An uncontrolled intersection is a critical area for crashes that depends on macroscopic traffic parameters. While the intersection is the potential of the center of crashes due to inappropriate decision of driver. Therefore, the study focuses on the effect of the gap acceptance parameter for the safety of drivers at an uncontrolled intersection. To examine, a systematic review of the literature is implemented to understand the different parameters, their impact, and models developed by the researchers. Additionally, it is demonstrated that the crashes are highly affected by the gap acceptance and the different models are formed to estimate the critical gap for different road sections under homogeneous and heterogeneous traffic conditions. However, it is not possible to definitively conclude the best model to evaluate the gap acceptance factor but can be preferred to reduce the severity of crashes. Nonetheless, most studies remain inconclusive, there is an emerging trend in the literature suggesting the increase of the crash risk at an uncontrolled intersection. Lastly, it is most important to mention the model suitability based on empirical studies commenced under the strong limitations. Consequently, there is a need for research in this area to correlate the gap acceptance with road safety to reduce the severity of accidents to improve the existing transportation system.

Opis:

The article addresses the issue of legal gaps (lacunas). Specifically, the author puts forward the general definition of legal gap which uses the concept of ‘automatically applicable’ legal rule as well as presupposes specific understanding of law – namely, that it is consisted solely of the rules of the mentioned type. Next, basing upon that definition, he defines three kinds of lacunas that are commonly distinguished in Polish and international scholarly literature, i.e. extra, intra and contra legem. As it is demonstrated, the merits of proffered definitions are manifold. First of all, they reduce the dependence of the notion of legal gap on value judgment. Secondly, they fairly well fit into the structure of contemporary legal orders. Thirdly, owing to them, the filling of legal gaps is not pointless. And lastly, the other kinds of lacunas one may encounter in academic literature are not at odds with the proffered theory, at least not by definition. At the end of the article, in the light of the main idea of the author’s conception, the Anglo -Saxon notion of the case of first impression is discussed, taking into account different models of (approaches to) the phenomenon of a binding judicial precedent.

Current financial regulation requires banks to have interest rate risk methods in place commensurate with the size and complexity of the bank. The more sophisticated model, the better the prediction of the future Net Interest Income and its sensitivity to the movement of the interest rate curve. The static methods of which an overview is presented in this article, struggle with limitations such as an unchanged interest rate curve, the non-inclusion of items with optionality and many others. The objective of this article is to show how static methods progressed with time, and how some of their limitations presented by a basic Maturity Gap analysis can be addressed in an interesting way. In addition, it also provides the reader with an interpretation of the results of the analysis performed through the aforementioned methods.

The purpose of the paper is to identify the determinants of the gap in Value Added Tax and to assess the measures already taken in order to seal this gap. A thorough understanding of the VAT gap mechanism will facilitate the implementation of appropriate measures to limit the scale of occurrence of tax offenses. Determinants of the VAT gap do not only embrace tax fraud and tax evasion, although these two factors are the most important and are sometimes even identified with the concept of VAT gap. (presented are in Part 1 of this article). The size of the gap is also affected by other factors such as methodological errors, cyclical factors, gray area, problems with financial liquidity and bankruptcy of taxpayers. Their importance and problems with estimation will be presented in this part of the article.

The article discusses the gender pension gap understood as the difference between the amounts of pensions received by men and women, focusing on Italy and Poland. It analyzes the inequalities and changes in men’s and women’s pensions and identifies the causes of such inequalities. As a result of the analysis, an attempt is made to identify the most important factors affecting inequalities in the pension amounts. The study finds that the retirement age gap and the related years in employment figures for men and women have a significant impact on the pension gap, in addition to the existence of the pay gap between the two sexes. Life expectancy and the working and post-working age population structure are factors that affect the pension gap even further. A comparison between Italy and Poland allows for the conclusion that although the pension gap is present in both the countries, the former presents a lower one than the latter. Moreover, the actions planned to be taken in Italy are bound to reduce the gap even further. On the contrary, not only is Poland’s pension gap widening, but there are also few factors likely to restrain it in the future.

Easy access from platforms to trains is limited by the free space between the platform edge and coach floor, named the gap. The standard definition of the gap is described together with a description of all the difficulties affecting passengers, arising from different platform heights and different passenger vehicle floor placements over the rail head. The gap is a cause of accidents. The tax gap, understood as the difference between the planned (potential) tax incomes to the state budget and the actual amounts of taxes paid by the taxpayers, is influenced by numerous factors. These include all activities undertaken by entrepreneurs aimed at hiding transactions for which taxes should be paid. A special group of such activities are VAT frauds. In his article, the author presents the most important information on illegal practices related to VAT calculation, as well as changes proposed by the Polish government aimed at reducing the respective tax gap. The planned solutions have been assessed from the perspective of their advantages and flaws that directly affect the stability of the operational and legal environment of the taxpayers and the tax administration.

