The paper is concerned with stability properties of bounded outer inverses for bounded operators on Banach spaces. We investigate the effect of perturbations of subspaces generating outer inverses for a given operator. We prove that the convergence of respective gaps between subspaces implies the convergence in the norm of outer inverses generated by these subspaces. The notion of outer inverses is illustrated by an example which gives the form of outer inverses for an arbitrary matrix.

Erving Goff man has not only had a huge impact upon his home discipline of sociology but may be its most cited, as well as best known member ever. Nevertheless, Goff man continues to be heavily criticized by his fellow sociologists for his allegedly undecipherable and sloppy methods for conducting empirical research and constructing and accumulating general theory. We demonstrate here that while some of his specific practices were intuitive and unorthodox, and perhaps not always available to Goff man himself through self-reflection, they often included systematic empirical comparisons and generalizations, and grounded, general theory. It is tragic that he apparently died lamenting that these common characteristics of his work have been so little recognized (Berger 1986). He encouraged Verhoeven (1993), among others, to rectify this, and hopefully our own eff orts here have contributed to this important, but unfinished business.

This paper describes a preliminary study examining how the audience of stand-up comedy approach humor analysis. By expanding the scope of the General Theory of Verbal Humor (Attardo 2001), it was possible to use the framework to aid and systematize the interpretation process, resulting in shifting the theory’s focus from humor production to humor perception. The first part of the paper introduces the main premise of stand-up comedy. The second part is devoted to the theoretical aspects, namely the theory of humor. The third part discusses the methodology of the preliminary study: a two-step interpretation task done by four audience members. The fourth and the fifth sections present the results of the study and discuss the implications. The outcome of the analysis gives an understanding as to what the audience may focus on during the interpretation process, which allows for identification of differences in humor perception.

Ever since its beginnings, landscape ecology has been developing in two different directions: the bioecological and the geoecological. While the bioecological approach is focused on the relationship between organisms and their abiotic environment, the geoecological approach is based on the relationship between human society and its, primarily abiotic, environment. Therefore, the geoecological approach can be applied in planning human use of the environment in a long term sustainable manner, while the bioecological approach could represent the basis for the planning of conservational and environmental usage. The merging of these two approaches will result in a comprehensive and more holistic landscape ecology, which will thus gain the potential for coordinating interdisciplinary landscape research and a more prominent role in contributing to spatial planning. The merge will also enhance attempts to create a general theory of landscape systems.

Recent pragmatic research focuses on the issue of identity construction via humor. In this paper, we intend to investigate how could the General Theory of Verbal Humor (in Attardo 2001, henceforth GTVH) contribute to the analysis of humor as a means of identity construction. Among the six knowledge resources proposed by the GTVH we focus on target and script opposition. The first one helps us identify whose behavior our young informants consider incongruous and, at the same time, worth laughing at. The second one reveals the specific (and often implicit) norms and values shared by conversationalists. We illustrate our points using Greek conversational narratives coming from same-gender groups of young Greek males and females. We show that, in our data, conversationalists select targets either outside or inside their group. Special emphasis is given to self-targeting humor (henceforth STH) and its function as a discourse strategy used for identity construction. Previous research on this kind of humor has revealed that STH can be interpreted as an index of either lack or presence of self-confidence and self-esteem. Our data show that, by using STH, our interlocutors indirectly point to a positive self-image. In all cases, the target of humor reinforces the existing bonds among group members, while bringing the evaluative dimension of humor to the surface and revealing the group values. Finally, our analysis brings an interesting pragmatic difference to the surface. This difference is related to the effect of humor on the identities constructed: through humor directed at other people's behavior (in the cases of out- and in-group targets), the speaker eventually de-legitimizes those others, while, through self-targeting humor, the speaker aims at legitimizing him/herself and his/her own actions.

This paper attempts to describe the strategic dimension of the eristic dialectic, which is frequently defined as the art of the dispute. This goal is embedded in reflections on the general theory of confrontational acts and situations. The text stresses the fact that strategic thinking about the art of discussion is not given sufficiently deep consideration. Another observation pertains to the fact  that the essence of the strategic design of discussions lies in the analysis of long-term results, which can be attained in the course of the exchange of arguments. At the same time, this analysis must not be limited exclusively to identifying the objectives of the discussion or the means of attaining them. Argumentative strategy also includes reflection on the side effects, both positive and negative, which may be the product of a specific communication practice.

