Opis:
A total of 2398 fish specimens (1091 Percidae and 1307 Cyprinidae) belonging to 16 species (3 Percidae and 13 Cyprinidae), caught in the Polish part of the Vistula Lagoon were examined within December 1994-March 1997. The parasites found were identified as belonging to 63 taxa (61 species as well as Diplostomum spp. flukes and glochidia Unionidae gen. sp. which could not be identified to species) of the Microsporea (1), Protozoa (1), Myxozoa (2), Monogenea (10), Digenea (15), Cestoda (11), Nematoda (11), Acanthocephala (5), Hirudinea (1), Mollusca (1), Copepoda (4), and Branchiura (1). The percids and cyprinids were found to support 37 and 40 parasitic taxa, respectively, the taxon-richest parasite fauna occurring in zander, Sander lucioperca (26 taxa), followed by carp bream, Abramis brama, (24), European perch, Perca fluviatilis (24), roach, Rutilus rutilus (19), ruffe, Gymnocelphlus cernuus (15), and Prussian carp, Carassius gibelio (11). The remaining fish species hosted less than 10 parasitic species each. Metacercariae of the genus Diplostomum, found in about 37% of the fish examined, and Tylodelphys clavata, recorded in about 24% of the fish, proved the commonest parasites. The study showed the Vistula Lagoon cyprinid and percid parasite fauna to be dominated by freshwater species, frequencies of their occurrence in the brackishwater lagoon being lower than those in freshwater reservoirs. Frequencies of the 6 marine parasitic species found in the lagoon were, too, lower than those in the sea. It is suggested that some of the parasites (Ancyrocephalus paradoxus, Diplozoon paradoxum of the Monogenea, Diplostomum spp., Tylodelphys clavata of the Digenea, and Achtheres percarum of the Copepoda) prefer brackishwater habitats.

Opis:
Background. Fish and marine animals fat is a source of unique long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA): eicosa- pentaenoic (EPA), docosahexaenoic (DHA) and dipicolinic (DPA). These compounds have a beneficial influence on blood lipid profile and they reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, atherosclerosis and disorders of central nervous system. The proper ratio of n-6/n-3 fatty acids in diet is necessary to maintain a balance between the effects of eicosanoids synthesized from these acids in the body. Objective. The aim of this study was the evaluation of total fat and cholesterol content and percentage of fatty acids in selected commercial smoked marine fish. Material and methods. The studied samples were smoked marine fish such as: halibut, mackerel, bloater and sprat. The percentage total fat content in edible muscles was evaluated via the Folch modified method. The fat was extracted via the Bligh-Dyer modified method. The enzymatic hydrolysis was used to assesses cholesterol content in samples. The content of fatty acids, expressed as methyl esters, was evaluated with gas chromatography. Results. The average content of total fat in 100 g of fillet of halibut, mackerel, bloater and sprat amounted respectively to: 14.5 g, 25.7 g, 13.9 g and 13.9 g. The average content of cholesterol in 100 g of halibut, mackerel, bloater and sprat was respectively: 54.5 mg, 51.5 mg, 57.5 mg and 130.9 mg. The amount of saturated fatty acids (SFA) was about % of total fatty acids in the analyzed samples. The oleic acid (C18:1 n-9) was the major compound among monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) and amounted to 44% of these fatty acids. The percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in halibut, mackerel, bloater and sprat was respectively: 31.9%, 45.4%, 40.8% and 37.0%. The percentage of n-3 PUFA in mackerel and bloater was 30.1% and 30.2%, while in halibut and sprat was lower and amounted to 22.5% and 25.6%, respectively. Conclusions. In terms of nutritional magnitude the meat of mackerel and herring, compared to the meat of sprat and halibut has a much better n-3 PUFA content, while relatively low content of cholesterol.
Wprowadzenie. Tłuszcz pochodzący z ryb i zwierząt morskich zawiera unikalne długołańcuchowe wielonienasycone kwasy tłuszczowe (ang.: long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, LC-PUFA), tj. kwas eikozapentaenowy (EPA) oraz kwas dokozaheksaenowy (DHA). Materiał i metody. Materiał do badań stanowiły morskie ryby wędzone tj.: halibut, makrela, pikling i szproty. Zawartość procentową tłuszczu całkowitego w tkance mięsnej oznaczono zmodyfikowaną metodą Folch ’a. Tłuszcz rybi wyekstrahowano za pomocą zmodyfikowanej metody Bligh’a-Dyer ’a. Zawartość cholesterolu oznaczono metodą enzymatycznej hydrolizy. Skład kwasów tłuszczowych w postaci estrów metylowych oznaczono metodą chromatografii gazowej. Wyniki. Średnia zawartość tłuszczu w 100 g filetów z halibuta, makreli, śledzia-piklinga i szprotach wynosiła odpowiednio: 14,5 g, 25,7 g, 13,9 g i 13,9 g. Średnia zawartość cholesterolu w 100 g halibuta, makreli, piklinga i szprotach wynosiła odpowiednio: 54,5 mg, 51,5 mg, 57,5 mg i 130,9 mg. Kwasy tłuszczowe nasycone (NKT) stanowiły % sumy wszystkich kwasów tłuszczowych (KT). Dominującym KT jednonienasyconym (JNKT) był kwas oleinowy (C18:1 n-9) i stanowił około 44% udziału wszystkich JNKT. Udział wielonienasyconych kwasów tłuszczowych (WNKT) w halibucie, makreli, piklingu i szprotach wynosił odpowiednio: 31,9%, 45,4%, 40,8% i 37,0%. Udział WNKT n-3 w makreli i piklingu był zbliżony i wynosił odpowiednio 30,1% i 30,2%, natomiast w halibucie i szprotach był niższy i wynosił odpowiednio 22,5% i 25,6%. Wnioski.

