Opis:
Aim: Food security is a multi-dimensional issue and is concerned with aspects such as availability, access and utilisation. It would require major interventions that will transform the current patterns and practices of food production, distribution and consumption. Food security can be attained by increasing the level of agricultural productivity and efficiency and improvements in agricultural efficiency are at the core of the quest for food security. This paper seeks to examine the efficiency in food grains production in India for the period 1960-61 to 2013-14.   Design / Research methods: The key idea is to employ the non-parametric Data Envelopment Analysis and the parametric Stochastic Frontier Analysis to measure the efficiency of food grains production in India. We have estimated an input oriented single output, multi – input DEA models (CRS – DEA and VRS- DEA) of agricultural production to measure the efficiency in food grains production for two time periods 1960-61 to 1989-90 and 1991-92 to 2013-14. The analysis of super efficiency was conducted for both these time periods helped identify the years in which food grains production was most efficient.   Conclusions / findings: We find high average efficiency in farming operations for both the frontier methods. However, the range of efficiency obtained varies considerably for the different frontier methods. The period after 1990 has witnessed improved agricultural performance as can be inferred from the frequency distribution of the efficiency scores which indicates that during this period the overall efficiency scores have been higher and there was not a single year in which the efficiency levels have been less than 0.9. The analysis of super efficiency also vindicates the improved performance of the agricultural sector in the post 1990 periods as greater number of years recorded an efficiency score greater than 1 as compared to the previous period. However, the super efficiency scores recorded in the period 1961-1990 were higher than those in the post 1990 years suggesting thereby that there could be a tapering of the positive impact of the Green Revolution. Efficiency estimates obtained by the SFA model are marginally lower than that of the DEA model and the results of the SFA model indicate net sown area, net irrigated area and pesticides to be statistically significant inputs.   Originality / value of the article: This study contributes significantly to the literature on efficiency measurement of agricultural production in India by focussing on efficiency measurement of food grains. Most studies focus on farm level data and /or on individual crops. Implications of the research: This results of this study have implications for the issue of food security in India. Its results indicate that a need to expand irrigation facilities and net sown area to improve efficiency in food grain production which is vital for the issue of food security.

Opis:
This study was carried out to estimate the extent of food security and its determinants among rural households in Nigeria. Data for this study was obtained from 180 rural households consisting of 1260 members through the use of a structured questionnaire. Data was analyzed with a descriptive technique and a less restrictive multinomial logistic regression model. The result found most rural households to be food insecure as they measure high on the food insecurity scale. Age, gender, marital status, access to credit, dependency ratio, household size, ownership of farmland and farming experience significantly influence food security categories. The study concluded that: female-headed married households were more food secure than male-headed households; an increase in age of household heads makes it more likely to be food secure, and so does access to credit facilities; conversely, an increase in family size and in the dependency ratio makes it less likely to be food secure. The study recommends that there should be provision and proper monitoring of credit facilities to small farmers in other to increase their scale of operation and improve their food security status. Also, adequate attention should be given to policy measures that address family planning in order to reduce the household size to a level the household heads can adequately cater for.

Food constitutes the basic human need. Changes in the modern world indicate that the problem of food security will steadily grow in importance in the future. The key question is therefore how to provide it, how to governance it in a dynamically changing world under the globalization processes. The article deals with the problem of global governance of food security. Its main assumption is that the globalization processes create the qualitatively new environment of food security global governance. The analysis permits three conclusions. First, as a consequence of the globalization processes, the way food security is perceived has changed while the problem itself becomes complex and multi-dimensional, which increases demand for new forms of its governance. Second, under the influence of the globalization processes, the responsibility for ensuring food security extends over an increasingly large group of actors and requires coordinated actions taking an increasingly broad group of so-called stakeholders into consideration. Third, globalization processes stimulate the formulation and development of paradigms and strategies for food security, offering an ‘infrastructure’ and creating their intellectual foundation as in the case of the free-market model, as well as offering an ‘infrastructure’ and being the point of reference, in opposition to which alternative proposals are developed, such as food self-sufficiency and food sovereignty

Food constitutes the basic human need. Without food it is impossible to meet other needs. Changes in the modern world indicate that the problem of food security will steadily grow in importance in the future. The key question is therefore how to provide it, how to govern it. Despite its importance food security constitutes one of the less researched areas within international governance debate. It has never been ensured on the global level despite amazing progress of science and technology. What is more, the changing nature of threats to food security makes this goal even more distant. There are two contrasting views on that issue. In the first, the states are responsible for food security governance. This view is supported by the uniqueness of the agriculture, as a sector responsible for ensuring food. However, the growing limitations of states’ ability to decide on its own agriculture and food policy due to globalization processes make this vision disputable. According to the second view, in the face of globalization processes the best way to ensure it is to enhance the global food security governance. This vision also is confronted with criticisms, however, there are strong arguments which support it. The paper deals with the problem of food security governance. Its main assumption is that national governance becomes ineffective to address all food security dimensions under the globalization processes. That is why new modes are needed. The main argument of the paper is that the global governance model can fill the governance gap in food security area at the national level.

