For simply connected planar domains with the maximal conformal radius 1 it was proven in 1954 by G. Pólya and M. Schiffer that for the eigenvalues \(\lambda\) of the fixed membrane for any \(n\) the following inequality holds \[\sum_{k=1}^n\frac{1}{\lambda_k}\geq \sum_{k=1}^n\frac{1}{\lambda_k^{(\sigma)}},\] where \(\lambda_k^{(\sigma)}\) are the eigenvalues of the unit disk. The aim of the paper is to give a sharper version of this inequality and for the sum of all reciprocals to derive formulas which allow in some cases to calculate exactly this sum.

In this paper the Power Method for the generalized eigenvalue problem for matrix pencil (A-B)x=0 is considered. At any step of this iterative process the system of linear algebraic equations By-Ax has to be approximately solved with respect to y. We try to answer the question: how accurately we have to solve this system on each step of iteration,in order to guarantee resolution of the eigenproblem with given precision.

This paper contains a number of results in the theory of star partitions of graphs. We illustrate a variety of situations which can arise when the Reconstruction Theorem for graphs is used, considering in particular galaxy graphs - these are graphs in which every star set is independent. We discuss a recursive ordering of graphs based on the Reconstruction Theorem, and point out the significance of galaxy graphs in this connection.

Hydrological models are very useful for predictions in many ungauged basins across the world. There are many hydrological models available for discharge data gen-eration with different complexities and varied input parameter requirements. Studies have shown that models with many input parameters do not necessarily perform better than those with few input parameters. Basin morphometric parameters play significant roles in the conversion of rainfall to runoff and obtaining good estimates of these parameters for use in runoff models is sometime challenging as Inaccurate input into models can propagate errors and make the models to perform poorly. This study employs the method of principal component analysis to reduce the number of morphometric parameters required to run a runoff model without losing any major information. Parameters for five selected study basins in central Nigeria were measured and analysed. The result shows that three morphometric parameters (Fitness Ratio, Ruggedness Number and Watershed Eccentricity) can adequately represent other parameters as an input into a runoff model for the basins. This reduces significantly the time and effort needed to compute all the parameters which in actual fact may not improve the quality or efficiency of the runoff model.

The complementary spectrum of a connected graph G is the set of the complementary eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix of G. In this note, we discuss the possibility of representing G using this spectrum. On one hand, we give evidence that this spectrum distinguishes more graphs than other standard graph spectra. On the other hand, we show that it is hard to compute the complementary spectrum. In particular, we see that computing the complementary spectrum is equivalent to finding all connected induced subgraphs.

This study formulates and solves the problem of transverse damped vibration in the system of changing the boom radius in a truck crane with advanced cylinder design for controlling the boom radius. The dissipation of vibration energy in the model adopted in the study occurs as a result of internal damping of the viscoelastic material (rheological Kelvin-Voigt model) of the beams that model the system and movement resistance in the supports of the cylinder and crane boom to the bodywork frame of the crane. Damped frequencies of vibrations and degree of vibration amplitude decay were calculated. The study also presents eigenvalues of system vibration with respect to changes in damping coefficients and system geometry for a selected load.

Let $ A $ be a bounded linear operator in a complex separable Hilbert space, $ A^∗ $ be its adjoint one and $ A_I := (A − A^∗)//(2i) $. Assuming that $A_I $ is a Hilbert-Schmidt operator, we investigate perturbations of the imaginary parts of the eigenvalues of $ A $. Our results are formulated in terms of the “extended” eigenvalue sets in the sense introduced by T. Kato. Besides, we refine the classical Weyl inequality $ \Sigma_{k=1}^\infty (Im \lambda_k (A))^2 ≤ N_2^2 (A_I) $, where $ λk(A) (k = 1, 2, . . .) $ are the eigenvalues of $ A $ and $ N_2(·) $ is the Hilbert-Schmidt norm. In addition, we discuss applications of our results to the Jacobi operators.

The paper deals with the modal analysis of mechanical systems consisting of n identical masses connected with springs in such a way that the stiffness matrix has the form of a multiband symmetric matrix. The eigenvalue problem formulated for such systems is characterised by repeated eigenvalues to which linearly independent eigenvectors correspond. The solution to the eigenvalue problem has been found for an arbitrary, finite number of degrees of freedom for the fully coupled systems and the systems in which the masses are exclusively connected with the nearest neighbours. Depending on the property of the eigenvectors, two forms of the solution to the initial value problem have been derived. The general deliberations are illustrated with an example of the system with 10 degrees of freedom for 5 different degrees of coupling.
Praca dotyczy analizy modalnej układów mechanicznych, zbudowanych z n identycznych mas połączonych sprężynami w taki sposób, by macierz sztywności miała budowę wielopasmowej macierzy symetrycznej. Zagadnienie własne sformułowane dla tych układów charakteryzuje się wielokrotnymi wartościami własnymi, którym odpowiadają układy liniowo niezależnych wektorów własnych. W pracy podano analityczne rozwiązanie zagadnienia własnego dla dowolnej, skończonej liczby stopni swobody, dla układu w pełni sprzężonego i układu, w którym każda masa połączona jest wyłącznie z dwiema sąsiednimi. W zależności od własności wektorów własnych podano dwie postacie rozwiązania zagadnienia początkowego. Rozważania teoretyczne zilustrowano przykładem układu o 10 stopniach swobody, dla 5 różnych stopni sprzężenia.
