Various types of plasters representing various ages used for the restoration of walls and sculptures at the chapel of Amun, Temple of the Hatshepsut were examined using mineralogical techniques. Samples represent at small destroyed fragments of the plasters removed during the conservation of the chapel. The investigation showed various mineral compositions of the plasters and the evolution of the method of preparation of the plasters used for restoration of the walls of the monument. Plasters were prepared with the use of gypsum as the binding material

The project “Mammals in the iconography of the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut”, initiated by the author in the 2011/2012 season, encompasses a detailed documentation of the animals depicted in various parts of Hatshepsut’s temple in Deir el-Bahari as a prerequisite for in-depth research. The study follows a multi-disciplinary approach within faunal analysis, and is complemented with technological observations on the execution of relief representations from the temple. At this stage of the project, a general taxonomic identification of the animal representations is nearly complete and a further detailed study of each taxon has been undertaken. Both complete animals (mainly mammals for now) and animal raw materials were studied in addition to the contexts and scenes in which they appear.

A peculiar drawing of a part of the decoration of the Royal Mortuary Cult Complex in the Hatshepsut temple at Deir el-Bahari, as copied once by Johannes Dümichen, is the subject of this paper. Its comparison with existing relief fragments leads to the conclusion that the plate in question is the result of an artificial juxtaposition of two disparate fragments of wall decoration from the Royal Mortuary Cult Complex.

Opis:
The Temple of Hatshepsut was in use, and frequently modified, between the 16th century BC and the 12th century AD. From the beginning of the archaeological work at the site in the 19th century, one of the primary research goals has been to understand the modifications made to the building since its initial construction. The present paper provides an overview of the different arguments and ideas proposed for the original configuration of the Upper Courtyard, confronted with evidence from recent excavations between 2014 and 2016 in different parts of the court. In 2000, architect Andrzej Kwaśnica argued for an unprecedented arrangement of the architectural elements of the Upper Courtyard. However, recent archaeological discoveries suggest that the issue should be revisited. The examination of the foundations of the Ptolemaic Portico columns has shown that the six bases may have been in situ since the reign of Hatshepsut.

Opis:
The article presents a probable way of transporting false doors to their location within the Temple of Hatshepsut during its construction. The issue does not seem to be of particular significance until one considers the value of the false doors as such and the impossibility of using heavy equipment in the chapels of the Complex of the Royal Mortuary Cult. The false doors had to be introduced into the construction site at the time that the walls of the chapel were being raised but before the building of the vaults. The options discussed in the article illustrate the logistical problems of the undertaking and the construction opportunities that might have been taken advantage of. The discussion provides a closer look at the construction processes taking place in the Temple of Hatshepsut during the separate stages of expansion and the changes in its functional and spatial design. In consequence, it reopens the debate on the building chronology of the temple.

Opis:
Known from a few representations in Predynastic Egyptian art, the secretarybird has otherwise been elusive, in the art of Pharaonic Egypt as well as the scientific discourse on iconographic imagery of birds in ancient Egypt. The author's studies of the animal decoration at the Temple for her doctoral dissertation identified three images of birds belonging most likely to the same species, depicted in the context of the expedition of Hatshepsut shown in the Portico of Punt. The zoological identification of the species as the secretarybird (another possibility is the African harrier-hawk) derives from an in-depth analysis of the bird’s systematics, appearance, distribution and habitat, as well as behavior, which are essential for proper species recognition and instrumental for understanding the rationale behind bringing it from the “God’s Land”. Iconographic features contesting this identification and suggesting a different species, that is, the African harrier-hawk, are discussed based on a combination of theoretical background, material analysis, on-site interviews with experts and the author’s personal experience with the species.

Opis:
The coronation cycle in the Portico of the Birth in the temple of Deir el-Bahari includes a scene of purification of Hatshepsut by a god captioned as Ha in Sheta. This seemingly hapax toponym provides the key to a proper understanding of the highly symbolic meaning of the scene. The place name, composed of basic cosmographical hieroglyphs, has at the same time a spelling that refers to a vast semantic field of the notions of “mystery”, “secret”, “be hidden”, etc. It appears that the purification made by a god of the western desert in a “mysterious” place refers to the initiation of the female pharaoh into the secrets of the sun god, enabling her to fulfill her role as the provider of sustenance for humanity. The role of the god Ha as a protector against hunger, rooted in the Old Kingdom tradition and expressed also in the text of BD 178 in the Offering Chapel of Hatshepsut, is crucial in this respect.