The purpose of this paper is to determine the effect of insect pollinators on the volume of food production in Poland, and thus to identify their role in ensuring the food security of the country. The object of the study was related to major entomophilous crop plants, i.e. rapeseed, fruit plants, fruit shrubs and permanent crops: fruit and berry plantations. The analyses were based on data from the Polish Central Statistical Office, the Institute of Horticulture, and subject literature. The results of the study indicate that insect pollinators play a key role in fruit production (absence of pollinators may result in a crop yield reduction ranging between 50% and 90%) and a signifi cant role in rapeseed production (a possible yield reduction of approx. 20–40%). In terms of physical availability of food, Polish food security would be preserved even in the absence of insect pollinators. However, at the level of economic availability, food security would not be preserved without such pollinators, particularly in terms of fruit and food security associated with the consumption of properly balanced rations.

The article assesses the food security of one region of Kazakhstan - the East Kazakhstan region. In the analyses, criteria such as the level of the region’s food independence, the degree of satisfaction of the population’s physiological needs in basic food, and the level of economic availability of food were applied. The research has shown that the food security in the East Kazakhstan region was at an acceptable level. However, some threats to food security were identified, including: a high level of income differentiation among the households of the East Kazakhstan region, an increase in the price index for food products, and a significant proportion of the population with incomes below the subsistence minimum. The results of the evaluation can be useful for creating agri-food policy measures that will ensure, maintain and improve the level of food security at both a regional and national level.

Food security is one of the main problems under the pandemic and climate change condition that we currently face. Managing peatland to fulfill community needs faces several problems including peat fire, GHG emissions and loss of biodiversity. Agroforestry is one of land use systems on peatland that is capable of accommodating different interests while still concerning the conservation purposes. This study aimed to assess the potential of agroforestry for ensuring the food security of local communities. This research was carried out in the Kalampangan Village, Palangka Raya City central Kalimantan for six months. This study used both quantitative and qualitative approaches, including interviews and field observations. Interviews were carried out with 13 farmers in Kalampangan who applied an agroforestry system. The data gathered included all agroforestry components and number of the food production component. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results showed three agroforestry types were applied by the Village community Kalampangan, namely agrosilviculture, agrosilvopasture, and agrofisheries. The biodiversity of agroforestry in Kalapangan is relatively high, with a total of 58 different species identified. A total of 86% of all agroforestry components are sources of food, including fruits, vegetables, seeds, tubers, spices and livestock. The information above shows that the peatland agroforestry in the Kalampangan Village has the potential to support food security while maintaining the biodiversity. Thus, agroforestry can be recommended as a peatland land use and rehabilitation strategies to accommodate the basic needs of local communities and increasing their prosperity.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of food insecurity among Lebanese University (Hadath Campus) students and examine its association with demographic characteristics, academic performance, body mass index (BMI), and household monthly income. Methods: A total of 755 participants that studied at Hadath Campus of Lebanese University were recruited for this study. The prevalence of food insecurity was assessed using a validated scale of 7 items: Arabic Family Food Security Scale (AFFSS). Findings:  Responses to the AFFSS indicated that 8.9% of students were food insecure, among which 7.5% and 1.4% were respectively moderately and severely food insecure.  Also, 91.1% were food secure. Food security status was significantly associated with age (p=0.001), family monthly allowance (p<0.001), weight (p=0.023), faculty (p=0.009) and BMI (p=0.04). Conclusion: The prevalence of food-insecure students was approximately 9% in the sample. Further studies are needed to measure food insecurity among Lebanese University students across the rest of the campuses in order to have enough evidence regarding the food insecurity level. Moreover, policies and programs must address food insecurity levels among students to ensure that all the resources are available for these students to succeed.

This study aims to analyse food sovereignty strategies in an effort to eradicate poverty in a micro-scale region by strengthening its food security status. The research was conducted in the Kutai Kartanegara District East Kalimantan Province in Indonesia. Food insecurity status in the study area was determined based on nine food security indicators. The 237 villages in the Kutai Kartanegara District were ranked based on four classifications of vulnerability to food insecurity. The results showed that 3.80% of the villages were highly vulnerable, 5.06% were vulnerable, 8.86% were slightly vulnerable and 82.28% were food secure. While Kutai Kartanegara was a food secure district, in order to maintain its food security status and enhance the performance of the villages that are still vulnerable to food insecurity, local government, and related stakeholders must work together to develop strategies to improve agricultural productivity, increase the region’s human resources capability and strengthen its infrastructure so food can be more readily accessed.

Opis:
A case study was conducted at Madhyanepal Municipality, Lamjung to access the food security status and the coping strategy of Dalit community. Information was collected from the 60 Dalit households through livelihood analysis, problem ranking and community discussion tools of participatory rural appraisal. The research revealed that the majority of the households (46.875%) have food sufficiency for less than 3 months, as the figures for household food sufficiency for 3-6 months, 6-9 months and 9-12 months are 31.25%, 6.25%, 15.625%, respectively. The research also showed that none of the household have year round food sufficiency. The major reason associated with this outcome was low land ownership (36%), followed by infertile land (28%) lack of manpower (20%), predators (12%) and diseases (4%). To become more food secure and in response to the food deficit condition, households have adopted coping strategies such as share cropping, seasonal migration within or outside the country, remittances, casual laboring, selling off livestock and borrowing food or money.
