Opis:
For many women situated in post-socialist countries, the end of communism entailed the loss of state protection and social security. This often resulted in migration, underpinned by the hope for a better future and facilitated by trust in social networks. Trust and hope are often highlighted in the social-science literature as being indispensable means for navigating migration. What this perspective lacks, however, is an eye for the detrimental effects of the work of hope and for the beneficial effects of the work of distrust. For it can be hope that relates a subject to its exploiter and/or exploitative circumstances and it can be distrust that provides an escape route and increases agency. This article considers the illusive dimension of hope and the mobilising effect of distrust by referring to the experiences of Georgian migrant women in Thessaloniki (Greece). It shows how hope occasionally emanates out of distrust and how the combination of the two allows for new perspectives of action.

Opis:
The article points out a few selected threads of interest related to Karol Wojtyła’s – Pope John Paul II’s – relationship with the ancient world, with the focus on the Biblical lands. Some of his statements on this subject are discussed. Above all, the focus is on John Paul II’s pilgrimages in 2000 and 2001. These two endeavors were connected with the Jubilee Year, in which the Pope visited, among other countries, Egypt, Syria, Jordan and Greece, referring to the ancient history of these locations.
Miało to związek z Rokiem Jubileuszowym; papież odwiedził wówczas m.in. Egipt, Syrię, Jordanię i Grecję, nawiązując do antycznych dziejów tych miejsc.

The article offers insights on the reception and cultural transmission of one of the most important Renaissance texts entitled De Europa written by Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini, an Italian scholar (he became Pope Pius II in 1458). His work was adopted and adapted by the Polish scholar Jan of Stobnica. In his dissertation Introductio in Ptolemaei cosmographiam cum longitudinibus et latitudinibus regionum et civitatum celebriorum, he took up all issues of Piccolomini`s treatise, including geographical and historical aspects of Greece. His attitude to this material was very positive. The article considers the motifs of Greek districts, such as Macedonia, Thessaly, Boeotia, Attica, the Peloponnese, the Isthmus, Achaea, Acarnania, Epirus, and the significance of Greece for Polish Renaissance culture.

Opis:
It is a widespread opinion that modern jurisprudence was shaped first of all by the tradition of Roman law. In this article author tries to explain why ancient Greek legal thought should be equally important. As an example he considers the evolution and the different meanings of the concept of nomos. Four issues are presented in this paper. First, nomos in the political philosophy of Carl Schmitt and Giorgio Agamben. Secondly, nomos in one of Pindar’s poems. Thirdly, the distinction between physis and nomos made by the sophists. Fourthly, thesmos, nomos and psephisma in the legislative practice of Athenian ekklesia.

