Opis:
A preserved register of items is an interesting and valuable source for research into everyday life of the 18th century nobility. The mentioned toys helped children to imitate everyday life activities as accurately as possible. Despite the fact that the items are a part of the magnate’s inventory, many of them showed signs of wear and tear while some were completely destroyed. The toys were often used but no particular attention was paid to regular repairs thereof. In the preserved source materials, we can easily find items for boys like military-related toys and play-horse heads on sticks. The typically girlish items included mostly dolls, dressed in costumes following the latest fashion. An interesting collection of toys consists of items that imitated various genre scenes, the nature of which may indicate the origin of the items. They created a miniature world, corresponding to the activities observed in everyday life. Unfortunately, the laconic nature of many entries in the register does not allow for more extended research based on the specific features of the items on the list. The problem of the representation of toys in the world of noble things requires an in-depth study of the preserved source materials, in order to recognize the specificity of this type of objects.

The article analyses descriptions, memories, and notes on Dresden found in eighteenth-century accounts of Polish travellers. The overarching research objective is to capture the specificity of the way of presenting the city. The ways that Dresden is described are determined by genological diversity of texts, different ways of narration, the use of rhetorical repertoire, and the time of their creation. There are two dominant ways of presenting the city: the first one foregrounds the architectural and historical values, the second one revolves around social life and various kinds of games (redoubts, performances).

Opis:
The paper explores the didactic potential of the novels by the eighteenth-century English writer Frances Burney. To this end, it takes up the metaphor of a life-like automaton – a symbol of human ingenuity and artistic mastery, and a popular object of entertainment in the eighteenth century – and examines its applicability to describe the act of construing a novelistic text. The analysis yields the conclusion that Burney’s experiments with narrative techniques (third-person narration, free indirect discourse, heteroglossia) were employed to ensure the narrator’s authority through the strategic withdrawal of the authorial feminine voice, and were also instrumental in achieving a text which would be both aesthetically pleasing and instructive to the readers. Burney’s didacticism, moreover, proves to be very modern, that is not prescriptively moralizing, but rather training the readers in the exercise of empathy.

Hungary - Kant Immanuel - 18th century - eighteenth century - censorship - history
Opis:
Through a wide range of sources, this study reveals the non-philosophical spread of the ideas of Immanuel Kant in the Slovak regions of Hungary. The flow of philosophical ideas can be demonstrated not only in the works of the Hungarian followers of Kant, but also in censorship sources documenting the import of Kantian texts in the 1790s. The critical debates in correspondences and published texts reveal anti-Kantian argumentations. Information about the advertisements of Kant's works and subscriptions to them also help form an idea about their popularity. Research on private albums reveals how the philosophical legacy circulated, despite bans and repressions, in non-public communication networks and how its social area extended beyond the sphere of philosophy and education.

Opis:
While 18th-century almanacs transmitted usable information that was meant to be relevant to daily life, at the beginning of the century they also began to function as an educational tool that enabled readers to act as producers of media content, and, as a result, to develop media literacy via the practice of writing and responding to amateur poetry. In this article, I define media literacy as a cultural category shaped by specific media-related skills: the creation, interpretation, evaluation, and negotiation of media content. I examine John Tipper’s The Ladies’ Diary (1704–1713), one of the best-selling almanacs of the era, as an educational tool that, through the strategy of inviting and publishing amateur poetry, promoted and taught media competencies. Tipper’s almanac, I argue, should thus be acknowledged as an influential document in the history of media education.

The main aim of this article is to present the manuscripts of Antoni Habel’s symphonies preserved in archives in the Wielkopolska region of Poland and attempt to order them chronologically in respect to their dates of composition. Habel lived in Gniezno around the turn of the nineteenth century. Most of our information about him comes from payroll registers, inventories and other documents preserved in the Archiépiscopal Archive of Gniezno, but they do not contain any information about his symphonies. The following works by Habel have survived to this day: a Sinfonia D, preserved in two copies (in Grodzisk and Gniezno), and a Sinfonia ex F, preserved in Gostyń. A critical analysis of these two compositions allows us to indicate which was composed first, since the simplicity of the composition techniques used in the F major Symphony suggests that it is older than the D major. We must also address, however, the question of the differences between the two copies of the D major Symphony, which vary with regard to melody, rhythm, dynamics, articulation and even form. Analysis makes it possible to reconstruct the order in which the two manuscripts were produced and determine the original version of the D major Symphony.

Once thought to be the fictitious creations of Jane Austen, the seven Gothic novels that comprise the ‘Northanger ‘Horrid’ Novels’ have been critically neglected since their rediscovery in the early twentieth century. This paper engages with ideas of absence and exclusion within the ‘horrid’ novel The Necromancer by Peter Teuthold, in order to consider the historical (mis)construction of women by male voices in eighteenth-century rape trials. Particular emphasis is placed on an embedded narrative within the text that subversely explores the ways in which the female voice is subsequently read and mis(constructed), so that the narrative is ‘structured’ and ‘arranged’ to construct a version of a woman at odds with femininity, one that ultimately deviates from ‘the natural order.’

Opis:
The system of propaganda employed by the competing political groups in early eight- eenth century England embraced the popular literary circles in order to gain their support, a process which was reflected in the prolific and politically inclined literary output of the period. One of the lesser known members of these circles was the writer and physi- cian Joseph Browne. Little information concerning Browne is available, something which perhaps can be attributed to the relatively scant attention paid to his person. One critic, Howard Weinbrot, in his study on Samuel Johnson, acknowledged Browne as the author of the poem “The Gothick Hero” (so far only accredited to Browne) and associated his political views with support for the Hanoverian dynasty that ascended the British throne in 1714. However, the works Browne actually authored, as well as those attributed to him, contradict such a statement. In fact, his literary output, journalism, literary and political circles as well as his posthumous opinion reflected in nineteenth century works and com- ments on his literary activity prove Browne’s anti-Harleyite, anti-Whig and therefore anti- Hanoverian views. This article attempts to draw a sketch of Joseph Browne, confirming the constancy of his political views, and contributes to the discussion on the authorship of a number of key texts hitherto only attributed to him.

