This paper is an analysis of the debate concerning higher education that has been taking place among German intellectuals since World War II. The purpose of this research is: firstly – to trace back the relationship between the presuppositions of the Prussian reform and its historical realization, pointing out social and political contexts of the reshaping of the German higher education system and outlining a map of possible stances in this debate; secondly – to present the problem of autonomy of German universities from the perspective of this debate and the paradoxical relationship between idea and reality, theory and practice; thirdly – to relate these analyses to the contemporary conditions of Polish higher education and make an attempt to show this condition from an external, yet close perspective, as the Humboldtian idea and its legacy seems to be.

Opis:
The article describes the role of interdisciplinarity in the process of making science.  Two patterns of research and development of discipline are presented: the closed pattern which concentrates  on specialization and the open pattern  which fosters interdisciplinary science. The key to success is always openness for new scientific experiences and communities. The conclusion of the article is a proposal for  finding new scientific communities, which could be interested in new ideas, research  and thoughts where interdisciplinary analyses are not acceptable to the local scientific community.

The Author discusses the relevance of the university education model proposed by Wilhelm von Humboldt from the perspective of today’s universities. When discussing the concept developed by the Prussian education minister, the Author asks if today’s life offers room for the university education model based on the concept of partnership-based community of students and teachers who seek answers to all questions preoccupying contemporary researchers and do so in a free, unrestrained and disinterested manner. Under this model, the problem of applicability of knowledge is pushed to the background whereas interdisciplinary nature of intellectual quest and of new knowledge prevails.

The second half of the XVIIIth century contributed to a radical change in the cultural relationship with the past. Historicism, understood as the widespread method of conceptualization of human inventions, appeared not only in historiography, but also marked its presence in literature, philosophy, architecture and art. The aim of this article is to explore some of the outlooks on the connection between historicism and classical antiquity in the works of Winckelmann, Humboldt and Schlegel, important German thinkers with a significant impact on Polish literature and culture.

The collection of autographs of the former Prussian State Library in Berlin – now held by the Jagiellonian Library – contains a valuable autograph of Alexander Humboldt – fragment from Humboldt’s travel diary entitled Sobre algunos puntos interessantes para la Navegación, o extracto de las observaciones de longitud deducida de Eclipses del Sol y de la Luna de Satellites de Jupiter, distancias lunares y Chronometros en los annos de 1799–1803. The Humboldt’s manuscript travel diary was acquired by the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz Foundation in Berlin from a private owner in 2013. The part which is discussed in the present article (pp. 71–84) was cut out of Fascicle VIII of the notebook in the nineteenth century – most probably by Humboldt himself – after which it was annotated and given as a present to General Radowitz, who was a collector of autographs. It eventually found its way to the Royal Library in Berlin together with Radowitz’s entire collection.
W Zbiorze Autografów z byłej Pruskiej Biblioteki Państwowej w Berlinie, przechowywanym w Bibliotece Jagiellońskiej znajduje się cenny autograf Aleksandra Humboldta Sobre algunos puntos interessantes para la Navegación, o extracto de las observaciones de longitud deducida de Eclipses del Sol y de la Luna de Satellites de Jupiter, distancias lunares y Chronometros en los annos de 1799–1803. Fragment ten pochodzi z rękopiśmiennego dziennika podróży Humboldta. Rękopis samego dziennika pozyskała Fundacja Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz w Berlinie z rąk prywatnych w 2013 roku, natomiast omawiany w artykule fragment (s. 71–84) został wycięty w XIX wieku z zeszytu nr VIII dziennika najprawdopodobniej przez samego Humboldta, opatrzony komentarzem i ofiarowany kolekcjonerowi autografów gen. Radowitzowi, po czym razem z całym Zbiorem Radowitza trafił do Biblioteki Królewskiej w Berlinie.

