Opis:
In a world of constantly growing streams of information, extensive transparency in public and private environment as well as recent financial crises, it seems to be essential to enhance reporting to a higher, more sophisticated level that considers these changes. Especially, the worldwide financial crisis showed that a separated view on financial and non-financial reporting and an orientation on solely short-term information are no longer appropriate for many stakeholders. Integrated Reporting - representing a symbiosis of financial and non-financial information - might be a solution to satisfy the changing stakeholder needs. In order to establish this idea, the International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC) was initiated aiming to provide quantitative and qualitative guidance in form of a framework for organizations on how to conduct integrated reporting. One of the main questions that arises within this context is whether IR is "a one size fits all"-solution or if there is a substantial need for sector-specific requirements. Therefore, this article provides not only a theoretical background on the concept of IR but also shows some results of experiences examining reporting habits of several, cross-sectoral companies participating in the IIRC's pilot programme. Additionally, general and sector-specific requirements as well as chances, challenges and a prospect of IR have to be considered. This article analyses if a general framework on IR is sufficient or if there is the necessity to work on sector-specific requirements.

Opis:
Nabyta wartość firmy (dodatnia, ujemna) kształtuje bilansową wartość przedsiębiorstwa, stąd jej prezentacja, ujawnianie i rozliczanie reguluje prawo bilansowe. Wewnętrzna wartość firmy stanowi o sile i pozycji przedsiębiorstwa na rynku, a także jest składnikiem kreującym rynkową wartość przedsiębiorstwa.
Diverse theoretical and practical approaches to the goodwill have impact on: the variety of classifications, relationships with accounting (disclosures, non-disclosures) and also influence balance sheet value and/or market value of an enterprise. Based on the subject literature analysis and the conducted studies, from both scientific and practical perspective, a conclusion can be drawn that the debatable issues referring to goodwill cover, e.g.: its objective scope, selecting an optimal set of creating factors, valuation methods and presentation forms, but also the possibilities for manipulating balance sheet value and market value of an enterprise. The acquired assets (goodwill, badwill) have impact on an enterprise balance sheet value and, thus, its presentation, disclosure and settlement are regulated by balance law. The intrinsic company value determines enterprise strength and position on the market and represents the condition creating its market value.

Opis:
The primary objective of this article is to investigate the impact of culture (as measured by Hofstede) on disclosures in financial statements prepared under International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) by firms from different countries. The sample comprises 20112013 consolidated financial statements of stock companies (excluding banks, insurance, and other financial institutions) from four countries representing different cultural areas: the United Kingdom (Anglo), Germany (Germanic), Poland (Central Eastern Europe; CEE) and Kuwait (Arab). The research material came from 312 annual consolidated financial statements from 104 companies. The results reveal that cultural values have a significant impact on financial disclosures even after the use of IFRS. The paper is one of the few comparative studies attempting to assess the effects of culture on financial disclosures in Western Europe countries, CEE countries and Arab countries. Most of the international comparative studies in this research area have neglected CEE and Arab countries.

The International Accounting Standard Board (IASB) aimed to increase the decision usefulness of firms’ risk disclosures with the 2007 introduction of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) 7. Specifically, listed firms were mandated to provide information to the market on both their (1) exposure and (2) risk management, which are associated with holding their financial instruments. This study investigates whether IFRS 7 financial instruments and their disclosures are associated with firm valuation. Using data on premiumlisted United Kingdom (UK) companies, for the period 2007–2019, I find evidence that firm value (proxied by Tobin's Q) is negatively associated with the quantity of IFRS 7 interest and credit risk disclosures. I further find that the market value decreases with the presence of quantitative information tabulated in the disclosures. The findings of this study have important implications for the IASB's standard-setting process.

The purpose of this paper is to identify the effects of the implementation of selected regulations on corporate governance in the reporting practice of banks listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. The survey examined the disclosures concerning the main features of the internal control and risk management systems in relation to financial reporting in banks. Research studies on disclosures related to control over financial reporting have not yet been conducted. The paper uses a research method involving the analysis of annual reports disclosed by banks. The method of induction was used in the process of inference. The results of the study indicate that in the practice of reporting of banks listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange in 2011, there was no uniform reporting form in terms of the presentation of information on internal control or risk management systems in relation to financial reporting. The disclosures were different both in terms of level of detail and content. In some banks disclosures were drawn at a high level of generality.

Methodology/approach: The study is conceptual and was prepared based on a literature review and the results of previous empirical research. Findings: The proposed method of constructing a maturity index enables the measure-ment of the quality of narrative disclosures of risk areas and factors on a universal five-point scale. Research limitations/implications: The proposed index has been designed with entities that operate in non-financial sectors in mind. Originality/value: The index is a universal tool that can be used in narrative research on risk reports and in improving the practices of preparing annual reports of enterprises from non-financial sectors