Opis:
This article addresses some aspects of the functioning of the concept of ‘citizen’ in the political discourse of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the latter half of the eighteenth century. In the dominant nobility’s discourse, the concept gained a strictly defined meaning: a citizen was, namely, a person entitled to wield or exercise political power in the state. In the estate society realities, it actually boiled down to mutual identification of two concepts: ‘citizen’ and ‘nobleman’. The bourgeois conception of citizenship took shape in confrontation with such understanding of the idea, formulated and propagated by Protestant townsmen – mainly by Wawrzyniec Mitzler de Kolof and Michał Gröll, book traders, printers and publishers from Saxony. They derived the meaning of ‘citizen’ from ‘resident’. In such a concept, the term extended to all the inhabitants of Poland-Lithuania – apart from the nobility, it included, also the townspeople and the peasantry. In this context, of relevance are the changes in the meaning of the German term Bürger (burgher, citizen of the state), which influenced Polish political discourse. This leads to the conclusion that the latter half of the eighteenth century saw the idea of citizenship in its modern meaning.

Opis:
Between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries when Classicism had came to an end and Romanticism had just started, Jane Austen wrote her famous, fabulous and funny novels. All of them are known as sentimental novels. On the other hand, they are not only romances, but also detailed description of English society in the nineteenth century. According to Burgess, influenced the Age of Reason (Burgess 2003: 173). What is more, it is said that the nineteenth century novels replaced romances easily because they still had the general structure of the romances. Like in a romance, Austen connected the main plot with love affairs. In accordance with the statement of Burgess, her books mixed romantic and classical features (Burgess 2003: 174). This style of writing gave her the popularity of a unique writer who tried to present some a part of the English society, especially the issues connected with women`s life. Mostly she skipped political and historical events and focused on people and their everyday life and love affairs. Human dilemmas were the priority for her. Another important issue was a depiction of the character`s lives in novels. Austen mostly used comical and funny dialogs, tricky plots, and happy endings.

On the Old Believers in Ukraine in the eighteenth century (Summary)The article offers the analysis of the structure and size of the households of the Old Believers living in the vicinity of Żytomierz in Ukraine in the eighteenth century. The Old Believers form a denomination that carved itself off from the Russian Orthodox Church in the latter half of the seventeenth century. The population census of 1795 serves as the basis of the analysis carried out in the paper. The households of the Old Believers were usually made up of 7.3 persons, with 6.5 persons forming the host’s own family. The majority of the families of the Old Believers were nuclear in their structure. Worthy of note is also a patriarchal character of the presence of adult relatives in these households. Among the host’s adult relatives who stayed in his household were, in the main, either his married brothers or his married sons. The vast majority of the farms owned by the Old Believers were thus inherited by male successors.

The review is a discussion – presentation of Małgorzata Mieszek’s monograph devoted to the dramaturgy of Jan Bielski, an important Jesuit playwright of the eighteenth century. He was regarded by his contemporaries (Jan Daniel Janocki, Józef Andrzej Załuski) as a leading representative of reformed dramaturgy, also as a promoter of classical Latin, and, simultaneously, as an advocate of the Polish language in school theatre. The book of Mieszek also traces the status of Jesuit theatre in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the eighteenth century.

During the times of the Reformation in England the teaching of canon law was officially prohibited. The needs of ecclesiastical justice, however, forced the lecturers of the Roman law – the only law taught at Oxford and Cambridge universities at the time – to insert canonical matters into their lectures. It is hard to evaluate how large that amalgamation was. Nonetheless, it is certain that the canon law survived the Reformation and flourished in changed circumstances. Besides the lectures, the knowledge of the canon law could be acquired by everyone who was linked with the universities thanks to the library resources that survived the Reformation. One of the most amazing collection of Catholic canon law manuscripts was stored in the library of New College, Oxford. The article presents the content of a catalogue of these manuscripts drawn up in 1729. Its expanded version was published in 1852. The comparative analysis of both catalogues allows us to determine the origins of these manuscripts. Moreover, it sheds light on the condition of canon law studies in the early eighteenth-century England.

W trakcie kwerendy przeprowadzonej w pierwszym kwartale 2022 roku w Archiwum OO. Odnotowano w nich instrumentarium i muzykalia, jakie mieli do dyspozycji muzycy karmelitańscy w II połowie XVIII wieku.
Library research conducted in the first quarter of 2022 at the Library of the Carmelite Monastery at Piasek in Kraków (within the framework of a project titled ‘Carmelite Musical Culture in the Old Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 17th–18th Centuries – A Research Reconnaissance’) attracted attention to two previously unresearched historical sources (inventories) which comprise information about the activity of music ensembles at Carmelite churches in Rozdół (now Rozdil) and Horodyszcze (now Horodyshche, both in Ukraine) in the eighteenth century. Previously unknown to scholars, these inventories mention the instruments and music-related sources available to Carmelite musicians in the second half of the eighteenth century. Unfortunately, for the music sources from Rozdół we are only given a list of genres (Masses, litanies, Vespers, symphonies, ‘plancti’, etc.), while from Horodyszcze we have a general remark that ‘music documents of various kinds can be found in a bookcase where the ensemble performs’. We can also learn from these inventories that the ensembles in both places included violins, oboes, trumpets, horns, and keyboard instruments (church organ or positive organ), which made it possible to perform the current repertoire in different genres. The inventories thus contain valuable information about musical life in minor Carmelite centres in the eastern parts of the Old Commonwealth and change our knowledge about Carmelite musical life in that period.

