Opis:
The site of Świerszczów 28 was discovered in 2012 during field works connected with the construction of the Hrubieszów ring-road. The site is located on the border between Horodło Bar (Grzęda Horodelska) and Hrubieszów Basin (Kotlina Hrubieszowska). As a result of excavations, 221 non-portable features were found, of which 81 were dated based on artefacts found in their fills. The oldest phase of settlement is represented by artefacts connected with the Rzeszów phase of the Malice culture. Nine features yielded a series of 66 fragments of vessels (the majority of them were found in one feature, i.e. pit no. 243–53 sherds) which, in terms of technology, belong to the category of medium- or thick-walled pottery. Pottery forms represent vessel types typical of the Malice culture: biconical vessels – both pots and amphorae, profiled bowls and beakers on hollow feet. Vessels were decorated with ornamentation motives arranged in horizontal bands. The most typical ornaments were notches (corrugations), fingernails notches, “pinched” impressions and fingertips imprints. Knobs and plastic belts also appeared. Flint artefacts are represented by only 11 specimens. Two of them merit particular attention: an end-scraper with an oval front from feature no. 243 and a blade found in the layer of humus. Nine artefacts were made of Volhynian flint, the remaining two are burnt. The traces of the Malice culture occupation at Świerszczów 28 site are connected with a small settlement. The analyzed collection of artefacts is linked with the oldest segment of the Rzeszów phase (IIa) of the Malice culture, connected with trans-Carpathian influences from the proto-Tiszapolgár culture and phase A of the Tiszapolgár culture, which in terms of absolute chronology corresponds to the last quarter of the fourth millennium BC.

Opis:
Count Michał Tyszkiewicz (1828–1897) was one of the most renowned collectors of the ancient classical art at the end of the 19th century. His interest in archaeology and ancient art was developed during his travel through Egypt in 1861. His Journal of the Travel to Egypt and Nubia, fortunately found in 1992 in Poznań, recounts this journey. From Egypt, Michał Tyszkiewicz brought a collection of antiquities, estimated to have comprised c. 800 objects; today, over a half of them can be found in museums in Paris (Louvre), Warsaw, Vilnius, Kaunas, and Moscow. The majority of the objects originated from excavations conducted by the count, particularly in Thebes (Luxor area), by virtue of an official licence granted to him exceptionally by Mohamed Said Pasha – the then head of the Egyptian state. The present article discusses the circumstances of granting of this permission in the period when a strict state monopoly was imposed on archaeological investigations and presents the course of the excavations along with their results.

Opis:
The dramatic history of the medieval fortified settlement, located between the Sluch’ and Goryn’ Rivers (near the village of Horodyshche, Shepetivka District, Khmelnytskyi Region, Ukraine), destroyed and burned as a result of Tatar-Mongol raids in the middle of the 13th c., gave rise to the appearance of a cultural layer which is unique as regards its abundant finds. During the excavations led by Mikhail Karger in 1957–1964, almost all the territory of the site was investigated (3.6 ha) and many thousands of archaeological and anthropological finds were collected. M. Karger planned to publish a monograph based on the research into these collections undertaken by the members of his expedition team, but his plan did not reach fruition. Over the last sixty years, the materials have often been referred to by specialists. Today the bibliography relating to the analysis and interpretation of the materials discovered during the excavations includes dozens of articles. The rather disjointed nature of the materials published so far, and the random and incomplete selection of finds for detailed investigation have meant that the presentation of the site as a whole has not been a well-integrated one and interpretations have often been inconsistent. Recently a project has been drawn up, enabling a team from the Institute for the History of Material Culture, to prepare the excavated materials for publication, supported by a grant from the Russian Foundation for Basic Research.

The article presents examples of the employment of various geodetic measuring tools used for a detailed inventory of lake basins and shorelines. The measurement and analysis covered three post-mining open pit excavations recultivated as water reservoirs: two in Krakow (Bagry Wielkie and Bagry Małe) and one in Piaseczno (Piaseczno Sulphur Mine). Attention was paid to the factors that reduce the accuracy of the inventory of some flooded post-mining excavations, which determine the degree of usefulness of the morphometric data set for later analyses. According to available estimates, only about one-third of all water reservoirs in Poland have detailed geodetic documentation in the form of bathymetric maps. This documentation usually does not include water reservoirs of anthropogenic origin formed after the flooding of post-mining excavations (mines: sand, gravel, clay, limestone, sulphur, aggregates, etc.). The authors suggest the introduction of a document known as a reservoir documentation card and the creation of a database covering all anthropogenic water reservoirs. Considering the water deficit in Poland, it may be necessary to develop a detailed database of water resources in the short term.