The combination of linguistics and cultural analysis leads back to Wilhelm von Humboldt’s concept of linguistic worldview. In it, a direct connection between thinking and speaking (in a particular ethnic or national language) is presupposed, thus implying the influence of languages on cultures. In contrast to this postulate of the unity of languages and cultures, discourse-sensitive linguistics shows the diversity of varieties within ethno- or national-language-demarcated cultures. Linguistics in cultural studies thus escapes the danger of hypostasis of languages and cultures and methodologically becomes an integrative linguistics in which systemic, pragma- and sociolinguistic methods can be incorporated. Discourse-sensitive cultural linguistics analyzes cultures according to thematic and, above all, institutional discourses (of politics, religion, law, economics, science, etc.) and examines language use down to the level of individual utterances and their linguistic microstructures within the framework of these discursive macro levels. Another type is perlocutionary discourses which almost exclusively aim at the effect of communicative actions: advertising, propaganda, scandalous discourses etc. Discourse types are shown by Russian examples, especially the Russian national hymn, the provocative performances of the group Pussy Riot as an example of scandalous discourses, and state patriotic education as an example of propaganda discourses.
Badania lingwistyczne, które stawiają sobie za cel analizę kulturową, odwołują się do koncepcji językowego obrazu świata Wilhelma von Humboldta. Koncepcja ta zakłada istnienie bezpośredniego związku między myśleniem a mówieniem (w danym języku etnicznym lub narodowym), co również implikuje wpływ języków na kultury. W przeciwieństwie do postulatu zakładającego jedność/homogeniczność języków i kultur lingwistyka zorientowana dyskursologicznie zwraca uwagę na fakt, że kultury i ich języki są zróżnicowane. W ten sposób lingwistyka kulturoznawcza chce uniknąć niebezpieczeństwa hipostazy języków i kultur, a jednocześnie staje się w ujęciu metodologicznym lingwistyką integrującą, która uwzględnia metody z zakresu analizy systemu języka, jak i z zakresu pragma- oraz socjolingwistyki. Lingwistyka kulturoznawcza zorientowano dyskursologicznie porządkuje kultury według dyskursów tematycznych, a także instytucjonalnych (dyskursy polityki, religii, prawa, ekonomii, nauki itp.) oraz bada użycie języka aż do poziomu wypowiedzi indywidualnych i ich językowych mikrostruktur przez pryzmat ich funkcji w dyskursie. Innym rodzajem są dyskursy perlokutacyjne, które niemal wyłącznie dążą do wywołania u odbiorcy określonego efektu: reklama, propaganda, dyskursy skandalu itp. Istotę wymienionych rodzajów dyskursu pokazano na przykładach pochodzących z rosyjskiego obszaru językowo-kulturowego, w szczególności na przykładzie hymnu narodowego Rosji, prowokacyjnych wystąpień grupy Pussy Riot, które uznajemy za przykład dyskursów skandalu, oraz państwowej edukacji patriotycznej uchodzącej za przykład dyskursów propagandowych.

The lecture concerns the Berlin Palace (Stadtschloss) and presents a view of its long history, starting with its construction in the Baroque style by an artist of the Polish origin, Andreas Schlüter, up to its contemporary reconstruction with a new institutional function (Humboldt Forum). The ten sections of the text not only present architectural and artistic history of this residence but also pivotal historical events and contexts which affected the dimensions and meaning of its functioning. The Palace, entangled into German history but also reflecting it, especially as regards the 19th and 20th centuries, becomes both a starting point for an evaluation of this history and posing questions about the future. Along with the ferociously debated, present-day reconstruction and its museum function, it also seems to be a psychogram of diverse stages of the condition of German spirit.

Autor twierdzi, że biograficzne szczegóły dotyczące stosunku de Saussure’a do puścizny Humboldta są trudne do ustalenia. Wątpliwości Sobotki na temat de Saussure’a znajomości konkretnych pism Humboldta praktycznie nie podlegają weryfikacji, czy to pozytywnej, czy negatywnej. Autor twierdzi, że Danielewiczowa, podobnie jak on sam i Ewa Drzazgowska, mówili tylko o pewnym uderzającym podobieństwie idei dotyczących natury języka głoszonych przez de Saussure’a w zestawieniu z tym, co można znaleźć w obszernym korpusie prac Humboldta. Ogólnie rzecz biorąc, sam Sobotka jest daleki od negowania tej powszechnie uznanej prawdy (niezależnie od tego, jakie były konkretne drogi tego, co czytał i o czym myślał de Saussure). Autor podaje porównawczy wyciąg z głównych tez Humboldta i de Saussure’a, zwracając uwagę na pewne różnice między tymi myślicielami. Następnie przytacza szereg teoretycznych wypowiedzi Humboldta i przypomina podobne enuncjacje de Saussure’a, których poważna część jest nawet tekstualnie bliska temu, co znajdujemy u Humboldta.  
The author argues that the biographical details concerning de Saussure’s attitude towards Humboldt’s legacy are tough to ascertain. Sobotka’s doubts about de Saussure being familiar with Humboldt’s specific writings can hardly be conclusively resolved this way or another. The author insists that Danielewiczowa, as well as he himself and his collaborator Drzazgowska, spoke merely about some striking affinity of ideas on the nature of language as voiced by de Saussure, compared with those to be found in the comprehensive corpus of Humboldt’s writings. On the whole, Sobotka himself is far from denying this widely acknowledged truth, too (whatever the specific paths of de Saussure’s reading and thinking might have been). Following a comparative sample of the main claims articulated by Humboldt, on the one hand, and by de Saussure, on the other, where certain differences between the thinkers can be observed, the author culls a number of Humboldt’s theoretical sayings about language and recalls de Saussure’s similar enunciations, a considerable part of which are even textually close to those made by Humboldt.