Opis:
The Pauline father Amandus Ivanschiz (1727-1758) was a composer whose music heralded the style of the early Classical period. He worked mainly in Austria (Wiener Neustadt and Mariatrost), as well as in Rome (it has recently been established that he spent three years there). His sacred music, especially masses, litanies and cantata-style pieces to non-liturgical texts, has been preserved in numerous manuscripts (over 260 items) held in eight countries of Central Europe (Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland and Hungary). Comparative analysis of all the manuscripts allows one to distinguish several problems commonly encountered in research into eighteenth-century musical sources, such as variants, multiple versions of works and contradictory attributions of authorship, further exacerbated by the lack of originals. This article focusses on the most recent findings relating to Ivanschiz’s life and religious music, as well as discussing and illustrating discrepancies between various copies of the same compositions by reference to selected works. We will also consider the differentiation of authorial variants from variant versions arising from custom.

Apologia filosofico-storica in cui si mostra il sesso delle donne superiore a quello degli uomini, published in 1737 by the Palermitan nobleman Vincenzo Di Blasi, is a collection of examples – taken from myth, history and literature – of feminine values and virtues, composed in support of the superiority of the “womanish sex” over the virile one. The work is closely linked to the Sicilian cultural context of that time, suspended between a fossilized scholastic philosophy and a slow reception of the secular and modern Cartesian thought. But it confirms – also in Sicily – the growing cultural and disseminating function acquired by the so called “art of conversation”, alongside the already institutionalized model proposed by the academies.
Apologia filosofico-storica in cui si mostra il sesso delle donne superiore a quello degli uomini, wydana w 1737 roku przez palermitańskiego szlachcica Vincenzo Di Blasi, jest zbiorem przykładów kobiecych wartości i cnót zaczerpniętych z mitów, historii i literatury. Zostały one skomponowane, by uwydatnić przewagę „płci niewieściej” nad męską.

The political discourse in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth changed deeply in the second half of the eighteenth century. New concepts, terms and notions were integrated into it, some of them drawn from the vocabularies of Western philosophers. The article tries to answer the question what these concepts or notions were, and how their adaptation informed the language itself and the descriptions of the political world and political-system projects formulated in it. Based on the analysis of theoretical treatises as well as writings produced as part of current political debate of the years 1764–92, the author seeks to demonstrate the ways in which the political disputants of King Stanislaus Augustus’s time endeavoured to face the state’s crisis through introducing new words and ideas, and in which the language was adapting to the challenges of the changing socio-political situation. She argues that the concepts which appeared in the last quarter of the century in the Polish political language were fundamental to the description and view of the world – to the extent that a breakthrough in Polish discussion on society and state is identifiable along these lines.

The article analyses the manuscript of collected sermons entitled Syllabus Marianus and written by the baroque preacher Antoni Węgrzynowicz. The manuscript provides an insight into Węgrzynowicz’s work as a preacher and serves as a source of biographical information. Based on the changes that the preacher made to the epigrams (which are a typical element of the sermons), the article argues that Węgrzynowicz himself was their author (so far, these works have been regarded as fragments of Marian hymns). The manuscript also includes two pages that are unrelated to the collection. One of them features an outline of the sermon that Węgrzynowicz preached to his confreres on the feast of Christmas in 1715. These notes also reveal some tricks of the preacher’s art. The information that the second sheet contains gives insight into the everyday life in an 18th-century monastery.

Opis:
Could vanities be the overlooked essence of so-called ‘libertine ’ fiction? 18th century French erotic literature has observed and analysed the new human condition on the brink of modernity. There is no more God to fill up the void, no more eternity to hope for beyond human finitude; only humanity, the present moment and the truth of a sensation. The adventures of this fiction ’s characters stage the wis-dom of the homo bulla that would be, tacitly, a coping mechanism to that new re-ality. Nothing is vanity for these frivolous beings, as long as the vanity of pleasures manages to keep away the memory of the vanity of life. However, the irony of those narrations suggests, like in the classical model of vanitas, that these temporal delectations may not be enough to avoid angst. The reader is asked a question as he or she discovers in the libertine figure an anamorphosis of all humanity: knowing that you are mortal, what will you choose between anguishes and vanities?

The article is a fragment of a larger study, entitled Polish Project. Enlightenment in the First Republic of Poland (in preparation). Benedict Chmielowski’s New Athens is an extremely important text for the development of Polish culture in the eighteenth century, revealing the essence of the functioning of the “enlightened unenlightenment”. This term, which is more and more often used, is employed to denote the phenomena previously described as “enlightened Sarmatism”. New historical research makes it necessary to change the previous understanding of Sarmatism in a quite significant way, limiting the use of this concept when describing cultural phenomena of the eighteenth century. New Athens is a good example of the application of the method of cultural “enlightened unenlightenment”, and the article tries to bring closer the basic determinants of this method. This is important, especially since shortly after the publication of Chmielowski’s work, in 1769, Stanisław Konarski created the final theoretical form of the Polish Enlightenment, different from the unenlightenment, but also from European practices.