Background: The VAT gap is a key topic in the context of state budget revenues. The European Union introduced measures to support the member states in reducing the VAT gap. However, if such support is to be effective, it must be applied in the areas that are directly related to the VAT gap. Research purpose: The study aims to identify significant determinants of the VAT gap in EU countries. The present study identifies factors that the EU as a whole can deal with to suport member states in reducing the VAT gap. Methods: The study concerns the analysis of descriptive statistics of selected variables and the econometric model with the GMM system, based on which it was possible to identify significant determinants of the VAT gap in the group of EU countries. Conclusions: The key determinants of the VAT gap in the group of EU countries are economic growth and efficiency of governance. As a consequence, the EU policy aimed at reducing the VAT gap should focus mainly on those aspects that have a significant impact on the states’ revenue and are under the jurisdiction of the EU. The most important aspects that the EU as a whole should focus on are the economic growth and the efficiency of the administration’s activities. Indicating the directions of EU action fills the current research gap in this area.
Przedmiot badań: Zagadnienie luki podatku VAT jest kluczowym tematem w kontekście dochodów budżetu państwa. Unia Europejska podejmuje działania wspierające państwa członkowskie w ograniczeniu luki VAT, lecz by to wsparcie miało realny wymiar, musi być skierowane na te obszary, które stanowią rzeczywisty czynnik luki VAT w UE. Cel badawczy: Celem badania jest wskazanie istotnych determinant luki podatku VAT państw UE jako zbioru państw funkcjonujących we wspólnocie gospodarczej. Badanie pozwoli na wskazanie tych czynników, którymi może zająć się UE jako całość, by wspierać państwa wspólnotowe w ograniczaniu luki VAT. Metoda badawcza: Badanie dotyczyło analizy statystyk opisowych wybranych zmiennych oraz zbudowania modelu ekonometrycznego za pomocą systemu GMM, na podstawie którego możliwe było wskazanie istotnych determinant luki VAT w grupie państw UE. Wyniki: Kluczowymi determinantami luki podatku VAT w grupie państw UE są wzrost gospodarczy i efektywność rządzenia. W konsekwencji polityka UE nastawiona na redukcję luki VAT powinna skupiać się wyłącznie na tych aspektach, które mają realnie istotny wpływ i są w gestii organów UE. Najważniejszymi aspektami, na których może się skupić UE jako całość, to wzrost gospodarki oraz poprawa skuteczności i efektywności działań administracji.

In this research note, I examine a set of two interrelated questions about the Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) methods institutes. First, I assembled and analyzed a novel dataset that tracks every QCA related training worldwide from 2002 to 2018. My examination finds that although QCA trainings are becoming more popular in Europe, the US is still the single most frequent host country for such events. Secondly, I examine the extent to which gender gap exists among QCA instructors. My findings show that female QCA instructors are severely under-represented, which likely limits their academic and professional opportunities. Thus, the QCA research community appears to be marked by the same structural challenges to diversity and gender equality as other areas of political science. Overall, this paper should of interest to scholars interested in the impact of academic infrastructures on future research trajectories as well as those concerned about gender equality in academia.

The paper presents a numerical analysis of unsteady flow through the gap of a Savonius turbine rotor, performed for varying integral turbine operating parameters calculated for the case under study as well as obtained from experiments described in the literature. Changes in the unsteady flow pattern, including the development and interaction of numerous vortex structures in the vicinity of the gap, and their relevance to the varying integral parameters are discussed. We conclude that the structure responsible for the intensity of the flow through the gap is a vortex which forms in the vicinity of the gap at certain phases of rotor revolution, and that a possible way to improve the efficiency of operation of a Savonius turbine is to control the intensity of this vortex by modifying the shape of the blade edges in the vicinity of the gap.

Avoiding paying taxes, if is becomes a common phenomenon, inevitably leads to the collapse of public finances. The aim of this publication is to discuss basic tax estimation, the presentation of the essence of the matter and its efficiency evaluation. The important part of the publication is an analysis of the effectiveness of estimating the tax base on the basis of information provided by a representative group of tax offices. The study included the results of the study group offices in the 2007–2011 period. The paper also evaluated the effectiveness of estimating the tax base in the light of the case law of administrative courts. The study shows the small importance of the institution of estimating a tax base as an effective mechanism for reducing the tax gap in Poland. This shows the need for a further reform of the Polish tax system, to simplify tax structure.

