Opis:
Chronic low back pain affects 50-80% of the population, while its consequences may impair the functioning of patients suffering from it, in many spheres of life . Hope is a factor which may influence coping with pain as well as cognitive reflection of pain experience. The aim of the study has been to check: 1) whether dependencies exist between hope-trait and hope-state and the perception of pain; 2) whether experiencing pain at the time of filling questionnaires matters for the assessment of the level of hope; 3) whether there is interaction between hope, the pain experienced at the moment of investigation, and memory of the intensity of previously experienced pain. 150 patients participated in the study, they all reported aggravation of the chronic low back pain syndrome. The study was a cross-sectional study, based on questionnaires. On the third day of treatment the subjects were given the following questionnaires: Trait Hope Scale, State Hope Scale, and Numerical Rating Scale of Pain to fill. Poor correlation was demonstrated to exist between hope-state and hope-pathways on the one hand, and the intensity of minimum pain level experienced during the first three days of treatment. It has been noted that the presence of pain at the time of filling questionnaires results in reducing the hope-state, but only in those persons, who had experienced severe pain previously. On the other hand, in case of patients who had experienced slight pain previously, the pain present when filling in the questionnaires is conducive to enhanced hope-state. The results of the study confirm the complex character of relations between hope and pain.

Opis:
This study aimed to measure the hope level of Iranian English-major students and also to find out if their gender, academic degree, years spent in a program, and GPA were associated with their hope level. To reach these aims, the Integrative Hope Scale developed by Sharpe, McElheran, and Whelton (2017) was modified, checked for validity, and piloted. Then, it was distributed among 206 English-major students doing their BA, MA, and PhD in different universities of Iran, chosen through random and snowball sampling. The analysis of the data through non-parametric tests showed that although undergraduate and postgraduate students enjoyed a higher level of hope, there was no significant difference in the students’ hope level based on their academic degree. Furthermore, no significant relationship was found between students’ levels of hope, on the one hand, and their GPA and the number of years spent in a program, on the other hand. However, there was a significant difference between male and female students, with males having a higher level of hope.

Opis:
Hope-Action Theory presents a theoretical structure that holds Hope as the center point of career development. Associated with hope are competencies such as self-reflection, self-clarity, visioning, goal setting and planning, implementation, and adapting. There also are environmental factors that influence the entire career development process. In order to assess the practical utility of Hope-Action Theory a series of intervention research studies were initiated in different contexts. This article reviews the results from these studies. The first one applied specific active interventions with a group of internationally trained health professionals. The second study involved unemployed clients using a series of face-to-face and online interventions. The third group focused on the needs of refugees and was set up with a control and experimental groups using a two week group delivery approach. Positive results from all of these studies supports the utility of Hope-Action Theory and the set of active interventions that were used in this research.

Realizm i uniwersalizm rozwija nadzieję i umożliwia osobie branie udziału w odczytaniu porządku i wizji rzeczywistości.
Hope motivates every action, and makes targets that are difficult to achieve become achievable. It is the basic way to enter into the reality of the human condition and to participate in it creatively. Hope is a universal and real trait. Realism and universalism develop hope and allow the person to take part in reading the order and vision of reality. With hope, a man can understand what his provisionalness is and how his future is born; he finds himself in everyday life. In hope there is great liberating potential. In its deepest content, it is trusting God, who is faithful to his promises.

Opis:
Pedagogical reflection is accompanied from the start by the conviction that upbringing is an art and requires a particular kind of sensitivity, innovativity in action and creative engagement. Upbringing today is upbringing in a society that is diverse, wavering, full of tension, and in which there are many opportunities for choice, great personal responsibility, with life chances, but also with many dangers. This is why an authentic upbringing requires, above all, a closeness and trust which brings love, a first and fundamental experience which is, or at least which ought to be, the love of a child by its parents. The upbringer, thus, stands in a relationship to the upbringee as with a person, and not a material which may be freely formed. The upbringing itself is aiming towards the future positive development of the child such that s/he will be able to realize his/her “potential”, shape his/her will and develop as an “inimitable person” both in the individual and social senses. The “realisation of the individual” which takes place during upbringing leaves space for hope. In the promise and hope the future interacts with the human life even now, and by the same token shows the sense behind upbringing. Whereas, from the perspective of “Christian realism”, it is emphasised that the individual always finds finds him or herself in a certain “existential situation”. And so upbringing is not merely a dialogue and a relationship between people, but it is also a real relationship with God. It is God who comes to meet the individual in history and who gives him the unfailing promise of total fulfilment (joy, a sense of life). In this view the sign of hope is also the building of a future (a community) through respecting the natural laws and fundamental freedoms of people and nations.

