The word mneme, “memory”, appears 16 times in the Histories of Herodotus. The author, using the philological analysis of all its occurrences, investigates not only its significance in specific contexts but also defines and names functions that the word has in its place of use. Finally, the author classifies the identified meanings of the word mneme (in combination with the accompanying verbs) and compares its functions (as defined by the context).

In the present investigation, 15 first term university students were faced with 80 context-based idioms in English (L2) and Swedish (L1) respectively, 30 of which were in the source domain of animals, commonly used in both languages, and asked to explain their meaning. The idioms were of varying frequency and transparency. Three main research questions were thus addressed:1. How well do students master idioms in their L2 as compared to their L1?2. How do (a) degrees of transparency, (b) idiom frequency and (c) the choice of source domain affect students’ L1 and L2 comprehension?3. To what extent is context used when interpreting L1 and L2 idioms? Results show that while the frequency of an idiom does not appear to play a part in whether it is comprehended or not in either language, the degree of transparency is of great importance in students’ L2. Also, students make extensive use of context in their L2.

The issues raised in the article focus on the ways of communicating family narratives from the perspective of reflection on this type of historical writing by the history of historiography. An expression of this reflection is the proposed classification of narrative strategies and genre types of narration within the set of family histories, and the conceptual category of family histories, which captures this set and opens the field for further discussions on the phenomenon of private family narratives.

Opis:
The specific nature of Late Antique Church histories in comparison with Greco-Roman historiography is understood as both the outcome of the difference in the narrative’s subject and the particular method of its performance. Apparently, the Church historians’ growing interest in the traditional theme of wars seems to account for this approaching to the “classical” patterns and the blurring of the genre’s specific character. The author argues that this “assimilation” phenomenon was essentially the consequence of the proximity of the main subject of the narration, the history of the Church represented as a story of conflict, while – as the present analysis of some relevant sections from the work of the Church historian Socrates has demonstrated – the narrative of the history of wars would rather play the role of a digression in this narration and the “Divine” commentary on the events being depicted, thus hindering rather than facilitating the assimilating of the “Church History” to the norms determined by the so-called Zeitgeschichten.

This is a book review of the volume edited by Roberta Piazza and Alessandra Fasulo, and entitled Marked Identities. Narrative Lives Between Social Labels and Individual Biographies, Palgrave Macmillan, London-New York, 2015. The book consists of various interviews with individuals whose lives, mainly because of the group to which they belong, could be viewed as ‘marked’. The difference between the idea of ‘stigma’ and the notion ‘marked identity’ is underlined, together with the idea of ‘diversity’, which today is not necessarily something that one should hide but, quite the opposite, something one can be proud of. One of the main ideas of this text is that identity is not a rigid reality but a process, by which individuals negotiate the version of who they are with others.

With the emergence of COVID-19 in the U.S., many LGBTQ people found ourselves reflecting upon the early years of HIV/AIDS and how our communities responded to the lack of robust federal and state response to this preceding public health crisis. As the leaders of the Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center (BSC) in eastern Pennsylvania became a central resource for our community sharing up-to-date information about COVID-19 and organizing vaccine clinics, they also recognized the historic nature of this moment as many elders in our community consistently tried to make sense of the current crisis by contemplating their past AIDS activism and organizing. In March of 2020, BSC staff and archivists received grant funding to conduct an oral history project called “40 Years of Public Health in the LGBTQ Community: Collecting and Curating Local LGBTQ Health Experiences From HIV/AIDS to COVID-19,” which recorded both timely commentary on the impact of COVID-19 on LGBTQ people and memories of HIV/AIDS organizing that seemed urgent and relevant to our contemporary moment. Offering excerpts from oral histories collected in 2020, this piece explores how COVID-19 spurred LGBTQ people in the Lehigh Valley to share stories about communal grief, health inequity, political responses to pandemics, and organizing to support the health of minoritized communities.

The present study uses oral interviews with foreign language learners in search of influential factors in their language learning histories. The sample for the study was drawn from a larger sample of intermediate/advanced learners of English as a foreign language with a minimum of 10 years of exposure/instruction. The sample includes 6 early learners (range of starting age: 3.2-6.5) and 6 late learners (starting age: 11+). Half of them in each group were among those with the highest scores on two English language tests in the larger sample and half among those with the lowest scores on those same tests. A qualitative analysis of the interviews of these learners yields insights into their experience of foreign language learning and the role played in it by starting age and other significant factors, such as motivation and intensive contact with the language.

