SCAPEGOAT RITUAL
Opis:
The author puts forward the hypothesis that the 'scapegoat' ritual had been introduced to Greece under the influence of the Phoenicians. That opinion is based on five arguments: 1. the etymology of the term suba/xos (connected with Hebr. zebah and Phoen. zbh 'sacrifice'); 2. the great role of the number seven at the 'scapegoat' ritual in Greece and at the Semitic rituals (including the scapegoat rituals in the Old Testament); 3. the possibility that the god Apollo and some elements of his cult originate in Phoenicia; 4. the presence of the scapegoat ritual in Syria-Palestine (beginning from the third millennium B.C.); 5. the fact that there were some cultural connections between the Phoenicians and the Ionians in the early Iron Age.

Opis:
As a part of the series on female deities and demons in the Indo-European culture, the article begins by establishing Helen’s divine character in the Greek tradition and religion. The first area where the Indo-European character of Helen is displayed concerns the etymology of her name, which has been the subject of discussion and controversy throughout several decades. The most prominent theories are presented, including the concept of Pokorny and West to explain her name as ‘Lady of Light’ from the Proto-Indo-European root *swel- or *swelh1-, the idea of Skutsch to connect Helen with Vedic Saṛanyū, the etymology by Clader relying on the local Greek ritual practices and finally the new etymology provided by Pinault explaining the name as ‘having a year like a thread’ from Proto-Indo-European *suh1-l̥-h1eno. The second part of the article deals with the cultural, literary and religious attributes of Helen which connect her with the Indo-European world, especially with the Vedic tradition. The most interesting aspects include the issue of Helen’s parenthood and her birth, her relationship with her brothers – the Dioskouroi – the prototypical Indo-European Divine Twins, as well as similarities with Vedic goddesses Uṣās – Dawn and Sūryā́ – the Sun Princess. The final part of the article establishes Helen as the Greek representation of the Indo-European myth of an abducted wife. Relying heavily on the analysis of Jamison, it draws on the similarities between the passages in the book III of the Mahābhārata and the book III of the Iliad, which from the comparative perspective explains well the inclusion of this scene in the Homeric epic and Helen’s role in it as well as sheds more light on the Indo-European practices regarding marriage. Lastly, the article mentions a connection between Helen and Vedic Saṛanyū by the story of eidolon – a phantom, which both characters created at certains points in some literary traditions.

The Polish version of the article was published in “Roczniki Humanistyczne,” vol. 63 (2015), issue 3. In his work Deipnosophistae (IX 369b), Athenaeus discusses four Greek names for turnip, (Brassica campestris L., syn. Brassica rapa L.): βουνιάς, γογγυλίς, Laconian γάστρα and Boeotian ζεκελτίς. The three first names are clearly motivated by the Greek vocabulary. The fourth term remains obscure in terms of its etymology and word-formation. According to Athenaeus (IX 369b), two Greek writers, Amerias and Timachidas, refer to a dialectal (evidently Thessalian) term ζακελτίς f. ‘bottle gourd, calabash, Lagenaria siceraria (Molina) Standl.’. In his lexicon, Hesychius of Alexandria registers two related glosses: ζακελτίδες · κολοκύνται. The former refers to the Thessalian lexis. The latter one (wrongly printed as ζακυνθίδες · κολοκύνται in M. Schmidt’s and K. Latte’s editions) demonstrates a shift of the liquid consonant λ [l] to [ṷ], which is a typical Cretan phenomenon, attested also in the Hesychian lexicon, see e.g. [1] αὐκάν · ἀλκήν. The same phonological process of the velarization of *λ [l] is also registered in epigraphic texts found in three towns of Central Crete (Gortyna, Leben, Phaistos). Thus, it seems that the Hesychian term ζακαυθίδες ‘bottle gourds’ (derived from the earlier *ζακαλθίδες) must be seen as a dialectal form typical of Central Cretan.

Dozens of thousands Greek children lived in the childtowns in the 1940 and 1950s. Although this experience had profound consequences to their lives, there is to this day no serious study of what exactly was the impact of the childtowns on the children’s values and way of life. I interviewed four children and asked them about the differences between the childtowns and their villages. The key finding is that most children first came in touch with – and chose to accept – a modern and urban way of life in the childtowns. This suggests that despite the objections about the ideological motivations and use of the childtowns, these institutions had a profound impact on Modern Greek cultural identity.

The paper demonstrates rules and some of the basic applications of metarhythmia that is one of the compositional techniques used by Greek tragedians. The presentation of the examples is proceeded by discussion on the phenomenon of the so-called verbal rhythm, and distinction between metrical pattern and its syllabic realization. In the context of metarhythmia, verbal rhythm produces rhythmic ambiguity that reveals itself in specific syllabic realizations of metrical patterns. The result of the process is used by poets to generate consecutive rhythmic phrases (cola), and thus to shape artistically the structure of a song.

Patrick Leigh Fermor’s “Hellen-Romaic Dilemma”The article discusses one of the guises of the dichotomy between Hellene and Romios, a trope popular among researchers of modern Greek identity. It discusses the provenance and usage of both notions, drawing on the material presented by the English traveller and writer Patrick Leigh Fermor in his monograph Roumeli Travels in Northern Greece (1966). Fermor identified 64 opposing pairs of concepts and situations, and demonstrated the characteristics of Hellene and Romios in relation to each pair. This comparison produces the images of the logical, westernised Hellene, who reveres the accomplishments of ancient Greeks, and the spontaneous, oriental, somewhat backwards Romios, who longs for Byzantium. Although the picture Fermor paints is exaggerated (and slightly whimsical), it nevertheless helps to understand that the image of Hellene, and not that of Romios, is one in which modern Greeks believe and for which they strive.Patricka Leigh Fermora rozterki helleńsko-romejskieAutor omawia jedno z ujęć dychotomii między Hellenem a Romiosem, popularnej w badaniach nad nowogrecką tożsamością. Ukazuje proweniencję i sposób użycia obu pojęć, posługując się materiałem zaprezentowanym przez angielskiego pisarza i podróżnika, Patricka Leigh Fermora, w jego monografii Roumeli Travels in Northern Greece (wyd. 1966).

The purpose of this article is to show that the Greek drama for Albert Camus was an expression of the universal experience of the cruelty of fate. Dramatic stories of Oedipus and Prometheus were for him a kind of map of the world with space selected for the man and his denial of suffering. Camus knows that in the tragedy even a man who is a „plaything of the gods”, maintains strength and honor in his defeat, and that the hero embroiled in horror stories, preserves the dignity, which adds faith and courage. This is where Camus found the connotation between the concept of fate and absurd, because absurd can’t be defeated by force of human will, a munity directed against absurd does not save the Man from misfortune.