Existing studies on the historical knowledge of the nobility within the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth primarily rely on printed sources. However, these studies often overlook the history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, focusing on the Kingdom of Poland instead. This article aims to present Lithuania’s history as depicted in the silvae rerum of eighteenth-century noblemen. Through scientific investigations, it is evident that descriptions of Lithuanian history were less frequent compared to Polish history. The period covered in these descriptions typically ranges from the origin narrative (ethnogenetic legend) to the reign of Władysław Jagiełło. Notably, the history of the Jagiellonian dynasty is incorporated into the history of Poland. By comparing the noblemen’s silvae rerum with historiographical works, both from the 18th century and earlier periods, the article examines the sources of the nobility’s historical knowledge. The analysis reveals the continued influence of works by Maciej Stryjkowski and Wojciech Wijuk Kojałowicz, while also acknowledging the impact of eighteenth-century writers such as Kasper Niesiecki, Władysław Łubieński, and Franciszek Paprocki on the historical content of the silvae rerum.

The congregation of the Benedictine nuns of Sandomierz, active between 1615 and 1903, belonged to wealthy magnatial foundations, which allowed the convent to foster cultural activities. Special emphasis was placed on musical performance of various types - the musical adornment of the liturgy. The ‘Glory of God’, as Benedictine nuns referred to it, constituted the essence of their congregational life. On weekdays, the celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours, Masses and - occasionally - other services in choir took six hours, and on numerous feast days of the liturgical year, when the Liturgy of the Hours was sung, not read, it required even more time. The higher the rank of the feast day, the greater was the effort to stress its importance by providing it with a proper musical setting, which led to the cultivation of musical practices of various kinds on special occasions. The musical repertory of the Sandomierz Benedictine nuns comprised plainchant without instrumental accompaniment, plainchant with organ accompaniment, polyphonic a cappella singing (referred to as ‘figure’), vocal instrumental music (‘fractus’) and instrumental music. A picture of religious musical practice emerges primarily from extant musical sources, and also from a ‘choir agenda’ from 1749, a convent chronicle of the years 1762-1780, ‘treasury records’ from 1739-1806 and convent registers. Eighteenth-century sources document the musical activity of twenty-four nuns of the Sandomierz convent, some of them considered to be ‘professional’ musicians and referred to as ‘singers and players’. The most interesting, but also most problematic, areas are vocal instrumental practice and the likely consitution of the nuns’ music chapel. We find information about nuns playing keyboard instruments, violin, viola da gamba, tromba marina and horn.

Znamienną cechą twórczości Petera Ackroyda jest wyraźne zespolenie powieściopisarstwa z popularną historiografią, czego przejawem jest niezmienne zainteresowanie autora formą powieści historycznej. Teksty, którym poświęcony jest niniejszy artykuł – Hawksmoor (1985), Chatterton (1987), The Lambs of London (2004) – podejmują próbę kreatywnej rekonstrukcji niektórych istotnych wydarzeń XVIII wieku.
Peter Ackroyd’s literary output is characterised by a clear interrelationship between fiction and popular historiography. This is best manifested in his unwavering interest in the form of the historical novel. The present article is devoted to the three novels which creatively reconstruct selected events of the eighteenth century: Hawksmoor (1985), Chatterton (1987) and The Lambs of London (2004). It is argued that the recurrent themes, characters and ideas result from Ackroyd’s understanding of the century as “the Age of Disguise”. The metaphor of disguise accurately renders the specificity of the time when the Delphic precept “know then thyself” was taking on a new dimension. Informed by New Historicism and the theory of the postmodern historical novel, the following article demonstrates that Ackroyd’s vision of the eighteenth century corresponds with this approach to the period.

Opis:
Dostarczył on kapeli wiele pięknych i rzadkich utworów. Do szczególnie interesujących źródeł należy kontrafaktura arii „Benché nasconda la serpe in seno” Antonia Vivaldiego (1678–1741) z opery Orlando furioso. Z drugiej strony do Włoch podróżowali dyplomaci i kolekcjonerzy, np. Balthasar Knapp czy Jan Rudolf von Sporck. Popularność włoskiej muzyki religijnej w monarchii habsburskiej wyprzedza ekspansję włoskiej opery mniej więcej o dekadę. Ogromny, dotychczas nie zawsze doceniany wkład w dystrybucję muzyki włoskiej miały klasztory i większe ośrodki kościelne. Utwory kompozytorów włoskich m. in. odnotowuje inwentarz z 1723 r. z klasztoru cystersów w Oseku, jednego z największych odbiorców muzyki włoskiej w Środkowej Europie.
One of the consequences of introducing polyphony, vocal-instrumental music and instrumental music into monastic liturgy was the establishment of a new office. In Cistercian monasteries in Silesia, a regens chori figuralis was appointed from the second half of the seventeenth century onwards. In the archives bequeathed by Silesian Cistercians to posterity, there is not a single description of this office, so we do not know what duties it involved. It is clear, however, that the regens supplied the repertoire to the ensemble (by purchasing or copying scores, or having them copied), taught the ensemble new compositions, led rehearsals to polish the performance of new music and conducted performances during liturgy and on other occasions (including large-scale works, such as oratorios and dramatic music). Traces of his day-to-day work have survived in music manuscripts. A distinguished name in the necrology of the Lubiąż monastery is that of a long-standing regens of the choir, friar Caspar Raff (1683–1738), an excellent musician and a monk of exceptional taste. He supplied the ensemble with many beautiful and rare compositions. He also composed liturgical works, as is confirmed by two recently identified sources. The twenty-two newly identified music manuscripts written completely or partially by Caspar Raff are the oldest known vocal-instrumental compositions in Lubiąż. This repertoire was copied during the period from around 1714 until 1738 and used in the monastery until its dissolution. The music preserved in the manuscripts was written by Raff’s contemporaries, such as Gunther Jacob (1685–1734), Francesco Mancini (1672–1737), Domenico Natale Sarri (1679–1744), Francesco Feo (1691–1761), Nicola Fago (1677–1745), Antonio Vivaldi (1678–1741) and Pietro Paolo Bencini (1670–1755), while several compositions are anonymous. One particularly interesting source is a contrafactum of the aria ‘Benché nasconda la serpe in seno’ by Antonio Vivaldi (1678–1741) from the opera Orlando furioso. Previously, the provenance and date of this manuscript were unknown. The presence of a repertoire so interesting and of such high artistic merit prompts questions about its provenance. The music performed in the Cistercian monastery in Lubiąż did not diverge from the mainstream repertoire used in major centres of musical life, where the 1720s were a period of growing interest in the music of Italian composers. The transmission of this repertoire was undoubtedly facilitated by political change and the fact that in the years from 1714 to 1735 Naples found itself under Habsburg influence. Also crucial were journeys undertaken by Italian musicians to other parts of the monarchy, including Prague and Wrocław, to find employment; examples of their activity include the operatic theatres established in those two cities. On the other hand, Italy remained a destination for diplomats and collectors, such as Balthasar Knapp and Jan Rudolf von Sporck. The popularity of Italian sacred music throughout the Habsburg monarchy preceded the expansion of Italian opera by a decade or so. Monasteries and larger ecclesiastical centres made a vast and sometimes underestimated contribution to the transmission of Italian music. For example, works by Italian composers are listed in a 1723 inventory from the Cistercian monastery in Osek, which was one of the greatest recipients of Italian music in Central Europe. The monastery had an excellent music ensemble. The manuscripts discussed in this article reveal that in Lubiąż Caspar Raff had at his disposal an ensemble with a comparable set of instruments and that in order to satisfy its needs he would quickly import to Lubiąż newly composed, outstanding works by Italian masters of sacred music.

