Opis:
The riveting parameters strongly affect residual stresses induced during riveting, which in turn have an impact on the fatigue life of riveted joints. Since rivets are established as critical from the fatigue point of view, the fatigue life of riveted joints often determines the life of the whole structure. The authors were able to become acquainted with three riveting instructions (process specifications) used by the aerospace companies from western Europe. This work presents the analysis of the riveting parameters' influence on residual stresses around the rivets. The impact of the clearance between a rivet shank and a hole as well as driven head dimensions and a rivet length were investigated based on the numerical simulations. The aim of the analysis was to determine the range of stresses variation when the requirements of the riveting instructions are fulfilled. For the purposes of comparison, the calculations were performed also with the parameters as specified in the Polish industry standards. For all calculations, the geometry of the universal rivet MS20470 was used. The results show that residual stresses can vary strongly depending on the parameters in the instructions and standard requirements.

Opis:
This paper is a case study conducted to present an approach to the process of designing new products using virtual prototyping. During the first stage of research a digital geometric model of the vehicle was created. Secondly it underwent a series of tests utilising the multibody system method in order to determine the forces and displacements in selected construction nodes of the vehicle during its movement on an uneven surface. In consequence the most dangerous case of loads was identified. The obtained results were used to conduct detailed strength testing of the bicycle frame and changes its geometry. For the purposes of this case study two FEA software environments (Inventor and SolidWorks) were used. It has been confirmed that using method allows to implement the process of creating a new product more effectively as well as to assess the influence of the conditions of its usage more efficiently. It was stated that using of different software environments increases the complexity of the technical process of production preparation but at the same time increases the certainty of prototype testing. The presented example of simulation calculations made for the bicycle can be considered as a useful method for calculating other prototypes with high complexity of construction due to its systematized character of chosen conditions and testing procedure. It allows to verify the correctness of construction, functionality and perform many analyses, which can contribute to the elimination of possible errors as early as at the construction stage.

Opis:
In this paper, Finite Element Method (FEA) harmonic analysis of the changes caused by raising the centerline of a large, precise lathe is presented. Two standalone dynamic subsystems (“Rotor Shaft” and “Support”) are revealed and the resilience of the “Rotor Shaft” to the raising procedure is stated. The three subsystems of the “Support” class are much more dynamically pliable, only the main eigenmodes of the shaft and supports are excited in the 0…100 Hz range (MR1“Half-wave” and MS1…3 “Radial pecking”). Mounting the lunette suppresses the MR1 peak by a factor of two; therefore the lunette is strongly recommended, with an optional tuned-mass damper (TMD). The support’s resonant frequencies MS1…3 are more deleterious for precision; they should be omitted or weakened using TMD’s that are attached to the supports. For the above conditions, raising the centerline (up to 600 mm) may be included in the lathe renovation program.

Opis:
Riveting is still one of the main joining methods of thin-walled aircraft structures. Such features as simplicity of implementation, possibility of two different material connection (e.g. metallic with non-metallic ones) and the fact that is it a well-known (reliable) method causes popularity of riveting. The never-ending attempt to obtain as low mass as possible (mainly to reduce fuel consumption) is the reason for using material of high specific strength in the aerospace industry. High strength titanium or aluminium alloys (e.g. 2024T3) and composite laminates (e.g. CFRP or Glare) are examples of such materials. The article deals with methods of connecting various materials. The paper presents advantages and disadvantages of different/selected connection types. Strength prediction and failure modes of mechanical joints are described for metallic as well as for composite components. Composites are complex materials having an anisotropic structure (and anisotropic mechanical properties) leading to various failure mechanisms. Main principles for appropriate joint design of composite laminate panels (laminate configuration and typical/specific geometrical dimensions) are indicated/specified. The bearing failure mechanism is accepted to be a safe progressive one. Mechanism of bearing (generally compressive) load transfer into composite laminates by shear of the matrix is analysed. Some examples of improvement bearing strength of laminates are presented according to literature. On the base of presented examples and bearing load transfer analysis, some conclusions for an appropriate solution of this problem are drawn.

FEM models were built on the basis of pre-surgical CT scans, routinely used in medical practice. MIMICS software was used to process the results of the neuroimaging study and to create 3D models. Two models were built: with and without a stabiliser. A static load analysis was performed for a normal upper-body load. The simulations allowed to determine the stresses in the individual discs for both models, with and without the transpedicular stabiliser.

Purpose: The paper presents the process of numerical modeling and simulation of balloon angioplasty of the coronary artery using Finite Element Method. Methods: The authors focused on the issue of adequate pressure applying in an arterial tissue during the post-dilatation process in the 'kissing balloon' stenting technique applied to patients with bifurcation stenosis. Despite great progress in the field of interventional cardiology, angioplasty in bifurcations still belongs to the most difficult interventions, generally being less effective and more risky than in the cases of straight stenosis. Results: During the modeling procedures and further simulations, the authors focused on mutual cooperation of non - compliant angioplasty balloons and the coronary artery. The other goal was to develop a sufficiently accurate model of the coronary artery fragment, including its bifurcation and angioplasty balloons, however it was decided to ignore the modeling of coronary stents. Conclusions: The undertaken issue is considered as relatively complicated and complex but, in the authors opinion, the implementation of advanced computer aided engineering techniques may, in this case, answer several important questions without the need of performing costly and aggravating in vivo tests.

