Opis:
The article depicts a profile of the last pre-war german Consul General in Katowice Wilhelm Nöldeke (1889–1971). It presents not only his term of offices in Katowice, but also his previous years as well as post-war career in foreign service of the Federal Republic of Germany. Description of this german diplomats lot is to help in understanding the fates of many similar persons serving in german foreign service, who were shaped in the era of the Kaisers’ Germany, gained professional experiences in the Weimar Republic, experienced the reality of the nazi Germany and finally, ended their personal career in realities of democratic german state, ingrained in politically-military structures of the West.

Polish-German relations
Opis:
The Polish-German border is perceived as a symbolic border in the post-war Polish-Germanrelations. In this paper, a lot of attention is devoted to this border in the crucial moments of the Polish-German-relations, such as the tense situation in Poland and former East Germany, political changes in 1989 and Poland joining the EU and Schengen Zone. My discussion concerning the symbolism of the Polish-German border is not limited only to the analysis of historical facts and events, but it also centers on the mentality of Germans and Poles, their mutual perception, sympathy and aversion. It turns out that the abolishing of the state borders seems to be much easier than the reduction of the mental barriers/borders existing between Poles and Germans.

Polish-German relations
Opis:
The discourse on Polish-German relations is redefined after every event which shapes this discourse and makes it spectacular. Undoubtedly, the two events of division and unification of Germany co-create it. The attitude of Poles towards these events, taking into account the permanence of the border on the Oder and the Nysa rivers, had a great influence on the Polish-German relations in the years 1949-1990. This very issue is the major focus of the considerations in the present article.

Opis:
The main focus the paper investigates concerns Polish-German relations from the perspective of imagology. The author of the article concentrates on the stereotype of the polish economy and compares it with the imagological standpoint by analyzing two chosen publications: „Viva Polonia. Als deutscher Gastarbeiter in Polen” by Steffen Möller and „Polen” by Thomas Urban. The above-mentioned analysis should lead to an answer for the following question: can the way of perceiving of the Polish economy be modified by means of well-known authors?

Opis:
“(Late) resettlers”, or to put it in simple terms, people of German ancestry who came to Germany from Eastern Europe after World War II, constitute a peculiar case within the spectrum of German migration. On one hand, they are distinct from foreigners, on the other hand, despite having German citizenship, they stand out from the native German population.L. Wilkiewicz refers to this category as “quasi-forced resettlers”. The forced nature of the young resettlers migration may then be seen as doubly strengthened by the fact that they had no impact on their parents decision to leave the country. They were, in a sort of way, uprooted from their original environment and planted into a new, alien one. Having accepted German citizenship and having been attributed the purpose of “living as Germans among Germans”, the resettlers were expected to show a higher degree of integration with local society than “ordinary” migrants. In this study, I shall confine myself to a few selected aspects affecting the success of integration. Presented below are some of the memories that the young resettlers have of the moment of their “(quasi)-forced” migration, of their early days in Germany, of Poland as the country of their childhood, of the reasons for departure as given by their parents, and of the main factors – apart from those personality-related such as intelligence –that contributed to their successful integration.

Polish-German relations
Opis:
End of the 1980s and early 1990s brought a complete change of almost all factors influencing the position of both Germany and Poland in the international arena. The two countries – for the first time in history – faced the challenge of regulating their neighborly relations based on democratic values and principles of international law. This situation was an opportunity to create the foundations of “good neighborliness and friendly cooperation”, but at the same time once again brought about the need to confront the past – especially the events dating back about 50 years. As it turned out, the two countries not only have not always been in agreement in the mutual perceptions of their place in the new political reality, but disagreed also in the interpretation of common history. In addition, they differ in their views on the shape of mutual relations and prospects for their development. The formal regulation of Polish-German relations in the form of agreements and treaties were confronted with different real-life practice – mainly because of the lack of political will on both sides, coupled with the weakness in terms of implementation of the above documents, and were not enough to solve a number of contentious issues. Also the constant presence in the discussion of current issues and disputes of the historical legacy and resulting burdens did not facilitate conducting a meaningful, to-the-matter dialogue. The article shows the place and role of the past history in contemporary Polish-German relations, how it is used in the political and social discourse, and how it affects the thinking and outlook of the two nations today.

Political cooperation between Poland and Germany has not been running smoothly lately. It has been a long time since those relations had such bad press. The idea of the Center Against Expulsions, the matter of war reparations or discussions concerning the shape of the European Constitution are the issues which have made our relations colder. However, there is a area of co-operation, the military sphere, where co-operation runs exemplary. In this article I would like to draw attention to a few issues connected with this matter.

The transformations of the North Atlantic Alliance in the wake of the 9/11 attacks and its mission in Afghanistan have proceeded hand in hand with the redefining of security interests in individual member states. Poland and Germany have also been affected by a polarization of views, particularly on the nature, place and role of NATO in today’s world. The countries’ geopolitics and their varying visions of European security have significantly affected their positions.

Opis:
Wiara w pojednanie z Bogiem zostaje podniesiona w teologicznie odpowiedniej relacji do społecznego pojednania. Przedmiotem badań stały się następujące dokumenty: Położenie wypędzonych i stosunek narodu niemieckiego do wschodnich sąsiadów. Ewangelickie memorandum (1965), wymiana listów między biskupami polskimi i niemieckimi (1965), Memorandum katolików niemieckich w sprawie zagadnień polsko-niemieckich opracowane przez Bensberger Kreis (1968), O wolność, sprawiedliwość i pokój w Europie. Oświadczenie katolików polskich i niemieckich w pięćdziesiątą rocznicę wybuchu II wojny światowej (1989), kazanie bp. Alfonsa Nossola podczas Mszy św. pojednania w Krzyżowej (1989) oraz Wspólne słowo polskich i niemieckich biskupów z okazji 30. rocznicy wymiany listów (1995).
Members of the Christian Churches considerably influenced the German-Polish reconciliation process after the Second World War. This article analyzes the theological statements in important Church documents dealing with German-Polish relations from 1965 until 1995. It integrates these elements into a theology of reconciliation. This highlights the theological background and the religious motivations of the actors and their Christian commitment for facing the past and dealing with it, in order to overcome hatred and enmity between the two nations. The article establishes a theological correlation between the reconciliation with God and social reconciliation. The following sources have been analyzed: The Eastern Memorandum of the Evangelical Church in Germany (1965), the exchange of letters between the Polish and the German bishops (1965), the Bensberg Memorandum (1968), The Declaration of Polish and German Catholics (1989), the homily of Bishop Alfons Nossol during the Kreisau Reconciliation Mass (1989), and the Joint Declaration of the German and Polish Bishops’ Conferences (1995).
