of the new program of English language studies, i.e. Intercultural Communication in Education and the Workplace, which operates at the Faculty of Humanities of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin, an attempt was made to identify the aspects and ways in which intercultural competences can be acquired and promoted. However, the author does not analyze intercultural education as such, as this has been the subject of research by many other investigators. In the first section, an attempt was be made to define the concept of intercultural competences taking into account cognitive, emotional and behavioral components. The answer to the question why it is important to acquire competences is discussed in the part where the author examines the factors (imperatives) indicating the indispensability of such competences in the contemporary globalized, spatially compressed and cross-linked world. In the final part of the article, the assumptions of the course and the program of intercultural studies are analyzed with a view of presenting a practical proposal of acquiring intercultural competences in Lublin’s international academic environment.

O artigo expõe a o estudo da comunicação intercultural no contexto de aprendizagem formal de línguas estrangeiras, que objetiva conduzir os falantes/aprendizes à competencia comunicativa junto a membros de diversas culturas. Definem-se os conceitos de “comunicação intercultural”, “competência comunicativa” e “competência comunicativa intercultural”. Observam-se as relações entre língua, cultura e comunicação, com ênfase nas influências de padrões culturais sobre os processos de comunicação. Expõe-se a atual abordagem de componentes culturais em livros didáticos e em salas de aula. Defende-se a inserção da dimensão intercultural nos planos de estudo de línguas estrangeiras, promovendo-se o conceito de “mediador cultural” como modelo para o falante de línguas estrangeiras. Oferecem-se os princípios e as técnicas da comunicação intercultural aplicáveis às aulas de língua estrangeira, guiando o professor em busca de novos objetivos interculturais nas salas de aula. Por fim, propõe-se a auto-percepção e auto-avaliação dos aprendizes de línguas estrangeiras no que se refere à competência intercultural.

The subject of the article is the role of films in intercultural dialogue. Filmmakers follow the causes of intra-cultural tensions, talk about the impossibility of assimilation, nostalgia for their country, or family relations. Contemporary cinema takes part in the dialogue of cultures, critically analyses complex intercultural relations and provides an important voice in the discussion of values resulting from diversity. By talking about intercultural relations, filmmakers contribute to strengthening the dialogue of cultures. Dialogue with other cultures also requires educational measures, and one of the educational tools to respect cultural diversity is film.
Przedmiotem rozważań zwartych w artykule jest rola filmów w dialogu międzykulturowym. Filmowcy śledzą przyczyny napięć wewnątrzkulturowych, opowiadają o niemożności asymilacji, nostalgii za krajem ojczystym czy relacjach rodzinnych. Współczesne kino bierze udział w dialogu kultur, krytycznie analizuje skomplikowane relacje międzykulturowe i stanowi ważny głos w dyskusji o wartościach wynikających z różnorodności. Opowiadając o relacjach międzykulturowych, filmowcy wnoszą wkład w umacnianie dialogu kultur. Dialog z innymi kulturami wymaga także podjęcia działań edukacyjnych, a jednym z narzędzi edukacji do poszanowania kulturowej różnorodności może być film.

The paper discusses the perspectives of intercultural linguistics as a new paradigm of German philology. Concepts of cultural standards are critizised and deficits of cultural contrastive analysis are demonstrated as shown by the example of code mixing. It is argued that interculturality is more than cultural contrastivity and more than transculturality and furthermore that for intercultural research the analysis of language is of utmost importance. Finally the paper demonstrates that in the central subject of intercultural communication it is worth while not only looking at misunderstandings but also at the different modes of linguistic politeness.

Opis:

Przy zaburzeniu parametrów rytmicznych (podczas względnie poprawnej artykulacji) rozumienie mowy jest znacznie trudniejsze. Nie fonem, lecz rytm oraz intonacja stają się podstawą pomyślnej komunikacji. Rytm jest pierwotną właściwością poezji i muzyki, bez którego nie mogą one istnieć. Wykorzystanie piosenki i wiersza na zajęciach ze studentami nie tylko stwarza możliwość wypracowania tempa i rytmu mowy, jest to również efektywna metoda umożliwiająca opanowanie suprasegmentalnych jednostek języka. Dzięki piosence i wierszowi, istotnym komponentom kultury, studenci poznają także historię, zwyczaje i tradycje kraju, którego języka się uczą.
When the rhythmical parameters are abnormal (even the articulation is relatively correct) the speech understanding is much more difficult. Not the phoneme, but the rhythm and intonation are the guarantee of successful communication. The rhythm is the original property of poetry and music, they cannot exist without it. The use of songs and poems in classes with Polish students gives not only the opportunity to develop the tempo and the rhythm of speech, it is also an effective method to master suprasegmental language units. Through song and poetry, important components of culture, students will also learn the history, customs and traditions of the country whose language they learn.

The purpose of this study was to investigate intercultural sensitivity among nursing students in Turkey. This study is a cross-sectional study. It was conducted with nursing students at a university in Ankara. The sample comprised 152 nursing students at the university. This study was carried out between May 2013 and June 2013. Data were collected using an Interview Questionnaire and Intercultural Sensitivity Scale. The data were analysed using frequency, independent t-test and one-way ANOVA. The study found out that the nursing students had higher scores of cultural sensitivity (88.92 ± 12.20). It was found that senior year students, the students who speak a foreign language and the students who had chosen the school willingly had higher scores of cultural sensibility (p < 0.05). The study found that the nursing students had higher scores of cultural sensivility. To increase intercultural sensitivity of nursing students it is recommended that the maintenance strategies and the concept of intercultural sensitivity should be integrated in the curriculum of nursing education and postgraduate training programs.

The increasingly diversified global workplace poses challenges to communication between different culture representatives. The study presents an assessment of the achievements and problems of intercultural pedagogy as an important educational (sub)discipline, which has been developing intensively in Poland – particularly since the 1990s. Against the background of a crisis of multicultural education, a new suggestion was presented aimed at overcoming its drawbacks in the form of the theoretical assumptions and practical solutions of intercultural education. Mowa nienawiści i polityka tożsamości. Perspektywa komunikowania między kulturowego Mowa nienawiści na stałe wpisała się we współczesny dyskurs polityczny. Co więcej, doprowadziła do zmiany samej struktury komunikowania. Dzięki mediom społecznościowym, mowa nienawiści przedostała się do sfery publicznej, gdzie łączy użytkowników za pośrednictwem różnego rodzaju akcji społecznościowych, co z kolei pozwala jej na konstruowanie i dekonstruowanie tożsamości. W konsekwencji, mowa nienawiści podważa same fundamenty społeczeństwa wielokulturowego. Tymczasem, powodzenie takiego społeczeństwa zależy od jego zdolności do zaangażowania po-szczególnych jednostek do dialogu międzykulturowego. Z kolei mowa nienawiści wyrzuca poza nawias społeczeństwa wszystkie głosy sprzeciwu, pogłębiając tym samym polityczną polaryzację. Artykuł przedstawia zatem innowacyjną i szeroką analizę mowy nienawiści z perspektywy komunikowania międzykulturowego. Posiłkując się dostępnymi badaniami i literaturą przedmiotu, Autor stawia tezę, iż mowa nienawiści, jako komunikacyjny fenomen, nie tylko zakłóca dialog międzykulturowy, ale także prowadzi do dezintegracji społeczeństwa wielokulturowego.