Professional identity combines some elements of personal and social identity in the area of goals, values, principles and measures. The paper focuses on the reflection of ambiguity of creating teachers’ professional identity during educational reform. The new system of teachers’ professional advancement has been in place in Poland for more than ten years. We have conducted complex empirical research aimed at comprehensive evaluation of that system (teachers, heads of schools and local authorities were surveyed). The theoretical framework is constructed on the concepts of the contemporary narrative theories of Ch. Taylor, A. Giddens, P. Ricoeur. There is a yawning gap between the path of improvement of quality imposed by the formal requirements of the system and the needs and educational aims formulated by teachers themselves, stemming from their everyday practice. The research provided important implication for educational policy, such as: a necessity for combining statutory requirements with particular school needs and teachers’ individual development.

W atrykule są przetwornika niektóre obliczenia, związek między sygnałem wychodzącym przetwornika a parametrami geometrycznymi przetwornika, rozmieszczeniem jego elementow względnie jegen drugiego. Wyniki mogą byc wykorzystane w celu optymizacji ukladu przetwornika i konstrukcji, stosowanej dla mierzeń w praktyce. Takže byli ustawione czynniki, mające wpływ na wynniki mierzenia i był przedstawiony model niekrelonego mierzenia.
Converters (EMC) with air gap asymmetry, which influences the quality of generation process and characterises the technical condition of the generator. It is necessary to supervise air gap in generators, using measurement equipment. This work was intended to develop a theoretical basis for design of air gap measurement converter, investigating the mathematical model of rotary system with an air gap. The paper presents some numerical results of calculations, relationship between the converter's output signal and converter's geometrical parameters as well as their position in respect of each other can be used to achieve and optimal converter design. Measurement uncertainty model was developed and presented too.

Opis:

Conflicts in the 21st century have forced qualitative changes in the way of training missionary personnel. Police forces are currently used in various joint operations, which include, among others, elements of the fight against terrorism, ensuring the security of civilians and training of security forces. New types of operations require corrected preparation systems. This article analyses the previous way of preparing such units as Individual Police Officers, Specialized Police Teams, Formed Police Units, as well as the issue related to the training modification proposal, and one of them is the implementation of the virtual game “Gaming for Peace” as a supplement to the training gap through modern and more effective training.

Plastic bonded explosives (PBXs) based on ε-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane (ε-HNIW), 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazinane (RDX), β-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocane (β-HMX) and cis-1,3,4,6-tetranitro-octahydroimidazo-[4,5-d]imidazole (BCHMX) were prepared using a hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene as a binder (HTPB) and cured with hexamethylene di-isocyanate (HMDI). Recently published data for analogous PBXs with a polyisobutylene binder (i.e. a C4 matrix) are also included. All of these PBXs were tested using the Small Scale Water Gap Test according to STANAG 4490, the results of which are directly proportional to the impact and friction sensitivities of the PBXs studied. Reciprocal ratios between the shock sensitivity of these PBXs and their performance were found using the volume heat of explosion as a variable; a semi-logarithmic analogue, using a representative of the detonation pressure (product ρD2) as a variable, has shown an opposite trend for three of these PBXs. A semi-logarithmic relationship between the shock sensitivity of the PBXs and the impact sensitivity of their pure nitramine fillers has confirmed the higher shock reactivity of the C4 PBXs filled with both technical ε-HNIW and RS-ε-HNIW, while for the HTPB PBXs filled with technical grade ε-HNIW, the shock sensitivity found was as expected. The shape and size of the particles should not be a reason for the increased resistance to shock of HMX-C4.

Mark Kac gave an example of a function f on the unit interval such that f cannot be written as f(t)=g(2t)-g(t) with an integrable function g, but the limiting variance of $n^{-1/2}\sum_{k=0}^{n-1} f(2^kt)$ vanishes. It is proved that there is no measurable g such that f(t)=g(2t)-g(t). It is also proved that there is a non-measurable g which satisfies this equality.

Opis:

Complex gaps may be formed when carrying out live working in substations, while the discharge characteristics of complex gaps are different from those of single gaps. This paper focuses on the prediction of critical 50% positive switching impulse breakdown voltage (50,crit+) of phase-to-phase complex gaps formed in 220 kV substations. Firstly, several electric field features were defined on the shortest discharge path of the complex gap to reflect the electric field distribution. Then support vector machine (SVM) prediction models were established according to the connection between electric field distribution and breakdown voltage. Finally, the 50,crit+ data of the complex gap were obtained through twice electric field calculations and predictions. The prediction results show that the minimum 50,crit+ of phase-to-phase complex gaps is 1147 kV, and the critical position is 0.9 m away from the high voltage conductor, accounting for 27% of the whole gap. Both critical position and voltage are in good agreement with the values provided in IEC 61472.