This article presents and compares four different interpretations of the Homeric concept of 'self'. According to the first, the Homeric man has no concept of himself as a psychic unity, but only as a number of physical and psychical organs (Bruno Snell). The second says that he perceives himself as a complex but unified structure of psychical and physical elements (Norman Austin). According to the next view, the Homeric hero possesses the idea of reason which is able to create a unifying harmony among his various psychic powers and which constitutes the real self of a human being (Arbogast Schmitt). The fourth interpretation holds that the Homeric man identifies himself with his 'Leib', which is the seat of all his sensations, feelings and thoughts (Hermann Schmitz).

After a long period in exile, some returned to theirhome country and began a new life, struggling with economic, familial, social, linguistic and cultural problems. The history of the Greek refugees and their re-immigration illustrates the irreversibility and irreparability of the social and psychological damage done by forcedmigration. Returns to the homeland did not reinstate balance, and did not ease the dilemmasinitiated by the first resettlement. History is stuck in the memories as well as the everyday lives of the return migrants and their social milieus; this creates divides, mutual strangeness, and social tensions. Compulsory movement of populations – leading to the severance of connections with one’s fatherland, hometown, mother tongue, and home culture – causes subsequent conflicts and identity problems which continue to haunt those who returned to their birthplace.

The article aims to present one of the possible interpretations of a unique noun ekchyton found in the epigram of Palladas of Alexandria AP IX 395. As its meaning seems at least doubtful, it makes the satisfactory translation and interpretation of the poem utterly unachievable. The problem may be solved, if we recognize the word ekchyton as a sociolect, which corresponds with another noun egchytos that is sufficiently attested in ancient Greek literature. The analysis of source texts lets us interpret the meaning of the word egchytos as a kind of elegant baking that consists of finely ground flour, a large amount of honey, eggs and cottage cheese or sour milk. Ekchyton, in that case, can be interpreted as ‘a honey cake with cheese’.

She begins with a description of the basic syntactic functions of Greek prepositions, then goes on to analyze the status of two selected prepositions, pointing to the differences in their meaning and their dependence on the connectivity with specific noun cases. The last part of the text is devoted to the pre-verbal value of the prepositions under the study and the compound verbs based on them, which are combined with the verbs without prefixes, which are their basis. This starting point allows conclusions of a syntactic-semantic nature based on the use of the studied forms in the Greek New Testament texts.

The purpose of the present article is the analysis of the Greek terms expressing the concept of love ἔρως (eros), στοργή (storge), φιλία (philia) and ἀγάπη (agape) and the impact of their semantic character on the uses appearing in the Bible. The author is primarily concerned with the study of etymology and determination of historical changes in the meaning of the analyzed terms, their use in secular and religious literature, in classical and late Greek. The next step is a detailed analysis of the verbs φιλέω (phileo) and ἀγαπάω (agapao), which are the only of the four terms to appear in the Gospels. The text ends by indicating for each form used in the Gospels its semantic scope and checking whether it corresponds to the basic semantic features of each of the verbs.

The subject of old age is rarely addressed in Greek vase painting and usually appears in scenes from mythology or daily life. Older men in these representations are Homeric heroes, esteemed as kings, leaders and sages who have rendered great services to society; older people are also present in scenes of everyday life – usually as fathers or child supervisors. depending on the technique of decoration, these figures were characterised mostly through hair colour (as well as thinning hair and baldness in the case of men), a stooped and frail frame or an obese one. Besides, on red-figure and white-ground vessels it was possible to render facial wrinkles. These features apply predominantly to the images of men, because due to the social ideal of kalokagathia Athenian women were usually depicted as timelessly young. The article contains an analysis of selected depictions of the elderly in vase painting in terms of their iconography and the types of scenes in which they appear, including references to the written sources.

The oral form of transmission of the early Greek epics allowed for the free shaping of content by the poet, whose task was to create a coherent narrative, intelligible for all the listeners, while maintaining its key feature – authenticity. This, however, lead to variability in content due to the desire to supplement, that is to show detailed presentations of events or to adapt these to local traditions. Incongruities in content between individual customary versions of these stories are illustrated in relics of vase painting. This article discusses the iconography of scenes associated with the Doloneia, book 10 of the Iliad, in reference to the contents of the epic. Based on a few examples still extant, a formal analysis was conducted on the themes of the main structure and secondary characters shown in Greek illustrations from the Archaic and Classical periods, as well as of southern Italic examples, allowing us to show how versions of the story formed at a given time and to reflect on the changes introduced.

Greek tragedy, as an expression shaped in the course of a performance, requires not only extending the field of investigation to include extra-philosophical interpretations, but also searching for its sources within the framework of the Greek thinking, described most profundly by Aristotle. The tradition of the Aristotle is inducing us to the reply to numerous questions, concerning Dionysus, as well as composition of the tragedy. Adopting his intellectual perspective provokes us to seek the genesis of tragedy in Greek logos. Apart of being a language (it referred to the notional structure of the Greek universe, defined the way of thinking, and provide a set or rules regarding presentation) it was also an order organizing the sense of action. It combined with doing, provokes action and constituted a reflection of the gestures made on stage.

The author presents the new fragments of Sappho (P. Koeln 21351 + 21376) and Archilochus (P. Oxy. LXIX 4708), gives a short review of the research to date, makes some textual and intepretative suggestions of his own, and adds an 'apparatus criticus' to the text of Sappho proposed by Gronewald and Daniel. At the end of the first fragment of Sappho (line 8), he reads 'qala/mois a)ei/dw' ('nuptias cano'), which, as a periphrastic generic term, together with a possible mention of the poems for the girls in the lost part of the same line, would cover the whole field of Sappho's poetry. In line 18 of the Cologne papyrus (i.e., line 10 of the second poem), he reads the fifth letter as 'phi' (following West), but then puts forward an entirely new reading of the rest of the disputable phrase, suggesting 'e)/rwi fi/la qei=san' ('amori indulgentem'); if the fifth letter is 'delta' (the reading the Cologne papyrologists strongly insist upon), he alternatively proposes 'de/ma qei=san'. As to the new Archilochus, in the author's opinion it is unlikely that lines 21-25 (in which Hercules' name appears) allude to Telephus' flight from the enemy, since the function of the whole 'exemplum' is exclusively to extol the success of that hero.

The stingray, trugón, is not named after the turtledove trugón, as is usually assumed: the fish is not a ‘sea turtledove’. It should rather be analyzed as *ptrug-on- ‘the winged one’, with the zero grade of pteryx, ‘wing’: the ray’s fins are similar to wings, and their slow flapping movement gives the impression that the ray flies rather than it swims. A zero-grade form of the name of the wing is attested in Iranian, but is probably not to be sought in Slavic ‘hawk’. The etymological form, then, should be reconstructed *(π) trugón; the attested form is trugón, with long [u:] warranted in metrical occurrences, and analogical after that of the bird name trugón ‘turtledove’, because of the synchronic system in which many bird names were transferred to fish, the bird name behaving as the model. Thus two originally distinct words, trugón ‘turtledove’ and * trugón ‘stingray’ merged into one single word.

