Opis:
This study presents root colonization of Deschampsia cespitosa growing in the immediate vicinity of a former Pb/Zn smelter by arbuscular mycorhizal fungi (AMF) and dark septated endophytes (DSE) at different soil depths. AMF spores and species distribution in soil profile were also assessed. Arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) and DSE were found in D. cespitosa roots at all investigated soil levels. However, mycorrhizal colonization in topsoil was extremely low with sporadically occurring arbuscules. AM parameters: frequency of mycorrhization of root fragments (F%), intensity of root cortex colonization (M%), intensity of colonization within individual mycorrhizal roots (m%), and arbuscule abundance in the root system (A%) were markedly higher at 20–40, 40–60 cm soil levels and differed in a statistically significant manner from AM parameters from 0–10 and 10–20 cm layers. Mycorrhizal colonization was negatively correlated with bioavailable Cd, Pb and Zn concentrations. The number of AMF spores in topsoil was very low and increased with soil depth (20–40 and 40–60 cm). At the study area spores of three morphologically distinctive AMF species were found: Archaeospora trappei, Funneliformis mosseae and Scutellospora dipurpurescens. The fourth species Glomus tenue colonized roots of D. cespitosa and was observed in the root cortex at 20–40 and 40–60 soil depth, however, its spores were not found at the site.

Opis:
Four metals (Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd) were assayed in soils within the impact zone of the Miasteczko Slaskie Zinc Smelter (southern Poland). The investigated area is afforested and has been subjected for a long time to intensive deposition of metal-bearing dusts. Soil pHKCl varied broadly from very acidic (pHKCl = 3.4) to slightly alkaline (pHKCl = 7.2). Organic carbon (Corg) content fluctuated within a large range, i.e., 5.5 - 66.4 g kg-1, whereas the cation exchange capacity (CEC) was in most cases markedly low (from 1.4 to 5.9 cmol(+)kg-1), with exception for two sites (C and D) exhibiting values of 26.8 and 15.1 cmol(+)kg-1, respectively. Total Zn, Pb and Cd contents exceeded manifold their respective levels in the Earth crust (reference value - RV)) as well as those suggested as background levels for Poland (BLP). The assessment of the contamination of soils by these metals was undertaken on the basis of geoaccumulation indices (lgeo), contamination factors Cl and degrees of contamination (Cdeg). The overall metal contamination represented practically two classes: low contamination for Cu; considerable to extreme contamination (in ascending order) for Zn, Cd, and Pb. The contribution (BLP-based assessment) of each metal to the degree of contamination index varied from 2.14 % (for Cu), via 26.33% (for Zn) to quite equally for Cd and Pb, both representing 35.22% and 36.32, respectively. It is worth pointing out that copper was the sole metal to threaten the least (Figure 1) the soils of the investigated ecosystem.

Opis:
Próbki odpadów i gleb zbierano w lipcu 2004 r., a następnie poddawano analizom fizykochemicznym. W próbkach oznaczono skład granulometryczny, pH, zawartooeć węgla organicznego i próchnicy, zawartośeć makroelementów (N, P, K, Ca, Mg), metali ciężkich (Zn, Cu, Cd, Pb, Ni i Cr) oraz aktywność radionuklidów w odpadach i glebach. Badane gleby należały do gleb lekkich o odczynie kwaśnym, średnio zasobnych w makroelementy.
The aim of this study was to determine the influence of dusting of waste products from steel foundry dump on metals and radionuclides contaminations in local soils. The work presents results of research of two waste products from steel foundry dump of "Małapanew" Co. steel foundry plant and soils situated in different distance from those storage yards. Waste and soils samples was collected in July 2004. In samples granulometric composition, pH, organic carbon and humus content, macronutrients (N, P, K, Ca, Mg), heavy metals (Zn, Cu, Cd, Pb, Ni i Cr) concentrations and radionuclides activity in wastes and soils were analysed. Light, acidic soils were inter-rich in macronutrients. Wastes mainly were consist of sand. Humus and macronutrients (NPK) content was relatively low than in soils, but Mg and Ca content was higher. Analysed soils were not contaminated with heavy metals and radionuclides (except respectively Cd i 137Cs). The heavy metals concentration, except Ni and Cr, and radionuclides activities, except 137Cs i 40K, was on the same level in wastes and soils. The influence of waste products in storage yards on metal and radionuclides contaminations in neighbouring soils was not researched.

