Opis:
We provide a model of a stationary laminar flow in a channel at the bottom of which plants grow in a dense layer. Since this layer of plants is dense, we treat it as a porous medium and we propose to describe the flow in such a medium by Brinkman’s equation. The flow in the fluid layer located above (infiltrated by water) the layers of plants is described by the Stokes equation. We show that such a model gives results consistent with experimental observations. We indicate also that this new model complements the previously given model in which the benthonic plants were considered as a suspension, so the previous model referred to the channel at the bottom of which the plants grew rare. For high permeability of the porous medium, we arrive at the results obtained for the medium filled with a liquid with a suspension.

Opis:
The current research is focused on the creeping motion of fluid past a permeable spheroidal particle that has an impermeable core under the magnetic forces. Motion in the permeable zone is proposed to be regulated by Darcy’s law. At the fluid-porous interface, the continuity of the normal velocity component is assumed together with the balance of pressure with normal stresses and the Beavers–Joseph–Saffman–Jones (BJSJ) slip boundary condition. Vanishing of the normal component of velocity is used at the surface of the impermeable core. The drag on the spheroidal particle is obtained in an analytical form. The reliability of the drag coefficient on significant physical parameters such as permeability, non-sphericity parameter, Hartmann numbers, separation parameter (the measure of closeness between the porous particle and the core), and slip parameters is examined. Comparisons of results are made with the cases having no magnetic effect and show that the applied magnetic field possesses the ability to reduce the rate of flow of fluid. Well-known previously published results are deduced from the current analysis.

Opis:
The perspective of the current analysis is to represent the incompressible viscous flow past a low permeable spheroid contained in a fictitious spheroidal cell. Stokes approximation and Darcy’s equation are adopted to govern the flow in the fluid and permeable zone, respectively. Happel’s and Kuwabara’s cell models are employed as the boundary conditions at the cell surface. At the fluid porous interface, we suppose the conditions of conservation of mass, balancing of pressure component at the permeable area with the normal stresses in the liquid area, and the slip condition, known as Beavers-Joseph-Saffman-Jones condition to be well suitable. A closed-form analytical expression for hydrodynamic drag on the bounded spheroidal particle is determined and therefore, mobility of the particle is also calculated, for both the case of a prolate as well as an oblate spheroid. Several graphs and tables are plotted to observe the dependence of normalized mobility on pertinent parameters including permeability, deformation, the volume fraction of the particle, slip parameter, and the aspect ratio. Significant results that influence the impact of the above parameters in the problem have been pointed out. Our work is validated by referring to previous results available in literature as reduction cases.

Opis:
Laminar natural convection in a trapezoidal porous vertical cavity has been investigated in this work. It is assumed that the porous enclosure is filled up with a permeable material subject to hydrodynamic and thermal anisotropy, the flow being governed by the Darcy law as applicable to a non-isotropic medium. It is further assumed that (i) there is heating at the left vertical wall and cooling at the right wall of the enclosure and (ii) the flow domain is subject to the presence of heat source or heat sink. The partial differential equations governing the resulting free convection have been solved numerically in the non-dimensional forms. There arises a number of parameters relating to buoyancy, internal heating, cavity aspect ratio and inclination of the upper surface to the horizontal. The influence of these parameters has been illustrated and analyzed through contours of streamlines and isotherms. We have also discussed the role of internal heating as well as anisotropy on the heat transfer characteristics.

Opis:
The present work aims at studying the effects of orientation, size, position, and the combination of multiple internal diathermal obstructions in a fluid-saturated square porous enclosure, generally encountered in thermal insulations. The overall objective is to suppress the natural convection fluid flow and heat transfer across a differentially heated porous enclosure. To serve this purpose, multiple diathermal obstructions are employed to mechanically protrude into a porous medium. It is sought to estimate the effect of various types of orientation, clustering and alternate positioning of obstructions by considering number of obstructions (Np), length of obstructions (λ), modified Rayleigh number (Ra*) on local and average Nusselt number (Nu). The Darcy model for porous media is solved using Finite difference method along with Successive Accelerated Replacement scheme. One of the findings is that the value of the Nusselt number decreases by increasing both, the number of obstructions as well as the length of obstructions irrespective of its orientation and positioning. The reduction in Nusselt number is significant with obstructions attached on lower half of the hot wall and/or on upper half of cold wall. In addition, the overall reduction in Nusselt number is slightly greater with obstructions attached explicitly to the cold wall.