The monitored case of deep excavation works located in the centre of Warsaw is described and back analysed as a boundary value problem with the finite element method. The excavation was carried out in over-consolidated clayey layers under the support of braced diaphragm walls. Accurate simulation of such soil-structure interaction problems requires advanced soil constitutive models – especially for the pre-failure range of small strains. On the other hand, such models should not be very complex and their material parameters should be relatively simple to obtain from laboratory and in situ surveys. By means of a case study, this paper examines several simple elasto-plastic constitutive models for the simulation of the behaviour of soil layers. The influence of such characteristics of the soil behaviour, as anisotropy and non-linearity of stiffness, is studied in the paper. The discussion concerns the problems related to the application of the models for a practical example. The comparison is focused on the obtained and measured displacements of the neighbouring building and diaphragm walls.

This article aims at studying the mobility of Polish highly skilled female workers who live in Italy, and at analysing their integration into the society and the labour market, with particular reference to the problem of brain waste. Using the biographical approach we analyse the reasons for migration from a transnational perspective. We highlight the active role of the Polish social network that explains the high presence of Polish people in Rome, determined by more than purely economic reasons. Eventually, in the light of brain waste, we try to understand the role of the academic and career paths by looking into possible problems related to the adequate utilisation of professional competences and acknowledgement of the level of educational attainment.

The article contains reflections on changes in biographical writing, especially biography of persons of heterogenous ethnic identity. The biographies are not only reconstructions of an individual’s life, but also a clear testimony and reflection of changes in collective consciousness. It turns out that biographies also discover, in a peculiar way, the author’s identity, who, in the process of selection and creation of a biographical text, reveals a part of their own history. This aspect is clearly seen in texts by second and third generation Holocaust survivors, and is demonstrated by interpretations of Magdalena Tulli’s Włoskie szpilki [Italian High Heels] and Piotr Paziński’s Pensjonat [Boarding house].

Bilet powrotny (1978) Ewy i Czesława Petelskich kończy zatrzymany w stopklatce krzyk głównej bohaterki. Gest ten autor ujmuje metaforycznie, dostrzegając w nim nadciągającą pod koniec lat 70. XX w. katastrofę całej kultury lewicowej. Kadr ten zapowiada blokadę w kinie polskim narracji emancypacyjnych (ludu, kobiet) i stopniowe wymazywanie z przestrzeni kultury tradycji lewicowej.
Bilet powrotny (Return Ticket, 1978) by Ewa and Czesław Petelski ends with the main heroine’s scream captured in a freeze frame. The author of the article takes this gesture metaphorically, perceiving in it the impending catastrophe of the whole left-wing culture in the late 1970s. This frame heralds the imminent constraint on (people’s, women’s) emancipation narratives in Polish cinema and the gradual erasure of the left-wing tradition from the cultural field. The author analyses the various subjects of emancipation intersecting in Petelskis’ film. The image of the heroine, who is subjected to double subjugation, i.e., due to class (poverty) and gender (patriarchy), makes him ask, on the one hand, if the project of emancipation of social classes perpetuates the oppression of women. On the other hand, does the project of women’s emancipation dismantle class inequalities? Researchers and artists (but not filmmakers) have returned to the problem of repressed folk histories and class conflicts in the second decade of the 21st century, which suggests that the image of the subjugated others from Bilet powrotny, captured in a freeze frame, will be unlocked in Polish culture.

This article centres on the issue of family chronicles and their distinctive features. The chronicles fall into the category of private narratives dealing with family history which, in view of the sources and research rules on which they are based, come close to works recognized as falling within the field of historiography. Drawing on examples of twentieth-century chronicles, the author analyses the issue in the broad context of other genre forms belonging to the category of family histories.

This article presents two foreign or second language (L2) learner histories representing the extreme ends of the spectrum of learner well-being. One story reflects the very positive learning experiences of a highly strategic learner, while the other story focuses on a less strategic learner’s negative, long-lasting responses to a single traumatic episode. The theoretical framework comes from the concept of well-being in positive psychology (with significant adaptations). In addition to contrasting the two cases through the grounded theory approach, the study suggests that the adapted well-being framework is useful for understanding L2 learning experiences, even when the experiences are negative.