The efficient use of resources are becoming more important due to economic and environmental requirements. In widely used forming processes like deep drawing an avoidance of lubricants – namely dry deep drawing – is a key factor for saving resources. In this paper, a combined approach consisting of a macro-structured tool design and a special modified protective coating is presented. The combination ensures a stable process with a sufficiently wide process window under dry conditions. The absence of lubricants in critical areas has to be compensated by tetrahedral amorphous carbon ta-C films which is additionally structured by Direct Laser Interference Patterning (DLIP) for further improvement of the tribological performance.

The paper presents an analysis of the influence of a number of technological aspects of both the socket and the pin on the value of the force required for joint disconnection. A number of numerical simulations were made in Abaqus program to examine effects of such parameters as: presence of an interference fit, use of spherical latches, application of different rigidity of the pin by making cuts with variable width and length, use of different angles of inclination of the working part of the connection. Models of different simple joints presented in this work, can also operate in large structures forming panels of aircraft structures. For this purpose one of the analyzed geometry of the connection was applied to create a 3-D panel model of the structural element in CAD - SolidWorks program. All analysed models with different geometries were subjected to simulation of opening process. The corresponding critical forces were estimated for the beginning of the failure process. The detailed discussion of all model parameters was included to specify their influence on the whole disconnection of joints. It should be noted that aerospace structures work under complex loading states and further numerical studies are required to extend the presented results.
W pracy przedstawiono analizę wpływu kilku zagadnień technologii wykonania zarówno gniazda jak i trzpienia na wartość siły potrzebnej do rozłączenia połączenia. Przeprowadzono szereg symulacji numerycznych w programie Abaqus, badając wpływ takich parametrów jak: występowanie wcisku, użycie sferycznych zatrzasków, zastosowanie różnych sztywności w trzpieniu poprzez wykonanie rozcięć o zmiennej szerokości i długości, zastosowanie różnych kątów pochylenia części roboczej gniazda.

The objective of the present work was to highlight the strain values at the contact point on the surface of the Mg-0.5Ca-xMn alloys. The results showed that the highest stresses observed near the gaps of the plate and in the screws. It means that all mechanical loads are sustained by the plate and screws, and the patient’s femur can be recovered.

In this paper, a special configuration for the huge multipurpose machine tool of “travelling column” type was investigated by the finite element analysis. Internal degrees of freedom of a bulky system consisting of the ram, stock, column, sledge and bed, were implemented by the hydrostatic guides. A simulation of coupling two assembled columns into the portal structure was completed. The results of this work showed that temporal joining raises the spindle static rigidity by 1.39–1.91 times depending on the direction (mostly longitudinal – along the X-axis). The simulation also revealed the robustness of a whole-machine resonance pattern (11.7–39.0 Hz) to “column–to–portal coupling”. Eight types of eigenmodes were analyzed for frequency intervals from 0 to 80 Hz. A decrease by 2.9 times of the resonance peaks of a frequency response function was observed in the case of a portal structure creation. In case of columns-to-portal transition, stable cutting just at resonance frequencies (resonance overriding) becomes allowable. Overall, the “Portal” structure is recommended for intermittent cutting machining by raised high spindle unit at frequencies below 40 Hz.

Opis:
The function of stabilizer bars in motor vehicles is to reduce the body roll during cornering. The body roll is influenced by the occurring wheel load shift and the change of camber angle. Decisive is the steering performance which may be purposefully adjusted towards understeer or oversteer when designing the stabilization. The article contains the further outline of the calculation methods for stabilizer bars. Modern technological and structural solutions in contemporary cars are reflected also in the construction and manufacture of stabilizer bars. A proper construction and the selection of parameters influence the strength properties, the weight, durability and reliability as well as the selection of an appropriate production method. An improper preparation of Finite Element Method calculation models consequently leads to wrong results. It is particularly difficult to interpret the results and to find an error if we do not have a comparative calculation base (such as results of fatigue tests, analytical strength calculations). The article contains practical directions and general instructions for calculation necessary for a correct preparation of calculation models, for a proper performance of calculations and a proper interpretation of results using Finite Element Method.
Artykuł zawiera wskazówki praktyczne i ogólne wytyczne obliczeniowe niezbędne do prawidłowego przygotowania modeli obliczeniowych, do właściwego przeprowadzenia obliczeń i właściwej interpretacji wyników z wykorzystaniem Metody Elementów Skończonych.

