The aim of this paper is to discuss the changing role and status of writing skills in the methodology of German language teaching, as well as to sketch the most recent trends which point to this issue. Allowing for the idea of autonomy of language teaching, which has been thoroughly discussed during debates concerning foreign language teaching in recent years, an attempt to select and highlight particular competence which should distinguish a student being able to develop writing skills in a foreign language in an autonomous way, has been undertaken in the article. Moreover, the most novel trends in methodology, which can be taken into account in the problem raised in the article, have been briefly presented.

Obwohl über die Methoden der Grammatikvermittlung im Unterricht einer Fremdsprache keine Einigkeit herrscht, ist das Vorhandensein der Grammatik im Unterricht unabdingbar und unbestreitbar. Folglich entstehen immer neuere Materialien zur Grammatikvermittlung, die von unterschiedlichen wissenschaftlichen Prämissen ausgehen und verschiedenen Lehrmethoden folgenden. Im Fokus dieses Beitrags befindet sich die Neuerscheinung „Gebrauchsbezogene Grammatik für Deutsch als Fremd- und Zweitsprache im mehrsprachigen Kontext“, die von Christiane Andersen und Christine Fredriksson verfasst und im Verlag Frank & Timme veröffentlicht wurde. Es handelt sich dabei um ein Lehrwerk, das sich an fortgeschrittene Lerner mit verschiedenen Sprachbiografien wendet. Als Zielgruppe gelten vor allem Lerner, die Englisch als ihre erste Fremdsprache erworben haben. Währenddessen ist Deutsch ihre zweite oder dritte Fremdsprache. Die Darstellung der deutschen Grammatik richtet sich in dieser Publikation nach dem Hauptprinzip der Gebrauchsbezogenheit, wodurch die grammatischen Phänomene stets mit der Hervorhebung ihrer Verwendung im Deutschen vermittelt werden. Abgesehen vom Vorwort und von den die Publikation begleitenden Verzeichnissen gliedert sich das Lehrwerk in sechs Teile: 0. Gebrauchsbezogene Lernprinzipien, 1. Grundlagen, 2. Besonderheiten der deutschen Grammatik, 3. Gebrauch der Wortformen und Phrasen, 4. Gebrauch der Sätze, 5. Aufgaben und Fragestellungen. Im vorliegenden Beitrag gilt es auf den Inhalt des Buches einzugehen und dessen Bedeutung für den Grammatikunterricht vor dem Hintergrund anderer Lehrwerke zur deutschen Grammatik für Fortgeschrittene zu beleuchten.
Although there is no consensus on the methods of teaching grammar in foreign language classes, the presence of grammar in the classroom is essential and undeniable. As a result, more and more new materials are emerging for teaching grammar, which are based on different scientific premises and follow different teaching methods. The focus of this article is the new publication “Gebrauchsbezogene Grammatik für Deutsch als Fremd- und Zweitsprache im mehrsprachigen Kontext”, which was written by Christiane Andersen and Christine Fredriksson and published by Frank & Timme. This is a textbook aimed at advanced learners with different language backgrounds. The target group is primarily those who have learned English as their first foreign language. Meanwhile, German is their second or third foreign language. The presentation of German grammar in this publication is based on the main principle of usage-relatedness, whereby the grammatical phenomena are always conveyed by emphasizing their use in German. Apart from the foreword and the indexes accompanying the publication, the textbook is divided into six parts: 0. Usage-related learning principles, 1. Basics, 2. Special features of German grammar, 3. Use of word forms and phrases, 4. Use of sentences, 5. Tasks and questions. The aim of this article is to address the contents of the book and to shed light on its importance for grammar teaching against the background of other textbooks on German grammar for advanced students.

This paper discusses the issue of irrelevance of the aspect of the Polish verb. In specifi c contexts, the grammatical category of aspect, being obligatory in the Polish language, is in fact redundant. The identifi cation of such contexts (and hence review of the most important current observations and convictions in this respect), the attempt at ordering and describing them enabled systematic material research based on a (Polish–German and German–Polish) translation. The fi ndings presented in the paper might be a good starting point for a refl ection on the reasonability of including the described issue in curricula of teaching Polish as a foreign language. Due to its reach and frequency, the phenomenon of alternation of aspectual partners should be more frequently discussed in the literature dedicated to aspect and Polish glottodidactics.