Opis:
Besides its historical values which imply a certain “accuracy” in presenting historical events and people, it is also possible to stipulate in Herodotus’ Histories these fragments which belong only to the domain of fiction, a genre literature whose basic substratum consists primarily in the description of the world seen through the eyes of the narrator-witness (histōr). In case of Histories, it is difficult to explicitly define how much of it is history and how much is literature. Nevertheless, it is certain that Histories are a special kind of storytelling, which, as shown by a closer analysis, is based on a personal and vicarious experience of the historian and his oral sources that cover several dozens of years of conflict between the East and the West, intertwined with historical, geographical and ethnological descriptions of Greek and barbaric tribes. In such a context the paper will focus on presenting a twofold nature of Herodotean discourse, revealing, on the one hand, the “rising” of the oral history from the sheer activity of dialoguing with people about the recent past, reconstructed on the basis of its formal and cognitive structure (Fludernik 1996), and, on the other hand, the technique of emplotment (White 1973) used by Herodotus to make the story reportable and tellable within the realm of an epic convention which was vivid and influenced the Archaic and Classical Greek literary texts of his times.

The purpose of this article is to analyse the intensity of unemployment leaving in relation to the length of an unemployed person's work seniority. A hypothesis was made that its intensity changes depending of that person's employment history and on its gender as well as education. The research material consisted of individual data of21,398 unemployed people registered by the Poviat Labour Office (PUP) in Szczecin in 2012 and observed throughout 2013. The author used the event history analysis, which was conducted in three steps. First, the author assessed the likelihood of remaining unemployed depending on the unemployment period. Secondly, she divided the registered unemployed into groups according to their employment history and determined the relationship between the employment intensity and the span of time when the members of those groups remained registered in PUP. In the third step, she used the average hazard rates to compare the intensities of unemployment leaving in individual groups. (original abstract)

The studies of present religious situation in Eastern Europe based mainly on quantitative surveys show differencesfrom the Western Europe secularization process and detect more contradictory changes here, but they only draw inferences on the religious past about the post-Soviet situation in different Middle and Eastern European countries. The novelty of this study is to analyze how former social experiences have influenced the social life of present formal believers and the religious indifferent in Lithuania, who are representedby numerous vague Catholics as well as an indefinite group of religious indifferent formed during the Soviet regime and due to the peculiarities of their social and personal experiences. Two types of empirical research methods (quantitative and qualitative) are used for the research question, applying the development principlein a sequence with the ‘quantitative preliminary’ and ‘qualitative follow-up’ for elaboration, enhancement, illustration, and clarification of the results from one method with the results from the other one. This yieldsa better understanding of the religious attitudes and social behavior of this group. Meanwhile the complementarity principle, where two methods of empirical research are used to assess different aspects in forming a new social group of vague Catholics and religious indifferent, gives possibility to analyze how the experiences of the Soviet regime manifestthemselvesin their personal lives of the post-Soviet situation with forming a specific phenomenon in the direction of religious identity and general social orientations. On the basisof oral life histories three types of religious indifference are distinguished.

This paper consists of four parts. The first one provides a short commentary on the oral tradition of the Histories, and the second, third, and fourth parts focus on the analysis of some passages of Herodotus’ work in view of his oral discourse. Consequently, the following categories of Herodotus’ poetics are discussed: the compositional structure of the work, the mutual relations of its components, i.e. plots, episodes etc. and the narrator’s construction. The last part contains a brief recapitulation of the results in several points:— Herodotus shapes the events and heroes in his History in view of the figures provided by oral literature, i.e. he confers on them a heroic dimension that intends them be remembered and honoured. This is especially so in the parts that are strictly stories. Herodotus here plays the role of a third-person narrator. His narration is more discrete, allusive, and dramatised through which he wishes to reach a broader audience that is accustomed to rapsodic competitions and theatrical performances popular in those days;—The narration of the Histories is based on the episodic structure composed of a series of brief stories linked with one another by means of sentences. These sentences trace the direction of the story, and this in turn orientate the story-teller and listener to a more complete reception of the verbal message;—The narration of the Histories additionally contains stereotypical thematic lines, together with a schematic structure of plots and a typological image of figures. This enables their multiple usage in the process of oral and spontaneous presentation of parts of the work.