Development and geographical expansion of multinational corporations makes it more complex and more often we are dealing with cultural diversity within teams of employees. Mutual cooperation of foreigners and local staff raises many intercultural interactions, both negative and positive. The purpose of this article is to identify the benefits and weaknesses arising from intercultural interactions between foreigners and local staff in the German subsidiary operating in Poland. The research procedure was a case study and a method was 12 structured interviews with Polish managers. Research problems concerned the general perception of Polish managers in relation to cooperation with foreigners. The respondents indicated the benefits and problems of this cooperation, as well as practical guidance (advice) to improve these interactions. This case study enriched the empirical achievements in the area of the new trend in management sciences, which is the positive organizational scholarship (POS).

The European project entitled "Integrating adults and the elderly towards a Europe of knowledge", coordinated by the University of Almería, within the actions of "Grundtvig learning partnerships for adult education", has carried out the assessment of an educational program for people over 55 years in five countries. The aim of the learning partnership was “to encourage the development of innovative practices in education of older people and their transfer between countries”. Methods: Some of the following teaching tools and methods were used to promote intercultural communication skills: simulation activities, followed by reflective discussion and/or written analysis; guided group activities; local visits to contact people from other countries; ethnographic projects. Results: The courses provide knowledge and understanding about culture, institutions and different ways of life in diverse communities, and encourage reflection about their own cultural behaviour, practices and attitudes, as well as those of others. Old people enhance communication in their community, by means of meetings in which they talk about their common concerns. This can help the elderly to overcome problems and reduce feelings of loneliness. The courses also help old people acquire new knowledge and skills in a rapidly changing world. Conclusions: Participants’ motivation increased as the sessions were developed, since the contents of the classes agreed with their own interests, with a constant widening of knowledge. Everybody had an active role in the discussions. This training has shown some aspects about ageing, such as the removal of the image of  the idle retired person; at the same time it promotes active retirement, intergenerational relationships and independence, and improves social and personal skills

The author of foregoing article has a thesis that a conception of interculturality in the modern world determines new standards in politics, economy and especially in teaching foreign languages. The starting point of the discussion is the explanation of key words: culture, interculturality, intercultural teaching, intercultural competence. The author explains the specificity of intercultural teaching during the foreign language classes and regards the intercultural competence as an essential requirement for effective communication with representatives of other cultures. She considers referring to our own model of interpretation to understand a statement as one of the most important reasons of misunderstanding in intercultural communication. To avoid this misunderstanding while working on vocabulary, one should underline the differences and similarities between cultures.

W artykule zamierzam skoncentrować się na edukacji międzykulturowej jako przedmiocie akademickim w Polsce - w kontekście nabywania nowych kompetencji przez młodzież. Po pierwsze, analizie poddałam programy zajęć pod kątem oczekiwanych efektów uczenia się: wiedzy, umiejętności i kompetencji międzykulturowych, które studenci powinni zdobyć podczas kursu. Uwzględniłam zakres tematów poruszanych podczas kursu, liczbę godzin, a także formę zajęć oferowanych na uniwersyteckich kierunkach pedagogicznych w Polsce. Chciałabym również podzielić się własnymi doświadczeniami zebranymi podczas pracy ze studentami w związku z prowadzonym przeze mnie przedmiotem z zakresu edukacji międzykulturowej na wydziale pedagogicznym. W tekście przedstawię studenckie wizje edukacji międzykulturowej - na podstawie stworzonych przez nich scenariuszy zajęć dla dzieci. Moim zdaniem projekty te mogą odsłonić poziom wiedzy studentów na temat różnorodności kulturowej, kompetencje do przyszłej pracy w zróżnicowanych kulturowo środowiskach, a także ich podejście do edukacji międzykulturowej na poziomie szkolnictwa wyższego.
In the paper I intend to focus on intercultural education as an academic subject in Poland in the context of acquiring new competences by young people. Firstly, the syllabus of classes will be a subject to analysis in terms of their expected learning outcomes: the knowledge, skills and intercultural competencies to be acquired by students during the course. The considered aspects will include the scope of subjects addressed during the course, the number of hours, as well as the forms of study that offer this type of higher education in Poland. I would also like to share my own experiences collected while working with students on subjects associated with intercultural education, which I have been teaching at a pedagogical faculty. Among other things, I will present their visions of what intercultural education means to them - based on their own scenarios of classes for children. In my opinion, the projects can show the level of student’s knowledge on cultural diversity, their competencies related to future work in culturally diverse environments and their approach to intercultural education at the level of higher education.

Studies on the patterns of marital selection began in the 1920s, and since then researchers have identified a set of variables that should be taken into account in marriage selection research. In this study the following variables are considered: age, nationality, race, social class, environmental background, attitude to faith, religion, attitude to religious practices, education, current employment status, previous marital status, number of marriages, number of children from previous marriages, and financial situation before the present marriage. One hundred and twelve Polish women who married foreigners from non-European cultures took part in the study. Their husbands were representatives of African, Asian and Australian countries; none of them came from Europe or the Americas.The aim of the study is to examine marital selection among intercultural marriages and to provide new knowledge on the subject. In connection with the adopted topic, the purpose of the research and the analysis of the literature on the subject, the main problem of the research was formulated as follows: what are the similarities and differences in marital selection in intercultural marriages?The study revealed that, in most cases, marital selection among the couples who participated in the study followed a similar social biography: the spouses were of a similar age (79.5%) and shared race (90.1%), social class (74.1%), environmental background (61.6%), education (56.2%), attitude to faith (92.8%), and their financial situation before the present marriage (65.2%). The results obtained confirmed Farle’s theory, in which he distinguished three main factors influencing the frequency of intercultural marriages: military service, higher education and place of residence. The analysis of the data indicates that the majority of the respondents lived in big cities (57.1%), and higher education was the most common level of education among both the respondents (60.7%) and their husbands (41.1%).

Opis:

Studies on the patterns of marital selection began in the 1920s, and since then researchers have identified a set of variables that should be taken into account in marriage selection research. In this study the following variables are considered: age, nationality, race, social class, environmental background, attitude to faith, religion, attitude to religious practices, education, current employment status, previous marital status, number of marriages, number of children from previous marriages, and financial situation before the present marriage. One hundred and twelve Polish women who married foreigners from non-European cultures took part in the study. Their husbands were representatives of African, Asian and Australian countries; none of them came from Europe or the Americas. The aim of the study is to examine marital selection among intercultural marriages and to provide new knowledge on the subject. In connection with the adopted topic, the purpose of the research and the analysis of the literature on the subject, the main problem of the research was formulated as follows: what are the similarities and differences in marital selection in intercultural marriages? The study revealed that, in most cases, marital selection among the couples who participated in the study followed a similar social biography: the spouses were of a similar age (79.5%) and shared race (90.1%), social class (74.1%), environmental background (61.6%), education (56.2%), attitude to faith (92.8%), and their financial situation before the present marriage (65.2%). The results obtained confirmed Farle’s theory, in which he distinguished three main factors influencing the frequency of intercultural marriages: military service, higher education and place of residence. The analysis of the data indicates that the majority of the respondents lived in big cities (57.1%), and higher education was the most common level of education among both the respondents (60.7%) and their husbands (41.1%).