The purpose of this article is an attempt to prove that it is very unlikely that the development gap between Poland and Norway will be significantly reduced in the coming years. This thesis has been verified by identifying position of both countries in the field of sustainable development - to be more precise: in the context of the ten dimensions of development (SDI theme) included in the EU Sustainable Development Strategy (socioeconomic development, sustainable consumption and production, social inclusion, demographic changes, public health, climate change and energy, sustainable transport, natural resources, global partnership, good governance). As a result the distance between Norway and Poland in the field of sustainable development has been indicated. The study was based on information obtained from the database of Eurostat and the OECD. Generally speaking the sustainable development indicators were presented in relation to the 2004 and 2013 years.

The high IT project failure rate means that the stakeholders start recognizing the need to analyze the factors influencing project success, previously deemed irrelevant in the face of technology, including the agile approach, eliminating project documentation, effective prototyping, information asymmetry between project parties, while also perfecting communication and the methods of knowledge transfer between team members. Currently, IT projects are researched using a holistic approach, seeing an implementation project as a whole, subject to specific regularities, which may not be deduced based on the knowledge of their individual components. We would like to enrich the research perspective with the notion of the information gap. The article aims to evaluate and analyze the information gap in ERP and CRM project implementations. We have researched the information gap from the perspective of project managers on the supplier’s and the client’s sides. The study was conducted in Poland between 2014 and 2021 in a group of medium companies, using qualitative research methods: unstructured interview and direct observation. The study led to a qualitative characterization of the information gap and the identification of its causes and consequences. The presented research result can help achieve three goals, i.e. studying the information gap in the selected group of IT projects, indicating the nature of imperfection in information access by the project participants, and raising awareness amongst project managers regarding risk management issues, especially uncertainty. Reducing the information gap can be used by the transaction parties to implement a strategy of building the object’s resilience to uncertainty and its consequences. These results can help develop methodologies of IT project implementation, limiting the level of risk and uncertainty.

In this paper, the author provides a description and an explanation of regional variation in gender wage gaps in Poland, and shows that the gap is especially large in the Silesian Voivodeship (ca 25.44%). He presents several explanations for this phenomenon. First, gender wage discrimination is likely to be especially strong in Silesia. Second, in this region, men typically work in bigger firms than women. Third, the distribution of women between different occupations and industries in Silesia is especially disadvantageous for their relative wages. Fourth, the structure of occupational wage differentials in Silesia is also unfavourable for women, i.e. predominantly female occupations pay relatively less in Silesia than in other regions.

Opis:

Industry 4.0 is an era in which the manufacturing industry has adopted digital technologies and the Internet to enable smart manufacturing system, machines used in the production now can communicate with each other and exchange information between each other, and the machinery used in the manufacturing process is more modern and precise. Therefore, educational institutions should develop the curriculum to produce qualified graduates with the knowledge required for the Industry 4.0 era, especially Industrial Engineering graduates who are directly related to the industry sector. The purpose of this research is to collect the data for the Master of Industrial Engineering (MSIE) curriculum development. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) technique is used to rank the indicators of knowledge that is important to the employment of graduates with a master’s degree in Industrial Engineering, and study the gap between the expectations of employers and the ability of the current MSIE students of Khon Kaen University. The results of the study reveal that the first indicators that are most important to the employment of MSIE graduates is the knowledge of Industry 4.0 strategy and the knowledge that the students should have developed are the collaboration of humans and robots, big data analytics, real time data usage and databased decision making.

We propose an empirical analysis of testing the relationship between gender wage gap and economic growth. The study takes into account 12 manufacturing sectors in 18 OECD countries for the period between 1970 and 2005.We use industrial statistics (EU KLEMS, 2008) on female and male wages that distinguish between wages paid to different groups of workers classified according to skill level: high, medium and low. We estimate augmented production function where the male-female wage differentials constitute a potential channel influencing growth (posi-tively or negatively). Our research is motivated by the ambiguous results of previous empirical studies (e.g.: Seguiono 2000; Busse, Spielmann 2006; Seguino 2011; Schober, Winter-Ebmer 2011). Our main findings indicate that gender wage gap for high, medium and low-skilled workers is negatively correlated with sectoral growth. This results are confirmed in a number of robustness checks.

Dynamic changes in the security environment are forcing us to reflect on the shape of the international order at the end of the second decade of the 21st century. The aggressive policy of the Russian Federation, which is confirmed by the conflict with Georgia in 2008 and the current situation in Ukraine, indicates that the use of military violence in the resolution of international disputes is not a historical category at all. This is of particular importance to the geopolitical location of the Republic of Poland. The length of our land border with the Russian Federation is 210 km, while with Belarus it is 418 km. The above fact has a fundamental impact not only on the public debate on the security of our country and the region, but also, and perhaps most importantly, on the shape of defence policy and the content of planning possible measures to prevent and counteract the escalation of prospective tensions in NATO-Russia relations. Both Russian military doctrine and the opinions expressed by politicians and specialists dealing with military issues and political and military experts indicate that, from the Russian perspective, the Baltic States’ membership of the North Atlantic Alliance and the presence of NATO troops on the territory of these countries, is highly unfavourable. Therefore, there are grounds to believe that countries such as Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, are treated by Russia as natural bridgeheads, convenient for bringing possible strikes against Russia. Therefore, it is possible that blocking communication routes leading to these countries, while cutting them off from the support of allied land forces, may prove to be a key success factor in the situation of a hypothetical armed conflict, aimed not only at depriving these countries of their sovereignty, but also aimed at discrediting the power of the Alliance.