In this paper, the traditional Syriac Anaphora of St. James is described in its current form. Numerous Greek borrowings are present in the Syriac text of the Anaphora, testifying to the long-term contact of the Syriac language with the Greek. Some of the Greek words became known in Syriac before the Christian era, and they can be found in other dialects of Aramaic. Some were borrowed when the Assyrians embraced Christianity, and are kept traditionally alongside the Syriac words still used in the Liturgy. Some words were later incorporated into the Anaphora of St. James, who certainly had never used them.

The Greek city of Emporion is one of the few Greek emporia which ultimately became a polis. Consequently, the city had to adapt the previously held structures of an emporion to cope with the new circumstances which being a polis required; thus its urban space, territory, population, laws, government had to be modifi ed in the conversion from one situation to another. Furthermore, this change had to be fulfi lled in the midst of a non-Greek environment, which obviously had consequences in the development of Greek identity within the city. Fortunately, in the case of Emporion we have both archaeological and literary evidence (although not very abundant) to observe these processes. The aim of this paper is, consequently, to consider this evidence in order to see how interactions worked in Emporion itself as well as in the surrounding region in different historical moments and how those interactions contributed to shaping several interrelated identities within the Greek city, which also became a strong point for building the identity of the non-Greek peoples in that region of north-eastern Iberia.

Apelatyw κατσαμπάς dokumentuje w gwarach nowogreckich dwa znaczenia (1. ‘studnia’; 2. ‘rodzaj żurawia’). Badacze greccy wywodzą ów dialektyzm z języka tureckiego, por. tur. kasaba ‘miasteczko’, dial. ‘kanał nawadniający’. Jednak wywód nowogreckiego wyrazu bezpośrednio ze źródła arabskiego wydaje się bardziej prawdopodobny, por. arab. qaṣaba ‘forteca, twierdza; przedmieście’, qaṣabä(t) ‘rura, tchawica’. Wyraz arabski został najpierw zapożyczony przez Kreteńczyków podczas arabskiej okupacji wyspy Krety (ok. 824-961) i za pośrednictwem dialektu kreteńskiego zaadaptowany przez inne lokalne gwary nowogreckie w dobie bizantyńskiej (961–1204). Dialektyzm nowogrecki κατσαμπάς nie został poświadczony w słownikach dialektu kreteńskiego, chociaż w kreteńskiej hydronimii i toponimii występuje pospolicie jednostka onimiczna Κατσαμπάς.
The appellative κατσαμπάς is attested in the Modern Greek dialects in two different meanings (1. ‘well’; 2. ‘a kind of well-sweep’). The Greek linguists believe that it was borrowed directly from Turkish kasaba ‘country town’, dial. ‘irrigating channel’. It is suggested that the Modern Greek appellative is of Arabic origin, cf. Arab. qaṣaba ‘fortress, citadel; suburb’, also qaṣabä(t) ‘pipe, windpipe’. The Arabic word was first adopted by the Cretan Greeks during the Arabic occupation of the island of Crete (ca. 824-961 AD) and later the Cretan borrowing was gradually distributed in the Byzantine Greek world. The Modern Greek appellative κατσαμπάς, which is very well attested in the Cretan toponymy and hydronymy, is not registered in any dictionary of the Cretan dialect. However, a folk character and a limited distribution of the word in question is confirmed by lexical data collected in some regions of Hellas and Cyprus. The term κατσαμπάς means ‘well’ in Karpathos, the island lying near Crete. A different meaning ‘a kind of well-sweep’ is attested in Rhodes, Cos and Cyprus. According to Greek linguists, the Modern Greek noun denoting ‘well’ (or ‘a kind of well-sweep’) was directly borrowed from Turkish kasaba ‘country town’, dial. ‘irrigating channel’. Of course, the Turkish appellative is of Arabic origin, cf. Arab. qaṣaba ‘fortress, citadel’, also ‘suburb’. I cannot agree with this explanation for two reasons. Firstly, the Arabic language contains two homonymic words: qaṣaba (1) ‘fortress, citadel; suburb’ and qaṣabä(t) (2) ‘pipe, windpipe’. The Modern Greek dialectal form κατσαμπάς m. ‘well; well-sweep’ seems to derive from the latter Arabic appellative (and not the former one). Secondly, the Cretans had to borrow the Arabic word during the Arabic occupation of the island (ca. 824-961 AD). Cristoforo Buondelmonti, the author of Descriptio insule Crete (written in 1417), gives a strong mention on the important well (Lat. puteus), which was located away from Candia, the capital of Crete during the Venetian rule (now Herakleion). The drinking water from this well was sold to town’s inhabitants (v. 734-736): [...] puteus est Cazamba dictus. Aquam cuius pueri per Candiam civitatem ferentes vendunt magnis vocibus exclamantes “there is a well called Cazamba. Some boys sell its water, bearing it into the city Candia and crying there with great voices”. The 15th-century name of the extra-Candian well (Lat. Cazamba, Mod. Gk. Κατσαμπάς) could not be borrowed by the Turkish mediation, as the Ottoman army conquered Crete in the middle of 17th century (1645-1669), i.e. two centuries later. What is more, the Cretan toponym Κατσαμπάς is registered as early as in 1279 AD. It is highly probable that the well called Κατσαμπάς in Candia was created and named by the Arabs.

The article shows how some of Greek authors from different epochs arranged the problem of the language communication among the Greeks and the non-Greeks. This question emerged gradually, however it appeared perspicuously but in the Hellenistic period, and in time of the Roman Empire. If sometimes this problem was ignored the reason could be that from the time of Alexander the Great the Greek language was a primary one on large areas of the ancient world. Nevertheless, the non-Greeks unknowing the Greek language appeared in Greek literature up to the end of antiquity, and the poets and writers solved the issue of language communication in a more or less probable way. One of them was introducing a professional interpreter particularly in the royal palaces.

Stanisław Stachowski’s “Beiträge zur Geschichte der griechischen Lehnwörter im Osmanisch-Türkischen”, published in Folia Orientalia 13 (1971 [1972]), 267-298, started a long series of historicallexicographical studies which the great Polish scholar devoted to foreign elements found in the Turkish Transkriptionstexte. Since then a number of scientific editions of these texts have however come out, particularly, in recent years, Filippo Argenti’s (1533), Pietro Ferraguto’s (1611) and Arcangelo Carradori’s (1650) very important handwritten lexicographical works, which had been but little or not at all known so far. As the aforementioned as well as other publications provide much material on the European loanwords in Ottoman-Turkish, which are mostly Graecisms, this paper aims to supplement Stachowski’s work both by adding data to original entries and presenting new words of Greek origin. It has to be pointed out that all the material comes from Transkriptionstexte dating from before Meninski’s Thesaurus (1680).

