In the interwar period the Ossolineum in Lviv was among the best-equipped and bestmanaged libraries in the country. One of the strategies for its development was initiated by its director at that time action of obtaining collections serving for the development of historicliterary studies. In time archive and librarian experiences of the Ossolineum employees favoured undertaking new challenges. In the 1930s attention was drawn to the need of elaborating a program for obtaining archival materials and sources for the history of Galicia. Finally in 1937 the Ossolineum in cooperation with the Scientific Society undertook the task of collecting private materials for the socio-economic and political history as well as the culture of the area of the former Austrian annexed territory. This text presents documents form the Ossolineum Library in Wrocław with signature rkps. 14070/II. Documents concerning the Ossolineum gathering materials connected with Galicia. Reports, minutes, correspondence (pp.546). From this rich collection the following have been selected, the document by Andrzej Lubomirski inviting to participate in the meeting; meeting minutes from 16th March 1937; Franciszek Bujak’s letter being an integral part of the minutes; Kazimierz Tyszkowski’s paper presented during the meeting and the Ossolineum manifest in this matter directed to the society.

The aim of this paper is to present how the participants in a debate between a representative of new atheism (and evolutionism) and a representative of Christianity frame their arguments by the metaphor of struggle for survival. In order to do so a debate Has Science Buried God? has been analysed. It is shown that arguments are thought to compete for the status of “the truth” in the eyes of the general public, in a way that “better” ones push out “worse” ones, especially with a view to how scientific discoveries make explanations considered valid in the past no longer valid.

Introduction. This article reports differences in accurate and inaccurate forehand and backhand strokes in tennis. The tests were carried out on a professional tennis player. The duration of a stroke, the heights of the individual segments of the right upper limb and differences in the heights of the segments at the beginning and at the end of every phase of stroke were examined. Aim. The major aim of the work was to expose upper limb disparity in stokes. Description of the case report. The research tool was inertial motion sensors (IMS) based on an accelerometer, a gyroscope and a magnetometer. A professional tennis player was examined using the individual case method and kinematic analysis. Results. The analysis concerned the average time to perform forehand and backhand strokes during all phases of the stroke, i.e. preparation, acceleration and follow-through phases. The average heights of the individual upper limb segments during a stroke were also taken into account. The results of the study are meant to show how the movement of the upper limb affects the accuracy and velocity of a stroke. Conclusion. The movements of individual segments in some accurate strokes were similar to those in inaccurate strokes.

This paper presents the results of wideband behavioral modeling of an induction machine (IM). The proposed solution enables modeling the IM differential- and common-mode impedance for a frequency range from 1 kHz to 10 MHz. Methods of parameter extraction are derived from the measured IM impedances. The developed models of 1.5 kW and 7.5 kW induction machines are designed using the Saber Sketch scheme editor and simulated in the SABER simulator. Modeling validation is based on prediction of electromagnetic interference (EMI) emissions of common-mode and differential-mode current spectra of experimental inverter-fed IM drives.

L’article presente une tentative de Her le Ps 29 avec la liturgie de la fete des Tentes. Israel a emprunté cette liturgie annuelle chez les originaires de Cartaan, que avaient celebré an automne la terminaison des recoltes. L’analyse philologique et théologique du Ps 29 n’a pourtant confirmé l’hypothèse de son original cananéen. Plutôt c’était polémique contre le culte de Baal. Le theme de l’orage étant present dans le Ps 29, il ne dit rien de la pluie fécondante. Cette fonction du dieu de la vegétation on ne pouvait pas transferer sur le Dieu d’Israel. Le psalmiste a souligné ici plutôt la force déstructrice de l’orage, dans laquelle Yahwé manifeste son pouvoir sur la nature. La trame du Ps 29, 3-9b est originaire du territoire nord, parce que a Jérusalem le cult de Baal était absent.

Cooperative and Non-cooperative use of Pronouns in Texts from the Field of Physics and by Authors of Literature (Franz Kafka, Thomas Mann) from the Early Twentieth CenturyThe goal of this work is to test the hermeneutic potential of comparative analyses of grammatical phenomena in texts from a linguostylistic perspective. The stylistic profile of text can be highlighted by the identification of formal elements, which are assumed to convey poeticity. Text elements such as pronouns can be expected to be functionally ambiguous and therefore particularly relevant from a receptive point of view. The question is, whether pronominalization shows features which can identify styles typical of individual texts and text types, and how these features can influence the text reception.

