Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to present the competences of deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students in English as a foreign language – in the opinion of their teachers. There were 19 English teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing participating in this study and they represent 11 Polish and 8 foreign universities. The participants were asked to complete a questionnaire, evaluating their DHH students’ competencies in reading, writing, lipreading/listening and speaking in English at the beginning and at the end of the students’ formal English classes at the university. The results indicate a good potential of this group of students in mastering basic language skills, but also their considerable difficulties in terms of mastering a foreign language at higher levels. The article also contains recommendations of teachers regarding teaching strategies to improve the quality of education of this group of students.

The aim of this article is to present changes in the education of deaf and hard of hearing persons over the last 7 years. The trends in the education of children with hearing impairment clearly point to the departure from special forms of education in favour of public education and integration. These changes, however, are a challenge for both teachers, parents and students with hearing impairment.

The purpose of the current study was to compare for the first time in Cyprus deaf and hard of hearing (d/hh) children’s written ability with that of adult d/hh persons. One group consisted of young children who were between 12–13 years of age and with congenital hearing losses (mean 80 dB HL in the better hearing ear at .5, 1, 2, 4 kHz), but without additional disabilities, who were attending the last grade of various general high schools in Cyprus (N = 11). They were trained orally in general schools, which they attended exclusively. The comparison group consisted of 11 adult d/hh persons (mean 75 dB HL in the better hearing ear at .5, 1,2, 4 kHz), all of whom were between 41–58 years of age, without any disabilities; they all are signing Deaf and had attended the school for the deaf in Cyprus. All participants were asked to produce written texts on topics of common interest (about everyday life). The analysis of the written texts was both quantitative and qualitative. Regarding the quantitative analysis, the written language was analysed by focusing on a) text content and structure, b) syntax, and c) vocabulary. Qualitative analysis was applied for further elaboration on the characteristics observed in the texts of the sample. This study revealed that d/hh children reached better levels of competence in written Greek compared with adult d/hh people, at least for the investigated aspects. The findings of the study may be of importance for educators and policy makers in Cyprus and elsewhere.

Opis:
The question of cognitive abilities of hard of hearing pupils is one of the most important problems encountered by surdopedagogy. Over the years various answers have been given to this question. Initially a hearing defect was identified with a lack of intellectual abilities, whereas studies conducted in recent years show that also in this population there are people with a high and very high intellectual potential. The aim of the present article is to present modern studies of the intellectual abilities of hard of hearing pupils and to point to their consequences for educational integration of this group of pupils. The presented studies show that pupils with hearing defects generally have the potential that should allow them to function well in the intellectual sphere among their hearing coevals. However, the condition for success in the sphere of educational integration is aiding the hard of hearing pupil in a systematic and competent way, starting with very early years of his life.

The article discusses articulation problems of hard-of-hearing school-age children that significantly diminish the intelligibility of their utterances, and are nevertheless not subjected to direct speech-therapy measures, and sometimes even resulting from improper corrective procedures. The study is a proposal for increasing the level of intelligibility of utterances through the consistent and long-term use of orthophonic exercises aimed to improve specific deficits that limit the possibilities of communication.

Opis:
The model of “crisis” is a culturally shared and widespread idea of human reactions to misfortunes such as accidents, diagnosis of disease, divorces, becoming a parent of a disabled child, and so on. The crisis model conveys the idea of coming to terms with unwanted experiences while advancing through various phases, for example, of denial, processing, and acceptance. The language of crises is integrated into Western emotional culture, particularly in the language used by caring professionals (e.g., social workers, psychologists, counselors, and health staff). Crisis talk is also frequent in the media, popular science books, and in everyday conversations when individual experiences are reported, debated, or discussed. Investigating the specific local culture of the Swedish world of the Deaf, to which families whose children have been diagnosed deaf belong, we aimed to extend the current understanding of crisis. How do parents and professionals make use of the crisis model when speaking about their own experiences, as well as the experiences of others? We observed that the crisis model served as a prop in such talk; it was used to compare, defend, criticize, and explain the behavior of others, but also to account for one’s own emotions and behavior. In the process, locally relevant identities and categorizations of others were constructed. The crisis model was originally a way of “diagnosing” parents’ emotional experiences when they learned about their children being deaf, but it has proven useful for other purposes in a context with abundant ideological differences.