Examination of the set of preserved gate lintels from the Temple of Hatshepsut in Deir el-Bahari has revealed two models of the iconographic decoration: one that emphasizes pictorial content in the form of scenes of a cultic or symbolic nature, with inscriptions playing merely a complementary role, and the other based on the textual message alone. The use of a given model of lintel decoration appears to be a measure either of the function of the room or, more broadly, of the space, accessed through the gate, or of the context of the wall decoration around the entrance.

Conservation work on the walls of this room uncovered the painted layer. One of the stands preserves traces of an inscription which was erased in ancient times in two phases. The first phase of erasure may be dated to the reign of Tuthmosis III, while the second one was executed during the Amarna period. The reconstruction of the iconographic program of the decoration of the sandstone bases of a group of sphinxes of Hatshepsut lining the processional avenue leading to the Queen’s Mansion of a Million Years in the temple at Deir el-Bahari is the prime focus of this article. The fragments of these statues discovered in the 1920s by the archaeological mission of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York were never published. The pieces were rediscovered in storage in 2005. A theoretical reconstruction has been undertaken, leading the author to identify an unusual iconographical pattern that reflects changes in art introduced in the times of Hatshepsut. The representations on the bases of the royal sandstone sphinxes from the queen’s temple include, among others, rekhyt birds, pat-people and “enemies of Egypt”. They take on a form that departs from that known from other sphinx sculptures.

In a recent article Andrzej Ćwiek (2015) criticized on ideological grounds one of the hypotheses concerning the reconstruction of the Solar Altar in the Complex of the Sun Cult of the Temple of Hatshepsut in Deir el-Bahari. The theoretical reconstruction in question, presented as one of the possibilities in an earlier text by the present author (Dziedzic 2013), called for two obelisks and a sacrificial table standing on the Solar Altar located in the open courtyard of the complex. Ćwiek also pointed to the practical difficulties associated with transportation and placement of stone obelisks. This article describes the technical aspects of transporting and placing obelisks in two different locations. It also contains calculations concerning the weight impact of the altar elements (obelisks) on the altar structure.

A set of wooden figures representing female deities with painted fronts and flat backs was identified in the archaeological material coming from recent excavations in the Chapel of Hatshepsut. The fragments were scattered through the shafts of Third Intermediate Period date. Most probably they had once formed a single piece of funerary equipment from one of the burials. Remains of nine figures were distinguished. These were divided into two groups by size. The smallscale figures had outstretched arms, while the big-scale ones were shown with one arm raised and the other lowered alongside the body. They are presumed to have been attached to a flat wooden background. Both iconographical types are attested in the decoration of mortuary equipment from the New Kingdom on, though no object decorated with the same set of goddesses has been found so far.

The article is about damages to the architecture and wall decoration of niches in the Vestibule of Hatshepsut in the Royal Mortuary Cult Complex. Traces of ancient repairs may be discerned in the distorted layers of limestone blocks and deformed relief. The nature of this restoration indicates that it took place once the sculpting of the reliefs had been completed but before the painting. The reasons for this can be related to the short building time of the temple.

Opis:
In a recent article Teresa Dziedzic presented a theoretical reconstruction of the solar altar in the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari, with two obelisks standing on the top of it. From both a technological/logistic and an ideological point of view this hypothesis seems untenable. An alternative reconstruction may be offered in agreement with the archaeological evidence and the ideological program of the temple. Statues of the king and of Amun-Ra placed on the altar served as focal points of an early version of the ritual of ‘joining the sun-disk’.

The restoration works during the whm mswt era under Senwosret I, undertaken on a large scale in the whole country, were the example to follow for Hatshepsut and Thutmose III. The reconstruction of monumental structures in both historical moments was performed, above all, in the case of the sacral architecture. This article deals with the vocabulary used by these kings to describe the destruction of the world and the recreation of the new order of the sacred landscape. By studying the vocabulary it was possible to realise the range of works initiated by Hatshepsut and continued by Thutmose III in almost all cult centres of Egypt.

Building a temple in Ancient Egypt began with the Foundation Ritual and ended with the consecration of the completed monument to its gods. The moment when the temple was ready for its cultic functions is by a majority of authors placed at the end of the process. The importance and complexity of the Foundation Ritual shows that directly after its completing the Egyptians might have treated extent of the future temple as a sacred space which already during the construction of the temple required some sort of cult. There seems to be no royal document referring to the official worship, but a number of ostraca from Deir el-Bahari and another longer document may be linked to this early stage unmaterialized existence of the temple. All these documents record the offerings presented in the temple by different officials of the time of Hatshepsut. At least some of them predate the completion of building operation.