Hope accompanies man in the pursuit of fulfilling something that is essential and necessary for human existence. It counteracts the sense of loss of the most important values for a human being. A lack of hope leads people to despair; and thus often to make decisions leading to irreversible life situations. Hope lets people pass through the most difficult moments and periods of life. On the one hand; it shapes the existential vision of a human being; filled with his trust; faith in a better; favorable destiny; and on the other - affects his sense of transcendence; which pervades comfort. Hope improves human life. And although there is no hope without fear; it is the way of seeking the meaning of life. Hope is a force that especially protects those who are on the verge of despair that takes the sense of bleakness. As a rational being assigned to the structure of personality of every human being; it can be perceived in several contradictory dimensions. Hope is the cause that improves all dimensions of every human life. It realizes itself through the world of values to which a human is heading without which he cannot shape the quality of his life. Hope has its own structure through which one should understand a certain system of peculiar properties coming with different strength into mutual relations; which are both its elements and constitute the whole that decide for the individual and unique character of the sense of hope in the case of every human being. The question arises about the meaning of hope; its place and role in pedagogical processes; in which the conscious subjects are people that are brought up and raised. The pedagogy of hope is an attempt to penetrate the essence of particularly important elements/factors supporting the development of the human personality.

A lie as an element used in literature has different representations: frauds, intrigues, betrayals and purposeful deceptions are accompanied by lies invoked by fear or necessity, and what matters in evaluation of the behaviour of the protagonists that lie are the reasons and motives of their decisions. The anal-ysis included is focused on a merciful lie, a lie caused by pity, which determines significantly the course of action and the protagonists’ lives, saves their health or even life; a lie that results from good and love for other people.

Other factors facilitating the experience of posttraumatic growth were hope and basic trust, as well as the theme of agency present in the narratives.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to present the role of the phenomenon of hope in the philosophy of education of Wojciech Chudy. The contemporary philosophies of hope, of G. Marcel, P. Ricoeur and personalistic thought of J. Tischner and John Paul II, are the background of the discussion. Ontic and axiological basis of hope might be found in the structure of a man. Hope is built upon the personal features of: potential, contingency, transcendence, connected with the temporal dimension of life – constant inclination towards future and absolute values. It is also rooted in features of dignity, ability to discover and choose the truth, which are realized in acts of love. They make the upbringing of a man “the work on the human hope” that aims to attain the plenitude of personal development by the subjects of educational relation. It is realized by the effort of self-education, motivated by the testimony of the educator, emerging in the attitudes of dialogue and encounter. The hope has its special meaning in the border situations of the human existence (suffering, illness, death). It enables to discover their sense and directs towards eschatological perspective of the ultimate hope of the eternal life. The phenomenon of hope, expressed in the philosophical-pedagogic thought of Wojciech Chudy, brings the positive view on life and development of a man, which becomes the motive of undertaking pedagogical actions.

Objective. The aim of the study is to compare the hope of rural and urban inhabitants in the terminal stage of a neoplastic disease covered by stationary hospice care. Materials and method. The study was carried out among patients in the terminal phase of a neoplastic disease. They were patients of both 24-hour and daily palliative and hospice care units throughout the country. The study group consisted of 246 patients, average age – 59.5, the youngest respondent was 18 and the oldest – 90. The B. L. Block (NCN-36) test, prepared for people struggling with serious life-threatening diseases, was used. Comparison of the results with regard to the place of residence was based on the test Friedman ANOVA and Kendall compatibility factor. The general comparison of hope in individual dimensions and globally with the division into the degree of urbanization, was based on the Kruskal-Wallis test. Results. On the basis of factor analysis, 4 scales constructed from 8 items branch were distinguished. The following scales are used to study hope in the situational dimension – health, the telek-temporal dimension – goals, the spiritual dimension – religious beliefs and in the emotional-affective (affective) dimension – motivations. Conclusions. The strength of hope in people in the terminal phase of cancer, residing in villages, settlements, small, medium and large cities, was similar and depended on its magnitude. Of all the manifestations of hope, the greatest variation in results occurred in the subjects when they encountered serious problems and difficulties. The inhabitants of medium-sized cities were characterized by a higher hope at that time.

Research into the emotional experiences of language learners and their impact upon the language-learning process remains relatively undernourished within second language education. The research available focuses primarily on emotions experienced within the classroom, rather than in the daily lives of learners within various social contexts. This article contends that the focus placed upon emotions within the relatively structured environment of the formal classroom is problematic, particularly within an ESL environment, as the target language is more frequently experienced beyond the classroom. Drawing on data collected within Australia, the study explored the emotional experiences of a small cohort of eight university-level ESL learners experienced within their various social interactions beyond the classroom with a specific focus on the emotions of hope, enjoyment and frustration. Semi-structured interviews revealed that their emotional experiences beyond the classroom were particularly intense in comparison to emotional experiences within the formal language-learning classroom.

