    Celem niniejszego artykułu jest opis oryginalnej i rewolucyjnej, jak na ówczesne czasy, koncepcji nauczania zwanej Laboratoryjnym Planem Daltońskim lub Planem Daltońskim, która powstawała w toku niezwykłego życia oddanej i ambitnej, a jednocześnie niezwykle skromnej reformatorki światowej edukacji – Helen Parkhurst. Przedstawiono krótko biografię samej twórczyni, cele edukacji daltońskiej, główne założenia oraz refleksje nauczycieli pracujących zgodnie z założeniami Planu Daltońskiego w latach 30. XX w. Ta rewolucyjna koncepcja, mimo upływu stu lat od jej powstania, wciąż jest obecna w przestrzeni naukowej i praktycznej, inspirując do nowatorskiej pracy wielu nauczycieli prawdziwie zaangażowanych w mądrą edukację dzieci i młodzieży.
    The aim of this article is to describe an original and revolutionary, as for the times, concept of teaching called the Dalton Laboratory Plan or the Dalton Plan, which has been founded by a widely committed, ambitious and humble reformer of world education – Helen Parkhurst. The biography of the founder, the goals of Dalton education, its main assumptions and teachers’ reflections who work in accordance with the Dalton Plan provision in the 1930s are briefly presented. Since its foundation, this revolutionary concept of teaching continues to thrive in education and teaching practices, inspiring many involved practitioners, teachers and children to apply this innovative style of work.

    Celem artykułu jest ukazanie spójnej narracji prekursorów klasycznych koncepcji edukacji alternatywnej dotyczącej dziecka i jego pozycji w procesie kształcenia. Ich uwspólnione poglądy ujmują dziecko w kategoriach podmiotu aktywnego, sprawczego i zaangażowanego we własny rozwój i życie społeczne. W tekście ukazano poglądy wiodących prekursorów pedagogiki alternatywnej, które wzmacniają ujęcie dziecka-agensa. Szczególnie silnie wyakcentowano idee pedagogiczne Helen Parkhurst, twórczyni koncepcji edukacyjnej zwanej Planem Daltońskim. Koncepcję tę uczyniono praktyczną egzemplifikacją obrazu dziecka-ucznia, jaki wyłania się z rozważań autorek tekstu, które naświetliły jedynie wybrane wątki z niezwykle bogatej spuścizny twórców alternatywnych nurtów edukacji. Do realizacji założonego celu wykorzystano metodę analizy i interpretacji treści zawartych w materiałach źródłowych i rekonstruowanych (Silverman 2008). Poglądy klasyków koncepcji alternatywnych są nadal niezwykle aktualne i w zasadzie w niewielkim stopniu obecne w praktyce polskich szkół. Współcześnie wiele mówi się o konieczności aktywnej partycypacji ucznia w procesie własnego rozwoju, a postulat ten czyni się sztandarowym założeniem wprowadzanych reform oświatowych czy innowacyjnych programów kształcenia, ale tylko niewielu uczniów rzeczywiście tego doświadcza.
    The aim of this article is to present the unified approach of classic concepts of alternative education of a child and their role in education. The empowered views of the pioneers of modern education placed the child at the center as an active and engaged pupil. The text discusses views and approaches that strengthen this concept. It has been strongly emphasised in the vision of pedagogy formulated by Helen Parkhurst, the founder of Dalton Plan. Her idea of education has since become an exemplary and practical illustration of a child presented as a pupil, an approach that has shed new light on selected threads from the extremely rich heritage of authors representing alternative educational trends. In order to achieve the intended aim, the researchers employed a method of analysis and interpretation of content from both source and reconstructed materials (Silverman 2008). The views of classic authors representing alternative conceptions are still extremely relevant but in fact are largely absent from the practice of Polish schools. Today there is much talk about the need for students to actively participate in the process of their development, and this postulate is positioned as a crucial premise for introducing educational or innovative reforms in school curriculums, although not many students actually get to experience it.

    Opis:
    The organisation of the work system in the dalton plan is based on the three main rules: the study of freedom (responsibility); the study of independence; the study of cooperation. It was described by Helen Purkhaurst, the American teacher, at the beginning of the twentieth century. She introduced her ideas in the book entitled: „Education on the Dalton Plan. According to her assumptions, the Dalton Plan enables to adapt the speed of learning to the real child’s possibilities, it teaches to depend on yourself, developes initiative and indepen-dence both in doing and thinking, inspires to search for the best and the easiest ways of working, it teaches the sense of responsibility for doing the taken exercise, it initiates child to self learn and to compatible education between the teacher and student. The child doing the Dalton education chooses the way of performing, which he or she wants to, he or she can learn alone or in a group, and can adjust the speed of learning to his/her abilities. Helen Purkhaurst thought that in order to start to work with a child, one need to know him/her very well and precisely look at his/her progress in education. That is why the pro-posed by Helen Purkhaurst model of the Dalton education is flexible, it is changed and can be fit according to place and time. It does not marginalize the individual features of a child, but leads them to form and develop. The Dalton Plan and so relies on the individuation of the work with every child. On taking action, rather than appealing to ready, of solutions, for the search and the drawing of inferences already for the youngest years.

    The Dalton Plan’s pedagogy was established by H. Parkhurst 100 years ago; but it is still valued and commonly applied in preschool and early school education. In this article; I intend to present different ways of implementing the Dalton Plan into teaching English at these stages. First; I will discuss the history of the Dalton Plan; and then I shall describe its founder and outline the main assumptions of the concept. Next; I will present how the Dalton Plan has developed worldwide; in particular in Poland; and I will discuss the current application of the Dalton Plan in the school environment. In the second part; I will present H. Parkhurst’s practical teaching strategies which can be effectively used in teaching English to children. I intend this article to be not only an inspiration for teachers teaching different foreign languages but also as an encouragement for practitioners to reflect on their work and perhaps expand their practice with new teaching strategies that would promote independence; responsibility; cooperation and reflection. Applying the Dalton Plan in everyday teaching allows teachers to personalise children’s learning and supports the development of children’s linguistic and social skills; which; in turn; facilitates the main objective of education.
    Mimo że pedagogika planu daltońskiego stworzona została przez H. Parkhurst sto lat temu; to nadal jest użyteczna i chętnie wykorzystywana w pracy z dziećmi zarówno w wieku przedszkolnym; jak i wczesnoszkolnym. W niniejszym artykule zaprezentowano sposoby wykorzystania elementów planu daltońskiego na lekcjach języka angielskiego. W jego pierwszej części przedstawiony jest zarys historyczny powstania planu daltońskiego; krótkie przybliżenie postaci twórczyni oraz główne założenia koncepcji. Następnie opisano rozwój idei na świecie i w Polsce oraz przybliżono współczesną realizację filarów planu daltońskiego. W drugiej części artykułu podano praktyczne rozwiązania; możliwe do wykorzystania na lekcjach języka angielskiego; zgodne z założeniami koncepcji H. Parkhurst. Założeniem autorki jest zainspirowanie nauczycieli języków obcych do poszukiwania nowych metod i zachęcenie ich do poszerzenia swojego warsztatu o narzędzia rozwijające u dzieci samodzielność; odpowiedzialność; współpracę oraz refleksję. Praca zgodnie z założeniami tej koncepcji pozwala na indywidualizację pracy ucznia oraz rozwój zarówno językowy; jak i społeczny; co zmierza do realizacji nadrzędnego celu; jakim jest wspieranie wszechstronnego rozwoju dziecka.