Opis:
In recent years increased attention has been given in applied linguistics to the learning processes of various groups of special needs (SN) students, especially to those whose achievement is impeded by dyslexia or other learning difficulties. However, students with sensory impairment, particularly those who are Deaf or severely hard of hearing (HOH), seem to have remained on the periphery of second language acquisition (SLA) research although they constitute a highly interesting group both from a linguistic as well as a cultural point of view. Since the best approach to understanding how this special minority handles foreign language learning is by first exploring their so-called individual differences, a nationwide research project was launched in Hungary to investigate students’ language learning beliefs, motivation, strategy use and motivated learning behavior. As part of that project, the present paper intends to detail how self-related concepts of hearing impaired students at eight different SN schools  an be described. In order to gain an in-depth understanding, a mixed-method research design was employed. First, a barrier-free instrument was used to measure learner variables among 105 14-19-year-old Deaf and HOH learners. Then 31 individual interviews were conducted with selected students using maximum variety sampling. The quantitative data indicate that Deaf and HOH (D/HH) learners lack pronounced, well-developed and detailed future ideal L2 selves and corresponding visions to guide their learning. Another important finding is the paramount importance of language learning experience for our D/HH participants. Based on the analysis of the qualitative data, we can conclude that students’ language learning experiences are largely shaped by the choice of language used as the medium of education, the intensity and content of the English classes as well as how far students internalize extrinsic motives.

Opis:
The article presents the problems of deaf and hard of hearing people in education. This topic is widely analyzed. The text describes the difficulties experienced by students at school, at various stages of learning, and the barriers experienced by deaf and hard of hearing students at higher education levels. In general, the hearing deficit entails various communication complications. The person with hearing impairment has a limited opportunity to have different experiences and what is most important in the text – hearing loss or deafness often makes it impossible to gain an optimal education. There are different methods of educating people from the non-hearing environment, depending on the degree of hearing impairment. Hearing impaired student often has difficulty understanding Polish, as it is not always their first language (their first language may be the Polish sign language). Hearing impaired students sometimes don’t understand academic texts because they have weaker poorer vocabulary due to their communication dysfunction. Another issue is the social isolation of many people with hearing impairments which often have a dilemma which environment to integrate with – with hearing or hearing impaired? Teaching staff approaches such people in different ways. Stereotypes do not help in educational progress (for example, the assumption that such students communicate only in sign language). It is important to be aware of the types of hearing loss and the different types of hearing (each hearing impaired hears differently and needs an individual approach). Finally, the article discusses the issue of education of people with hearing impairment from the category of “space”. Through “space” you can understand here the environment (school space, classes and associated architectural-acoustic barriers) as well as the language of the Deaf. The sign language is specifically designed for living space (some of the signatures must be shown in the specified movement and direction, depending on the intention of the sender).

The aim of this article is to present the problems and phenomena present among the deaf and hearing-impaired people, and to study the trend estimation of this issue. The study was based on questionnaires given to the children of primary and middle schools, with the questionnaires including abstract expressions divided into thematic sections. The results present lack of comprehension of the abstract expressions by the hearing-impaired children, especially those expressions which are used the least in the everyday language. The older the students, the more language experience but at the same time the less confidence in their own abilities they have. While working with the hearing-impaired children, it is important to remember about paying attention to the issue of abstract expressions such as metaphors, idiomatic expressions, even the prepositional phrases or the names of categories and professions. It would definitely make it easier for them to understand written texts and simplify broadly defined functioning in our society.

This papers presents the results of research that was aimed at testing the performance of deaf and hard of hearing (D/HOH) high school students in learning English as a foreign language (EFL). The research examined the correlation between the age (number of years of learning EFL), the degree of hearing loss, the sex and the school success in the Serbian language with the achievements of the D/HOH students in solving an English Placement test. The differences in achievements between D/HOH students and those with a normal hearing status were also compared and analyzed. The results of the research indicate that although the D/HOH students achieve poorer results in learning English compared to students with a normal hearing status, they can be successful in learning English as a foreign language. The D/HOH students have some difficulties in learning English vocabulary and grammar. They need more time to successfully master a foreign language, so it is necessary to take into account the specificities of this category of EFL students and to adapt teaching methods and resources to suit their needs.

