    In this article I consider a certain characteristic of our times as a “secular age,” namely, a series of complications in our understanding of transgression. Transgression implies the presence of some rules and laws which can be violated. As long as the rules and laws are perceived as right, as a way of protecting the values which would otherwise perish, transgression appears to be a wrong thing to do, a misdeed, a criminal act. Needless to say, the very conceptual structure makes sense only provided that the distinctions between right and wrong, good and evil, lawful and lawless are not arbitrary, which, in turn, depends on the presence of the concept of truth. In the secular age, though, the concept of truth becomes not only difficult to handle, since it is incompatible with the modern frame of mind, but also assumes some derogatory connotations, up to the point when to insist on the distinction between (truly) right and (truly) wrong is in itself a wrong thing to do. That is the state of contemporary societies which G. K. Chesterton examines in his work Heretics. The effect of Chesterton’s reflections is a new map of right/wrong, good/evil, lawless/lawful permutations. After Chesterton, I comment on the character of a new heretic, one for whom transgression, understood as the attack on buried-for-long orthodoxy, is too easy a thing to do. To illustrate the mentioned changes of perspective, I refer to an exemplary criminal figure of the West, that is, the biblical serpent, and its criticism.

    Opis:
    Based on the work of Gilbert Keith Chesterton and Clive Staples Lewis, the author analyzes the role of humor in the Christian spirituality and the connection between humor and other values such as love, humility, freedom and truth. One of the conclusions is that both writers regarded and showed humor as an indicator, of the authenticity and depth are lived and realized in the above mentioned values.
    Na podstawie twórczości Gilberta Keitha Chestertona i Clive’a Staplesa Lewisa autor analizuje rolę humoru w duchowości chrześcijanina i związek humoru z wybranymi wartościami: pokorą, miłością, wolnością i prawdą. Jednym z wniosków jest ten, że obaj tytułowi pisarze uważali i ukazywali humor jako rodzaj indykatora, który wskazuje, z jaką autentycznością i głębią są przeżywane i realizowane wymienione wartości.

    Part of Chesterton’s imagery that he often employs in his writing is the motif of light and darkness, which in The Ball and the Cross takes the form of the cycle of night and day. This cycle dictates a specific rhythm, which rules over both the ongoing duel and other events. Thus, the evening and night time is rather reserved for considerable and profound insights, found in, for instance, the opening and closing scenes and in all the events that reflect or decide about the characters’ spiritual growth. The day time seems to contribute more to the development of the protagonists’ relationship with each other and the world around.
    Pojawiający się często w metaforyce Chestertona motyw światła i ciemności, w powieści Kula i krzyż przybiera formę cyklu dnia i nocy. Cykl ten narzuca fabule określony rytm, który rządzi zarówno toczącym się pojedynkiem głównych bohaterów, jak i innymi wydarzeniami. Czas wieczorny i nocny jest raczej przeznaczony dla istotnych i głębokich refleksji, które pojawiają się na przykład w pierwszej i ostatniej scenie powieści oraz w trakcie innych wydarzeń decydujących o rozwoju duchowym bohaterów. Wydaje się, że czas dzienny bardziej sprzyja rozwojowi relacji łączącej ich ze sobą i światem zewnętrznym.

    The paper is concerned with shifts of cohesion and coherence in several Polish translations of G. K. Chesterton from the point of view of the procedural approach, in which the choice of particular linguistic/textual devices is indicative of the text producer’s intended meaning. As regards cohesion, the paper touches upon lexical cohesion and conjunction. It discusses the eff ects of replacing repetition with variation, and of disambiguating and explicating conjunctions. As for coherence, an analysis is carried out which shows how the translator’s failure to render a polysemous word adequately detracted from the TT’s coherence. Also, an example is given of coherence being affected by polysemy in the TT. The aim of the paper is to find out what kind of issues and regularities connected with cohesion and coherence emerge in the translation process and how these affect target texts.

    Opis:
    Aleksander Wat’s novella The Wandering Jew, published in 1926, is his only prose text in which the Jewish motif is the very center of the narrative. Wat carefully avoids dramatic or frightening notes, staying away from the characters created by Potocki, Quinet, Schubart, and Meyrink. However, certain aspects of the old version of the ancient myth remain: the millennial peregrination through history, the absolute solitude of the hero, and his magical movement and appearance in different parts of the world. The fusion of Catholicism and communism in the shadow of Marranism, represented by the protagonist Nathan, reflects grotesquely either on the phenomenon of Jewish youth fleeing the shtetls observed by young Wat, or on his own ecumenical dreams and reflections on the metahistorical role of Jews and their conversion. The article analyzes this issue also with particular regard either to the reception of the old Christian legend, or to the Anti-semitic narrative on the conspiracy of Jewish converts, shared by Keith Gilbert Chesterton, a contemporary writer very important for Wat.

    The main aim of this article is to present Chestertonian idea of the tradition as the democracy of the dead. This idea is also critically compare with the political ideas of Hans-Georg Gadamer and John D. Caputo. The article consists of four main parts. The first part contains a reconstruction of Chesterton’s reflection on democracy of the dead, which inclusiveness do not let to forget the voices of our ancestors. In the second part the thought of Chesterton is polemically juxtaposed with philosophical ideas of Hans-Georg Gadamer, who pointed out the need for constant updating of the tradition to the contemporary requirements. Third part contains a critique of the Chestertonian ideas carried out in the spirit of John D. Caputo’s radical hermeneutics. One of the main goal of this hermeneutics is breaking the unity of tradition. In the fourth part they are presented concrete examples of the struggle of Polish (the construction of the Temple of Divine Providence) and Swiss (debate on changing the national anthem) democracy with the traditions of their ancestors.