Opis:
Brinkman’s law is describing the seepage of viscous fluid through a porous medium and is more acurate than the classical Darcy’s law. Namely, Brinkman’s law permits to conform the flow through a porous medium to the free Stokes’ flow. However, Brinkman’s law, similarly as Schro¨dinger’s equation was only devined. Fluid in its motion through a porous solid is interacting at every point with the walls of pores, but the interactions of the fluid particles inside pores are different than the interactions at the walls, and are described by Stokes’ equation. Here, we arrive at Brinkman’s law from Stokes’ flow equation making use of successive iterations, in type of Born’s approximation method, and using Darcy’s law as a zero-th approximation.

The aim of this study is to derive flow parameters, which are permeability and Forchheimer coefficient, based on experimentally measured flow rates and pressure drops. When flow rates used in measurements exceed the limits of linear Darcy’s flow regime we discuss what needs to be taken into account while processing the measurements. The study consists of two parts. In this part we briefly recall Darcy’s and Forchheimer’s laws and address the issue of detecting transition between ranges of their applicability. Then we describe the experiment and discuss 8 different ways to process measurement data, four for Darcy’s, and four for Forchheimer’s models. The main topic of the second part is to provide recommendations for the best ways to process data, so that the results obtained with numerical models are in the best agreement with the experimental data. The results shown in the two papers belong to a larger work devoted to modeling fluid flows through porous media, with a special interest in granular beds.

Opis:
Our study is based on a column experiment of water flow through a porous granular bed. In Part 1 we propose eight methods to derive parameters of flow models based on measurement data. These parameters are permeability and Forchheimer coefficient for Darcy’s and Forchheimer’s laws. The approach presented in this part uses two numerical models to perform simulations of flow. One model is based on the Finite Element Method implemented in the authors’ code. The second model, which is ANSYS/Fluent package, uses the Finite Volume Method. Results of numerical computations are compared with experimental data that allows determination of the best method of parameter evaluation (in which the error was less than 3% over the whole range of filtration velocities). The problem of identification of ranges of applicability of the Darcy’s and Forchheimer’s laws is also addressed. In the conclusions, a set of guidelines is given, which should facilitate planning a similar experiment and its computational processing.

In the "new age" oil and gas industry came more and more into focus term of unconventional hydrocarbons. Gained experience and success in the United States tight gas sand reservoirs Piceance, Anadarko, Greater Green, Lobo fields confirmed the hidden potential of unconventional hydrocarbon resources. In some production and development areas called coal bed seam, shale gas and tight sand reservoirs without intensifying operations isn't possible to produce commercial gas volumes. Used practises and gained large experiences in the crude oil fields are commonly used in the shale and tight gas fields across the United States. Application of these technologies of stimulation methods like fracturing in Europe is at the very beginning. Pioneer investors are waiting in all Europe for the well testing results from the first dozen fractured shale gas and tight sand reservoirs. Test results could have significant influence on the future planned massive drilling campaign of exploration of the unconventional hydrocarbon resources

Opis:
In this work the numerical study of the hydrodynamic efficiency of the multistage filters setting technology is carried out on the basis of mathematical simulation. Obtained results of a flow of solution in porous media near a wellbore qualitatively conform to the experimental data. In calculations the well is considered as the high-permeability channel with the fictitious permeability coefficient depending on a filter construction (porosity, form of perforations). The results of calculation show that the fictitious permeability coefficient has deep influence on the fluid influx to the well and the distribution of flow rate on well height is not uniform. The developed model is used for the axisymmetric case. Calculations were carried out for a single well; however it can be easily applied to solve the 3D problem with various sets of wells.
