Opis:
This research is trying to explore the perceptions and beliefs of young ethnic Macedonians regarding the EU, European and ethnic/national identity situated in an ambivalent societal context – an exposure to pro-European educational goals, together with the recently emerging reluctance towards joining the Union. 72 students with different study backgrounds at the age between 19 and 22 participated in the study. In 10 focus groups, formed on the basis of homogeneity of the field of study, they were discussing their views on the EU concept and their reflections on the congruities and incongruities between their national identity and the EU identity. Results show that respondents tend to idealize the concept of EU and are willing to accept European citizenship. On the other hand, some are skeptical and question the possibility of developing European identity and citizenship because they perceive a serious gap between the European values and the values that are dominant in the current public and political discourse.

Opis:
Identity as a theoretical concept in social sciences has evolved from a status of derivative importance into an essential and autonomous notion performing at present an important role that explains some processes of the contemporary world. According to Renata Dopierała, generally identity can be defined as a reflective attitude of an individual to himself, created by the necessity of self-characteristic building a system of ideas, opinions, convictions, etc., that corresponds with the given social context. However, the answer to the question: What is identity?, is not so obvious as some can expect. The relationship between identity, interests, preferences, and loyalty is also not so clear. Shortly speaking, identity can be also perceived as a self-conception rooted in the society, our attitude and relation to others. Its integral parts are two main components: individual and social.

The main goal of the article is approaching the peculiar character of Leszek Kołakowski’s textual activities. Polish philosopher used the most important textes of European culture (especially the Bible) to create his own works — renarration of myth was a vehicle to understanding contemporary problems. His compositions were also connected with oral tradition and philosophy of dialogue. Those choices had also genological effects — in Kołakowski’s litterary and popularizing output prevailed lectures, tales, sermons, parables and allegories.

The issue of the national and the European identities is the subject of many specialized discussions as far as problematic social-political situation is concerned, which is the consequence of the migration crisis as well as Brexit – not only in the European Union, but also in its member states. The paper presents the research in which 484 students of Slovak secondary schools and universities participated; the results are interpreted in the context of creating the regional, national and European identities. According to the research results in the form of respondents’ opinions, the importance of the European identity features can be characterised as follows: high degree of legal protection, democratic values, single currency, collective political system, “unity in diversity” principle. The majority of respondents connects the personal identity mainly with the national identity, and subsequently with the European identity, while the collective identities are perceived as complementary, not contradictory. The age factor represents one of the most important variables. Therefore, we assume that the educational influence aimed to strengthen the European identity will prove more effective in the youngest individuals.

Opis:
This article addresses two challenges of the globalization process: Europe-an identity and state sovereignty. National identity is often omitted and replaced by European identity. However, two important elements have been forgotten in identifying the European identity: 1. essential foundation of Christianity and its values; 2. importance of national identity in the lives of people and societies, because they are always entangled in a particular national community and culture. The issue of sovereignty, that is autonomy and self-determination of individual states, is increasingly an important challenge for Europe. Sovereignty is increasingly limited in the name of extending its scope and exercising it jointly with others within the framework of supranational institutions. The traditional vision of national sovereignty is considered obsolete and replaced by the concept of shared, pluralistic, multidimensional and functional sovereignty. Three points are important: 1. there are some leaders in EU who dictate the tone of the other states and try to impose certain solutions; 2. some state leaders declare openly that they will protect the interests of their own country and such declarations are moreover confirmed in specific decisions and actions; 3. sovereign nation state is also a natural space for political debate and a first school of democracy.

The idea of European federation keeps recurring in politicians’ and intellectuals’ discourses on the future of the European Union. The logic of global rivalry of “large territories” favors this in particular, as it somehow forces Europe’s states to enter into a tighter integration if they want to realize their politics. The biggest challenge which the Union faces is the problem of leadership, understood both in the context of internal policy and relationally towards the surrounding. The problem, however, is the diversity of the member states and the unrelenting tension between particular concern about a national interest and European universalism. European federation sensu stricto, just because of this diversity has still been a utopian project. The future of the European Union most probably lies in a new intermediate model, as unique as the European Commonwealths used to be in the 1950s.

The author aims to reconstruct Miłosz’s ideas of his own sense of belonging to Central and Eastern part of the old continent, of ‘the other Europe’, that in the writer’s memory served as an important reference point, even in the periods of depression or feeling of loss of identity caused by long emigration. Having analysed the convictions expressed by Miłosz in Native Realm, the author of the article aims to present the specific way of viewing the Nobel Laureate’s concept of Polish identity as well as Euro-pean identity.