An edition of an autograph manuscript of Adam Krokiewicz (1890-1977), a professor of the University of Warsaw, famous for his research on ancient philosophy and literature. The manuscript seems the beginning of a much larger work, either lost or never finished. In this fragment the author looks for the rationale of the Greek belief that future events can be foreseen; he also discusses the relationship between fate and the gods' will and shows that Greek deities were often jealous of human happiness. Krokiewicz's text is preceded by a short introduction written by one of his disciples, Juliusz Domanski.

Artykuł jest dokładną analizą treści książki D.P. Bécharda Syntax of New Testament Greek. A Student’s Manual .
The article constitutes an in-depth analysis of D.P. Béchard’s Syntax of New Testament Greek: A Student’s Manual. The author conceives of the book as a coursebook for the students of the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome that will aid them in learning the syntax of New Testament Greek. Detailed analysis of the content of the book makes it clear that the author has overlooked many important aspects of biblical Greek. Because of that, Syntax of New Testament Greek: A Student’s Manual cannot be treated as a comprehensive overview of New Testament Greek but only as a grammar coursebook at the rudimentary level.

The purpose of the paper is to research the issue of preservation and promotion of the linguistic heritage of the North Azovian Greeks – Urum and Roumean languages, to investigate the request of Ukrainian Greeks to learn Modern Greek, which is the official language of the metropolis of representatives of this ethnic community, as well as to analyze the general linguistic situation in the mentioned environment, etc. The research methodology is based on the scientific principles of historicism, objectivity and social approach using general scientific and special historical methods. The scientific research carried out allows us to state that for more than a quarter of a century of its activity (starting in 1995), thanks to the support of domestic and foreign government and public institutions, the Federation of greek communities of Ukraine worked hard towards the realization of one of its fundamental statutory tasks - popularization/preservation of linguistic heritage of the North Azovian Greeks, meeting the requests of the Greek community of Ukraine to learn the language of the metropolis, etc. The Federation of greek communities of Ukraine tried to create a favorable basis for their further functioning, and, therefore, preservation. At the same time, the request of Ukrainian Greeks to study these languages remains insignificant to this day, especially regarding the Urum and Roumean languages. The analysis of the dynamics of the request of Ukrainian Greeks for their study shows that in recent years, it was possible to observe a certain increase in the number of people willing to study the Modern Greek, and this is quite logical. It should also be noted that the original Urum and Roumean languages are currently on the verge of extinction, which was recorded in 2018 in the UNESCO Atlas of the World’s Languages in Danger, becoming more and more limited exclusively to the sphere of everyday communication of the older generation of the North Azovian Greeks

Marcellus of Side, a physician and didactic poet of the second century AD, mentions fourteen exclusive ichthyonyms in the preserved fragment De piscibus, extracted from the 42-volume epic poem entitled Cheironides. The author discusses Greek names of fish and sea animals that appear only in Marcellus’ work. They belong to the so-called hapax legomena. The following appellatives are carefully analyzed: ἁλιπλεύμων, ἅρπη, βούφθαλμος, βράχατος, γαρίσκος, γερῖνος, ἐρυθρός, θρανίας, θῦρος, κόλλουρος, περόνη, τραγίσκος, τυφλῖνος, χρύσοφος. It is assumed that Marcellus of Side introduced a number of ichthyonyms of Pamphylian origin, e.g. Pamph. θῦρος (< *θύρσος), βράχατος (instead of βάτραχος), ἐρυθρός (= ἐρυθρῖνος), θρανίας (instead of θράνις), χρύσοφος (instead of χρύσοφρυς). Also new identifications of fish are suggested, e.g. Gk. βούφθαλ- μος ‘large-eye dentex, Dentex macrophthalmus Bloch’, Gk. κόλλουρος ‘slender sunfish, Ranzania laevis Pennant’. All the discusssed ichthyonyms, as well as names of other sea animals, are explained from the point of view of phonology, morphology or semantics, e.g. ἁλιπλεύμων ‘jellyfish’ (literally ‘sea lung’), ἅρπη ‘a kind of ray fish’ (literally ‘a kite’).

Scholars agree that question of existence was ignored by the ancient Greeks. The main cause of such a state was the way that the ancients perceived the world. We can found this imgage not only in their mythology, but also in their philosophy. Jacek Wojtysiak claims, for antic Hellenes the world was relatively contingent, which means that for them anything that was, was not something necessary, because the whole reality was constantly changing. Therefore, the universe and its laws could receive different form that they have now. But the ancients didn’t perceived reality as radically contingent, which means that they received the universe as eternal and it was impossible that it would not exist. This is the way Greeks concentrated on the question of nature of the reality, what was it basic substance, and what decide that the universe was what it was.Charles H. Kahn’s considerations are important in the study of the ancient conception of being and existence. Basing on the analysis of language of ancient Greeks, he answers the question why they didn’t considered the question of existence. Kahn claims that for ancients the main issue in Greek’s theory of being was not the question of the existence, but truthfulness meaning of the verb einai. This linguistic investigations are useful because, as he claims, the way how we are perceiving the reality depends on language we use. It also applies to ontological consideration.

The paper deals with the problem of definite article in the Gothic Bible. More specifically, it concentrates on the differences and similarities of use between the target language, i.e. Gothic, and the source language, i.e. Greek, with special attention being paid to the case of the article – nominative, genitive, dative or accusative. It is part of a larger endeavor aiming at the analysis of the whole Gothic Bible in this respect. This time the Gospel of John is taken into consideration, following an earlier study which concentrated on the Gospel of Matthew. In the paper it will not only be observed how frequently Gothic omits the defi nite article in places where Greek uses it in the Gospel of John, but also in what way the cases of the definite article vary in both languages due to their grammatical specificities.

Aim. This article presents the status of the Greek Catholic Church during a defined period. It brings the functioning of this religion in the period of normalisation of society closer. Methods. Our study is the result of archival and document-based research, as well as expert studies and monographs dealing with the above-mentioned issue. Results. Although we can define the period studied in our research as a period of relative freedom when compared with the years 1950–1967, it cannot be perceived as a total liberation of the Church. Unfortunately, the political reality was also reflected in the life and functioning of the Church itself. The Greek Catholic Church and its leaders understood that without the necessary support from the state and regime, they would lose their freedom mainly attained in the first half of 1968. Conclusion. The Greek Catholic Church had to face several important and ground-breaking tasks that were to ensure its stability for functioning and administration after 18 years of its non-existence. This involved receiving state consent for Consecrator ThDr. Basil (Vasiľ) Hopko, leadership of the Greek Catholic Church in general, consolidation of relationships and conflict resolution between the Greek Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church, or even the area of support and consent for building its own institute of theological formation.