The subject of the present paper are two hitherto unpublished hieratic dipinti from the Birth Portico of the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari. One of them had been written on the north wall of the portico and can be related precisely to the second phase of restoration undertaken in the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut in the post-Amarna period, and more specifically to the reign of Ramesses II. The other inscription, written on the south wall of the portico, can be ascribed to a certain Minnakht and his colleague Ired, presumably builders of the temple. In addition, a comment on other dipinti on the walls of the portico and its pillars has been included.

The longest, west wall of the South Lower Portico (Portico of Obelisks) of the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari has been reassessed in terms of its current state, compared to the original documentation by Edouard Naville, as an opening step to the author’s research project organized within the frame of the larger University of Warsaw Temple of Hatshepsut research program. A considerable number of blocks from the wall, including unpublished fragments, was tracked down in storage in the various temple blockyards and storerooms. About two-thirds of the wall decoration underwent conservation treatment in the spring of 2018 and 2019 seasons. The paper discusses the author’s progress in this research.

Opis:
The Main Sanctuary of Amun-Ra in the Temple of Hatshepsut in Deir el-Bahari has been studied repeatedly, but never comprehensively (Naville 1906; Winlock 1932; Wysocki 1985). In preparation for a full architectural study of this complex, which is one of the oldest parts of the Eighteenth Dynasty mortuary temple, the paper presents a general specification of the preserved architecture, contextualized in a brief account of the discovery of the sanctuary and the history of its restoration and conservation, tied by necessity with the bigger works conducted by Polish specialists in the temple itself. The sanctuary in its present state is the combined effect of a number of phases of development, the most recent being a rebuilding in the Ptolemaic period. The inventory drawings of the current state of the complex, made by the author, an architect, leave the reader with a good idea of the form of the sanctuary, opening the way to a comprehensive architectural study, which will trace the original plan through all the subsequent phases of development and modern conservation and restoration work.

During documentation of the offering scenes decorating the Chapel of Hatshepsut (the so-called Southern Hall of Offerings) in the mortuary temple of the queen at Deir el-Bahari, on some vessels represented among piled offerings on the upper part of its north wall, deep gouges typical for the iconoclasm of the Amarna period have been observed. Closer examination revealed similar traces of deliberate destruction also on depictions of other pottery forms, recorded on blocks attributed to the scene in question in its eastern section. It is interesting to remark that the described erasures have been noted (with only one exception) exclusively on the north wall of the Chapel, while all the vessels depicted in the corresponding area of the south wall bear no such traces. The aim of the paper is an attempt at reconstructing inscriptions placed on the vessels in question on the basis of similar representations coming from the other parts of Djeser-djeseru, the actual inscribed vessels known from the archaeological context and th depictions of similar artifacts found in some Eighteenth Dynasty tombs of the nobles.

Reusage was a common phenomenon in the ancient world. Throughout the history of Egypt, from the very early beginnings until modern times, tombs, temples, quarries or loose architectural elements were adapted for new purposes. The Temple of Hatshepsut in Deir el-Bahari (Upper Egypt) was no exception. Our knowledge about the Graeco-Roman to Late Antique periods comes mainly from the movable artefacts such as ostraka, papyri and secondary epigraphy preserved on the walls. In 2018, an attempt was made to recapture the faint, but still noticeable, drawings and texts left there by monks and Christian visitors. Contrary to previous studies, a more contextual approach was applied in the course of this re-examination.

Both fragments had been cut from the walls of the temple, most likely in the late 19th century, before arriving in Swansea via the Wellcome collection in 1971. One fragment contains two columns of text (W351b) while the second depicts the head of a figure (W1376). This paper examines these two fragments, identifying the head of the figure as Hatshepsut’s daughter, the God’s Wife of Amun Neferure.

The decoration of the Vestibule of the Chapel of Hatshepsut in the queen’s temple in Deir el-Bahari resembles the decoration of the square antechamber known from the pyramid temples of the Old and Middle Kingdoms. However, the original decorative program of the vestibule, especially with regard to the processions of divinities, is obscured by changes and damage attributable to different periods. Two new blocks, proposed for the west wall of the vestibule, contribute new information on the relief decoration from the time of Hatshepsut. Egyptological studies of the decoration of the vestibule have also enabled a revision of the suggested architrave arrangement in this chamber.