As a young teacher and researcher, the prospective of introducing western philosophical themes to a public of students from a non-western country, came in 2016 as a once-in-a lifetime opportunity, which I met with great enthusiasm. However, as in any situation involving pre-conceived expectations, facing and dealing with the real situation on the ground opens up a pathway for a closer understanding of both the new culture explored, a perception of one’s own limits and the willingness to overcome them. The following lines are intended to cover the way my approach to teaching to a Chinese public has evolved from pre-conceptions and empty enthusiasm to an attitude of pedagogical creativity in identifying and presenting the key topics that would attract my students’ attention. As I will show, students’ expectations were to approach the western ideas not directly, but via a more complex process of being acquainted with the major historical and cultural movements in Europe and the western world. This meant the involvement in the teaching process of a wider number of elements taken not only from philosophy but from other humanistic disciplines.

The article aims to refer to issues related to the understanding of national identity, assuming that the basic reference point for the theoretical analysis is the model of universally recognised European values. Attempting to concretise the concept of national identity and identify determinants affecting its shaping, reference was made to the problem of identifying Poles with European values. Since the problem of national identity was often the object of interest of researchers, especially during the intensification of integration processes in Europe and the impact of such phenomena as globalisation, migration or development of mass culture with a cosmopolitan character, there were observed increased anxieties of various nations encouraging underlining their own “separateness”, and also greater identification with the national community. The author does not treat this phenomenon as disturbing because, according to the latest trends related to the understanding of European identity, it can crystallise as the sum of the identity of European national countries.

Among the crucial matters of this paper, we focus on the Italian context about the necessity to realize a strategy of integrated communication able to involve European Institutions altogether with national and local ones, and to make citizens knowledgeable about the European Union’s policies.

Opis:
This essay tries to discuss three possible models of common European identity based on shared political values, shared economic interests and shared cultural heritage in our actual situation when Europe is suffering from many crises or their aftermaths (Eurozone crisis, migration crisis or Brexit crisis). The first non-exclusive “thin” identity model is based on many essentially contested concepts (in the essay demonstrated on the concept of human dignity) and its major weakness lies in the fact that many of these values are eroding in our practices, not only in the “new” EU member states. The approach based on shared pragmatic interests does not produce strong moral commitments, but the real problem of this model is that since the beginning of 1970s one of the truly European “innovations” – its post-war model of welfare state – is put into question (The essay tries to demonstrate it using the theory of Wolfgang Streeck). The common cultural heritage model that can produce “thick” identity is on the first sight the most difficult to build because of the almost insurmountable plurality between European cultures. However, the shared culture can produce cosmopolitan “identity in diversity”, but only if material conditions for the creation of this “fragile” or “delicate” identity model are created in some form of reinvented welfare state that could liberate us from many fears we have.

Opis:
The sense of identity across the European Union (EU) has become an increasingly controversial and often discussed issue over the past decade. Nowadays, growing number of analysts argue that the progress of the European integration project will be impeded by the lack of such an identity. Questions regarding the nature of European identity, especially the search for a new European identity, its relations with other identities, and a possible loss of national identities, are frequently asked in the context of the EU enlargement. These questions are discussed and different views exist in EU member states. Although initiated especially by opponents of EU integration, they are also becoming burning issues in the candidate countries. Often, public opinion in these countries fears that their national identities will be lost or, at least, substantially weakened with their full integration into the EU. There are many debates on the notion of the unity of the European civilization. In this context, Turkish integration with the European Union is the most challenging issue. Its Muslim population could change the concept of European identity. In this paper, we would like to analyze the concept of European identity, the perspective of the integration of Turkey into the EU, and its ideological dimension. It is also important to analyze the phenomenon of the Euroskepticism in Turkey in this context.

This paper uses communicative-pragmatic analysis and a corpus-based method to investigate multidimensional axiological interpretation of Europäische Identität notion as a unifying political concept. The study focuses on European identity discourse as presented in German mass media. The study shows strategic relevance of the concept and its unifying potential both within the EU framework, and in wider European domain. The analysis reveals that primary and secondary collocators actualized with the notion convey both the topicality and inconsistency of the concept. Moreover, the results show that identity and personal / collective self-determination discourse is characterized by polemic nature and various evaluations that predominantly feature the tactics of doubt and mistrust to the unifying potential of European identity concept.

European mobility programmes have been seen as a promising method to promote European identity, particularly with a focus on young generations. In this article, I discussed the constructing role of the Erasmus exchange programme by employing the result of direct crosscultural interaction. Data from Eurobarometer surveys and outcomes concluded from the semistructured interviews revealed that socialising with other Europeans strengthened European identity but contact with the host country remained limited. Diff erent from other studies, this paper also reveals that the national identity of the participants precisely empower as a result of coaction. Furthermore, for the fi rst time in the literature, semi-structured interviews unveiled that cultural differences such as stereotypes and prejudices have no negative eff ect in promoting European identity among students. Rather, it generates a positive impact for the awareness of national identity.
