Opis:
Solar irradiation is the major source of energy delivered to Earth’s atmosphere. Satellite measurements of total solar irradiation are proportional in time to sunspot numbers. Sunspot numbers have a well-organized periodic nature that is predictable in time. At the present time solar activity is in a very low phase and will be increasing over the next few decades. The atmosphere’s consumption of solar energy strongly depends upon the percentages of carbon dioxide and water vapor in it, which can cause greenhouse effects. The recent increases in the percentage of water vapor and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere have caused global warming. Water levels are affected by melting glaciers. The purpose of this paper is to separate the influence of solar activity and greenhouse effects on global warming and to forecast these influences for several decades.

Opis:
Global warming is an important and popular subject across global communities and in a wide array of literature. Global weather patterns are becoming more violent with an increase in the number of catastrophic events. The fundamental concepts of climate are strongly related to the natural freezers on planet Earth. Global warming affects Earth’s natural ice freezers. The warming climate in the Arctic and Antarctic regions are causing an increase in the melting of glaciers, which in turn generates a rise in ocean levels. The rising water levels are causing major regional problems in coastal areas and more importantly they are further accelerating global warming and extreme weather effects. This paper examines the long-term warming of the Arctic and Antarctic regions and the long-term rising water levels in the oceans, in addition to making predictions of these trends for the upcoming decades.

Forests are one the main natural factors that regulate and determine climate, weather patterns and amount of CO2 of an area. With rapid industrialization and rapid urbanization there is a significant increase in deforestation and as a consequence rise in global mean surface temperatures. Rapid and unchecked cut down of forest cover has resulted in some of the worst disasters during the last decades. This paper focuses on studying the role of deforestation, its influence on climate change phenomena and its consequences in Pakistan.

Daily precipitation data from 40 stations are used to investigate the temporal variability of precipitation extremes in Estonia. The period covered is 1961–2008, characterized by a uniformity of observational practice. Precipitation extremes are quantified by yearly and seasonal values of two different parameters: daycount indices based on 95th and 99th percentile thresholds. Trend significance was assessed with the Mann-Kendall test. Results show that the frequency of both indices has increased. No significant negative trends were found. An increase of 15.8 events over the 99th percentile per decade was observed for Estonia. The indices selected for this study may be called ‘soft’ climate extremes, but the number of such events is large enough to allow for meaningful trend analysis in a roughly half-century long time series.

This study investigates the lower Tigris basin’s the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) sensitivity in 2000–2016 to regional climate variability reflected by the monthly precipitation and temperature time series of seven global datasets as well as to four global circulation indices. To examine the effect of climate variability on the different ecosystems, the study area has been classified into 10 smaller natural and anthropogenic landscapes based on landforms and land cover patterns. The preliminary analysis showed that the maximum biological productivity reflected by the NDVI of March and April has the highest correlation (0.5–0.8) to the same cumulative amounts of October–March period total precipitation and January–March period mean temperatures according to all datasets. In addition, this article showed there is a correlation between landscapes’ NDVI and global modulation represented by the September–February state of El Nińo-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) (0.55–0.70) and December state of the dipole mode index (DMI) (0.35–0.72). The significant differences in the original precipitation and temperature levels according to the different datasets have urged the use of normalized time series: z-score of temperatures and analogous six-months the standardized precipitation index (SPI). However, the multiple correlation analysis showed that using ERA-

The variability in the temperature and Relative Humidity (RH) observed within Lagos State, a coastal region in Nigeria, is investigated using data from Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) for 1980 to 2010. The results reveal an annual mean value of 27.20°C and 83.01% for the temperature and RH respectively and an increasing trend in RH over the study period while such rising trend in the mean temperature is reversed from 2005 to 2010. The findings show an inverse relationship between the temperature and RH while it further indicates that low temperature is associated with increased rainfall under the accompanying cloudy condition and vice versa. These observations are supported by the strong correlation coefficients between the RH and the rainfall (0.72) and that between the RH and the temperature (-0.95) while -0.59 is obtained between the rainfall and the corresponding temperature. The correlations show that the impacts of the precipitation on RH are stronger than the effects it has on the temperature while both temperature and RH strongly depends on each other. Hence, under a future global warming, extremely warm atmospheric condition characterized by high RH in the coastal region could cause heat stroke, discomfort and health problems among the inhabitants. However, the area becomes conducive and attractive to tourists under moderate RH and good temperature.