The hybrid adhesive bonded and riveted joints have wider and wider application in different branches of engineering: aerospace, mechanical, civil etc. The hybrid joints' strength is 1.5 to 3 times higher than only adhesive bonded joints' strength. The hybrid joints characterize higher reliability during long-term working. In this article we present the influence of rivets' lay-out geometry on the hybrid adhesive bonded/riveted joints response to mechanical loading. Experimental research was carried using 3-D digital image correlation system ARAMIS. This system enables monitoring of the deformation processes of the hybrid joint specimen up to failure. We analysed the state of deformation of the adhesive bonded double-lap joints reinforced by different numbers of rivets. The hybrid joint specimens were subjected to the uniaxial tensile test. Moreover, the influence of geometry of individual number of rivets' layout (rivets arranged in one or more rows) for hybrid joint strength was studied. Experimental research was completed and supported by the computer simulations of the whole deformation processes of metal layers (aluminum), adhesive layers and rivets. Numerical simulations were conducted with the ABAQUS programme. The analysis of stress concentrations in different parts of the hybrid joint and their behaviour up to failure were investigated. Finally, the analysis and the comparison of the obtained results confirmed the influence of rivets' lay-out geometry not only on rivets joints but also on the hybrid adhesive bonded/riveted joints.

Opis:
As part of a cooperation project between the Institute for Machine Tools, Stuttgart, Germany, and EMO Systems/Nuton GmbH, Berlin, Germany, a prototype of a multiaxial force platform with disturbance compensation for the measurement of the cutting forces in machine tools was developed. Commercially available products based on piezoelectric technology are subject to a degree of measurement uncertainty and therefore characterized by various disturbances. Interpreting measurement data of the commercially available products is complex, time-consuming and prone to errors. This paper describes the mechanical design and the simulation of the multiaxial force measuring system with the finite element method (FEM) as well as the conceptual development of a reduced model for a multibody simulation with the purpose of implementing a compensation algorithm. The measurement uncertainty was reduced by using appropriate hardware and software for the compensation of the various disturbances so that the application of the force platform would also be possible in the industrial application for the process diagnosis, the control and the regulation in machine tools. Systems based on strain gauge technology have some advantages in the field of zero-point stability and also provide a less expensive solution. For the disturbance compensation, an additional force and torque sensor system with eight channels was used for the detection of the platform displacement and inclination. With the help of appropriate algorithms for the disturbance compensation and their integration in the evaluation software, the disturbances could be reduced to a minimum.

Opis:
The objective of this project is to seek out best material and most fitted cross-section for an Eicher E2 Truck ladder chassis with the constraints of most shear stress, equivalent stress and deflection of the chassis under maximum load condition. In present the Ladder chassis that are uses for creating buses and trucks are C and that I cross section sort, that area unit product of Steel alloy (Austenitic). In Asian country variety of passengers travel within the bus isn't uniform, excess passengers area unit movement within the buses daily as a result of that there are unit forever prospects of being failure/fracture within the chassis/frame. So Chassis with high strength cross section is required to attenuate the failures together with issue of safety in design. Within the present work, we have taken higher strength because the main issue, that the dimensions of an existing vehicle chassis of an Eicher E2 (Model no.11.10) Truck is taken for analysis with materials specifically ASTM A710 Steel, ASTM A302 steel and metal Alloy 6063-T6 subjected to constant load. Vehicle chassis are modelled by considering two different cross-sections specifically C and Rectangular Box (Hollow) sort cross sections.

The composite materials are remarkably increasing in many industry sectors like aircraft, automobiles, oil pipes, and marine boats. This attention comes from their excellent properties, such as lightweight and high strength. However, these materials expose many damages like fiber-matrix debonding, matrix crack, and delamination. The composite structures risked damage through the service life and therefore need to repair to achieve their function with a good performance. This paper focuses on the analysis during the tensile test of samples of fiberglass epoxy composite materials exposed to damage before and after repair. Experimental and numerical investigations are performed to determine and identify mechanical properties and failure analysis between repaired and unrepaired composite plates. Five samples are selected: without hole, 4 mm hole-repaired, stepped hole from 4 to 8 mm, and stepped hole from 4 to 8 mm-repaired. Simulation models are created using the finite element (FE) method to compare them with Abaqus's practical experiments to predict damage during the tensile test. To simulate damage models, interlaminar and intralaminar damage, were used to study initiation and propagation of the samples failure. Results show that the experimental and numerical investigations of the repaired samples have a significant effect on the mechanical properties and failure behavior of the holed and stepped plates compared with unrepaired samples. Also, maximum stress and strain are concentrated around and on both sides of the hole, while the most significant damage occurs around the hole and the axial direction.