Colossus of Rhodes
problems of location and construction technique
Opis:
Colossus of Rhodes: Where It Stood and How It Was Made The author, just as Ursula Vedder, who has expressed the same opinion recently, has been long sure that the place where the Colossus of Rhodes was located was the acropolis of the town of Rhodes. The paper includes also some arguments that have not been presented by the German scholar. At first, some source information concerning the Colossus has been briefly summarized. For instance, the expression in APV, 171 (Overbeck 1543), ou gar hyper pelagos monon anthesan alla kai en ga, may be understood as confirming its location in the acropolis: “it stood not only close to the sea, but also on the earth.” In fact, there it would have loomed over the land and the sea, and, as big as it was, it could be seen from a distance. The text by Philo of Byzantium is not credible, as it was written quite late. Then the problem has been analyzed critically. As regards the legend of Colossus bestriding the entrance to the harbor, one may add to the already listed counterarguments that for static reasons a piece of sculpture shaped that way would have needed a third footing attached to the sea bottom at the harbor entrance, which would have made the ships’ access to the harbor difficult. Besides, such a pose of a god would have seemed a little indecent. A hypothesis that situates the Colossus at the end of a pier in the Mandraki Bay, preferred by many scholars, also has its weak points. Placed there, the construction site would have been too small, particularly that construction took at least twelve years, and it would have been difficult to move building materials along the narrow and long pier which under such circumstances could not be used as part of the harbor. According to Strabo (XIV, 2, 5) the harbor was accessible only to authorized personnel. Was it then a good location for a work of art intended to glorify the people of Rhodes? Even if the Colossus had been accessible there, it would have been visible only in a shortened perspective, in frog’s eye view. Still, the most important was the problem of proper display of the statue. Placed on the pier, it would have to turn its back either to the town, or to the sea, and in both cases connotations would have been unwelcome. Such details were essential for ancient Greeks. For static and constructional reasons, one must also reject a hypothesis that the Colossus put his palm over the eyes, as if examining the horizon. If it is true that the relics of the statue remained for several hundred years intact, they would have blocked access to the harbor since most probably they would have fallen into the sea. Besides, would the iron elements have resisted corrosion well enough to be recognizable? Placed on the pier, the Colossus would have been invisible to the crews of ships approaching the town from the west and the same would have been true had it been situated at the present location of the palace of the Great Masters of the Knights Hospitaller. The placement of the statue in the sanctuary of Helios at the present corner of Sofouli and Khimaras streets is also improbable, since the area is really small and the Colossus would not have made a prominent component of the town skyline. Hence, the acropolis must have been the most convenient place, just as in other Greek towns, particularly in Athens where it was the site of the city patron’s worship. Some scholars argue that the temple in the acropolis was dedicated to Apollo, but when the Colossus was constructed Apollo was commonly identified with Helios who was the most important patron of the island. The statue, with his face turned to the east – the town and the sea – might have stood near that temple (ill. 1-2), towering over it. From the west, the steep rock of the acropolis practically made it impossible to watch the Colossus from the western shore, while from the sea it was visible only as a silhouette, an orientation point for the approaching ships (ill. 3), particularly if it was gilded like the statue of Athena Promachos in Athens. This can actually be the origin of the legend that the Colossus of Rhodes was also a lighthouse. Situated in the acropolis, the statue would have been visible both from the town and the sea on both sides of the island. If the damaged Colossus remained intact for centuries, it was because removing it from the acropolis was much more difficult than removing from the wharf. The noun “colossus” originally meant “something towering” (cf. Colossae and Colophon, towns upon hills). The other part of the paper focuses on the technology of construction. Some scholars were too eager to draw from Philo’s description conclusions about the Colossus’ structure and the building methods applied. If the statue had stood at the end of the pier, most likely it would not have been hilled up since the area was too small. Due to the pressure of dirt, boarding such an embankment (A. Gabriel’s claim) would have required 40-45 meter long struts for which there was no room. Moreover, with each subsequent raising of the embankment the struts would have to be multiplied and made much longer, which would have been both costly and technologically challenging. With each new layer of dirt, founding furnaces would have to be removed (as, according to Gabriel, they were located on the embankment) and then put back. A high embankment would have required the use of gigantic ladders, unstable and dangerous. What is more, it would have made it impossible to control the form of the work in progress. All that would have been irrational, while ancient Greeks do not really deserve such a charge. In the author’s opinion, the Colossus was erected within a wooden scaffolding. Founding particular elements of the statue on site was rather unlikely. An external dirt coat would not have helped since there was no clay core inside it, which would have made the alloy’s cooling speed radically unequal. Partial casting is also unlikely as it would have required a 1:1 model (30-35 meters high). Had the model been smaller, errors in calculating detailed measurements would have been inevitable. The author believes that the Colossus of Rhodes was made of hammered bronze sheets riveted to the inner metal skeleton. Such a technique made vertical transportation easier and allowed the constructors to correct the process of montage by bending the sheets whenever necessary. It cannot be excluded that the heads of the rivets and lines of contact between the sheets were masked with solders that did not require much alloy, although in higher sections of the statue the wind would have cooled it quite rapidly. The noun “colossus” did not originally imply a gigantic size but only a slightly archaic look of the sculpture so that the Colossus of Rhodes might have been somewhat similar to very ancient and artistically primitive stiff statues of Helios. On the other hand, it might have alluded to the mythic Telchins who were the first to make statues of gods. (For static reasons, contrapposto was out of the question in the statues of that size, besides it would have been impossible to fill its interior with stones.) Another aspect of making the Colossus look archaic was the use of a modified technique of sphyrelaton. In the author’s opinion, the base of the statue and maybe its higher parts as well, up to the level of ankles, contained carefully sized and braced blocks of stone. They were drilled through to hold the lower ends of the metal internal skeleton made according to the schema of a spatial grid, perhaps used on that occasion for the first time in history. Such a fixture protected the Colossus from the wind pressure so effectively that it remained standing for dozens of years, being vulnerable to earthquakes. The fallen Colossus must have looked like a debris of rods and tin, while the stones from the fixture could be seen in the “abyss” (Plinius), below the level of the ankles, where the structure was actually bent (it must have been bent there rather than at the level of the knees, since looking inside the ruin was easy: the ankles were situated about two meters above the base.) The third footing point might have been camouflaged with some attribute (a spear or a torch). It cannot be excluded that originally Chares had been planning a statue half the final size, similar to the previously known colossal pieces of sculpture, but the pride of the people of Rhodes, emulating Athenians, made them want a Colossus twice as big (Sextus Empiricus, pros mathem., VII, 107 n.). Making the statue look archaic and using an old technology plus some innovations allowed Chares to make their extravagant wish come true. The archaic look might have been achieved thanks to a reference to some old statue of Helios, which perhaps could be found in the neighboring temple. The torso might have been topped with the head, cast separately, although the trouble with placing it so high makes one doubt it.