Trzy pierwsze apelatywy mają doskonałą motywację w zachowanej leksyce greckiej. Czwarty wyraz pozostaje etymologicznie i słowotwórczo niejasny.
In his work Deipnosophistae (IX 369b) Athenaeus discusses four Greek names for ‘turnip, Brassica campestris L., syn. Brassica rapa L.’, namely βουνιάς, γογγυλίς, Laconian γάστρα and Boeotian ζεκελτίς. Three first appellatives are clearly motivated by the Greek vocabulary. The fourth term is unclear etymologically. According to Athenaeus (IX 369b), two Greek writers, Amerias and Timachidas, refer to a dialectal (evidently Thessalian) term ζακελτίς f. ‘bottle gourd, Lagenaria siceraria (Molina) Standl’. In his lexicon Hesychius of Alexandria registers two related glosses: ζακελτίδες · κολοκύνται. The former refers to the Thessalian item. The latter one (wrongly printed as ζακυνθίδες · κολοκύνται in M. Schmidt’s and K. Latte’s editions) demonstrates a change of the liquid stop λ [l] to [ṷ], which is explained as a Cretan phenomenon, attested also in the Hesychian lexicon, see e.g. [1] αὐκάν · ἀλκήν. The same phonological process of velarization of *λ [l] is securely confirmed in three towns of Central Crete (Gortys, Leben, Phaestus) by numerous epigraphic texts. It is highly probable that the Hesychian term ζακαυθίδες ‘calabash gourds’ (as if from *ζακαλθίδες) must be treated as a dialectal form typical of Central Cretan.

The verb ὑπάρχω, ‘to belong to’, is frequently used in Greek papyri to denote possession in legal documents. The possessor in such constructions can be indicated by a personal pronoun in the dative or genitive. In this article, I show that the diachronic scribal and phraseological variation that is found in legal formulae with this verb points not only to an increase in the use of the genitive pronoun by individual scribes in certain constructions, but also to a general change from a dative to a genitive case in liability clauses in the Byzantine period. These changes may be connected to the process of dative case syncretism in post-Classical Greek.

Aim. The article discusses the status of the Greek Catholic Church from 1948 to 1950. It also presents how this period was presented through media. Since it is possible to investigate this aspect within the framework of a comparison of several media channels, we have decided to introduce the comparison through the perspective of the daily-newspaper Rudé právo. Methods. The findings of our research study are based on the data collected from archival and documentary sources, as well as professional studies and monographs related to the above-mentioned topic. Results. Based on our research topic, we can understand how the attitude towards the Greek Catholic Church changed after the events of February 1948 and what impact the change of regime had on its functioning. Regarding media, we can observe how the pressure on the Greek Catholic Church changed in relation to the regime change and individual historical events, and how the media expressed its opinion on the Church. Conclusion. Media is not only a source of information for people, but it also creates public opinion, and therefore, it was extremely important to control this state apparatus in the past. We must understand that availability of information in the 1950s and today is significantly different. Catholic periodicals were almost non-existent and thus, people often received misleading or false information. Through our research, which is presented in the tabular presentation of data, we can discover the increasing pressure against the Church, and the response of the public to the Church.

This essay considers how #MeToo’s recent iteration in the Greek context has stirred trouble in the theatre, instigating a politics of resistance against obdurate histories of injustice against women’s bodies in the industry whilst also creating spaces for solidarity among performers and theatre makers. My main intention is to examine how the above issues form part of the same ecology of precarity that dovetailed when the Greek #MeToo began to take force. In doing so, I will first focus on two recent major incidents occurring in the country’s flagship state theatre, the National Theatre of Greece, which involved two of its former male artistic directors in order to discuss how debates around precarity and exclusion in the theatre industry were unearthed. I will then shift focus to Greek artists’ self-organizing tactics through the examples of the activist network Support Art Workers and the Actors’ Trade Union who have started developing codes of conduct and strategies to challenge the devaluation and feminization of artistic labour. The article will further make reference to specific developments across the international theatre industry that connect to the tenets of the #MeToo which offer apertures for progressive change in the field of Greek theatre and its institutions.

Opis:
The author discusses three Ancient Greek names for ‘snail with a spiral shell’: (1) σέσῑλος, (2) σέσηλος and (3) σέσελις (gen. sg. It is suggested that the first name σέσῑλος is of Ionic origin (with the regular representation of the diphthong ει as ῑ), the second one σέσηλος belongs to the Doric heritage (see the Laconian gloss in Hesychius’ lexicon: σέσηλοι· κοχλίαι. Λάκωνες), and the third σέσελις represents a purely Attic form. The Proto-Greek archetype should be reconstructed as *σέσελϝος (m.) ‘snail’. In fact, the disappearance of the glide *ϝ in the Ancient Greek dialects causes the lengthening of the original vowel *ε to ει (later ῑ) in Ionic, to η in Doric. Only the Attic dialect preserves the short vowel ε with no change, see e.g. Ionic ξεῖνος, Doric ξῆνος, Attic ξένος (m.) ‘guest-friend; guest; stranger, foreigner, refugee’ < Proto-Greek *ξένϝος, see Myc. Gk. ke-se-nu-wo [ksenwos], Aeolic ξέννος, Corcyrean πρόξενϝος (m.) ‘public guest, deputy’. The archetype *σέσελϝος was created as a reduplicated form of the Indo-European verbal root *tsel- ‘to creep, crawl’, cf. Old Indic (Vedic) tsáru- m. (u-stem) ‘a crawling animal’ (< IE. *tsélus m. ‘snail’). A related term with no reduplication is attested in the Hesychian glossary (σ-374): σελάτης· κοχλίας, as well as in the Celtic languages, e.g. [1] MIr. selide ‘snail’, Mod. Ir. seilide, seilchide, seilmide, slimide ‘id.’ (< Celtic *selantī- < IE. *tsel-n̥t-ī); [2] OIr. selige m. (gl. testudo) ‘tortoise’, MIr. seilche ‘tortoise; snail’, Scottish Gaelic seilcheag ‘snail’ (< Celtic *selaki̯ās < IE. *tselə2ki̯ās).