The analysis of an important drawback of the well known Hardening Soil model (HSM) is the main purpose of this paper. A special emphasis is put on modifying the HSM to enable an appropriate prediction of the undrained shear strength using a nonzero dilatancy angle. In this light, the paper demonstrates an advanced numerical finite element modeling addressed to practical geotechnical problems. The main focus is put on serviceability limit state analysis of a twin-tunnel excavation in London clay. The two-phase formulation for partially saturated medium, after Aubry and Ozanam, is used to describe interaction between soil skeleton and pore water pressure.

The last two decades is a time of extremely intensive rescue excavations, preceding great investments. This article is a contribution to the discussion over the way of research analyses of remains from settlement sites excavated on a large scale. The authors presented their viewpoints on the method of description of sources and approach to distinguishing settlement structures. The starting point for the separation of the different settlements episodes should be a chronological scheme of the local evolution developed on the basis of the analysed materials. Evolution trend analysis of mass materials, mainly ceramics, should be preceded by a reflection about depositional and post-depositional processes. For the sites that manifest themselves only on the surface, the most important role is played by the spatial analysis. The authors suggest that the level of detail of conclusions about spatial diversity of the site, especially separation of units and phases of development, should be directly proportional to the credibility of chronological determinations.

Opis:
In 5 March 2016, a resident of Przezmark announced the discovery of a hoard of 86 Roman denarii dating to the first and second century. The coins were located on the surface. From October 27 to November 2, 2016, archaeological research was carried out at the site of discovery. Seven denarii and two fragments of hand–crafted pottery from the period of Roman influence were discovered during the investigations. On October 27–28, 2017, another archaeological survey took place, during which an additional seven denarii were discovered. In total, 100 coins were recovered, which are currently in the Museum in Ostróda. The results of the excavations and field prospecting enable the interpretation of the site as a domestic space or cemetery to be ruled out, and the coin hoard is best understood as being concealed for economic or religious purposes.

The article is devoted to the presentation of pottery and sunken features of Neolithic cultures discovered at site 2 in Zagórze. The rich materials were acquired as a result of large-scale rescue excavations on the A4 motorway on the Wieliczka-Bochnia loess. 67,948 fragments of pottery were excavated, deposited in the fills of 1237 Neolithic features or in the so-called cultural layer. This material has been classified within the Linear Pottery culture (mainly its older Zofipole phase), the Malice culture (classical phase) and the Lengyel culture (Pleszów and Modlnica phase). On the said site, 11 long houses of the Linear Pottery culture and 4 houses of the Malice culture were discovered, while large clay pits, containing numerous ceramic materials, were connected with the Lengyel culture. Different ways of organising the settlement space by the inhabitants of these cultures were established.

The main purpose of this article is to present the possibilities of using non-invasive methods with special emphasis placed on the magnetic method as a solution to a crisis which has arisen in Polish archaeology. The growing numbers of artefacts in museum storage has increasingly raised a question about the legitimacy of research excavations. Widespread non-invasive prospecting may be a solution to the problem as it will allow to evaluate the state of preservation, the size and range of the positions and, as a result, to decide if excavations are necessary and desired. This is of extreme importance due to the limited research perspectives for some types of sites.

This article describes a measuring method used for monitoring deformations in wooden grating mining casings. It is intended, in particular, to determine the degree of deflection of load-bearing elements in relation to their original position. It was prepared especially to supplement the technical evaluation of wooden supporting casings in historic mines, underground sections of tourist routes, tunnels etc. The primary reason for the development of this problem were the designs prepared in recent years for large-scale grating constructions at Wieliczka Salt Mine and those for their reconstructions (strengthenings). The article describes the assumptions for the method proposed as well as the measurement system prepared. At Wieliczka Salt Mine two chambers with grating casings were selected and these were equipped with measuring devices. This paper presents the characteristics of these structures, the distribution of the devices installed and the course of the measuring process.

Opis:
Nonlinear soil-linear structure computational strategy is commonly accepted in the community of geotechnical engineers using advanced finite element software for solving complex soil-structure interaction problems. However, further design procedure of the structural elements is carried out using increased values of the computed elastic stress resultants. It is absolutely not clear whether this method is conservative and, therefore, whether safe or not. To tackle this problem, a fully consistent nonlinear analysis of a deep excavation protected by the diaphragm wall is analysed here. The subsoil is modelled using the Hardening Soil model, while reinforced concrete is modelled using the modified Lee-Fenves model enhanced by the Eurocode 2 (EC2)-compatible creep module, developed by the author. It is shown that the commonly used nonlinear soil-linear structure computational strategy may yield insufficient amount of reinforcement from the ultimate limit state (ULS) and serviceability limit state (SLS) points of view. A consistent and conservative method of combining fully nonlinear analysis and the rules imposed by the EC2 is proposed.

The paper presents the results of numerical calculations considering the gangway location during the drifting in the active roof fall zone of the underlaying seam. These calculations were the base of changing the gangway location in relation to the goaf. The presented solution is both safe and economical. Nowadays mining works points that this proposal of changing the gangway location influenced by the goaf zone is correct.