Opis:

The study investigates the linguistic and cultural experiences of Erasmus+ students from Portugal at the University of Ostrava in the Czech Republic. Special attention is paid to the chal- lenges encountered by the students in both communication and coping with cultural differences, as well as to their language needs, ways of communicating, attitudes towards the Czech culture, and the role of English in communication. The research tool was a questionnaire covering a number of questions related to the purpose of the study. As the results show, while the intercultural experience was generally enriching and the participants appreciated some interesting aspects of the Czech culture, they were particularly disappointed by the limited number of Czechs able to speak English and some of the academic teachers’ low levels of language proficiency in English. In fact, this is not limited to the lack of language skills, as communication problems can also lead to the perception of the interlocutor as unpleasant and unhelpful.

W artykule poddałyśmy analizom kwestie dotyczące możliwości kształtowania kompetencji międzykulturowych u uczniów realizujących proces edukacji wczesnoszkolnej. Za pomocny uznałyśmy przegląd aktualnych teorii i dobrych praktyk w odniesieniu do obszaru edukacji międzykulturowej oraz wielokulturowej. W podjętych rozważaniach uwzględniłyśmy zapis podstawy programowej odnoszącej się do tych dzieci, które rozpoczną edukację we wrześniu 2017 roku. Zauważalny staje się w niej brak zapisu dotyczącego zagadnienia różnorodności kulturowej, co wydaje się tworzyć wrażenie pewnej „niewidoczności” tej kwestii. Takie ujęcie może generować ograniczenia w kształtowaniu warunków dla poznawania „inności” i „Innych” w toku codziennych sytuacji edukacyjnych. W tekście odniosłyśmy się zarówno do obecnych, jak i często nieobecnych (a zalecanych) rozwiązań pozwalających uczniom na pomyślne funkcjonowanie we współczesnym, zróżnicowanym świecie. Zwróciłyśmy uwagę na to, że włączaniu jakichkolwiek działań edukacyjnych powinno towarzyszyć krytyczne myślenie i szacunek dla różnych perspektyw ponad podziałami kulturowymi. W artykule ujęliśmy przykłady „dobrych praktyk”, takich jak: storytelling, włączenie do oddziaływań edukacyjnych międzykulturowych historii nauczycieli i uczniów oraz zastosowanie bajek międzykulturowych. Za interesujące poznawczo można również uznać wykorzystanie w toku zajęć tzw. Persona Dolls i nadanie szczególnej wagi procesom bezprzemocowej komunikacji rozgrywającej się między szkołą a rodziną.
The article analyzes the possibilities of creating intercultural competences in primary school students. In this reflection we would like to present an overview of the aspects of current theory and best practice in the area of intercultural education and multicultural. We consider also the curriculum for schools and those children who start early school education in September 2017. We saw that the lack of the information about cultural diversity seems to create a barrier to continue and create conditions for learning about its characteristics in the course of everyday learning situations. Finally, we show present and absent (and recommended) solutions that enable students to successfully function in a “diverse world”. We consider the fact that switching any educational activities should be accompanied by critical thinking and respect for different perspectives across cultures. In this article we reveal some practices such as storytelling, the inclusion of educational intercultural history for teachers and students, and the intercultural use of fairy tales during lessons called: Persona Dolls and special communication without violence between school and the family.

Celem artykułu jest ukazanie wartości pracy w grupach wielokulturowych dla tworzenia zróżnicowanego i korzystnego wychowawczo środowiska edukacyjnego. Współczesna sytuacja migracyjna stanowi wyzwanie dla polskiej szkoły z reguły monokulturowej. Najważniejsze obecnie jest wyposażenie nauczycieli w umiejętności, które pozwolą im rozpoznać i kształtować własne postawy wobec zróżnicowania kulturowego oraz wykorzystać wychowawczo i dydaktycznie pracę w wielokulturowych zespołach. Podstawę mogą stanowić praktyki edukacyjne stosowane w klasach, w których uczą się dzieci romskie. Zdobyte doświadczenia mogą posłużyć do modyfikowania programów studiów nauczycielskich i tworzenia modeli pracy w wielokulturowym środowisku.
The aim of the article is to show the value of work in multicultural groups to create a diverse and beneficial educational learning environment. The contemporary situation of migration is a challenge for Polish, usually monocultural schools. The most important task is now to equip teachers with the skills that will enable them to recognize and develop their own strategies towards cultural diversity and take advantage of educational and didactic work in multicultural teams. The basis for these actions may be educational practices in classes attended by Roma children. The experience gained during these practices can be used to modify university teacher training and to model work in a multicultural environment.

Opis:

The aim of the study was to establish the level of cultural sensitivity of Polish, Ukrainian and Belarusian students, as well as characterize the differences in this respect between these groups. Cultural sensitivity is understood here as an indicator of intercultural communicative ability, which manifests itself in willingness to engage in interactions with people of different cultures. The study was conducted using a diagnostic poll with the research tool Intercultural Sensitivity Scale developed by G.M Chen and J.W. Starosta. Another methods employed included the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and LSD test. The subjects of the study were 293 students of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University and Vincent Pol University in Lublin, 91 of whom were Polish, the same number of Ukrainians and 101 Belarusians. The research showed that the Ukrainian students are the most willing to engage in conversation with a person of different culture, obtaining average and high results for all factors. The lowest results, in turn, belong to the Poles, whose results were all average. Statistical analyses showed that the differences are statistically significant for 4 out of 5 examined dimensions of sensitivity. The students from Ukraine turned out to be the most diversifying group.

Kompetencje interkulturowe wymieniane są coraz częściej, obok kompetencji lingwistycznych i komunikacyjnych, jako jeden z głównych celów kształcenia językowego. Współczesne rozumienie akwizycji języka obcego uwzględnia bowiem nie tylko aspekty formalne nauki języka ale również kwestie pedagogiczne odnoszące się do zakończonej sukcesem komunikacji przebiegającej na styku co najmniej dwóch kultur. Artykuł powstał w ramach projektu M nansowanego przez Fundację Rozwoju Systemu Edukacji: Szkolenie dla polskich asystentów letnich obozów realizowanych w ramach TEIP Fundacji Kościuszkowskiej i prezentuje teoretyczne podstawy i sposoby dydaktycznej realizacji koncepcji kształtowania wrażliwości interkulturowej i językowej młodzieży powyżej 18 roku życia. Teaching English in Poland Program (TEIP) jest prowadzony od 1991 roku przez Fundację Kościuszkowską. Program ten daje unikalną możliwość budowania relacji pomiędzy nauczycielami i wolontariuszami oraz uczniami z Polski i Stanów Zjednoczonych Ameryki Północnej, ale też stanowi doskonałą przestrzeń wzmacniania wrażliwości i empatii interkulturowej.
Intercultural competence is listed more and more commonly, along with language and communication competences, as one of main goals of language education. Why are intercultural competences a vital resource for the contemporary human? During enculturation and socialization processes we learn not only how to behave, but also how to perceive and comprehend the conduct of others. These rules of perception and interpretation are sort of M lters, through which a person looks at the world, interprets it and, basing on these interpretations, forms attitudes and undertakes actions. Given the importance of this resource, comprising elements of intercultural education might be seen as a significant element of foreign language teaching and learning. The article focuses on the theoretical framework and practical features of Teaching English in Poland Program (TEIP), which has been established as a response to the need of developing intercultural competences among children and adolescents under the age of 18. The programme has been manager by The Kosciuszko Foundation since 1991. Teaching English during camps in Poland, linked with experiencing cultural differences between Polish teachers and students and voluntary teachers from the United States brings children and adolescents, as well as Polish teachers, a chance to thrive crucial social skills and competences such as better understanding of other person when trying to empathize and conceive their situation as the „Other”, as well as to recognize similarities and differences to one’s own culture. Intercultural education accompanying TEIP demands not only to provide knowledge and skills about society and culture in which the language to be acquired is used, but also to develop competences which are essential to gain adequate, open mindset towards „otherness” and „differences”.

