Opis:
The contribution examines how the paradigms of historical, conflict, contact and ecolinguistics respectively shed different light on the relation between German and French as neighbouring languages. Historical linguistics sees the neighbourly language contacts as the result of bellicose and societal interferences; conflict linguistics centres on tensions and dominance behaviour between governments and linguistic enclaves or linguistic minorities. Contact linguistics takes account of the fact that any change in neighbourly language situations could also be seen as the result of conflict-free societal changes. Ecolinguistics follows this perspective on frame conditions – instead of historically important events – still more thoroughly, and its research focus on „linguistic landscape“ exposes bilingual landscapes as compensation for the loss of bilingualism. The survey shows after all that conflict linguistics is not the only fertile description of neighbourly language relations.

The author presents her current research project dealing with the argumentation of written interactions that appeared in cyberspace. They focus on the activities of the artist, humorist, political activist Dieudonné M’Bala M’Bala in France and, in Poland, around the activities of the journalist, philo-semitic performer Rafal Betlejewski. The common point of these discourses is that they trigger argumentative mechanisms that are part of the anti-Semitic attitudes of the interacting subjects. It demonstrates how the methodologies of French-speaking linguists can be useful for the argumentative analysis of such a difficult textual corpus.

The observations described in this páper are concemed with the linguistic discourse analysis carried out by representatives of the contemporary French school, the members o f which include among others: Jean-Michel Adam, Patrick Charaudeau, Catherine Kerbrat-Orecchioni, and Dominique Maingueneau (some of them come from Swiss and Belgian French-speaking communities). The domain of their research, the most impor- tant traditions, as well as the sources of inspiration and relations between the examined field with other scientific disciplines (not only linguistics) are the principál subjects un- der discussion in this páper. The achievements o f the French school in the area o f dis course analysis prove the integrative naturę of the disciplině, which combines various fields of study o f language, style and text, that is in particular: stylistics (including rhetoric and the theory o f a literary work of art), pragmatics and text linguistics. The author demonstrates also the significance o f the relations between discourse analysis and other Sciences: philosophy, cognítive science, psychology and sociology, at the same time emphasizing that the broadly defined inlerdisciplinary studies remain (for various reasons) in the sphere of postulates. Among the many obstacles is the separation of sociál Sciences in the 20lh century.

It is a well-known fact that the etymology of the French lexicon is mostly Latin. But this apparently obvious consideration hides a signifi cant amount of unsure, if not biased, etymologies. This paper aims fi rst at criticizing the laxity of the etymological method : use of reconstructed vulgar Latin and old Frankish etymons upon unclear principles, huge distortions of meaning, phonetic irregularities, ignorance of the historical context, etc. In a second time, this paper aims at showing that the neglected Gaulish substratum can sometimes afford better explanations to some of these doubtful and impressionistic etymologies, and proposes new etymologies based upon attested Gaulish etymons.

The purpose of the present article is a contrastive analysis of the verbs and verbal forms expressing the spatial situation in the Pericope Adulterae from the point of view of their translations into Polish and French starting from the original Greek biblical text. The author presents the general context of the pericope, its controversial place in the Gospel of John as well as its construction and its linguistic specificities. Starting from the original text of this biblical passage, then are listed the Greek verbs which express a spatial situation and are subjected to the analysis from the point of view of their forms and their meaning. According to the Polish and French translations chosen from this evangelical episode, the author proceeds to the comparison of the proposed equivalents and presents the comments which ensue. The analysis of translations demonstrates that some of the equivalents are analogous for two or all of the three languages, and some are typical only to one of the three languages.

Opis:
The efficiency of pronunciation training in the classroom in French learners of German was studied. To this end the German vowel length contrast and word initial [h] productions were examined. For this purpose, a speech corpus was compiled, which contains recordings of the learners’ speech assignments over a university semester. Acoustic analyses of the speech productions indicated that French learners of German showed progress over the semester only for word initial [h] at the beginning of words, while their productions of the German vowel length contrast neither improved nor worsened.

The article attempts to provide an explanation why the English legal language is so complex and so difficult to understand especially for the lay people. Also mentioned are the attempts that have been made to simplify it. The paper also describes its development throughout history. It maintains that legal English is the result of history and political and social processes ongoing in the given historical period. This language is basically the reflection of the social and political conditions of the given historical period, and each period has left its mark on the current form of the language at issue. It reflects the influence of Anglo-Saxon mercenaries, Latinspeaking missionaries, Scandinavian and Norman war tribes. As it is highlighted further in the text, English has been used in various types of legal documents at different times. Last wills and testaments started to be drafted in English around 1400. Laws were written in Latin until around 1300, in French until about 1485, in English and French for a few more years and exclusively in English since 1489. The paper contains a number of the words and expressions related to law which are used even today and provides their etymology, at least as far the language of its origin is concerned. Also provided are expressions that were replaced with new ones, simpler, more understandable legal terms within reforms.

Le thème de notre contribution,  conçue dans la perspective de la grammaire de construction, est à la fois contrastif et diachronique. Nous nous intéressons, après beaucoup d’autres linguistes, au comportement syntaxique des verbes d’un certain groupe constitué selon des critères sémantiques : les verbes de perception (entendre, voir, etc.). Contrairement à notre attente, les possibilités syntaxiques de ces verbes ne sont pas identiques. Ainsi, il apparaît rapidement que le verbe observer a tendance à faire bande à part. Nous essayerons, d’une part, de comprendre les raisons de ce statut spécial, d’autre part, de voir dans quelle mesure l’acceptabilité de la phrase avec observer peut être améliorée par une action sur d’autres paramètres de la phrase. Cette recherche nous permet d’identifier le rôle important d’un facteur que la rhétorique classique appelait evidentia.
This paper explores perception verbs (like ‘hear’ and ‘see’) from a construction grammar perspective, with a focus on both contrastive and diachronic aspects. Surprisingly, our corpus analysis suggests that different verbs from this semantic groups do not display a homogeneous syntactic behaviour. For example the verb ‘observer’ stands out from other verbs in this group. We attempt to account for the special status of ‘observer’ and discuss the extent to which the acceptability of sentences featuring ‘observer’ can be improved by acting on certain parameters in the sentence. Our research highlights the role of a factor referred to as evidentia in classical rhetoric.

Dans cet article, nous présentons et analysons les verbes supports intensifs appliqués aux principaux noms prédicatifs de la classe <colère> en ancien français et en ancien espagnol. Nous décrivons cette combinatoire lexicale restreinte et nous identifions les métaphores de base qui orientent la sélection des formules intensives. Nous observons qu’un point de vue synchronique tendrait à privilégier une description des collocations axée sur la sélection lexicale, tandis que la perspective diachronique favoriserait la prise en compte des métaphores conceptuelles. Nous signalons les coïncidences entre les deux langues étudiées, mais nous relevons, également, quelques spécificités de l’une et de l’autre.
The intensive support verbs selected by the predicative nouns of the class <anger> in Old French and Old Spanish are presented and analyzed in this paper. The lexically constrained combinations between these verbs and nouns are described, and the basic metaphors that govern the selection of intensive structures are identified. We observe that a synchronic perspective would prefer a lexical selection-based description of collocations, whereas a diachronic perspective would prefer the use of conceptual metaphors. We highlight certain similarities between the two languages studied, but also some differences.