The objective of this study was to compare the preferences for various physical activities and reasons for the lack of interest by Czech teenagers with sensory disabilities in physical education classes. A non-standardized questionnaire was used to collect the data. The sample was based on the following features: a) a participant had to be deaf or hard of hearing, b) a participant had to have a visual impairment, and c) had to have been educated in special educational settings. In this study participated 24 teenagers who are deaf or hard of hearing (16 boys and 8 girls, an average age of 14.3 ± 1.2 years) and 26 teenagers with a visual impairment (16 boys and 10 girls, an average age of 14.1 ± 1.2 years). Both absolute and relative frequencies were used to describe the data. The differences between teenagers who are deaf or hard of hearing and teenagers with a visual impairment were assessed using the non-parametric Mann-Whitney U-test, the chi-squared test and, for low frequencies, the Fisher's exact test. Tests were performed at a level of α = 0.05. Statistical tests did prove significant difference in preference for the various physical education where most of teenagers who are deaf or hard of hearing preferred athletics and football in physical education classes. Further, in leisure activities, teenagers who are deaf or hard of hearing significantly more often do sports activities, while teenagers with a visual impairment are more sedentary. Our results have proven that, besides sport, the most frequently preferred leisure activity in both-groups was computers and possibly mobile technologies.

The purpose of this study was to analyze differences in students' viewing in the second stage of elementary schools for the deaf or hard of hearing in physical education classes with other studies. In this study participated 86 students who are deaf or hard of hearing (56 boys and 30 girls; an average age of 14.3 ± 1.4 years). The one-sample and two-sample t-test were used to compare result of our study with results of the populations' studies in the Czech Republic and at Slovakia. All tests were performed at a level of α = .05. In the Importance and Demandingness indicator, statistical significance was confirmed. Students in our study considered physical education to be more important (2.02 ± 0.96, t = -2.777; p = 0.007) and demanding (3.23 ± 0.98, t = -3.009; p = 0.003) than students from Czech and Slovak general schools. In comparison of our study with the results of students from Czech general schools, the mean value was lower in the Popularity indicator and Czech students from general schools considered physical education to be more popular than our students. In comparison of small scopes study, statistically significant differences were found, where students in our study view physical education as more demanding (3.23 ± 0.98, t = -2.605; p = 0.010) compared to Slovak students with sensory disabilities. We can conclude that there is a trend where students who are deaf or hard of hearing view physical education as more important and demanding than students from general schools in both the Czech Republic and Slovakia. In addition, Czech students who are deaf or hard of hearing view physical education as more demanding compared to Slovak students with sensory disabilities.

The profession of a special educator is still the subject of interest of theoreticians and practitioners, encourages reflection and searching for answers to the questions that have been asked for years: Who is a special educator? Who should he/she be? What personality traits should he/she possess? What professional competences should he/she possess? It is difficult to give a clear answer to these questions. Especially that the profession of a special educator, including surdopedagogue, is a profession of public trust and therefore the requirements for people practicing this profession are high. This article attempts to answer the question: What professional competences should a modern surdopedagogue have? As the surdopedagogue is – next to the student – the link in the process of diagnosis, rehabilitation, upbringing and teaching, it was decided to give the floor to deaf and hard of hearing adults. Therefore, 30 deaf and hard of hearing people aged 19 to 31 years (19 females and 11 males) were surveyed. In the undertaken research with qualitative-quantitative methodology, a questionnaire survey of the author’s design was used. The results of the research showed that, according to the respondents, a surdopedagogue should, above all, have the competences of cooperation such as patience, perseverance and understanding and respect for the culture of Deaf. It is also crucial for the surdopedagogue to have praxeological competences, in particular in the field of knowledge about the culture of the Deaf and communication competences – in the field of Polish Sign Language. In addition, surdopedagogue should also have predisposition and be guided by a “mission” in practicing this profession.

Social comparisons, seeing oneself in relation to others, are universal, common, and perhaps even necessary. In a study of parents of deaf children, intense, open, and mutual examinations were voiced in parental groups, meetings between parents and professionals, and interviews. These comparisons were generated in a specific situation created by successful claims for separate milieus advocated by the Deaf movement. The local culture, “the deaf world,” was characterized by close proximity and a highly charged ideological moral climate. With the central argument that strong integration breeds comparisons and examinations, we conclude that the integration of parents creates a situation perfect for drawing comparisons, creating not only cohesion, but also renewed separatist distinctions, expressed in terms of moral examinations, competition and envy. Studying the content and details of comparisons in any given field makes the particular morality that is bred, fed, and elaborated obvious.