Opis:
The results of finite element analysis of large machined rotor fastened into heavy precise lathe are reported. Many design changes are simulated to improve the dynamic rigidity of the machining. Three radial eigenmodes detrimental to the accuracy were revealed: rotor-stock bending at 17.7 Hz (“half-wave”), rotor-lathe bending at 36.1 Hz (“full-wave”), and “support rocking” at 68.1 Hz. The frequency response functions and dynamic rigidities were evaluated. Three compliance issues were revealed: angular flexibility of the spindle console, low stiffness of the lathe bed (with boots), and an excessively slender tailstock. It is proposed to transform the spindle chuck into a table with additional hydrostatic backing, fill the bed cavities with concrete, and redesign the tailstock as a counter-spindle unit. This will decrease the amplitude of the main rotor resonance by 6.3 times and upshift the frequency near two-fold from 17.7 to 35 Hz. The renovated lathe should be able to machine a rotor without a lunette system or overriding the main resonant frequency.

A section of fuselage skin with dimension 30 x 200 mm was subjected to numerical study and loaded by skew bending (Fig. 3). The thickness of the skin was 0,6 mm, the length of a leg of an angle “L” profile stringer was 12 mm with 1mm thickness. The angle of inclination α of the load plane to the skin plane varies in the range from 10° to 90° with 10° increment. The elastic - plastic material model of D16T aluminum alloy was used in simulations of the fuselage skin as well as for “L” and “C” profile stringers. In the material model description damage of aluminum alloy was taken into account. An adhesive layer with thickness of 0,1mm was modeled using cohesive elements with the failure mode depending on the shear strength and the tensile strength. The paper presents a comparative analysis of the considered structural elements with application of the unsymmetrical “L” profile or the symmetrical “C” profile with the same cross section area. All numerical studies were performed in Abaqus program. Finally, one can conclude that the stiffness of the structural element with application of the symmetrical “C” profile stringer is stronger, whereas the mechanical response of both versions of the hybrid joint significantly depends on the angle of load inclination α.

The values of the resultant forces acting on the cutting teeth of BWEs can either be calculated or determined using experimental methods. The stresses and deformations of the teeth during the cutting process are influenced by their positioning on the excavator bucket, which is determined by the fitting mode of the teeth. In this paper, the stresses and deformations in the case of an existing tooth holder are analysed and a new type of tooth holder is proposed, using SolidWorks® software for this analysis.

Opis:
The main design parameters that impact the fatigue of components are geometry, material and loading. Simulation with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and tests on a vibrating table are often used to understand the dynamic behaviour of components and thus validate those items. Accelerated tests are used for the mission profile and test definition, as described in GAM-EG-13, MIL-STD-810F and RTCA DO-160E. The shock response spectrum (SRS) and the extreme response spectrum (ERS) allow for a comparison of the power spectrum density (PSD) and the acceleration factor applied in terms of fatigue severity through the fatigue damage spectrum (FDS). In addition, the hypothesis of linear damage accumulation enables the combination of several events for specifying a mission profile. Ultimately, the mission profile, which represents a usage that might span over several years, can be reduced to a shorter duration with a damage extraction technique. This is particularly useful for the definition of vibrating table specifications. An advantage of the virtual vibrating table is the reduction of the number of prototypes and the understanding of failure modes. To achieve this objective, finite element analysis in the frequency domain (harmonic analysis) is used and the structural stress response is evaluated with a PSD loading. A statistical model of rainflow allows assessing the damage on the components. The presentation also shows the effects of the damping factor on damage results. To achieve accurate results and define a Digital Twin, the correlation between test results and the finite element analysis is fundamental. Experimental modal analysis, based on the measured acceleration responses, helps to validate calculated modal frequencies and to assess the damping for each mode. This study shows the importance and the sensitivity on damping of the structural response, and in turn on fatigue.

Load bearing system simulation is provided for a huge lathe to be renovated. Static and modal analyses are done by FEM. Focus was centerline rising, needed for larger rotor shaft machining. Forces between shaft and three supports were applied. Shaft static stiffness is lowered at 1.15 times only for 600 mm centerline rising. Supports have lost its rigidity at 1.42 times. Concrete pouring into bed cavities is recommended for supports flexibility limitation such as tailstock reinforcement. Robustness of bottom resonances is revealed both for rotor shaft (14.5-18.2 Hz) and supports (42.7-55.4 Hz). Centerline rising is allowed on 300 mm at least. It gives possibility to machine extremely large (up to ø2750 mm) shafts.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of the conducted tests of torsional stiffness of the VOSCO S106 passenger car, as well as the validation process of these tests by means of numerical analyzes using the FEM finite element method. The most important element of the vehicle structure is the part of the spatial frame or the safety cage. Engine, brake system, fuel system and steering system, suspension as well as body and parts, their mounting nodes, hinges, locks, etc. are attached to the frame. The frame must therefore have adequate strength to protect the driver in the event of a tipover or impact. The frame is usually made of steel pipes with the prescribed dimensions and strength according to regulations. The torsional stiffness of the vehicle chassis has a significant influence on its driveability and therefore is an important parameter to measure. In this article, the torsional stiffness of the vehicle frame is calculated experimentally, which was then verified by finite element analysis (FEM) using the Altair HyperWorks program.