The article consists of three parts: the first which illustrates the particular structure of the plot stated in the title, the second which explains the origin of the structure of the plot and the third which summarizes the whole content. In the first part, after analyzing 26 examples of the plot taken from Herodotus’ Histories, it is possible to sketch the structural pattern of “the wise adviser” plot. It depicts the so-called patterns of history that are executed in the characters and events within the narrative. Moreover, those patterns are characteristic of the Herodotean narrative as such. They can bring to mind the technique of “ring-composition” discerned in the Homeric poems the Iliad and the Odyssey and also in the Histories of Herodotus. The second part of the article concentrates on the origin of the structure of “the wise adviser” plot. That is, it attempts to give the answer on the question of how and why the plot was moulded the way it was. This problem is explained by the Havelock’s “oral rules” applied to the oral work and composition and also by the Ong’s “memory rules”. On their basis it is allowed to name the Herodotean narrative as the “oral narrative” that meets the expectations of the oral communication in the strict narrative genre. The third part summarizes the preceding parts and draws some conclusions.

Opis:
Human and divine spheres of activity continuously alternate each other within the pages of the Herodotean Histories – they take the shape of a constant struggle between the two “world ends”. This struggle materializes in the lot of particular characters like Croesus’ or Xerxes’ rise and fall, when the kings try in vain to stand up to supernatural powers, which have already prepared their own blueprint of the earthly history. Furthermore, it materializes in the figure of wise adviser, who becomes as if the embodiment of human attempts to free oneself from the dim dictatorship of the jealous deity. Finally, it is revealed in the very moment of making crucial decisions. Dreams and oracles, as they appeare, serve the role of specific devices in the hands of divine and also the most approachable way for human discovery of the fated future. The consistent theology within Histories does not exist at all. Herodotus’ conviction (given expressis verbis or put in the mouth of his characters) about the existence of fate, ruling even the gods, about divine retribution – τίσις – or about the jealousy of the deities – φϑόνος, are ingrained into the religious thinking of Herodotus’ time. For he belonged, even by virtue of his pedigree, to the world of religious conservatism, comparable to that of Aeschylus, Sophocles, or other Greek thinkers of the Vth-century Hellade.

