    One of the characteristics of the teaching of Pope John Paul II is his approach to the subject of faith and reason, which have played a central role in the development of civilization. They work best when they mutually challenge one another to look farther, to probe more deeply, in quest of truth. Hostility between faith and reason is not accepted because both have their source in God. But when both work together, the human person has the chance of discovering the full truth about himself, the world and God. The author of this article argues that a large number of papal documents and pronouncements of Pope John Paul II show his contribution towards the bringing together of natural sciences and theology. This is also a challenge for those who continue this effort.

    The content of the study are dilemmas connected with the denition of the act proposed by St. omas Acquinas. e attention was focused on its rst element, which is ordinatio. Acknowledging the denition of the canon law understood as ordination dei does not equal the passive role of reason in accepting it, since the act of faith remains the act of human reason, whose object is the truth accepted as such by virtue of God`s authority. e role of reason does not come down only to historical perception and shaping the demands of God`s law. e canon law, which is merely a human, legally binding way of passing on faith, is the token of this act, through which one accepts what was revealed by God and then expresses in norms as the truth. Ordinatio dei nds its place in the norm of faith (des qua) and its acceptance (des quae) and ordination rationis in the process of expressing it by means of a tool which is a normative act in the form of legal regulation. 
    Treścią opracowania są dylematy związane z definicją ustawy zaproponowaną przez św. Tomasza z Akwinu. Uwaga została skoncentrowana wokół jej pierwszego elementu, jakim jest ordinatio. Przyjęcie definicji ustawy kanonicznej poznanej jako ordinatio fidei nie oznacza biernej roli rozumu w jej akceptacji, gdyż akt wiary pozostaje aktem ludzkiego rozumu, którego przedmiotem jest prawda uznana za taką mocą Boskiego autorytetu. Rola rozumu nie sprowadza się jedynie do historycznego ujmowania i kształtowania wymagań prawa Bożego. Ustawa kanoniczna, która jest jedynie ludzkim środkiem do przekazu wiary o prawnie zobowiązującym charakterze jest wyrazem tego aktu, poprzez który przyjmuje się za prawdę to, co zostało przez Boga objawione, a następnie w normy ujęte. Ordinatio fidei znajduje swoje miejsce w normie wiary (fides qua) i jej akceptacji (fides quae) a ordinatio rationis w procesie ujęcia jej za pomocą narzędzia jakim jest akt normatywny w postaci ustawy.

    In this article the author reviews the interrelationship between faith and reason in the steps of John Paul II’s Encyclical Letter Fides et ratio. He explores briefly historical circumstances following Etienne Gilson. Then, he introduces philosophical and theological considerations of Cornelio Fabro to do theology in the footsteps of Aquinas. From the perspective of Thomism of the Italian philosopher and by recalling the most urgent theological tasks for the third millennium as indicated in Fides et ratio, the author presents general guidelines for the circularity of faith and reason within the context of fundamental theology. Throughout this article he reads Fides et ratio specifically through the Fabrian lens to present a fresh perspective as a contribution to fundamental theology. Finally, he recalls the conclusive recommendation of John Paul II in the aforementioned letter so as to harmonize reason and faith within a Marian framework.
    Autor dokonuje przeglądu wzajemnych relacji między wiarą a rozumem w świetle encykliki Jana Pawła II Fides et ratio. Za Etienne Gilsonem omawia pokrótce uwarunkowania historyczne. Następnie przedstawia niektóre filozoficzne i teologiczne rozważania Cornelio Fabra na temat uprawiania teologii śladami Akwinaty. Z perspektywy tomizmu włoskiego filozofa, przywołując najpilniejsze zadania teologiczne na trzecie tysiąclecie wskazane w Fides et ratio, autor przedstawia ogólne wytyczne dotyczące cyrkularności wiary i rozumu w kontekście teologii fundamentalnej. W całym artykule odczytuje Fides et ratio szczególnie przez pryzmat nauczania Cornelio Fabra, aby dać świeży wkład do teologii fundamentalnej. Na koniec autor przypomina rozstrzygające zalecenie Jana Pawła II zawarte we wspomnianym liście, aby zharmonizować rozum i wiarę w ramach maryjnych.