W artykule pokazano okoliczności i konsekwencje wprowadzenia takich regulacji w świetle wypowiedzi doktryny i judykatury. Przedstawione zostały najważniejsze argumenty zwolenników i przeciwników uznawania poziomej skuteczności konstytucyjnych praw i wolności.
The acceptance of the general formula of the horizontal effect of constitutional rights and freedoms in the form of appropriate regulation at the constitutional level is original solution present in few countries, for example in Republic of South Africa and Greece. The article shows the background and the consequences of the introduction of these regulations in the light of statements of legal doctrine and judicature. It is also noticed on an example of Federal Republic of Germany, that the lack of distinct regulation is not a hindrance to practical recognition of the horizontality of particular rights and freedoms in jurisprudence. In the article are presented crucial arguments of followers and oponents of horizontal effect of constitutional rights and freedoms. Research done for the article lead to the general conclusion that the legal doctrine in the world is ready to accept in principle only indirect third party effect of constitutional rigts via the general provisions of private law.

Opis:
The article presents problems connected with forming democracy in Poland after 1989. In order to comprehend the Polish democracy and to answer the question ‘Where are you heading, democracy?’, the author indicates the model of democratic system in ancient Greece and points to the phenomenon of explosion of democratic systems in the world. Also studies of the state of knowledge of democracy are presented. They show that there is a discrepancy between the degree of satisfaction with the practical performance of democratic countries and the faith in the ideals of democracy. A special attention is devoted to the distance that separates the Polish democracy from mature Western democracies. By analyzing the literature and emphasizing the gaps in the mechanism of democracy it is shown that Poland meets the minimum standards of the democratic system. The author suggests the direction of transformation that should be followed in order to make Poland a democratic country.