Among the first serious adherents of the idea of comparing different legal systems was Thomas Bever. Bever was a civilian lawyer who successfully combined practice in the ecclesiastical and admiralty courts of England with Oxford’s fellowship and teaching duties. In the 1760s and 1770s, Bever was teaching the Civil law course on behalf of (or independently of) the current holders of the Regius Professorship. His lectures, unique in many aspects, were crowned with a set of comparative lectures. Bever was presenting the constitutional and legal systems of several European countries, including Poland, both in historical and modern dimensions. The aim of this article is to discuss Bever’s attitude towards comparative legal studies as well as to present his comparative method by reference to part of his lectures devoted to the old Polish law and constitution.
W latach 60. i 70. osiemnastego stulecia Bever prowadził w zastępstwie (bądź równolegle do) królewskiego profesora wykład prawa rzymskiego.

The article is a study of politeness formulae retained in the eighteenth-century epistolography expressing certain feelings and attitudes of the sender towards the addressee, namely: good will (z prawdziwym afektem), faithfulness (z należytą obserwancją), gratefulness (z nieskończoną rekognicją), duty (z niewzruszoną obligacją), obedience (z najgłębszą submisją). One can treat them as one common category of etiquette because of their approximate semantic value, common pragmatic aim, very similar formal structure and the same final location in the epistolary text. The analysis was based on 305 original, handwritten and unpublished eighteenth-century letters written by several dozens of noblemen. The presented formulae appeared mainly in contacts between the representatives of the aristocracy and the nobility.

This contribution focuses on the only two tales given by Edmond de Goncourt, king of the seventh day, to the collective enterprise of Catulle Mendès. Goncourt took two texts from old works, which he undertook to republish in order to give them to Le Nouveau Décaméron. These illustrate the dual literary style of the Goncourts, that as fanciful storytellers and also as historians of the eighteenth century, especially of women. Love occupies a prominent place: the dark love of the engraver who goes mad in “Un aqua-fortiste”, and the voluptuousness of the courtesan actresses in the Age of Enlightenment in “La Courtisane au théâtre.” Edmond de Goncourt asserts his singularity in this luxurious publication that brings together the writers who frequented his ‘Grenier’ in Auteuil.

Opis:
It may seem that we know a lot about the elections and coronations of Roman kings and emperors in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and this also applies to the one of 1745, when Francis I Stephen became emperor. However, very little attention has been paid to the electoral delegations, their tasks, and their role in the pre-election negotiations. This article will therefore analyse the instructions issued by Queen Maria Theresa of Bohemia, who did not personally come to Frankfurt am Main for the election, to her diplomats. The analysis will then be supplemented by additional sources from the National Archives in Prague, where the reports of the delegation and other sources have been preserved. The election of 1745 is thoroughly compared with the elections of 1657–58 (Leopold I), 1711 (Charles VI), and 1742 (Charles VII). The author shows who made up the Bohemian delegation and how some of these diplomats’ tasks changed over time. Although the delegation of three noblemen – Counts Wurmbrand and Khevehüller, and Baron Hilleprand – had mainly ceremonial tasks, its role was also crucial in the actual negotiations, both on the very day of the election, then when it represented the Queen in the cathedral, and finally in conclave vote and when it was given other tasks (such as organising the celebratory banquet, illuminating the houses, etc.). It is evident that the delegation helped Queen Maria Theresa and her family regain possession of the imperial title.

Artykuł zawiera opis ceremonii pogrzebowych królowej Marii Leszczyńskiej, żony Ludwika XV, zmarłej 24 VI 1768 r. i pochowanej w bazylice św. Dionizego w Saint-Denis w dniu 11 VIII 1768 roku.
This article describes the funeral ceremony of Queen Maria Leszczyńska, wife to Louis XV of France, who died on 24 June 1768 and was buried in the Basilica of Saint Denis on 11 August 1768. The author’s account is based on a ceremonial held in the archives of Seine-Saint-Denis department in Bobigny (220J/16/3). The musical setting of the ceremony consisted mainly in liturgical chants, but the document mentions 120 musicians participating in the funeral. They performed the motet De profundis (1740) by Antoine Blanchard (1696–1770), who conducted the performance. No information is given about any instrumental accompaniment. What is more, there is mention of the symbolic silence of some instruments, e.g. the organ. As the coffin was being carried into the basilica, military instruments were played (trumpets, drums, timpani), as well as other instruments not specified in the document.