    In the encyclical „Fides et ratio”, John Paul II appealed for a return to a sincere dialogue between theology and philosophy. The current article attempts to respond to the Popeʼs appeal, going a step further towards building a constructive dialogue between theology and psychology. Without minimizing the historical tensions between theology and psychology, the author turns to the interpretation of human existence, seeing in it the potential locus and kairos of these separate scientific disciplines, which meet inevitably, facing the mystery of humanity. In order to show possible ways of complementing theology and psychology, the author turns to spiritual theology and existential psychotherapy.
    W encyklice „Fides et ratio” Jan Paweł II apelował o powrót do szczerego dialogu teologii z filozofią. Obecny artykuł podejmuje próbę odpowiedzi na apel papieża, idąc krok dalej, w stronę budowania konstruktywnego dialogu pomiędzy teologią oraz psychologią. Nie pomniejszając historycznych napięć pomiędzy teologią oraz psychologią, autor zwraca się ku interpretacji egzystencji ludzkiej, widząc w niej potencjalny locus oraz kairos tych odrębnych dyscyplin naukowych, które spotykają się jednak nieuchronnie, stając wobec misterium człowieczeństwa. W celu ukazania możliwych dróg dopełniania się teologii oraz psychologii autor zwraca się ku teologii duchowości oraz ku psychoterapii egzystencjalnej.

    Drawing on John Paul II’s encyclical Fides et ratio, this paper answers the question of why Christian Revelation provides a vital link between faith and reason. It approaches the problem from the perspective of personalism. In order to capture the essence of the relationship of Christian Revelation to faith and reason, the paper addresses the following issues: why a human person is a mystery to himself, why Christian Revelation corresponds to a human person’s mystery, and what identity is given to faith and reason by Christian Revelation.

    Philosophical forces gathered in late nineteenth and early twentieth century Catholic Modernism have crystallized into theological views which permeate the antinomian atmosphere in the Church today, resulting in an ongoing Catholic identity problem, both within the Church and in relation to the world. In place of the perennial philosophy and its contemplative ideal, many now welcome the incoherence of broad philosophical and theological pluralism, while pastoral practice is infused with the fruits of pragmatism and the rhetoric of false dichotomies (justice/mercy, intellectual/pastoral, tradition/living faith, speculative truth/charity, for example). To reverse this anti-intellectual course, rehabilitation of Aquinas’s positions on the primacy of the speculative order and contemplative charism, his integration of natural, revealed and mystical wisdoms, and his sense of objective worship, is needed. A brief account of the robust role of philosophy in the Church’s mission and of Gilson’s nuanced position on the encounter of Thomism and Modernism supports this assertion.

    The article is devoted to the objective and subjective conditions of religious faith. In Light of two encyclicals on faith: “Fides et ratio” by John Paul II and “Lumen fidei” by Francis, it talks about the subject and the act of faith. Both popes point to the truth (Godʼs revelation), which is the object of faith. John Paul II focuses on truth in the context of human knowledge, while Francis emphasizes the aspect of love of truth. The act of faith mainly concerns the role of reason in faith. Moreover, the benefits of the cooperation of reason and faith were indicated.
    Artykuł jest poświęcony przedmiotowym i podmiotowym uwarunkowaniom wiary religijnej. Na podstawie dwóch encyklik o wierze: „Fides et ratio” Jana Pawła II oraz „Lumen fidei” Franciszka jest w nim mowa o przedmiocie oraz akcie wiary. Obaj papieże wskazują na prawdę (objawienie Boże), która stanowi przedmiot wiary. Jan Paweł II skupia się na prawdzie w kontekście ludzkiego poznania, natomiast Franciszek akcentuje aspekt miłości prawdy. W kwestii aktu wiary jest mowa głównie o roli rozumu w wierze. Ponadto wskazano korzyści płynące ze współpracy rozumu i wiary.