Purpose of the text is to study a concept of development capability and possibility to express it quantitatively. Concept of organization’s development is shown as process of eliminating gaps encountered by organization. A mathematical model of “problem cleaning” is used. It is shown that: There is a mathematical model of closing development gap, which involves characteristics of gap, of resources and parameters of development process. There are four quantities that determine performance of development process. They refer to organization’s characteristics that are set by the strategic management. Model illustrates impact of strategic decisions on effectiveness of development and shows that “time to gap” is one of key factors that determine development capability.

In this work, the validation of selected presented method measured of length fatigue gap was shown. The article describes three methods of determining fatigue gaps. The object of the study was the first stage compressor blade from aircraft engine. Blades have defects on the leading edge. This defect on the blade (as a result of the resonance vibration) was the origin point of the fatigue gap. Two of the methods, fluorescent and thermovision, were optical. The fluorescent method was a direct measurement, whereas direct-indirect thermography. The last of the presented methods was an analytical method, showing an algorithm based on amplitude-frequency characteristics. The advantages and disadvantages of these methods were compared. As a result of the analysis performed by the algorithm, there were specified patterns defining the dependence of change in crack length depending on the asymmetry of AF characteristics. The accuracy of the following methods and the results obtained for chord length were determined. Thanks to such use, these results have a utilitarian meaning. Such a compilation allowed us to evaluate the usefulness of particular measurement methods. Proposed methods of measuring the length of fatigue crack are used in experimental studies. It is also possible to implement them for research conducted during the operation of an aircraft engine.

The synovial joint has two main components: solid one represented by the cartilage, and bio-fluid by the synovial fluid. The cartilage is a soft anisotropic solid containing pores filled with a fluid. In this paper is determined the pressure distributions in a thin layer of non-Newtonian, lubricant inside the deformable gap of spherical human hip joint. The load carrying capacities in human joints with cartilage deformations are much smaller than that obtained for not deformable cartilage surface. The changes of the joint gap height during the lubrication process are caused by the deformation of two cooperating spherical joint surfaces covered by the soft cartilage superficial layer. Hypo-elastic deformations of cartilage are taken into account. In the general case the cartilage can be subjected to large deformations. The main results described in this paper are as follows: 1.Numerical calculated values of pressure distributions for the elbow cylindrical human joints performed in this paper by virtue of analytical models taking into account the effects of congenial and growth influences on the lubrication process are compared with initial measured hydrodynamic pressure values performed by means of AFM. Measured pressure values obtained by the S. Chizhik et al. 2006 in experimental way, are different about 7 percent from the numerical values obtained in presented paper using the analytical solutions. 2.In presented paper is derived the modified Reynolds equation containing the terms describing the influences of congenial and genetic properties of the lubricant and micro-bearing materials on the pressure and load carrying capacity of bio-joints and micro-bearing. The comparisons presented in this project between human bio-joints and micro-bearings are indicated that the biobearing theory of lubrication is very helpful in MEMS and NEMS devices. The research presented in the project provides an important impact for developing the new scientific domain such as cyto-tribology, histo-tribology or tribology of cells, and tissue and of micro-surfaces occurring in mechanical micro-bearings. According to the participants knowledge such scientific domains are completely new and have been not so far initiated by any scientific centre and in any area of tribology and tissue engineering.

Opis:

Films of PEG after and before doped by carboxymethyle cellulose CMC were deposed on glass substrates by drop casting method. The absorbance and transmittance spectra have been recorded for all the deposited films in order to study the optical constants such as, refractive index, extinction coefficient, optical conductivity, real and imaginary parts of the dielectric constant, these additives effect all the parameters under study and enhance their value especially the optical absorption. The values of absorption coefficient refer to allowed direct transition.

Opis:

Cadmium oxide (CdO) thin films were formed by chemical spray pyrolysis technique for different substrate type (glass, quartz, ITO). Absorption spectra were recorded from UV-Visible spectrophotometer in the range of 300-900 nm. The absorbance increased when the glass substrate replaced to quartz or ITO substrate, also this behavior for absorption coefficient and extinction coefficient. While the refractive index tack unstable behavior. The energy gap decreased from 2.4 eV for CdO thin film deposited on glass substrate to 2.36 eV for CdO thin film deposited on ITO substrate.

