Opis:
The current spill response capability in Finland is built to respond to oil spills caused by heavy fuel oils and the most transported oil cargoes. However, the implementation of the Sulphur Directive in 2015 changed the fuel profiles of the ships: prior to the new regulation ships operating in the Baltic Sea mainly used heavy fuel oil (HFO), whereas now ships use marine gas oil (MGO DMA) or marine diesel (MDO DMB) known as marine distillate fuels. This paper reviews the effectiveness of the current recovery techniques in responding to spills of marine distillate fuels based on the oil recovery field tests. The results indicate that conventional recovery techniques are only partially applicable to marine distillate fuels, which calls for a reassessment of the marine oil spill response capability and further research. The use and availability of low-carbon marine fuels will continue to increase as emission regulations become more stringent. This will require a continuous assessment of the oil recovery capabilities and the adaptation of spill response preparedness accordingly.

Opis:
One way to cut down the consumption of diesel fuel in domestic heating in Jordan is to blend it with shale oil, which may be extracted from oil shale. This leads to a cut down in the national fuel bill in Jordan. Unfortunately, shale oil contains significant amounts of sulfur as impurities and upon burning sulfur oxides are emitted causing a negative environmental impact, and hence desulfurization of such fuel blends is essential. This may be achieved by adding activated carbon to the fluids. The process of removing sulfur from shale oil is crucial for safeguarding the environment, human well-being, and equipment, as well as meeting regulatory requirements and creating superior-quality goods. In this study, a domestic boiler was utilized to evaluate the degree of desulfurization process of blends of diesel and shale oil fuels upon their burning in a domestic boiler, to achieve this, blends of both fuels were prepared with varying amounts of shale oil (10%, 20%, 30%, and 40%) and various amounts of activated carbon were added to the prepared mixtures of diesel fuel and shale oil. The assessment of performance included examining the environmental impact, specifically by analyzing exhaust gases to measure the concentration of Sulfur Oxide (SO2). It was found that an increase in the concentration of shale oil in the mixture led to an increase in the concentration of SO2. However, adding more activated carbon to the mixture from the fuels resulted in a decrease in the SO2 concentration. The lowest SO2 concentration was observed when 1g of activated carbon was added per liter of the fuel mixture at a 20% concentration of shale oil, and 0.6g of activated carbon per liter of the fuel mixture at a 40% concentration of oil shale.

The drilling of any oil and gas well is accompanied by the use of drilling fluids consisting of chemical reagents and materials of varying degrees of environmental hazard. The existing drilling waste disposal technologies are expensive, energyand labor-intensive, and do not always contribute to the formation of environmentally friendly compounds. In this regard, the possibility of using destructor microorganisms capable of growing and exhibiting biochemical activity under the conditions of complex pollution, in an environment with a high content of hydrocarbons, surfactants and polymer additives capable of biodegrading these substances, is relevant. In connection with the foregoing, the search for new strains of bacteria for the disposal of drilling waste, which are resistant to the conditions of complex toxic effects of drill cuttings components and, at the same time, capable of providing a significant degree of detoxification of the reagents that are part of hydrocarbon-based solutions, is relevant.

Modern cooling systems for large ships are quite complex. As a rule, such systems are common (combined) for the main and auxiliaries engines. With the auxiliary engines running constantly, even when parked, this system design allows to keep it warm and ready for a quick start of the main engines at any time. Currently, various schemes of such systems are used, including those that are irrational from our point of view. At the same time, there are systems whose schemes are quite consistent with our idea of the rational forms of such structures. It is important to note, and it is saying about it in an article, that such schemes may have a number of significant differences, but at the same time they will comply with the rationality principle if certain rules for the formation of such systems are followed. These schemes will have close compactness. It is also important that there is the possibility of further improvement of such schemes based on certain rules. This improvement is possible due to the introduction of additional heat dissipaters and the organization of appropriate chains of heat sources and heat dissipaters. The article discusses various options for rational schemes of the cooling system for the same ship power plant, as well as the possibility of further improvement of this scheme. It is shown that an increase in the number of coolants of the internal circuit coolant from one to three can reduce the total mass of the heat exchanger cores by 18 %.

Opis:
This study investigates combustion and emission characteristics of a contemporary single-cylinder compression ignition engine fuelled with diesel, fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO). These two drop-in fuels have an increasing share in automotive supply chains, yet have substantially different physical and auto-ignition properties. HVO has a lower viscosity and higher cetane number, and FAME has contrary characteristics. These parameters heavily affect mixture formation and the following combustion process, causing that the engine preoptimized to one fuel option can provide deteriorated performance and excess emissions if another sustainable option is applied. To investigate the scale of this problem, injection pressure sweeps were performed around the stock, low NOx and low PM engine calibration utilizing split fuel injection. The results showed that FAME and HVO prefer lower injection pressures than diesel fuel, with the benefits of simultaneous reduction of all emission indicators compared to DF. Additionally, reduction of injection pressure from 80 MPa to 60 MPa for biodiesels at low engine load resulted in improved brake thermal efficiency by 1 percentage point, due to reduced parasitic losses in the common rail system.