Opis:
Tests have been conducted to determine the effect of liming and magnesium treatment on the content of magnesium, calcium and iron in broad bean plants growing on soil polluted with such heavy metals as cadmium, lead, nickel, copper and zinc. In 2005, an experiment was conducted in the village Zagaje Stradowskie (Świętokrzyskie Province) on degraded Chernozem formed from loess, acid in reaction and containing 1.13% of organic carbon. Analyses were performed on aerial parts of cv. White Windsor broad bean (Vicia faba L. ssp. maior), cultivated in three series: on limed soil, on soil receiving magnesium fertilizers; on unlimed soil without magnesium fertilization. In each series, the plants were cultivated on the following objects: unpolluted soil with a natural content of heavy metals (control); unpolluted soil with a natural content of heavy metals and mineral fertilization (control+NPK); soil polluted with a cadmium dose 4 mg·kg-1 d.m.; soil polluted with a dose of 530 mg·kg-1 of lead; soil contaminated with a copper dose 85 mg·kg-1 d.m., soil contaminated with a dose of 1000 mg·kg-1 of zinc and soil polluted with a nickel dose 110 mg·kg-1 d.m. Liming was based on the analysis of hydrolytic acidity of soils from individual objects. The administered dose was established according to 1Hh. Magnesium treatments were identical in all objects. i.e. 20.4 mg·kg-1 soil d.m. Soil contamination with zinc or nickel leads to a considerable decrease in magnesium and calcium level in broad bean aerial parts but rises iron level. Liming rather than magnesium fertilization applied to soil polluted with heavy metals, such as zinc or nickel, contributes to balancing the content of the analyzed macronutrients in broad beans. The content of Ca, Fe and Mg in plants after liming approached the level determined in the control plants.
Celem badań było określenie wpływu wapnowania i nawożenia magnezowego na zawartość mangezu, wapnia i żelaza w roślinach bobu rosnących w warunkach gleby zanieczyszczonej pojedynczymi metalami ciężkimi: kadmem, ołowiem, niklem, miedzią i cynkiem. Gleba użyta w doświadczeniu to czarnoziem zdegradowany wytworzony z lessu o odczynie kwaśnym i zawartości węgla organicznego 1,13%. Doświadczenie przeprowadzono w 2005 r., w miejscowości Zagaje Stradowskie (woj. świętokrzyskie). Analizie poddano części nadziemne bobu (Vicia faba L. ssp. maior) odm. Windsor Biały uprawianego w trzech seriach: na glebie wapnowanej; poddanej nawożeniu magnezowemu; niewapnowanej i nienawożonej magnezem. W każdej serii rośliny uprawiano w następujących obiektach: gleba niezanieczyszczona — o naturalnej zawartości metali ciężkich (kontrola); gleba niezanieczyszczona — o naturalnej zawartości metali ciężkich nawożona mineralnie (kontrola + NPK); gleba zanieczyszczona kadmem w dawce 4 mg·kg-1 s.m.; gleba zanieczyszczona ołowiem w dawce 530 mg·kg-1 s.m.; gleba zanieczyszczona miedzią w dawce 85 mg·kg-1 s.m.; gleba zanieczyszczona cynkiem w dawce 1000 mg·kg-1 s.m.; gleba zanieczyszczona niklem w dawce 110 mg·kg-1 s.m. Skażenie gleby cynkiem lub niklem prowadzi do znacznego obniżenia poziomu magnezu i wapnia w częściach nadziemnych bobu, a podwyższa poziom żelaza.

The goal of the research was to evaluate the heavy metal detection and potential ecological risks in lake’s water. Geological formations consisting essentially of sandstone and quaternary marine or dune sands characterize the study area. With a climate of the Mediterranean type winters are mild and humid, whereas summers hot and dry. At the analysis center of the Faculty of Sciences, the monitoring of ETMs is carried out by ICP-MS, the processing of data and the validation of the analysis method have been drafted according to the NF T 90-120 standard applicable to the analysis in a laboratory. The analysis covers concentrations of heavy metals, which include Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, Pb and As, in the water. Pollution load index (PLI) values were above one (>1) which indicates progressive deterioration of the water quality. However, contamination factor (CF) values of Pb and Cu, ranging from 8.31 to 15.68 and from 5.5 to 28.05 respectively, show that the studied water remains under a strong impact by Pb and Cu. Considering the severity of the ecological risk (Er) for a single metal, the descending order of contaminants is Cu > Pb > Mn > Fe > Zn. In relation to the total ecological risk index (RI), water from the lake shows low to considerable ecological risk.

