Opis:
Iris species have great economic importance for their use in ornamental and pharmaceutical industry. Flora of Turkey reports about 43 local taxons of which 16 are endemic. Iris suaveolens Boiss. et Reuter is an endemic species with high seed dormancy and has high tolerance to cold and drought. This study focused on seed dormancy break of I. suaveolens under in vitro conditions. In the first experiment, the seeds were given stratification treatment on MS medium containing different concentrations of BAP with or without NAA. The 2nd experiment reports effects of alternative combinations of cold (at 4°C, 24 h dark) – warm (16 h light photoperiod) conditions on medium containing different concentrations of plant growth regulators on agar solidified MS medium. Both experiments showed about 8.33% seed germination against 64.5% seed viability as confirmed by tetrazolium test. All germinating seeds were abnormal and very weak. In the third experiment, 10 minutes acid scarified seeds cultured at 24°C in 16 h light photo period on MS medium achieved 60.0% germination. Similar treatment under cold + dark condition was inhibitory and failed to show identical results. This underlines the importance of acid scarification, photoperiod and warm treatments of I. suaveolens seeds to break seed dormancy. All germinated seeds showed normal growth and development under field conditions.

This study analysed the effects of different treatments on breaking dormancy and germination of bitter vetch (Vicia ervilia L.) freshly harvested seeds for seeding immediately. Partial scarified seeds (30 seconds with sandpaper) were subjected to different treatments including: GA3 (250, 500 and 750 ppm), KNO3 (0.1, 0.2 and 0.3% w/v), cold stratification (2, 4 and 6 days), sulfuric acid (25, 50 and 75 seconds), hot water (90°C; for 2.5 and 5 minutes), hydropriming via seed soaking in distilled water (4 and 8 hours) and mechanical scarification. Among the mentioned treatments, cold stratification for 6 days had a best effect on germination related parameters final germination percentage, mean germination time and vigour index than the other periods. In contrast to scarification with acid and hot water, mechanical scarification improved germination parameters but this effect was lower than the cold stratification. The results suggest that bitter vetch seed has both physical and physiological dormancy.

Opis:
The investigation of dormancy release in Aesculus hippocastanum seeds was aimed at estimating the proportion of coat-imposed to embryo dormancy, and studying the growth initiation providing embryo dormancy release. During winter, horse chestnut seeds exhibited 16–17 week-lasting deep dormancy, which predominantly was determined by coat-imposed dormancy. Embryo dormancy lasted for 11–12 weeks of wet cold stratification. Embryo dormancy was weak, even the embryo axes excised from deeply dormant seeds were capable of extending to the size exceeding the axis length in intact seeds at radicle protrusion. Embryo dormancy release manifested itself in gradually increasing growth capacity of both embryo axes and cotyledonary petioles. The growth initiation in horse chestnut seeds occurs only by cell elongation. During growth initiation, a more rapid fresh weight gain was observed in comparison with length increment, thus indicating that accumulation of osmotically active substances and active water uptake by embryo axis cells were ahead of their increasing longitudinal cell wall extensibility. Cell wall loosening appeared to be directly related to embryo dormancy release. The hormonal regulation of embryo dormancy release in horse chestnut seeds is discussed.

The effect of various scarification method on breaking seed dormancy and germination enhancement in Annona muricata (Magnoliales: Annonaceae) was examined in this study via: mechanical scarification with sandpaper, file and stone; chemical scarification with 10, 25 and 50% H2SO4 for 5 seconds respectively; exposure to wet heat (hot water) for 1, 3 and 5 seconds; exposure to cold treatment by chilling in refrigerator of 4 ºC for 12, 18 and 24 hours; soaking in coconut water for 5, 10 and 15min and untreated seeds as the control. The results of the experiment showed that chemical scarification with H2SO4 at 50% for 5 seconds had significantly highest percentage germination (60%). This was followed by the seeds soaked in coconut water for 15 minutes (39.69). Seeds treated with 25% H2SO4 for 5 seconds had 30% germination. Other treatment were less or not effective. Untreated seeds had the least percentage germination (6%) with mean germination time of 40.20 and germination index of 0.27. The treatments that gave significantly higher germination percentages also produce low Mean Germination Time (30.01) and increased Germination Index (12.26). These characters shows that chemical scarification with H2SO4 at 50% for 5 seconds was the most effective treatment to break dormancy and enhancing seed germination in this species as revealed in this study.