Opis:

ZnO thin film with an aim to employ in opto-electronic applications was prepared using sol-gel dip-coating route and thereafter sintered at temperature 500 ºC. The film has been investigated by XRD pattern, SEM, UV-Vis and photoluminescence spectroscopy for physical and optical characterization of ZnO thin film. X-Ray diffraction pattern analysis reveals the polycrystalline nature with hexagonal wurtzite structure having orientation along the plane (002). Scanning electron micrograph shows symmetrical dense ZnO rod throughout the surface. The diffuse reflectance spectrum is studied in the range of wavelength 300-800 nm. A band gap of 3.21 eV is calculated using Kubelka-Munk function. PL spectrum shows strong peak at 380 nm due to oxygen vacancy of ZnO.

Opis:

The authoress argues that the conception of emptiness, ambivalent on physical and philosophical grounds, can be projected onto natural language. On the one hand, we can face here 'absolute emptiness', which is a total lack of certain elements in the linguistic system, on the other - gaps that tend to be filled in by the language user. It seems that the natural human propensity to complete the encountered empty places, lacunae, areas of indeterminacy, or blind spots is also well-visible in language and although such gaps can be spotted at each linguistic level, their occurrence is especially interesting at the level of semantics, stylistics and discourse analysis. The question of how interlocutors, readers and translators cope with such areas of blindness has been discussed by philosophers, literary critics, linguists and semioticians (most notably R. Ingarden, W. Iser, U. Eco, L. Dolezel). Dolezel rightly pointed out that 'absences' and 'silences' in texts (mostly fictional) can be either total (i. e. the ontological indeterminacy of fictional worlds) or only apparent (implicit meanings hidden yet recoverable from the text). The authoress of the present article perceives in the ontological incompleteness of fiction an instance of absolute, irrecoverable emptiness, whereas the idea of the text as an inferential machine, which through hints and suggestions prompts the reader to fill in the gaps (the case of concretisation in Ingarden's terminology) squares with her idea of the emptiness that tends toward an ultimate, if only partial completion. One of tenets of this paper is also the gamesome, ludic character of the activity of gap-filling. The completion of empty spaces in texts / discourses is a prototypical pragmatic game of the reader, critic or translator - their quite automatic answer to the authorial move of saturating the text with gaps (the term saturation or density of gaps has been borrowed from Dolezel 1995).

Ewald Palmetshofer is an Austrian dramatist of the younger generation (born in 1978) who has recently been gaining more and more recognition from both the audience and critics, in Austria as well as in Germany. In his play hamlet is dead. no gravity (which had its world premiere in 2007 at the Schauspielhaus Vienna) he tries to dissect a modern family life on the brink of collapse. Palmetshofer’s characters are struggling in a world without God, in which heaven is only a “machine” and traditional values such as love, mutual trust and respecting your elders are being forgotten. These are being replaced by antagonism, frustration and egoism. This article is an attempt to analyze the play.

The aim of this paper was to estimate the gender wage gap in Poland and in the 16 NUTS2 Polish regions in 2010, and to verify the predictions of the spatial monopsony model for Poland with a newly created, harmonized database for wages of individuals in Poland. According to the model, the unexplained part of the gender wage gap, identified with wage discrimination, tend to be lower in regions with more competition between employers. The results of the analyses performed in this paper show that in more urbanized regions the average wages are higher than in the rural ones. In each of the 16 NUTS2 Polish regions, women earn less than men. Raw differences in wages between men and women are largest in the most urbanized regions but a significant part of the differences in those regions can be explained by differences in workers’ characteristics, especially by different sectoral structure of employment. The part of the gender wage gap which remains unexplained, and in the literature is commonly attached to discrimination, is the highest in rural regions of Eastern Poland in line with the predictions of the spatial monopsony model

Celem artykułu jest określenie wpływu metody szacunku średniego wynagrodzenia na wielkość oraz kierunek luki płacowej w Polsce w ujęciu regionalnym. Luka płacowa pomiędzy mężczyznami a kobietami jest negatywnym zjawiskiem badanym i opisywanym w coraz szerszym kontekście. Środowiska naukowe oraz praktycy polityki społecznej wykształcili metody pozwalające na pomiar wielkości luki. Metodologia stosowana przez organy Unii Europejskiej dostarcza tzw. nieskorygowanych szacunków luki płacowej, czyli takich, które nie uwzględniają indywidualnych cech mężczyzn i kobiet. W artykule zaprezentowano szacunki luki płacowej według województw, uzyskane dzięki metodologii europejskiej z wykorzystaniem ośmiu różnych wielkości charakteryzujących przeciętne wynagrodzenia osiągane przez mężczyzn i kobiety.
The aim of the paper is to determine the impact of average pay estimation on the size and direction of the pay gap in Poland in regional terms. The pay gap between men and women is a negative phenomenon that has been analysed and described in an increasingly broader context. Scientific communities and social policy practitioners have developed methods for measuring the size of the gap. The methodology used by the bodies of the European Union allows researchers to obtain the so called unadjusted wage gap estimates, i.e. ones that do not take into account the individual characteristics of men and women. The paper presents the wage gap estimates by province, calculated on the basis of the European methodology, with the use of eight different variables which characterise the average pay earned by men and women.