In this review I am starting a discussion on the subject of the notion „holism”, which was brought by the European Academy of Teachers of Family Medicine into the definition of a family doctor. This notion characterizes one of six axial skills of a family doctor. The holism is known in medical science mainly in field for the human physiology and it shows that a human organism as a whole is something more than just the sum of one’s parts. Feedbacks between the gigantic number of molecules are creating new in terms of quality correctness which may act in complicated and unpredictable way. Other disciplines like psychology and sociology adapted the holism to theories explaining public behaviors. The „holism” is waking big controversies up because of its negative associations with alternative and complementary medicine, with New Age moves and the shamanism. In the new medical discipline – value of the communication with the patient is being underlined in family medicine but medical consultation still has a central meaning. Theories of the chaos and complexities can explain a lot of phenomena in this context, which have the influence of functioning of the entire system of the health care. Correct understanding new medicine notions can prevent appropriating these notions for the needs of charismatic healers.

American legal realism is commonly treated as a theory-pariah. The article exposes certain reasons explaining such a treatment. Generally, it seems that such an attitude is a result of many misunderstandings of realist aims and ambitions, some of which pertain to the theoretical status of legal realism and its relation to so called general jurisprudential theories, such as legal positivism. In the first part of the article I explain generally what these aims were and how one should see these relations. In the second part I briefly analyze B. Leiter’s famous claim that legal realism is conceptually dependent on hard legal positivism (as a general theory of law). The critique of this claim opens the possibility for some alternative understanding of legal realism.

Przedstawiony artykuł jest próbą ujęcia różnych obszarów funkcjonowania miasta poprzez Ogólną Teorię Systemów, opracowaną przez Bertalanffy w 1937 roku, jednak stale aktualną, a nawet zyskującą na znaczeniu w coraz szybciej żyjącym świecie. W rozdziale zostały poruszone zagadnienia oddziaływania na siebie rynku przedsiębiorstw, mieszkaniowego oraz rynku nieruchomości. Związek pomiędzy tymi trzema obszarami jest tak oczywisty i silny, że często aż pomijany w różnych prowadzonych analizach. Przedstawiony w niniejszej publikacji artykuł stara się pokazać relacje między tymi dwoma systemami i ich wpływ na rozwój miasta. Przyjętą metodą badawczą jest analiza tekstów, materiałów i danych z zakresu ekonomii i filozofii, a także przytoczonych fragmentów badań własnych przeprowadzonych w poszczególnych latach.
The presented article is an attempt to capture various areas of the city’s functioning using the General Theory of Systems, developed by Bertalanffy in 1937, but still relevant, and even gaining in importance in an ever faster living world. This chapter explores the interplay between corporate, residential and real estate markets. The link between these three areas is so obvious and strong that it is often overlooked in various analyzes. The article presented in this publication tries to show the relationship between these systems and their impact on the development of the city, which in the long run aims to be sustainable. The adopted research method is the analysis of texts, materials and data in the field of economics and philosophy, as well as transfused fragments of own research carried out in individual years.

The aim of the experiment described in the current paper was to analyze existing relationships between physical aggression, verbal aggression, anger, and hostility and an overall level of tension (and its types), social control and contacts in crime environment among girls and boys from above secondary schools. Altogether, there were 133 participants (66 girls and 67 boys aged between 16 and 18 years old). The measurements used were as follows: Aggression Questionnaire by Buss–Perry in Amita version (prepared by E. Aranowska J., Rytel, and A. Szymańską, 2015) investigating four dimensions of aggressiveness, and Questionnaire of a feeling of tension and restricting factors by E. Czerwińska-Jakimiuk (2011). A method of diagnostic survey was used and the experiment had a qualitative character. A correlation analysis using a rho-Spearman factor between the above-mentioned dimensions of aggressiveness and an overall level of tension (and its types), social control, and contacts in crime environment revealed significant relationships between variables, both among girls and boys. Among girls, none from the analyzed scales of tension and contacts in crime environment showed any significant relationship with verbal aggression. Among boys, a majority of the scales of tension, social control, and also contacts in crime environment correlated significantly with dimensions of aggressiveness.