The article deals with the position of Senwosret I in the royal ideology of Hatshepsut and Thutmose III. Innovations introduced by this king to the architecture, as well as new motifs of decoration that appeared for the first time during the reign of Senwosret I, were not copied by other rulers for a long time. The Thutmoside co-regents were the first to reproduce or to exploit them purposely in their own constructions. The particular role of Senwosret I was also attested in the cult of this royal ancestor performed during the reign of Hatshepsut and Thutmose III, both on the official and private level. The study shows that Hatshepsut and Thutmose III emphasised those elements of Senwosret I activity which had a direct connection with the concept of kingship and its renewal, and referred to the time of renewal of the sacred landscape of Egypt and the regeneration of the sacred kingship, namely the whm mswt era – initiated by Amenemhat I, but continued and completed by Senwosret I.

The temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari, although a unique and innovative monument, is firmly settled in the earlier tradition. Its architecture, relief decoration, statuary program and texts, bear direct or indirect references to the past. The Old and Middle Kingdom ideas, patterns and motifs may be traced on various levels, in the overall structure as well as in details. Sometimes the direct source of a feature may be pointed out; in most cases one can at least set forth an inspiration source in the architecture and decoration programme of the royal mortuary complexes, royal texts or iconography. The Deir el-Bahari case should be seen against the wider background of Hatshepsut’s activities, referring to the great periods and achievements of her illustrious ancestors: Memphite and Theban traditions joined thus in a masterly way formed a new, firm base for her rule.

It is well known that during the post-Amarna period, depictions and texts vandalized in the course of the religious revolution of Akhenaten were restored. On the whole, they were reworked without changes. However, in the case of some elements of the wall decoration, the repaired image differed somewhat from the original one. This is the case of liturgical utensils represented in the offering table scenes in the Chapel of Hatshepsut and Thutmose I, where instead of hes-vases with conical covers so-called Amun-vases were restored. These were hes-vases with ram-headed lids which are known to have been carried in processions heading to the Nile during the New Year celebrations. The paper aims at answering the questions, what was the reason for the destruction of the mentioned cult implements during the Amarna period and why in the course of the post-Amarna repair some of the libation vessels were restored as ‘Amun-vases’.

Main Sanctuary of Amun
Opis:
Hatshepsut and Tuthmosis III were represented as seemingly equal kings on the side walls of the Second Room of the Main Sanctuary of Amun in the Temple of Hatshepsut in Deir el-Bahari. Iconographic analysis reveals the relationship between the two rulers, demonstrating the different and discreet ways in which Hatshepsut emphasized her dominant position and Tuthmosis’s secondary one during their co-rule. The quality of the representations is just as crucial as their number for understanding their relationship. Hatshepsut used among others the symbolism of the cardinal points, orientation of figures and the hierarchy of attributes to emphasize the difference in their positions. The four scenes in question are the most representative examples of these fixed rules in the Deir el-Bahari temple.

Opis:
The representations of all the gods on the western wall of the Portico of Obelisks in Hatshepsut’s temple at Deir el-Bahari were destroyed during the Amarna period and restored under the reign of Ramesses II. In this paper, the inscriptions related to those restorations are commented on, along with a set of dipinti drawn on undecorated blocks below the dado lines. Those dipinti, of varying quality, represent the god Amun. Because of their location and form they were probably ‘restoration guidelines’ for the sculptors re-creating the destroyed images of the god. The paper’s aim is to reconfirm the dating of the restorations in this part of the temple and discuss the possible reasons for the dipinti creation.

Examination of the east wall of the Southern Chamber of Amun on the Upper Terrace of the Temple of Hatshepsut led to the discovery of a single vota coin, possibly of Theodosius I, AD 379–383. It is not clear whether the coin was lost where it was discovered or taken there with the rest of the material found in the fill. An assemblage of six coins minted in AD 330–348 was also discovered on the Upper Terrace, but this time at the Bark Hall. Hidden or lost, the coins testify to a late-Roman interest in the Temple of Hatshepsut.