The article takes up an issue of the Humboldt’s idea of university in two perspectives. In the first part of the analysis, in reference to the Max Weber’s lecture Wissenschaft als Beruf, we present the reasons for the failure of the Humboldt’s program due to the changes in the structure and function of the science, which occurred in the 19th century. In the second part, however, we depict the transformation of Humboldt’s program that was carried out by Wilhelm Dilthey. His justifying of humanities (Geisteswissenschaften) has retained, from today’s perspective, its topicality. It can be demonstrated with the aid of investigations of Jürgen Habermas, Eva Illouz and Hans Joas. Dilthey’s solutions, which continue the Humboldtian tradition, can be used to define the role and tasks of the humanities in the contemporary education model based on the idea of lifelong learning.

This article puts forth Modern Socratic Dialogue as a pedagogical tool for cultivating an American Bildung. Beginning with Michael Hogue’s work on “resilient democracy,” an associational ethos that is vulnerable and based on our lived uncertainty. To further establish this American Bildung, I investigate what it means to be American. Drawing from the works of Michael Walzer and Gloria Anzaldúa, I establish that “American” means unfinished, pluralistic, and embraces ambiguity. The question of how to cultivate this pluralistic, ambiguous, and vulnerable Bildung is framed by the freedom and social bonds of Wilhelm von Humboldt’s theory of Bildung. For an American Bildung to flourish, freedom and social bonds can be presented and practiced in the form of Modern Socratic Dialogue – “truths” are created by the community of interlocutors, and problems and solutions are based on the experiences of the participants.

The article presents the source inspirations of what can be called the „Polish university model”. This model emerges in the functioning of Polish universities in the 20th century and is undoubtedly related to the foundations of science laid by Kazimierz Twardowski in the philosophical and logical activity of the Lvov- Warsaw School. The article aims to explore the sources of Twardowski's inspiration that influenced the shape of his school, and also translated into the wider functioning of Polish universities. Artykuł stawia sobie za cel eksplorację źródeł inspiracji Twardowskiego, które wpłynęły na kształt jego szkoły, a także przełożyły się na szersze funkcjonowanie polskich uczelni wyższych. In this article, we introduce the concept of “higher Bildung,” which we developed as a pedagogical approach to doctoral supervision and mentoring guided by principles of emancipation and individual freedom. The pedagogical framework builds on a combination of higher education and the educational concept of Bildung to foster an idea of higher education that highlights growth, cooperation, and sustainability. We discuss three fundamental pillars for this concept – independence, interdisciplinarity, and internationality – and explain how we applied this conceptual framework in an international seminar for early-stage researchers, which resulted in articles published in the special section of this peer-reviewed journal.
W niniejszym artykule wprowadzamy pojęcie „higher Bildung,” którym posłużyliśmy się w naszym podejściu pedagogicznym do opieki nad doktorantami, odwołując się do zasad emancypacji i indywidualnej wolności. Owa rama pedagogiczna opiera się na połączeniu szkolnictwa wyższego z pojęciem Bildung, a jej celem jest promowanie idei szkolnictwa wyższego, które kładzie szczególny nacisk na współpracę i zrównoważony rozwój. W artykule omawiamy główne filary tego podejścia – niezależność, współpracę oraz międzynarodowość – i wyjaśniamy, w jaki sposób zastosowaliśmy owe ramy koncepcyjne w międzynarodowym seminarium oferowanym dla młodych badaczy, którego efektem są artykuły opublikowane w specjalnym sekcji tego czasopisma.