The objective of this case study is to investigate the role of student mobility in the development of intercultural communicative competence in university students. In order to indicate the changes in the participants, especially about their attitudes towards Spanish culture, Spaniards and their stereotypes, an interpretative research with an ethnographic approach has been carried out, namely, we have interviewed several students of Hispanic Philology from the University of Ljubljana (level C1 of Spanish), who had spent at least one semester with the Erasmus scholarship studying in Spain. The article does not pretend to achieve a statistical generalization due to its limited sample, however it can be useful as a preliminary study.

Opis:

In the first part of the article, the notion of competence was defined, highlighting its complex nature and key features. Subsequently, four main groups of teacher’s competences were identified and described. In the second part, there are described the intercultural competences and explained the differences between the teacher’s intercultural competences and the competences for teaching intercultural education.
W pierwszej części artykułu zdefiniowano pojęcie kompetencji, zwracając uwagę na jego złożoną naturę i kluczowe właściwości, a następnie wyodrębniono i opisano cztery główne grupy kompetencji nauczyciela. W drugiej części scharakteryzowano kompetencje międzykulturowe oraz wyjaśniono różnice między kompetencjami międzykulturowymi nauczyciela a kompetencjami do nauczania edukacji międzykulturowej.

Today, a characteristic feature of life is contact (direct or via media) with “otherness” and the “Other” – ethnically, religiously, nationally. The issue of the links between multiculturalism and the media is essential for education, but it does not seem to be sufficiently taken into account in the formal education of teachers. Therefore, the article addressed the issue of shaping media competences and intercultural competences of teachers, indicating the need to include both these issues in an integral manner. It has become important to consider the dimensions of these competences – cognitive, pragmatic and emotional – as well as to show the issues that should be present in the education of teaching staff. This type of approach seems to meet the requirements relating to the dynamically forming “knowledge-based society and “multicultural society”.

Te year 2008 was named by the European Commission the Year of Intercultural Dialogue. Celebrations of the Year were intended to: respect and promote cultural diversity, support the idea of solidarity, ensure equal opportunity to the inhabitants of the EU, build partner relations with member EU countries and with the countries from outside the Community. Tis article is a short presentation of main events of the Year of Intercultural Dialogue in Poland. Tis paper draws attention to cultural pluralism and as to how cultural pluralism is implemented by the media. How the idea and the events of Year of Intercultural Dialogue were presented by media in Poland. Moreover, this paper analyzes how journalists contributed to promote cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue. Tis study is based on policy documents, reports of governments, NGO’s and international organizations, academic literature and content analyses of media in Poland.

W USA, Guo-Ming Chen i William J. Starosta opracowali narzędzia badawcze w postaci Skali Wrażliwości Międzykulturowej do pomiaru wrażliwości międzykulturowej jako głównego wymiaru kompetencji komunikacji międzykulturowej. W Niemczech Wolfgang Fritz, Antje Möllenberg oraz Guo-Ming Chen, na próbie 541 studentów potwierdzili jego trafność, rekomendując je dla populacji Europy Zachodniej. W artykule zaprezentowano polską wersję kwestionariusza do pomiaru wrażliwości międzykulturowej wraz z jego własnościami psychometrycznymi i wynikami analizy normalizacyjnej. Ponadto w opracowaniu przedstawiono podstawy teoretyczne kwestionariusza oraz jego budowę i zasady posługiwania się narzędziem. Polska wersja kwestionariusza (identycznie jak oryginalna) składa się z 24 pozycji testowych zawartych w obrębie pięciu podskal (α-Cronbacha 0,85) oraz spełnia wszystkie warunki tzw. dobroci psychometrycznej testu. Narzędzie pozwala w sposób szybki, trafny i rzetelny dokonywać pomiaru podstawowych czynników wrażliwości międzykulturowej, takich jak: Zaangażowanie w interakcję, Szacunek dla różnic kulturowych, Pewność w interakcji, Przyjemność z interakcji, Uwaga/Pilność w interakcji. Narzędzie może być stosowane przez naukowców i praktyków we wszystkich sytuacjach, w których mamy do czynienia z interakcją w środowiskach zróżnicowanych kulturowo (biznes, edukacja, turystyka itd.). Do artykułu załączono kwestionariusz wraz z kluczem, ułatwiającą praktykom analizę i interpretację uzyskanych wyników.
Guo-Ming Chen and William J. Starosta have invented a research tool to measure the level of intercultural sensitivity as a major dimension of intercultural communicative competence. The tool is known as The Model of Intercultural Sensitivity. Its accuracy was confirmed in Germany in a study conducted by Wolfgang Fritz, Antje Möllenberg oraz Guo-Ming Chen on a group of 541 students. As a result, the method was recommended for the Western European Societies. The article presents a Polish version of the questionnaire measuring intercultural sensitivity together with its psychometrical properties and the results of normalization analysis. What is more, the theoretical basis of the questionnaire, its structure and conditions of use are also described. The Polish version (just like the original) consists of 24 positions grouped into 5 sub-scales (Cronbach’s α 0,85) and meets all the requirements of the so-called psychometrical accuracy. The test allows one to quickly and precisely measure the basic elements of intercultural sensitivity such as: Engagement in interaction, Attention/Diligence in interaction. The tool can be used by scholars and practitioners in all situations that involve interaction in culturally diversified environments (business, education, tourism etc.) The article includes the questionnaire with the key, which shall make the analysis and interpretation of the results much easier.

The article bases on ethnographical field research made in intercultural environment of little Slovakian spa. The author choses a place where different social groups co-exist: spa clients, spa employees and residents of the spa village. The general question is how the local quality of this environment is perceived and what are the contents of this exact idea of local quality, but the text mostly reveals a few aspects of the field research experience, the role of anthropologist, problems with finding informants and possible ways of fitting into the rythm of live in the spa resort.