A suitable material means the applied material has to deal with environmental conditions. Finding the appropriate material applied to the collapsible pot hauler; can be determined using a Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) approach. After selecting the proper material, the collapsible pot hauler simulates the material stress using the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) simulation. The material for the new model of collapsible pot hauler was selected using the WSM method. The material with the highest rank (selected) is AISI 304, with a preference value of 3.58. The static strength simulation using the FEA method utilizing Solidworks Software shows that the yield strength value is still below the material properties, which a maximum value is 200. MPa, the material safety factor is the minimum value above one, which is 1.24 on the line spool plate shafts. It means that the material AISI 304 is safe to be applied to the collapsible pot hauler.

Opis:
Featured with a higher velocity, increased power handling capability, and better aging behavior, surface transverse wave (STW) shows more promising prospects than Rayleigh wave nowadays in various sensing applications. The need to design, optimize, and fabricate the related devices motivates the development of modeling and simulation. For this reason, a three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) simulation of STW on quartz, considering the crystal cut angle and the electrode effects, is presented in this study. Firstly, we investigated the effects of quartz’s cut angle on the generated waves. Here, the polarized displacements were analyzed to distinguish the wave modes. Secondly, the investigations of the electrode effects on the polarized displacement, phase velocity, and electromechanical coupling factor (K2) were carried out, for which different material and thickness configurations for the electrodes were considered. Thirdly, to examine the excitation conditions of the generated waves, the admittance responses were inspected. The results showed that not only the crystal cut angle but also the density and the acoustic impedance of the interdigital transducer (IDT) material have a strong influence on the excited waves. This article is the first to analyze STWs considering quartz’s cut angle and electrode effect through a 3D FE model. It could provide a helpful and easy way to design, optimize, and fabricate the related surface acoustic wave devices.

Praca przedstawia wyniki analiz sprężystych MES i szacowania trwałości zmęczeniowej rozciąganej tarczy prostokątnej osłabionej otworami.
The paper presents the results of elastic FE analyses and estimations of fatigue life of a tensile rectangular plate weakened by the presence of holes. The distances between the holes were determined by means of the SADSF method. Two cases were considered: when the holes are arranged in a row perpendicularly to the direction of load, and parallel to this direction. In the case of holes lying in a plane perpendicular to the load direction, the analyses have shown that the best minimal distances between the holes are very close to those obtained by using the SADSF method. When the hole spacing is decreased below the dimensions determined by this method, one observes a rapid growth of stress concentration factor and a drop of fatigue life. In the second case, however, one does not observe such strong effects. As the hole spacing decreases, stress concentration factor continuously drops down, and fatigue life increases.

This paper describes a numerically efficient method for determining the electrical parameters of axial field permanent magnet machine (AFPM). The presented method aims to accurately determine the back EMF waveform and self-inductance coefficients, while maintaining possibly low computational complexity, which is crucial in case of incorporation of the method in numerical optimization procedure of AFPM construction. The described algorithm is based on 2D FEM with several simplifications. The obtained results have been compared with full 3D FEA conducted with Ansys/Maxwell software, and confirmed by measurements. The result shows that presented method ensures satisfactory accuracy as well as computational time performance.

Opis:
Praca przedstawia rezultaty projektowania metodą SADSF oraz wyniki liniowych analiz MES i szacowania trwałości zmęczeniowej metodą odkształceń lokalnych pasm rozciąganych z otworem w części centralnej. Z użyciem metody SADSF zbudowano całą serię rozwiązań pasm spełniających założone warunki brzegowe i posiadających otwór w części centralnej. Przeprowadzone analizy potwierdziły dobre własności zaprojektowanych elementów, a otrzymane rozwiązania wskazały takie sposoby ich konstruowania, które dają niskie koncentracje naprężenia i dużą trwałość zmęczeniową.
The paper presents the results of design, by the SADSF method, of tensioned strips with holes in the central part, and the results of linear FEM analyses. Estimation of fatigue life by local strain method is also presented. The essential aim of the work is to confirm the usefulness of the SADSF method, which assumes the condition of equalized effort in limit state, to designing elements working in elastic rage, and subjected to loads variable in time. The SADSF method is one of few methods which make it possible to effectively solve the design problems, also in the cases of very complex structures. Then, it can be competitive to very advanced methods of the so-called topology optimization. The SADSF method, unlike the latter ones, does not require applying laborious optimization procedures, and can be easily used in engineering design. Moreover, it can be applied already at the moment when only boundary conditions are known. Using the SADSF method, we have constructed a whole series of solutions of strips having a hole in the central part, which satisfy the assumed boundary condition. The carried-out analyses have confirmed good qualities of the designed elements, and the obtained solutions have shown how to select such design methods, which give low stress concentration and high fatigue life.