Opis:
Throughout its existence the Temple of Hatshepsut, as well as two other royal sanctuaries, the temples of Mentuhotep II and Thutmose III, located in the great bay of Deir el-Bahari, have been under constant threat of falling rocks from the overhanging Theban cliff. The PCMA UW archaeological expedition at Deir el-Bahari, which has progressed with the study and conservation of the Hatshepsut temple since the 1960s, has implemented a project designed to address the issue of the protection of the temple from damages that could be caused by environmental processes (rainwater and seismic activity) affecting the Theban cliff behind the monument. In a geological survey of the fractured limestone cliff, the evidence from 31 observation stations was appraised and samples of Esna Shale and Theban Limestone were examined in order to ascertain the degree of the cliff’s instability and fragility. The results were used to prepare a 2D model presenting the environmental processes threatening the ancient substance.

Artykuł prezentuje zarys historii stosowanych technik i przebieg procesu budowlanego w świątyni Hatszepsut w Deir el-Bahari w Egipcie. Na wstępie opisano wygląd świątyni z XV wieku p.n.e. i przybliżono postać jej fundatorki. Następnie w oparciu o źródła, badania laboratoryjne i terenowe prześledzono podstawowe materiały i techniki budowlane wykorzystywane podczas wznoszenia świątyni i odniesiono je do aktualnego stanu badań. Wstępne analizy poszczególnych elementów konstrukcyjnych pozwoliły wykazać przywiązanie do tradycji, a jednocześnie nowatorskie na ówczesne czasy rozwiązania, jakie wykorzystali budowniczowie świątyni. Całość wraz z uwzględnieniem wyników badań starożytnych procesów budowlanych pozwala podjąć próbę poszerzenia wiedzy na temat historii budowy świątyni w okresie Nowego Państwa w Egipcie.
This paper presents an outline of the history of the techniques used and the course of the building process in the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari in Egypt. The introduction describes the appearance of the temple from the fifteenth century BC and discusses its founder. Then, based on the literature, laboratory and field studies, the basic building materials and techniques used during the construction of the temple were investigated and compared to the current state of research. Preliminary analyses of individual structural elements found and demonstrated attachment to tradition and, at the same time, solutions that were innovative for those times, used by the builders of the temple. The whole, together with the results of the study of ancient building processes, provides new insights into the history of the construction of the temple during the New Kingdom period in Egypt.

Opis:
The small room with a window situated in the south-east corner of the Upper Terrace of the Hatshepsut Temple at Deir el-Bahari has been interpreted by scholars to be either a slaughterhouse or a temple palace of the female pharaoh. Considering the axes of the Temple, the meaning assigned to the southern direction in connection with the solar theology, as well as the relief decoration preserved around the mentioned window, the paper proposes to reconstruct in the said space a symbolic residence of the deceased divine Hatshepsut, later turned into a palace of the sun god in its aspect of the day sun. Besides describing the changing function of the structure, it also looks into the transformation of the pharaoh into a divine being, the form of the sun god. Finally, the paper suggests possible original locations for some of the Hatshepsut statues, now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Opis:
An unusual iconographic motif—a fringed piece of linen—depicted in the Chapel of Hatshepsut, part of the queen’s temple at Deir el-Bahari, is examined in this paper as an illustration of the interest, well attested in Hatshepsut’s reign, in past artistic models/sources. The Chapel of Hatshepsut was intended for the mortuary cult of the female pharaoh, while the motif under discussion appears to have been inspired by decoration earlier by 500 years, found inside a burial chamber cut into the rock cliff of North Asasif, which is a natural continuation of the Deir el-Bahari amphitheater. The tomb (TT 311) belonged to Khety, a courtier of the Eleventh Dynasty pharaoh Mentuhotep II Nebhepetra. Assuming the validity of this iconographic link, the question arises concerning the accessibility of decorated burial chambers from the Eleventh-Dynasty in this area and their possible role as “pattern books” in the design of the early Eighteenth Dynasty private and royal mortuary monuments. In addition, the paper addresses the issue of the Chapel of Hatshepsut serving as a monumental “pattern book” for the Late Period Theban tombs.

Opis:
On the inner north wall of the Southern Room of Amun in the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari there is a depiction of the so-called frieze of objects, arranged in two rows. In the upper one vessels with oils containing four out of the so-called seven sacred oils and ʿntjw were located. It can be observed that in the sequence of the oils from the ‘seven sacred oils’, the third one – sft – has been replaced by ʿntjw and the two last oils are not depicted at all. In this paper the possible reasons for such a replacement as well as the role of both aromatic substances in the temple ritual in the early Eighteenth Dynasty are examined.
