In 1802, Leopold von Buch described some outcrops of orbicular granite in the Karkonosze granite, Lower Silesia, Poland. In that publication, Abraham Gottlieb Werner wrote a foreword dated 1800. The Silesian discovery predates that of the well-known orbicular diorite (Napoleonite) in outcrop on Corsica and, thus, may be the first ever record of this distinctive rock type in its geological context. The characterizing, closely-packed, simple orbs comprise K-feldspar cores surrounded by rims of radiating K-feldspar and quartz. Rapid growth from a hydrous, pegmatitic melt is indicated. The Karkonosze outcrop, in the timing of its discovery, is a unique part of the geological heritage.

Granites of the South Bohemian Pluton are among the main rocks in the region of Waldviertel in the northern part of Lower Austria. The overall topography is gently rolling, with higher elevations and medium-altitude mountainous relief present only in the south-western part. Tors are the most characteristic residual landforms and occupy different settings, from mountain tops to valley floors. They vary in shapes and dimensions, with castle koppies and boulder clusters being most common. Many tors host well-developed microforms such as weathering pits, karren, runnels, and flared slopes. Balanced rocks are among the highlights of the region. Because of good access residual granite landforms of Waldviertel are well suited to be developed as geosites and geotourist destinations, but there is clearly a deficit of explanation and interpretation. In this paper 15 representative tors are presented, tourist infrastructure is summarized, and a thematic one-day drive is proposed.
Granity plutonu południowoczeskiego należą do głównych skał występujących w regionie Waldviertel w północnej części kraju związkowego Dolna Austria. Region ten odznacza się lekko falistą rzeźbą, z większymi wysokościami i górzystym ukształtowaniem jedynie w części południowo-zachodniej. Skałki stanowią najbardziej charakterystyczny element rzeźby denudacyjnej, zajmując różną pozycję morfologiczną, od szczytów wzniesień po dna dolinne. Są zróżnicowane pod względem kształtu i wymiarów, z dominacją zamczysk skalnych i zgrupowań bloków (skałek rumowiskowych). Morfologię wielu z nich urozmaicają mikroformy, takie jak kociołki wietrzeniowe, żłobki, rynny i nisze kloszowe. Szczególnie interesującym elementem rzeźby regionu są chybotki. Dobra dostępność sprawia, że rezydualne formy granitowe regionu są odpowiednie do zagospodarowania jako geostanowiska i atrakcje geoturystyczne, choć uwagę zwraca brak szerszego zaplecza edukacyjnego i interpretacyjnego. W artykule przedstawiono 15 reprezentatywnych skałek granitowych, podsumowano zagospodarowanie turystyczne obszaru oraz zaproponowano przebieg jednodniowej tematycznej trasy samochodowej.

A long-term (2004–2021) study of the chemical composition of thermal waters in the Jelenia Góra geothermal system provided information on a wide set of components. The subject of the present study is the geochemistry of germanium (Ge), which occurs in concentrations ranging from 2.7 to 6.3 μg/L in the waters studied. Interpretation of a set of 46 chemical analyses identified relationships between germanium and other elements in thermal waters from individual intakes. In the old thermal waters of Cieplice and Karpniki of deep circulation, germanium is derived from silicates and its concentration is controlled by the solubility of Ge-bearing quartz with an average Ge content of 1.5 μg/g. The source of germanium in the deep old thermal water at Staniszów is mainly sulphides, most likely arsenopyrite, but the secondary contribution of Ge from silicates (biotites, amphiboles) should not be ignored. The mineral phase, responsible for controlling Ge activity in this water, cannot yet be identified. The shallow thermal waters at Cieplice, which are a mixture of old thermal waters and modern waters, differ from the deep waters. Germanium in shallow waters probably is derived from silicates, but owing to mixing, there are no chemical equilibrium conditions; the concentration of Ge is determined by the dynamic equilibrium of the mixed water components. The modern water of intake no. 2 (Cieplice) differs from other shallow waters and also shows similarities to the Staniszów water. The germanium in the no. 2 water probably comes mainly from ferromagnesian minerals (biotite, amphiboles), although the influence of sulphides cannot be excluded. The relationships of germanium to other elements, including the Ge/Si ratio, appear to be effective indicators of hydrogeochemical conditions. Thermal waters from the different locations show both similarities and differences in chemical composition,especially of minor and trace components. At the present, still weak stage of recognition, the Jelenia Góra geothermal system can be treated as an area of occurrence of local systems responsible for the quantity and quality of thermal waters in individual intakes.