Silicon <111> crystal is one of the crystal orientations, which shows potential for application in micro device developments of pressure diaphragms for measurement purposes. To date, no theoretical basis has been examined to develop the deflections for computational analysis purposes [1]. This paper presents the development of the diaphragm deflections for Silicon <111> Crystal in Cylindrical coordinates system. The Silicon <111> crystal possesses transverse isotropic properties. Thus, an anisotropic thin plate theory is used here to develop the plate deflection. A numerical example is given to compare the theoretical results with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) results.

In this paper, the deep drawing process of an automobile panel in order to select the appropriate amount of parameters has been investigated. The parameters include friction between the blank and die, blank width and length, blank thickness and gap between the blank and blank-holder. A multi-layer artificial neural network (ANN) trained by finite element analyses (FEA) is applied in order to improve forming parameters and achieve a better quality. As the FEA results are used to train the ANN, the FEA results have been verified by three experiments. Finally, an appropriate amount of each parameter is predicted by the trained ANN and a FEA has been done based on the ANN prediction to evaluate the accuracy of the trained ANN. Moreover, it is shown that the ANN could predict results within a 10 percent error. In addition, the proposed method for prediction of the appropriate parameters (ANN) is confirmed by comparing with the Taguchi design of experiment prediction. It is also shown that the model obtained by the former method has lower errors than the latter one. In this study, the Taguchi model is used to evaluate the effect of parameters on tearing and wrinkling. Based on the Taguchi design of experiment, while the blank length is the most effective parameter on tearing, the maximum height of wrinkles on flanged parts mainly depends on the blank thickness.

Mufflers are popular in the suppression of noise levels coming from various machinery. The most common parameters for the evaluation of the performance of mufflers are transmission loss, noise level, and insertion loss. The transmission loss is evaluated for tapered side outlet muffler using finite element analysis without considering the fluid-structure interaction. This study includes analytical modelling and acoustic modelling of the side outlet muffler and transmission loss is in excellent agreement with the reference paper. The feasibility of the acoustic model is also verified with the experimental work on simple expansion chamber muffler. The same finite element analysis is extended for the tapered side outlet muffler. The transmission loss of the tapered side outlet muffler in the given frequency range is found 8.96 dB better than the side outlet muffler. The acoustic pressure level and sound pressure level contours for the tapered side outlet muffler give a clear picture of wave propagation inside the muffler. The effect of the cut-off frequency on the transmission loss of the tapered side outlet muffler can be seen from the contours. This study can be helpful in the determination of the performance of the mufflers in terms of transmission loss, the performance of mufflers above cut-off frequency, and design improvements in the muffler to avoid the higher-order modes of the sound wave.

Opis:
Finite element analysis (FEA) on a new fabrication miniature composite fuselage structure under axial compression loading is presented. ABAQUS/Explicit simulation is employed to predict the crushing behaviour and mechanical strength from the initial compression loading to the final failure mode. A woven C-glass fiber/epoxy 200 g/m2 composite laminated with orthotropic elastic material properties is used for the fuselage model. This proposed model is established to observe the crushing load and collapse modes under an axial compression impact. Adhesively bonded joint progression is generated using the technique of cohesive element. Various angles of the lamina are deliberated in the analysis to acquire and imagine the effect of the angle of orientation. Composite lamina angles are examined and validated using FEA modelling as a numerical parametric study. The results show that the finite element analysis using ABAQUS/Explicit can reproduce satisfactorily the load-deflection response. It can be concluded that special cases of antisymmetric lamination are found to have the strongest resistance to the applied load.
Pracę poświęcono analizie elementów skończonych w zastosowaniu do badań modelu miniaturowego kadłuba wykonanego z laminatu i poddanego osiowemu ściskaniu. Przeprowadzono symulacje numeryczne z użyciem komercyjnego oprogramowania ABAQUS/Explicit w celu określenia wytrzymałości kompozytu oraz zbadania przebiegu procesu zgniatania, aż do uzyskania ostatecznej postaci zniszczenia próbki. Na materiał kadłuba wybrano kompozyt w włóknem szklanym typu C o gęstości 200 g/m2 i właściwościach ortotropowych. Podczas badań obserwowano pojawianie się kolejnych postaci wgnieceń, aż do zupełnej utraty stateczności układu przy udarowym obciążeniu ściskającym. Zastosowano metodę elementów kohezyjnych do analizy zmian w adhezyjnym połączeniu warstw laminatu.

This paper deals with development of a computer simulation procedure, as a substitute for physical rollover test, to evaluate bus body structure crashworthiness. It is expected that, when completed, this procedure can be proposed to the authority to enhance its current type approval procedure related to crashworthiness which is merely based on qualitative and empirical field experiences without performing real rollover test. This procedure will enable afirmer base for judging the crashworthiness of bus structure. The proposed computer simulation procedure is being developed based on ECE R66 which allows partial bus body structure to be physically tested. In this case, sections of bus super structure built up from at least two bays are used to represent the whole structure. A finite element method computer program capable of dealing with elastic plastic calculation is employed to calculate deflection of a bay structure under incremental quasi-static loading until residual space limit is reached. From the obtained force-deflection curve, the strain energy absorption capacity of the structure will be evaluated if it is large enough to absorb potential energy resulting from rollover test. A bus body superstructure sample from a representative domestic bus manufacturer is used as test cases.

