    The aim of this article is to present the selected findings of the research carried out over the last decade on the situation of foreign pupils undergoing their education in Polish schools. The thesis being verified is that due to the lack of intercultural competencies of teachers, the educational institutions are not able to deal with the rising problems. Final conclusions point the necessity of changes in teacher training programs.

    There is no doubt that migration, especially when involving whole family units, posits a range of challenges, dilemmas and problems. Thus, raising a child while adapting to a new sociocultural environment can turn out to be a particularly demanding task. Drawing on the findings of longitudinal, qualitative research among 10 families of Russian and Ukrainian origin living in the Czech Republic, the paper discusses the concept of parenting with a special emphasis on the issue of education. An important circumstance is the fact that the research sample consists of parents with tertiary education. The paper aims to describe and analyse the way in which parents understand upbringing and education, and what their beliefs and subsequent behaviours in this area are based on. Much attention is focused on uncovering how the ideological and practical dimensions of parental concern interact with the post-migration experience and processes associated with it. The empirical part, based on qualitative analysis inspired by grounded theory research design, depicts the issue as a very complex area of diverse and sometimes contradictory tendencies that dynamically combines deeply- rooted parenting patterns with pragmatic responses to current conditions.

    Poland is about to face social changes caused by a huge number of refugees and immigrants heading towards Europe. Not all of them come from societies whose culture is close to ours. The crisis of the peaceful idea of coexistence of cultures ((Multikulti) inspires us to analyse the European experience in the process of building integrated society and to draw conclusions. In this way we can avoid repeating some mistakes of other countries. In this situation, education must be a strong foundation of a state policy.

    Przybierające współcześnie na sile procesy migracyjne sprawiają, że szczególnego znaczenia nabiera realizacja oddziaływań służących włączaniu „Innych” etnicznie, narodowo, religijnie i językowo. Jak wskazują statystyki, w Polsce rośnie liczba osób przyjeżdżających z innych krajów; zwiększa się także liczba uczniów cudzoziemskich, wymagających wdrożenia oddziaływań uwzględniających posiadaną przez nich wiedzę, umiejętności i kompetencje. Łączy się to z właściwą organizacją procesów dydaktyczno-wychowawczych oraz przygotowaniem społeczności klasy i szkoły na przyjęcie „Innych”. Tego typu działania realizowane powinny być na wszystkich szczeblach edukacyjnych, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem etapu szkoły podstawowej i gimnazjalnej. W związku z tym w niniejszym artykule szczególnej refleksji poddano kwestię działań służących wspomaganiu ucznia przeżywającego trudności adaptacyjne wiążące się z różnicami kulturowymi w placówkach edukacyjnych. W planowaniu i wcielaniu w życie opisywanych tu działań pomocne staje się wskazanie oferty „dobrych praktyk” zawartych w publikacjach metodycznych, w tym: wskazówek przydatnych w pracy w wielokulturowej szkole. Wiąże się to z ujęciem ważnych dla nauczycieli i uczniów kompetencji niezbędnych do przyjęcia otwartych postaw wobec „Innego”, wskazania zasad odnoszących się do komunikacji w grupie wielokulturowej, a także zapobiegania dyskryminacji społecznej. W tym względzie pomocna może okazać się także proponowana między innymi przez organizacje pozarządowe oferta wykładów, warsztatów i szkoleń służących kształtowaniu kompetencji umożliwiających pokojowe współbycie z „Innymi” w społeczności szkoły.
    The rise of migration is a reason why a particularly important thing is the inclusion of national, ethnic, religious and linguistic minorities. According to statistics, in Poland there is a growing number of people coming from other countries; the number of foreign students is constantly increasing. We must take action to take account of the different knowledge, skills and competence of these pupils. Schools in Poland are conducting various activities concerning the educational process. The most important thing is also the preparation of class communities and schools to adopt “Others”. This “Move for Inclusion” should be implemented at all levels of education, with the particular emphasis on the early period of primary school and secondary school. The issue in this article are activities which support the student with the difficulties of adaptive binding because of cultural differences in school. An important factor is also the identification of the offer of “good practices” contained in publications about multicultural society, including useful tips on working in schools. The crucial aspect is the recognition of the competence necessary to adopt an open attitude towards “the Other” and postulated rules relating to communication among multicultural as well as preventing social discrimination. In this regard, it may be helpful to recognize the offer of NGOs: lectures, workshops and training courses. They are a tool to facilitate the peaceful development of special competencies to being-with the “Other”.

    The article researches the pupils’ attitude towards the role of the teacher in the educational process which is revealed through the students-teacher relationships. The study showed that the students appreciate the professional pedagogical and special pedagogical competencies of the foreign language teachers the highest talking of learning and training objectives formulation, the interpretation of training material, the incentive of improvement. Also, students usually appreciate teachers’ personal characteristics positively, emphasizing tactful teacher’ behaviour, patience, objectivity, sense of humour and appropriate speaking tone. Moreover, it turned out that the schoolchildren feel less secure talking of interaction with teachers: they usually turn to the teachers only for subject matters; they do not always feel free in the classroom. Because of a fear to make a mistake the students do not want to express their views openly as they are not always sure that their opinion is important for their teachers.