Opis:

International comparisons reveal that – even controlling for a host of explanatory factors – credit depth is exceptionally low in Mexico. Using panel data methods linking credit growth and fundamentals, this paper estimates a long-term gap between actual and expected credit of about 40 percent of GDP. Possible explanations include the history of banking crises, the large informal sector and an inefficient legal system. Using a disequilibrium regression approach, this paper also finds that supply factors are particularly important as determinants of credit in Mexico. Recent financial reforms address many of the supply constraints, but their success will depend on implementation. The main challenge going forward will be to support financial deepening, while limiting risks to financial stability.

This research investigates the level of the gender pay gap and gender parity in the Visegrad Group countries in light of the changes that took place in the whole EU during the last decade. The following hypotheses accompany the research objective: (1) the level of the gender pay gap diminished significantly over the last decade in the V4 economies; (2) the V4 countries are following a path to achieve gender parity. Data were taken from Eurostat. The pay gap and the managerial occupations indicators were used to verify the research hypotheses. The empirical investigation did not let us reject the first hypothesis for Poland only. However, it should be rejected for the other V4 economies. In addition, the second hypothesis should be rejected.

Opis:

In the present work, we investigate theoretically the transmission characteristics of one-dimensional photonic crystals that contain a defect layer of a nanocomposite material in infrared radiation. The theoretical treatment is obtained depending on the fundamentals of the characteristic matrix method. Here, the nanocomposite designed from nanoparticles of a superconducting material is arranged into a dielectric medium. The numerical results clarify the acute effect of the volume fraction and the operating temperature on the effective permittivity of the nanocomposite material. Therefore, the volume fraction, the operating temperature and other parameters such as the permittivity of the dielectric material and the threshold frequency could have a significant effect on the characteristics of the defect modes. Thus, our structure may be very promising in many applications such as narrow band filters and among optoelectronic applications.

Cellular stress responses determine tissue development, homeostasis and pathogenesis. Paracrine signaling, exchange of mechanical stimuli and intercellular transfer of small metabolites via connexin-built gap junctional channels are involved in the cellular stress detection and propagation of stress stimuli in multicellular networks. Cellular stress responses are also regulated through the activity of unpaired connexons (hemichannels) and via the intracellular interference of connexins with the cell cycle and pro-apoptotic machinery. Therefore, connexins are considered as multidirectional transmitters of the "outside-in" and "inside-out" stress signaling that are crucial for tissue homeostasis, regeneration and pathology. In particular, the disturbance of connexin function during the multi-stage process of tumor development leads to abnormal reactions of tumor cells to stress stimuli. In this review, we outline the current knowledge on the multidirectional role of connexins in the detection of stress signals. We also discuss the role of connexin-mediated intercellular transmittance of stress signals in tumour promotion, progression and metastatic cascade. Highlights: 1. Connexins and gap junctions protect cells from the microenvironmental stress and are involved in propagation and intracellular processing of stress signals. 2. The quality and quantity of stress stimuli, which may lead to cell adaptation or death by apoptosis, is determined by intrinsic properties of connexins and the cell phenotype. 3. Connexin deficiency increases the resistance of tumor cells to the "outside-in" stress signaling. 4. The connexin-mediated "inside-out" stress signaling participates in tumor cell invasion during the metastatic cascade.

Opis:

GAP and HTPB are polymers on which the copolymer obtained in our work is based. The following report indicates how to perform the polymerization reactions for these two polymers in order to obtain a copolymer that combines their individual positive physico-chemical properties. It demonstrates how the ratio of substrates and reaction conditions affect the polymer properties. It has been shown that increasing the amount of epichlorohydrin attached to HTPB significantly affects the copolymer viscosity. This has a later effect on polymer processing, as well as on the hydroxyl values being too low. This is important for the subsequent production of polyurethanes. Analysis of the results allows the reaction conditions to be designed so as to generate a polymer with the best properties. The reactions were carried out in two stages. The first stage was the connection of polyepichlorohydrin (PECH) to HTPB, and the second was azidation of the resultant PECH-HTPB-PECH copolymer. The influence of the amount of epichlorohydrin attached to HTPB on the copolymer properties (e.g. viscosity) was demonstrated. Analysis of the second stage, the preparation of the GAP-HTPB-GAP copolymer (by azidation of the PECH-HTPB-PECH copolymer), showed that the nitrogen content in the copolymer has a significant effect on the viscosity and heat of polymer combustion.