During the past decade the interest of scientists in multiculturalism has increased significantly, as the need for the development of intercultural competency has become more explicitly manifested in the work environment of organizations. In Lithuania the analysis of intercultural competency is still quite a new research area and is conducted intermittently, i.e. only certain aspects related to intercultural competency are analysed. This article analyses various scientific approaches to the phenomenon of interculturalism and tendencies of its manifestation in the organizational environment. The authors present an empirical research which involved nearly half a thousand respondents (N=464) from the capital public institutions and small municipalities of Lithuania employees who work primarily in the public sector. The survey questionnaire allows to assess skills of intercultural competency, the geography and frequency of intercultural communication, dimensions of competencies of employees in Lithuanian organizations, etc. and to establish the problems characteristic of the competency development. Based on the obtained data the authors of the article establish the problems characteristic of the development of intercultural competence in Lithuanian organizations and provide an overview of future perspectives.

The article discusses the processes of self-evaluation about intercultural communication competency of the individual. On the basis of gathered quantitative data, the author discusses a psychological level of understanding cultural difference and contextual influences in this regard. Three main perspectives were established when discussing intercultural communication competency of the individual. First, it is a social standard of multiculturalism. That perspective shows openness of individuals toward cultural plurality in the public life. Second is constructing community in the perspective of cultural plurality, and third is a sphere of skills needed for effective communication between individuals and groups when cultural difference is engaged.

Opis:

The text examines processes of intercultural communication applying the interactionist approach. Following the Ricoeur’s concept of discourse and the Berger’s expectation states theory, the most significant aspect of the above mentioned communication are negotiations of reality aiming to define the meaning and course of a situation and interaction. Both the dynamics and contents of social actors’ expectation result from their culturally determined perception and communication codes as well as their personal features (such as intercultural experience, motivational factors, social competences and so on). A significant role has to be ascribed, however, to the specificity of social and physical space of communication creating primary conditions for an interaction. The proposed thesis is being discussed in the context of several cases of intercultural communication placed in various kinds of social spaces.

The article describes the experiences of Bydgoszcz teachers working in culturally diverse schools in the first period of the war in Ukraine (from February 24 to April 22, 2022). The basis of the article is the analysis of the statements provided by the participants of the conference “A Ukrainian student in the Polish education system. How to help teachers create a multicultural learning environment?” organized at the Kazimierz Wielki University, by its Department of Didactics and Studies on Culture of Education and the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Centre for Teacher Education in Bydgoszcz. The statements presented in the article concern the experience of eighty teachers from Bydgoszcz schools of various levels as well as academics, doctoral students and students working in educational institutions. The article is a contribution to the methodical trend of intercultural pedagogy. It contains practical tips on the work of teachers in culturally diverse classes, developed on the basis of current statements provided by people taking care of refugees from Ukraine.
W artykule zostały opisane doświadczenia bydgoskich nauczycieli pracujących w szkołach różnorodnych kulturowo w pierwszym okresie wojny w Ukrainie (od 24 lutego do 22 kwietnia 2022 roku). Jego podstawę stanowi analiza wypowiedzi uczestników konferencji „Ukraiński uczeń w polskim systemie edukacji. Jak pomóc nauczycielom tworzyć wielokulturowe środowisko uczenia się?” zorganizowanej w Uniwersytecie Kazimierza Wielkiego (UKW), przez Katedrę Dydaktyki i Studiów nad Kulturą Edukacji UKW oraz Kujawsko-Pomorskie Centrum Edukacji Nauczycieli w Bydgoszczy. Dotyczą one doświadczeń z pracy w instytucjach edukacyjnych i opiekuńczo-wychowawczych 80 nauczycieli z bydgoskich szkół różnego stopnia oraz pracowników naukowych, doktorantów i studentów UKW. Artykuł stanowi przyczynek do metodycznego nurtu pedagogiki międzykulturowej. Zawiera praktyczne wskazówki dotyczące pracy nauczycieli w klasach różnorodnych kulturowo, opracowane na podstawie aktualnych wypowiedzi osób opiekujących się uchodźcami z Ukrainy. Na podstawie analizy wypowiedzi nauczycieli, na potrzeby artykułu zostało opracowane zestawienie wątków tematycznych dotyczących ich trudności w pracy w szkołach różnorodnych kulturowo. Wprawdzie nawiązują one wyłącznie do sytuacji w szkołach bydgoskich, lecz porównując je z podobnymi wypowiedziami zamieszczanymi wówczas między innymi w grupach dyskusyjnych dla nauczycieli i forach internetowych, można założyć występowanie w nich tożsamych wątków, a wskazówki metodyczne polecić nauczycielom pracującym w szkołach różnorodnych kulturowo w innych miejscowościach.

Opis:

The Scout and Polish Scouting movement is characterized by the possibility of meeting and cooperation of people from different backgrounds and cultures. A natural thing for this social movement is daily confrontation with Otherness/ Alienness in conditions of cultural diversity and undertaking various forms of educational activity based on the idea of interculturalism. The study presents some partial results of a research project devoted to the content referring to the idea of interculturalism and education in the conditions of cultural diversity, present in the program studies of the scouting movement. These studies contribute to the historical trend of intercultural pedagogy and the history of education in the context of ideological assumptions and activities of children and youth organizations. The article contains a description of the applied conceptual categories and the characteristics of the precursors and the contemporary scouting movement. In a chronological order, it presents a selection of examples of the content of scouting program studies that are related to the idea of interculturalism and intercultural education.
Ruch skautowy i harcerski charakteryzuje możliwość spotkania i współpracy osób wywodzących się z różnych środowisk i kultur. Naturalną rzeczą jest w nim codzienna konfrontacja z Innością/Obcością w warunkach zróżnicowania kulturowego oraz podejmowanie różnych form aktywności edukacyjnej opartej na idei międzykulturowości. Od chwili powstania swej organizacji skauci i harcerze realizowali zadania wpisujące się we współczesne rozumienie edukacji międzykulturowej, oparte na ogólnych zasadach Prawa skautowego, które zakładają szacunek do innych i współpracę z nimi w duchu braterstwa, solidarności i tolerancji. W komunikacie z badań zostały przedstawione cząstkowe wyniki realizacji projektu badawczego poświęconego treściom nawiązującym do idei międzykulturowości oraz edukacji w warunkach zróżnicowania kulturowego, występującym w opracowaniach programowych ruchu skautowego i harcerskiego. Badania te stanowią przyczynek do historycznego nurtu pedagogiki międzykulturowej oraz historii wychowania w kontekście założeń ideowych i działalności organizacji dzieci i młodzieży. Artykuł zawiera opis wykorzystanych kategorii pojęciowych, charakterystykę prekursorów oraz współczesnego ruchu skautowego i harcerskiego. W układzie chronologicznym został w nim przedstawiony wybór przykładów treści skautowych i harcerskich opracowań programowych, które wiążą się z ideą międzykulturowości i edukacji międzykulturowej.

Opis:

The study approaches the new curriculum documents for pre-university education in the Republic of Moldova from the intercultural education perspective. In the 2019-2020 school year, the schools in the country are carrying out the education process based on a new curriculum, which represents the result of the third reform after the country's independence in 1992. The author analyses the correspondence of the curriculum texts to the stipulations of the Education Code, and the extent to which they respond to the demands in the development of the students’ intercultural competence. The findings of the study reveal that the texts are focused not only on the promotion of the national values and identity, but are open, at the same time, to the intercultural education and to the dialogue with representatives of different cultures in the multicultural divided society. Literature and policy review supplemented by discourse analysis are the main qualitative methods applied.