In this article, the author calls attention to a danger of proclaiming a depersonalised object of hope in a Christian funeral sermon, which he does not consider to be a legitimate Christian practice. The author reached this conclusion based on his analysis of one particular sermon from his research sample of 3x50 funeral sermons from three different church traditions (Lutheran church, evangelical churches, and Roman Catholic church). In the aforementioned funeral sermon, the object of hope was found to be articulated in a depersonalised form – the hope is not the eternity with the Lord, but simply: heaven. Christ is, in this particular sermon, merely a means by which the hearers may obtain their desired goal. Even though this funeral sermon was formulated using Christian terminology and was delivered by a Christian preacher, the author of this article does not regard its fundamental approach as Christian.

Opis:
Contrary to the widespread portrayal of Bloch’s philosophy as “mystical,” “eschatological,” “idealistic” etc., the essay shows that it is best interpreted through the framework of a Marxist philosophy of praxis. Similarly, to Labriola and Gramsci, Bloch develops his concept of materialism from Marx’s Theses on Feuerbach. His concepts of the “highest good” and of an “alliance technique” take up young Marx’s perspective of a reconciliation between humans and nature; his theory of anticipation and hope is centered on the development of collective capacities to act; even his “ontology of the not yet,” which is often criticized for its teleology, is actually based on the concept of “open possibilities” and can thus be interpreted in terms of the “weak teleological force of open possibilities.” However, from a praxis-philosophical perspective, Bloch’s philosophy is also in need of a rethinking that overcomes its essentialist presumptions and pluralizes its teleology.

For many women situated in post-socialist countries, the end of communism entailed the loss of state protection and social security. This often resulted in migration, underpinned by the hope for a better future and facilitated by trust in social networks. Trust and hope are often highlighted in the social-science literature as being indispensable means for navigating migration. What this perspective lacks, however, is an eye for the detrimental effects of the work of hope and for the beneficial effects of the work of distrust. For it can be hope that relates a subject to its exploiter and/or exploitative circumstances and it can be distrust that provides an escape route and increases agency. This article considers the illusive dimension of hope and the mobilising effect of distrust by referring to the experiences of Georgian migrant women in Thessaloniki (Greece). It shows how hope occasionally emanates out of distrust and how the combination of the two allows for new perspectives of action.

The article presents Bruno Schulz’s and Heinrich Kleist considerations on matter. A comparative approach enables a new interpretation of Traktat o manekinach by Schulz and of some selected works by Kleist. The author ponders about the role of elpis, around which the human world is created. The Greek word: elpis, contains a whole parable about a hope which has stood up to nonexistence, darkness, a lack of form. A human being turns out to be forced to create, knead matter, because his life depends on it. By shaping things he gives reality to his own world that may disappear at any time. Both reflected upon authors, Schulz and Kleist, choose two different paths to contact with matter and they inscribe it – together with a human being – into a philosophical thought that goes far beyond simple the “living” – “lifeless” opposition.

Tworzą oni intelektualne utopie, niemające potwierdzenia w naukowych badaniach psychologicznych i socjologicznych, choć są nośne w wielu kręgach kulturowych późnej nowoczesności. By wzmocnić to przekonanie Józefa Kozieleckiego, odwołamy się do badań Chantal Delsol francuskiej filozof politycznej. Badała ona zmiany kulturowe i polityczne w Europie w XX i XXI wieku. Wnioski zostały wypracowane w obszarze psychologii, socjologii i filozofii i wspierają przekonanie o wartości nadziei eschatologicznej.

The main aim of the current study was to examine whether and how life satisfaction is related to propensity to forgive one’s transgressor. Additionally, it also explored the relationship between life satisfaction and other chosen psychological variables, such as optimism and gratitude. The study involved 338 persons between 16 and 83 years of age. For the measurement of psychological variables the following research tools were used: Satisfaction With Life Scale, Transgression- Related Interpersonal Motivations Inventory, Gratitude Questionnaire, and Learned Optimism Test. Among the study participants satisfaction with life was positively correlated with the conviction about a permanent and ubiquitous nature of positive events, optimism and gratitude. The study also observed a negative correlation between satisfaction with life, the motivation for revenge and avoidance motivation, and the perception of a permanent and ubiquitous nature of adverse events.