Opis:
The establishment of the Anglican Church by Henry VIII and its Protestantisation achieved by his children Edward VI and Elizabeth I did not cause the absolute rejection of Catholic customs and traditions in England. Unlike other Protestant communities, the Anglican Church maintained a developed legal order, which was a continuation of a heritage of medieval canon law. The final victory of Anglicanism over Catholic sentiments was achieved in the eighteenth century. The article asks whether that same mechanism worked in the sphere of the teaching of canon law in England in the eighteenth century. It is worth remembering that canon law could not be taught openly, and for this reason, it was often disguised in the form of history lectures and the reception of Roman law. The article contains the conclusions drawn from the analysis of popular eighteenth-century textbooks of Roman law and Anglican ecclesiastical law. References to Roman canon law were sought in them, and modes of expressing statements regarding the Catholic Church and its law were evaluated.

Opis:
The Poems of Ossian (1760, 1765) by James Macpherson are considered the most famous literary hoax in history. On the wave of pseudo-historical productions of the first half and – especially – the middle of the eighteenth century the counterfeit songs of a fictional third-century Scottish bard gained popularity that spanned the ocean, exerting a lasting influence on literature and culture (to mention the endurance of such names as Malvina or Oscar). The battle over their authenticity, waged for fifty years, testifies to the eagerness with which the contemporary people embraced the fictional version of history, choosing to preserve the idealized and heroic version of the past. Considering the destruction of the old Highland culture that Scotland was facing at that time, the attitude of the Scots can be understood. However, the rising sensibility movement also expressed its support for Macpherson’s creation, regardless of nationality. In the words of Thomas Gray (1716–71): „I am resolved to believe them genuine, spite of the Devil and the Kirk” (Poems and Letters, 1820, 276). It must be noted that the eighteenth century was the time in which the division between factual history and fictional history was in its nascence. Imagination, traditionally distrusted, was sometimes considered a part of memory. Some thinkers – like seventeenth-century Hobbes – believed the two are essentially the same. Others – like David Hume – saw the difference in the vividness of the images they create. From the attempts to define the mental faculties responsible for perception there arises the image of the „universe of imagination” (Hume): built of ever-changing impressions, hazy and blurry. The Poems of Ossian, a complex and little-studied work, responds to all the questions of the period outlined above. It is a perfect example of imaginative alternate history arrested between the Enlightened reverence for history and Romantic awe for imagination. The main hero, Ossian, a blind bard, the last of his race, tries to retrieve from his crumbling memory the „tales of the times of old”, creating the world of mist and shadow: a liminal, limbo-like space, between the actual memory of the past and imagination filling in for the missing facts.
Pieśni Osjana, złożone i mało zbadane dzieło, dotyka wszystkich powyżej nakreślonych kwestii. Jest to doskonały przykład fantastycznej historii alternatywnej, zawieszonej pomiędzy oświeceniową rewerencją dla historii i romantycznym zachwytem nad wyobraźnią. Główny bohater, Osjan, niewidomy bard, ostatni ze swojej rasy, próbuje przywołać ze swej słabnącej pamięci „opowieści o dawnych czasach”, tworząc świat mgły i cienia: liminalną przestrzeń limbo, pomiędzy faktyczną pamięcią o przeszłości i wyobraźnią, wypełniającą w niej luki.

In the research on the deteriorating relations between the Evangelical-Reformed (Calvinist) minority and the Catholic majority of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the problems of mutual perception of the representatives of these denominations, as well as the evaluation of the realities of life in an increasingly Catholic state by the representatives of the Evangelical minority have been investigated the least. Based on two diaries by Evangelical-Reformed clergymen, Gabriel Dyjakiewicz and Jan Krzysztof Kraiński, who were active in Podlasie and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania at the turn of the eighteenth century, the author attempts to present the image of the world as perceived and presented on the pages of these two egodocuments. After analysing the diary entries, it cannot be concluded that their authors found themselves in a social and communicative vacuum, although both of them noticed the progressive isolation of Evangelical circles. According to the records, it also appears that interfaith relations in the everyday life were not as bad as contemporary historical studies suggest. Both authors had a positive attitude towards the state, felt to be its citizens and patriots, combining a strong Evangelical religious identity with a sense of community with the society of the predominantly Catholic Polish Nobles’ Republic. Neither of the diaries reflects on the civilisational and cultural differences between the society of the north-eastern lands of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the world of Protestant Europe, known to both authors from their university studies.

Diplomatic negotiations aimed at ending the Great Northern War, conducted by Saxony, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Sweden, which in the years 1721–1732 were formally still in conflict despite the Treaty of Nystad concluded by Sweden and Russia in 1721, have not yet been analysed from the perspective of Saxon and Polish diplomacy. The aim of this article is to examine this process, mainly in the light of primary sources of Saxon origin. Contrary to the popular belief that the many years of neglect to solve this issue were due solely to the weakness of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the author proves that there were many other factors involved. Some of the most important ones involved different political interests of the Commonwealth, Saxony and Sweden, and the changing international circumstances, including alliances, in the years 1721–1732. The article also presents how the original form of the peace agreement was developed. Instead of the signing of a peace treaty, it resulted in an exchange of royal letters between Sweden and, respectively, Saxony in 1729 and the Commonwealth in 1732. They included a declaration to ‘restore the old friendship’. Such a form of peace agreement, whose aim was to bypass Russian mediation, became the source of a common misconception that the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was not a party in the Great Northern War.

