    In one of his plays entitled Hölderlin Alfonso Vallejo establishes direct and indirectconnections with life and poetry of romantic poet Friedrich Hölderlin. We analyse traces one author in writings of another using the theory of anxiety of influence by Harold Bloom. The process of self-understanding and comprehension of the art leads, according to Bloom, through a number of stages: clinamen, tessera, kenosis, demonisation, askesis and apophrades. We try to detect techniques used by Vallejo in his artistic pattern and determine what are aesthetic and formal consequences of his endeavor.

    Artykuł omawia sposoby ukazywania światła i ciemności w wybranych utworach niemieckich poetów przełomu osiemnastego i dziewiętnastego wieku: Friedricha Hölderlina i Georga Ph.F. Freiherra von Hardenberga (pseud. Novalis). Wychodząc od sposobu rozumienia światła u Platona i ukazując inne źródła poetyckiej inspiracji romantyków (neoplatonizm, alchemię, nauki empiryczne, teozofię Jakoba Böhmego czy idealizm subiektywny Johanna G. Fichtego), uwzględniając przy tym realizację koncepcji światła w malarstwie Philippa O. Rungego i Caspara D. Friedricha, autorka analizuje związki poszczególnych utworów literackich z Faustem Goethego. Przeprowadzone analizy ukazują, że ciemność traktowana jest przez Novalisa i Hölderlina jako okoliczność towarzysząca spotkaniu z transcendentną rzeczywistością oraz przeciwstawiana charyzmatycznemu oślepieniu i poetyckiej inspiracji. Zainteresowanie Hölderlina i Novalisa filozofią Fichtego oraz przeniesienie – w ich poetyckim przekazie – wszystkich doświadczeń do świadomości owocuje zniwelowaniem opozycji między światem idei a codziennością, a także między światłem a ciemnością.
    The present article discusses the issues of darkness and light in selected works by Friedrich Hölderlin and Georg Philipp Friedrich Freiherr von Hardenberg (Novalis), notable German poets of the turn of the 19th century. The author considers Plato’s concept of light and other sources of Romantic inspiration in poetry, such as Neoplatonism, alchemy, empirical sciences, Jakob Böhme’s theosophy, and Johann G. Fichte’s subjective idealism, as well as the ways light is portrayed in paintings by Philipp O. Runge and Caspar D. Friedrich. Against this background, the author analyzes the motifs of light and darkness appearing in selected poems by Hölderlin and Novalis in order to refer them to Johann W. von Goethe’s Faust. The author observes that, according to Novalis and Hölderlin, darkness necessarily accompanies the encounter of a human being with the transcendent reality. Both poets also draw a contrast between metaphysical darkness and the charismatic blindness caused by poetic inspiration. Hölderlin’s and Novalis’s interest in Fichte’s philosophy, as well as their tendency to transfer – in the poetic message – all the experiences to the consciousness, reconciles the world of ideas with that of everyday life, as well as light with darkness.     Trzęsienie ziemi w Lizbonie w roku 1755 uchodzi za wydarzenie, które zmieniło losy świata. Zmieniło także utrwaloną na chrześcijańskim Zachodzie wiarę w Bożą opatrzność i przekonanie o prawdziwości religijnej wizji świata. Niektórych filozofów utwierdziło ono w sceptycyzmie wobec tak zwanego optymizmu Leibniza. Od połowy osiemnastego wieku zmienia się w literaturze niemieckiej sposób mówienia o Bogu i boskości, także w kontekście „kryzysu optymizmu”, który miał wówczas nastąpić.
    The 1755 Lisbon earthquake is considered an event that changed the course of world history. It also changed the belief in the Divine Providence popular in the Christian West and confirmed some philosophers in their skeptical opinion on the so-called Leibnizian optimism. In mid-18th century German writers changed their way of speaking about God and Divinity, which was in part conditioned by the ‘optimism crisis’ characteristic of the period in question.     In Hölderlins ‚tragischer Ode‘ Chiron drückt sich im Schmerz des unheilbar verwundeten Kentauren ein persönliches wie auch ein allgemeines Leiden aus. Vers für Vers ergründet der Aufsatz Chirons ‚Innenwelt‘ und analysiert dabei Hölderlins intensitätsbasierte poetische Verfahrensweise. Der Fokus liegt auf dem Spannungs- und Entwicklungsbogen, der Hölderlins Konzept des ‚Tragischen‘ widerspiegelt. Seine Poetik kreist um Trennung und Vereinigung, um die progressive Integration von Gegensätzlichem und um die Notwendigkeit von semantischen Leerstellen.
    In Holderlin’s ‘tragic ode’ Chiron, the pain of the incurably wounded centaur serves to express both personal and general suffering. The article explores Chiron’s ‘inner world’ line by line, thereby analysing Holderlin’s poetic method. It focuses on the arc of suspense and development, reflecting the author’s concept of ‘the tragic’. His poetics is rooted in separation and reunification, the progressive integration of the opposites, and the essential role of semantic openness.