Opis:
The problem discussed in this article concerns the relationship between hope and action styles in adolescents. An action style is a way in which man perceives and responds to the outside world, and it may be aimed at securing oneself or interacting with the surroundings. The main aim of this analysis was to find out if, and to what degree, the level of hope is connected with action styles. The following hypotheses are proposed: H – 1. There is a relationship between hope and an action style. H- 2. Persons with different types of hope are characterised by different styles of action. H – 3. Persons with a high level of hope have a cooperation‑oriented style. H – 4. Persons with a low level of hope are often characterised by a style aimed at protecting themselves. 149 persons aged 17 – 18 participated in the study. The following methods were used: the Basic Hope Inventory (BHI-12) – compiled by Trzebiński and M. Zięba, the Hope for Success Questionnaire (KNS) – adaptation of C. R. Snyder’s questionnaire made by M. Łaguna, J. Trzebiński and M. Zięba, as well as the Action Styles Questionnaire by Z. Uchnast. The results obtained have allowed the researchers to form the opinion that hope helps individuals function better in the world. The way in which a person perceives the world and their own capabilities translates into the style of action which they choose. A person who is full of hope seeks self‑actualisation as well as cooperation with others.

Opis:
Religious life, understood as life resulting from the actions of the Holy Spirit, called „spiritual life”, should cover all aspects of human existence. This article has been written from this point of view, i.e. Catholic theology. It is difficult to speak of human development, about stages of his achieving maturity, as well as internally integrated personality when you do not take into account spiritual life. Acts of spiritual struggle should cover life in the periodof old age in its specific phases, or even appear as the culmination of a lifetime’s spiritual maturity. Specific forms of this spiritual experience – highlights are acts of confrontation in the senior age with the truth of impending death. They can take place on the level of specific values. It is an experience of freedom, hope and solitude. Acceptance of the truth concerning the final existential status and being fully aware while carrying these states testifies the ability for transcendence acts. In a natural, thus inborn way, living beings, especially humans, are focused on being andon development of life. Behavioral defense actions appear when facing any threats. And so the entire human culture, from means and development of disciplines, practice of science, all the way to different methods of creating politics of consent and cooperation with people, is focused on protecting against loss of life. On the grounds of medical science continual attempts are being made to overcome death ultimately. Unfortunately, the final defeat of thefact of death is still very far away. Becoming aware of the upcoming moment of death without panic and paralyzing fear is a higher level of worthy living of one’s humanity. A fairly common practice proposed by institutional care centers and assistance offered to people at senior age is the method of running away from the final confrontation and offering substitution procedures such as proposals of many forms of physical and mental activity. This offer includes continuation of professional work, traveling, and participation in studies, dancing clubs and all types of entertainment. There is no need to depreciate these proposals, butthey cannot be the only model of experiencing the period of old age. They cannot be selfdeception techniques. It is striking how much vita activa dominates over vita contemplativa in the general culture. There are too few proposals for the continuation of Christian religious development in the form of performing spiritual acts of transcendence. There is no program to learn the ability of „crossing any spiritual limitations” in the sense of hope for „being” in the future, despite the fact that old people are to the greatest extent engaged in church and religious communities. Nothing can substitute for proposals of spiritual maturity. Unfortunately, church orthopraxis in this respect is also limited and neglected.

Opis:
What is hope, does it belong to any cognitive structure of the mind or rather is it a kind of human feeling? The aim of this paper is to describe the theory of hope according to C.R. Snyder (1944–2006). This contemporary point of view has provided a lot of inspiration for many studies in a variety of different fields. Undoubtedly, the reality of hope has a big impact on educational performance, health condition, stress management and adaptive skills. It is not only a life-line in times of emergency or strife, when humans have to cross some difficulties in life, but it is also the daily force to live in the present. Hope according to Snyder is a three dimensional construct of the integrated cognitive process (willpower, waypower and goal direction). The applicability and power of this construct lies in its potential to change the general level of hope in individual lives and social groups, not just in the future, but in the present.

Hope provides life with sense. Therefore it is important to experience it, to express and sustain it. Hope reveils the condition of contemporary human beings. It never leaves them; on contrary, they can abandon hope. Master is a source of hope for the others – this is a person of extraordinary knowledge of things and rightousness. In a relationship with a disciple, master encourages him or her to work on their personality, being an example of endurance on the path of self-development. We can distinguish two concepts of mastership. The methodic one – emphasizes one's perfect knowledge and ability to use it. According to it, one can learn the master's pattern of behaviour. The goal is one's perfection. The second concept – the personalist one – promotes sacrifition of one's perfection in service to fellowmen. One's perfection is not a goal here, but has its own goal: this is the disciple's growth. In upbringing only the personalist mastership makes it possible to experience the master's existence in its entirety, which represents the hope for the disciples development.