A study of two 100-person groups of juvenile delinquents born in 1959 was conducted in the years 1981‒1985 at the Department of Criminology, Institute of Legal Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences. The first (experimental) group consisted of boys randomly selected from the total of 225 juveniles born in 1959 who had committed at least on offence while intoxicated. The other (control) group were 100 randomly juveniles selected from the entire population of 8196 juvenile delinquents born in 1959. None of the juveniles selected for the experimental group happened to find themselves in the control group as well. As shown by the findings, the juveniles who had committed at least one offence while intoxicated were much more demoralized as a group than the whole of juvenile delinquents. It seemed interesting, therefore, to follow the further fates of both groups as adults. The follow-up period was 7 years; until that time, all of the examined persons reached the age of 25 when the average Polish man be- comes stabilized to some extent, having graduated from university, worked for several or a dozen years (upon completion of secondary or elementary education respectively), and frequently having also established a family.  Data on the life situation of the young men from both examined groups on their 25th birthday were obtained from the following four sources: ‒ the Central Register of Convicted Persons kept  by the Ministry of Justice, and the Register of Convicted and Detained Persons where criminal records of the entire sample were checked; ‒ files of criminal cases of all men with criminal records (47.0% of the experimental and 35.0% of the control group); the files concerned criminal proceedings before common courts for offences committed after coming of age; ‒ questionnaire survey of 63.0% of the experimental and 66.0% of the control group; ‒ inquiry submitted to the sobering-up stations concerning the entire sample. As shown by the findings, 24.0% of the experimental and 13.0% of the control group established their own families before the age of 25. The proportions are high, as regards the experimental group in particular: erly in the 1980s, the newly married constituted about 10% of the total male population aged 20‒24 in Poland. The mean educational level was higher in the control compared to the experimental group; this concerns first  and foremost  cases of education higher than the elmementary technical (of which there were two in the experimental compared to ten in the control group). Moreover, no cases of illiteracy could be found in the control group, compared to one such case in the experimental group. Of all the men of the experimental group concerning whom data could be obtained, 80.4% had a regular job, and 19.6% stayed out of job or worked casually. Of the control group, 80.0% had a regular job (33% combining job with school), 18.3% stayed out of job or worked casually, and one person had entered university. The number of convicted persons in the experimental group (47) was larger compared to the control group (35) by 12.0%, the difference being significant. Also relapse into crime was higher in the expenmental group (l5 vs. 11 cases). The first offence committed by those convicted as young adults was mainly one against property: 35 cases in the experimental group (66.0% of all those convicted) and 28 cases in the control group (80.0%). The second most frequent offence of members of the experimental group was an aggressive act: against life and health, freedom, personal dignity and inviolability (10 persons, i.e. 18.8% of all those convicted). The offences of this type included: bodily injury (Art. 156 of the penal code – 3 persons, i.e. 6.4%); participation in a brawl or beating (Art. 158 and 159 – 1 person, i.e. 2.1%); infringement of bodily inviolability (Art. 182 – 3 persons, i.e. 6.4%); assault against a public functionary (Art. 233 and 234 – 1 person, i.e. 2.1%); insult against  a public functionary (Art. 236 – 1 person, i.e. 2.1%). In the control group, 6 cases of such offences could be found (9.1% of all those convicted);  yet the only offence under Art. 148 1 of the penal code, that is homicide, had been committed by a member of that goup. The other discussed figures and proportions were respectively: Art. l58, 159 – 3 persons, i.e. 8.6%; Art. 182 – 1 person (2.9%); Art. 233, 234 – 1 person (2.9%); and Art. 236 – 1   person (29%). Beside offences, the two groups manifested also other synptoms of social maladjustment. The symptoms found most often in both groups were: “contacts with persons known to the police as delinquent” and stays at the sobering-up station. As regards the experimental group, the third frequent symptom were brawls in the place of residence followed by bad opinion with neighbors, hooliganism, and avoidance of work. In the control group, avoidance of work ranked third, followed by bad opinion with neighbors, hooliganism, and brawls at the place of residence. This ranking of frequency of the symptoms of social maladjustment points to a greater aggressiveness of the young men from the experimental group. On the 63 young men from the experimental group concerning whom data  could be obtained, 62 (98.0%) drank alcohol. In the control group 59 (89.0%) of the 66 concerning whom data could be obtained were drinkers. The group of drinkers included all those who had drunk several times a week already  as juveniles, and 70% of those who had drunk once a week. In the control group, drinkers included 91.7% of those who had drunk as juvoniles (11 of 12 cases). Of those who had drunk as juveniles in the control group, 66.7% (8 cases) were convicted as adults. As shown by the discussed data, young men from the experimental group – those who committed as juveniles at least one offence while intoxicated prove much inferior in terms of the social situation  to other men who also committed offences as juveniles but did not drink alcohol. Therefore, early alcohol consumption among juvenile delinquents is an important factor of a negative prognosis as to the further fates of such persons. A number of postulates have been formulated, addressed at the prosecuting agencies, criminal justice, and institutions designed to assist persons in extraordinary situation. With respect to the present sample, all such postulates acquire special importance and must be met without fail.

Opis:
The article deals with the presence of reflections on emancipation and women’s rights in alternative and steampunk stories. The author points out that in both of the above‑mentioned genres of fantasy literature, these issues are not an overarching theme, despite the fact that criticism and subversive rewriting of past eras from the point of view of the present is inherent in these genres. The analysis shows that anachronically conceived emancipation of women takes place mainly in novels set in historical eras far removed from the present (deep antiquity and, far less frequently, the Middle Ages). Novels closer to contemporaneity, set in the 18th and 19th centuries, generally do not subject emancipation and women’s rights to alternative reflection. This is all the more astonishing if one bears in mind the fact that the 19th century was time of the birth of the feminist and suffragette movements. This reluctance to rework the nineteenth century from the point of view of women’s emancipation is due to the still active cultural memory of the period. The author’s thesis is that the unwillingness to rework the issues of emancipation and women’s rights in an alternative way is related to the still active cultural paradigm, founded, among others, on the Judeo‑Christian tradition. Another reason is the domination of ‘hegemonic masculinity’ in alternative and steampunk, which is a literary, phantasmatic reaction to the dynamic processes of women’s emancipation taking place in the actual world.

The aim in this article is to present the life and work of Zofia Ernst (1918–1994), an ardent connoisseur of Italian culture and literature and an accomplished translator of Italian books for adults and children. Drawing on D’hulst’s historiographic model (2001, 2010) and Kaczmarek’s topobiographical approach (2013), I address key moments in Ernst’s life. The focus on the life story of this one translator helps me outline the milieu in which she lived and worked as well as show her impact on how the representations of Italian literature took shape in Poland before 1994. I also explore translations of Italian literature for children and young adults that Zofia Ernst produced for the Polish publisher Nasza Księgarnia during the period of 1954–1974, as they still form an under-examined field.

