Introduction. The effects of the use of mobile henhouses and their equipment on the physical and mental stress of farmers in the organic egg production, and the reliability of the sensor-based detection of these in work processes are insufficiently known. There are neither measurement results nor key figures, according to operation and gender especially, available in the literature. Objective. The aim of this case study is to quantify the physical and mental stress of work processes on the basis of heart rate and the Baevsky Stress Index, as measured by the ECG- and activity sensor Movisens®, which is used mainly in the sports and rehabilitation sectors. To analyse the impact, daily routine work was divided into operations and the data collected for this purpose analysed descriptively and analytically. Conclusions. In summary, it can be concluded that measurement technology has the potential to capture the activityrelated exceedances of the endurance limit of the work severity by means of the heart rate reliably, to identify risk areas of employment and to quantify stress situations. The accuracy and reliability of data acquisition with Movisens® should be validated by a larger sample size and further measurements. In particular, the algorithm for calculating the data to quantify the mental and physical stress without movement needs to be improved significantly through further development.

Heart rate is the index of a reaction of the circulatory system to effort (mainly physical), which is the easiest to measure and record. From among methods of heart rate measurement and record, cordless meters are commonly applied nowadays. One of the advantages of these meters - for example POLAR - that they are easy to use. The meter consists of two elements: chest band and wrist recorder, which do not interfere with work. The recorded results are transferred by interface to a computer, where they could be presented in the form of time charts, and analyzed statistically. The programming of the recorder and various options of the statistic analysis of heart rate enable researchers to evaluate physical effort during work. That method has been used for a few years in ergonomic research led by the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering at the Agricultural University of Krakow.

The aim of the research was to identify the pattern of psycho - physiological response to emotional stimulation in adults with chronic stuttering. The need to tell a lie functioned as emotional stimulation. Reaction to the stimulus was defined as the change of electrodermal activity (EDA), heart rate (HR), thoracic breathing (TB), diaphragmatic breathing (DB) and respiratory rate (RR) observed 10 seconds before and after the emotional stimulation. Reactions were recorded using Professional Computer Polygraph PIK-02 manufactured by Areopag-Center. The subject group included 68 persons with chronic stuttering (PWS) (24 women and 44 men) as well as 62 healthy nonstuttering persons (PWNS) (18 women and 44 men). Adult patients with chronic stuttering were observed to increase the amplitude and reaction field as well as reduce the EDA latency. The researchers also noticed both increased HR and the range of its changes. Respiratory reactions included a lower amplitude of TB, higher increase and major changes within DB as well as minor changes in RR. Adult patients with chronic stuttering display a unique pattern of psychophysiological response to emotional stimulation, which is different from the one found in the control group.

The Conconi Test (CT) is an incremental exercise test characterized by stages of equal intensity. For analysis speed (S) and HR (heart rate) are used. The deflection point of the HR/S graph marks the point where the linear relation between S and HR changes to a curvilinear one. As Conconi stated HR at deflection point represents anaerobic threshold (AT) value. Purpose of this study was to extend our previous research dealing with reliability and validity aspects of CT. Material and Methods: During 10 years (2007-2017) we tested 2 500 subjects using Conconi protocol. Tested were mainly football players and smaller number of runners (long distance and cross country) different ages and fitness level. Some subjects were tested repeatedly during the years. Initial speed of the running treadmill test was determined in the range of 10 to 12 km·h-1, according subjects age and fitness level. Speed was increased gradually every 150 m of 0.5 km·h-1 to the maximum speed when further increases were impossible. HR was recorded at every 150 meters. From a graphical representation dependence HR on increasing running speed we tried to find apparent diversion from the curve of linearity, labeled by Conconi as "deflection point" (DP). Simultaneously respiration values were recorded. From these respiration data we determined the ventilatory threshold (VT2) as a metabolic marker of the onset of blood lactate accumulation. Results: We found 6 types of response HR to increasing speed. a) regular DP; b) linear regression r ≥ 0.98 - no DP; c) linear regression r < 0.98 - no DP; d) inversion character of deflection point; e) DP not corresponding with value of ANP; f) more than one DP. As an AT predictor compared with VT2, Conconi test overestimated this value (0.5 km·h-1). Conclusion: Using of Conconi test as a predictor of ANP has a limitation. ANP values determined by CT are overestimated (0.5 km·h-1). Test stability of CT is very low and there is evidence that DP is not 100% repeated physiology phenomena.