In Snyder’ theory the construct of hope is central to successful goal attainment. The present studies aimed to examine whether the experience of success versus failure in goal pursuits influence state hope, as was found in previous research. In Study 1, the participants completed a scale assessing current hopeful thoughts, and recall and describe successful, or unsuccessful goal pursuits. Then they again completed the state hope scale. In Study 2, the participants were instructed to complete two measures, assessing current hopeful thinking, and self-esteem. Then, they performed anagram tasks—representing easy, mixed, or difficult levels of difficulty, in which they respectively succeed, perform neutrally, or fail, or were assigned to control condition (the participants were sitting only). Next, they filled in the same two scales. In Study 1, state hope increased in the respondents who recalled successful goal pursuits, and decreased in those who recalled unsuccessful goal pursuits. However, this effect was moderated by gender: thinking about success increases state hope only in men, whereas thinking about failures decreases state hope just in women. In Study 2, those who experience failure experienced a decrease in state hope. However, such an effect was found only in women.

This essay investigates key aspects of the rhetorical structure of Romans 5–8 in relationship to Paul’s depictions of Christian experience. Taking Romans 5:1–5 as a blueprint for a trajectory of hope in chapters 5–8, I discuss three textual “detours” where Paul interrupts that trajectory: a rhetorical performance of life under sin (7:7–25), a depiction of union with all creation in suffering and hope (8:18–27), and a cry of lament (8:26). These rhetorical interruptions evoke Christian experience in solidarity with all creation - a solidarity that in turn displays Christ’s redemptive participation in the depths of all human dereliction, and thereby evokes hope.

Opis:
The article is an attempt to present, on a literary level, two differing perspectives of old age in various texts of the Hebrew Bible. First, a suggestion is made regarding the point in life when somebody could be regarded as old. A brief mention is made of the longevity of characters appearing in the so-called Primeval Cycle of Genesis 1-11. Then, it is indicated that Levitical instructions of Numbers 4 and 8 as well as rules of valuating people in Leviticus 27, can settle the beginning of old age at fifty or sixty years of age respectively, dependent on the type of work one performed. Second, the article focuses on positive aspects of old age in the Hebrew Bible, showing that to grow old was desired, since it was regarded as a realization and fulfilment of somebody's life. Old age in certain contexts can be viewed as a blessing from YHWH (e.g., Exod. 20,12) and a reward for a righteous living (Ps. 92,12-15). Old people according to Levitical traditions are to be respected because YHWH himself respects their old age (cf. Lev. 19,32). In early sapiential traditions of the Book of Proverbs, old age is connected with wisdom as this qualification assumes not only theoretical knowledge, but requires much practical experience. Therefore, wisdom seldom goes hand in hand with the young. Third, the article proceeds to present negative aspects of old age described in various traditions of the Hebrew Bible. It is pointed out that those texts speak honestly of infirmities of being old, such as weaker eyesight and taste, decreasing ability to procreate, and increasing disposition to being manipulated by others. A special accumulation of negative features of old age can be found in a later sapiential tradition of Qoheleth 12,2-6. Yet, it is suggested that old age is not the worst experience accoring to the sage, but endless oppression and loneliness are (cf. Eccles. 4,1-3.7-12). Finally, it is noted that some traditions expressing eschatological hope restore and promote the positive picture of old age. Deutero-Isaiah looks to a lengthening of human life far beyond a hundred years (Isa. 65,20). The Book of Jubilees 23,27 gives hope of extending human life to nearly a thousand years, which may be viewed as returning to the unrealized ideal of the Primeval Cycle in Genesis 1-11. Thus, old age can be viewed mainly as a positive perspective of human life.

The speech given by St. Pope John Paul II at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris on June 2, 1980 has a special place among his numerous addresses concerning culture. Referring to the cultural changes which took place in the last three centuries the pope stood up for culture, emphasising that, in an individual dimension, culture represents the constitutive element of life of every man and, correspondingly, in a social dimension, it provides a support for self-determination and for the freedom of nations. Formulating such a message, the pope referred to Polish experiences, in order to highlight the significance and the primacy of the person and to point out the subjective meaning of a nation and the ethical dimension of culture. In the papal message one can also find a call for cultural opposition against contemporary subjectivism and other tendencies heading towards the disinheritance of man and to the shutting of the door of the universal horizon of hope and love, which is based on manifold human experiences from the past.