With the purpose of providing insights into the position of the church on Sai Island among the bishoprics of Christian Nubia, the paper contextualizes archaeologically well-known Nubian cathedrals with monolithic granite columns as roof supports (Old Dongola, Faras and Qasr Ibrim), presenting them against the background of historically known bishoprics from medieval Nubia and archaeologically attested episcopal churches. Four granite columns at the locality 8-B-500 on Sai Island, identified with the site of a medieval cathedral, are compared with like roof supports from other Makurian buildings of the kind to show that the church was constructed at the beginning of the 8th century AD and modeled on the Church of Granite Columns from Old Dongola.

Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) analyses were used to characterize britholite-(Ce) of the metaluminous granite (Proterozoic) intruded into the Nubian Formation in southwestern Egypt and having a relatively high content of radioactive elements (potassium = 4.4 wt%, thorium = 52 ppm, uranium = 10 ppm). The britholite-(Ce) studied here incorporates light rare earth elements (LREE) including lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, and neodymium as well as thorium. The mineral forms as tabular crystals in a fine-grained quartz-K-feldspar-plagioclase matrix, coexisting with other accessory minerals including biotite, zircon, clinochlore, titanite, and magnetite. Primary britholite-(Ce) usually includes titanite, zircon, and magnetite and is occasionally included in biotite. The inclusion of britholite-(Ce) in biotite suggests that the two minerals crystallized approximately coevally. Petrographical and SEM-EDS data indicate breakdown of the primary magmatic britholite-(Ce) in the samples. This study constitutes the first report for a sole presence of britholite-(Ce) as LREE phase in metaluminous granite samples from Egypt.

One of the goals was to examine which stone is the easiest to process. It was a rapakivi granite. Its minerals are pink or grey after processing. The admixture found in GAC ceramics has the same color and the same size of minerals. There was another type of admixture which was not recognizable.

This study aims to determine the geology of granite and evaluate the engineering properties of the samples to make recommendations for the construction industry. The study area is situated in the Nagar Parker complex in Pakistan, which is located in the extreme south-east of the Thar District and the desert of the Sindh Province, near the Run of Kutch (24 15–35 30 N, 70 40–58 07 E), and it covers ca. 500–1,000 km2. In this region, several Quaternary deposits, subordinate and dispersed Jurassic–Tertiary sandstones and clays are overlying the Nagar Igneous Complex basement. According to international standards, there are various possible aggregate sources. However, only a few of them have been reviewed for suitability reasons. Six quarries in Nagar Parker, Pakistan, were selected for evaluation as coarse aggregate in concrete construction and civil engineering works in this research. Although the aggregates from the six quarries are specified and already widely used in the Sindh Province, there is a lack of studies on their geological properties. The results of the presented research revealed that samples from Dhedvero, Karai, Nagarparkar, Mokrio, Dinsi and Wadlai meet all of the international standard requirements for aggregates. Geotechnical, petrographic and geochemistry laboratory tests were conducted in this research and included bulk density, water absorption, specific gravity test, index of flakiness and elongation, soundness aggregate test, crushing value aggregate, impact value aggregate and abrasion value of Los Angeles. Furthermore, chemical alkali-silica reaction potential test and petrographic examination were tested. As a result, we evaluated the properties of granite, which is a crystalline igneous rock with a visibly crystalline structure and texture, made up of feldspar, i.e., potash feldspar and oligoclase. The evaluated minerals are compatible with the standards of civil engineering works and can be used as a concrete aggregate. The evaluated three types of minerals included Dhedvero simple intrusion, Nagar pink granite and grey granite.