Ferula assa-foetida and F. gummosa, Apiaceae, are important endemic and endangered medicinal plants. Survival of the species is threatened by climate change, overexploiting (as source of oleo-gum resin and for-age) and lack of organized cultivation. Cultivation of these valuable medicinal plants is restricted by insuffi-cient domestication knowledge. Germination characteristics of different populations of Ferula taxa were studied with the aim of describing and comparing their responses to continuous cold stratification condition. Germination cues for the species were complex, with dormancy mechanisms present to restrict germination until cold stratification are fulfilled. Results indicated that a period of 4 weeks of stratification is sufficient for germination of F. assa-foetida, but optimal germination of F. gummosa require stratification for periods of 8 weeks. Both species were able to germinate at very low temperatures (4°C). Within-taxon differences in dor-mancy breaking and seedling emergence may interpret as local adaptations. The continued regeneration and propagation of the species in the wild will depend on the temperature and moisture status of the soil during winter and the maintenance of conditions suitable for stratification for an appropriate length of time.

The aim of the research was to determine the occurrence of primary dormancy in seeds of 18 tomato genotypes (Solanum lycopersicum L.) – 16 cultivars and two local genotypes – regenerated for the active collection of the National Institute for Horticultural Research. The plants were grown in the field in accordance with the adopted methodology of seed reproduction in the collection of genetic resources of vegetable plants. Tomato fruits were harvested twice a week from July 18 to September 26, 2019. Immediately after harvest, the seeds were extracted from the fruit, cleaned and dried according to FAO standards for gene banks. The seeds prepared in this way were stored for a period of sixty weeks at a temperature of 4±2°C in airtight containers with the addition of silica gel. During this period, after twenty, forty and sixty weeks of storage, their germination was tested. The studied tomato genotypes differed significantly in terms of depth of primary dormancy and rate of releasing from dormancy. Two of the tested cultivars – ‘Parteno’ and ‘Reper’, were characterized by seed dormancy at the level of 44.5% and 35.5%, two genotypes – ‘Amber’ and the local genotype POLPOB17-27 were characterized by dormancy levels of 15% and 18%. Seeds of two of the genotypes studied that did not show primary dormancy twenty weeks after harvest – ‘Zealand’ and the local genotype POLPOB17-28 – after storage for sixty weeks showed a reduced germination rate and a longer mean germination time. It is concluded that the optimum time for testing the germination of tomato seeds stored after harvest at 4 °C is forty weeks after harvest. The level of primary dormancy of the seeds is then the lowest, but the induction of secondary dormancy does not occur yet. When testing the seed germination in an earlier period, dormancy breaking procedures should be considered to obtain correct results.

Opis:
The ecophysiological regulation of seed dormancy in perennial species and those with a varied life cycle has not been studied in detail yet. That is why an attempt has been made to determine the Cirsium arvense seed water relations during stratification and afterripening at different temperatures and germination at constant or fluctuating temperatures on the basis of the hydrotime model. The obtained results showed that breaking of the primary dormancy of achenes took place only during the first stratification month at moderate temperatures, mainly due to an increase in the average water-stress tolerance in a seed population. The induction of secondary seed dormancy during after-ripening at all temperatures resulted mostly from a substantial loss of the seeds' ability to tolerate water stress. Fluctuating temperatures affected neither seed germination nor the hydrotime model parameters. The analysis of the variations of hydrotime model parameters allows a better understanding of the physiological basis of seed dormancy relief and induction.

Savin juniper (Juniperus sabina L.) is a relict shrub in Poland with only one natural stand in Pieniny Mts. Se- eds require warm followed by cold stratification to overcome dormancy. Application of temperature regime at 20°/3°C layout, for 14 and 17 weeks respectively, is more effective than stratification at 15°/3°C. Interruption of warm stratification phase after 7 weeks and seeds drying at room temperature for 3-days with warm stratification follow-on resulted in increasing of germination capacity from 25% to approximately 45%. Germinated seeds pricked to substrate into containers gave seedlings 3 cm high when cultivated under plastic tunnel in the first vegetation season.