Artykuł koncentruje się na prezentacji założeń podejścia międzykulturowego w oparciu o przykład konferencji CICA. W przedstawionym tekście dokonano przeglądu literatury przedmiotu – umiejętności międzykulturowych – ich założeń, procedur oraz znaczenia. Podano także praktyczne przykłady wykorzystania tego podejścia. W pierwszej części artykułu opisano raport i roboczą definicję kompetencji międzykulturowych oraz zaprezentowano międzykulturowe podejście oparte na pracach Benneta, Deardorff i Heywarda. Na podstawie zilustrowanych ram kompetencji międzykulturowych, przedstawiono kryteria kompetencji międzykulturowych (ICC), które muszą być spełnione przy tworzeniu środowiska wspierającego ich rozwój. Przykłady i jasne kryteria mogą być pomocne przy tworzeniu kolejnych wydarzeń społecznych, konferencji czy szkoleń, bowiem tylko realne stosowanie założeń ICC wspomaga dialog międzykulturowy
The article focuses on the presentation of the assumptions of an intercultural approach based on the example of the CICA conference. The presented text reviews the subject literature – intercultural skills – their assumptions, procedures and meanings. Practical examples of using this approach are also given. The first part of the article describes the report and the working definition of intercultural competences and presents an intercultural approach based on the works of Bennet, Deardorff and Heyward. Based on the illustrated intercultural competence framework, the criteria for intercultural competences (ICC) are set out, which must be met when creating an environment that supports their development. Examples and clear criteria may be helpful in the creation of further social events, conferences or trainings, because only the real application of the ICC assumptions supports intercultural dialogue.

Assumptions and problems of the Project are presented in this text. The history of multicultural territory, which is located The on the borderland of jointed and transitional Eastern and Western Christianity and national groups: Polish, Belarusian, Lithuanian and Ukrainian, were presented by the author. Then the attention was drawn to the perspectives of diagnoses of multiculturalism in the context of the acquisition of competence for intercultural communication. The need for the analyses of the multiculturalism in several dimensions was emphasized and considered as a process. In this context, the need to diagnose multicultural and intercultural regions population was identified and justified. The result highlights the need to continue this type of the research.

The study was undertaken in an attempt to prove the relationship between the level of acquiring the most important intercultural competences and the education of the persons examined. A group of 123 Poles working in South West England was examined for that purpose. The study was conducted using the survey method with the questionnaire technique and a self-constructed research tool. Research has shown that the level of acquisition of the analyzed specific and key intercultural competences depends on the level of education of the surveyed Poles on labour emigration in England. The highest, good level of acquisition of the analyzed competences, was demonstrated by those with higher and secondary education. The lowest by those with basic education. There is a need for intercultural education of all participants involved in the educational process, regardless of his/her level (higher, average, professional). The programs of all subjects should include the effects of education in the field of soft skills, i.e. social, intercultural. As the research shows, the vast majority of competences determining the achievement of above-average work performance are just of a similar nature to such competences. Such content can be introduced within a stand-alone subject or over the course of realizing other subjects.
Celem badań była próba wykazania zależności między poziomem przyswojenia najważniejszych kompetencji międzykulturowych a wykształceniem badanych osób. Badaniami objęto 123 Polaków pracujących w południowo-zachodniej Anglii. Badania przeprowadzono metodą sondażu z zastosowaniem techniki ankietowej oraz narzędzia badawczego własnej konstrukcji. Jak wykazały badania, poziom przyswojenia analizowanych szczegółowych oraz węzłowych kompetencji międzykulturowych jest uzależniony od rodzaju wykształcenia badanych. Najwyższym poziomem przyswojenia analizowanych kompetencji wykazali się badani z wykształceniem wyższym i średnim. Najniższym zaś, badani z wykształceniem zasadniczym. Istnieje konieczność edukacji międzykulturowej wszystkich uczestników badania, niezależnie od poziomu ich wykształcenia (wyższe, średnie, zawodowe). W programach wszystkich przedmiotów realizowanych w ramach takiej edukacji powinny znaleźć się szkolenia z zakresu kompetencji miękkich, czyli społecznych, międzykulturowych. Bowiem, jak wykazują badania, zdecydowana większość kompetencji determinujących osiąganie ponadprzeciętnych efektów w pracy ma właśnie taki charakter. Treści tego typu można wprowadzać w ramach samodzielnego przedmiotu albo mogą stanowić część programów innych przedmiotów.

Opis:

The aim of this article is to discuss the place and role of the intercultural encounter (IE) in communication and education, including in foreign language teaching. Firstly, I present the IE as a communicative event and define it using terms developed by ethnographers of speech (communication). Secondly, I discuss the concepts contained in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Companion Volume with New Descriptors (CEFR 2018) relating to the mediation of text, concepts, and communication, and present the original definition of mediation in intercultural contacts. That section emphasises that mediation does not only act as an intermediary facilitating the course of a communication event but also as an “understanding interview with oneself.” Next, I discuss theoretical concepts related to the IE, I describe it as a tool used in teaching and intercultural education, and I present a description of the IE by a student of the Teaching Polish as a Foreign/Second Language course at the University of Lodz. Finally, I analyse an example description of an IE and present preliminary conclusions on how to use IE descriptions in various educational contexts.
Celem niniejszego artykułu jest ukazanie miejsca i roli spotkania interkulturowego (SI) w komunikacji oraz edukacji, także w praktyce glottodydaktycznej. W części 1. pracy przedstawiono SI jako zdarzenie komunikacyjne i zdefiniowano je z użyciem pojęć stosowanych przez etnografów mowy (komunikacji). W części 2. omówiono koncepcje zawarte w Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Companion Volume with New Descriptors (CEFR 2018) związane z mediacją tekstu, pojęć i komunikacji oraz zaprezentowano autorską definicję mediacji, odnoszącą się do kontaktów międzykulturowych. Zaakcentowano w niej, że mediacja polega także na prowadzeniu „wywiadu rozumiejącego z samym sobą”, nie tylko na występowaniu w roli pośrednika ułatwiającego przebieg danego epizodu komunikacyjnego. W części 3. omówiono pojęcia teoretyczne odnoszące się do SI, scharakteryzowano je jako narzędzie stosowane w pedagogice i edukacji interkulturowej, a następnie zaprezentowano wybrany opis SI autorstwa studentki specjalizacji Nauczanie Języka Polskiego jako Obcego/Drugiego Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego. W części czwartej przeanalizowano przykładowy opis SI oraz przedstawiono wstępne wnioski na temat sposobów wykorzystania opisów SI w różnorodnych kontekstach edukacyjnych.