Opis:
Plastic is one of the main pollutant sources that are difficult to decompose and then carried into the ocean and fragmented into smaller parts (microplastics) due to UV radiation and water currents. Their small size means that microplastics are often ingested by aquatic organisms, such as fish. This research aimed to determine the presence, abundance, and types of microplastics in the digestive tract of four dominant fishes landed at Lengkong Fish Auction Point, Cilacap, Central Java, i.e. threadfin (Eleutheronema tetradactylum), mackerel (Rastrelliger sp.), threadfin bream (Nemipterus japonicus), and hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus). We found microplastics in the digestive tract of four selected fishes with a frequency of occurrence of 100%. The concentration of microplastics in fish digestive tracts is relatively high, with a value range of 12 ±2.86 to 28.33 ±8.11 particles∙ind.-1. Microplastics were found in films, fibres, fragments, and granule shape types with various colours: brown, purple, blue, black, green, transparent, and yellow. The polymers found were polystyrene (PS), nylon, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), polyurethane (PU), polypropylene (PP), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The present study provides baseline data for microplastics contamination in commercial fish species landed at Lengkong Fish Auction Point, Cilacap, Central Java, Indonesia. The fact that we discovered PU, the most harmful polymer, piques our attention.

Opis:
Ice phenomena in watercourses and channels pose a threat to flow continuity and hydrotechnical devices. The organoleptic method, relying on human observation, has limitations such as a narrow range, subjective assessment, and high effort, leading to its decline in use. This article presents a number of modern techniques, i.e., the interpretation of RGB images, using unmanned aerial vehicles. Drone imagery offers a bird’s-eye view of areas that would otherwise be difficult to survey. It can improve the detection of frazil ice jams and, thus, contribute to the monitoring and spread of frazil ice. The authors performed research in the area of the Wrocław Water Junction on the Odra River in the area of the inlet near the fish pass at the Opatowice Weir during the flow of frazil ice on the water surface. To observe the phenomenon, a UAV with an RGB camera was used to record video in an orthogonal perspective in order to reduce geometric distortions of the optical system. The center of the frame was used for the analysis. The presented research results and the recognition of the literature indicate the possibility of using the presented technique for early detection of a potential threat from emerging ice phenomena. The results of the conducted analyses are objectively compared to the observational technique used at observation stations and allow for a reliable comparison of the intensity of ice phenomena in selected periods.

Opis:
In this study, the results of fish composition, distribution and abundance are presented according to the effects of water physicochemical parameters from the Livoq Lake in the eastern part of Kosovo. The fish specimens were sampled in six sampling stations in 2018 by using a variety of methods, including electro-fishing devices, fishing rod and cast nets. The measured physicochemical parameters included: water temperature, dissolved oxygen, saturation of dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, total dissolved solids. In total, 320 fish specimens were collected, belonging to 10 species of the following 5 families: Cyprinidae, Silurideae, Esocideae, Percideae and Centrarhideae. The most species rich family is Cyprinidae with 6 species in total: Cyprinus caprio Linnaeus, 1758, Rutilus rutilus Linnaeus, 1758, Carassius carassius Linnaeus, 1758, Squalius cephalus Linnaeus, 1758, Leucaspius delineatus Linnaeeus, 1758 and Alburnus alburnus Linnaeus, 1758. Four other families are represented by one species each: Silurideae with Siluris glanis Linnaeus, 1758, Esocidea with Esox lucius Linnaeus, 1758, Percideae with Perca fluviatilis Linnaeus, 1758 and Centrarhideae with Lepomis gibosus Linnaeus, 1758. The knowledge on fish fauna in Kosovo is still very fragmentary, and this investigation contributes to determining the qualitative composition and abundance features based on the water physicochemical parameters in this part of the Balkan Peninsula.

The pycnodont fish Gyrodusis reported for the first time from the Lower Cretaceous of Germany based on two lower jaw elements from the Hauterivian and Barremian. The stratigraphic and geographic distribution of Gyrodus is summarized. Gyrodusranges from the Middle Jurassic to the Early Cretaceous making it one of the longest living pycnodonts. Unambiguous Late Cretaceous records of Gyrodus are still missing. Gyrodus displays its widest distribution and greatest taxonomic diversity in the Late Jurassic. The distribution of Gyrodusimplies not only near−coastal mode of life but also a pelagic lifestyle conversely to most other pycnodonts. External body features and function of the unpaired fins support this interpretation.

Opis:
Fish passes are essential elements for maintaining continuity for migrating fish. Without them, fish would be unable to undertake migration to satisfy their basic life needs. These devices must meet a range of requirements related to the size of individual fish pass elements and the hydrodynamic parameters of the flowing water. Despite efforts, it is not always possible to meet these requirements. There are many causes of errors in the design and construction of fish passes, and each case should be assessed individually. The most severe consequence of these errors is the obstruction of fish migrating upstream. In this study, an analysis of the permeability of a semi-natural fish pass was conducted for fish. This assessment was carried out using two methods. In the first approach, the required geometric dimensions of the fish pass elements were determined based on the dimensions of individuals living in the river channel. In the second approach, the dimensions were extracted from publications dedicated to slot fish passes, as the studied object resembles such a design. The analysis revealed that the fish pass does not fulfil its intended role. All fish species living in the Nidzica River channel face difficulties in passing through the fish pass, including the brook trout, for which the object is specifically designed. The main errors stem from the design and construction, resulting in exceeded values, primarily in the hydrodynamic parameters, rendering the fish pass impassable. The study also aimed to develop corrective recommendations considering the latest scientific developments.