The paper aims at examining the predictive role of hope in hedonistic and eudaimonistic dimensions of subjective well-being. Five questionnaires were applied: Scale of Hope, BHI-12 Questionnaire, Satisfaction with Life Scale, PANAS-X Scale, Psychological Well-Being Scale. 206 people were subjected to the above methods. The obtained results suggest that hope understood in terms of success and as basic hope is interconnected both with hedonistic and eudaimonistic well-being. Hope for success appears to be a better predictor for a majority of dimensions of well-being, apart from the affective dimension of subjective well-being in which basic hope has a stronger predictive value. The existing connections between hope and hedonistic and eudaimonistic well-being can result from the concept of goals which is deeply embedded in both constructs and has significant motivational roles.

Hope is a significant element of human life. It is very hard to build our everyday life without hope for a better tomorrow. This article presents psychology of hope in Irena Sendlerowa’s social activity which saved about 2500 Jewish children during the Second World War (1939–1945) consists of an introduction, two points which present following issues: in the first point, according to the structure of hope by Józef Kozielecki, there are some elements presented that create active hope: cognitive, emotional, temporal, affiliative, agency. These elements have been faced with life and activities of Irena Sendlerowa. In the second perspective the sources of Irena Sendlerowa’s hope are described: 1. childhood experiences, especially the beauty of family house atmosphere where openness of heart to another human being was visible in particular to people in need. 2. Irena Sendlerowa’s self-confidence not overconfidence had an essential influence and translation into the success of taking actions. 3. belief which has never been expressed by Sendlerowa, although we still can assume that she was a strength, silent support for her actions which can be proved by her own words: “One day I found a small damaged picture with the inscription Jesus, I trust in You! I hid it and had it all the time with me” (Mieszkowska, 2005, s. 200). It is undeniable that Irena Sendlerowa can be a remarkable example how crucial the role of hope is in human life and how much people can do if they live in hope every day.

The article discusses the problem of the relationship of hope for success with the effectiveness of school-to-work transition. 73 graduates (41 women and 32 men) participated in the repeated measure study. The average age of the subjects was M = 24.72; SD = 0.88. The Hope for Success Questionnaire was used. People having jobs at various transition stages demonstrate a higher level of hope for success. Changes in the level of hope at individual stages of transition were also observed. In addition, the level of hope at the preparation stage allows for anticipating employment six months after graduation.

The aim of the study is to examine the difference in the change of anxiety level and of success hope in 6 months prior to leaving exam between groups with different styles of coping with stress. It is assumed that during this period the level of anxiety and hope will change depending on the preferred style of coping. In order to verify the hypotheses a group of 144 high school graduates was tested. The first survey took place 6 months and the other 14 days before final exams. The following tests were used: CISS, STAI, KNS. The results of this study indicate that the overall level of anxiety has increased in the research group and this increase was greatest in the emotions-focused group. However, the level of success hope significantly decreased in the group favoring task-oriented style. There were no significant changes observed in the level of success hope in the remaining groups.

Although dying as the last act of life constitutes part of our earthly existence, death is difficult to accept. Faced with death an individual has always started asking questions about the meaningfulness of his/ her life and life after death. In the contemporary western culture characterized among others by the collapse of the social structures, people very rarely die surrounded by their families as they used to do, but in hospitals, i.e. in isolation, suffering from loneliness, connected to a range of technologically advanced medical devices. Socio-cultural changes have brought about a conviction that death ends human existence. Catholic faith, however, offers hope that death provides access to desirable future events. As a pass-through state death is the end and the beginning, since after death life is transformed. Consequently, we die trustfully hoping to be rewarded with eternal life.

With reference to the feature articles of a Bosnian prose-writer, Aleksander Hemon, the authoress depicts active, yet not sentimental, creative potential of nostalgia that is directed towards the future (and not the past). Hemon’s voice in the matter is turned against the actual state of affairs i.e. the reality of divided Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, the traditional values, once present in Yugoslavia, can ensure a better future for the novelist’s homeland. These values pertain to the community, which facilitates mutual exchange of thoughts and ensures the sense of belonging to a heterogeneous community, as well as hope, which is based on the belief that the future is in the hands of the community and that tomorrow can be better than today.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of the research conducted among men dealing with the divorce crisis was to examine the correlation between the fathers’ hope for success, understood as their confidence in the willpower and competence to overcome difficult situations, and their sense of happiness.THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The main aim of the research was to address the question of whether there exists a correlation between the hope for success and the sense of happiness in fathers dealing with the divorce crisis and, if so, what is the nature of this connection. The study employed Hope for Success Questionnaire (the Polish adaptation of C. Snyder’s Hope Scale). The level of happiness was determined with the use of the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire.THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The disquisition consists of five parts. First, the author introduces the problem and discusses the situation of contemporary fathers dealing with the divorce conflict. The second part outlines the assumptions of the research. Then, the article offers the theoretical framework regarding the hope for success and the sense of happiness. This part is followed by the analysis of the research material. The final part contains a conclusion.RESEARCH RESULTS: The results revealed significant interdependence between the general level of hope for success and willpower, and the sense of happiness of the fathers participating in the study. The analysis of the material concerning the differences in the level of hope for success and the sense of happiness that took into account socio-demographic profile of the respondents displayed statistically significant differences as far as the financial situation of the fathers is concerned.CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: It may be assumed that in the case of fathers interested in the improvement of their relationship with the child after the divorce, the hope for success and conviction about their effectiveness and persistence foster their mental well-being, encourage the adoption of a more optimistic approach, and help find self-acceptance.