The article presents results of investigation on the combustion of a mixture of pyrolysis oil from tires and regular fuel in the internal combustion reciprocating piston engine. The tested fuel consisted of: diesel fuel and pyrolysis oil at amount of 10% by volume. The tests were carried out on a single-cylinder naturally aspirated compression-ignition engine. The engine was equipped with a common rail fuel injection system and an electronic control unit that allowed changing injection timing. A comparative analysis of pressure-volume charts for the reference fuel, which was diese fuel, and for a mixture of diesel with 10% addition of pyrolysis oil was carried out. Injector characteristics for the reference fuel and the mixture were determined. Engine efficiency for both fuels was also determined. Unrepeatability of the engine work cycles for the diesel fuel and the tested mixture was calculated. Finally, exhaust toxic emission was analyzed. It was found that the pyrolysis oil can be used as valuable additive to regular diesel fuel at amount up to 10%, however, toxic exhaust gases emission was increased.

Many factors, such as climate change and the associated risk of increasing the average temperature on the globe, energy security and the finishing of fossil fuel deposits have caused other renewable energy sources to be sought. Transport, as a branch of industry largely responsible for air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in large cities, requires the necessary changes in the way vehicles are powered. Until now, the fuels available at petrol stations use admixtures of first generation biofuels, such as bioethanol, as a 5% additive to motor gasolines and biodiesel (FAME) as a 7% additive to diesel oil. The article presents the idea of biorefinery installations, specifies the spectrum of substrates of the second and advanced generations, which may be a biorefinery input, including waste oils that can be used to produce hydrogenated HVO vegetable oils and other high-value products. The paper presents he existing biorefinery plant in Venice resulting from the transformation of a conventional oil refinery in which HVO fuel is produced. The article also presents the parameters of this new biofuel and compared them with the parameters of other fuels used to power self-ignition engines, such as FAME and diesel, along with discussing the prospects for HVO fuel development in Europe.

Opis:
For diesel oils containing fatty acid methyl esters (FAME), an important problem is their susceptibility to oxidation processes as this shortens the maximum storage time of such fuels and may result in deterioration of oil properties and thus affect the engine operation. One of the fuel ageing processes is the formation and release of resins from the fuel. The physical stability of mixtures may be evaluated by means of a physical stability index, determined with using a Turbiscan analyser [3, 19, 20]. The authors attempted to explore the possibility of using this index for evaluating the changes that take place during the ageing of diesel oil. Additionally, the impact of the presence of selected metals on the fuel ageing process was examined. Within the research, diesel oil samples containing various metals were prepared and subjected to the ageing process. Spectrophotometric tests were also carried out with using a Turbiscan instrument [4, 10, 11]. The samples were subjected to oxidation stability tests before and after the ageing process. The physical stability index and, additionally, the oxidation stability of the samples were examined by accelerated ageing methods.

Opis:
Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is considered as a realistic substation of marine fuel in 21 century. Solution of building new engines or converting diesels into gas fueled propulsion meets the stringent international emission regulations. For HFO (heavy fuel oil) or MDO (marine diesel oil) propelled vessels, operation of bunkering is relatively wide known and simple. Its due to the fact that fuel itself doesn’t require high standards of handling. Where for LNG as a fuel its very demanding process – it evaporates and requires either consuming by bunker vessel or reliquefication. Distribution of such bunker is becoming multidimensional problem with time and space constrains. The objective of the article is to review the methods of optimization using genetic algorithms for a model of LNG distribution. In particular, there will be considered methods of solving problems with many boundry criteria whose objective functions are contradictory. Methods used for solving the majority of problems are can prevent the simultaneous optimization of the examined objectives, e.g. the minimisation of costs or distance covered, or the maximisation of profits or efficiency etc. Here the standard genetic algorithms are suitable for solving multi-criteria problems by using functions producing a diversity of results depending on the adopted approach.