The author accepting the distinction between history and memory in her article refers it to the institution which was perceived as important in a topographic and cultural sense in the lives of Poles (mainly intelligentsia) in the modern era – to the Lviv Ossolineum. She does not present the history of the Ossolineum but she is interested in finding answer to the question about the process of creating the exceptional status of the Lviv library and the transmission on the significance of that place and values connected with it to the society in the individual and social awareness. It is an attempt to analyze the memory about the institution through the prism of scientific knowledge about it. The writer pays attention to the fact that the Ossolineum owed the most to its employees who did the task of presenting its achievements in a longer or shorter time span. Indicating various approaches to studies on the history of the Ossolineum and possibilities of further research the author focuses her attention on the process of shaping social memory of the Ossolineum distinguishing within it such elements as the establishing idea, development of the institution and the role of its directors, scholarship holders of the Lviv foundation which included two, namely Stanisław Łempicki and Stanisław Wasylewski, who played a key role in preserving the Ossolineum memory thanks to their high mental culture and literary abilities

Opis:
The Ossolineum in Lviv was one of the most important scientific-cultural centres in Poland and the second largest (right behind the Jagiellonian Library) library. Since 1939 it was taken over by the Soviet and German occupying authorities. It was nationalized and reorganized. Thanks to the determination and involvement of many Polish employees of the Ossolineum the vast part of the book collection was saved from destruction and degradation. One of the people taking part in this process was Wacław Olszewicz, a librarian, excursionist, prewar ministerial clerk who spent the postwar period in Lviv. Here he devoted his time to working with books as consecutively a librarian and bibliographer in the Ossolineum, the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union at the cost of quitting the chance of returning to Poland. He kept in touch with Polish scientists publishing his works in Polish journals. He died in 1974. He was buried on the Janowski cemetery in Lviv.

Podstawowym celem artykułu jest analiza sposobów przedstawiania tematyki buddyjskiej w filmach fabularnych. Wychodząc od uproszczonych wyobrażeń na temat buddyzmu, jakie dominowały w kinie amerykańskim od początku ubiegłego stulecia, Loska skupia się na tym, w jaki sposób twórcy azjatyccy – przede wszystkim południowokoreańscy – posługiwali się medium audiowizualnym dla pokazania buddyzmu jako praktyki życiowej, a nie tylko jako doświadczenia medytacyjnego. Analizując utwory Bae Yong-kyuna i Im Kwon-taeka, autor zwraca uwagę na krytyczny potencjał w nich zawarty oraz możliwość odmiennego spojrzenia na tradycję religijną, która wyrosła z potrzeby powiązania wymiaru sakralnego ze świeckim, duchowości z cielesnością.
The basic aim of the article is the analysis of the ways in which Buddhism is presented in feature films. Starting with simplified ideas about Buddhism, which dominated in the American cinema in the beginning of the previous century, Loska focuses on the way Asian artists - especially South Korean ones - used the audiovisual medium in order to show Buddhism as a way of life, and not just a meditative experience. In his analysis of the work of Bae Yong-kyun and Im Kwon-taek the author points to the critical potential contained within them and the possibility of a different view of a religious tradition, which arose out of the need to combine the sacral and secular dimensions, spirituality with physicality.

The history of KOSMOS and present standing of the journal are shortly outlined on the occasion of its 140. anniversary.
KOSMOS has been founded by The Polish Copernicus Society of Naturalists, as a monthly scientific almanac, the first volume of which has been published 140 years ago in 1886. The aim of the journal was to help the Society to fulfill its statuary objectives - advancement of knowledge in the field of natural sciences, in particular of physiographical ones, as well as cataloguing and protection of monuments of nature. Therefore, content of the journal included both original and review papers, chronical and bibliographic notes. Although the seat of the Society and the journal was then in the city of Lwow, within the Austrian Partition of Poland (called The Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria), KOSMOS served also polish authors and readers from the Russian and Prussian Partitions, and from abroad. The journal has been published in Lwow also after formation of the Polish Republic (1918) until the II World War. Appearance of specialized learned societies and journals, forced The Polish Copernicus Society of Naturalists in 1928 to split KOSMOS into two series with identical numeration of the volumes: Series A, Dissertations (original papers with English or French summaries), and Series B, Reviews (devoted to popularization of science). After the War, KOSMOS was reactivated in 1952, in Warsaw, as a review journal devoted solely to popularization of biological sciences and with anew volume's numeration. For a couple of years (1952-1956) the journal has been extensively used for insemination of pseudo-scientific ideas of Lysenkoism in genetics and evolutionary biology, recognized at that time as obligatory ones in the USSR. With the appearance of a younger generation of editors, in the middle of 70-thies of the former century, a stepwise modernization of the journal has begun. There were introduced: thematic issues devoted to current topics and organized mostly by invited guest-editors, English summaries of articles, modern graphical layout with an added journal's subtitle "Problems of biological sciences" (1997), and finally - a parallel, freely accessible, internet edition (since 2002). Information about the content, editor(s) names and their institutional affiliation, and year of publication of the thematic issues in the period 1983-2015 is presented in tabular form in the text. Also tabulated is statistical information about the number of researchers affiliated with particular scientific institutions who authored or co-authored papers published in the period of 2000-2015, documenting that majority of the authors were affiliated with universities and institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences of broadly recognized high scientific standing. Statistical information indicating high popularity of the journal's internet edition is presented in the form of plots: (i) of the number of visits from individual IP's of the readers and the number of articles downloaded monthly between 2002 and 2015, and (ii) of the number of articles downloaded during the whole year 2015 from particular archival volumes 2002-2014. In spite of the high standing and popularity of the journal, the Society encounters steady financial problems with coverage of its publication cost. This is mainly due to insufficient and fluctuating support from the public funds. A helping hand has been offered recently by the authorities of the Nicolas Copernicus University in Toruń, the Scientific Publishing House of which became co-publisher of KOSMOS since 2012.

