Opis:
Elastic or acoustic wave-field modeling is an important part of seismic exploration. It can be used during the planning, processing and interpretation stages of seismic investigation. First attempts of using wave-field modeling were undertaken in the seventies by Alford, Kelly and others (Alford R M, Kelly K R and Boore D M 1974 Geophysics 39 (6) 834; Kelly K R, Ward R W, Treitel S and Alford R M 1976 Geophysics 41 2). These attempts were restricted by the limitations of computers at that time. Even now, computation for models of the standard exploration scale could last many hours, and many days in case of longer recording times. One of the best methods to overcome this disadvantage is parallelization of computations (Niccanna C and Bean C J 1997 Computers and Geosciences 23 (7) 771; Villareal A and Scales J A 1997 Computers in Physics 11 (4) 388). This paper presents the results of distributed parallelization of elastic and acoustic wave-field modeling based on a Parallel Virtual Machine.

Opis:
This paper deals with the problem of the scattering of surface water waves by underwater obstacles. The main goal of the investigations is to estimate the efficiency of such structures in protecting sea shelf zones from open sea waves. A useful measure of the protection is the ratio of the square of the amplitude of the transmitted wave to the square of the amplitude of the arriving wave. The problem is formulated in terms of the finite difference method. It is shown that the discrete approach to the problem leads to eigenvalue problems for two matrices resulting from the discrete description. As compared to analytical formulation, the discrete method may be convenient in application to unsteady problems and obstacles of complicated geometry.

Opis:
The paper is concerned with the problem of interaction between a coherent floating ice cover and a fixed, rigid, vertically-walled circular cylinder. The ice cover, of horizontal dimensions considerably larger than the size of the structure, is assumed to be driven against the structure by wind and water current drag stresses. The floating ice cover is modelled as a plate that is subject to the action of horizontal forces and transverse bending due to the reaction of underlying water. During an interaction event, of a quasi-static character, the ice is modelled as a creeping material the behaviour of which is described by a viscous flow law with two, bulk and shear, viscosities. The viscosities change dramatically in their magnitudes during a transition from converging to diverging deformation of the material to reflect the fact that floating ice offers much less resistance to tensile rather than compressive stresses. By numerical simulations carried out by a finite difference method, the influence of the ice rheological parameters on the distribution of contact stresses at the ice - structure interface is investigated. Two types of boundary conditions at the interface, free-slip and no-slip, are considered, and their effects on the loads sustained by the structure are compared. In addition, creep buckling of the ice sheet near the structure is analysed to determine the critical time at which ice starts to fail due to exceeding its flexural strength at given loading conditions.

This paper presents the imperfection sensitivity of annular plate with three-layered structure. The plate composed of thin elastic facings and a thicker elastic core is loaded in facing plane. The classical issue of a three-layered plate was solved for dynamic deflection problem using the approximation methods: orthogonalization and finite difference. The solution includes the axisymmetric and asymmetric plate modes of the dynamic stability loss. The evaluation of the rate of plate sensitivity to imperfection of plate preliminary geometry has been enriched by the analysis of plate models built of finite elements. The ABAQUS program has been used. The numerous calculation results in the form of deflection characteristics, buckling modes, values of critical parameters create the view of response of dynamic plate structure with different rate of imperfection and linear in time loading growth, too.

The paper presents the dynamic response of annular three-layered plate subjected to loads variable in time. The plate is loaded in the plane of outer layers. The plate core has the electrorheological properties expressed by the Bingham body model. The dynamic stability loss of plate with elastic core is determined by the critical state parameters, particularly by the critical stresses. Numerous numerical observations show the influence of the values of viscosity constant and critical shear stresses, being the Bingham body parameters, on the supercritical viscous fluid plate behaviour. The problem has been solved analytically and numerically using the orthogonalization method and finite difference method. The solution includes both axisymmetric and asymmetric plate dynamic modes.

The thin metal film subjected to the ultra-short laser pulse is analyzed. Heat transfer processes occurring in the domain considered are described by the dual-phase lag model in which the unknown is the heat flux, not, as usual, temperature. This approach is especially convenient in the case of Neumann boundary conditions, which are taken into account here. The mathematical model supplemented by initial conditions is solved using the explicit scheme of finite difference method. In the final part of the paper the examples of computations are shown and the conclusions are formulated.

Opis:
This paper presents solutions to the problem of behaviour of three-layered annular plates loaded by compressive stress quickly increasing in time acting on the inner plate edge. The finite difference method and finite element method have been used for solving the problem. An axially-symmetrical form of loss of dynamic stability of the plate with clamped inner and outer edges and with a symmetrical transverse structure of layers composed of thin facings and a thicker foam core has been analysed. Using the finite difference method, the basic system of differential equations enabling numerical calculation of plate deflections was formulated. In the finite element method the computational model of an annular sector of the plate fulfilling conditions of the sandwich plate with a soft core has been built. The results of dynamic numerical calculations have been presented in the form of time histories of plate maximum deflection and velocity of deflection. Calculation results of examplary plates differing in thickness and stiffness of the foam core enable qualitative observations of the critical and supercritical plate behaviours with the quantitative evaluation of values of critical parameters: time, deflection and load determined using the criterion presented by Volmir (1972).