Opis:
The article addresses the problem of hope for success among adolescents growing up in migrant families. This issue is related to the problems of social work, family sociology, and psychology of human development. The knowledge of development opportunities for young people from migrant families may be of particular cognitive value for social workers who face the protective potential of the migrant family in practice. Parents’ departure leads to children becoming independent rapidly, and to family influence on the individual’s life becoming shorter. Many researchers deal with the problem of the negative consequences of migration separation for child development. Few works show the development opportunities and potential of people growing up in families that are spatially separated due to migration. The article describes a fragment of youth’s functioning who had to undertake new duties because of their parents’ departure, such as: taking over the care of their siblings, running their household, and looking after their grandparents with whom they live in the absence of their parents. To determine the level of hope for success among those young people, the Hope for Success Questionnaire by Mariola Łaguna, Jerzy Trzebiński, and Mariusz Zięba was used. The study covered 87 teenagers attending upper-secondary schools in Kujawy-Pomerania Province. The control group consisted of young people whose parents did not migrate abroad for economic reasons, while the criterion group consisted of adolescents growing up in disconnected families. Social workers’ activities include providing help to families. The knowledge of the specific functioning of migration families can help to better support such families. The article aims to discuss the issue of adolescents growing up in migrant families who, because of their parents’ economic migration, must face new responsibilities, often typical of an adult and inadequate for their developmental level.

Often considered depressive, Michel Houellebecq’s writing seems to be at the antipodes of hope, even if fragile. In this article, we will attempt to explore the three levels of hope in the author’s work. Hope in Houellebecq’s writing is first presented in a derisory way as a variant of an illusion. It constitutes an evil associated with sexual desires in contemporary hyper-liberalist society. Then, the author stages a positivist utopia, that of immortal neo-humans. But hope does not exist in this post-human society. Finally, by freeing himself from all illusory hopes, the author intends to seek hope in the present, in the manner of Schopenhauerian contemplation. He uses an approach that is both clinical and pathetic and gives a new form to hope that hopes for the unhoped-for.

Opis:
This article examines the way Augustine draws on the theological virtue of hope to address how people should live in times of suffering. Of the three theological virtues – faith, hope, and love – hope is the least explored theme in contemporary Augustinian scholarship. This article develops a framework for Augustine’s model of hope from his Enchiridion and then applies it to select Sermons and Letters. Through this, we see that for Augustine hope does not represent either an anesthetizing, otherworldly vision that neglects suffering or an extreme ascetic embrace of suffering. Rather, hope seeks the transcendent good that acknowledges the profound depth of suffering while also maintaining a vision of happiness to come. Here, Augustine draws on hope to maintain a tension between temporal and eternal life, between the present reality of suffering and the future hope of happiness. We will also see a close connection between hope and its compatriots of faith and love, a connection Augustine utilizes to explore how hope transforms the moral and spiritual principles that guide our actions in the world.

Opis:
Wtedy człowiek kieruje swe kroki z powrotem ku Bogu.
The topic of religious conversions began to be dealt with in psychologist circles at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. At that time it was perceived that the religious life of man influences his attitude and values. Sometimes people who have departed from a preconceived belief at some point in their lives fall into existential emptiness and try to fill the void with another kind of spirituality - universal spirituality, which was and is propagated by people associated with the occult movement called New Age. The announcement of a new vision of spirituality is a trap for people seeking the meaning of life, their own identity or positive values. The stronger the desire to fulfil one’s dreams, in this respect, the weaker the mechanism for assessing one’s profits and losses. Reflection comes later when psychological and spiritual problems begin.

Nadzieja to moc zmiany życia.
The family is the first and the most important educational environment of man. In the family system, all of its members influence each other, and therefore one of the most important components of the overall relationship between family members are parental attitudes. Both the personal and pedagogical culture of family members as well as the culture of family life determines the „culture of joy”. Experiencing joy in the family is done in the course of everyday life. Hope is born in this activity. The experience of joy and the testimony of hope also arise from various life situations, which are usually unique and unexpected. Hope mobilizes to fight the hardships of everyday life. Hope is the power to change life.