Opis:
The identification of Aeneas Tacticus has always been a matter of dispute. Most often he is supposed to have been a mercenary officer, probably from Stymphalus, to whom Xenophon makes reference in Hellenica, 7.3.1. Accordingly, one may find the views that in Aeneas’ treatise a mercenary perspective is adopted, a claim also supported by the observation that the author records the phenomenon of the ubiquitous popularity of paid soldiers in the Greek warfare system of the fourth century BC. In this paper it is argued that Aeneas’ outlook in fact had little in common with mercenary ethics; instead, it is the writer’s deep commitment to civic values (explicitly stated in the Preface) that is stressed. Especially worth pointing out remains Aeneas’ belief that during siege civic patriotism still matters. It is a value on which success in overwhelming the invaders depends: all the steps and preventive actions of the city’s dwellers leading to a successful defense of a native polis must be rooted – according to him – in the conviction that polis in its material (territory, estates, shrines, temples, walls) and spiritual dimension (religion, gods, respect for the parents) constitutes the best framework for life. By the same token, a relatively high importance is given by Aeneas to hoplite troops, usually consisting of yeomen and farmers who were the owners of land. In the author’s conviction they could provide the best possible protection to a polis. Looking from a purely military point of view, hoplite forces – together with auxiliary troops (the light-armed and cavalry, if possible) – were also useful at the time when the enemy entered the city’s territory and ravaged it before attempting a direct assault on the walls.

Opis:
This article examines the concept of Byzantinism that Julien Benda employed in his book La France Byzantine. In the fin-de-siècle European sensibility, Byzantinism was transferred from political to literary level, but Benda created an epistemological break when he asserted in his book that Byzantinism is literature in its normal function. Furthermore, of Byzantinist character is especially the modern literature (e.g. Valéry or Mallarmé). Thus, labeling modern literati as Byzantinist writers served as a critical tool for Benda, who condemned the degradation of modern intellectuals into clerks. This transformation of literary normality affected also pure thought as is manifested in the ambiguous manner of expressing their ideas by modern thinkers (this being a mixture of idealism and apocryphal thinking, which renders ideas rather abstractions than instruments of rationality). An example of such a Byzantinist use can be found in the manner Emmanuel Levinas exploited Husserl’s phenomenology. Finally, Benda engaged in a discussion with Paulhan’s view that literary philosophy is a form of critical terror. The position of Benda is that of a rationalist, whereas Paulhan is a thinker who focuses on the use of language. For Constantine Tsatsos (1899–1987), on the other hand, a Greek philosopher and author of a philosophical novel entitled Dialogues in a Monastery (1974), the Byzantine moment is a part of great continuity of Greek culture, which is characterized by various structures in its period of long duration. One of these is the synthesis of Hellenism and Christianity that can be seen in Byzantium, where the transposition of the philosophical (Platonic) Eros to the mystical one plays a major role. This development is of paramount importance not only for the whole European culture but also for all questions of beauty and morality. The present paper concludes with a brief discussion of Richard Rorty’s account of pragmatic reason, which makes it possible to show how contemporary philosophy can be placed in the context of the debate about Byzantinism.

Opis:
Ekphrasis is one of the forms that the Greek tragic dramatists used in their plays. From a dramaturgical point of view it was a very important element of play strictly connected with the conventions of the ancient theater. The examples taken from the Euripidean tragedy will be used to demonstrate the ways the ancient Greek tragedians applied ekphrasis in their works. Their review will start with descriptions, which can be conventionally called the ekphrasis of the theatrical “mask”. The term mask is understood here not sensu stricto as a part of actor’s costume, but as having a reference to what it hides. This type of ekphrasis may be found in visually inaccessible to the public of the Greek theater face of dramatis personae that is hidden behind the mask. It concealed facial expressions, so important to understand the action of the drama itself, as well as the role played by the actor. It is impossible to overestimate the importance of this dramaturgical element as a non-verbal means of communication which harmonizes with the text of play and its action and is crucial to perceive the intended meaning of the actors’ words.

The article focuses on an analysis of the semantic character of the Greek adverb εὖ and its prefix role in the morphological formations of selected lexical units present in the texts of the New Testament. The author begins by addressing the possibility of creating lexical units using the selected prefix, listing the lexemes with the highest degree of productivity appearing in the chosen corpus. The units selected in this way are then analysed in terms of their functioning in Greek New Testament texts, with or without the prefix εὖ. The analysis makes it possible to indicate the semantic contribution that the studied prefix makes to the newly created linguistic formations. The work also focuses on a comparative analysis of the translations adopted in French biblical studies and suggests a deeper understanding of them based on the results of the proposed description.

The paper investigates the problems related to futurity and modality in modern Greek. The discussion of Greek temporal future expressions is conducted with reference to relevant literature from the areas of English linguistics, cognitive studies and pragmatics. The focus is on the status of future-oriented expressions and the question whether they are primarily epistemic in nature, whether they are tense-based, or modality-based. It is argued that the future tense in Greek has a modal semantic base conveying epistemic modality and that the preferred future prospective reading is a pragmatic development of the semantic modal base. The author further suggests that the future reading is a kind of presumptive meaning which follows from the neo-Gricean Principle of Informativeness, known as the I-principle (Levinson 2000) being a generalised interpretation which does not depend on contextual information.

The present article centres on the questions of why Euripides introduced the ghost of Polydorus on stage and what his spectre has in common with the dream related by Hecuba just after the prologue. It is argued that, by introducing the ghost scene, Euripides creates a link between his play and Sophocles' Polyxena.

The article contains an analysis of the preserved fragments of Hecataeus of Abdera's work 'On the Hyperboreans' and a Polish translation of the most important ones. It seems that Hecataeus did not intend to depict an ideal of the pious and virtuous life in order to edify the reader. 'On the Hyperboreans' was not a utopia in the strict sense of the term. It was meant to be an entertaining novel describing a journey to a miraculous country. The writer probably did not imitate Pytheas of Massilia's work 'On the Ocean'. One should reject the hypothesis that Hecataeus' Hyperboreans were modeled on the Egyptians.

An analysis of the way in which the terms pertaining to the Principate are used in books XLIV-LVI of Cassius Dio’s work, and especially in book LII, containing the debate between Agrippa and Maecenas on the future constitution of Rome, leads to the conclusion that the scholars who claim that Cassius Dio describes the Principate from the Greek political perspective are wrong: though he uses Greek terms, they are substitutes for Latin ones, used in Roman political life of the period.