Opis:
Purpose: The purpose of the article is to determine whether and what impression management techniques are used by Polish listed energy-sector companies in their non-financial reporting to possibly create not a true but an embellished image of their operations. Methodology/approach: The research entailed examining the non-financial annual reports published (in Polish) by eight large, listed companies. Both quantitative content analysis, to determine the scope of environmental disclosures, and qualitative content analysis, which focused on the visual and narrative style, were applied. The word count method was also applied concerning the positive (good) and negative (bad) wording used in the reports. Our linguistic analysis took into account both the semantic and inflexion aspects of Polish idiomatic expressions. Findings: We found that the companies exploited various manipulation techniques, both in the visualisation and the narrative used in their non-financial reports. Perfect graphics, blameless narrative style, or dynamic text organisation are among the top positive aspects. At the other end of the scale are aspects such as excessive wording, unnecessary repetitions of various keywords, or the intentional omission of adverse vocabulary. While both sets of techniques are more likely to be applied by bigger entities, smaller companies do not seem to care as much for such details. Research implications/limitations: This research provides a valuable contribution to a better understanding of how companies employ modern narrative-oriented information management techniques relating to readers’ perceptions of non-financial statements. This may lead to enhancing formal requirements concerning the quality of non-financial disclosure in corporate reporting. The research was limited to only eight (all) energy companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange for the financial years 2017–2020. Thus, there is a need to investigate whether other listed companies use impression management techniques in non-financial reporting. Originality/value: This article is the first publication to show how Polish large energy-sector joint-stock companies manage their environmental impression in non-financial reporting. The analysis extends the knowledge on creating a business operations image that is favourable to stakeholders by companies with a high environmental impact. This is of particular importance considering the non-financial reporting obligation that such entities have to meet as per Directive 2014/95/EU.

Opis:
Theoretical background: Banks, due to their nature and a specific role in the economy, are subject to significant regulations in the field of their activities. Currently, the increasing importance of ESG regulations is noticeable, which is on the one hand the result of changing requirements within the EU, as well as ownership requirements and noticeable market pressure. Non-financial disclosures in the area of ESG are becoming permanent and important element of the information policy of banks. Banks manage to monitor the indicators of their own environmental policy or disclose social and employee issues, although this certainly involves additional reporting burdens, and the scope of disclosures as well as the degree of their significance still vary. Purpose of the article: The aim of the study is to identify, systematize and evaluate EU regulations in the area of ESG disclosures relating to the banking sector, taking into account the identification of major limitations related to their implementation. Research methods: The literature review as well as ESG reporting regulations overview and a case study which presents the ESG disclosure practice. Main findings: Effective communication of a bank with its stakeholders is of a crucial importance. As indicated, the legal solutions in this area are new, there are possibilities for their different interpretation, the practice has also not yet been developed. In addition, and perhaps above all, information on the imple mentation of environmental goals indicated in the Taxonomy flows to banks from their clients. Therefore, the approach of bank customers to the discussed issues is important, while for banks it is and will be a huge challenge to verify whether the financed investment is actually ecological and the business activity of the bank’s client is sustainable.

Credit risk assessment is an inherent component of banking activity and it is crucial to analyse time aspect of credit risk. During that assessment banks ought to use only reliable documents to achieve reasonable results. Financial statements should not be the one and only data source support loan decision but they are indispensable. This study is a part of research trend assessing auditors’ independence. The purpose of it was twofold. Firstly, to determine if there exists significant dependence between business continuity evidenced by bankruptcies and going-concern warnings paragraphs (GCW) in auditors’ opinion. Secondly, to examine possible interrelation of existence GCW in auditors’ opinion and non-audit fees earned by these auditors. The research question for this paper is whether banks and other creditors may still base on financial statements and auditor’s opinions. To the limitation that the aim of this paper was not to give clear answer which measure of going-concern risk is most appropriate, it presents outcomes of an investigation of a sample of companies quoted on Warsaw Stock Exchange (Poland) main market, that submitted request for bankruptcy to the court register between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2013.

Purpose: The main aim of our study is to verify whether the implementation of non-financial reporting regulations, following the adoption of Directive 2014/95/EU, in-creased disclosures on diversity and equal opportunities in Polish listed firms. We study whether the diversity and equal opportunities disclosures differ significantly if we compare the information presented in companies’ non-financial reports in the pre-Directive period (2016) and the post-Directive period (2018). Methodology/approach: Guided by Clarkson et al. (2008), as well as by the Global Rerporting Initiative (GRI) standards, we have applied manual content analysis, using the coding scheme that is useful in capturing the types of disclosures. We implement Wilcoxon signed ranks test to verify the statistical significance of the differences between the diversity and equal opportunities disclosures in the pre- and post-Directive periods. Findings: Our evidence suggests that disclosures on diversity and equal opportunities in Poland significantly increased after the implementation of the Directive, but the patterns of the prevalence of disclosure types have remained stable. Research limitations/implications: This evidence is provided for a relatively small sample of Polish listed firms (N=19) that issued CSR/sustainability reports in 2016 and 2018, which could be considered a limitation of our study. Nevertheless, our study has practical implications within the impacts of the regulatory framework of companies’ reporting schemes, as far as diversity and equal opportunities (DEO) disclosures are concerned. Originality/value: Our evidence fills an important gap within the studies that review the implementation of the Directive in developing European economies. At the same time, it provides evidence within the emerging field of studies that compare the various types of disclosures before and after the implementation of the EU Directive, which is relevant for revising the impact of regulatory frameworks on non-financial reporting.