The aim of the present study is to investigate the residual ultimate strength characteristics of box girders with variable cracks under torsional loading. A series of finite element models are established by changing the crack length and crack angle using a commercial FEA program, ABAQUS. The cracks are located at the center and torques are applied on both ends of the box beam. Different aspect ratios are considered to evaluate the effects of cracks on box beams for various widths and lengths of panels in the middle yielding region. The accuracy of the nonlinear FEA results is veri?ed by a comparison with previous predicted formulas. Based on the FEA results, the relationship between the residual ultimate strength and crack parameters can be indicated in a function with period of in the form of Fourier series.

This report provides a design analysis of a replacement’s shifter mechanism for the 2014 model JCU Motorsports FSAE vehicle. Common FSAE shifter mechanisms were researched and reviewed to provide a better understanding of the needs required. A design approach was constructed to ultimately design a mechanism that conformed to all existing constraints and FSAE rules. Realistic load cases were identified and employed in the FEA analysis of the design. Supporting hand calculations were developed, proving the analysis to be accurate. Results showed the shifter mechanism does not fail under infinite life, with some parts of the design having a reasonably high safety factor, ensuring stability.

Opis:
Background: This proof of principle study aims to investigate the applicability of finite element analysis (FEA) in Oral and Maxillofacial (OMF) surgery, by studying the effect of mandibular body height and osteosynthesis positioning on unilateral mandibular body fractures based on Champy’s technique. Material and methods: Mandibles made of polyurethane foam (Synbone®), with heights of 18, 14, and 10 mm were used to create a FEA model with a unilateral straight-line fracture, fixated with a standard commercially available 6-hole 2 mm titanium miniplate. Two different FEA programs were used for the comparison, namely: Solidworks and Comsol Multiphysics. The FEA outcomes were compared with a series of mechanical tests with polymeric models fixed in a customised device and loaded onto a mechanical test bench. Results: First, the study illustrated that the optimal plate position appeared to be the upper border. Second, lower mandibular height increases instability and requires a stronger osteosynthesis system. Conclusions: FEA’s and polymeric model testing outcomes of unilateral non-comminuted fractures were highly comparable with current opinions of mandibular fracture management. The promising outcome of this study makes it worthwhile to do more extensive analysis in order to determine whether FEA alone is sufficient for optimisation of fracture management.

This paper describes further investigations that have been carried out to make the proposed procedure [5] becomes more reliable to be practically applied as a requirement in bus type approval. One important aspect highlighted in this paper is an effort to improve the accuracy of the FEA model by taking into account detailed construction of bus superstructure. It worth to note that, based on survey carried out on several bus manufacturers, the detailed construction may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. As a case study, a bus superstructure from a prominent manufacturer was chosen as a sample. Energy absorbing capacity of a bus superstructure section consisting of four bays including rear entrance door, emergency door and rear end was investigated through elastic-plastic finite element model. Incremental quasy static load according to ECE R66 was applied, subsequently to the right and left cantrail to obtain load deflection curve. Then the energy absorbing capacity of the structure when residual space limit was reached was evaluated through derived energy deflection curve. Essential components of the bus superstructure governing its energy absorbing capacity will be discussed. Modeling strategy in dealing with elastic-plastic analysis for such a rather complex structure is also highlighted.

Purpose: This study introduces a new approximated analytical solution of the free vibration analysis to evaluate the natural frequencies of functionally graded rectangular sandwich plates with porosities. Design/methodology/approach: The kinematic relations are developed based on the classical plate theory (CPT), and the governing differential equation is derived by employing the Rayleigh-Ritz approximate method. The FGM plate is assumed made of an isotropic material that has an even distribution of porosities. The materials properties varying smoothly in the thickness direction only according to the power-law scheme. Findings: The influences of changing the gradient index, porosity distribution, boundary conditions, and geometrical properties on the free vibration characteristics of functionally graded sandwich plates are analysed. Research limitations/implications: A detailed numerical investigation is carried out using the finite element method with the help of ANSYS 2020 R2 software to validate the results of the proposed analytical solution. Originality/value: The results with different boundary conditions show the influence of porosity distribution on the free vibration characteristics of FG sandwich plates. The results indicated a good agreement between the approximated method such as the Rayleigh-Ritz and the finite element method with an error percentage of no more than 5%.