Opis:
Under warming climates, heat waves (HWs) have occurred in increasing intensity in Europe. Also, public interest towards HWs has considerably increased over the last decades. The paper discusses the manifestations of the summer 2014 HW and simultaneously occurring coastal upwelling (CU) events in the Gulf of Finland. Caused by an anticyclonic weather pattern and persisting easterly winds, CUs evolved along the southern coast of the Gulf in four episodes from June to August. Based on data from coastal weather stations, 115 days-long measurements with a Recording Doppler Current Profiler (RDCP) oceanographic complex and sea surface temperature (SST) satellite images, the partly opposing impacts of these events are analysed. Occurring on the background of a marine HW (up to 26°C), the CU-forced SST variations reached about 20 degrees. At the 10 m deep RDCP mooring location, a drop from 21.5 to 2.9°C occurred within 60 hours. Salinity varied between 3.6 and 6.2 and an alongshore coastal jet was observed; the statistically preferred westerly current frequently flowed against the wind. Locally, the cooling effect of the CUs occasionally mitigated the overheating effects by the HWs both in the sea and on the marine-land boundary. However, in the elongated channel-like Gulf of Finland, upwelling at one coast is usually paired with downwelling at the opposite coast, and simultaneously or subsequently occurring HWs and CUs effectively contribute to heat transfer from the atmosphere to the water mass. Rising extremes of HWs and rapid variations by CUs may put the ecosystems under increasing stress.

Opis:
The average temperature of the Earth as a whole is not stable but varies with time, as evidenced by analysis of geological layers. Our planet was colder by ten degrees Celsius 20 000 years ago, during the height of the last ice age. These variations are still very slow, and the temperature has fluctuated by only 0.2 degrees between the year 1000 and the late nineteenth century (ESSLINGER, 2009). The fact that worries the international community at present is the acceleration of the phenomenon, which now occurs at a rate unmatched in the past. Thus, since the late nineteenth century the average global temperature rose by 0.6 degrees. Worse, the computer simulations suggest that warming will accelerate and the average temperature could therefore increase by 1.4 to 5.8 degrees by the end of the century. This phenomenon is called global warming. In this study, global warming effects on soil temperature of Tlemcen (North of Africa), was evaluated by the analysis of spatial and temporal variations of the soil temperature data. The aim of this study is to set an equation, which introduces the ground temperature field as a function of depth, time, and ground thermal properties in an area where the local warming is known. To achieve this goal, numerical solution of general heat conduction equation and a special programme were used. The integration of derived function could be used to determine the heat accumulation in the ground as a result of global warming.
To zjawisko nazwano globalnym ociepleniem.

Climate model results for the Baltic Sea region from an ensemble of eight simulations using the Rossby Centre Atmosphere model version 3 (RCA3) driven with lateral boundary data from global climate models (GCMs) are compared with results from a downscaled ERA40 simulation and gridded observations from 1980 –2006. The results showed that data from RCA3 scenario simulations should not be used as forcing for Baltic Sea models in climate change impact studies because biases of the control climate significantly affect the simulated changes of future projections. For instance, biases of the sea ice cover in RCA3 in the present climate affect the sensitivity of the model’s response to changing climate due to the ice-albedo feedback. From the large ensemble of available RCA3 scenario simulations two GCMs with good performance in downscaling experiments during the control period 1980–2006 were selected. In this study, only the quality of atmospheric surface fields over the Baltic Sea was chosen as a selection criterion. For the greenhouse gas emission scenario A1B two transient simulations for 1961 –2100 driven by these two GCMs were performed using the regional, fully coupled atmosphere-ice-ocean model RCAO. It was shown that RCAO has the potential to improve the results in downscaling experiments driven by GCMs considerably, because sea surface temperatures and sea ice concentrations are calculated more realistically with RCAO than when RCA3 has been forced with surface boundary data from GCMs. For instance, the seasonal 2 m air temperature cycle is closer to observations in RCAO than in RCA3 downscaling simulations. However, the parameterizations of air-sea fluxes in RCAO need to be improved.