Opis:
The article aims to present the activity of the Voivode of Chełmno, Jakub Zygmunt Rybiński (d. 1725) during the Tarnogród Confederation (1715–1717). In the period when the movement of the nobility rebelled against the rule of the Saxon dynasty in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Rybiński commanded some of the troops that remained loyal to the king, and was involved in hit-and-run tactics against the Confederation’s forces. He did not show any remarkable military talents, as he suffered a defeat in the Battle of Wąchock on 30 November 1715. However, if the situation required it, he was able to oppose the Confederation using various political means, e.g. in the matter of suspending the judiciary. When analysing the collected primary sources, it can be concluded that among noblemen he enjoyed the reputation of a loyal servant to the king. At times this reputation proved to be a burden, when, for example, he received threats from radically anti-royal noblemen. However, in the most difficult period of the struggle between the nobility and the royal court, Jakub Zygmunt Rybiński did not abandon Augustus II, which did not mean that he fully and uncritically supported his political programme. He considered the king’s idea of radically strengthening the monarch’s power with the help of Saxon troops to be a mistake. He rightly predicted that it would cause indignation among noblemen. This was particularly evident in the period immediately preceding the outbreak of discontent in 1714 and early 1715. His attitude towards the Tarnogród Confederation evolved. Initially, he was a supporter of the armed suppression of the rebellion, but later he was increasingly inclined to resolve the conflict through negotiations.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to present the view of Polish rulers by the nobility of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the eighteenth century. These reflections were based on the silva rerum books written in the eighteenth century, containing separate sections on the history of the Polish Kingdom. As in the printed works, there is a noticeable slow change in the manner of descriptiveness – the abandonment of factual information in favour of an attempt to evaluate the ruler and the times of his reign. The painful reality of the successive partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and then its collapse, resulted in a more critical approach to certain rulers, but also to the mechanisms of governance.

Opis:
The reforms in the second half of the eighteenth century affected the cities and towns of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in various ways. After the reform of 1776, the majority of small towns in the Grand Duchy were deprived of the Magdeburg Law, while they retained the right to acquire landed estates. Apart from private towns, only 11 towns managed by territorial administrators – starosts – and belonging to the royal estates retained their privileged status. During the sessions of the Great Sejm (1788–1792), the discussions on the situation of Lithuanian towns were resumed. Representatives of towns that retained the Magdeburg Law, those which had lost it, and those striving for new rights and liberties were invited by the municipal authorities of the Old Town of Warsaw in order to submit their demands in the Sejm together with all the towns. The new town laws of 1791 laid the foundations for modern urban administration and prepared the grounds for burghers to fight for their rights and liberties, which was influenced by the municipal self-government institutions established under these laws. The question of the number of small Lithuanian towns which took advantage of this opportunity during one year (1791/1792) has already been considered in Lithuanian and Polish historiography. Until now, however, historians have usually limited themselves to indicating the number of issued self-government privileges (74), but this figure does not provide a full picture of the political activity of the Lithuanian bourgeoisie. The article identifies 130 small Lithuanian towns (excluding 11 towns which retained the Magdeburg Law) which actively participated in the political movement of the bourgeoisie in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and analyses the composition of this group of urban settlements.

The article deals with the manner in which the sejmik of Ukmergė District, located in Vilnius Voivodeship functioned over the period of 1781–1784. The article discusses the preparations for, the course of the proceedings and the outcomes of each assembly in which the nobility of Ukmergė participated. As regards the analysed period, we have access to the information on the proceedings of nine sejmiks in Ukmergė: four deputational, two envoy, two administrative and one electoral assembly. The research was based on manuscript sources, namely correspondence, lists of candidates for deputies and resolutions of the sejmiks. The sejmiks in Ukmergė were not among the most numerous. The resolutions in the period under examination were signed by 21 to 45 participants. The driving force behind political life in the district were the Morykoni and Kościałkowski families, which had connections with the royal court. They played major roles as early as in the time when the Court Treasurer Antoni Tyzenhaus was a dominant figure. The local elites, headed by Benedict Morykoni, enjoyed considerable independence in personal matters, such as selection of people promoted for parliamentary and deputy functions. Despite their many ties with Vilnius Voivode Karol S. Radziwiłł, the sejmik leaders sometimes acted against his expectations. A relatively high degree of independence of politicians from Ukmergė was probably due to their personal ties with the leaders of Lithuanian advocates of strong royal rule (regalists), namely with Deputy Chancellor Joachim Chreptowicz, and earlier with Tyzenhaus.

The issue of the gathering of the Lithuanian nobility in Vilnius, organised in August 1715 by Great Hetman of Lithuania Ludwik Konstanty Pociej as a way of sparking a protest against the contributions imposed by King Augustus II for the maintenance of the Saxon army in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, has so far been marginally addressed in historiography. The purpose of the article is to examine the causes and consequences of the gathering and to determine the Russian attitude towards it. Using manuscript sources from Russia, Belarus, Poland and Lithuania, the author argues that the Russians had minimal influence over the organization of the gathering, yet they used it as a means to combat King Augustus II’s attempts to free himself from Russian influence. There is ample evidence to put forward a hypothesis that the request to Tsar Peter I for acting as an intermediary in the conflict between the king and the nobility was conceived by Pociej and other leading officials of the Commonwealth rather than by Russian diplomats. The article also argues that the convention in Vilnius contributed significantly to the formation of the Tarnogród Confederation in the Crown. The Poles believed that the Lithuanians were determined to uphold the declaration of the Vilnius convention to instigate military action against the king’s policies and contributions for the purposes of the Saxon army. When the news of the Vilnius gathering spread throughout Poland, riots began in the southern provinces, and part of the Polish army declared a confederation and took up arms.