Influence of some selected heavy metals applied into soil as water salt solutions (2 mg Cd, 30 mg Cu, 15 mg Ni, 80 mg Pb and 70 mg Zn/kg soil d.m.) on the growth and development of broad beans and on occurrence of harmful and beneficial insects on the plant was investigated in field conditions. The applied doses of soil contamination with heavy metals strongly affected broad beans development. Plants were characterised by a significantly lower number and length of shoots and a lesser number of pods per plant as compared to the control. Chemical analysis of individual parts of plant revealed big differences in heavy metal contents in roots of plants in contaminated soil as compared to control soil with natural contents of metal ions. In the above ground parts, i.e. leaves and shoots the differences were considerably smaller. Numbers of beetroot aphids were determined on the selected plants since its appearance to the end of its development. Simultaneously, occupation of aphid colony by predators: ladybirds, Syrphidae and Chrysophidae larvae was also assessed. The number of plants occupied by aphids at each plot was also estimated. Aphids on plants in soil with increased metal contents formed more numerous colonies, also the insects invaded a bigger number of plants. Ladybird larvae, predators for aphids, occurred in more numerous colonies on plants in contaminated soil. The numbers of other aphid predators: Syrphidae and Chrysophidae larvae did not reveal statistically significant differences.

Opis:
Most of the processes occurring in soil are catalysed by enzymes. As a result of their sensitivity towards heavy metals, enzymes in contaminated soils are usually less active. The purpose of this paper was to assess the influence of bioavailable forms of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn on the activity of dehydrogenases, urease, acid and alkaline phosphatase, and to compare the results obtained from naturally and artificially contaminated soils. A pot experiment was carried out on two loamy sand soils, naturally and artificially contaminated with Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn. The total content of heavy metals classified these soils as very heavily contaminated with Cu, heavily contaminated with Pb and contaminated with Cd and Zn, all according to the IUNG system (1995). One of the following organic materials: swine manure or triticale straw, was added to the soil batches. The experiment was carried out in three replications, in two pH ranges: slightly acid and acid. Soil samples for analyses were taken after 14, 28, 165 and 450 days of incubation. The results of the experiment showed that the activity of soil enzymes depended on the content of bioavailable heavy metals; the total concentration of trace elements and H+ were less important. However, considerable differences were found in enzyme activity between naturally and artificially contaminated soils. This indicates that results obtained from other research conducted on freshly contaminated soils cannot be easily transferred to field conditions. The analysed enzymes responded differently to the concentration of bioavailable forms of heavy metals. Alkaline phosphatase was the least tolerant to bioavailable forms of heavy metals, unlike urease, which was the most tolerant soil enzyme. A similar pattern of sensitivity toward trace elements, which could be ordered as Zn > Cd > Cu > Pb, was noticed for dehydrogenases, acid and alkaline phosphatases. Urease was found to be more tolerant to Zn.

The study was conducted on three specially prepared test areas along main streets of Bialystok. The experimental plots were sown with two lawn grass mixtures: Eko and Roadside, and three doses of sewage sludge 0.0 (control), 7.5 kg/m2 and 15.0 kg/m2 were used. The calculated bioconcentration factor made possible to determine the mobility of the various metals from the soil solution to the aerial parts of plants. The obtained results showed that the plants absorbed Cd, Zn, Cu easier than Pb and Ni suggesting a high mobility, in particular of Cd, Zn, Cu, and reflects the easiness extraction of those metals by plants. Significant correlations between concentrations of metals in soil and grass were observed, nickel in soil was significantly correlated with Cd, Zn and Cu in plants, while the Zn content in soil with the level of Cu in plants.

The main reason responsible for the presence of contaminations such as heavy metals in plant products is increasing environmental pollution. As a consequence of contamination, the elements penetrate the plant and animal world as well as food and drugs. The presence of heavy metals was traced in all the investigated herbal preparations, the highest levels being found in tea bags, slightly lower – in granulated teas and gels for difficult teething. The passage of the metals to tea bags varied from 1% to 35%. Many of the investigated preparations cannot be recognized as safe as regards the levels of heavy metals, especially in relation to young children.

Floristic composition in three industrial areas with soils contaminated by heavy metals (As, Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb, Zn) and organic pollutants (polychlorinated biphenyls) was studied. The content of Pb was only significantly correlated with the floristic composition and explained 13.8% of its variability considering spatial dependency of the sites. No correlation was found for PCBs. Altogether, 237 plant vascular species were found at three study sites (117, 133 and 105, respectively). The three study areas differed in their species composition represented by their own characteristic species. The gradient in the content of natives/non-natives, species number, prevailing life forms and indicator values for plant species investigated was revealed. Based on our results, for phytoremediation purposes we can select productive plant species with high biomass and ability to accumulate large amounts of heavy metals or organic compounds and surviving on soils with low mineral content.