A novel LASER action nano-hetero-structure of the inter-subband, mid-infrared functionality type is designed on the basis of optically pumped dual resonant tunnelling of conductivity electrons within an appropriately energetically determined scheme of five subbands hosted by two communicating asymmetric, approximately rectangular quantum wells (QWs). The upper LASER action level employed is the second excited subband of the nanostructure's back, wider QW and is provided with electrons via resonant tunnelling from the first excited subband of the nanostructure's front QW populated through remotely ignited optical pumping out of the local fundamental subband. The first excited back QW subband functions as the lower LASER action level, directly delivering the received electrons to the local fundamental subband - via fast vertical longitudinal optical phonon scattering - wherefrom they are being recycled back to the nanostructure's front QW fundamental subband by virtue of a second-reverse sense-resonant tunnelling-mediated normal charge transport mechanism. The handling of the de Broglie wave-function problem evolves into a numerical calculation of a Sturm-Liouville eigensystem solved by means of a finite difference method employing an appropriate tridiagonal coefficient matrix.

The article presents a method of computing the step response of an air floor heater. The method implements parallel algorithms on a graphics processing unit. In the analyzed concrete slab heating ducts are placed. Hot air is transferred through them, thanks to which the heat penetrates into the slab. Heat transfer into the environment takes place on the top surface of the floor by natural convection and radiation. The bottom surface of the slab is thermally insulated. A two-dimensional heat equation was discretized with the use of the implicit finite difference method. In order to solve the obtained system of equations, the conjugate gradient method was used. Moreover, in order to examine the possibility of shortening the computations time, the algorithm of this method was implemented on a graphics processing unit. A computer program, using the CUDA parallel computing platform and linear algebra libraries CUBLAS and CUSPARSE, was developed.

This paper presents the effect of the auxeticity on the behaviour of a plate subjected to the loss of stability. The plate structure is composed of three layers built of auxetic or conventional facings and a conventional core. The plate is loaded mechanically in the plane of facings with forces increasing in time. The main technique of the problem solution is based on the orthogonalisation and finite differences methods. Selected examples of plates were calculated with the use of the finite difference method. The obtained results allow observing the similarities and differences between plate models, whose structures are built of conventional layers or mixed layers: auxetic-foam-auxetic. Investigations complement the knowledge of the responses of the composite structures with auxetic properties. They show the possibility of using special plate structures whose materials are characterised by the negative value of Poisson’s ratio.

The second-order dual phase lag equation (DPLE) as a mathematical model of the microscale heat transfer is considered. It is known that the starting point determining the final form of this equation is the generalized Fourier law in which two positive constants (the relaxation and thermalization times) appear. Depending on the order of the generalized Fourier law expansion into the Taylor series, different forms of the DPLE can be obtained. As an example of the problem described by the second-order DPLE equation, thermal processes proceeding in the domain of a thin metal film subjected to a laser pulse are considered. The numerical algorithm is based on an implicit scheme of the finite difference method. At the stage of numerical modeling, the first, second and mixed order of the dual phase lag equation are considered. In the final part of the paper, examples of different solutions are presented and conclusions are formulated.

Three cases of developed nonlinear thermal models of linear, quadratic, exponential and power-law variations of thermal conductivity are considered. The accuracy of the developed numerical code is verified as the results of the numerical solutions established good agreements with the results of the exact analytical solutions. Through the numerical solutions, parametric studies are carried out. From the results, it is shown that increase in radiative and magnetic field parameters as well as in-homogeneity index improve the thermal performance of the fin. Also, the transient responses reveal that the FGM fin with linear-law and power-law function shows the slowest and fastest thermal responses, respectively. This study will provide a very good platform for further studies on the design of extended surfaces where the surrounding fluid is influenced by a magnetic field.

Opis:
This paper deals with a finite difference method for a wide class of weakly coupled nonlinear second-order partial differential systems with initial condition and weakly coupled nonlinear implicit boundary conditions. One part of each system is of the parabolic type (degenerated parabolic equations) and the other of the elliptic type (equations with a parameter) in a cube in R1+n. A suitable finite difference scheme is constructed. It is proved that the scheme has a unique solution, and the numerical method is consistent, convergent and stable. The error estimate is given. Moreover, by the method, the differential problem has at most one classical solution. The proof is based on the Banach fixed-point theorem, the maximum principle for difference functional systems of the parabolic type and some new difference inequalities. It is a new technique of studying the mixed-type systems. Examples of physical applications and numerical experiments are presented.