Opis:
Materiał badawczy stanowi zbiór trzynastu gawęd zatytułowany Opowieści sołtysa, autorstwa Stefana Szota – długoletniego i nadal piastującego swoją funkcję sołtysa Iwkowej. Gwara odgrywa tam rolę niezwykle ważnego budulca wiejskiej społeczności i przekaziciela treści kulturowych. Gwara w Opowieściach sołtysa nierzadko stanowi miernik przynależności do iwkowskiej wspólnoty językowo-kulturowej, gdyż pełne zrozumienie treści ukrytych w przywołanych w tekście przezwiskach, mikrotoponimach i nazwach przysiółków (w fonetycznej postaci gwarowej) wymaga dobrej orientacji w lokalnych realiach.
The research material is comprised of the collection of 13 tales entitled The Mayor’s Tales by Stefan Szot, a long time mayor of Iwkowa village, who is still in office. The dialect used in The Mayor’s Tales (Opowieści sołtysa) plays a fundamental role in the village community and serves as a carrier of cultural content. Identification with a given area (Iwkowa) takes place, to a great extent, by means of the local dialect. The author authenticates the utterances of his characters by writing their words using the Pogórze dialect and incorporating expressive local characteristics, which are especially visible at the phonetic level (e.g. lack of the front nasal vowel, pronouncing -ro as -re, mazuration) and lexical level. Dialectal lexemes appear also in the narration emphasizing close connection between the dialect and the material and non-material products of traditional culture (without appellation in standard Polish language). The dialect used in The Mayor’s Tales very often serves as a measure of membership in the language and cultural community of Iwkowa, as the ability to fully understand the content hidden in the quoted nicknames, microtoponyms, and names of hamlets (in their phonetic dialect form) is dependent on good knowledge of local reality.

Opis:
This article is about Estonian literary histories that were written and published in exile between years 1944-1991 by Estonian writers and scholars. The aim of this article is to introduce Estonian literary histories published in exile as multifaceted cultural texts that are arranging the literary practise, convey the cultural self-consciousness and at the same time are mirroring the cultural situations in which they are written and published. I will describe and analyse the Estonian literary histories published in exile by exile Estonians as cultural texts which are mirroring the cultural processes taking place in the exile community between years 1944-1991. The theoretical background of my article rises mainly from Tartu-Moscow school and its observations about cultural dynamics and autocommunication.

Opis:
In sociological and anthropological studies, people often appear as anonymous representatives of their groups. The question arises of what we could learn about them if we had the opportunity, even many years later, to discover their identities. The author answers this question by a case study derived from Józef Chałasiński’s classic work ‘The Younger Generation of Peasants’ (1938), which was based on life histories submitted to a competition for rural youth. On the basis of memories, documents, and other sources, the author of the present article reconstructs the biography of a peasant from Central Poland, Józef Próchniak (1876–1934) from the village of Dęba. Appearing marginally as ‘Józef’ in one of the life histories submitted to the competition, he is revealed to have been a person of rich biography. This article describes Próchniak’s relations with his social environment and with broader history and is a sociological account of one hundred years of history in his village and neighbourhood. The example demonstrates the misconceptions that exist about ‘classes without history’ and shows that writingthe history of ‘ordinary people’ is possible.

Opis:
The article discusses the principal “Herodotean question” of the completeness of the work done by the historian. How well did Herodotus manage to accomplish his design? Should we regard his work in the form it has reached us as complete and integral? Or does it end abruptly at the events of 479/8 BC, despite “the Father of History” having planned to continue his account of the Greek-Persian wars? Over the last century and a half, pluralism in the views the researchers on the issue of the completeness of Herodotus’ work has emerged. The author ventures some observations on the finale of the The Histories and draws our attention to the passage Hdt. 9.121 in which Herodotus emphasizes the fact that the barbarians transgressing the geographical boundaries of Europe had been punished: the cables of the bridges which the Persians had used to tie Asia and Europe were taken to Hellas by the victors. According to the author, the historian’s testimony τὰ ὅπλα τῶν γεφυρέων ὡς ἀναθήσοντες ἐς τὰ ἱρά symbolizes the end of the war against the Barbarian, hence, the accomplishment of Herodotus’ design – the completion of the account of “great and marvellous deeds done by Greeks and foreigners and especially the reason why they warred against each other”.