Experimental evidence is presented to support a hypothesis that terrestrial naked amoebae, collected during late autumn from cold, moist temperate soil, develop a non-encysted, freeze-thaw resistant stage that is capable of surviving winter frozen soil. Therefore, in addition to cyst formation, naked amoebae may survive harsh, frozen winter soil in a dormant or resting stage that is capable of rapid resumed growth in spring, thus gaining an immediate competitive advantage in exploiting food and other environmental resources early after the winter thaw.

Pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) is an important component of temperate forests in the north- ern hemisphere. It occurs naturally across Europe and in parts of North Africa, the Balkans, the Urals and the Caucasus. In Poland, it predominantly grows on the plains at ≤700 m a.s.l. The main objective of this study was to determine how different temperature-humidity growth conditions influence dormancy breakage and epicotyl emergence in Q. robur, using growth curve models. We also in- vestigated whether these differences result from changes in the climatic conditions under which the oak populations grow naturally. In this study, we selected four pedunculate oak stands in western and eastern Poland. These sites were char- acterised by oceanic and continental climates, respectively. Mature acorns were collected in the autumn of 2016 and pretreated for two weeks in the cold (4 °C). The acorns were then sown in plastic pots filled with a peat/sand substrate. Four climatic variants (cold-dry, cold-wet, warm-dry and warm-wet) and a control (average conditions) were used. Epicotyl emergence was monitored daily for 74 days. Epicotyl emergence dynamics (maximum absolute growth rate, lag time, T50), number of days to epicotyl emergence, and cu- mulative epicotyl emergence were measured or calculated. The acorns from oceanic climates required more intense warm humid conditions for epicotyl emergence than those from continental climates. In contrast, acorns from continental climates had an evolutionary advantage in that their epicotyl emergence occurred both in cold-dry and warm-wet seasons. This indicated that each population was adapted to its local environment.

The natural distribution of mountain almond is generally in the Southeast Region of Turkey. The present study carried out to determine the morphological and physiological characteristics of the seed of mountain almond. The seeds were collected from three different populations of A. arabica in Adıyaman. For different each populations seed weight, height, width, thickness, and 1000-seed weight were measured in the laboratory. Morphological characteristics of A. arabica seeds varied according to their populations. Seed germination tests were conducted at 20 °C, after prechilling for 0, 3, 6, and 9 weeks at 4 °C. Prechilling treatments of 3 weeks were insufficient, but 6 and 9 weeks of prechilling were found to eliminate seed dormancy and led to the highest germination percentage. The average germination percentage after 0, 3, 6, and 9 weeks of prechilling were 3.1%, 49.6%, 80.4%, and 81.1%, respectively. The average mean germination time was approximately between 8 and 10 days.

Improvement of Parkia seedling growth on plant height (PH) using seed dormancy breaking technologies in different soil media was investigated at nursery unit of Department for Forestry and Wildlife Management, Federal University Dutsin-Ma. Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four replicates was the design used. The data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) while the means were separated using Fishers’ Least Significant Difference (F-LSD; P≤ 0.05). Emergence of seeds was observed to commence four days after sowing (DAS) in mechanically scarified seeds (MS). The top soil added with mycorrhiza at 120 g (M120+) had significantly higher value (24.01) on PH at 10 weeks after sowing (WAS) in the main effect. In the interactive effect, seeds soaked in 98 % concentrated tetraoxosulphate (V1) (H2SO4) for 2 and 4 minutes (A2 and A4) and sowed in sterilized top soil (SS) and non-sterilized (NS) had significantly higher values (16.70 and 16.25) and (27.60 and 28.25) on PH at 4 and 12 WAS respectively. Seeds soaked in H2SO4 for 6 minutes (A6) and sowed in M120+ had higher value (15.60) on PH at 4 WAS. MS in M60+, hot water (HW) at 80 ºC and 100 ºC for 10 and 5 minutes had higher effect (16.52 and 16.48) on PH at 4 WAS. MS in HW at 60 ºC for 15 minutes and HW 80 ºC in M60+ was significant on PH (26.80, 27.85 and 29.00) at 12 WAS. HW 60 ºC in SS had higher effect (15.95) on PH at 4 WAS. In conclusion, mechanically scarified seeds, seeds soaked in H2SO4 acid for 2-6 minutes and in hot water between 60 ºC to 100 ºC for at most 15 minutes break Parkia dormancy and grow rapidly in ectomycorrhiza soil.