Southern Italy's ecclesiastic self-reliance as well as its constancy in following Orthodox canons fostered a large inflow of priests and monks from the Byzantine Empire. Greek monks fleeing Arab invasion and iconoclasm into the Apennine Peninsula played a significant role in spreading Byzantine ideas, liturgical tradition and language. The so-called “historical mission” of Greek monasticism in Southern Italy, which influenced clergy and church hierarchy too, had been fulfilled in the time of its fullest bloom: in the 9th, 10th and 11th centuries. Monasteries created in that period, standing out in terms of theological, philosophical and literary thought, were safe harbours for the traditions of Hellenic humanism and sciences. The greatest development was that of Italo-Byzantine hymnography, manifested by the output of Greek Fathers (monks). Lives and works of these Italo-Greek saints emphasise that historical mission of Byzantine element in Italy, which-regardless of the then-progressing fall-became a link with the Middle East. While the Byzantine Empire had remained to that point in a state of endless war with Muslims, who spared the empire-by not causing serious damage in the political sense-only in Italian provinces, Normans did have brought radical political changes. It was that factor which contributed to obliteration of Greek monasticism in the South of Italy.

The global financial crisis and the euro area crisis and their implications, triggered populism and demagogy, which have fed on people’s ignorance, confusion and despair. As no common EU-level response to the refugee and migration crises was negotiated promptly, over the period 2015-2016 the EU-level debate on migration created a new opportunity for domestic political actors to employ migration as a resource of political competition at home. Paradoxically, in Greece, i.e.  a country so profoundly exposed to the unprecedented influx of migrants, migration has not been used as a resource of political competition. This paper identifies and examines factors that have contributed to that.

Opis:
This paper aims at recognising potential innovations in weaving technology that may have occurred in Bronze Age Greece. It discusses whether these assumed developments may be examined diachronically. This discussion is based on archaeological evidence of textile implements, such as loom weights and presumed traces of warp-weighted looms, as well as knowledge of traditional craft and experimental archaeology. After a short introduction discussing how technical innovations could possibly be recognised in weaving, the paper explores possible changes in the construction and functionality of the warp-weighted loom and potential uses of other types of looms in Greece. A distribution pattern of specific forms of a loom weight, e.g. discoid loom weights in particular, is examined as an innovation responding to the demand for fabrics of specific technical qualities and appearance, possibly associated with a spread of new weaving techniques which accompanied the transmission of these tools. Social relations and modes of organisation of textile production are considered factors that must have had a significant impact on creativity and innovativeness in weaving technology. However, the final conclusion is that specific relations between the organisation of weaving and the occurrence of innovative processes cannot be clearly recognised based on the available evidence.

Totally 50 samples of groundwater and soil were collected from the area of Akrefnio (central Greece), in order to assess the geochemical status and the risk for humans and natural environment. The analytical results and processing of the initial data revealed that the main factors controlling hydrogeochemistry are the natural enrichment from calcareous substrate and the manmade pollution through extensive use of N-fertilizers. Soil geochemistry was mainly influenced by the occurrence of lateritic horizons, which gave raise to elevated concentrations of Ni and Cr in the majority of soil samples. Although most of the geochemical enrichment processes between soil and groundwater are common, the above geochemical systems don't seem to interact, and act most of the times independently. Risk assessment of natural and mankind environment revealed that groundwater is suitable for drinking but not for irrigation, due to high salinity. Finally, soils are highly polluted by Ni and Cr, and thus are inappropriate for the existing agricultural land uses.
Pobrano 50 próbek gleby i wody gruntowej z obszaru Akrefnio (środkowa Grecja) do oceny stanu geochemicznego i zagrożeń ludzi i środowiska naturalnego.