The aim of the study was to determine the effect of soil contamination with diesel oil on the early development of three species of the Fabaceae family (Medicago lupulina L., Lotus corniculatus L., Trifolium repens L.). These species have a wide ecological range and they often occur on extensively used lawns. For these reasons, the knowledge on their tolerance to soil pollution with diesel oil can be of great importance in the creative and conservative cultivation of these plant species and their seed production for establishing the greenery of communication routes. The studies were carried out under controlled laboratory conditions. The soil substrates were composed of the loamy sand mixed with diesel oil in an amount of 2.5 g and 5.0 g per 1 kg of absolute dry mass of soil. The germination dynamics were analyzed. The measurements were conducted twice a day for 12 days after sowing. The development of seedlings was determined on the basis of the length, diameter, area and volume of the radicle. These features were determined on 20-day-old seedlings of the tested species. For the analysis of plant material, the technique of the scanned image was used in the “WinRhizo PRO 2009” software. It was proven that the tested species have various tolerances for the petrol oil in the soil and demonstrate various defense mechanisms under the stress conditions. The least changes of the seed germination rate on the soil with diesel oil against the control were indicated for L. corniculatus. The defense strategy of that species relied on the radicle development through increasing the diameter and – in consequence – the surface and the volume. M. lupulina also showed good germination capacity in the presence of diesel oil, but the radicle was shorter in comparison to the control. The germination rate of T. repens in the contaminated soil was significantly reduced. The recommendation for using not only L. corniculatus, but also M. lupulina on the contaminated areas should be taken into consideration.

The paper presents an analysis of the constructions of oil pumps for an aircraft compression ignition engine. It is a two-stroke liquid-cooled engine with a power of 100 kW. The system has 3 cylinders and 6 opposed pistons. The paper estimates the required oil pump capacity to make the engine components well-lubricated. Next, automotive oil pumps for diesel engines are analyzed to select a correct pump for aircraft diesel engine applications. Three pump constructions of different constructions and dimensions of a rotor were select-ed. A measurement bench was designed and built to test these oil pumps in the range of pump shaft speeds from 0 to 4500 rpm and volumetric flow rate up to 150 l/min. The bench also enables stabilization of oil temperature at the required level within the range from 30 to 120oC. In addition, flow resistance through engine slide bearings was simulated by changing the position of a throttling valve at the pump output to regulate pressure in the range of 0-700 kPa. The obtained capacity characteristics of individual pumps versus on oil pressure and temperature allowed us to find an appropriate oil pump to make individual engine nodes well-lubricated.

Reaching of high parameters of a drive unit and low pollution of the natural environment is considered to be the most desired effect of motorization. The use of the additive in the form of fatty acid methyl esters to the diesel oil, assumes lowering of harmful fuel gases’ emission and reaching high operating parameters of an engine, such as power and turning moment. Studies on the power output and the turning moment of an engine with self-ignition are presented in the study. The subject matter of the studies was a combustion engine with self-ignition of the power of 80 kW with the direct common rail system and turbo-compressor’s supercharging and with electromagnetic injectors. The tested engine was powered with diesel oil and the mixture of fatty acid methyl esters and the diesel fuel, in proportions 10%, 30% and 50% with an improver, at the standard settings of the fuel injection controllers. The vehicle used for the testing purposes, has been singled out with respect to the specific features, such as: universality of its use as a means of transportation and the opportunity of modification of the injection parameters, resistance to possible unfavourable consequences resulting from the use of the fuel mixture. The studies were conducted on a chassis test house, at full engine’s loading. The vehicle placed on the test house’s rollers, was strapped with belts to the foundation, and then accelerated up to the specific speed and subjected to loading standing in place. In such a manner, the road conditions were simulated. The obtained results of the tests were subject to the statistical analysis. From their analysis it results, that application of the mixture lowers the engine’s parameters to a degree unnoticeable at the time of its operation.

Opis:
The aim of the article was to analyze changes in the trends of selected physical, chemical and functional properties of lubricating engine oil operating in a diesel-engine vehicle equipped with DPF. The vehicle was operated mainly in urban driving conditions (app. 70%), which impeded the DPF regeneration cycle and caused dilution of oil with unburned fuel. Changes in the following physical and chemical properties were assessed: the DF level in engine oil, viscosity (kinematic, dynamic HTHS and structural CCS), total base number, acid number as well as the degree of oxidation, nitration and sulphonation. The tests have shown that the amount of unburned fuel that goes to the engine crankcase due to the unfinished DPF regeneration cycle is as high as 26.0-34.6%. Dilution of the lubricating oil with fuel leads to a significant reduction of its viscosity - about 30% of the fuel content causes a decrease in the kinematic viscosity measured at 100°C to the level of 7.7 mm2/s. There was also a significant decrease in total base number (TBN) < 2 mg KOH/g, and an increase in the total acid number (TAN). Moreover, the results obtained were analyzed for potential effects that could have been caused during prolonged engine operation by assessing the content of trace elements in the samples taken.