The nature of environmental interactions, as well as large dimensions and complex structure of marine offshore objects, make designing, building and operation of these objects a great challenge. This is the reason why a vast majority of investment cases of this type include structural analysis, performed using scaled laboratory models and complemented by extended computer simulations. The present paper focuses on FEM modelling of the offshore wind turbine supporting structure. Then problem is studied using the modal analysis, sensitivity analysis, as well as the design of experiment (DOE) and response surface model (RSM) methods. The results of modal analysis based simulations were used for assessing the quality of the FEM model against the data measured during the experimental modal analysis of the scaled laboratory model for different support conditions. The sensitivity analysis, in turn, has provided opportunities for assessing the effect of individual FEM model parameters on the dynamic response of the examined supporting structure. The DOE and RSM methods allowed to determine the effect of model parameter changes on the supporting structure response.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of bone mineral density (BMD) on the stress distribution in pelvic-hip complex (PHC) model which included bone structures and soft tissues. Bone mass changes in osteoporosis and osteopenia were considered in this analysis. In addition, the relations between force direction and stress distribution causing PHC fractures were determined. Methods: This paper presents the development and validation of a detailed 3D finite element model with high anatomical fidelity of the PHC and BMD changes in trabecular and cortical bones, modelled based on CT scans. 10 kN loading was induced on a model consisting of 8 ligaments, the pelvis, sacrum, femur in front and side directions. Results: For validation, the results of this model were compared to physiological stress in standing position and previous results with high-energy crashes under side impact load. Analysis of side-impact indicated the influence of BMD on femoral neck fractures, acetabular cartilage and sacroiliac joint delaminations. Front-impact analysis revealed the inferior pubic ramus, femoral neck fractures and soft tissue injuries, i.e., acetabular cartilage and symphysis pubis in osteoporosis and osteopenia. Conclusions: The elaborated PHC model enables effective prediction of pelvis injuries in high-energy trauma, according to Young-Burgess classification, and the determination of the influence of BMD reduction on pelvis trauma depending on force direction. The correlation between BMD and stress distribution causing varying injuries was determined.

A new type of dental implant was designed as multi-component mainly including inset and abutment between which a gap was introduced to guide the force to transmit from the cancellous bone to cortical bone, with the intention to lower the stress peak at cortical bone. By the way of finite element analysis (FEA) associated with advanced computer tomography (CT) and 3D model reconstruction technology to construct precise mandible model, biomechanical aspects of implant were investigated. Compared with traditional implant that created stress dominantly at cortical bone, stress peak at the implant/bone interface in the cervical cortex decreased sharply (about 51%) for new type of implant. Furthermore, varying implant shape and gap dimensions to optimize the design of this new implant was performed. Optimization results revealed that: 1) screwed cylindrical implant is superior to tapered, stepped and smooth cylindrical implant in effectively decreasing the stress peak of bone; 2) deepening and widening gap would contribute to the decline of stress peak, but at the cost of break and destruction of the inset; 3) suitable gap size with the depth of 7mm and width of 0.3mm would be applicable. This work may provide reference forclinical application of dental implant.

In the last decade the development of cross-border cooperation in the context of economic integration and internationalization processes becoming increasingly import ant for Ukraine, which follows the Western vector of integration. Systematic development of cross-border cooperation is not possible without considering all of its components and levels. The article highlights a vision of complicated economic phenomenon – the cross-border cooperation of enterprises, which combines the two important economic categories – cross-border cooperation and entrepreneurship by its self. There considered the fact that cross-border cooperation is an important tool for economic development and competitiveness increase of enterprises, located in border areas.

Opis:
Purpose: In this study, the free vibration analysis of functionally graded materials (FGMs) sandwich beams having different core metals and thicknesses is considered. The variation of material through the thickness of functionally graded beams follows the power-law distribution. The displacement field is based on the classical beam theory. The wide applications of functionally graded materials (FGMs) sandwich structures in automotive, marine construction, transportation, and aerospace industries have attracted much attention, because of its excellent bending rigidity, low specific weight, and distinguished vibration characteristics. Design/methodology/approach: A mathematical formulation for a sandwich beam comprised of FG core with two layers of ceramic and metal, while the face sheets are made of homogenous material has been derived based on the Euler–Bernoulli beam theory. Findings: The main objective of this work is to obtain the natural frequencies of the FG sandwich beam considering different parameters. Research limitations/implications: The important parameters are the gradient index, slenderness ratio, core metal type, and end support conditions. The finite element analysis (FEA), combined with commercial Ansys software 2021 R1, is used to verify the accuracy of the obtained analytical solution results. Practical implications: It was found that the natural frequency parameters, the mode shapes, and the dynamic response are considerably affected by the index of volume fraction, the ratio as well as face FGM core constituents. Finally, the beam thickness was dividing into frequent numbers of layers to examine the impact of many layers' effect on the obtained results. Originality/value: It is concluded, that the increase in the number of layers prompts an increment within the frequency parameter results' accuracy for the selected models. Numerical results are compared to those obtained from the analytical solution. It is found that the dimensionless fundamental frequency decreases as the material gradient index increases, and there is a good agreement between two solutions with a maximum error percentage of no more than 5%.