Opis:
Purpose – The main purpose of this study is twofold: (1) to measure and compare the entrepreneurial intention of business students attending the first and the fourth year of Business studies in a Greek university in order to determine the impact of curriculum and (2) to explore the role of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) in explaining students’ entrepreneurial intention.Design/methodology/approach – A questionnaire was distributed to a sample of 186 students attending the 1st (108) and the 4th (78) year of studies at Business Management. Besides descriptive statistics, T-test, correlations, and multiple linear regressions were estimated to test hypotheses.Findings – The three components of the Theory of Planned Behavior seem to play a differentiated role in the formation of the entrepreneurship intentions of business student, with subjective norms proved to be insignificant in the process of intention formation. Furthermore, the role of entrepreneurial curriculum and content was insignificant in influencing the rather weak intentions of business students to pursue a self-employed career. Fourth year students after attending a number of business, related courses were found to report on average less strong entrepreneurship intentions compared to the first year students. Originality/value – This study represents a first systematic quantitative effort to measure and compare the entrepreneurship intentions of the first and fourth year students of a Greek university and explore the effect of the components of TPB.

Opis:
The preservation status of the mollusc shell accumulation of sandy barriers at the Amvrakikos Gulf lagoon complex was studied. Taphonomic shell analysis of dead mollusc depositions was undertaken in the summer of 2016 at Amvrakikos lagoon complex within the Tsoukalio and Logarou sandy barriers, which showed significant differences among the major abundant bivalve species of Cerastoderma glaucum and Polititapes aureus. Both hydrodynamic transport and differential exposure to environmental conditions differ among the accumulated shells depositions of the lagoonal sandy barriers. The heavier and more durable shells of C. glaucum are frequently found concentrated at the Tsoukalio lagoon accumulations and show a higher intensity of fragmentation whereas at Logarou lagoon the bioerosion and abrasion is more intense. On the other hand, the lighter, thinner, and thus more fragile shells of P. aureus show higher concentration and intensity of fragmentation and bioerosion at Logarou lagoon sandy barriers. The continuous deposition of shells at Tsoukalio lagoonal sandy barriers, contrary to the longterm deposition at Logarou lagoon, explains the different types of accumulations among the lagoons which are attributed to the geomorphology of the sandy shores as well as the morphological characteristics of the different shells.

Opis:
Intensive exploration of probable conventional hydrocarbon reservoirs in Greece is taking place, through the interpretation of seismic profiles and of abundant surface geological data. The unconventional hydrocarbon potential of the country is unknown, as detailed investigations are lacking. The most important rock formations which may contain shale gas are found in the land and offshore basins of northeastern, north-central, and western Greece. A re-evaluation of the data from all boreholes is needed, on the basis of new information, with the aim of identifying possible reserves of unconventional hydrocarbons retained in highly compacted fine-grained strata. Methane hydrates have been detected in the submarine Anaximander Mountains, east of Rhodes Island. They cover an area of about 46 km2 and the volume of methane is estimated at 2.6–6.4 trillion m3. The low content of the Greek lignites in gaseous hydrocarbons and the widespread tectonics in the Hellenic Peninsula are the main factors which prevented large gas accumulations in its 14 main coal deposits. However, additional research is needed to evaluate the coal-bed gas potential of the country.

Opis:
This article on Varoufakis’s book, Adults in The Room: My Battle with Europe’s Deep Establishment (2017) and about what happened in Greece in 2015 is a guide for left-leaning readers who are not happy with the dominant narrative meted out by the mainstream media and the Troika-controlled governments. These readers are also dissatisfied with the former Greek Finance Minister’s version. As a counterpoint to Varoufakis’s story, I have highlighted events that he is silent about, and I have expressed different views on what he should have done and what he did instead. My story runs parallel, and not opposite, to his. It is crucial to thoroughly analyse the policy implemented by the Varoufakis-Tsipras government because, for the first time in the 21st century, a radical left-wing government was elected in Europe. If we want to avoid another disaster, it is absolutely vital to identify the flaws and understand what went wrong. This critique of the Greek government’s policy in 2015 is not primarily meant to point out the respective responsibilities of Tsipras or Varoufakis as individuals. It is imperative to analyse the politico-economic orientation that was followed, so that we can ascertain the causes of failure, understand what could have been tried instead, and learn what a radical left-wing government can do in a country in the periphery of the Eurozone.