Opis:
In Poland, researchers have a very strong interest in archaeometallurgy, which, as presented in classical works, focuses on dating artefacts from the prehistoric and early medieval periods in the form of cast iron and copper castings. This study, extending the current knowledge, presents the results of a microstructure investigation into the findings from the Modern era dating back to the late Middle Ages. The investigated material was an object in the form of a heavy solid copper block weighing several kilograms that was excavated by a team of Polish archaeologists working under the direction of Ms Iwona Młodkowska-Przepiórowska during works on the marketplace in the city of Czestochowa during the summer of 2009. Pre-dating of the material indicates the period of the seventeenth century AD. The solid copper block was delivered in the form of a part shaped like a bell, named later in this work as a “kettlebell”. To determine the microstructure, the structural components, chemical composition, and homogeneity, as well as additives and impurities, investigations were carried out using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy including analysis of the chemical composition performed in micro-areas, and qualitative X-ray phase analysis in order to investigate the phase composition. Interpretation of the analytical results of the material’s microstructure will also help modify and/or develop new methodological assumptions to investigate further archaeometallurgical exhibits, throwing new light on and expanding the area of knowledge of the use and processing of seventeenth-century metallic materials.

Opis:
Przy pewnych uwarunkowaniach technologicznych kotwy gruntowe są podstawowym, a właściwie jedynym sposobem zapewnienia stateczności ścian wykopów głębokich. Dodatkowe trudności w montażu kotew gruntowych związane są m.in. z rozwojem inżynierii miejskiej, a w szczególności tzw. urbanistyki podziemnej, zajmującej się m.in. budową podziemnych tras komunikacyjnych, wielopoziomowych skrzyżowań, garaży podziemnych oraz głębokich fundamentów pod wysokie budynki.
Under certain technological conditions, earth anchors are the essential, or actually the only way to ensure stability of the walls of deep excavations.

Opis:
In the years 2005-2006, within courts of the Collegium Novum of the Jagiellonian University rescue excavations were carried out. As a result, remains of three historic buildings of the University were uncovered: Jerusalem Bursa (built in the years 1453-1456), Philosophers Bursa (erected before 1447), and the Academic Gymnasium (called Stare Classes from years 1589-1643). Archaeological analyses have also shown that before the rise of the Gothic dormitories in the second half of the fourteenth century an older brick buildings existed there, including the domus antiquioris Jherusalem, mentioned as early as 1431.

Opis:
The rescue excavations associated with the renovation of surfaces surrounding the Dominican Basilica of the Holy Trinity in Cracow were conducted in 2011-2012 in front of the church. This research confirmed the presence of a churchyard cemetery whose origins date back to the 12th century and led to the discovery of previously unknown relics of medieval architecture in the form of two pieces of the masonry foundation of the Gothic chapels and presumably pre-Dominican (or early-Dominican) church of the Holy Trinity as well as undisturbed culture layers from early mediaeval times. The research was carried out in close collaboration with researchers in architecture and art history; it enabled preliminary reconstruction of the plans of the discovered buildings. Petrographic analysis of building material and samples of mortars used provided information on mediaeval construction techniques. Human bone material was analyzed by anthropologists. As a result, the gender, age and health status of members of the mediaeval and modern populations of Cracow buried in the cemetery were determined. Geochemical studies also helped to assess the degree of land contamination related to the presence of the cemetery. A detailed analysis of the cultural layer representing the residue of the open settlement along with its coeval economical structures was carried out. Layer dating was based on a formal analysis of the ceramic material. Osteological research of the animal bone material and palaeobotanical studies of soil samples taken from settlement layers allowed clarification of the nature of the settlement.

Opis:
Excavations at site 1 in Witów, in the years 2004 – 2006, were a continuation of rescue excavations started in 2002. Excavations covered three areas most likely to be destroyed. At the foot of the promontory (trench 1) a sequence of cultural strata dating from the Neolithic (Funnel Beaker culture) through the Bronze Age (Lusatian culture) until the Roman period was unveiled. In trench 2 excavation works were continued on the remains of fortifications (embankment with elements of wooden structures) connected with the Lusatian culture. Within the trench no. 3 next settlement features of the Lusatian culture and early Medieval skeletal graves were discovered. The most interesting discoveries in the reporting period include the Lusatian burials in trapezium-like pits, unearthed in the trench no. 3. Due to its equipment (including ceramics of the “knob” style) and 14C dating, they should be tied with the origins of the Lusatian culture. Other interesting findings were also silver coins (denarii) from a Medieval cemetery. Research in seasons 2004 - 2006 proved most of the conclusions reached in previous seasons: the multicultural nature of the site, high intensity of the Lusatian culture settlement, and the presence of fortifications of this culture.