Nowadays there is a tendency of deterioration in young people health. Despite sharp rise in disease level of students there are no changes in current program of physical education for students of higher educational institution; it is significant problem of physical culture and sport field. It is also worth noting there is no special educational program for students who are referred to physical rehabilitation groups because of their health condition. So in the face of the deterioration of students' health condition there appears a need to search the effective methods of physical education which can facilitate the solving of an actual problem. The objective of research is determination of the effectiveness of Callanetics experimentally during educational process of students of the II-III level of scoliosis. For achieving this goal there were used the following methods of research: theoretical analysis and synthesis; testing of functional indicators of cardiovascular system (heart rate and blood pressure - systolic, diastolic and pulse); statistical data processing. The analysis of results gives evidence about effectiveness of physical educational experimental program using callanetics for physical rehabilitation groups with students of the II-III level of scoliosis. It is proved that this program has had a significant impact on the functional indicators of the cardiovascular system, it is also defined as the criterion of fitness level and adaptation abilities of an organism. The results can be used in further practice of physical education classes with groups of physical rehabilitation faculty.

Several studies claim that the physical effort of students during Physical Education classes (PE) is low. There is a lack of desire to change or improve physical fitness levels. Purpose: In this study, we intend to analyse the average values of heart rate (HR) during different phases of the PE class, trying to identify possible differences between collective and individual sports (basketball and apparatus gymnastics). The sample consisted of a group of 15 students, 5 female and 10 male (15.2± 12:56 years) and the study was conducted over 10 sessions (5 of each type), registering values of HR (bpm) using HR monitors (Polar Electronic, FT1 model). Results: After exploratory data analysis there were significant differences in the transition phase (basketball: 146 ± 27.2 bpm, p = 0.001; apparatus gymnastics: 138.4 ± 25.8 bpm, p = 0.001) and the drilling stage (basketball: 151.2 ± 26.1 bpm, p = 0.000; gymnastics apparatus: 143.0 ± 27.0 bpm, p = 0.000). In the process of organizing, the differences were not significant (basketball: 136.8 ± 26.2 bpm, p = 0526; apparatus gymnastics: 132.3 ± 23.9 bpm, p = 0526). Conclusions: Having these results, we believe that PE teachers should plan sessions that provide increased uptime and higher levels of intensity for students, especially in periods of drilling, regardless of the class.

Opis:
Introduction and Objectives. Holding determined body postures during work is connected with muscles activity. The more forced the posture, the larger the number of muscles taking an active part in holding and stabilizing the work posture. During logging, the greatest share of awkward (forced) working postures occurs in tree felling by chainsaw. Materials and Method. A group of 10 experienced fellers aged 47.5±7.3 (37 – 59-years-old) was studied. Heart rate (HR) was measured during simulation of felling activity in 4 working postures: back bent forward with straight legs (stoop), back bent forward with bent legs (flexed-stoop), squat and kneeling on one knee (half-kneel). Results. The lowest value of HR was noticed for squatting – 114.1 bpm, then for kneeling on one knee – 116.3 bpm. HR during felling in a standing posture with straight legs amounted to 121.5 bpm and for standing with bent legs 125.3 bpm. For all studied postures the differences in average HR values were statistically significant at p<0.01. Conclusions. A working posture during tree felling by chainsaw has influence on the level of physiological workload of an operator. Standing bent forward body postures cause higher heart response than squatting and half-kneeling.

ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to determine the physiological and biochemical changes among bakers, induced by heat exposure at the workplace.Material and MethodsInformation was collected by means of a self-administered questionnaire. Vital signs were measured and recorded by a trained nurse before and after each work shift. A venous blood sample was drawn at the end of each work shift. The mean wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT) index in the bakeries and offices was measured.ResultsThis was a cross-sectional study involving 137 bakers working in 20 bakeries, and 107 control subjects comparable in terms of age, race, marital status, years of service, income, and cigarette smoking. There was a significant weight loss and increase in the respiratory rate, the heart rate, and oral body temperature among the bakers compared to the control group. Sodium levels were significantly lower, while blood urea nitrogen levels were significantly higher, among the bakers than in the control group. There were unfavorably hot working conditions in the bakeries: the WBGT index in the bakeries was 37.4°C while the average WBGT for the offices was 25.5°C.ConclusionsThe changes in the physiological and biochemical parameters among the bakers were found to be associated with exposure to high environmental heat in the bakeries, as judged by the WBGT index. Preventive measures should be aimed at reducing the adverse effects of heat exposure among bakers and should be directed towards the man-machine-environment triad.

In this study perceived mental stress during occupational work was compared to heart rate variability (HRV) using a traditional questionnaire and a novel wristop heart rate monitor with related software. The aim was to find HRV parameters useful for mental stress detection. We found the highest correlation between perceived mental stress with the differences between the values of triangular interpolation of rythm-to-rythm (RR) interval histogram (TINN) and the root mean square of differences of successive RR intervals (RMSSD) obtained in the morning and during the workday (r = –.73 and r = –.60, respectively). The analysis shows that as the RMSSD and TINN value differences increase from night to morning, the stress decreases.

Objectives: The aim of the study was to verify whether simultaneous responses from the muscular and circulatory system occur in the driver's body under simulated conditions of a crash threat. Materials and Methods: The study was carried out in a passenger car driving simulator. The crash was included in the driving test scenario developed in an urban setting. In the group of 22 young male subjects, two physiological signals - ECG and EMG were continuously recorded. The length of the RR interval in the ECG signal was assessed. A HRV analysis was performed in the time and frequency domains for 1-minute record segments at rest (seated position), during undisturbed driving as well as during and several minutes after the crash. For the left and right side muscles: m. trapezius (TR) and m. flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS), the EMG signal amplitude was determined. The percentage of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) was compared during driving and during the crash. Results: As for the ECG signal, it was found that in most of the drivers changes occurred in the parameter values reflecting HRV in the time domain. Significant changes were noted in the mean length of RR intervals (mRR). As for the EMG signal, the changes in the amplitude concerned the signal recorded from the FDS muscle. The changes in ECG and EMG were simultaneous in half of the cases. Conclusion: Such parameters as mRR (ECG signal) and FDS-L amplitude (EMG signal) were the responses to accident risk. Under simulated conditions, responses from the circulatory and musculoskeletal systems are not always simultaneous. The results indicate that a more complete driver's response to a crash in road traffic is obtained based on parallel recording of two physiological signals (ECG and EMG).

Introduction and objective. Aging is a process that also affects the autonomic nervous system (ANS) making it less adaptable to environmental and intrinsic stimuli and affecting its ability to maintain body homeostasis. The aim of this study was to estimate the resting ANS function using heart rate variability (HRV) method and by noradrenaline measurement in aging, 2–12-months-old rats. Materials and method. Resting 15-minute-long ECG recordings were performed in anaesthetized rats with a subsequent spectral HRV analysis. Basic non-normalized HRV components in the range of very low (VLF), low (LF) and high (HF) frequency, along with the total HRV spectrum power (TP) were estimated. Moreover, normalized LF (nLF) and normalized HF (nHF) were calculated. Blood samples were also collected to assay plasma noradrenaline (NA) level. Results. In the overall assessment, plasma noradrenaline level as well as both TP and all non-normalized HRV components demonstrated a tendency for reduction when compared the first (2nd) and last (12th) months. In the case of nLF and nHF, a trend of nLF predominance in the 2nd and 3rd month was revealed while an inverse relation was observed from the 6th month on, with nHF superiority. Overall, males reached comparable or slightly higher NA and non-normalized HRV values compared to females, although most differences were not statistically significant. A parallel decline of LF (starting from the 10th month) and HF (from the 6th month) was demonstrated in both male and female animals. Female rats had a little more stable nLF and nHF course in the study time. Conclusions. Rat ANS aging is associated with global HRV decrease with parallel plasma NA decline, although without selective impairment of individual (sympathetic/parasympathetic) ANS components.