The article discusses a study by Alexiey Fedaruk, a graduate of the “The Nieśwież Academy ” International Postgraduate Summer School, distinguished in 2004 in the Professor Jan Zachwatowicz competition held by the Polish National ICOMOS Committee for the best diploma work concerning the revalorisation of historical monuments. The winner proposed a project of a lapidarium marking the site of a Jewish cemetery in Brześć (Brest). The competition jury took into consideration the high level of the work and the author’s familiarity with, and sensitivity towards Jewish culture and religion, consistent methodic realisation, and educational and popularisation assets, of particular importance in Belarus where, for historical reasons, the problem of Jewish culture remains insufficiently known.

Artykuł jest poświęcony Mieczysławowi Stanisławowi Popławskiemu, wybitnemu wykładowcy filologii klasycznej na Katolickim Uniwersytecie Lubelskim oraz prezesowi Towarzystwa Biblioteki Publicznej im. Hieronima Łopacińskiego w Lublinie. Treść przybliża młodość uczonego, którą spędził w Rosji oraz początki pracy na lubelskiej uczelni. Ukazuje wszechstronność zainteresowań Popławskiego, jego pracę naukową oraz związki z ówczesnym światem naukowym, które pozwoliły mu w 1928 r. osiągnąć tytuł profesora nadzwyczajnego, a w 1937 r. zwyczajnego. Ważna część artykułu poświęcona jest także jego działalności w Towarzystwie Biblioteki Publicznej oraz znakomitym osiągnięciom, jakich dokonał w trakcie pełnienia funkcji prezesa. Popławski był bez wątpienia jedną z najważniejszych postaci, które znacząco wpłynęły na rozwój działalności Biblioteki Publicznej im. Hieronima Łopacińskiego. Najcenniejszymi źródłami wiedzy podczas pisania artykułu było niewątpliwie Archiwum Uniwersyteckie KUL, ale też liczne publikacje naukowe dotyczące życia i twórczości Mieczysława Popławskiego.
This article is devoted to Mieczysław Stanisław Popławski, an outstanding lecturer in Classical studies at the Catholic University of Lublin and chairman of the Society of the Hieronim Łopaciński Regional Public Library in Lublin. The content outlines the scholar’s youth, which he spent in Russia, and the beginnings of work at university in Lublin. It presents the wide range of Popławski’s interests, his academic work, and his connections with the academic world of the time, which allowed him to be promoted to Associate Professor in 1928 and to full Professor in 1937. A significant part of the article is also devoted to his activities in the Public Library Society and his great achievements while he performed the function of its chairman. Popławski was without a doubt one of the most important figures who significantly influenced the development of the activities of the Hieronim Łopaciński Regional Public Library. The most valuable sources of knowledge used in the course of writing the article were undoubtedly the University Archives of the Catholic University of Lublin, and also the numerous academic publications on the life and writings of Mieczysław Popławski.
Статья посвящается Мечиславу Станиславу Поплавскому, известному преподавателю классической филологии в Католическом университете в Люблине а также председателю Общества публичной библиотеки им. Херонима Лопацинского в Люблине. В статье описывается юность ученого, которую провел в России, а также начало его работы в люблинском университете. Автор подчеркивает широкие интересы Поплавского, говорит об его научных трудах и связях с научной средой, которые позволили ему в 1928 году получить звание профессора. Основная часть статьи посвящается деятельности Поплавского в Обществе публичной библиотеки им. Херонима Лопацинского в Люблине а также его великолепным достижениям как председателя. Поплавский несомненно является одним из важнейших людей, которые повлияли на развитие деятельности Публичной библиотеки им. Х. Лопацинского. Ценнейшим источником знаний для автора статьи был несомненно Архив Католического университета, а также многие научные публикации о жизни и работе Мечислава Поплавского.