Thirty two active stream sediment samples were collected, panned and sieved from a 16km (500m spacing) section along Ndongo River, Buea. Sixteen of them were subjected to magnetic separation for the determination of heavy minerals under a microscope (KARL ZEISS IENA) and analyzed by XRF and AAS for As, Be, Cd, Co, Cu, Cr, Mo, Ni, Pb, Rb, Sb, Sc, Sn, Sr V, Zn, and Zr. The average element concentrations are 0.014, 64.45, 76.93, 94.52, 87.65, 147.79, 0.00, 77.00, 98.99, 40.37, 7.99, 24.70, 52.42, 1053.37, 285.46, 579.70 and 404.41ppm respectively. As (0.014 ppm) and Mo (0.001 ppm) are below l average concentrations in basalts while dispersed Be, Cd, Co, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, Sb, Sc, Sn, V, Zn values are mostly above tolerance limit in settlement areas and farmlands. Olivine with angular grains (1.5mm) and sub-hedral shape representing 10 vol. % is light green colored. Together with pyroxene (elongated, black colored with angular grains up to 0.7mm) are the most abundant minerals. Minor rutile with shiny luster is also present. R-mode factor analysis reveals Ni-Rb-V, Co–Cr–Pb–Zn, and Cu–Sr-Zr associations representing three geochemical entities related to agricultural (fertilizers) and settlement (domestic waste) areas. Correlation coefficients (r) vary from -0.84 (V, Sb) to 0.728 (Ni, Rb) and may indicate different sources of metal contamination. The calculated PLI (3.10 to 4.92) and Igeo (-7.37 to 9.18) of As, Be, Cd, Co, Cu, Cr, Mo, Ni, Pb, Rb, Sb, indicate metal pollution of River Ndongo sediments. The obtained classification is defined as low (As, Co, Cu, Cr, Mo, Ni, Sc, and V), partially (Co, Zn), moderately (Pb, Be) and highly to very highly (Sb, Sr, Cd) polluted. Natural and anthropogenic metal input assessment reveals that the dominantly basaltic lithologies in the area (pyroxene and olivine), the domestic and agricultural activities as well as urbanization processes of Buea are the main source of metal contamination.

Opis:
The research on soil and consumption yield quality at the impact zone of the petrochemical plant in Płock (ZRiP), conducted in the 1970s and 80s, proved that the emissions from the plant threatened the agricultural production within the area. As the emission levels from the ZRiP have signifi cantly dropped in recent years, analyses were conducted in order to assess the current content of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in soils as well as in wheat grain and potato tuber cultivated within the area. The results showed that the soils were not contaminated with above mentioned heavy metals, but the level of cadmium was exceeded in potato tubers collected from three research points and in wheat grain collected from one point.
W przypadku zawartości analizowanych pierwiastków metalicznych w plonie konsumpcyjnym stwierdzono nadmierną ilość cynku w bulwach ziemniaków (we wszystkich próbach) i ziarnie pszenicy (w jednej próbce).

Opis:
Background. Natural spices are commonly used by the people in Nigeria. They may be easily contaminated with heavy metals when they are dried and then pose a health risk for the consumers. Objective. The aim of this study was to determine the levels of heavy metals in some commonly consumed natural spices namely Prosopis Africana, Xylopia aethiopica, Piper gineense, Monodora myristica, Monodora tenuifolia and Capsicum frutescens sold in the local markets of Awka, Anambra state, South East Nigeria to estimate the potential health risk. Results. The range of heavy metal concentration was in the order: Zn (14.09 – 161.04) > Fe (28.15 – 134.59) > Pb (2.61 – 8.97) > Cr (0.001 – 3.81) > Co (0.28 – 3.07) > Ni (0.34 – 2.89). Pb, Fe and Zn exceeded the maximum allowable concentrations for spices. The Target Hazard Quotient (THQ) of the spices varied from 0.06 – 0.5. Estimated daily intakes (EDI) were all below the tolerable daily intake (TDI). The lead levels in Prosopis africana, Xylopia aethiopica, Piper gineense, Monodora myristica and Capsicum frutescens which are 8-30 times higher than the WHO/FAO permissible limit of 0.3 mg/kg. Conclusions. Lead contamination of spices sold in Awka (south east Nigeria) may add to the body burden of lead. A good quality control for herbal food is important in order to protect consumers from contamination.