Opis:
The camaroid graptolite Xenotheka klinostoma Eisenack, 1937 is described from the lower Llanvirn limestones of Gilbergabrottet, northern Öland, Sweden. Two distinct autothecal morphs are recognized: (1) normal morph (described for the first time), i.e. an autotheca with an unsculptured outer surface, devoid of both an outer lining and autothecal occlusion, and inhabited by an active zooid; and (2) sealed morph, i.e. an autotheca coated and occluded, provided with a sculptured outer lining made of a unique verrucose fabric, and inhabited by an inactive or dormant zooid. In addition, the existence of a hypothetical (3) unsealed morph or re−opened autotheca, devoid of an autothecal occlusion but provided with an outer lining, and inhabited by a reactivated zooid, is predicted. The sealed morphs may represent an adaptation which allowed their inhabitants to survive adverse conditions. The outer lining of Xenotheka is compared with a peculiar outer membrane found in the modern hemichordate Rhabdopleura, from the intertidal zone of Fiji, and with camaroid extracamaral tissue.

Opis:
Seeds of numerous trees and shrubs require specific environmental conditions to initiate ger- mination. In the genus Cotoneaster, seeds often remain dormant in the ground for 1–2 years. Therefore, knowledge of the method of breaking seed dormancy under controlled conditions is needed. Various tem- peratures of stratification and chemical scarification were tested in this work to break deep double seed dormancy under controlled conditions in C. divaricatus, C. horizontalis and C. hupehensis. Fruits were collected in October, when they were fully ripe. The seeds extracted from the fruits were air-dried at room temper- ature to a moisture content of approximately 10%. Fresh and air-dried seeds were subjected to different variants of cold stratification or warm-cold stratification with different alternating temperatures. The hard seeds of C. hupehensis were also scarified in concentrated sulfuric acid, followed by warm stratification. A seed was counted as germinated when a 1–3 mm long radicle appeared. After stratification (ca. 5% seed ger- mination), seeds were tested for germination and emergence. The dormancy of air-dried C. divaricatus and C. horizontalis seeds was broken most effectively by stratification for 12–16 weeks at 20°/30°C (16/8 hours), followed by 15–18 weeks at 3°C. Scarification in concentrated sulfuric acid for 3 hours followed by warm- cold stratification at 20°/30°C (4 weeks) and 3°C (18 weeks) resulted in the highest germination (48%) of C. hupehensis seeds at 3°/20°C (16/8 hours). In our experiment, we demonstrated that the physiological and physical dormancy of Cotoneaster species can be broken under controlled conditions with stratification or stratification combined with scarification methods

Opis:
The most advantageous time for collecting fruits of the common hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna Jacq.) falls on October, when they are fully ripe. The stones extracted from the fruits must be dried at room temperature to the moisture content of about 10%. The dormancy of the common hawthorn seeds can be overcome by their stratification in a moist medium in one of the three thermal regimes: - 25°/3°C (16 weeks at 25°C followed by 15-18 weeks at 3°C, i.e. to the time when the first seedlings start to appear) - 20~30°/3°C (16 weeks at 20~30°C (16+8 hrs/day) followed by 15-18 weeks at 3°C, i.e. to the time when first seedlings start to appear) - 20~30°/3°C (16 weeks at 20~30°C (24+24 hrs) followed by 15-18 weeks at 3°C, i.e. to the time when first seedlings start to appear) Having been stratified, the seeds germinate vigorously (in 3-5 weeks) and at a high percentage at temperatures of 3~10°, 3~15°, 3~20° and 3~25°C, (16+8 hrs/day) and the seedlings emerge at 3~20°C (16+8 hrs/day) in 4-6 weeks. Storage for one year at -3°C in the case of the seeds dried after harvest to the moisture content of 10% does not reduce their germination capacity. Stones scarification in concentrated sulphuric acid for 120 minutes followed by stratification at 3°C has an adverse effect on seed emergence at the temperature 3~20°C (16+8 hrs/day). It is recommended that stratified seeds should be sown into the still cool soil at the end of March or the beginning of April, as the increased temperature induces the secondary dormancy in seeds.