The formation of accessory phosphates in granites reflects many chemical and physical factors, including magma composition, oxidation state, concentrations of volatiles and degree of differentiation. The geotectonic setting of granites can be judged from the distribution and character of their phosphates. Robust apatite crystallization is typical of the early magmatic crystallization of I-type granitoids, and of late magmatic stages when increased Ca activity may occur due to the release of anorthite from plagioclase. Although S-type granites also accumulate apatite in the early stages, increasing phosphorus in late differentiates is common due to their high ASI. The apatite from the S-types is enriched in Mn compared to that in I-type granites. A-type granites characteristically contain minor amounts of apatite due to low P concentrations in their magmas. Monazite is typical of S-type granites but it can also become stable in late I-type differentiates. Huttonite contents in monazite correlate roughly positively with temperature. The cheralite molecule seems to be highest in monazite from the most evolved granites enriched in B and F. Magmatic xenotime is common mainly in the S-type granites, but crystallization of secondary xenotime is not uncommon. The formation of the berlinite molecule in feldspars in peraluminous melts may suppress phosphate precipitation and lead to distributional inhomogeneities. Phosphate mobility commonly leads to the formation of phosphate veinlets in and outside granite bodies. The stability of phosphates in the superimposed, metamorphic processes is restricted. Both monazite-(Ce) and xenotime-(Y) are unstable during fluid-activated overprinting. REE accessories, especially monazite and allanite, show complex replacement patterns culminating in late allanite and epidote formation.

Praca zawiera opis grupy Starościńskich Skał w północnej części Rudaw Janowickich, która stanowi jedyny w polskich Sudetach przykład granitowego „skalnego miasta”. Starościńskie Skały to złożona forma ostańcowa, składająca się z szeregu skałek usytuowanych na granitowym cokole o cechach wzgórza wyspowego. Wyniki kartowania terenowego zostały przedstawione na szczegółowej mapie geomorfologicznej, zawierającej 30 wydzieleń. Głównym czynnikiem odpowiedzialnym za rzeźbę skałek jest zróżnicowany system spękań (koncentryczny i prostokątny), do którego nawiązuje dwudzielność kompleksu skalnego. Cechą charakterystyczną tej grupy skalnej jest występowanie bogatej mikrorzeźby, która świadczy o jej stabilności i długim rozwoju powierzchniowym. Niektóre elementy mikrorzeźby – nisze kloszowe – dowodzą jednak tego, że w pierwszym etapie rozwoju skałki były kształtowane podpowierzchniowo, przy istotnym udziale wietrzenia chemicznego.
The paper presents a description of the Starościńskie Skały tor group located in the northern part of the Rudawy Janowickie which is the only example of a granite rock city in the Polish Sudetes. Starościńskie Skały is a specific complex landform composed of various tors situated on a dome-like pedestal. The results of detailed field landform mapping are presented on geomorphological map, which contains 30 elements. The major factor influencing morphology of the Starościńskie Skały is a complex system of joints (sheeting and orthogonal joints) which control the shape of the residual and are responsible for morphological duality of the rock city. A characteristic feature of this tor group is the presence of varied microrelief, which indicates surface stability and protracted development at the surface. However, certain components of microrelief – flared slopes – are an evidence of subsurface chemical weathering of Starościńskie Skały tor group in the first stage of their development.