Opis:
To-date, the impact of modern milking parlors in dairy farming on physical strain has not been the subject of many studies. Therefore, this case study aims to record and evaluate the physical strain during the entire milking process, including the oxygen consumption (VO2), heart rate (HR) and metabolic rate (WkJ, Watt) of milkers. The recording was conducted with a portable respiratory gas analysis system and an ECG and activity sensor on 4 dairy farms in Austria. Eight subjects aged from 45–52 years, with a mean age 50±2.4 SD, participated and the data were recorded during the milking process in 2 types of milking parlours. For assessment, the entire milking process was divided into preparation, milking and follow-up work. The entire milking process was performed with an average oxygen consumption of 46.5 l/h and a heart rate of 98 bpm, which is below the anaerobic threshold; whereas in the preparation and follow-up work, this threshold was exceeded. Generally, during the milking process, a moderate physical strain (32.4%) and a balanced metabolic rate (143 watt/m2) were determined. The physical strain in female milkers was 9.2% higher than in male milkers throughout the entire process. Reduction of physical strain can be achieved through additional breaks, reduced work speed, division of labour and technical devices.

The heart rate of a person is able to tell whether they are healthy. A heart-rate monitoring device is able to measure or record the heart rate of a person in real time, whether it is an electrocardiogram (ECG) or a photoplethysmogram (PPG). In this work, a microprocessor system loaded with a heart-rate monitoring algorithm is implemented. The microprocessor system is the Nios II processor system, which interfaces with an analogue-to-digital converter (ADC) and a pulse sensor. A beat-finding algorithm is used in the microprocessor system for heart rate measurement. An experiment is carried out to analyse the functionality of the microprocessor system loaded with the algorithm. The results show that the detected heart rate is in the range of the average human being’s heart rate. The signal flow within the microprocessor system is observed and analysed using SignalTap II from Quartus’ software. Based on a power analysis report, the proposed microprocessor system has a total power dissipation of around 218.26 mW.

Heart rate at work (HRwork), resting heart rate (HRrest), relative heart rate (%HRR), ratio of working heart rate to resting heart rate, and 50% level were used to estimate the physiological workload in particular jobs. The HRindex (HRwork/HRrest) equation was used to estimate the energy expenditure (EE). ResultsFor all jobs, significantly higher physiological workload and energy expenditure were recorded during winter.ConclusionsThe season significantly affects the physiological workload during logging operations. If there is no possibility of harvesting wood in summer, in order to limit the workload of workers during winter activity, attention should be paid to the proper organization of work and selection of workers.

Opis:
The objective of this study was determine the effect of classical massage therapy on heart rate in horses working in hippotherapy. We hypothesised that massage can be used to improve the horse's welfare, because it mentally relaxes the horse. The relationship between variables were examined to determine whether the selected factors (use or non-use of massage, the method of securing the patient on the horse, way of getting on a horse, place of treatment) influenced the heart rate of two horses working in hippotherapy. The results showed significant but very different effects on heart rate of particular horses subjected to a massage. It was also shown that heart rate of horses working in hippotherapy is highly influenced by environmental factors.
Wpływ masażu klasycznego na parametry pracy serca koni pracujących w hipoterapii. Studium przypadku.