We found that changes in the activity of enzymes are not linear, and 2-3 stages may be distinguished. Dormancy breaking and seed germination is associated with a high activity of PFK and PEPC, and a high glucose level in embryo axes.

The effects of stratification and scarification on seed dormancy breaking were compared in scarlet hawthorn (Crataegus pedicellata Sarg. = C. coccinea L). Ripe fruits were collected (in October) and the extracted nutlets were cleaned, and dried to a moisture content of 9–12%. Seed dormancy in this species was broken most effectively by warm-followed-by-cold stratification of nutlets, in a substrate or without any substrate, as well as at 15~25° or 20~30°C, i.e. with a cyclically alternating warm stage (16+8 hrs or 24+24 hrs/cycle) lasting 16–20 weeks, followed by the cold stage at 3°C lasting ca. 20 weeks, i.e. till the appearance of the first germinating seeds. After stratification, emergence rate is equally high (ca 76%) at cyclically alternating temperatures of 3~15°C or 3~20°C (16+8 hrs). Chemical scarification of nutlets in 96% sulphuric acid for 2 hrs, followed by warm-cold stratification at 20~30°/3°C, with a short, 4-weeks warm stage, also ensures a high emergence rate (85–93%). Seed desiccation (in nutlets) slowly to moisture content of 12–14%, after stratification in a substrate or scarification does not reduce the seedling emergence of seeds. Emergence decreased when seeds were desiccated after stratification without any substrate. Results provide new methods of breaking of dormancy and high germination and emergence of hard-coated Crataegus seeds in controlled conditions.

Effects of several stratification variants on seed dormancy breaking were compared in Crataegus submollis Sarg. (hairy cockspur-thorn or Quebec hawthorn). Ripe seeds were collected (in October), cleaned, and dried to a moisture content of 7–12%. Seed dormancy in this species was broken most effectively by warm-cold stratification of nutlets, in a substrate or without any substrate, at 15~25°/3°C or 20~30°/3°C, i.e. with a cyclically alternating warm stage (16+8 hrs or 24+24 hrs/cycle) lasting 16–20 weeks, followed the cold stage lasting ca. 20 weeks, i.e. till the appearance of the first germinating seeds. Chemical scarification of nutlets in 96% sulphuric acid for 3 hrs, followed by warm-cold stratification at 20~30°/3°C, with a short, 4-week warm stage, also ensures a high emergence rate (58%). Seed desiccation (in nutlets) slowly to a moisture content of 10–12%, after stratification in a substrate or without any substrate as well as after scarification, results in a reduced emergence rate, especially if seeds are dried to the lower moisture content. Seed storage (in nutlets after drying to a moisture content of 10%) for 10 years at –3°C, does not decrease the emergence rate (93%) after stratification at 20~30°/3°C in a substrate, with a cyclically alternating warm stage (24+24 h) lasting 16 weeks.

Przebadano 23 odmiany (Bogatka, Boryna, Danuta, Etiuda, Eurostar, Gwiazda, Hermes, Honorata, Hubal, Ignacy, Igor, Innovator, Jubilat, Jurata, Jurek, Kaszub, Lavinia, Malaga, Mondeo, Oberon, Riviera, Sylvana, VR 808). Bulwy do badań pobierano z poletek zgodnie z urzędowymi terminami pobierania prób do badań weryfikacyjnych. Do przerywania spoczynku wykorzystano metodę polegającą na 15 minutowym moczeniu wycinków bulw w wodnym roztworze gibereliny, tiomocznika, Biseptolu 480 (sulfamethoxazolum, trimethoprimum) i daminozydu (B-Nine 85 SP). Większość badanych odmian miała relatywnie łatwy do przerwania spoczynek.
Presented studies evaluated the effectiveness of breaking the tuber dormancy immediately after harvest for new potato varieties, as a part of procedure of the grow-out test. Knowledge of this varietal characteristics significantly improves the performance of the grow-out test executed right after harvest. Examined varieties (23) were following: Bogatka, Boryna, Danuta, Etiuda, Eurostar, Gwiazda, Hermes, Honorata, Hubal, Ignacy, Igor, Innovator, Jubilat, Jurata, Jurek, Kaszub, Lavinia, Malaga, Mondeo, Oberon, Riviera, Sylvana, VR 808. Tuber samples were collected from the plots according to the official schedule of tuber sampling for virus indexation. To break the dormancy, eye-plugs were soaked for 15 min in aqueous solution of gibberellic acid, thiourea, Biseptol 480 (Sulfamethoxazolum, Trimethoprimum) and daminozide (B-Nine 85 SP). For most of the studied cultivars it was relatively easy to break the dormancy. In the case of cultivars Boryna, Hermes and Sylvana, breaking was slightly more difficult, therefore, it is preferable to shift the treatment to at least 2–3 weeks after harvesting. Cultivars Hubal and Etiuda required at least 5 weeks of resting for efficient dormancy breaking. For these cultivars sprouting occurred only for 36–64% eye-plugs if dormancy was broken too early. There was no correlation between the length of the resting period of each variety and difficulty of the dormancy breaking. However, when analyzed by different groups of maturity significant negative correlation was observed (r = -0.66) in the medium early cultivars indicating that a longer resting period in these varieties is relatively easier to break.