High-latitude fjords, very vulnerable to global change, are impacted by their land and ocean boundaries, and they may be influenced by terrestrial water discharges and oceanic water inputs into them. This may be reflected by temporal and spatial patterns in concentrations of biogeochemically important constituents. This paper analyses information relating to the total suspended matter (TSM) concentration in the Porsanger fjord (Porsangerfjorden), which is situated in the coastal waters of the Barents Sea. Water samples and a set of physical data (water temperature, salinity, inherent optical properties) were obtained during two field expeditions in the spring and summer of 2014 and 2015. Bio-optical relationships were derived from these measurements, enabling optical data to be interpreted in terms of TSM concentrations. The results revealed significant temporal variability of TSM concentration, which was strongly influenced by precipitation, terrestrial water discharge and tidal phase. Spatial distribution of TSM concentration was related to the bathymetry of the fjord, dividing this basin into three subregions. TSM concentrations ranged from 0.72 to 0.132 g m−3 at the surface (0–2 m) and from 0.5 to 0.67 g m−3 at 40 m depth. The average mineral fraction was estimated to be 44% at surface and 53% at 40 m.

Opis:
On the basis of monthly averaged satellite data, this study examined how the annual cycle of the Baltic Sea surface temperature (SST) varied spatially and temporally during the period 1986–2005. We conclude that there are two main thermal seasons in the Baltic Sea separated only by short transitional periods – spring lasting about one month, and autumn lasting two months. Generally speaking, summer covers the part of the year from June to October with the highest monthly mean SST in August. Winter, with a minimum monthly mean SST in February in shallow waters or in March in deeper areas, lasts from December to April. As a result of climate changes over the Baltic Sea region, strong positive trends in SST occur in the summer months. In consequence, the period with extremely high sea surface water temperatures has become slightly longer in the central Baltic. In the last decade winter changes in SST display zero or even negative tendencies. The investigated period was characterized by an annual increase in mean temperatures of about 0.03–0.07◦C. However, the rates of monthly mean SST changes were sometimes more than three times as high.

Opis:
W opracowaniu wykorzystano średnie dobowe wartości temperatury powietrza i sumy dzienne usłonecznienia z lat 1884-2016, pochodzące z pomiarów wykonywanych na stacji meteorologicznej Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego w Krakowie. Średnia roczna suma usłonecznienia wynosiła w badanym wieloleciu 1559,3 godzin, maksymalna – 1919,5 (w 1943 r.), a minimalna –1067,2 (w 1980 r.). Największy przyrost temperatury powietrza występuje w chłodnym półroczu, kiedy główną rolę w kształtowaniu temperatury odgrywa cyrkulacja atmosferyczna, a do atmosfery dostarczane są dodatkowe ilości ciepła wynikające z ogrzewania domów.
Krakow is one of the few cities in Europe where sunshine duration and air temperature measurements have been performed at the same location throughout the entire measurement period. The aim of this paper is to characterize the variability of sunshine duration and air temperature and to define the relationship between these climate elements. The data used were the average daily values of air temperature and daily sunshine duration totals from 1884-2016 measured at the meteorological station of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. The average annual sunshine duration total for the multi-year period is 1559.3 hours, while the maximum is 1919.5 (in 1943) and the minimum is 1067.2 (in 1980). The average annual air temperature varied from 6.4°C in 1940 to 11.3°C in 2015. Based on the analysis, it was found that the contemporary climate warming in Krakow is not accompanied by an increase in sunshine duration totals; in fact a decrease over the multi-annual course has been noticed. It may be assumed that the increase in air temperature is not caused by the increase in solar radiation, but rather by the retention of heat in the Earth’s atmosphere coming from the radiation of the Earth or the emission of heat from anthropogenic sources. The biggest increase in the air temperature occurs in the cold half of the year, that is, when the atmospheric circulation plays a major role in shaping the temperaturę and when additional heat is supplied to the atmosphere due to heating the homes.