Opis:
On 17 July 1724, the local Jesuit college was broken into and vandalised by a mob of Toruń Protestants. These events, the so-called tumult of Thorn, prompted a strong reaction from the Polish authorities. Under the court’s ruling, Mayor Johann Gottfried Rösner and nine other people who were found guilty were beheaded. This case resonated strongly in Europe. The prevailing opinion in the historiography is that the conduct of the municipal authorities following the tumult was slow and indecisive. In the light of the recently discovered sources (fragments of the drafts of city council minutes, originally destroyed during the siege of the city in 1813), it can be concluded that in the first days following the tumult the council did undertake an investigation, in which the blame for provoking the riots was quite explicitly placed on Jesuit students, and information about the incidents was sent to the council’s resident at the royal court in Warsaw. However, the decision to take any further steps was indeed procrastinated. The Jesuits were much quicker to disseminate the information about the harm done to their order in Toruń across the whole country.

This paper aims to identify the thematic categories associated with the word and the figure of the citizen in several texts published in France in the 18th century before the Revolution of 1789. The author examines the main themes linked to the appearance of the word citoyen and classifies them in the hyperonymic categories, collected at the end of the paper in the “grappe de themes” and shows that under the pen of some great authors of the time the word and the figure of the citizen are associated with the great themes of the Enlightenment like happiness, morality, protection of human life and virtue.

Eliasz od Góry Karmel, karmelitański kompozytor z I poł. XVIII w. był dotąd słabo znany. Kwerenda źródłowa pozwoliła zweryfikować daty jego życia i uściślić bieg jego kariery zakonnej. Właściwie Jan Mataski, urodził się 4 XI 1690 r., śluby zakonne złożył 20 VII 1713 roku. Do końca życia przebywał w konwencie Bożego Ciała w Poznaniu. Walentego. Oprócz nich aktywni byli, lub swoją działalność muzyczną zaczynali inni karmelici: Pafnucy od św. Placyda, Udalryk od św. Prokopa, Tyburcjusz od św. Franciszka, Teofil od św. Doroty, Kwintyn od św. Antoniego, Kazimierz od św. Jana Chrzciciela, Krzysztof od Trójcy Świętej, Nepomucen od Nawrócenia św. Pawła oraz Józef od św. Antoniego.
Elias of Mount Carmel was a Carmelite friar-composer of the first half of the eighteenth century. Source research has made it possible to verify the life dates of this previously little-known artist and reconstruct the course of his monastic career. Born as Jan Mataski on 4th November 1690, he took his monastic vows on 20th July 1713, and spent the rest of his life at the Corpus Christi Monastery in Poznań. Apart from his musical activity, he also taught philosophy and theology, educated and looked after young novices, and periodically held administrative functions (as the convent’s procurator). He died on 23rd October 1752 in Poznań. Other monastic musicians were working in Poznań in his lifetime, to mention only Sebastianus of St John the Baptist and Fabianus of St Valentine. There were also other Carmelites who were either pursuing or just beginning their work as musicians: Paphnutius of St Placidus, Udalricus of St Procopius, Tiburtius of St Francis, Theophilus of St Dorothy, Quintinus of St Anthony, Casimirus of St John the Baptist, Christophorus of the Trinity, Nepomucenus of St Paul’s Conversion, and Josephus of St Anthony.

The purpose of this article is to present the protocol from the inspection visit at the Church of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist in 1706 during a general visitation of the Diocese of Chełmno commissioned by Bishop Teodor Andrzej Potocki. So far, this source has been scarcely used in research on Toruń Cathedral, and the information it contains can be used to study the most diverse areas of sciences of history, especially art, bibliology and material culture of the Counter-Reformation era. It constitutes a supplement to earlier protocols that had been published in print, and made during inspection visits ordered by Bishops Andrzej Leszczyński (1647) and Andrzej Olszowski (1667–1672). The document provides a detailed enumeration of the liturgical vessels and vasa non sacra, including silver figurines that contain fragments of relics, which were more numerous than previously thought. The inspector also listed different paraments (e.g. vestments and dalmatics) and the contents of the parish library, which, in addition to papal decrees, canonical literature and popular sermon collections, included works by secular thinkers, including Aristotle, Boethius and Cicero.

Opis:
The article looks into the participation of the bishop ordinary of the diocese of Vilnius, Kazimierz Konstanty Brzostowski, and his suffragan, Maciej Józef Ancuta, in Lithuanian politics of the period between 1709 and 1717. The study has been based on the letters written by the bishops to the Lithuanian chancellor. It examines the bishops’ attitude towards Russian contributions, the taxation of Church estates, the arbitrary contributions raised by the Lithuanian army, the introduction of Saxon troops in 1713, the reaction to the king’s policies, and the attitude towards the nationwide uprising against the Saxon troops known as the confederations of Tarnogród and Vilnius. Finally, the bishops’ opinion on Russian mediation and the notorious Silent Sejm, where it was agreed that the liberum veto would be invalid. The bishops of the diocese of Vilnius were rather indifferent to the internal problems of Lithuania. They defended the immunity of the Church estates and disapproved of the introduction of Saxon troops. However, when the confederations were formed, they tried to manoeuvre between the noble and royal camps, not wanting to ruin their reputation on either side. The bishops often spoke on behalf of the diocesan clergy. Therefore, their adopted posture was often the expression of the opinion of the whole diocese’s clergy.