Opis:
Introduction: The case of violence against women is an up-to-date topic much publicized in the society. Police data confirm that the number of home interventions increases by the year, with women as the main group of victims of violent behaviour. A number of questions, therefore, arise, inter alia: how do women cope with the difficulties they face, and how do they evaluate their chances for the improvement of their life situation? The aim of the study is to show the styles of coping with stressful situations and the level of hope for the success of women experiencing violence in their marriage. Material and methods: The study covered two groups of women aged 25–35. The research tool was Hope for Success Questionnaire and Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations. The results were subject to statistical analysis. Results: Women experiencing violence in marriage received significantly lower scores on the task-oriented style scale. The same group of women is characterised by significantly higher results obtained on the emotion-oriented style scale. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of the avoidance-oriented style scale. The analysis of the results obtained in the Hope for Success Questionnaire shows that women abused by their husbands do not exhibit much hope for success. Conclusions: Women experiencing violence in marriage apply the emotion-oriented style, whereas women free from violence – the task-oriented style. Both groups surveyed apply the avoidance-oriented style in the same degree. Women abused by their husbands do not achieve high results as far as hope for success is concerned.
Materiał i metody: W badaniu wzięły udział dwie grupy kobiet w wieku 25–35 lat. Narzędzia badawcze stanowiły Hope for Success Questionnaire oraz Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations. Uzyskane wyniki badań poddano analizie statystycznej. Wyniki: Kobiety doświadczające przemocy w małżeństwie uzyskały istotnie niższe wyniki w skali the task-oriented style. Grupa tych samych kobiet charakteryzuje się znacznie wyższymi wynikami uzyskanymi w skali the emotion-oriented style.

Opis:
Hope is a basic way of coming into the reality of human condition and participating in it creatively. It includes the entirety of dynamic processes of becoming human, and at the same time it indicates the longing of every human being – hope for “complete being”. Through indicating the ontological basis of hope we can disprove philosophical stands and opinions refusing metaphysical value of hope, and perceiving it as a subjective disposition, and conclusively as an illusion. Hope realizes itself in specific existence of a subject. Christians, sharing hopes and fears, joys and disappointments with other people, do not confine themselves to purely human horizon because their hope – rooted in faith in Christ – goes beyond the limits of earthliness. The Gospel as the Good News is in its essence the reason of an undeterred hope. Thus, it can be said that supernatural hope incorporates human hopes; precisely it incorporates those hopes which are worthy human being and correspond with the truth about humans. The work of an educator is above all work with human hope. Working with human hope, an educator makes an effort to develop in their wards their own personal hope. Therefore, an educator confronts their wards as persons and not as a material which can be freely shaped. In this sense an educator is someone who concentrates on what should be and not on what is now.

Opis:
Kontemplując wydarzenia Jej życia, Kościół odnajduje w osobie i życiu Maryi swój paradygmat nadziei. Wreszcie widzimy Maryję jako znak pewnej nadziei na drodze każdego człowieka zdążającego ku Bogu. Udział Maryi w realizacji dzieła naszego zbawienia i Jej obecność w Kościele wskazuje nam fundament i cel naszej nadziei: Boga, który obdarza stworzenie możliwością wiecznego udziału w Jego Boskim życiu miłości.
The believer's hope is based on his faithfulness to God's love that is shown in the beauty of salvation, whose image is the Blessed Virgin Mary. However, the mystery of man's salvation constantly needs its ecclesial actualization. In the present reflection we put the question about the presence of the Virgin Mary on the way of a full realization of man's hope. Her presence as that of a Mother and Teacher, who – as the latest Council stresses – “does […] shine forth on earth, until the day of the Lord shall come, as a sign of sure hope and solace to the people of God during its sojourn on earth”. Giving our attention to the nature of Mary's hope we notice that it is built on the foundation of the relation of faith between Her and God. Undoubtedly the mystery of Annunciation is a test of the Virgin Mary's faith, and at the same time of Her hope. Mary assumes a deeply dynamic attitude here, pinning Her full hope upon God's grace. This attitude accompanies Her during Her whole life. Then, a view of Mary's hope in the ecclesial dimension is important. It has two complementary elements, as the Virgin Mary is at the same time a member of God's new people and their Mother. Contemplating the events in Her life the Church finds in Mary's person and life its paradigm of hope. And finally, we can see Mary as a sign of a certain hope on the way of every man heading towards God. Mary's participation in the realization of our salvation, and Her presence in the Church shows us the foundation and the aim of our hope: God, who grants the creation the possibility to eternally participate in His Divine life of love.