Opis:
Background: It has been evidenced that the outcome of a CVA patient differs as a function of the cerebral hemisphere that is damaged by the stroke, especially in terms of emotional changes. In contrast, the Bi-Hemispheric Model of Emotion posits that each hemisphere has its own emotional specialization. The current experiment tested the competing predictions of the two theoretical perspectives in a mixed sample of left cerebrovascular accident (LCVA) patients and right cerebrovascular accident (RCVA) patients using a Dichotic Listening task and the Affective Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AAVLT). Heart Rate (HR) and Pulse Oxygen Saturation (SpO2) were recorded as sympathetic measures. It was expected that the predictions of the Bi-Hemispheric Model would be supported. A series of mixed design ANOVAs were used to analyze the data. Material/Methods: Participants consisted of 21 patients grouped into either post-acute status left cerebrovascular accident (LCVA) or right cerebrovascular accident (RCVA). Tests included the The Dichotic Listening test, The Affective Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AAVLT), HR and Sp02 measurement using a Fingertip Pulse Oximeter and the Mood Assessment Scale for depression. Results: Results revealed that both groups exhibited decreased auditory detection abilities in the ear contralateral to CVA location. Additionally, CVA patients recalled significantly more positive words than negative or neutral words and exhibited a significant learning curve. LCVA patients exhibited a recency effect, while RCVA patients exhibited a heigh tened primacy effect. Findings from the HR and Sp02 measures suggested a parasympathetic response to emotionally neutral information as well as an impaired sympathetic response to emotionally negative information in RCVA patients. Conclusions: The results lend partial support to the hypothesis drawn from the Bi-Hemispheric Model of Emotion, as evidenced by the diametrically opposite effects in these groups, which reflects opposing cerebral processes.

This paper presents the experimental results for stress index calculation using developed by the authors information technology for non-contact remote human heart rate variability (HRV) retrieval in various conditions from video stream using common wide spread web cameras with minimal frame resolution of 640x480 pixels at average frame rate of 25 frames per second. The developed system architecture based on remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) technology is overviewed including description of all its main components and processes involved in converting video stream of frames into valuable rPPG signal. Also, algorithm of RR-peaks detection and RR-intervals retrieval is described. It is capable to detect 99.3% of heart contractions from raw rPPG signal. The usecases of measuring stress index in a wide variety of situations starting with car and tractor drivers at work research and finishing with students passing exams are presented and analyzed in detail. The results of the experiments have shown that the rPPG system is capable of retrieving stress level that is in accordance with the feelings of experiments’ participants.

Opis:
Introduction: Syncope is defined as transient loss of consciousness, due to decrease in brain perfusion. The most frequent mechanism is vasovagal syncope. In many patients, the cause of syncope remains unspecified, despite an extensive diagnostic work-up. Tilt-test (TT) is an acknowledged diagnostic tool for syncope. Currently, the so-called Italian protocol of TT is most widely used. Vasovagal syncope is caused by impaired circulatory regulation in response to orthostatic stress. One of the available tools to examine the influence of the nervous system on the circulation is the analysis of heart rate variability (HRV). Despite numerous publications concerning HRV parameters and autonomic regulation in patients with syncope, direct comparisons and metaanalysis of the results is impossible, due to variability of TT protocols and study group specifications. Aim of the study: As there is no uniform model of HRV during TT, we aimed to analyze HRV parameters during TT (performed according to the Italian protocol) in patients with vasovagal syncope, in order to determine the possible application of HRV measurements in clinical practice in that group of patients. Detailed objectives were: (1) analysis and comparison of HRV in patients with and without the history of syncope; (2) analysis of HRV changes in consecutive stages of TT; (3) identification of possible HRV differences between patients with positive and negative TT results. Materials and methods: Patients between 18 and 50 years of age were qualified for the study, if they had a history of at least 2 incidents of syncope or presyncope within the preceeding 6 months, and if signs and symptoms indicated the vasovagal mechanism. The study group included 150 patients: 100 consecutive patients with a postive TT result (POS), and 50 consecutive patients with a negative TT result (NEG). The control group (CG) comprised 50 volunteers with no history of syncope nor presyncope, matched according to age and sex to the study group. In all patients a TT was performed according to the Italian protocol, with paced breathing at a rate of 15/min. Time-domain (meanRR, SDNN, RMSSD, pNN50) and frequency-domain (abs_LF, abs_HF, rel_LF, rel_HF, norm_LF, norm_HF, LF/HF) HRV parameters were analyzed and compared at different stages of TT in the study groups as specified above. Results: 100 patients at the age of 18-44 years were included in the POS group, 50 patients at the age of 18-39 years in the NEG group, and 50 volunteers at the age of 20-39 in the CG. Volunteers in the control group developed unexpectedly high percentage of positive TT (14 patients). For consistency of analysis, the CG was thus subdivided according to the result of the TT into CG_POS (positive result of TT) – 14 patients, and CG_NEG (negative result of TT) – 36 patients. Based on HRV analaysis, no significant differences in HRV values were noted between patients with a history of syncope and positive or negative result of TT. Upright tilt resulted in HRV changes of the same direction and value in syncopal patients in the POS and NEG goup, as well as in patients in the CG_NEG group. Conclusion: HRV values and changes of those values at subsequent stages of TT were not different between syncopal patients with postive or negative TT result, or negative TT control group. The Italian protocol of TT may be associated with a surprisingly high percentage of false positive results.