Opis:
W celu zagospodarowania drobnych, odpadowych frakcji granitowych (0–2 mm) powstających podczas produkcji kruszywa łamanego przeprowadzono badania ich przydatności jako surowca skaleniowego (topniki) dla celów przemysłu ceramicznego. Przedmiotem badań były próbki pochodzące z sześciu kopalń zlokalizowanych w masywie granitoidowym Strzegom-Sobótka (Dolny Śląsk). Charakterystykę surowcową przeprowadzono metodą mikroskopową i na podstawie badań chemicznych. Przydatność tych surowców do produkcji płytek ceramicznych określono opierając się na mikroskopii wysokotemperaturowej oraz spektrofotometrycznym pomiarze barwy próbek po wypaleniu w 1200°C. Na ich podstawie stwierdzono, że w szczególności drobna frakcja ziarnowa granitu z Chwałkowa może stanowić wartościowy surowiec skaleniowy do produkcji płytek gresowych. Charakteryzuje się ona m.in. zawartością alkaliów przekraczającą 7,5% oraz modułem alkaliczności (K2O : Na2O) mniejszym od 1, co w znaczącym stopniu wpływa na obniżenie temperatury topnienia i pojawienie się – w przeciwieństwie do surowca z przewagą skaleni potasowych nad plagioklazami – w niższej temperaturze odpowiedniej ilości fazy ciekłej. Surowiec ten może być – podobnie jak i inne drobne frakcje granitowe – wykorzystywany jako substytut tradycyjnych surowców skaleniowych m.in. do produkcji płytek gresowych o barwnym czerepie.
Fine-grained fractions (0–2 mm), representing waste in the manufacture of crushed road aggregates of some granites, were tested as possible feldspar raw materials that could be utilized as a flux by the ceramics industry. Samples were collected in six quarries located within the Strzegom-Sobótka (Lower Silesia) granitoid massif. The industrial properties of the granite fines were established using the microscopic method and chemical analyses, while the tests of their suitability to produce ceramic tiles were carried out via hot stage microscopy and spectrophotometric color measurements of the tiles fired at 1200°C. The results indicate that it is the fine-grained waste of the Chwałków granite that maybe a valuable feldspar-bearing raw material to manufacture gres tiles. It is characterized by, among other indicators, the total alkali content exceeding 7.5% and the alkalinity modulus (K2O : Na2O) being below 1. These parameters significantly lower the melting temperature and even at such conditions result in the formation of sufficient volumes of a liquid phase, contrary to the mineral raw materials in which K-feldspars prevail over plagioclases. This waste material and other fine-grained fractions tested may, therefore, be a substitute for the traditional feldspar-bearing raw materials that are utilized in the manufacture of gres tiles with coloured bodies, among other usages.

Opis:
Chlorite, a product of very low- to low-grade metamorphism, is frequently used as a geothermometer because of the fact that its structure and chemical composition can reflect the physical and chemical conditions of its formation. In the hydrothermally altered Strzelin and Borów granites (the Fore-Sudetic Block, Poland) chlorite is ubiquitous. It is found in two forms: spherulitic and post-biotite, and was formed in different ways in different parts of the Strzelin and Borów granites: as result of (1) replacement of biotite or (2) crystallisation from fluid. The chlorite formed in the Borów granite shows a higher Fe content than that in the Strzelin granite, a feature related to the content of Mg and Fe in the host rock. Temperatures of chlorite formation are the lowest for unaltered granite and then gradually increase for slightly, moderately and strongly altered granite and are the highest in hydrothermal veins. This means that the temperature of the hydrothermal fluid was higher than that of the altered granitic bodies. Moreover, the spherulitic chlorite formed at a higher temperature than did the post-biotite chlorite, and is usually smaller because biotite replacement lasted longer than did the crystallisation of spherulitic chlorite directly from hydrothermal fluid. Such pattern are likely to occur in other granitic bodies.

Opis:
80 rock samples from drill-cores at 8 localities in the Mazury complex (Polish part of the crystalline East European Craton), representing rock types from monzodiorites to leucogranites, were studied for major, trace and REE elements by XRF and ICP-MS methods. The range in composition of the investigated rocks varies from 46 to 76% SiO2 contents. All of them show similar REE distributions, which suggests that they are genetically linked. They also plot along a major trend with many similarities to the jotunitic liquid line of descent defined in AMCG rocks from Rogaland (Norway). Each group of rocks has however its own specific pattern of elements.

Opis:
New Re/Os isotopic data for molybdenite from the Szklarska Poręba Huta Quarry provide ages of 307 ± 2 Ma and 309 ± 2 Ma, respectively. The quarry is dominated by the porphyritic (“central”) and equigranular (“ridge”) varieties of the Karkonosze granite. Ore mineralisation hosted in aplogranite includes an assemblage of sulphides, sulphosalts, oxides and various rare phases. The molybdenite ages obtained are consistent with a previously published isotopic age of leucogranite (aplogranite?) from the same quarry and are only slightly older than a recently published, refined 2 6Pb/238U age of untreated zircons from the Szklarska Poręba Huta porphyritic granite. The age of the molybdenite corresponds moderately well to the younger stage of post-magmatic, pneumatolitic/hydrothermal activity of the Karkonosze granite (about 312 Ma).