    Opis:
    The article compares the views of Joseph Ratzinger and Steve Stewart-Williams regarding understanding the meaning of life and the meaning of the universe. The first of them represents the position of Catholic theology, and the second of evolutionism. Both thinkers agree on the scientific basis of the theory of evolution. However, when it comes to meaning, they differ significantly. Stewart-Williams starts from materialism and naturalism, while Ratzinger takes Godʼs creative plan as his starting point. The first of them perceives man as the only creator of meaning for himself and the universe. Ratzinger introduces transcendence to the theory of evolution, which expands the field of perception and generates a much deeper understanding of the objective meaning of life and the universe.
    W artykule porównano poglądy Josepha Ratzingera i Steveʼa Stewarta-Williamsa dotyczące rozumienia sensu życia i sensu wszechświata. Pierwszy z nich reprezentuje stanowisko teologii katolickiej, a drugi ewolucjonizmu. Obydwaj myśliciele są zgodni co do naukowych podstaw teorii ewolucji. Jednak w kwestii sensu znacznie się różnią. Stewart-Williams wychodzi z materializmu i naturalizmu, natomiast Ratzinger za punkt wyjścia obiera stwórczy zamysł Boga. Pierwszy z nich postrzega człowieka jako jedynego kreatora sensu dla siebie i wszechświata. Ratzinger wprowadza transcendencję do teorii ewolucji, co poszerza pole percepcji i generuje znacznie głębsze rozumienie obiektywnego sensu życia i wszechświata.

    „Człowiek dzisiejszy zdaje się być stale zagrożony przez to, co jest jego własnym wytworem, co jest wynikiem pracy jego rąk, a zarazem – i bardziej jeszcze – pracy jego umysłu, dążeń jego woli. Owoce tej wielorakiej działalności człowieka (…), w jakimś pochodnym i pośrednim zakresie skutków – skierowują się przeciw człowiekowi.” (Jan Paweł II). Papieski postulat domagający się proporcjonalnego do rozwoju cywilizacji naukowo – technicznej, rozwoju moralności i etyki, wskazuje na możliwe postawy współczesnego człowieka inspirowane antropologią chrześcijańską. Na przykładzie encyklik Redemptor Hominis i Fides et Ratio Jana Pawła II, chciałabym przedstawić rozważania dotyczące relacji człowieka wobec rozwoju cywilizacji naukowo – technicznej oraz zastanowić się: „czy człowiek jako człowiek, w kontekście tego postępu staje się lepszy, (…) bardziej gotowy świadczyć i nieść pomoc wszystkim?”.

    Adversus Nationes Arnobiusza jest apologią kontrowersyjną. Tym, co najbardziej może dziwić czytelnika dzieła, jest koncepcja stworzenia człowieka, nawiązująca do Platońskiego Timajosa, a także pogarda dla tego, co ludzkie: ciała, kondycji i duszy człowieka. Należy zaznaczyć, że zjawisko to było powszechne w kulturze tego okresu, osiągając ekstremum w nurcie gnostyckim. Zdaniem Arnobiusza rozum człowieka nie jest zdolny ująć rzeczywistości boskiej, a jednocześnie nie pozwala na praktykowanie bezsensownych, często krwawych, kultów. W artykule zamierzam przedstawić strategie apologetyczne Arnobiusza, zmierzające do zdyskredytowania bezmyślnej pobożności. Według Retora z Sicca Veneria postawa religijna pozbawiona rozumu jest tylko i wyłącznie przesądem. Arnobiusz w Adversus Nationes przygotował grunt dla wielowiekowej dyskusji dotyczącej kwestii fides et ratio.
    Adversus Nationes by Arnobius is a controversial apologia. What may surprise the reader of Adversus Nationes the most is the concept of creating the man which alludes to Plato's Timaeus but also the contempt for all that is human – his body, his condition and his soul. It must be stressed, however, that such attitude was common in the culture of this time, reaching its peak in gnosticism. According to Arnobius, human mind is not capable of comprehending the nature of God and at the same time it does not allow to practice pointless, often bloody cults. This article attempts to show Arnobius's apologetic strategies, which aim at discrediting senseless piety. According the Rhetor of Sicca Veneria, religiousness without reason is nothing more but superstition. In Adversus Nationes Arnobius laid foundation for many centuries long debate on the question of fides et ratio.