Polish emigrants who follow their professional ambitions within multicultural labor market in most cases work not in line with their learnt professions. Despite this fact they are satisfied with their jobs and feel they have achieved professional success. Thus, the question arises, what is the key to their very positive self-esteem of professional achievement or whether they pursue their career paths without using the learnt so-called hard competencies. It remains to believe that the soft competencies of the intercultural competences group are the main cause of this state of affairs. The aim of this study was to establish a link between intercultural competences and professional success of Polish workers in England. The study involved 123 people working in the South-West of England. Studies have shown that only in two types of competences: – competence of communication and competence of emotional intelligence – the test-takers who achieved significantly higher level of results were the ones who believed they achieved professional success. In other cases, the difference was not seen. Therefore, it can be concluded that the high level of ownership of competences such as communication competence and emotional intelligence is a specific determinant of career success abroad.
Polscy emigranci zarobkowi, realizując swoje ambicje zawodowe na wielokulturowym rynku pracy, często pracują niezgodnie z wyuczonym zawodem. Mimo to są zadowoleni ze swojej pracy i w większości uważają, że osiągnęli sukces zawodowy. Zatem rodzi się pytanie, co jest kluczem do ich bardzo pozytywnej samooceny osiągnięć zawodowych, jeżeli realizują swoje ścieżki zawodowe, nie wykorzystując wyuczonych kompetencji (tzw. twardych). Pozostaje sądzić, że to miękkie kompetencje z grupy kompetencji międzykulturowych są głównym sprawcą tego stanu rzeczy. Celem przeprowadzonych badań była próba ustalenia związku między kompetencjami międzykulturowymi a sukcesem zawodowym polskich pracowników w Anglii. Badaniami objęto 123 osoby pracujące w południowo-zachodniej Anglii. Badania wykazały, że tylko w dwóch rodzajach kompetencji (tj. Kompetencji komunikowania się oraz Inteligencji emocjonalnej) wyniki na poziomie istotnie wyższym uzyskały osoby badane, które uważały, że osiągnęły sukces zawodowy. W pozostałych przypadkach różnic takich nie odnotowano. Można uznać, że wysoki poziom przyswojenia takich kompetencji, jak Kompetencja komunikowania się oraz Inteligencja emocjonalna, jest swoistą determinantą sukcesu zawodowego na obczyźnie.

“Before filling in the application form, please read carefully these instructions.” Forms, Intercultural Communication and Transnational Dutch Studies Almost everyone is familiar with various types of formal forms. The language as well as the structure of such texts differ, however, from the standards and rules of every-day communication, which, in consequence, may lead to many problems. Reading the instructions to the form may not always constitute great help or assistance. It is very common that people, who are obliged to fill in the particular form, come across different terms or sophisticated grammatical structures they do not know or at least do not fully comprehend. Let us add to all these problem a notion of a foreign language, and as a consequence, a foreign culture for which the form is prepared, we may be facing an insurmountable barrier – both linguistic and cultural. This is a matter which, nowadays, modern philologists have to face. Particular intercultural problems or diffi culties which may additionally constrain the communication should also be overcome. The first part of the article expounds upon some of the problems that people, who have to fill in the Dutch forms, may encounter. The second part of the article discusses how the official forms may be introduced to the educational curriculum as a didactic means that helps in the process of both language teaching and learning.

Previous research suggests that teachers’ behaviour is influenced by educational beliefs and attitudes. This article focuses on two explorative studies among 99 and 18 physical education teachers, and aims to find out if educational beliefs and acculturation attitudes influence teachers’ willingness and behaviour to promote students’ intercultural competence through physical education lessons. The research design is based on a mixed-method approach. By interlocking quantitative and qualitative data, a mismatch between the expressed willingness and the real behaviour is uncovered. Educational beliefs influence the willingness but not the behaviour, whereas acculturation attitudes do not have any significant influence on the expressed willingness or on the behaviour. The impact depends on the accessibility of the namely constructs that is attained by reflection. Therefore, teacher education must be more than the conveyance of knowledge and techniques but provides teachers with strategies to reflect on their belief systems and their implication on teaching.

The Erasmus Programme was officially introduced in 1987 despite the discontent of some member states which had their own solutions in the field of educational exchange. Instead, the new programme was supposed to achieve certain far- reaching goals which exceeded the interests of particular countries. Achieving the goals of the program involved some difficulties because the process initiated by the student exchange program last several years and should be consistent with changes taking place at that time in the field of education. Furthermore, the overall objectives should harmonize with the interests of individual institutions and, above all, the plans of individual students. This study analysed the experiences of 21 Polish students who spent their Erasmus scholarship in Portugal. While the authors concentrated on the specifics of this given location, it did not constitute their only point of attention. The authors analyzed the students’ expectations, comparing them later with their evaluation of the benefits that emerged from their stay. The main question was whether the effects noted by the students corresponded with the intentions of the creators of the programme. They proved to be quite consistent, with some exceptions such as the opportunity to participate in classes in languages other than Portuguese.

The multicultural world has made intercultural teaching necessary. It should focus on students’ ability to comprehend quickly and accurately, and then act appropriately and effectively in a culturally complex environment in order to achieve the desired goal. Intercultural competence is important for successful communication across cultures, and so is critical thinking since the two, if they are not “parallel” (Bennett, 2013), at least overlap (Deardorff, 2009). This article tries to shed light on the linkage between intercultural and critical thinking skills and reports on the findings of research done on whether and to what extent EFL textbooks used in Polish schools contribute to fostering critical thinking skills in students. The study analyzed the cultural content of 20 coursebooks to check whether they go beyond merely depicting the target culture, or various foreign cultures, and involve students in practicing critical thinking, that is, prompt them to explore intercultural encounters and processes, and scrutinize how diverse cultures influence their own understanding of reality. The research revealed an insignificant and limited capacity of the textbooks to develop students’ critical thinking.

The aim of the study was to determine the importance of education in the formation of social distance of Polish emigrants towards peoples of other nationalities such as: Jews, Russians, English, Pakistani, Arabs, and Japanese. The study involved 262 people, including 137 Polish immigrants in England and 125 citizens of England as the host country. An adapted version of the E. Bogardus scale was used to measure social distance. The analyses performed show that the attitude of Polish emigrants towards people of other nationalities differed according to the level of education of the Poles surveyed. Only in the respondents’ attitude to Jews the level of education was not a differentiating factor. In all other cases, statistically significant differences were observed. British respondents generally declared a positive attitude towards people of other nationalities. Their level of distancing was rather homogeneous and more favorable, not dependent on their level of education.

The interethnic (multicultural) as well as intercultural competencies are especially important from several aspects: firstly, as a result of the need to overcome stereotypes and prejudices still present in our society, and secondly, to develop values in children, and especially empathy in students.

Opis:

Amulticultural society, moving from a reaction to differentiation to conscious cognition, understanding, dialogue, negotiation as well as cooperation and collaboration, creates multiculturalism. Relationships between representatives of various social and cultural environments as well as national, ethnic or religious groups are treated as a manifestation of the disappearance of social distance and one of the best indicators of integration. London’s multicultural environment, in which there is a clear tendency to collectively integrate cultural identity, enables the creation of intercultural relationships with their own cultural identity. This phenomenon includes various strategies of the acculturation process and mutual adaptation of people from different countries, cultures, religions and speaking different languages. The multicultural identity of mixed relationships is determined, interalia, by the obligations of marriage resulting from the fulfilment of marital roles and compliance with the marital identity. Identity sets internal boundaries between spouses and regulates contacts with family and friends in the family, local, neighbourhood, and global environment.