European bladder nut has its northern limit in Poland and is legally protected. Climatic conditions, edible seeds attractive for small animals and seed dormancy to a large extent affect its restocking under natural conditions. The aim of this study was to determine conditions for seed dormancy release. Nuts dried after collection to ca 11% of moisture content (fresh weight basis) may be stored without loss of seed viability for over 1 year in a cold store at the temperature of -3oC. For the purpose of seed dormancy release nuts need to be stratified. Seed dormancy release was found highest after the application of warm-followed-by-cold stratification, first for 4-6 weeks at the temperature of 15oC or at cyclically alternating temperature of 10~20oC (24+24 h/cycle), followed by 16-18 weeks at 3oC. Seeds germinate at 3oC with the same rate as at cyclically alternating temperature of 3~15oC (16+8 h/day). Drying of nuts at room temperature to approx. 11% during the warm stratification phase (after 2 or 4 weeks) and further stratification resulted in a significant increase in seed germinability. In some seed lots scarification of nuts (dried during the warm stratification phase) contributes to a further significant increase of seed germinability.

In order to survive periods of adverse cold climatic conditions, plant requirements are satisfi ed by means of physiological adaptations to prevent cells from freezing. Thus, the growth of woody plants in temperate regions slows down and they enter into a physiological state called dormancy. In order to identify the chilling and heat requirements to overcome the dormancy period of Cupressaceae pollen type in the south of Europe, we have carried out our study with aerobiological data from a 10-year (1996- 2005) period in Ponferrada, León (Spain). For the chilling requirements the best result was with a threshold temperature of 7.1ºC and an average of 927 CH. Calculation of heat requirements was carried out with maximum temperature, with 490 growth degree days (GDD) needed, with a threshold temperature of 0ºC. We have used the 2002-2003, 2003- 2004 and 2004-2005 periods in order to determine the real validity of the model. We have not used these years in developing the models. The dates predicted differ in only a few days from those observed: in 2002-2003 there was a difference of 11 days, in 2003-2004 predicted and observed dates were the same, but in 2004-2005 the difference obtained was of 43 days.

Fruits of large-leaved lime dried to 10% may be stored for 16 years in sealed containers at –3°C without loosing seed viability. Dormancy of seeds, extracted from hard fruit coats, may be released after chemical scarification in concentrated sulphuric acid for 10 minutes, followed-by stratification without any medium (chilling) at the temperature of 3°C, for 20–24 weeks, i.e. until the first seeds start to germinate. After such pretreatment, during the germination test conducted at alternating temperatures 3~15°C (16 + 8 hours/day) seeds germinate near 90% in several weeks. For seedling production scarified and stratified seeds should be sown in early spring into trays under a plastic tunnel which ensures a high percentage of seedlings emergence. Sowing of the pretreated seeds in spring in a open nursery gives poor results.