Opis:
Study on the concept of mneme – “memory” in the plays of Euripides is a continuation of our research (based on the works of Greek tragedians), whose aim is not only to establish meanings, especially new ones, but also to define the role that this concept plays in the works of Euripides. Linguistic and literary analysis of 8 instances of a noun mneme shows that this concept reveals hitherto unknown semantic values and it also performs functions that are important for the plot. Among the meanings of mneme there are five new ones: (1) “testimony, proof” (Suppliant Women), whose role is a ‘media’ message to guarantee the preservation of memory about Theseus’ feats among descendants, (2) “account, balance” (Heracles), rational argument, which the hero must use in a critical situation caused by divine power, (3) specific “history”, which creates the plot (Ion), (4) “reason, rightness” (Iphigenia at Aulis), i.e. evidence of predominance of the woman over the man (in terms of character), (5) “image”, twice in this sense (Iphigenia at Aulis): 1. as a panorama, vivid memory of panegyric and cognitive nature (Greek expedition), 2. as scenes from Iphigenia’s childhood cited in order to change the decision of Agamemnon. In addition to the new ones, Euripides also uses known meanings: mneme with negation, i.e. the lack of “mentions, memories” (= concealment) becomes an important element of the plot of Helen, guaranteeing its happy ending; in turn mneme as Kreon’s “thought” is a tool for mastering feelings and influencing the development of stage events. All meanings defined by Euripides can be divided into two groups. The first group includes meanings that have rational value: (1) “account, balance”, (2) “thought”, (3) “reason, rightness”. In the other group there are expressive meanings: (1) “testimony, proof”, (2) “mention, memory”, (3) “history”, (4) “image”. Undoubtedly, Euripides not only broadened the semantic scope of the concept of mneme, introducing its new values, but creatively used them in his plays, whether to describe the main characters, or as an element influencing the action, or finally as a testimony of the past that is important for the plot.

Opis:
During the interrogation of Jesus before the tribunal of Pilate a question is posed: “What is truth?” (Gospel of John). The author makes it a canvas of the article and on this basis in the first part he wants to present similarities and differences in perception of truth in Jewish and Greco-Roman tradition. He starts from the meaning of the Hebrew term ’emet and analyses its use in the Old Testamental environment as well as in the intertestamental period (Qumran, Philo of Alexandria). The term ’emet is much more capacious than its Polish equivalent and it means the truth as well as faithfulness, reliability, stability. In the OT writings it plays an important role in relation to God and His word as well as God’s deeds (eg. the Law, the Covenant), and together with the word hesed it constitutes a characteristic hendiadys. The Jews, however, knew also use of the term ’emet similar to the contemporary (compliance of a spoken judgment with reality; in this way it was used in everyday speech and the judiciary). In later texts it appears in the sense of knowledge hidden from the profanes, having its source in heaven and passed by messengers-angels to sages and prophets. Those in turn were to instruct worthy people, who in this way are acquainted with God’s plans. In the Greek culture, at least from the times of Parmenides, the truth (alētheia) was identified with being. Some philosophers identified pre-being with Deity (Xenophanes) or the Rule/Rules of the world (archē/archai). This concept was professed, among others, by Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, although each one of them within specifically conceived metaphysics. The objective nature of truth was negated by sophists, followed by agnostics. In other philosophical schools alētheia was conceived in close relation to ethics. However, depending on the schools and even on the period of their development, certain changes occurred, as in the case of intermediate and younger Academy (moderate skepticism and probabilism). In Rome, where the stoic mainstream and eclecticism (Cicero) dominated, awareness of the variety of definitions of truth led to the attitude of keeping distance to any certainties. Philosophising Romans, especially the skeptics and eclectics, referred to the principle of probability and common sense.

Lemko inhabit the borderland between Ukraine, Slovakia, and Poland. Since ancient times they have been associated with the Eastern Rite Christianity (Orthodox). In the 16th and 17th centuries, they became Uniates (Greek Catholics). In the 19th and 20th century some of Lemko people passed to the Orthodox faith. Most, however, remained loyal to the Greek Catholic Church. Today, the Greek Catholic Lemkos usually think of themselves as members of the Ukrainian people. Orthodox Lemkos usually think of themselves as a separate nation.

Opis:
Niniejszy artykuł omawia wybrane aspekty terminologii dotyczącej gniewu w Biblii Greckiej. Septuaginta używa zasadniczo dwóch terminów określających gniew: θυμός i ὀργή (bardzo rzadko innych).
The article discusses selected aspects of “anger” terminology in the Greek Bible. The Septuagint basically uses two terms to express anger, θυμός and ὀργή, and rarely any others. The two words are used in the LXX interchangeably, it seems to express both the wrath of God and the wrath of people and animals. The article discusses both of these key terms, along with their etymology and occurrence within classical Greek literature, recognizing that the terminology of the LXX is based both upon those classical texts – which often refer to the theme of “anger”, starting with the oldest known Greek texts – as well as on the Jewish tradition, incorporating many so-called “Hebraisms” and expressions characteristic of the Hebrew Bible. In addition, the article shows that the LXX terminology regarding anger also had an influence on the New Testament, on both a terminological and conceptual level.

As Amartya Sen has rightly noticed (Sen 2005: 182), one of Buddhist main principles was attaching special importance to discussions and dialogue. This argumentative tradition, which is traceable in Buddhism from the very beginning, for example in the texts of the Sutta Piṭaka or the so-called “Buddhist councils,” especially the third of them in the time of Aśoka, who in his edicts advocated respect for dissenting views, finds its exemplification in the Milindapañha — a Pāli Buddhist text, missing original version of which was probably written in Gāndhārī. The analysis of this text, taking into account a variety of possible influences in a multicultural environment of the region of its origin – Gandhāra and during its transmission, as well as the applied artistic means, will give us the opportunity to reconsider the crucial questions regarding the religious and ethnic identity of the Indo-Greek ruler and the attractiveness of Buddhism to the Greeks living in the region of Gandhāra in the second and first century BC. These questions, in a broader perspective, relate to the matters of the dialogue on its many levels: socio-political, intercultural, interpersonal and intrapersonal. Analysis of these levels enables us to notice the essence of the dialogue and its importance.

It is pointed out that the connection might be made more probable when analyzing the Latin data: the verb meiō, -ere ‘to urinate’ and its meaning in the Latin texts, which is not always restricted to ‘urinating’ but is also used as an obscene word meaning ‘to ejaculate’. We can then postulate that μοιχός was an agent noun of óμείχω in the meaning of ‘to ejaculate’ and this way as ‘adulterer’.