Opis:

A new energetic glycidyl-based polymer containing nitramine groups (glycidyl nitramine polymer, GNAP) was synthesized using glycidyl azide polymer (GAP) as the starting material. The synthesis involved Staudinger azide-amine conversion, followed by carbamate protection of the amino group, nitration with nitric acid (100%) and trifluoroacetic anhydride and was concluded by deprotection with aqueous ammonia. The products obtained were characterized by elemental analysis and vibrational spectroscopy (IR). The energetic properties of GNAP were determined using bomb calorimetric measurements and calculated with the EXPLO5 V6.02 computer code, showing better values regarding the energy of explosion (ΔEU = −4813 kJ kg−1), the detonation velocity (VDet = 7165 m•s−1), as well as the detonation pressure (pCJ = 176 kbar), than the comparable polymers GAP and polyGLYN. The explosion properties were tested by impact sensitivity (IS), friction sensitivity (FS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and electrostatic discharge (ESD) equipment. The results revealed GNAP to be insensitive towards friction and electrostatic discharge, less sensitive towards impact (40 J) and a decomposition temperature (170 °C) in the range of polyGLYN.

Research background: Recently there has been an increase in interest in the studies of income inequalities. The findings of numerous empirical studies show that males earn higher wages than females. A variety of techniques of income inequalities decomposition are becoming popular. New procedures go far beyond the Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition. They allow to study differences of income distributions for various groups of people and to decompose them at various quantile points. Purpose of the article: The aim of the paper is to compare personal income distributions in selected countries of the European Union, taking into account gender differences. Methods: First, we examined the income inequalities between men and women in each country using the Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition procedure. The unexplained part of the gender pay gap gave us information about the wage discrimination. Second, we extended the decomposition procedure to different quantile points along the whole income distribution. To describe differences between the incomes of men and women, we constructed the so-called counterfactual distribution, which is a mixture of a conditional distribution of the dependent variable (income) and a distribution of the explanatory variables (individual people?s characteristics). Then, we utilized the residual imputation approach (JMP-approach). Findings & Value added: In the article data from EU-SILC (Statistics on Income and Living Conditions) were used. We found that there exists an important diversity in the size of the gender pay gap across members of the European Union. The results obtained for these countries allowed us to group them into clusters. In general, there are two types of countries in Europe: the countries, where the bulk of the observed income differences cannot be explained by observed characteristics, and the countries, where the explained and the unexplained effects are both positive, with even a bigger explained effect for the lower income ranges.

Opis:

In this article we study the optical properties of ZnO nanoparticles. This paper describes cost effective, high yield, and a facile synthetic method for the synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles from precursors viz. linear polysaccharide, chitosan, and ZnCl₂ by a precipitation method. The synthesized ZnO nanoparticles were characterized by surface area, pore size, and UV-visible measurements. The optical band gap and the Urbach energy were also calculated and the optical band gap energy of the synthesized ZnO nanoparticles was found to be 3.26 eV and the nature of the optical transition has been identified as direct allowed.

Opis:

Opracowano warunki otrzymywania monokryształów fosforku galu (GaP) o średnicy 4" i orientacji < 100 > oraz < 111 >. Skonstruowano układy termiczne dla urządzenia MarkIV, w których można otrzymywać metodą Czochralskiego z herme-tyzacją cieczową (LEC - Liąuid Encapsulated Czochralski) duże monokryształy GaP. Zbadano termiczne warunki wzrostu kryształów. Doświadczalnie określono wpływ niektórych elementów układu termicznego na kształt pola temperatur w obszarze wzrostu kryształów. Otrzymano monokryształy GaP o średnicy 4" i orientacji < 100 > oraz < 111 >. Zbadano ich własności elektryczne i strukturalne.
Technological parameters for growing 4"(GaP) single crystals in < 100 > and < 111 > direction were investigated. Thermal systems were constructed for MarklV puller, which allow growing GaP single crystals with big diameter by Liquid Encapsulated Czochralski method. The influence of some of the thermal system elements on the temperature field near the growing crystal was experimentally assessed. GaP crystals of 4" in diameter were obtained in < 100 > and < 111 > direction. Electrical and structural parameters were assessed.

In this paper were presented the results of the application of quasi-simulation methods to analysis the impact of the occurrence of systematic gaps on the accuracy of inter and extrapolative forecasts for time series with seasonal fluctuations. Forecasts were built on the basis of predictors based on descriptive models with seasonally changing parameters. Theoretical considerations will be illustrated by the empirical example. The models estimation and construction of inter- and extrapolative forecasts were done with R and Statistica 10.