Opis:
Seed dormancy is of particular importance in the cultivation of cereals, as it directly affects the quality of crop yield. If the dormancy period is too short, this may lead to pre-harvest sprouting, whereas a dormancy period that is too long may cause uneven germination; both of these scenarios are associated with economic losses. Most enzymes engaged in the metabolism of abscisic acid (ABA) have been identified, and significant progress has been made in understanding the role of this phytohormone in the induction and maintenance of dormancy, mainly as a result of research conducted in Arabi-dopsis. Much less is known about the metabolism and function of ABA in cereal grains, especially in relation to dormancy and germination. This review focuses on the regulation of ABA metabolism in dormant and non-dormant cereal grains, in both the dry state and upon imbibition. Moreover, this review describes the influence of factors such as after-ripening, light, temperature, nitric oxide, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) on the dormancy and germination of cereal grains. These factors, with the exception of ROS, appear to affect the level of dormancy and germination of grains through regulation of ABA metabolism.

Opis:
In Iran, Descurainia sophia, Malcolmia africana, and Thlaspi arvense are abundantly found as importunate weeds in winter cereal. Understanding the timing of seed germination under natural conditions is crucial for learning how to manage these annual weeds. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the effect of soil burial, dry storage, cold stratification, KNO3, GA3, and scarification on the seed dormancy and germination of these three species. Species had significantly different responses to the treatment. In D. sophia, seeds buried at a depth of 10 cm for 60 days (55%), and seeds dry stored at 20°C for 180 days (45%) showed the highest level of germination. In M. africana, the germination percentage reached 95% when seeds buried at a depth of 1 cm were soaked in a GA3 concentration of 150 ppm. T. arvense had the lowest level of germination compared to the other species. The highest percentage of T. arvense germination was obtained in seeds treated with 150 ppm GA3. Potassium nitrate partly increased germinability in seeds of M. africana, which initially were less dormant than those of T. arvense and D. sophia.

Opis:
Materiał doświadczalny stanowiły 32 linie Triticum durum Desf. i jedna wzorcowa odmiana Triticum aestivum L. Kłosy zebrane w polu moczono w wodzie (15 minut) i umieszczano w komorze wilgotnościowej.
The experimental material consisted of 32 lines of Triticum durum Desf. and one standard variety of Triticum aestivum L.. Ears harvested in the field were soaked in water (15 minutes) and placed in moist chamber. The resistance to sprouting was evaluated after 3 and 7 days. The ears were dried in dryer and threshed manually with separation of sprouted grains from those not sprouted. Simultaneously, the germination of grains was measured on a filter paper in Petri dishes. This evaluation was repeated after 4 and 8 weeks. Last time sprouting in 10-4 M solution of abscisic acid was carried out. Grain responsiveness to ABA was given in percentage as the quotient of the result of subtraction of average values of germination energy in water and ABA, and the value in water. Under the moist chamber conditions the standard of common wheat variety showed high resistance to sprouting. The results proved a high variability of durum wheat lines with regard to visible grain sprouting (W = 99% after 3 days and W = 50.7% at the second notice). The most resistant lines of T. durum sprouted on the level of standard T. aestivum variety (at the first time 13 lines, at the second time 1). Heritability coefficients in broad sense estimated for grain sprouting were very high (h2 = 0.93 and 0.92 – respectively for the 3 days and the 7 days results). The estimations of visible sprouting of moistened ears after 3 and 7 days were correlated with germination energy (rxy = 0.408 and 0.608) which were evaluated at the same time in Petri dishes. In majority of the studied lines of durum wheat the visible grain sprouting in ears was distinctly lower than germination ability determined in Petri dishes. In three lines sprouting in ear was higher than germination on a filter paper. The correlation coefficients between grain sprouting in ears and ABA responsiveness coefficients, assessed after post-harvest period, were in our study not significant.

Opis:
Wildolive seeds (Olea europaea L. var. sylvestris), calledoleaster do not germinate when placedunder favourable conditions. In a series of experiments the effects of the harvest date, the endosperm, the tegument, andthe coldtreatment were evaluatedon germination of seeds andembryos. The germination percentage of embryos and seeds harvested at different harvest dates increased during October month, these percentages decreased during November month, whereas no seeds and embryos harvested on the middle of December germinated. Embryo germinability was always higher than seed germinability, and this may be due to an inhibiting effect of the teguments and the endosperm on seed germination. Such dormancy, which gradually increased during maturation, could reside mainly in the endosperm and partly within the embryo. The cold treatment at 4°C for four to thirteen days increased seed and embryo germinability, whereas lengthening time at this temperature showeda negative effect on seedgermination. The germination of seeds andembryos from six wildolive trees was also examinedby recording the germination percentage andminimum imbibition time (Tmi).