Opis:
Purpose: In India, the cost of manpower is very low; hence Manual Material Handling (MMH) is the cheapest solution. This study aimed to quantify the cardiac strain and postural stress of male building construction workers associated with MMH tasks. Materials and methods: Mean (SD) age (years) and job experience (years) of the workers were 31.0(4.65) and 8.8 (3.23), respectively (n=35). Working peak heart rate was recorded by polar heart rate monitor, posture analysis was done by the Ovako Working Posture Analysis System (OWAS) and the Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) method, body part discomfort was assessed by the Nordic questionnaire, and perceived exertion was evaluated by the Borg scale. Two-tailed unpaired Student’s t test was performed between peak heart rate of workers associated with MMH tasks and upper extremity intensive tasks (n=31). Results: Results revealed that mean peak heart rate of the workers was significantly different (higher) compared with that of the upper extremity intensive workers (p<0.05). This study showed that most of the working postures were hazardous. The magnitude of risk for musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) was much higher as per REBA compared with OWAS. Most of the workers suffered from pain in the head, neck, shoulder, lower back, and arm region. As per the Borg scale, the rate of perceived exertion was ‘hard and heavy’ among most of the workers (68.57%). Conclusions: Postural stress and cardiac strain beyond the safe limit indicates the heavy nature of the job. Load limit optimization, ergonomic lifting technique, and rescheduled work-rest cycle are essential to reducing physiological and perceived work load.

Cardiac monitoring in the environment of the subject is one of the major fields of telemedicine. In this paper we present a prototype of embedded system for acquisition, storage, display on LCD or PC and transfer via GSM alarm warning in case of arrhythmias, which allows a great opportunity for rapid intervention of the physician. In terms of hardware, we have designed and implemented our system with a modular approach to facilitate development and debugging. Thus the system comprises three modules: analog module, digital module microcontroller-based for certain pretreatment, and a GSM communication module. Of course, there is appropriate software behind the material described. The system has the following features: low cost, ease to implement and versatility.

The purpose of this study was to present a time motion differences between Romanian and Polish young soccer players during 6 vs 6 small sided games. Young male football players from Schools of Sports Masters in Oradea (Romania) and Łódź (Poland) participated in the study. During the training session the players participated in four small-sided games 6 vs. 6 with goalkeepers (4 × 4 min, 3 min of active recovery). Heart rate responses and distance covered during small-sided games were compared. There were significant differences in the distance covered by both nationality players and age groups in reference to each intensity zone. Polish players coverd significantly longer distance compared with romanian soccer players. The results of motion abilities of young players from two countries with different training systems show that training programs can have a significant effect on adoptive abilities of the players.