The present paper aims to emphasize the role of word-formation in teaching German as a foreign language. It demonstrates that the word-formation competence – whose development should constitute an indispensable element of foreign language teaching – is of utmost importance in the process of learning. This paper focuses on the stages of word-formation competence development among learners at the A and B levels of language proficiency.
Niniejszy artykuł traktuje o roli słowotwórstwa w nauczaniu języka niemieckiego jako obcego. Jego celem jest zobrazowanie, jak ważna dla efektywnego uczenia się języka niemieckiego jest kompetencja słowotwórcza, której rozwój powinien być już od samego początku nieodzownym elementem nauczania. Artykuł skupia się przede wszystkim na etapach rozwoju kompetencji słowotwórczej u osób uczących się na poziomie biegłości językowej A i B.

This study investigates the position, content and pedagogy of Landeskunde in proficiency skills-focussed Dutch foreign language teaching. It analyses the course book used most frequently in Dutch secondary education for German as a foreign language: Neue Kontakte. This research examines the position of cultural content in course materials and in explicitly formulated learning goals. Moreover, it is investigated what cultural content is introduced and whether this is either integrated in language proficiency training and connected to the world of the learners. The results show that Neue Kontakte offers a broad range of cultural topics which are either linked to the Netherlands or Dutch or to the learners’ personal environment. Additionally, Landeskunde is integrated in language proficiency exercises. On the other hand, its status is considered weak; no cultural learning goals are formulated and hardly any repetition of cultural content and little critical reflection on the foreign and the own culture are observed.

The aim of this article is to show how German students can be motivated by learning games. Apart from the development and didacticisation of the learning game “Marbles”, the attitude of  Turkish families and language teaching educational establishments and the support of the DaF lessons by German mediating institutions in Turkey will be considered. The attitude of Turkish families to learning foreign languages is mostly positive. Turkish educational authorities and those responsible for education take various measures to expand foreign language teaching availability in the schools. German institutions which provide teachers (Goethe-Institut, ZfA, DAAD) promote the improvement of German teaching in Turkey. Nevertheless, the quality of German teaching is not satisfactory mostly because the available teachers are not adequately qualified, teacher training is remote from practice, the quality of text books and teaching materials, the traditions of learning, the excessively large classes, inadequate learning environment (language cabinets and equipment), the nature and method of central examinations (multiple choice) and their significance in the Turkish educational system. In the long-term, this leads to frustration in both teachers and students. The Turkish educational authorities initially took measures to expand the availability of language teaching in the course of harmonisation of the Turkish educational system to that of the EU e.g. the introduction of a second foreign language. German mediating institutions ensure reasonable further training for teachers locally and in Germany and support the creation of teaching materials etc. The Ministry of Education in Turkey, has started to take measures for students to learn other languages such as German, French, Russian, Spanish, Japanese, Italian, Arabic, ethnic languages in Turkey, et cetera in the educational institutions in addition to English. For example, in the Anatolian high schools two foreign languages are taught.  The Board for Higher Education in Turkey, has introduced second foreign language lessons in  foreign language teacher programs, envisioned to be taken for three semesters, in order for the language teachers to gain experience in the field of two languages.  Private education institutes are emphasizing that they are teaching more than one foreign language in order to draw more students. Families make an economic sacrifice for their children in order for them to learn foreign languages. It is observed that in some districts of certain major cities, teaching of foreign languages has started to be given as early as at kindergarten level. In Turkey, German is preferred as the second foreign language in general. Nowadays, German is the second preferred language from primary to high school in Turkey. The quality of German language lessons should be increased for more students to select German as the second foreign language in the coming years. Despite all these efforts, teaching foreign language is not up to the desired level in Turkey (Bayraktaroğlu, 2014, pp. 9-14; Demircan, 2014, pp. 17-22). For that reason, it is important that motivating teaching methods and teaching materials be developed for German teaching.