Opis:

A lively discussion on cultural differences and the growing need for the development of intercultural communication were the impetus for writing this work. Article includes within its scope examination of the level of intercultural sensitivity of the professional athletes. For the implementation of the main and specific objectives set in the study was based on Intercultural Sensitivity Scale developed by Chen and Starosta. It takes into account five dimensions: interaction engagement, respect for cultural differences, interaction confidence, interaction enjoyment and interaction attentivenes. The collected research material shows that fact of playing in foreign club is significant factor differentiating the level of intercultural sensitivity. The study pointed out the development model of intercultural sensitivity Bennett.
Ożywiona dyskusja na temat różnic kulturowych oraz rosnące potrzeby rozwoju komunikacji międzykulturowej były bodźcem do napisania niniejszej pracy. Artykuł obejmuje swym zakresem badanie poziomu wrażliwości międzykulturowej osób wyczynowo uprawiających sport. Do realizacji celu głównego oraz celów szczegółowych postawionych w pracy wykorzystano Skalę Wrażliwości Międzykulturowej stworzoną przez Chena i Starostę. Uwzględnia ona pięć wymiarów: zaangażowanie w interakcję, szacunek dla różnic kulturowych, pewność w interakcji, przyjemność z interakcji i uwagę w interakcji. Zebrany materiał badawczy wskazuje istotny czynnik różnicując7y poziom wrażliwości międzykulturowej w postaci gry w zagranicznym klubie. W pracy wskazano model rozwoju wrażliwości międzykulturowej Bennetta.

The paper presents the core aims and objectives of the teaching materials developed within the IEREST (Intercultural Education Resources for Erasmus Students and their Teachers) project, and shows how the innovative approach adopted for these activities can be implemented in the classroom. The IEREST teaching modules are innovative in that the approach adopted draws strongly on the notions of critical cosmopolitanism (Holliday 2012) and intercultural communicative competence (Byram 1997 and 2012). The activities in the modules promote a view of culture as a negotiated „process” among individuals, small or large groups and intercultural communication as a co-construction of meaning conveyed across linguistic and cultural boundaries, thus rejecting explicitly any “essentialist” attitudes and simplistic overgeneralisation of “otherness.” The approach to language use in intercultural encounters observes how the above concepts are expressed in a number of contexts, while also building on the view that intercultural communication among bilinguals often takes advantage of a lingua franca, a foreign language that all the participants in the communicative activity have in common because they had learned it. Taking into account the concept of “linguaculture” (Risager 2012) the modules seek to raise awareness of the negotiating process in rendering meaning through a linguistic and cultural blend of both the target language and the speake’s first language. The paradigm shift proposed by the IEREST Modules indicates a need to rethink current practices in intercultural education and to acknowledge societal changes in multilingual Europe and beyond.

The article describes the basic forms and methods of forming cross-cultural competence of future professionals in public relations. The author presents a description of educational activities carried out during the experimental work. Organizational and methodical aspects of forming cross-cultural competence of future professionals in public relations are viewed in teaching students two special disciplines, conducting training programs and didactic games. The four-semester long special course “English in professional activities” is planned to enable students to communicate professionally. One-semester long special course “Intercultural communication” is organized to assist future specialist in culture knowledge. Training programs are offered to form the system of values and measure the actual level of cross-cultural competence. Role play envisages practicing professional communication.

With a special highlight to the importance of intercultural education, the authors state that the key conditions for the effective use of this form of teaching are well-prepared virtual didactic materials, such as teaching modules, and an appropriate combination of resources and tools for synchronous and asynchronous communication. Open source tools allow teachers to create engaging and attractive activities. Moreover, they can be used in learning progress control. Regarding the stage of virtual materials design, a crucial role play careful analysis and composition of the course content. The presented instructional solutions reveal the effects of over a three-year authors' co-operation in creating learning resources for the purpose of cross-cultural training led at the National Defense University in Warsaw. The basis for implementation of all activities were solutions and guidelines recommended by Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative, an institution which is more recognized in military than civilian environments. Final conclusions include reflections on the praxeological approach to the issue of the use of blended learning in civil-military contexts.

In this article I present some applications of analogy with reference to intercultural dialogue, firstly as a process in which the familiar structure of a direct experience in one situation improves awareness of an expected experience within another structure. Secondly, I follow the Enrique Dussel’s approach according to which where analogy is the key element of a true dialogue. In the paper conceptions of Ryszard Kapuściński, Martin Buber, Józef Tischner are presented in the context of intercultural dialogue and are applied to Yuko Abe’s analysis of students exchange experiences.

Rwanda today faces various challenges of civilization, first of all, however, it has ti copy with the legacy of the ehnic genocide. Not surprisingly, that one of the fundamental tasks that the country and its government set itself after 1994 became the problem of the legal judgement of persons responsible for genocide and of the establishing of national unity, which would prevent Rwanda from the next conflict. Therefore, apart from judging on a massive scale all those guilty of crimes, the government has taken parallel action for the idea of commemorating the victims and began the process of building national unity. Today, Rwanda is a place for education which aims at the creation of a one national community and the state, in other words „education for the community”.

The author draws attention to the challenges and tasks of intercultural education in the context of contemporary problems related to the implementation of the dilemmas and principles of multiculturalism. Multiculturalism is treated and analysed not only as the coexistence of different cultural groups in the same space, but primarily as an identity, ideological and educational phenomenon that allows to notice, point and deliver new strategies in intercultural education. The prospect of emancipation, polyphony, J. Tischner’s philosophy of dialogue, ethics of respect for life by A. Schweitzer, genetic law of cultural development by L. S. Vygotsky and the changes of countries functions from military-defensive and economic towards social and cultural, are the basics to formulate the strategies for intercultural education and the development of democratic multicultural societies. By referring to the twenty years of actions that have been undertaking by the Department of Intercultural Education at the University of Bialystok, the author indicates the diversity of educational and social practices of different nature at local, regional, national and international levels. These practices are based on considering in these activities the needs, expectations and aspirations of majority and minority groups about the right to preserve their own culture and the creation of rules of coexistence and shared responsibility for socio-cultural area that is culturally diverse.

The author, referring to his own research on the Polish-Lithuanian, Polish-Belarusian and Polish-Ukrainian borderland, formulates the thesis that after the collapse of the USSR individual nations began to develop their own national identity in opposition to other nations. This paper represents a socio-political process synthesis concerning integration in the US, as one of the first countries to experiment multicultural practices and realize a multiethnic consciousness, for overcoming the social discrimination. It explains how, in more than a century of social and political activism, has almost been impossible to eradicate completely the racism stronghold, creating a civic consciousness. At this point, can we think about racism phenomenon as a biological matter? Actually, as explained by R. Siebert (Siebert, 2001), the racism has grown up in the collective imaginary as something that belongs to the humans naturally. It is just a historical process of Modernity, appeared in the west territories. The US, as this paper highlights, are an example of how the racism is connected to the historical events.