The aim of the study, which is a continuation of this type of research (based on Greek literary sources of the Presocratic era), is to determine the meanings of the concept of mneme – “memory” in the works of Aeschylus and Sophocles, as well as to determine the function it plays in a given place. Linguistic and literary analysis of 12 instances of a noun mneme in Aeschylus (3) and Sophocles (9) shows that this concept reveals hitherto unknown semantic shades. Aeschylus gives mneme a new meaning of “worship” (in Suppliants). He also uses the already known: intellectual “power of memory” and for the first time in the history of Greek literature identifies “memory” with the mother of all muses – Mnemosyne (in Prometheus Bound). More often mneme appears in the works of Sophocles, which results from the functions performed there. After all, the intellectual “power of memory” and “memories” as the effects of its actions allow the characters to: (1) do well (and thus keep the moral order), (2) get to know the truth about ourselves (to recognize our own identity) changing the course of dramatic action as part of the peripeteia (the case of Oedipus), (3) lead (as the driving force) to destruction of heroes (Jocasta, Oedipus), (4) drive the action (as “thought”), (5) serve as a moral compass (in a new semantic shade “attention”, in Oedipus at Colonuss), (6) store a resource (memories) as a deposit in collective memory as a warning for posterity. And finally, for the first time in history, the concept of mneme as a tool of mimesis is used in Oedipus Rex in the new sense: “the ability to (re)create” (inspired by Mnemosyne) or otherwise: “poetic art of reconstruction” of dramatic events. Defined meanings (semantic shades) of mneme can be divided into 2 groups. The first group includes those that take rational value: “power / ability to remember”, “thought”, “attention”), while the other holds the expressive meanings: “worship, honour, commemoration”, “(re)creative, poetic reconstruction”. It seems that the Greek tragedians were aware of the role that mneme can play in their works: whether in the depiction of the characters, or as an element that drives the action, or in recalling, in various ways, the past and its cultivation.

Opis:
This paper is a review of the book: Michel Onfray, Sagesse: Savoir vivre au pied d’un volcan (Paris: Albin Michel, 2019). The author highlights that: (1) by arguing that Roman philosophy surpasses Greek thought on account of its practicality, Onfray sees Roman masculine virtue as part of a solution to the postmodern, post-Christian condition; (2) Onfray’s book provides Christians with understanding why many are tuning out to the Christian message even while feeling dissatisfied with the modern post-Christian world.

Opis:
The article focuses on the social integration of Polish adolescents residing in Athens and attempts to detect factors which influence this process. Data was gathered from two qualitative research projects - case studies - on social and school integration of young Polish citizens attending Polish and Greek high schools in Athens (2010), and on a Polish migrant family and its educational and migration strategies (2012). A qualitative perspective, utilizing semi-structured, in-depth interviews, was chosen in both studies. The paper begins with a short description of the migratory experiences of Greece and Poland, including a brief history of Polish immigration in Greece. It continues with a discussion about social integration and refers to the specific case of integration of migrant adolescents. Then it proceeds to the results of the two studies mentioned above, which indicate that the degree of social integration of Polish adolescents is variable and depends on the school that the young people attend, the extra-curricular activities they participate in, their Greek language competency, their social networks within the Greek population, and their parents’ socio-economic status. Important differences in the social integration between the groups of pupils from Greek and Polish high schools were observed.

Opis:
The article focuses on female deities and demons appearing in ancient Greek tragedy. At the beginning the classification of female deities and demons is made followed by description of its two categories. The first category consists of deus ex machina characters exemplified by Athena from Iphigenia in Tauris by Euripides. The second is depicted in the image of Erynies that appear both in the action (Aeschylus’ Eumenides) and in commentaries (Euripides’ Iphigenia in Tauris).

Opis:
In 2007, a Polish-Ukrainian expedition operating within the framework of the Koshary Project conducted the tenth season of excavations on the complex of sites in Koshary. Within the trenches III and VII exploration of layers and features (mainly storage pits) discovered in 2006 was continued. Field works conducted in this part of the site allowed to reveal the eastern border of the fortified town. Outside it the remains of “suburb” are located, which were the subject of investigations during the campaigns 2003-2005. Trench VIII provided some new informations. Relics of town’s fortifications were uncovered here in the form of stone wall and ditch. The wall itself had not been preserved, but its trace, left after the dismantling of presumably regular blocks cut from limestone. The ditch laid at a distance of 10 m away from the face of the wall and might have served as a moat. Both the wall and ditch ran in the southeasterly direction, toward the edge of the liman. Future explorations should determine the extent of destruction suffered by the eastern part of the settlement due to the collapse of the promontory edge in this area. As a result of investigations made up to 2007 (both archaeological excavations and geophysical prospection), it may be assumed that the main part of the “town”, encompassing the architectural relics uncovered in trenches III, IV (explored in 1998–2002) and VII was situated in the northeastern part of the promontory, on naturally elevated ground. It was walled off from the northwest, west and south by a defence wall with a system of ditches. This then would have been the fortified town, the space inside the walls packed with houses built of stone and dried brick. The evidence now favours the existence of an open settlement outside the fortified enclosure – a “suburb”, comprising scattered, isolated homesteads, such as Farm 1 discovered in trench VI (2003-2005).

This article on Varoufakis’s book, Adults in The Room: My Battle with Europe’s Deep Establishment (2017) and about what happened in Greece in 2015 is a guide for left-leaning readers who are not happy with the dominant narrative meted out by the mainstream media and the Troika-controlled governments. These readers are also dissatisfied with the former Greek Finance Minister’s version. As a counterpoint to Varoufakis’s story, I have highlighted events that he is silent about, and I have expressed different views on what he should have done and what he did instead. My story runs parallel, and not opposite, to his. It is crucial to thoroughly analyse the policy implemented by the Varoufakis-Tsipras government because, for the first time in the 21st century, a radical left-wing government was elected in Europe. If we want to avoid another disaster, it is absolutely vital to identify the flaws and understand what went wrong. This critique of the Greek government’s policy in 2015 is not primarily meant to point out the respective responsibilities of Tsipras or Varoufakis as individuals. It is imperative to analyse the politico-economic orientation that was followed, so that we can ascertain the causes of failure, understand what could have been tried instead, and learn what a radical left-wing government can do in a country in the periphery of the Eurozone.

In his work Περὶ ζῴων ἰδιότητος (De natura animalium X 44) Claudius Aelian describes cicadas’ names in the following way: „There are, it seems, many species of cicada (τέττιξ), and those who are skilled in these matters enumerate them and report their names. Thus, the Ashen one (τεφράς) is so called from its colour; whence the Membrax (μέμβραξ) got its name I do not know; and Chirper (λακέτας), it appears, is the name for a cicada; and I have heard tell of the Long-tail (κερκώπη) and the Shriller (ἀχέτας) and the Prickly one (ἀκάνθιος). Well, these are all the kinds of Cicada of which I remember having heard the names, but if anyone has got to know more than those that I have mentioned, he must tell them” (translated by Scholfield 1959: 339–341). It is necessary to follow Aelian’s suggestion and explain all the mentioned cicadas’ names from the point of view of the Greek etymology and word-formation.

In his work entitled On the Characteristics of Animals (VII 47), Claudius Aelianus discusses numerous Ancient Greek names of wild animals, especially their young. He registers as many as 18 different appellatives referring to young animals as well as ten poetic or dialectal terms for mature ones. The aim of the present study is to analyze the Ancient Greek words denoting young animals quoted by the Roman writer from the viewpoint of etymology and word-formation.