Opis:
Carbohydrates were analyzed in Norway maple embryo axes and cotyledons after imbibition, in the middle of cold stratification, before germination and during radicle protrusion to 8-10 mm and 20-25 mm. Simultaneously desiccation tolerance of seeds was determined by tetrazolium (TTC) test, after desiccation of seeds to 10-20% of water content. The cotyledons were tolerant to desiccation throughout all stratification and germination period. Embryo axes became sensitive to desiccation when hypocotyls-radicle protrusion reached 20-25 mm length. In this period the significant increase of monosaccharides: glucose, fructose and galactose in embryo axes occurred. This was not observed in cotyledons. During the germination period significant decrease of sucrose and raffinose content was noted in embryo axes and cotyledons. Relatively less changes appeared in stachyose content in embryo axes while in cotyledons it decreased evidently. The mass ratio of sucrose to oligosaccharides was higher in cotyledons of germinated seeds. The marked decrease of mass ratio of oligo to monosaccharides was observed in embryo axes in the last period of germination. The role of carbohydrates in loosing tolerance to desiccation in germinated Norway maple seeds is discussed.

Opis:
W trzech seriach doświadczeń przeprowadzonych w latach 2004–2006 badano kiełkowanie 3 odmian nagoziarnistych (Akt, Cacko, Polar) oraz 2 oplewionych odmian owsa (Bajka i Skrzat) w temperaturach: 10, 15, 20 i 25°C. Zdolność kiełkowania przyjmowała najczęściej wartości ponad 95%, a sporadycznie występujące większe wahania były rezultatem zmienności sezonowej, terminu oceny i warunków inkubacji.
In three series of experiments conducted in the years 2004–2006 germination of seeds of three naked oat cultivars (Akt, Cacko and Polar) and two hulled oat cultivars (Bajka and Skrzat) was investigated at the following temperatures: 10, 15, 20 and 25°C. On the basis of observations collected at intervals of 24 hours germinabilty of the seeds, mean germination time and dynamics of germination were estimated. In most cases the germinability of seeds exceeded 95%, sporadic fluctuations in value of this index were caused by seasonal variability, evaluation date and conditions during seeds incubation. The effect of various temperatures during seeds incubation on germination process was more long-lasting in the hulled oat cultivars as compared to the naked ones. The results of final evaluation of germinability of seeds, mean germination time and dynamics of germination carried out on the 8th day as well as on the 10th day of seeds incubation were similar. This fact points to a possibility of evaluation of germinability in naked oat cultivars in 8-days period. The process of germination of naked and hulled oat cultivars’ seeds, which were incubated at 25°C directly after harvest showed deeper dormancy of the hulled cultivars’ seeds as compared to the naked ones.

Opis:
Laboratory experiments were made to determine the optimum conditions for dormancy breaking in the midland hawthorn (Crataegus laevigata (Poir.) DC. = C. oxyacantha L.). Its small applelike fruits should be collected when they are fully ripe (in Poland in October). The nutlets extracted from the fruits must be dried at room temperature to the moisture content of 9–13%. The dormancy of midland hawthorn seeds can be overcome by: (1) stratification in a moist medium: 20~30°C/3°C, 16–20 weeks at 20~30°C (16+8 hrs or 24+24 hrs) followed by 16–18 weeks at 3°C, i.e. to the time when first radicles start to appear; or (2) chemical scarification in concentrated sulphuric acid for 2 or 3 hrs, followed by warm stratification at 27.5°C or 20~30°C for 4 weeks and cold stratification at 3°C, lasting 19–21 weeks, i.e. to the time when first radicles start to appear. The stratified seeds germinate vigorously (in 3–5 weeks) and at a high percentage at temperatures of 3~15°C or 3~20°C (16+8 hrs) and all seedlings emerge in such conditions about 4–6 weeks after sowing. Seed germination after stratification or scarification can be stopped by partial desiccation of seeds. Seed desiccation after stratification to the moisture content of 10–13% and sealed storage at –3°C for one year do not reduce seed germination and seedling emergence rates of the previously pretreated seeds. Storage for 20 months at –3°C of seeds dried after harvest to the moisture content of 14% does not reduce their germination and seedling emergence.