Die Entwicklung der interkulturellen Kompetenz ist eines der wichtigsten Ziele des modernen Fremdsprachenunterrichts und eine der herausfordernden Aufgaben der Fremdsprachenlehrenden, insbesondere im schulischen Bereich. Dieses Ziel kann durch den internationalen Schüleraustausch erreicht werden. Internationale Austauschprojekte leisten einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Entwicklung interkultureller Kompetenz. Sie geben den Jugendlichen die Möglichkeit, in eine neue kulturelle und sprachliche Umgebung einzutauchen. Der Beitrag konzentriert sich insbesondere auf deutsch-französische und deutsch-polnische Austauschprogramme. Zusammenfassend wird die ständig wachsende Bedeutung internationaler Austauschprojekte und der interkulturellen Kommunikation in der globalisierten Welt hervorgehoben.
The development of intercultural skills can be considered one of the most crucial goals of modern foreign language teaching. This task seems particularly challenging for school teachers. International school exchanges offer an excellent opportunity for young learners to acquire intercultural skills through immersion in a new cultural and linguistic environment. The article focus especially on German-French and German-Polish exchange programs. More generally, we stress the increasing importance of school exchanges and intercultural communication in a globalized world.
Rozwijanie kompetencji interkulturowej jest jednym z najważniejszych celów nowoczesnego nauczania języków obcych. Zadanie to stanowi niemałe wyzwanie dla nauczycieli w szkołach średnich. Cel ten może być osiągnięty poprzez międzynarodowe wymiany szkolne, które dają młodym ludziom możliwość zdobycia umiejętności interkulturowych poprzez immersję w nowym pod względem kulturowym i językowym środowisku. Artykuł koncentruje się przede wszystkim na niemiecko-francuskich i niemiecko-polskich programach wymian. W podsumowaniu podkreślono istotę organizowania międzynarodowych wymian międzyszkolnych i komunikacji interkulturowej w dobie globalizacji.

Problematyka niniejszego artykułu dotyczy praktykowania dydaktyki wielojęzyczności w nauczaniu języka niemieckiego jako drugiego języka obcego po języku angielskim. W rozważaniach teoretycznych oprócz próby zdefiniowania pojęcia wielojęzyczności i przedstawienia psycholingwistycznych podstaw dydaktyki wielojęzyczności przedstawione zostały założenia koncepcji, która we wspomnianej konstelacji językowej określana jest jako koncepcja DaFnE. Część empiryczna artykułu odnosi się do badania ankietowego, którym objęci zostali nauczyciele języka niemieckiego z terenu aglomeracji Trójmiasta. Celem badania było sprawdzenie, czy i w jakim zakresie nauczyciele języka niemieckiego praktykują dydaktykę wielojęzyczności, wykorzystując swoją znajomość języka angielskiego i znajomość języka angielskiego swoich uczniów.
The following article relates to practising the didactics of multilingualism in teaching German as the second foreign language after English as the first foreign language. In the theoretic part an attempt was made to define a concept of multilingualism and to present the psycholinguistic background of the didactics of multilingualism. In addition, the tenets of the DaFnE concept that pertains to the above language constellation were presented. The practical part refers to an empirical study that was conducted among teachers of German in the area of Trójmiasto. The aim of the study was to investigate if and in which fields teachers of German practise the didactics of multilingualism using their knowledge of English, as well as their pupils’ command of this language.

The article presents a detailed analysis of the professional lexicon of didactics in German as a foreign language prepared by Renata Czaplikowska and Artur Dariusz Kubacki. During assessment of the publication, primarily its thematic scope and usefulness on the publishing market were considered, with a view to other already available publications related to a similar thematic scope. Furthermore, the article evaluates the accuracy of phrases’ selection, the manner of presenting content contained in the lexicon, substantive values, whilst taking into account diverse target groups for which this publication may constitute a valuable source of knowledge. The summary of the article contains a comprehensive evaluation of the publication which constitutes an interesting item on the Polish publishing market.
